Pools have health needs too BY HANA AL AN IS
Children and families around the valley have been asked to reduce outside contact by taking shelter at home. With gyms & public facilities closed, backyard pools provide an ideal escape for families to focus on their health and well-being during quarantine. Even during this time, pools need to be maintained properly, preferably by a pool service professional. Proper sanitization, which includes regular circulation and water treatment, prevents the transmission of infectious diseases and helps maintain community health. Without it, various pathogens can grow, such as Pseudomonas, Cryptosporidium, E. Coli, Shigella, etc. Water that is not treated can also act as a breeding ground for mosquitoes or other pests, and the diseases they may carry. So what are your options? This is where Jake Odom and his team of pool professionals at Valleywide Pool Supply come in. Locally owned and a Moon Valley native, Jake knew he had to open his pool retail shop and pool maintenance company in the neighborhood he grew up in. With plenty of homes featuring great swimming pools, it just makes sense for Valleywide Pool Supply to set up shop at 7th St and Coral Gables. Pool service companies have been named an essential service, but if something has
happened to your pool maintenance routine since the beginning of the pandemic, you can turn to Jake’s team to maintain your pool. If you are especially vulnerable during this time, you might have suspended service to limit visitors. It’s important to know though that you should not swim in your pool if it is not being maintained. Again, you could get sick from water borne illnesses if you pH levels are off, and green pools become an even bigger headache and costly expense later. Wanting to get service going again? Jake’s team is ready to help. If you are attempting to treat the pool yourself, remember that Valleywide Pool Supply is making accommodations. Their store is consistenly cleaned and low contact, but if you are considered about making a trip in public, Jake has no problem preparing your order, taking payment over the phone, and then delivering straight to your home. If you are treating your own pool, do your research & purchase the necessary chemicals. With his background in pool treatment and chemisty, Jake is a great resource to ask such questions. Be sure to read the entire label and follow all manufacturer instructions when applying and storing chemicals. Additionally, wear gloves and goggles, and store chemicals and material in a safe, secure place. Many pool chemicals can also be used for surface disinfection, drinking water treatment, and more, so be sure to ask! Check out our full business spotlight on Jake Odom & Valleywide Pool Supply in our next issue of Moon Valley Tattler.
Seven Days Cruising the Caribbean by Shannon E. Perry
My husband, Bill, and I joined his sister, Kathy and her husband, Dan, for a week cruising in the Caribbean in early January. We flew to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and arrived in the morning after a night flight. Sunday, January 6, was the Feast of the Epiphany (coming of the Magi) and Kathy and I attended Mass in the Cathedral. We were delighted to see the three kings. They were dressed in very colorful robes with jewels and wore turbans. They processed up the center aisle carrying gifts (of gold, frankincense and myrrh?). A wonderful way to celebrate the Epiphany which I had never experienced before. Over the next five days we visited the islands of St. Thomas, St. Maarten, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, and Barbados. In 2017, I had spent two weeks as a volunteer on St. Lucia working with elementary school children. After contacting the director of the program and arranging to meet with her, I took a long taxi ride to Anse La Raye, a small village where she works. We had a wonderful talk and I had an update on the volunteer program. On St. Maarten we went to a very crowded beach where planes flew very low and landed just over a fence while people watched to see if the plane would clear the fence. The planes came in frequently, so it was quite exciting. The beach was too crowded for us to get near the water so on this whole trip, we didn’t even stick a toe into the water! When we were at sea, we did a little gambling. One evening we played Bingo and Bill won $75. Kathy won a music trivia contest and was awarded a “Ship on a Stick” but no money. On the last day Kathy and Bill entered a slot tournament and Bill won $500. He was quite excited to win. We had a wonderful few days cruising and spending time with Kathy and Dan.

Rookie Mom: Lessons Today From My Grandmother’s Personal History Through Pandemics My Grandma Dorothy is the third of four children. When she was only three years old, her mother, Evangeline Mooney, passed away in 1918 from the second wave of the Spanish flu which had killed more than 50 million people -- more people than in World War I. My strong Irish Grandma Dorothy went on to marry my very good and very humble grandfather where together they raised six children -- five sons and their only daughter, my mother Marie. When the polio epidemic hit its pinnacle of deaths in 1952, my Uncle John was afflicted with the disease leaving him disabled and unable to walk. My grandmother was a school nurse during this time, so she and my grandfather, who was a CFO in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, worked tirelessly to raise their big brood during these difficult times. They were not a rich family, but worked hard and worked often. One day, a well-intentioned woman was collecting funds for children with Polio around the neighborhood. Arriving at my grandmother’s door, my Grandma Dorothy poured every penny out of her purse that she had to support the fight against polio. The neighbor then said, “You know, there’s a poor child in this very neighborhood who has polio and doesn’t seem to be doing very well. I cannot imagine what his mother must be going through.” My grandmother didn’t say a thing or admit it was her son and that she was the mother, but rather let it go. I remember her telling me that story and it always stuck… How much emotion my grandmother was holding onto and just probably wanted to explode -- her frustration, pain, hopelessness, but how she had to remain strong -- from what shaped her as a young woman in being raised without a mother and now (or then I should say) as a mother trying to keep it together with an uncertain future for her son. First, you should know that the polio vaccine was discovered in 1955 and my Uncle John recovered successfully… and then some. Because of his temporary disability, he fought stronger than most kids and actually became a decorated soldier in Vietnam, moved to Anchorage, Alaska where he became a true mountain man adventurer -- pilot of his own plane, captain of his own boat, and all-around family man and good guy. At any rate, can you imagine everything my grandmother went through just with these pandemics? It’s amazing to me the personal effect it had on her and the incredible fortitude of her spirit which shaped her through these historical events. I see this fortitude shaping so many people today, and it sincerely humbles me in how

it’s shaping me, my students, and my community. Yes, this column is, more or less, an advice/op-ed column about motherhood. I haven’t seen my mother in over a month because she falls in the Coronavirus age range. I have been with my only child and 3-year-old daughter Brynn all day since taking her out of preschool over a month ago. I am not only adapting to teaching online, but my husband is working nonstop, too, and we’re trying to make the best out of a scary situation. If anything, lessons from how my grandmother lost her mother to the Spanish flu and had a son catch polio, I’d say fortitude and humbleness is what I can learn from her through this. My grandmother didn’t complain to that woman who asked for money, even if she gave it all away to help pay my uncle’s medical bills. She never victimized about not growing up with a mother. She gave the word strength a capital S during these times. I hope that my grandmother’s lessons give you the fortitude to hold on through this quarantine no matter how long it lasts, no matter how many waves the virus goes through, no matter how it impacts your family -- personally or emotionally. Right now, I am holding on to my grandmother’s humbleness, resilience, and capital S Strength. This is just one of the lessons I am taking from the many chapters of her history as we stay united behind our doors to keep our community safe. TRAPPED IN MOON VALLEY
LET TER FROM THE EDITOR
What did you do during COVID 19? I know I must say, we are all probably pretty tired of seeing, hearing, and living in this unpredictable time, but hearing all the wonderful outcomes during this pandemic seems to help ease the pains, anxiousness, and mostly uncertainty for many. I personally have worked most every day, caring for individuals with disabilities and publishing a newspaper both fall under “essential businesses.” Days have been very long and one thing that is certain each day has been “change” one day this, one day that. Being flexible and ready to change course when needed has been one of the best characteristics I have. (ha… ADHD, sometimes helps in that area!!) Most of my family also work in the “essential field” of something and have been blessed with the continuation of work and steady paychecks. So, I decided to do something to help out and ease the pain of cooking every meal, 3 times a day, 7 days a week. Hence the newly created: “Aunt Dawn’s Sunday take-away”. Every Sunday morning, I would start my home-style cooking, whip up a meal for 4 (meaning they would have at least 2 dinners) all packaged up nicely with sometimes a little coloring book, game or just a little love note. I had really wanted them to come and sit awhile but I so appreciated the “social distancing” so a curbside pickup and a quick blown kiss is what I get each week. I hope to continue this little love gesture, it has been a great way to connect, as well as bone up on my cooking skills.

Tips to Help Make Walking One of Your Healthy Habits BY DR . ANNE DOCIMO & DIANA NYAD With an increased focus on practicing healthy habits – such as washing hands frequently and staying home when sick to help avoid spreading COVID-19 – it’s important to remain mindful about the importance of daily walking.
In fact, a report from Harvard Medical School concluded that walking can help boost the immune system, ease joint pain and curb cravings for high-sugar foods, which may contribute to inflammation and disease.1 Plus, studies have shown walking more and sitting less may help people maintain a healthier weight. Here are three tips people in Arizona can consider to help make walking part of your daily routine during April and year-round: Stay Active at Home: Even if you are spending more time at home, it is crucial to still stay active and not fall into the trap of only binging the latest TV series or movie. Remember to take short walks frequently throughout the
day, aiming for six separate “mini-walks” of at least 300 to 500 steps. To enhance cardiovascular fitness, aim for at least one “brisk walk” of at least 2,000 to 3,000 steps within 30 minutes each day. Start Small and Dream Big: If those targets seem daunting, remember it helps to start slowly and build up over time. And don’t discount walking compared to running: Maintaining a quick walking pace has been shown to be on par with running when it comes to lowering the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. If you are in good health and want to push yourself, think about someday planning a trip (once the global pandemic ends) to explore one of our nation’s top “bucket list” hikes, such as the Kalalau Trail in Hawaii or the Grand Canyon “Rim to Rim.” While it might seem mundane to only walk around your home or immediate neighborhood for the time being, studies show that setting – and writing down – long-term goals may help promote a healthier lifestyle. Identify “Intrinsic” and “Extrinsic” Motivators: In general, people are motivated by a combination of “intrinsic” factors, such as wanting to maintain a healthy weight, and extrinsic ones, such as financial rewards. Walking likely offers several intrinsic motivators given research has shown consistent movement may help ward off depression and prevent issues like heart disease. If you need external motivation, check with your employer about incentive-based wellness programs, including ones that provide financial rewards for meeting certain daily walking goals.
electric bikes BY LEON, TRY ME BIC YCLE Seems like cheating to have an electric bike. But they have worth: you have to pedal to make the motor drive. There are 4 to 5 settings making it easier to pedal when needed. The electric bike is a good thing, and you see more and more of them on the bike paths. Set the control to the lowest setting for the start increasing as needed. E-bikes are here to stay. They are getting lighter an less expensive. They also go more distance on a charge: 30 to 60 miles. Ride safe, stay to the right, wear a helmet and a blinky light in the day time is a good thing. There are more riders now of all ages with varying skills.

All Eyes On deck
BY BOB HUBBARD, OWNER OF HUBBARD FAMILY SWIM SCHOOL
Now that Arizona’s kids are required to remain at home for the rest of the school year, it’s time for all parents, grandparents, and guardians to be reminded of crucial water safety tips to keep children safer around backyard swimming pools. The Safer 3’s -Safer Water: Lock your gates and secure your pools -Safer Kids: Keep working on their learn-to-swim skills -Safer Response: Always have a designated “Water Watcher” and phone on your pool deck and Learn CPR AROUND THE POOL: Children should learn to never enter a pool until an adult has given them the OK. This goes for all children regardless of their age or ability. -At home, we suggest teaching your children to never enter the pool without asking first. Go out to the pool area and take your time setting up the towels, rearranging chairs, applying sunscreen, and enjoying the view. In other words, stall a bit to practice patience. -Teach your child to play and wait until you are finished getting ready before they enter the pool. ASSIGN A ‘WATER WATCHER’: When everyone is watching, no one is watching. Pick an adult to be your “Water Watcher.” Rotate among all eligible adults on the pool deck. Hang your Water Watcher tag on your pool gate key. Whenever you unlock your pool gate you give the Water Watcher tag to someone. ENTERING THE POOL: Years ago, our 4-year-old daughter, Katie, was jumping, swimming and having a great time. We were much younger parents then, with a higher energy level, and allowed our kids to get wild and crazy! Katie jumped off the wall, turned in the air, and tried to grab the side. In the process, she knocked her top two baby teeth. We spent all day looking for those teeth, but the dentist found them for us. Katie had knocked them right back up into her gums, on top of her two permanent teeth waiting to grow in. ALWAYS COUNT: When you are in the water and inviting your child into the water, count “1, 2, 3.” They learn not to come in the water uninvited. They also learn not to just jump in the pool when you are not ready. We hear stories of children just jumping in the pool, when their parents are on the other side and have to scramble to help them. -“Jump in and then turn around and go back to the wall.” It is a two-step process. Jump out, turn around, and swim back to the wall. -Jump in feet first or fall forward and land on your tummy. Belly flops are awesome! -Toes on the edge. When a child runs and jumps, sooner or later they will take off too far from the water. Ouch! Their tailbones hurt when they hit the edge of the pool. -Teach your kids to always enter a new body of water feet first and then
Call us: 602.765.0902
teach belly flops. There’s no need to go deep when you enter a pool! We guarantee there will be 5 backyard pools that are all 4 feet deep, but somewhere they’ll dive into one that’s 3 feet and bonk their heads. Start good habits now! Hopefully, they’ll remember it when they’re 16 and jumping into Lake Powell with their friends. NEVER SWIM ALONE: Our fifth child, Patrick, idolized his older brother who was a collegiate gymnast. One afternoon we watched this little 5-year-old as he prepared to go swimming. He stood on the edge of the pool with his back to the water. Suddenly, with no warning, he attempted to enter the pool by throwing a backflip - just like his big brother. Patrick hit his head on the deck and slid into the pool - his excellent swimming ability was no help at that point. Patrick was a bit dazed but otherwise fine. Never swim alone. DO NOT USE ‘FLOATIES’: If you are boating on a lake - YES, use life jackets! If you are swimming in a pool, your children need constant supervision, NOT “floaties!” Never consider flotation devices a substitute for supervision. We have seen young children run and jump into a pool and then struggle and need help. They forgot that they took their “floaties” off and they did not know how to swim independently. Resist the temptation to have children jump off the wall to you When they jump in, let them go under the water and then bring them up. Teach children the consequence for stepping off a step or jumping off the wall. Teach them to turn back and grab a wall, swim back to the steps, or roll over and float. Those are their three choices to be safe. This takes time and patience. Teach Children to Learn How to Swim Well -Continue to teach your children or take them to formal swim lessons until they’re completely comfortable underwater. -Work on their confidence and strength. They should not be working hard when they are in the water. They should be able to relax and roll over and float. -Over 70% of the world’s surface is covered in water - be comfortable enough to explore it!

Sourdough in the time of Corona virus BY AUTUMN RUZSA, OWNER AT BOTTOM*S BAKERY Baking has always been my thing. I remember my first baking experiences as a little girl, the smell of the butter (or probably margarine as it was the 90’s) mixing with the brown sugar and egg and the magic of the raw dough turning into a warm delicious cookie after only a short time, spent with my face glued to the oven door watching it’s transformation. Since that first time as a five-yearold, I have had many more baking memories, a lot of total flops (should we turn the oven light on so it bakes faster?) and as the years went on, more and more successful baked goods. Bringing me up to 2020; the global pandemic, sweeping the world and taking away all of the commercial yeast?! Who would have thought that among the first things people hoard would be yeast? With all the newfound time at home and the fact that at retail warehouses, 25 pounds of flour costs $6.19; I can see how it would be advantageous to make bread rather than buying it. My only wish is that these hopefuls are able to use up all the flour and yeast before the flour goes rancid and the yeast completely dies. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I only had two baby packets of active dry yeast sitting in my pantry and a huge desire to bake. That caused the necessity to make my very own sourdough starter. I scoured the internet and decided to go with King Arthur’s Flour’s website’s article on starting a starter. It was pretty easy to follow; all you need is water and flour and time. Then I asked a fellow baker friend who had a lot of great insight on the starter and now I feel like I know what I’m doing. So much so that I’m upset at my past self for not having started cultivating wild yeast years ago! It is so versatile, the list of things I’ve made with it is numerous – brownies, chocolate chip cookies, English muffins, pizza dough, waffles, and most recently, flaky, buttery, delicious croissants. And the list for things I plan to bake is almost as long, provided I have enough flour. I encourage any reader with a flare for baking to commence their sourdough journey today. Read all you can find on the internet, there are so many bloggers with their sourdough stories. To begin: use a kitchen scale and add equal parts
water and flour. Let that sit loosely covered on the kitchen counter for 24 hours. The next morning, not much will have happened, but toss (or compost) half of the starter – weigh out what you have and add an equal amount of both flour and water and let it sit for 24 hours again. You might see some activity by the morning of day three, maybe some bubbles, maybe a sour smell, mine smelled unpleasant to me, but do not be discouraged by that, or not much has happened, regardless now is the time to start the feedings twice a day, every 12 hours, and this is where I recommend: don’t make too much, so you won’t have to throw so much away. Try some small formula like 20g starter, 20g flour, and 20g of water. That way for the feedings every 12 hours, you’re only discarding approx. 40 grams. I know, what kind of an American uses the metric system?! Most scales go between ounces and grams with the click of a button, its just my experience that grams are better for smaller amounts, I think there’s 28.35 grams in an ounce but 20 sounds like a much nicer number than 0.71. So, for a few days, do the feedings every 12 hours and you’ll notice the starter, your new pet friend that you created, being very active, doubling in size in a few hours’ time. To check if it’s ready to be used for bread, get a small glass of water and drop a small amount of your starter, if it floats, it’s ready! Once it is strong like that you can keep it in a jar in your fridge and feed it at most once a week or every two weeks. Since at first, there will be more discarding, you can use the discarded starter in recipes that don’t depend on the leavening from the wild yeast such as my afore mentioned chocolate chip cookies, brownies, or waffles. The possibilities are endless. Happy baking!

Pandemic Preparedness (Estate Planning)
I’m writing this in mid-April, and hoping by the time you read this, it’s in your local B Y L I B B Y B A N K S , P L L C , E S TAT E P L A N N I N G restaurant surrounded by friends! In the meantime, I’ve made a few notes to myself about being prepared, as I bet many of you have as well. I likely will never trust my memory again about whether I should buy toilet paper. (A week before the total depletion, with plenty on the shelves at Costco, I believed we were “just fine” on toilet paper and didn’t grab a package!) And who knew that I would consider disposable gloves and masks essential tools for my assistants so that we could be sure to get wills, trusts and powers of attorney in place for our clients. I continue to “meet” with new clients via Zoom, FaceTime, and phone to get those concerned started with estate planning. Preparing for a pandemic may mean putting a plan in place to assure you have your affairs in order and give you a little bit of peace of mind. Here are a few things to think about and get in order. 1. Have your estate planning done. If you have been procrastinating about your estate planning, you can start now, and if you are lucky enough to reschedule that missed spring break trip, you will already have your plan in place before you leave. 2. Review your existing estate plan while you are at home and plan to update if needed. A big mistake I see in estate planning is the “set it and forget it” syndrome. All of us need to review our estate plan from time to time, especially as our families evolve. Certainly, you should review your plan when things change for you or your spouse. But you should also review your plan if your children have gotten married, had babies or gotten a divorce. Check your plan to see if it still does what you want, and that no one is included that you don’t want to get your property. If one of your parents has died, you may need to upgrade your plan due to an inheritance. If the trustee or executor is no longer able to serve, or no longer capable, you need to change who will serve. I recommend a review with an attorney every three years. Once you’ve done your at-home review, we offer a free consultation to discuss your plan, changes in the law you may not know about, and how we can help. 3. Review titles and beneficiary designations. If you have a revocable living trust and have not changed titles to property and accounts to place them in the name of the trust, your plan is not complete, and your family may have to file probate. A call to your bank or looking over your current statements can tell you if you still have work to do. Also, this is a good time to check beneficiary
designations on your insurance and retirement plans to be sure you’ve named the right people. Once you’ve done so, you can rest assured your estate plan will work as you intended. 4. Review your plan for minor children. If you haven’t named a guardian who is able and willing to serve and something happens to you, the court will decide who will raise your kids without your input. If you have named a guardian, consider if this person is still the best choice. If your children are off to high school next year, the guardian you picked for them as infants might not be the right fit anymore. Also, be sure to name a back-up in case your first choice cannot serve. 5. Secure or review healthcare documents. Everyone over the age of 18 needs certain documents (this is an important reminder for those of us whose adult children are barely adults). They are: 1) Durable General Power of Attorney for Finances appointing someone to deal with financial issues, banking, and all your other legal or financial matters; 2) a Heath Care Power of Attorney, which gives another person legal authority to make health care decisions (including life and death decisions) for you if you are unable to make them for yourself; 3) HIPPA Authorizations, which gives written consent for doctors to discuss your medical situation with others, including family members; and 4) Advanced Directive or Living Will to let your loved ones know what you want (and don’t want) at the end of life. 6. Review your insurance. Check the amount of your life insurance coverage and see if it still meets your family’s needs. Consider getting long-term care insurance to help pay for the costs of long-term care (and preserve your assets for your family) in the event you and/or your spouse should need it due to illness or injury. 7. Organize your accounts and documents. It used to be that I could just point to my file cabinet and say everything was “in there.” But now so much is done online that many people don’t leave a paper trail. Make a list of ALL of your accounts, where they are located, and the user names and passwords, then review and update it from time to time. Print a hard copy in case your computer is stolen or crashes, put it in a safe place and let someone you trust know where to find it. Be sure to include on your master list any passwords that might be needed to access your computer and files. 8. Talk to your children or other beneficiaries about your plan. You don’t have to show them financial statements, but you can discuss in general terms what you are planning and why, especially when any changes are made. The more they understand your plan, the more likely they are to accept it—and that will help preserve family harmony after you are gone. And I have to add number 9: Take a breath and reach out to your friends and loved ones! We will get through this and most of us will come out the other end healthier and more appreciative of our neighbors and family. why wouldn’t you have a reverse mortgage? Seat belts, baby seats, pet leashes and Reverse Mortgages – what do they have in common? Answer: you only need them when you need them. I’m not advocating for getting rid of seat belts, baby seats, or pet leashes. They are prudent and they save lives. If we could predict the future with 100% certainty, we may not need to use these things all the time. But we cannot predict the future, therefore, having them in place can help forestall an unanticipated disaster. The same point can be made about having a Reverse Mortgage. I wrote about this last month, but now I’m specifically aiming at the comfortably heeled retiree, whose home is paid for and who has a nice portfolio of investments which provide a comfortable living. Zing, out of nowhere the market is in freefall. Their portfolio is worth 30% less than it was a month ago. They sure as heck don’t want to liquidate undervalued assets to live on. Maybe great buying opportunities present themselves, but liquidating deflated assets to take advantage of them doesn’t make sense. Saving $20,000 or $30,000 on a new car is a real bargain, but depleting cash reserves, is that too risky? A great stock is so darn cheap, but selling one security at cents on the dollar to buy something better, is that a good play? Having a fall back strategy is prudent. A Reverse Mortgage is a great fall back strategy. If you have ever had a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC), you know how handy it was. You have an established line of credit on which you can draw when needed. All

Arizona Humane Society COVID-19 Update In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Arizona Humane Society (AHS), like many
other organizations, has had to implement a great number of modifications, seemingly overnight, to continue its mission to save the most vulnerable animals and enrich the lives of pets and people. And although some operations have been temporarily suspended, AHS continues to provide resources for sick, injured and abused homeless pets and resources for pet owners while striving to safeguard the staff and those in our community. Committed to caring for the Valley’s most vulnerable pets, AHS’ Emergency Animal Medical Technicians™ and Cruelty Investigators continue to rescue pets each day while AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital™ has expanded to a 24/7 model to medically treat those homeless pets. Similar changes can also be witnessed in AHS’ modified drive-up foster service, this new curbside pick-up and drop-off system with text messaging permits for social distancing while still allowing pets to get continued care prior to adoption. Additionally, recently launched telemedicine follow-up appointments for foster pets further helps Foster Heroes to stay in the safety of their homes. While AHS’ adoption locations are currently closed, adoptions remain critical to AHS keeping its doors open for sick, injured and abused pets, therefore AHS has moved to a Virtual Adoption Matchmaker Program by appointment to place pets with their forever families. Interested adopters can view available pets at azhumane.org/adopt, schedule an appointment online and receive a telephone consultation from an adoptions matchmaker prior to visiting AHS in the hopes of making the best match for both adopter and pet. For those looking for training tips for their pets, AHS’ Pet Training Team offers virtual training sessions to address important issues such as unwanted behaviors, training tips and practices for enhanced communication between four and two-legged friends. Additionally, for those who may be needing extra resources to help their pets during these uncertain times, AHS’ Pet Resource Center, a team of professionals dedicated to helping pet owners keep pets in homes, continues to provide resources via LiveChat, phone or email. The team has recently added a bi-lingual social worker, or Resource Navigator, to also help those on the other end of the leash… the person. And for pet owners in need of urgent care medical help for their pets, AHS’ Margaret McAllister Brock Veterinary Clinic has extended its services to seven days a week for essential services. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that the community never fails to step up in times of need and for that we are so grateful. Hundreds of people have expressed interest in adopting and fostering pets at this critical time and AHS could not care for the nearly 18,000 homeless pets that we take in each year without the community’s support. If you’d like to learn more about our efforts at this time or how you can support homeless pets, please visit azhumane.org/COVID19.

Featured Pet - Man MORTUARIES, CEMETERY & CREMATORY
Looking for a new friend? Well, this Man (632291) is your guy! This sweet pup is a cute little Chihuahua weighing in at just a little over 12 pounds. This cute doggo was brought to the Arizona Humane Society by a Good Samaritan when he was found as a stray and is just one example of nearly 18,000 sick, injured and abused pets who were saved at AHS last year alone. And although his history is a bit of a mystery, Man walks great on a leash and loves the outdoors, making him the perfect adventure buddy for you. Since he is more on the quiet side, Man would do best in a quiet and calm home and would need to meet all new family members before being adopted. All AHS Adoption locations are temporarily closed, but AHS’ Virtual Adoption Matchmaking Program is available to place pets like Man with furever families! For more information, visit azhumane.org/adopt. Please note: This pet might have been adopted by the time you meet with our Virtual Adoption Matchmaker, however AHS has dozens more wonderful pets who also need loving homes. Please take a moment to meet some of the other dogs, cats and other companion animals at the shelter! Interested adopters can view available pets on our Adopt pages on our website, and schedule an appointment online to meet their next furry friend! To see all adoptable animals right now, visit www.azhumane. org/findapet.

“Mom, can we go out and play?” Those were words I would hear every day, often before school or breakfast each morning. It was almost a problem but manageable & exciting to witness. You see, our children were brand new to living on a cul-de-sac. Their world of exploration and freedom expanded tremendously with our move to the end of the Boca Raton Road. From the moment they woke up they would play and roam and be kids with their new-found freedom; something they never had where we lived before. It was a whole new world and beautiful to witness as their mother. I see a parallel to what I am witnessing in Moon Valley now. I have witnessed a freedom and an element of play during this Corona pandemic. You can’t help but marvel at neighbors you may have never met or seen before, siblings in back yards playing and enjoying our AZ living during this time of quarantine. My heart is just full watching families connect, bike, hike and Play! How fortunate we are to call Moon Valley HOME! Moon Valley has been my home for over 45 years. I love living and working here. Chiropractic is essential during Covid-19 BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER, DC With most of the nation still under virtual lockdown due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, people are suffering – and not just economically. Even healthy people who have not contracted the virus (or may have contracted it, but never showed symptoms) are suffering from limited access to health care, including chiropractic. But don’t let circumstance stop you from connecting with your chiropractor in one way or another during these uncertain times; here’s why. Chiropractic is essential during the COVID-19 pandemic; in fact, the Department of Homeland Security recently included chiropractors on its “Essential Critical Infrastructure Workforce” list, along with numerous other health care providers and a host of other essential businesses / services. With that said, call your chiropractor and verify whether they’re currently available for in-office appointments; and if not, whether they have, or plan to have, telemedicine services available soon – and not just for pandemics! Slowly but surely, the media is shifting its messaging away from doom and gloom and toward potential solutions. One message getting increasing airplay, and for good reason, is the benefit of a robust immune system in not only warding off viruses but fighting them if you’ve become infected. You might not have realized it until now, but chiropractors were touting the benefits of a strong immune system long before COVID-19. A healthy diet, exercise, appropriate supplementation (especially vitamins C and D), proper sleep, and stress reduction – all elements of comprehensive wellness care – have been shown to strengthen the immune system.
In fact, reports from Wuhan, China, suggest doctors have been successfully using high-dose vitamin C to fight COVID; while here in the states, former CDC director Dr. Tom Frieden publicly endorsed vitamin D as an immune booster that could potentially impact who suffers mild symptoms and who suffers complications. And don›t forget that chiropractic adjustments to relieve your pain and improve function will certainly benefit sleep and stress, thus benefiting your overall immune system. Back and neck pain are likely at an all-time high during COVID-19. Why? Stress, increased remote work (which may mean utilizing a makeshift workspace that isn’t posture friendly) and perhaps most of all, just sitting around more at home. If you’re suffering and your chiropractor is accepting patients right now, make an appointment; as a health care provider, they should have strict guidelines in place to ensure all CDC protocols regarding coronavirus protection are followed. If they’re not currently open, call and inquire about telemedicine services. Sometimes a quick discussion with your chiropractor can put your mind at ease and give you a roadmap for short-term relief until you can see them in the office. From your very first appointment, you will probably appreciate the essential nature of chiropractic wellness care. In the coming weeks, months and years, millions more will join you. That’s because chiropractic is essential to longterm health and wellness – and not just during COVID-19.
Pandemic Madness by Roseanne Katie sat at the table twiddling thumbs. The Governor’s stay-at-home order was making her nuts! Virtual communication did not ease the loneliness. Randomly, her eyes searched the kitchen for busy work. When they rested on her Grandmother’s dented fish mold, lovingly hung above the stove, her mood brightened. Retracing remembered, shared steps, she found a box of Knox Gelatin, canned salmon and pimento stuffed olives. Pulling green pepper, onion, celery, cucumber and mayo from the fridge, Katie went to work. Later, masterpiece before her, thoughts of Granny chased away the isolation. Smiling, she ate the olive eyes first.

Sad faces of those who cannot find toilet paper. That is what I will remember for a long time. Shopping is harder than I ever remember, even during the Second World War. Limited sugar. Now sometimes NO sugar. And no flour. What are we bracing against? What are people envisioning? Yet, sidewalk art and neighborliness abound. It is sweet and gives me hope. Citrus trees were full of blossoms and bees and humming birds and a few butterflies. I have learned to love zoom. And count on it. Our grandchildren sent amazing Easter cards. So sweet. So loving. For men, this time must be very different than for women. Our shopping genes are totally thwarted...joke. For men, it must be so confusing because the enemy is unseen. They, too want to protect their families. Going to Higher Power is a good answer. And there is time to be with friends. Not in person, but in spirit and time. Peace with each other. Appreciation for who each other have become. I know of two men with Alzheimer’s in homes who cannot see their wives except through glass or on Facetime. Their wives cannot hold them and direct them, helping staff. And one of the women in another unit in another building receiving only ice cream, protein bars, and potato chips, all day for food. She is not allowed out of her unit without permission, even to walk the hallways. But, Covid was found among the staff. And we think we have it hard in our homes! Neighbors walk joyfully under these amazingly blue skies with white cloudlets drifting by. I haven’t seen blue skies like this the whole 16 years we have been here! Thank goodness for the first responders. And healthcare workers. Who are they? Where do they find the strength to carry on? We lost a true hero recently in a nearby precinct. And two dear women, Dowhan and Hubert, were hurt. Love and thanks to them and their families. It takes a huge amount of courage to do what they do. Yet, the officers I know and trust are totally dedicated to protecting you and me. Weeds grow in our yard next to superweeds. Pull one and three come up. I admire the vigor of each one. One poppy plant is gaily waving its flowers in the breeze. Weeds often have yellow or purple or blue flowers. Our jojoba bush is amazing...9 feet tall! There are pretty red flowers on the pomegranate trees. It is celebrating spring with us. Bird voices give me hope for more regular days. I give thanks that we have lived where we can shop for so many items in so many stores. Friends and I are praying that businesses survive and we can go forward to the new normal, a thoughtful, thankful, loving community that we continue to build in Moon Valley and Phoenix. Thanks to everyone staying home and getting us through this phase of 2020. And thanks to the Tattler staff for “BEING THERE” to help us connect.

Excellence continues at GUHSD BY C I A R A E S C A L A N T E Glendale Union High School District has been supporting and engaging all students and families remotely due to the extended school closures. To accomplish this task, computers were provided to all students who did not have a device at home. Most recently, GUHSD teachers began teaching remotely and have been doing a remarkable job at providing online instruction and support. Teachers have also been finding and developing new innovative ways to engage their students and families which emphasizes that #ExcellenceContinues at GUHSD. To check out some of these creative strategies, visit our social media pages including Facebook and Twitter. In addition, GUHSD has provided several parent and student resources that can be found on the GUHSD website. Grab-and-Go Meal Service GUHSD is concerned not only with student and staff safety but wants to ensure our students remain well fed during our period of school closures. USDA guidelines allow us to serve meals during “unscheduled” closings to those 18 and younger. Therefore, our Grab-and-Go Meal Service is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at each GUHSD school including Apollo, Cortez, Glendale, Greenway, Independence, Moon Valley, Sunnyslope, Thunderbird and Washington. Breakfast and lunch meals are provided at the same time. Teens and children must be present to receive their meals. No paperwork is required to participate.

Within just a few months, National Charity League, Inc. Moon Valley Chapter (NCL), has faced the daunting task of adjusting to a “new normal” to keep our members and the community safe during this time. This has included switching to virtual board and member meetings and postponing some of the chapter’s larger annual events. However, our goals and commitment to the community remain the same. Our chapter and our members have stepped forward to spread kindness throughout our community at a time when it is needed the most. Here is a glimpse of some of the cool things we have been witness to over the past few months. We hope it will spark joy and encourage you to find unique ways to spread kindness in your homes. Payton Farley from the class of 2025 baked 13 dozen muffins to be delivered to hospitals for healthcare employees who are working around-the-clock during this hectic time. Their hope was to bring a much needed a break, to let them know they are appreciated and to help them stay healthy. Sophie Clyne from the class of 2022 has started giving anti-bullying sessions via Zoom to Girl Scout troops across the country. She is speaking on behalf of a nonprofit called Crown CARES (Creating A Respectful Environment in Schools). NCL moms Gina Montion and Jill Hicks have provided lifesaving blood donations at a time when blood donations are in high need. They have encouraged other moms in the chapter to sign up and donate as well. Individual members are checking in with NCL philanthropy partners and donating needed supplies to organizations such as Homebase Youth Services, AZ Helping Hands, St. Mary’s Food Bank and more. Moon Valley Chapter members are making masks for Project C.U.R.E. to supply the Banner Health team members and patients with an extra level of protection when not in direct care of patients. The chapter is also making paracord bracelets for Operation Gratitude to donate potentially lifesaving bracelets to U.S. troops around the word. NCL, Inc. is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong mother-daughter relationships through community service, leadership development, and cultural experiences. Members include girls ranging from 7th to 12th grade along with their mothers. For more information about NCL, Inc., please visit our website at moonvalley. nationalcharityleague.org. Moon Valley Neighborhoods: Golden Crest/Cresta del Oro BY JULIE PEK There’s only one way in and one way out of this neighborhood! And that’s via Thunderbird Road. Located between 1st Street and 3rd Street, on the border of North Thunderbird, Golden Crest and Cresta del Oro are two developments that were established back in the late 1960’s / early 1970’s. Del Trailer built the development in 3 phases. First phase was from west of Safeway to 3rd Street and it was named Golden Crest with about 60 homes. Second and third phases stretched west to 1st Street and about 150 more homes were built. Trying to distinguish themselves from the original Golden Crest community, the development took the name Cresta del Oro, the Spanish version. To this day there are two different HOA’s governing the neighborhoods. My good friend and colleague, Chrissy, first bought a home in Golden Crest when she and her young family moved to the area. Her story is interesting. “We wanted to get into Moon Valley, and we ‘bought’ the Golden Crest home a year before we moved in,” she said. “It turned out that the owners were building a custom home and couldn’t move out until completion of their new home.” The time frame worked well for all parties. Her family enjoyed the home for 10 years before moving elsewhere in Moon Valley and they have kept up relationships in the neighborhood. Fast forward about 29 years, and Chrissy gets hired to sell the house she originally bought and lived in! With no through streets into Gold Crest / Cresta del Oro, the neighborhood is quiet and great for neighborhood gatherings and pot lucks. In recent years, homeowners have been updating and fixing up their homes. These single-level homes sell between $350,000 to $450,000 and the average size is about 2,200 to 2,400 square feet. If you’d like to learn more about buying or selling a home in Golden Crest / Cresta del Oro, give me a call!

Celebrating our btc seniors BY ASHLEY TOLIVER, BTC PRESIDENT Even though we have been left with a shortened year, there is still so much to celebrate at boys team charity North Valley League as we end our season. Looking back, this year has been full of making a difference in our community, making commitments and connecting with our Teammates and Coaches. As a League, we collectively volunteered over 3,100 philanthropy hours this past year! Our membership accomplished this by serving our philanthropy partners throughout the Valley. Highlights include: helping young students select much-needed school supplies and clothes at the annual Back-to-School Clothing Drive, preparing and serving meals at St. Vincent dePaul’s downtown campus and our newly added location -the Sunnyslope Dining Room and stocking the shelves at Desert Mission Food Bank. There were many hours served to care for our fur friends at Tranquility Trails and Home Fur Good. Volunteers spent time playing kickball and bowling with Civitan House members and scorekeeping for the Phoenix Banner Wheelchair Suns. Members helped tend the gardens at Tiger Mountain Foundation and worked as servers and bussers at Joy Bus Diner. They packed personal supplies and treats for our troops for Packages from Home and played their musical instruments for residents of Homeward Bound. Lastly, our members donated toys, PJs and stockings to Moms Place and wrapped donated gifts for families on behalf of the Jadie Lynn King Foundation during the Holiday Season. We are so thankful for our Teammates and Coaches brightening our community with their volunteer work. We also want to say how much we value our philanthropy partners and thank them for allowing our members to assist them in their missions. Our Teammates and Coaches shared unique opportunities throughout the year at their Team and General Meetings. We held our Fall General meeting at Chase Field listening to the Diamondback’s SVP of Content and Communications, Josh Rawitch, talk about following your dreams and then attended a Diamondbacks game. They heard guest lecturers covering topics such as “What happens when you turn 18?” from former btc North Valley League member Judge Joe Kreamer, SAT/ ACT test-taking tips and College Admission advice from Pimental Academic Services and about the dangers of drug and opioid use from our Guest Speaker from “Not My Kid” during our Winter meeting and the effects of vaping from member Dr. Amy Rampley. They attended field trips to the FBI’s Gun Vault, and toured Midwestern University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and learned what life is like in the Navy from a Naval recruiter. They learned CPR, First Aid, and Self Defense from community members. They learned the importance of good health and nutrition and
took a Cross Fit class. They went bowling and took an archery class and held a cookie exchange with their buddy class. They also received advice from older btc members on what High School life is like. These opportunities build skills, develop relationships, and foster personal growth. We wish to acknowledge our graduating Senior Class of 2020. These young men deserve a great deal of recognition for all their years of service. Many of them have been members of boys team charity North Valley League for 6 years. Our 16 Teammates of the Class of 2020 include Brandon Baselice, Jackson Biehle, Kyle Black, Carter Davis, Armaan Dwivedi, Grayson Harelson, Ben Hester, Nolan Hoiby, Sebastian Lebert, Dutcher Lindsey, Sebastian Magri, Joshua Moore, Toren Olson, Ravi Patel, Alec Ratner, and Jake Walther. This year their Senior Project focused on renovating the library at Homeward Bound which offers housing and support to homeless families. They also beautified the Homeward Bound campus by cleaning up a garden area. The project required several hours of service which included a reorganization of the Homeward Bound library and set up designated spaces for reading, homework, games, and music. They built Lego walls and chalk walls and painted a mural to enrich the interior of the space. They also built a fence around the garden beds, replanted the beds, and added a “Welcome” sign. The improvements were tremendous and Homeward Bound was so grateful to our boys. We are so grateful to have such an amazing and empathetic group of young men. We wish them all the best as they move forward on their paths and hope they will carry the spirit of btc with them. We will be celebrating our Senior class on May 3rd via a virtual event open to our members. Thank you to all our Teammates, Coaches, Philanthropy liaisons, Team Managers, Appointed positions and Board members for your continued commitment to btc North Valley League. As the saying goes – “it takes a village”. boys team charity is a volunteer service organization dedicated to developing an altruistic spirit in young men through active participation by parents and sons in philanthropic projects in their communities. We are still accepting members for the 2020-2021 btc year for current 6-11th grade boys that live in the 85022, 85023, 85029 zip codes. Time to Mend, Both Our Health & Economy
There continues to be signs of positive strength in our community. I noted these last month and continue to witness new signs: people buying groceries for others, a community share table, and just an overall positive attitude as we all weather the storm of the virus and economy shutdown. This month’s topic is a sensitive one but very relevant so hope you find these insights valuable. I hope that by the time this goes to press, we are experiencing the decline in virus cases & severity. There is now a debate raging on when and how we re-open the economy. There are legitimate concerns on both sides as everyone wants life to start returning to normal without causing increased virus risk. Important to recognize Arizona is not NYC, as we have a much lower number and percentage of cases. More importantly, severe cases requiring hospitalizations have been kept well below our healthcare capacity. However, there has been significant, not yet realized damage to our economy which translates to lost jobs and decreased income for families. Bottom line is that we can’t continue to keep our economy closed, so we need to find ways to re-open and stay safe; we need both. Our leaders are all operating in uncharted territory. They need to hear from us to better understand our wants and needs as they struggle to find the best path forward. I have written to our local leaders and trust me, they value the input from us all. You can find email links on the web for all elected officials: Moon Valley is in state legislative district 20 – so Paul Boyer, Shawnna Bolick and Anthony Kern. We are very well represented by Deb Stark (Phoenix City District 3), City mayor is Kate
BY BRET ALDIERI, MVNA PRESIDENT Gallego and Bill Gates is our Maricopa county supervisor. What I’ve advocated to our leaders is to communicate plans to re-open business, while still limiting virus risk. For example – allow restaurants to open, however have servers wear masks, only book every other table (social distancing), and do a table wipe down between customers. Similar rules can be applied to other businesses – stores, gyms, etc – limit the number of customers that enable proper distancing, and practice hyper diligence on sanitation. In addition, I recommended that workers continue to have the option to work remote, especially if they are in a high-risk category. This will not preclude those of higher risk from continuing to take additional precautions. This is were family, friends and community members need to help so that those at risk can continue to limit their risk until the virus dies down. This approach shifts the burden for personal safety from the government back to each one of us. This is a rational approach, but I do realize that others will have differing opinions. While I write this article, the Federal Government just released a gated economy reopen process. Good to see a plan for the path forward. Decisions are being left to state and local leaders for when to allow aspects to re-open. No doubt, it’s a time for continued patience. Please share your thoughts with our government leaders via an email. Continue to offer help to those at higher risk – let’s take care of our families, friends and neighbors – this is the power of the Moon Valley Community. Please stay safe and healthy! Arizona Women’s Partnership Hits the Half-a-Million Dollar Mark in Grants, as it Awards $52,500 B Y PAU L A C U L L I S O N The Arizona Women’s Partnership, Inc., an allvolunteer philanthropic non-profit, formed in 2002 and based in Moon Valley, which provides grants to grass roots charities that assist underserved women and children at risk in AZ, is pleased to announce that it has hit the $500,000 mark, as it awards another $52,500 in grants. «This is a huge milestone», notes Paula Cullison, Arizona Women›s Partnership founder and President. «We are definitely the little engine that could”, Cullison added. The committee selected 24 2020 Grant Recipients, ranging from organizations providing counseling, food and supplies for underserved youth, photography programs and mentorship, and much more around Arizona.
The AZWP Grant Selection Committee (who met via email) was unanimous in its decision. The Committee of 16 included Moon Valley residents; Paula and Tim Cullison, Pamela and Hector Gill, Dr. Sheela Kalangi and Jeff Gibbs. “We are so pleased that we have been able to assist over 80 charities that address critical needs; most are multi-year grant recipients, notes Pamela Gill, AZWP - VP. “The Arizona Women’s Partnership is especially grateful to the Violet M. Johnson Family Foundation for their generosity which has amounted to $340,000 over the past 13 years. In this wonderful way, they continue to honor their maternal grandmother,” Cullison added. Focusing on Faith & Being Grateful
M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C BY D EB B IE ER BS TO E SSER
I would be lying if I said I wasn’t feeling some angst sometimes, but for the most part – after continually reminding myself to not focus on fear, but rather faith, I am usually able to pull myself out of whatever funk I’m in. I’ve been working on being grateful too. There isn’t an awful lot to be happy about right now, so it takes some work. Sitting down to record it is very helpful though. I have found that there is more to be thankful for than I first realized. I try to write my column way ahead of the deadline, so last month’s MVM was written before the quarantine and craziness, and of course I try to write from a positive point of view. . .thus the word ‘magic’ in the title. I’m relieved that our two college graduates have jobs they can do from home and are still getting paid. Also, that two of our three boys are home with us. Joel works from home and Jaden does college from home. The logistics of four of us on laptops running meetings or classes at the same time gets tricky and bogs down our wifi sometimes, but I’m grateful we have something to do. I miss school/work so badly I tear up. I miss my students, my classroom, the hugs and the ‘I love yous’ from my sweet kiddos, but parents are appreciating us so much more. We’ve had many asking, “How do you keep him on task?” and “How do you make her listen?” . . . it’s magic! hahahahaha I am gratified to have made over 150 masks on my off days from work and that I have a sewing room in which to make them and hold my class meetings. My machines are old, but they work. I have given these masks away as fast as I’ve made them. All I asked was for people to supply the elastic or skinny headbands needed, as my supply is gone. Most people gave more of the stretchy stuff than was needed for their own mask order, like my neighbor Linda who cleaned out her own craft room and the store. Amy, Sharon and Leslie all ransacked their daughter’s hair accoutrements, as well as the store supplies too, all of them making it possible for me to donate to a Hospice and Senior Living Center so that those healthcare workers had protection. I’m ever so happy to have these fantastic neighbors. We’ve had some social distancing happy hours out front, sitting far enough away to be safe, but close enough to hear each other. We supplied our own drinks and chairs, limiting our physical contact, but it felt so good to see everyone again. The dogs were pretty happy to see each other too, all of them stayed in OUR yards and didn’t stray! I’m glad I deleted facebook from my phone for a while and the ‘Nextdoor’ app completely as they were bringing me down. Life hasn’t been completely rosy over here and I didn’t need the negativity. Gary’s cousin took her life and he herniated another disc. We couldn’t visit him when he had to spend a night in the hospital and he was in too much pain to regularly communicate. Now we just have to wait for the Covid Crisis is dissipate, so he can have back
surgery. For now, he gets epidurals, does special exercises and tries to rest. I am so grateful to Anytime Fitness for supplying us members with a link to their fitness programs, and to Kristen Hustead (owner of wellbalancedbyKristen. com) for leading free exercise classes via Zoom. I’ve known Kristen since our boys were in preschool. My sessions with her have been as good for my body as my mind. Then there’s Ambry Mehr posting exercises that can be done from home on her Instagram page; ambymehr. She’s the sweetest, tiniest little dynamo; I’ve known her since she was a toddler. I am grateful that I can still wear my jeans and need a belt to keep them up. I read that we should remember to try them on every now and then because our pajamas and leggings lie. I’m happy that I had the willpower to stop snacking and drinking wine every night; even though the snacks were gluten free…they weren’t calorie free. While the wine might help to make me more relaxed and a little less inhibited, I don’t need alcohol to feel the music move me. The family time we’ve had sitting on the back patio listening to music, dancing, laughing, reminiscing and speaking frankly of our love for each other has probably been the highlight of this whole quarantine thing. We made memories discussing our feelings and memories and sending Jon (who lives and works in Scottsdale) videos, messages and pictures, telling him we wished he was with us. It wasn’t the same, but it felt better talking about him, including him and sharing our feelings over our phones. You don’t need to have a ‘faith’ based on a church’s beliefs or any kind of religion. I’m actually more spiritual than religious. To have faith that you can get through this works too. Staying strong and not completely giving in to the depression and fear of the unknown and what our new normal will be after this is important for our psyche. It’s everywhere; on the tv and chalked onto sidewalks, ‘We’re in this Together’ and we are. We’ve got this!
