Trapped in Moon Valley? Well can you think of a better place to be? I just returned from Trumansburg New York, celebrating my grandmother’s long life of 104.7, some people ask why the .7? I was told babies and people over 100 should always use the months when talking about their age.

Funerals are both sad and yet very happy. This one was just such, getting the opportunity to live, love and be loved by a woman who was such an integral part of my life and my family’s was hard to saying goodbye to. My gram was such an amazing woman to each and every one of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even great-great. She took the time to know each one of us intimately, and how to not only play, mentor and counsel us but truly interested in what we were doing, how our life was going, our spouse, and our work. At 104.7, she still knew each of us, what we were doing, what sports the kids were playing, who was where, and even shared in our problems of life. When we would ask her to tell us the secret to her long life, she would smile- “a beer a day” kept me young.

Throughout the week, we walked in and about the many rooms of her huge 3 story, old Victorian home on the corner of Whig and Elm Street. It was a beauty in the day, a cupola at the very top, and a grand staircase, which lead us to the bedrooms. Many of us had lived with her for short periods, as her house is a 2-family dwelling. We would run the streets after school and weekends playing kickball and hide go seek, as well as kissing the neighbor boys in grade school years.

As we opened cupboards and drawers so many familiar “things” were still there.

The memories of Saturday night sleep overs, pink curlers, orange soda and bugles, card games, and mass on Sundays.

There it was, a big basket of “Dawn,” gram had kept most all I had sent her, postcards from my rotary exchange year in the Philippines (1980- 81), postcards from my travels around the world as a travel agent, and all the Tattler articles I have written for the past 15 years, clipped and preserved in plastic.

Rookie Mom: Through the Extraordinary Overwhelm In this column, I often explore what it’s like to be a messy, natural human being.

We are dynamic and mercurial creatures -- bouncing from the joys of life to its lessons.

Writer David Foster Wallace gave a wonderful commencement speech at Kenyon College entitled “This is Water” in 2005. In his speech, given to 22-yearold liberal art graduates, Wallace discusses the adult monotony of life, one of which could never be taught directly to young students, but only experienced through the age of life.

The thread of his thesis is that these young graduates have not had the “day in and day out” routine of waking up, going to work, managing family, and then starting over again, day after day, year after year.

This may sound bleak, yet that’s not my intention. My intention is to wish that we had more empathy and compassion for one another -- with the hope that age doesn’t allow us to learn that.

As a high school media teacher, I work directly with teenagers who have not been in the classroom since 7th grade. Even though they are teens, trying to figure out the world post-quarantine, I’ve noticed the lack of emotional awareness that they have for others, often jumping to base assumptions of their peers and teachers.

These children want and need our attention; I one-hundred percent understand and agree with that. On the flip side, I wish that they were not so quick to judge others who are also going through things that they cannot visibly recognize day to day; they haven’t had the experience.

I am a tired teacher, mother, and wife. I have one 50-minute prep that is often reassigned to cover another teacher’s classroom if they are absent, even at the request of me being unable to substitute for that class because I’m overwhelmed with planning… and not doing a great job teaching.

Teachers in our district are supposed to be joyous that we get paid our “hourly salary rate,” but I honestly just want the time to teach well and plan for my three classes, along with planning the yearbook, and managing the video and blog production of the school’s digital journalism program -- which I love -- but it’s staggering and I have little support.

My daughter’s ear tubes fell out and she’s having sinus issues which is never

B Y B R I G H I D CO N S TA B L E fun. And right now, she’s going through a resurrangance of a temper tantrum stage, which as all parents know is downright exhausting. The meltdowns in public and giving every ounce to be patient and loving and… empathetic towards her development.

I was in line the other day at the store and two men were in front of me, discussing teachers in Arizona. How so many teachers “quit” during quarantine and that they’re “not voting to support teachers” this year, especially how we “made a fuss over Red for Ed a few years back.”

I wanted to scream. And cry, which I did when I got home. I wanted to tell these two clueless men and say that I had a literal breakdown and was in the hospital due to the overwhelm of it all and needed a much-needed break during teaching in 2020.

I overthink about the safety of my students and the quality education they receive.

I wanted to say that I have replaced a teacher, who was beloved at the school I’m currently in, who died of Covid before me and that it’s a struggle to be compared to such a beloved person.

I want to communicate with my principal and other teachers and say, “I am overwhelmed! I handle emotional things differently and my brain can spiral.” But I’m afraid. I’m afraid due to past relationships I’ve had with leaders when I do express my overwhelm, and their often change their perspective when I express my needs.

The stigma is very real, and it sucks.

So my rant is over, and what do I want you to do? I just want you to be kind and be open to others because life is good, but hard, and I’m ready for a nap.

The first quarter of the school year is nearly over. Our teachers and staff have been working tirelessly to continue to provide the best education to our students while keeping health and safety at the forefront of every decision. Thank you for continuing to support them and the WESD. WESD Governing Board Member Selected as Top 5 Finalist for Teacher of the Year: WESD Governing Board Member Lindsey Peterson was selected as one of five finalists for the Arizona Educational Foundation (AEF) Teacher of the Year award. These five finalists, known as “Ambassadors for Excellence” are in the running for the 2022 Arizona Teacher of the Year. Lindsey is a teacher in the Glendale Union High School District at Apollo High School in addition to serving on our Governing Board.

Though she was not selected as a finalist, we are incredibly proud of Alyssa Weed, music teacher at Acacia Elementary School, for being selected as a semifinalist. She is a truly exceptional educator who ensures that all student have an authentic learning experience in her class.

Both of these outstanding educators will be honored at the AEF Teacher of the Year awards ceremony on October 16, where the Arizona Teacher of the Year will be announced.

Asset protection for your heirs

I was asked recently by a client whether the revocable living trust we were creating for him THE L AW OFFICE OF LIBBY BANK S would protect his assets from his creditors. The answer is no. While the revocable trust is a great estate planning and probate avoidance tool, it is not an asset protection trust. Because you still have full control over the assets in your revocable living trust, the law recognizes that they are your assets, and your creditors can get to them in the same way as if they were in your personal name and not in your trust.

I went on to tell him that while his revocable trust didn’t protect him from his debts, we could structure the inheritance he’s leaving to his children to protect them – and not just from potential creditors. How do we do that? Instead of your trust saying that your beneficiaries get their inheritance outright (i.e., they get a check and do with it what they want), your trust can direct that each beneficiary receives his or her share in an irrevocable trust.

Trusts Can Keep an Inheritance Out of the Hands of Creditors: These beneficiary trusts do provide asset protection for the trust assets. An outright gift of the inheritance can result in a beneficiary’s creditors snatching all your hard-earned money. Here is a real-life example (details changed to protect confidentiality): Son started a business, but in the economic downturn of 2008 the business failed.

He filed bankruptcy. A month after filing his Mom died, leaving him everything in an outright distribution. It was all his. Except it wasn’t his. Instead, because he had filed bankruptcy, it all went to his bankruptcy trustee.

Had Mom given him the assets in trust, he might have completed the bankruptcy without using the assets in the trust and, after the bankruptcy, the assets in trust could have given him a fresh start.

Trusts Can Protect Irresponsible Heirs from themselves: My client mentioned that his son had addiction issues in the past, and while his son has been clean and sober for a while, he still had concerns.

I mentioned that when the trusts for beneficiaries are created, the irrevocable

trusts can provide protection for beneficiaries who might not manage the inheritance well. This works not only for those with addiction issues, but also for children (or the child’s spouse) who are spendthrifts, very bad with money, or just too young to handle the sum they are inheriting. Leaving the money in trust doesn’t mean you don’t provide for them. The trust will allow for discretionary distributions to them for their health, education, maintenance and general welfare.

Giving the inheritance in an irrevocable trust allows your beneficiary to benefit from the assets but doesn’t give them unlimited access to spend on whatever they please.

Trusts Can Protect Inheritance in Case of Your Beneficiary’s Divorce or Death:

My client liked the idea of the irrevocable trust and asked me about protecting his daughter’s inheritance from her husband. The marriage was a bit rocky, and he was concerned about what would happen if she decided to divorce him after getting her inheritance.

I explained that if a beneficiary is divorcing, or has a rocky marriage, leaving the inheritance in trust can assure that your beneficiary keeps the inheritance and doesn’t lose part of it in a divorce. The assets held in trust won’t be divided up, because the inherited trust is separate property that belongs only to the beneficiary and not their spouse.

An outright distribution of the inheritance, however, is likely to be commingled in accounts held by both the beneficiary and their spouse. The assets then may be considered community property and some portion will go to the divorcing spouse.

Another advantage my client liked was the fact that we could state in the trust that when his daughter passed away the remaining assets in the trust would go to his grandchildren. If his daughter had a healthy marriage and put the inheritance in her name with her husband, what happens when his daughter passes away? If her husband remarries, there is a real possibility that the assets may go to the new wife when he dies and not to the grandchildren. Providing for the inheritance to be held in a trust for his daughter, and on her passing for her children, can help prevent this scenario.

Quick, Nutritious Meals on Hectic School Nights

B Y K AT H Y G L I N D M E I E R With school back in session, parents are busy juggling work, carpools, childcare and extracurricular activities. How do you fit meal preparation and cooking into busy school night schedules? Planning ahead can help reduce stress and ensure that the meals you serve are nutritious and within your budget.

Start by making a list of seven to ten meals your family enjoys. Create a weeknight rotation for several weeks at a time and use theme nights such as Meatless Monday, Taco Tuesday, Soup and Sandwich or Backwards Night (breakfast for dinner). Kids love to help plan theme meals.

Time-Saving Meal Tips

• At the beginning of the week, spend 60 to 90 minutes to prep food such as taco meat, pasta sauces and stews, so they can be ready to use later in the week.

• Crock Pots and Instapots are perfect for preparing food in double batches and freezing half. Food can be precooked and stored in the refrigerator for six days or frozen for up to three months.

• Sheet pan meals are an easy way to create an entire meal using only one pan — and that means less cleanup time. For example, fajitas can be prepared in less than 30 minutes by slicing raw chicken breasts or steak, peppers and onions and drizzling with taco seasoning and oil.

Cook at 425 degrees for 25 minutes.

• Grilling during the week is another time-efficient way to make tasty meals and keep the kitchen cool. Individual cuts of meat cook quickly on the grill.

• In the cold and frozen sections of the grocery store, you will find pasta such as ravioli and tortellini. Combine them with purchased or homemade marina sauce and you have a quick, kid-friendly meal.

• If you’re cooking pasta, boil water in a frying pan to cut down on the cook time.

• Look for time-saving foods such as “no cook” lasagna noodles to put together tasty meals with precooked ground meat from the freezer and marina sauce.

Easy Ways to Add Protein to Meals

• Rotisserie chicken is available in most grocery stores. It is fully cooked and ready to eat. To keep the sodium to a minimum, use the chicken meat and discard the skin. Chopped chicken meat can be used for soups, casseroles and chicken salad. It can also be frozen and used during the week as a quick source of protein.

• Canned tuna is another readily available source of protein for sandwiches or casseroles.

• Eggs are economical, cook quickly and can be used in a variety of ways on busy school nights.

• Make a delicious chili in less than 30 minutes by combining canned beans, canned diced tomatoes and precooked ground beef.

Advance planning not only helps you save time in the kitchen, but also gives you more quality time with your family at the dinner table, so you can enjoy a well-balanced meal and meaningful conversation.

Hollywood Dreams Come True for Moon Valley Kids A pipe-dream no more, Moon Valley children ages 9 through 18 can now follow their Hollywood desires through acting workshops with ROSSI Talent Management, a new agency by talent manager Robert Rossi. For those of you Moon Valley High School graduates circa 1980, the name Robert Rossi may sound familiar. He was co-captain of your Moon Valley Cheer Squad alongside Lisa Kerker, and now after spending decades living a successful career in LA, is coming back home to establish his roots and legacy back in Moon Valley. The mission? Helping kids in the Valley who want to break into Hollywood.

“Why should a kid who wants to be an actor not have a chance just because they live in Arizona and not California?” he asks. Rossi explains children from Arizona are refreshing to the industry: they aren’t overcoached and there is a great focus on the sport of acting. “Why should a kid have to wait until they’re 18 to do what they want just because they’re 9 or 10? Let’s give it a shot. This is about giving kids options.”

And options he is all about. Rossi explains he works hand-in-hand with families, and champions the power in planning and saying “no.” It’s about ensuring everyone is comfortable and not taking on a role that does not benefit the child. It’s about preventing families from uprooting their lives to move to LA just for “a shot that may not come.”

“You don’t have to be like Hilary Duff and her mom, who moved across the nation to live in a tiny apartment,” Rossi emphasizes. With his talent, experience, connections and with adapted ways to attend auditions such as via Zoom, Rossi can help kids right in Moon Valley. “I’m going to work with these children to help them follow their dreams. The next Emma Stone needs to be a kid from Moon Valley!”

Helping children establish acting careers is something Robert Rossi has been doing for a while—teen sensation Daniel DiMaggio, one of the “it” teens in the industry who played the role of Oliver Otto in ABC’s American Housewife, has been his client since he was just 3. Newest additions to his acting family include Hailey Glicksman, a 14 year old stage actor, who has been able to use that foundation of theatre to now land her first role out of the gate, and it’s a big one. “I can’t guarantee you’ll get a sitcom, but Hollywood is going to see this cute little face and know you. 6 months later, you may get a call – [for example] Reese Ganley used to live in Phoenix, and now is in LA.” If it sounds like Robert Rossi is the right conduit, this author would have to agree with you.

For Rossi, helping people succeed is second nature. He has a magnetism about him that’s contagious. And, even though he’s worked with and hobnobbed with some of the biggest movie and television stars, he’s the most down-toearth, go-out-of-his-way-to-help-you type of person. It doesn’t matter who you are—Lady Gaga at the Academy Awards needing to be guided into the theatre after she got separated from her group or Reese Witherspoon needing help with her dress on the red carpet after someone stepped on it (both of these happened) to representing deaf actors. Yes, Rossi is fluent in ASL, all because one day he saw an interpreter for the deaf at a U2 concert and said “I need to learn that!”

Shaw Butte Trail:

A workout

When he turned 40, Shane was looking to find a graceful way to slide down the back of the hill of life. So he added hiking the hill of Shaw Butte to his workout routine. He climbs to the summit 3 to 4 days a week and goes to the gym on the other days. He liked hiking with his 3 dogs who would easily make it to the top.

The dogs helped him connect with other hikers over the years – there’s something about running on the trail with your terrier mix and yorkie that make people stop and wonder if those little legs can really make it to the top! Yes, they used to. Now he hikes without them and enjoys meeting up with other dogs and their owners.

Shane loves the peacefulness of hiking Shaw Butte. With his busy job as project manager for a building automation company, he manages to get his hike in early by starting at 5:00 a.m. “In the winter months, I take a flashlight with me and I’m pleasantly surprised to see many others on the trail at that dark hour,” he said. It’s a great way to start his day.

There have been a few injuries over the years from falls going downhill – a broken finger and a broken toe. But thankfully, Shane was able to finish those hikes on his own.

It happens to everyone at some point, and as a result, he doesn’t take the trail for granted.

Reverse mortgage purchase THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON Imagine if you could buy your dream home in retirement, put about half down and regardless of how long you remain in your home, you don’t have to pay principal and interest payments. This “dream” scenario is possible with a Reverse Mortgage for Purchase. Insured by FHA, this version is called a HECM4P. (HECM is an acronym for Home Equity Conversion Mortgage).

Some advantages are: • Eliminate monthly mortgage payments (must still pay property taxes, hazard insurance and HOA fees) • Stay in your home and keep the title • Heirs inherit the home and keep any remaining equity after paying off the HECM • Loan insured by FHA • Loan proceeds not taxed You must be at least 62 years old to qualify, and frankly the FHA formulas that determine the percentage of funds available (called the Principal Limit) are skewed toward older borrowers, thus the older you are, the more you qualify for.

The rule of thumb is that you need to put 50% down to make this work. The actual percentage required could be more or less depending on your age.

This version of a Reverse Mortgage is based on the premise that seniors can use the equity from the sale of their previous home to buy their next primary residence and eliminate monthly mortgage payments. You can down-size to a more manageable residence or leverage your available funds to move into your dream mansion. Moving closer to family or friends is an option, while allowing you to lower the cost of living during retirement.

My editorial comment is, if the home value estimates that we receive on-line from Zillow, Realtor.com and Redfin are to be believed, in the Phoenix area your equity will continue to grow in spite of the increasing mortgage balance that is inherent in a Reverse Mortgage. Regardless, of what happens to the home market, this is a non recourse loan, thus you will never have to pay back more than your home would sell for. If any, a shortfall will be paid by FHA, not your estate or your heirs.

This is a great loan for seniors. It allows them to maintain their lifestyle without making concessions to retirement. If interested, get with a trusted Reverse Mortgage Loan Officer and explore your options. You will be glad you did.

BY ADRIENNE SANFORD, ANNIE HARTMAN AND JOY CLARK Our boys team charity organization is off to an awesome start with our first general meeting of the year on September 12th. Our theme for this meeting was “No Sidelines to Your Wellness”! The purpose of this meeting was to hear some insights and advice from experts in the area of nutrition, mental well-being and fitness. Our panel of guest speakers included Mik Hrabczuk, Tyla Piehler and Nikki Augustine.

Mr. Hrabczuk shared his weight lifting background which led him to competing in Olympic Weightlifting. As an Olympic athlete, he placed in the country’s top 50.

For the last 6 years he has trained many athletes and helped them make gains in strength, speed, confidence and mentality. He is the owner of MACH 1 Sports, M1 Hoops and Myth Strength Company. Given the obstacles with his height and being considered the underdog, he has found his passion in coaching the athletes who have been counted out-the ones who have a dream that seems too crazy and too big to others. During his presentation, he expressed the importance of believing in yourself even if you are the underdog, even if others have already put a particular label on you. He also mentioned that the boys should play multiple sports and take some time off to enjoy their youth and let the body rest!

Ms. Piehler is a Perks & Wellness Specialist for Carvana where she focuses on company - wide wellbeing initiatives surrounding physical, mental, social and financial wellness. She is also a spin instructor at CycleBar. In her free time, she enjoys writing content for her blog, “Look for Yellow” which aims to spread awareness and provide resources to make feeling your best mentally less of a challenge. Ms. Piehler relayed some great tools for our teens to utilize when things get a little difficult. When we start feeling some of those anxieties that are natural for us all to experience, she mentioned writing thoughts down in a journal and getting plenty of rest. She shared with parents that one good way to check in with our teens is to ask, “How was your day 1 to 10?”

We were fortunate to have Ms. Augustine, who is a Registered Dietitian and Program Coordinator for the Washington Elementary School District. She oversees the school menus, special diets, Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program as well as the Nutrition Education Program. She has been with the district for over 11 years. She is also an adjunct instructor at Glendale Community College teaching Human Nutrition lecture and lab. Ms. Augustine discussed the importance of getting vitamins and minerals from the foods we eat, drinking plenty of water, and making sure we watch all of the extra sugar and fats that sneak into our daily diets. In addition, she clarified that just because you workout, doesn’t mean you can eat whatever you want. You have to fuel your body with the foods that will give you energy and keep you on a healthy path.

Finally, we enjoyed some healthy protein treats provided by EatCleanPHX and some delicious shakes from Phoenix Nutrition!

After hearing from our special guests, our boys have some important information to take them through their day to day experiences as they embark on a new school year. At the September 7th Black Mountain Community Alliance Jason Toth, Phoenix Police Department Detective, explained what the Crisis Response Network (CrisisNetwork.org) is and how it meshes with agencies and private organizations.

Detective Toth explained that over 60% of 911 calls to the Phoenix Police Department are the result of various personal crises people are having in their lives. The latest statistic about mental illness is that one in four people will have a crisis sometime in their lives. Those are high numbers. No crime is involved.

Sometimes having police respond can escalate a situation and involve neighbors unnecessarily. If a crime is imminent, of course, the police will come. If a crime is not likely to happen, there are some important services it is important to know about. The goal is to negotiate solutions that do not involve “bad decisions,” especially ones involving violence.

So far this year, the Phoenix Police Department has experienced a million calls for service. Dispatchers are trained to ask more questions of callers to determine as closely as possible what the real need is. Once that is determined, the appropriate services can be provided, hopefully in a timely way. All calls are carefully documented as are all visits by the police.

Thankfully the crime numbers compared to last year in our precinct are about the same. The Department is handling many calls differently from in the past.

For depression, schizophrenia, agoraphobia, people being evicted, veterans with PTSD, some domestic violence cases, non-violent threats against co-workers or neighbors, and impending suicide, there can be help from the Crisis Intervention Team.Documentation is important. The “See something, say something” motto applies. Loved ones and others can call the Crisis Response Network at (602)2229444 and let the staff help determine the best course of action. Sometimes a written report can be filed with a physician ready to take action on the case.

Sometimes a team of specially trained police officers not wearing badges and driving regular cars will come and de-escalate a situation. Of course, each case is different. Other times an individual will need special care in a facility until they receive treatment. Often they will be connected with professionals who will provide on-going support. Help with housing or job training or placement will be provided. Sometimes a health diagnosis will trigger changes in behavior.

It is really good to know that these services are available through our police department. This is not the only help the City provides. There are many programs available for people who are experiencing confusion and helplessness. If you or someone you care about needs help, you can call Jason Toth, Detective, directly at (602)501-3348. He has been working with people who need help for 30 years in Phoenix. He and his team are ready to assist people to find their way in this huge city. Sometimes we find ourselves facing very confusing situations.

We are grateful that the Phoenix Police Department has taken this direction and is providing training to as many regular duty officers as possible. And we are grateful to the members of the Crisis Intervention Network team for their important heart-felt work. The Network is open every day round the clock.

Dear Edna, Even in today’s digital age many of us still love to print. There are tons of printers to choose from and many models seem super economical. But yikes! Buying ink cartridges is like buying a small car. Wait, maybe the car is cheaper.

The fact of the matter is cheap printers are designed to break after a certain period of time. All printers have what’s called a ‘duty cycle,’ which is the maximum number of prints the machine can handle per month. Cheap printers have a notoriously low duty cycle. You might think, ‘well I don’t print very much.’ But when that one month, like tax time April, comes around and you print over that 50-100 page limit, you stress out the inner parts. It’s like doing a triathlon with a cheap pacemaker.

Next, a little secret printer manufacturers don’t tell you is that they intentionally sell printers super cheap, take the loss, mark up and recover it on the cartridges. Yeah.

Gives all machines a bad reputation and us robots don’t like it either.

Many low-priced printers will bundle fax, scanning and copy features. But these added features may be heavily watered down and provide poor resolutions. Consumers see “Multifunctional” or “All in One” and think they are getting a great deal. Do you even need a fax? Ask a teenager what a fax is, and they’ll give you a blank stare.

Cheaper printers are notoriously slow in printing multiple pages. If you have time on your hands, this may not concern you. But printing pretty party invites with ridiculously long wait times adds up.

So, what is a good printer? Inkjet? Laser? The biggest difference between inkjet and laser printers is that an inkjet printer uses ink, good for low volume printing, while a laser printer uses toner, which is ideal for high volume printing. If you’re looking for a home printer for occasional printing, an inkjet printer is great. However, a common complaint with inkjet printers is that the ink dries up if you don’t use it often. Laser printers are known to be more durable. If you’re looking to print professional highresolution photos, go with a photo inkjet printer.

A new feature to investigate are ink tank printers. Finally! Something that makes sense. Now you can buy bottles of ink and fill the ink canisters. The printer costs a bit more on the front side but the ink...oh so economical.

A few of you are shaking your head, ‘why print at all?’ you ask, when we live in this new digital age where we can just store everything in the cloud? Ah, but that is a topic for another time. And I’m pretty sure those people never smelled a paper that just rolled off the mimeograph machine back in the day, that made us fall in love with the printed page we could hold, sniff and write on.

Ruby Roo

Like so many before her, Ruby Roo(675280) headed west for a shot at a better life. This sweet Australian Cattle Dog mix had been patiently waiting for a new home at the Louisiana ASPCA until Mother Nature intervened in her story.

Hurricane Ida slammed into Louisiana, leaving the SPCA without power or even clean water to care for their animals.

With the lives of pets like Ruby Roo in jeopardy, the Arizona Humane Society knew they had to act quickly. AHS deployed a team of six staff members, who drove through the night to reach these pets who had nowhere else to go.

Together, they brought 14 cats and 26 dogs, including Ruby Roo, back to Arizona for a second chance at a great life.

Ruby Roo and the rest of the Hurricane Ida survivors have now recovered from their 22-hour road trip and are adjusting well. With her paws now safely on dry land, Ruby Roo’s sweet personality has begun to blossom. She is very friendly and affectionate. She greets everyone she meets with a big tail wag. Now, she is searching for a home of her own here in Arizona. She would love to find an active family who can take her on hikes and long walks.

For the Arizona Women’s Partnership (AZWP), an all volunteer philanthropic non-profit headquartered in Moon Valley, the flowers in the AZWP garden come as supporters and volunteers. “Our garden has been growing since 2002. Many flowers continue to bloom for us via ‘job’ postings on volunteermatch.org, notes Paula Cullison, President and Founder of the Arizona Women’s Partnership.

Recently, we decided to create a fillable online grant application form. Not having the expertise to do this, we posted on volunteermatch.org The first reply was from Emily Bowen, a recent Scottsdale Community College graduate who majored in Computer Information System Technologies. Emily is currently working on a contract basis, as she searches for a full time position in web design.

We are so fortunate that Emily came our way. She is very knowledgeable and responsive. I am starting my 4th year as a Moon Valley Chapter,My National (NCL) member. NCL is a philanthropic group that focuses on the mother-daugh602 community, develter relationship to grow young women in the areas of supporting oping leadership skills, and embracing diversity through cultural experiences and www.wellness-in-motion.com special events. Covid-19 introduced challenges to how a14001 groupN.like functions 7th NCL St, Suite E-109 and we all had to shift to virtual interactions. Last month, I joined my NCL class Phoenix, AZ 85002 for our first get together since the pandemic began. On August 14th the class of 2024 gathered for our annual summer “Lock-In”. For many of us, this was our first time seeing each other in almost two years. And for a few others, it was their first ever in-person NCL event. At the event we spent time getting to know each other through icebreaker activities, including a scavenger hunt. We had a structured meeting to discuss business, but also had an opportunity to talk and laugh about our summer and the year to come. Class member, Jenna Mathis, shared “it was interesting seeing everyone without a mask. It made me feel happy and look forward to this coming year.”

As we spent this time together I could see the faces of my peers light up. “Virtual NCL was difficult.

Seeing everyone at the ‘Lock-In’ was so exciting. It was nice to meet the new girls and show them the way we run meetings in-person. It made me realize how much we all had missed this experience,” said fellow classmate Malia Parris. Living in the pandemic has affected teenagers in many negative ways. Over 25% of high school students reported worsened mental health as soon as the pandemic hit. Being able to see people, once again, made everyone appreciate our NCL meeting and how it brought us all together. It made us realize that NCL is not only a place where we volunteer, it is also a place that brings young women together and allows us to connect in healthy ways. NCL also helps us become leaders in the community, and provides us with experiences like our class “Lock In” that benefit our emotions and mental health positively too.

I am glad to have NCL to keep me involved, focused and sharing experiences, not just social media messages and texts with others in my class of 2024.

NCL, Inc. is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong mother-daughter relationships through community service, leadership development, and cultural experiences. Counter the couch potato

The couch potato – it’s alive in just about all of us; but some keep it trapped inside, while others let it run wild – although D .N W , running certainly isn’t the operative word. Sedentary lifestyles C.M.T., D.C. M T more of our loved ones, friends and co-workers every day in the form C are killing C of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and more. You might be putting yourself at risk as well ... if you’re letting your couch potato run wild.

Fortunately, there’s a way to counter couch potato syndrome, and it doesn’t take as much effort as you might think. It’s called physical activity and doing only a little of it consistently can make a big difference. Here’s how, according to recent research.

A single minute of moderate to vigorous exercise offsets 14 minutes of sedentary behavior; extrapolated, that means a mere five minutes of exercise counters an entire hour of sedentary time – sitting, standing still or otherwise “doing nothing” in terms of movement. The study, published in the European Heart Journal, evaluated cardiorespiratory fitness in both environments (intense exercise vs. sedentary time) in arriving at their exciting conclusions.

The take-home message: If you can’t even imagine spending hours at the gym or outside exercising, appreciate that you don’t have to – at least not right away. It’s all about getting off that couch and moving! Remember, every minute of moderate to vigorous exercise takes away nearly 15 minutes of “sitting around.”

Season Changes Are Here, Time to be Outdoors!

I grew up in Connecticut, so the cooler weather of October, especially at night, with leaves changing color and being raked into piles signaled the start of fall sports: Football and Soccer. It’s not much different here – expect no colorful foliage (unless you venture out of Phoenix), and summer is always lurking for a comeback. It’s been a great year for rainfall, and the mountains reflect this with their varying hues of green. The higher rainfall has also caused more weeds so important to tackle those before they grow out of control. Golf courses are just starting their winter overseed, so many will be shut down for 3 to 4 weeks to get the winter rye grass growing. Important for walkers on any course to stay off the fairways, tee boxes and greens during overseed time, please give the young grass a chance to grow.

It’s a great time to be outside – though the day light hours are shrinking (sun rising after 6:30AM; and setting before 6:30 PM). It’s Important to pay extra attention when driving to joggers, bikers, kids going to and from school, especially in Moon Valley proper where there are few lighted streets.

Our community is surrounded by great hiking options with numerous mountain trails in and around our community. The city of Phoenix offers a website that defines many of our hiking options. You can find this information at: https://www.phoenix.gov/parks/trails/locations. One of my favorite hiking options is around Lookout Mountain. You can access trails from the parking lot off 16th street, but also from the west side off 12th street. The hikes are mostly easy

to moderate, and you can pick the amount of elevation that you are interested to challenge. The hike to the summit is a bit challenging but the views from the top is well worth the effort. Another other good hiking option is Shaw Butte – with many options from the front and back of the mountain. These are longer hike options, with greater elevation changes, though a gradual incline with a good dirt road or well-marked trails.

It’s not too early to start planning for the upcoming holidays. The first big one is Halloween – which is always fun in Moon Valley. I have started to see folks decorating their houses with orange lights and expect soon to see creepy spiders, webs, and other fun characters.

The Christmas holiday light judging contest will resume this year December 3 – 5 and hopefully MVNA will have a party bus, also known as the home decorating judge bus to tour on either Friday or Saturday night that week to score the efforts. This is an “adults only” bus – but open to the neighbors for no cost on a first come, first serve basis. Please drop us an email MVNA if you would like to reserve a seat or two.
