The Ordinary BY DR. SANDI HOWLETT As we enter October, we exit the surface of the sun and relocate to the cooling suburbs of autumn! Ah, evenings on the patio and lower AC bills at last! Welcome back great weather! Most of us are creatures of habit. When daily routines are in place, life is easy, taking little thought and sometimes even boring, but easy for sure. You get up around the same time, do your morning routine of the daily things you do. Some estimates say that up to 70% of what we do in the first hour after awakening is auto-pilot habit…this may be a low estimate! It’s efficient and simple. Reflect on what you did this morning compared to yesterday. It is easy to take for granted the ordinary, the mundane. A night of good sleep; getting out of bed on your own; all body parts functioning as designed; that first cup of coffee; electricity, a hot shower and now, cooler mornings. People you love are nearby inperson or by phone and you have the ability to see or talk to them as you wish. We can take the ordinary for granted and assume that our stable routines and conveniences will always be there -- until they aren’t… Lately several of my friends are facing extraordinary challenges within their families, many of them involve serious health situations. The previously predictable ease and nature of their days, their ordinary routines, have been turned upside down. They now juggle multiple dr appointments all over the place (after the challenge and wait of GETTING the appointment), new or awaited diagnoses, treatment protocols, upended schedules, plans changed or canceled, plus the

physical and emotional stress of dealing with the new ‘whatever’. And sometimes that is the worst part, the unknowing of the latest ‘whatever’ that awaits. That is hard. It can cause soul level tremors of anxiety, dread and more. When something happens to change our health, routines may go out the window while uncertainty, upheaval, and pain often move in. All this creates a variety of stress responses. The stress responses can create additional health challenges compounding an already difficult situation. If this is you now, remember and recognize the gift of the ORDINARY, the comfortable routines that supported you without thought. Those are small daily ways that are so easily taken for granted. Today, celebrate your ‘ordinary’. Notice and appreciate the easy things. If you are in a chapter of chaos, do what you can to bring back a tiny bit of those boring patterns to give yourself a moment of respite, a bit of breathing space to help you weather the storm you are navigating. That cup of coffee on the patio in the morning, looking at the moon tonight, the softness of a familiar blanket or the fur of a beloved pet. For a moment, find and celebrate the ordinary for the gift it is. Dr. Sandi Howlett is a Grief Specialist, speaker, and writer based in Phoenix. She may be contacted at drsandihowlett@gmail.com

Fall is more than just a shift in the weather—it’s a time when our entire community comes alive with festivals, markets, ball games, fundraisers, and so much more. A Moon Valley Champion MOON VALLEY MAGIC BY DEBBIE ERBSTOESSER Our local Moon Valley girl, Kate MacDonald, was named to 2026 AVCA Junior Beach First Team All American. One of only eight girls in the US and only the 2nd time anyone from Arizona has made the 1st team. What an honor for her to be recognized as she leaves Xavier and starts her career at Boise State to play on their beach team and major in business. She competed in 32 total tournaments in the summer of 2025, finishing in third place or better in 19 of them and ended with nine first-place finishes, including back-to-back AAU National Championship victories and a first-place finish at the Beach Prospects National Showcase. She played with Delaney Singleton from Sandra Day O’Conner High School who is now playing at the University of Hawaii. In Arizona she played for Dune Beach Volleyball club and for Xavier College Prep where she won the 6A Pairs State Championship with her partner Vivian Hickman in 2026. I have known Kate since she was in preschool and am very happy for her and her family.

My trip to Universal Studios BY ARCHER CUSHMAN Last month my family went to Universal Studios. Usually when we visit California, we go to Legoland, but this time we went to Universal Studios. Our trip started with a six hour long car ride, reading books, coloring, and watching movies. We stopped once to visit a friend, and then hit the road again. When we finally made it to California, we were exhausted. We stayed at my uncle’s and aunt’s house; it was so nice to see them! Must Sees… The next day, we headed Bowser’s Challenge to Universal Studios. I loved all the different lands (or theme Harry Potter & the Forbidden Journey parks) and the rides. If you ever go to Universal Studios, Jurassic Park ride here are some must see rides and some rides you should Studio Backlot Tour ride only ride if you have time. WaterWorld show One of my favorite lands was Harry Potter land. In Harry Potter land, the main feature is the huge Hogwarts castle. Inside the castle was the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride. On the ride you become immersed in the setting of the third Harry Potter book as you go on an unforgettable journey. There are dragons, dementors, and so much more! Another one of my favorite lands was Marioland. First of all, Marioland is so pretty to look at. There are mushrooms, piranha plants, question blocks, and so
much more! The main ride in Marioland is Bowser’s Challenge. On the ride, you and three others share a go-kart and try to collect coins by throwing shells at Bowser’s crew. The ride uses VR head sets
If you have time… The Simpsons ride Kung Fu Panda Adventure show The Secret Life of Pets ride
(that look like Mario hats) to give you a unique riding experience. Despicable Me ride The Jurassic World ride features Revenge of the Mummy ride giant animatronic dinosaurs to make it feel like you’re right next to T-Rexs, Velociraptors, and more. Jurassic Park ride is a water coaster so… you might get wet! The Studio Backlot Tour is the longest ride at the park; it takes a whole hour. On the tour you will see movie sets and experience movie magic in action. Definitely a must see. The last must see is the WaterWorld show, this one isn’t a ride…it’s a live action performance! There’s adventure, explosions, and you will get soaked! Definitely try to go to all of these because you will not want to miss them! Another thing you should know…the best time to go to Universal Studios is on a weekday. I went on a Wednesday and it wasn’t very busy because it was hot and a school day. continued on page 6

The longest I waited for a ride was 20 minutes, but I was on most rides in 10 minutes. Remember to always bring an umbrella, fans, and lots of water because you will be walking outside. Make sure to always go on the most popular rides first (Bowser’s Challenge, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride, etc.) because the lines will get super long super fast! I would recommend Universal Studios Hollywood to families with slightly older kids because some rides can be a little scary for younger kids. My younger sister was nervous to go on rides that were fast or had scary figures, such as the Jurassic Park or Return of the Mummy rides. Also, the WaterWorld show has loud sounds, like explosions and gun shots, so that might make more sensitive kids uncomfortable. Overall, however, I ended up liking Universal better than Legoland because I liked the rides more. I hope we get to go back soon!

The Most Meaningful Memorials Start with Ordinary Details BY CHRIS OWEN, HANSEN MORTUARIES & CEMETERY A handwritten recipe. A well-worn gardening hat. The song that always made Dad turn up the radio. When we think about what makes someone unforgettable, these are often the things that come to mind. And when it is time to honor that person’s life, those everyday details can become the most meaningful parts of a memorial. Families sometimes feel pressure to create a “perfect” service while navigating grief and unfamiliar decisions. A helpful place to begin is with a simple question: What would make someone walk into the room and say, “That is so her”? For someone who loved baking, it might mean sharing copies of a favorite recipe. For a devoted baseball fan, it could be inviting guests to wear their team’s colors. A gardener’s gloves displayed beside photographs might tell a story that a formal portrait alone cannot. These touches do not need to be elaborate or expensive. Their value comes from recognition: the smile, the memory, the story someone suddenly remembers and shares. If you are helping plan a remembrance, consider three questions: What did they love? Think about the music, food, hobbies, places, and traditions that filled their days. How did they make people feel? Perhaps they welcomed every new neighbor, offered quiet encouragement, or could always make a room laugh. Invite people to share a specific example. What would you like others to remember? A life includes much more than a list of accomplishments. Small acts of kindness and familiar routines often reveal the person most clearly. Personal details can fit comfortably within a traditional religious service, a celebration of life, or a small family gathering. They can complement cherished customs while helping everyone recognize the individual being honored. You can also start collecting these details long before you need
them. Ask about the story behind a favorite photograph. Write down the recipe everyone requests. Find out which songs matter and why. Those conversations can be a gift in themselves. At Hansen Mortuaries & Cemetery, we help families find ways to bring these memories into a meaningful tribute. Sometimes, the most useful starting point is simply, “Tell us about your loved one.” You do not have to arrive with a plan. A few stories, a favorite photograph, or even “I’m not sure where to begin” can open the conversation. Together, we can explore what feels right for your family and the life you want to remember.

Moon Valley’s Paula Cullison to Join Arizona Women’s Hall of Fame For longtime Moon Valley resident Paula Giangreco Cullison, community involvement has never been a spectator sport. A treasured Moon Valley Tattler contributor, she has shared her passion for the arts, travel, history and civic life. Now, her decades of volunteerism and advocacy will receive statewide recognition with her induction into the Arizona Women’s Hall of Fame’s 2026 class. “I am so very pleased to announce that along with four other women, I am being inducted into the AZ Women’s Hall of Fame. This is a HUGE honor which recognizes my volunteering for women’s rights, social justice, peace and environmental issues, as well as promoting the ARTS (OH MY!),” Cullison said. Cullison is one of three contemporary inductees this year, joining Alison Marshall Hughes of Tucson and Daisy M. Bell Jenkins of Oro Valley. The 2026 class also includes legacy inductees Dr. Laura Noble Banks-Reed of Tucson and May Hicks Curtis Hill of Flagstaff. Established in 1980, the Arizona Women’s Hall of Fame is the oldest organization in the state dedicated to honoring women’s achievements. It was founded by the Arizona Women’s Commission, the Tucson Women’s Commission and the Office of Governor Bruce Babbitt, making Arizona the fourth state in the nation to establish a women’s hall of fame. The first induction ceremony was held in Phoenix in 1981 and welcomed six women into the Hall. Today, the organization works to honor, celebrate and preserve the stories of exceptional women whose contributions have shaped Arizona’s development, culture and quality of life. Living leaders are recognized as contemporary inductees, while deceased trailblazers are honored as
legacy inductees. Nominations are accepted for both deceased and living women in the categories of Legacy and Contemporary, respectively. We encourage you to identify and nominate Arizona women who have made significant contributions in fields such as the arts, business, education, health, the humanities, law, public service, the sciences, and volunteerism. Nominations are encouraged that uncover the often untold, and unheralded, contributions everyday Arizona women have made in their communities and to the State’s rich culture. For Tattler readers, Cullison’s induction is more than a statewide honor. It is a celebration of a neighbor whose voice, curiosity and generous spirit have enriched both these pages and the Moon Valley community. Her work spanning women’s rights, social justice, peace, environmental advocacy and the arts reflects the civic commitment the Hall of Fame was created to preserve. The 2026 Induction Celebration is Monday, October 19, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West, 3830 N. Marshall Way. Emceed by Linda Williams, the event includes the induction ceremony, food and libations, and an opportunity to meet the honorees. A reception will follow, and free parking is available. Tickets and registration are available through Eventbrite. Additional information about the Hall of Fame and its inductees can be found at azwhf.org.

What’s So Spooky About Probate? BY COLTON POWELL, ASSOCIATE ATTORNEY, THE LAW OFFICE OF LIBBY BANKS The Arizona probate process is less haunted house and more paperwork maze, but there are still plenty of reasons to plan around it. You may not realize it, but for most people probate is not an “if” but a “when.” Probate has a bad reputation but often not for the reasons that first come to mind. It doesn’t mean the state automatically comes in and takes a percentage of your estate, but it can mean months (or years) of court processes, unwanted publicity, and higher administration costs. Let’s explore why it’s usually best to avoid probate. What is probate in Arizona? The probate process in Arizona is the court’s way of transferring title to assets after someone has died. The court will admit the Will to probate (if there is one) and appoint someone to manage the estate. You should beware the fact that having a Will does not avoid probate. A Will is simply an instruction manual for the probate court. Any assets titled solely in the name of the deceased without any beneficiary designations can get lost inside the maze of probate. What does probate involve? There are two primary types of probate cases: formal and informal. A formal probate involves a court hearing when the original Will cannot be located or when there is some dispute over the estate. An informal probate doesn’t typically require any hearings with a judge and can be used when there are no disagreements or contests. Either way, these court filings are a matter of public record, meaning anyone willing to pay the court’s minimal fee can dig into your family’s affairs. The first step is appointing a personal representative (or executor) to manage
Free Estate Planning Consultation
the estate. Then, notices must be sent to all the heirs and devisees (beneficiaries) of the estate. There is also a four-month creditor process to determine any outstanding debts of the deceased. Since these notice periods are required by law, even a simple uncontested, informal probate can take six months to a year to resolve. It is not uncommon for them to stretch to the two-year mark and beyond if there are extenuating circumstances. Why should probate be avoided? If the time, costs, and publicity aren’t enough to scare you away from probate, there is another horror that may seal the deal: a “living” probate. Just like when Dr. Frankenstein brought his monster to life, probate itself can spring to life through incapacity. Without an estate plan, if you are ever incapacitated and unable to manage your own affairs, the probate court can intervene with guardianship and conservatorship proceedings. This is the court’s way of appointing someone to make financial and medical decisions for you. The same house of horrors gets amplified because it happens during your lifetime and can extend for years, possibly even for the rest of your lifetime. All of these probate pitfalls can be avoided by creating an estate plan. Creating an estate plan centered around a revocable living trust allows you to decide who would step in these scenarios – not the court – and allows your affairs to be managed privately by trustees and agents of your choosing. You can save time, money, and dignity by planning for these scenarios before they happen, or the court will do it for you. Which would you prefer? When is probate not so spooky after all? Probate starts to look less frightening when contrasted with the horrors of a shortcut gone wrong. One such shortcut we see often is a beneficiary deed. While beneficiary deeds do avoid probate court, a beneficiary deed with multiple beneficiaries may land those people in a different court arguing over what to do with the property they just inherited. Another shortcut we see every day is the joint bank account with someone other than a spouse. These joint accounts can be subject to the lawsuits and divorces of both account holders up to the full value of the account, not just one person’s half. In these cases, probate’s tricks can pale by comparison, and creating an estate plan can be a real treat. How can I protect myself from probate? Creating an estate plan is the best way to protect yourself from the probate maze. We offer free initial consultations for estate planning to advise you on the best path forward. Happiness You Can Taste BY NI CH O L A S WAR NER , D C
DR. NICHOLAS WARNER, C.M.T., D.C. CERTIFIED MASSAGE THERAPIST CHIROPRACTOR
We’re all doing our best to find a little happiness in this often-troubling world, and now research provides evidence it may be as simple as making regular trips to the fruit and vegetable section of your favorite grocery store. According to the study of more than 12,000 adults, consuming approximately eight servings of fruit and veggies daily over a two-year period (compared to consuming almost no servings previously) improved subjects’ sense of well-being based on a “life satisfaction” scale. In fact, the benefits were noted even in subjects who consumed only two portions of fruit and vegetables a day compared to almost none. To put things in perspective, according to the study authors, the increase seen on the “life satisfaction” scale after consuming eight servings of fruit and vegetables for two years was “equal in size to the psychological gain of moving from unemployment to employment.” Are you getting enough fruit and vegetables in your daily diet? Beyond the profound physiological health benefits, regular consumption may benefit your emotional health and well-being as well. Now that’s happiness you can taste! Talk to your doctor to learn more.
On Friday, November 6 through Sunday, November 8, North Mountain Visitor Center will be hosting our second annual Festival in the Mountains. The weekend is shaping up to be fun for the whole family. Here is a taste of just some of what is happening: On Friday night our festivities kick off with Pat McMahon, the beloved entertainer best known for The Wallace and Ladmo Show, whose decades in television, radio, and community life have made him a true Arizona icon. Join us as Pat shares his story and the remarkable journey that shaped the Valley’s history and character. Throughout the weekend enjoy live music from local favorites: Glen Gardner, Eric Ramsey, George & Georgia, Mark Bishop Evans, and Nancy Elliot. You can also join guided hikes, check out geology demos, and keep the kids busy with desert-themed story times and crafts, plus bring your pup along to enter our Dog Costume Contest. Get a jump on your holiday shopping at our Market, where you’ll find unique jewelry, ceramics, children’s books, ornaments, plus photography and art. Coffee and baked goods will be available to keep you fueled while you browse. (A few vendor spots are still open for Sunday—see contact info below if you’re interested!) Rattlesnake Garage will also be on hand on Saturday morning, offering the chance to safely meet some of our desert creatures up close. In addition to a silent auction with fun baskets and valuable items up for bid, you can enter a drawing for a Dierks Bentley autographed guitar. The Festival in the Mountains is a community event and a fundraiser for the Save Our Mountains Foundation (SOMF), whose mission is to acquire and preserve land to assist in the expansion of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. SOMF supports the Mountains Preserve with education, conservation, and research and maintain operations at the North Mountain Visitor Center in collaboration with the City of Phoenix. The North Mountain Visitor Center is open daily and is located at 12950 th N 7 Street. See our website calendar for more event information, hours, and to learn more about the Visitor Center at https://northmountainvisitorcenter.org/ If you are a local artisan, crafter or vendor interested in participating in our Market, please email finance@saveourmountains.org.

By Frosty Kroening At the September 9, 2026 Black Mountain Community Alliance (BMCA), Henry Travino, Community Action Sergeant, reported that recently the Precinct Police from City Areas 21 through 23 conducted a sweep of homeless citizens resulting in 75 arrests for warrants for misdemeanors, probation and traffic violations, petty theft, felonies and other unlawful acts over a 10 hour period. The actions were planned not to hurt homeless people. They were aimed at lowering crime in our large precinct. The City has obtained ownership of a parcel of land in one wash that will be easier to keep clean due to City ownership. The group always wants to know about the latest police projects. BMCA members have requested the relocation of people who camp in the City’s washes and leave tons of garbage for others to clean up and render the washes unsafe. A few homeless people exercised the option to accept City services to help them find housing, jobs, medical care, and the ability to return to being productive citizens. Police and neighbors see the same people returning to the washes, having been released again and again. Chance East, Assistant City Prosecutor, explained that the Legislature has somewhat lenient procedures and penalties for prosecuting these kinds of illegal acts. The system is overloaded and under-funded. Residents are invited to lobby the Legislature about providing more resources. TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT: Sergeant Tyler Tatge, Steve Smith and Amelio Luna, Motor Officers, estimated that the Black Mountain Police Precinct patrols 7,000 miles of roads plus more in two other precincts. The City used to have 150 traffic officers compared to the current approximately 39. (Hint: There are two motorcycles waiting for new officers to be trained to use them.) They reported that traffic officers do not receive hazard pay and it is extra hard work in the heat of the summer. Sergeant Tatge stressed that the numbers of people hurt or killed are real people, real families impacted by continued on next page

Be Aware!
THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON
The Arizona Republic recently in the September 20, 2026 edition, ran several articles about deed fraud and real estate scams. Arizona has a history of real estate scams starting with James Addison Reavis in the late 19th century, including the Ned Warren saga in the 1960s and the Charles Keating, and the S & L, debacles in the 1980s, but here I’m expounding on deed fraud. Recently, we have seen several TV ads, exposing the perils of deed fraud, and the likelihood that you could lose your home without even knowing it. These ads offer solutions to this eventuality. In my humble opinion, I doubt that the odds of this happening on your primary residence, especially if you have a mortgage, are very high. But, I’m not an expert and I’m not offering advice about whether or not you should purchase this type of insurance. My advice is just be aware. The Republic points out that the more vulnerable properties are vacant, rental, and vacation homes, and recently inherited properties. Also, elderly homeowners are more at risk. Vacant commercial buildings are a target too. So how is this accomplished? The scammers search public property records to find a likely target. The next step is to falsify legal paperwork. They use a quitclaim or warranty deed, forging the true owner’s signature. They use bogus identification and illegal notarization. The fraudulent deed is then submitted to the county clerk or recorder’s office. If the paperwork appears legitimate, no further verification is usually done. The bogus transfer is entered into public
records, thus changing the registered ownership. The scammers waste no time in converting their newly acquired property into cash. Home equity loans or mortgages on the property quickly put cash in their pockets. They default on the payments which leaves the true owners in a real pickle. The discovery that they have been scammed may take the victims a long time. Foreclosure notices, delinquent property tax notices, or even by confronting strangers occupying the property, can be a real wake-up call. Setting the records straight can be a costly affair. Having to hire attorneys, file lawsuits, and going through complicated real estate litigation, really mounts up legal fees. Owners can protect themselves by signing up for free property monitoring alerts, routinely checking property records, securing credit reports, and purchasing title insurance. As a mortgage loan officer, this is not something I consider when originating a loan. I rely upon our underwriters, title companies, and even governmental agencies to determine the legitimacy of the transaction. However, this is a real threat. As an owner, just be aware and vigilant. If I can help you with a mortgage transaction, please give me a call. I promise no scams will sully our transaction.
BMCA... continued from prior page dangerous, careless driving. For instance, 70 miles per hour (mph) on Greenway Road in a 45 mph zone. 94 mph on City streets! If there are accidents, drivers can be charged with vehicular crimes. Traffic stop activity does result in fewer accidents. However, three of my dear neighbors have been involved in accidents where drivers ran red lights. In one case the driver and passenger tried to run away and were apprehended. Of course, e-bikes were discussed again. All Arizona jurisdictions are grappling with the legal issues the bikes and scooters present. If a bike can go 28 mph, the vehicle must be registered as a motorcycle, ridden by a person 16 years or older, licensed to drive a motorcycle, and the rider must carry insurance. Parents can receive citations for their children’s illegal actions like riding on sidewalks, doing wheelies in intersections, not stopping at stop lights and stop signs, causing
accidents (including deaths) and acting in a careless manner. And, especially for allowing under age use. Police use drones, helicopters, and patrol cars to identify unsafe and illegal e-bike riding. A friend who works in a local hospital sees way too many young children badly injured from not being able to understand the dangers of these heavy bikes and scooters. One attendee suggested that we create a fund to offer $1,000 to buy back each e-bike or scooter. Good News! Our police officers will be able to come to our local block watch meetings again! Maybe not as often as before. It is good to be able to talk personally with officers. Schools are back in session so officers are giving out speeding citations again. THE NEXT BMCA MEETING IS WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 14 AT 6:30 AT THE DEER VALLEY COMMUNITY CENTER. FOOD IS PROVIDED!

Rookie Mom: Instant Dopamine Boosts I think it’s really easy to look around and feel like the grass is always greener, especially when the world feels as chaotic as it does right now. So lately, I’ve been trying to notice the little things that give me an instant dopamine boost. Not the big, life-changing moments. Just the tiny, ordinary things that make me think, Oh yeah. My life is pretty cool. Here are a few of mine, in no particular order: 1. Listening to Danny Go!’s “The Millipede March” with Henry while he colors digitally on his tablet and I write. There’s something pretty great about the soundtrack of a happy 4-year-old playing quietly while I get some work done. 2. Surrounding myself with 10-something years’ worth of Halloween decorations. Getting the Halloween bins out is basically an annual dopamine delivery system. I will never apologize for having an unreasonable amount of spooky stuff. 3. Having the ability to give our kids opportunities to attend the school that feels right for them. Montessori has been such an amazing transition for both Brynn and Henry, and I’m incredibly grateful we have the choice to make that happen. 4. Watching Henry’s speech take off. His speech therapy has really ramped up thanks to our wonderful speech therapist, Amanda, at Each and Every Mind Therapy. Hearing new words and phrases come out of his mouth is one of those things that never gets old. 5. Glamping at the Grand Canyon for my younger sister’s 40th birthday. It was so nice to actually slow down and soak in the views instead of doing the usual “Wow, look at that!” before rushing off to the next thing. Sometimes you need to sit somewhere beautiful long enough for your brain to catch up.
BY BRIGHID CONSTABLE 6. Jamming out to Empire of the Sun last month. Sometimes you just need to turn the music up and let yourself have a maincharacter moment. 7. Catching up with my older sister. We both have very busy lives, so I love any opportunity to sit down, eat something delicious and actually talk. Our new favorite spot is Eggstacy in Norterra, which makes sister time even better. 8. Enjoying the (somewhat) cooler weather with my mom at Kierland. Shopping with my mom when Arizona finally remembers that fall exists? Yes, please. 9. Prioritizing dates with Adam. I love any excuse to get dressed up, try a new restaurant and remember that we are more than just the two people coordinating school drop-offs, groceries and bedtime. Jinya and Crust in NoPo (North Peoria) are currently in the rotation. 10. Pumping myself up for M3F in March by over-listening to their 2027 playlist. Disco Lines is currently my new favorite, and I have apparently decided that listening to the playlist approximately 353454533 times is the appropriate amount of preparation. 11. Digging in with my therapist at Embracing Change Therapy and learning about Internal Family Systems (IFS). It has been genuinely eye-opening to look at the different parts of myself with a little more curiosity and a lot less judgment. 12. Talking music with my older brother. We can spend an alarming amount of time discussing 311 while one of his sons argues that Cage the Elephant is the superior band. I appreciate that we have reached the stage of life where family debates can be about music instead of politics. continued on next page

rookie mom... continued from prior page 13. Having a Sequence board game party with the kids when they get home from school. Nothing fancy. Just crunchy Cheetos, pink lemonade, a board game, and everyone gathered around the table. These are the moments I know I’ll miss someday. 14. Reviewing grammar and sentence structure with Brynn. I love the old-school way she’s learning grammar. Diagramming sentences feels like solving a little puzzle, and, as a former English teacher, I am absolutely here for it. And now, in no particular order, here’s a list of the simple things I’m grateful for. Here are the things I find myself saying thank you for this about on an almost daily basis: 1. My kids. (Duh.) 2. My husband. (Double duh.) 3. My Subaru. 4. My home. 5. Where I live (and Arizona in general). 6. Clean water and the ability to choose what yummy food I want to eat. 7. A supportive family. 8. Having had the opportunity to stay home with my kids. 9. Good mental health. 10. Friends who just get me. 11. The simple opportunity to be here—to live my life, experience it, and exist. Maybe that’s the real dopamine boost: realizing that happiness doesn’t always arrive as some huge, exciting event. Sometimes it’s Danny Go! playing in the background. Sometimes it’s Halloween decorations. Sometimes it’s a Subaru, a board game, a good meal, a song you can’t stop playing, or a conversation with someone you love. Sometimes it’s just realizing, Hey. I’m pretty lucky. What are you thankful for that makes you pause, slow down, and appreciate where you are right now?

Greetings Moon Valley Community!
As promised last month, we’d like to introduce you to Shadow Rock Church’s Bridge Minister, Rev. David Hodgson. Please read to the end of this article because further below you will also find information about our new Youth Group endeavor. Because our long-time pastor retired earlier this year, Shadow Rock will welcome a settled pastor in November (more about that in next month’s Tattler). In the meantime, we welcome the Reverend Doctor David Hodgson who is serving as our Bridge Pastor. Bridge Pastors maintain worship, provide pastoral care, and ensure continuity. Rev. Hodgson is a retired Presbyterian minister with more a half century of experience as a church or interim pastor. He received his Master of Divinity degree of Princeton Theological Seminary and His Doctor of Ministry from San Francisco Theological Seminary. Welcome Rev. David! As promised above, we’d like to share that Shadow Rock Church has a budding youth program. Every week, Junior and Senior High youth meet on Sunday mornings from 9:00 to 10:00 AM in the Education Building. The content is based on Shadow Rock’s core values of inclusion, justice and spirituality. Plans include looking for service projects, visiting other faith communities, playing games and more. For questions about Shadow Rock Church’s youth programming, please email Liz Curry at secretary@shadowrockucc.org.

Avoiding Remodeling Mistakes BY TOM SERTICH, KIRK DEVELOPMENT COMPANY Remodeling can be a rewarding experience, but avoiding common mistakes is key to a successful project. First, remember that form follows function. Your design should improve how a space works, not just how it looks. Setting a budget that is too low can lead to compromises in materials or unfinished work. Always include a contingency for unexpected costs. Rushing a project can also result in mistakes and disappointing results, so take time to plan carefully. Choosing the right contractor is essential. Research their experience, credentials, licensing, insurance, and references before signing a contract. When ordering flooring, consider purchasing extra material for future repairs or replacements. Consulting qualified professionals, can help prevent costly mistakes and ensure building codes are followed. Set realistic expectations for your budget and timeline, and obtain all required permits before work begins. Careful planning can make your remodeling experience smoother and more enjoyable. If you are looking to remodel your home, call KIRK DEVELOPMENT for a free in home estimate at 602 944-3658.

The Skeletons Are Out. The Season Is Here. BY DREW HUTCHINSON, PRESIDENT, MOON VALLEY NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION Is it just me, or are the Halloween decorations going up earlier every year? I love it. There is nothing like turning onto your street and seeing a 15 foot skeleton in a neighbor’s front yard. It is the first sign that the weather is about to break, that the holidays are coming, and that we are heading into the reason we all live in Arizona, and more specifically, the reason we live in Moon Valley. This year we are bringing back the 13 Homes of Halloween for its third year. What started a few years ago as a handful of spirited displays has turned into something the whole neighborhood looks forward to. The creativity, the lights, the effort our neighbors put into it is mind blowing, and every year it gets better. If your house is ready to be seen, submit it at moonvalley.org/halloween-submission. Then get out there and drive the neighborhood. You will not be disappointed. Halloween is really just the opening act. Christmas is right behind it, and

we cannot wait to see what everyone comes up with. We do have a few changes coming to the Holiday Awards this year. Nothing major, but we will keep you posted in the coming weeks on moonvalley.org and through our email updates. October is also when the MVNA kicks off our annual membership and security drive. Your dues fund the things that make this neighborhood what it is: the Christmas Eve luminaries, the Holiday Awards, the garage sales, the July 4th fireworks, our entrance monuments, and the security patrols that help keep our families safe. If you have not renewed, please take two minutes and do it at moonvalley.org. And even if you are not renewing this year, please update your contact information on the site. With more than 1,600 homes in Moon Valley, keeping everyone informed is one of the best ways we stay safe and connected. Get ready. This is going to be a great holiday season. My First Time Volunteering BY EVANGELINE VAONA Two years ago, I volunteered at the BHHS Legacy Backpack Buddies event for the first time. It was also my first time volunteering with the National Charity League, and my first time volunteering ever in my life. Maybe readers can remember being fourteen years old; almost nothing was worse than waking up early to go spend five hours in a stadium walking around with my mother and little sister (AKA my mortal enemies of the time.) I didn’t want to be there at all. I could even hear the sweet siren call of my warm bed luring me back home. But, by the end of it, I was truly surprised by how different I felt. The philanthropy that we were volunteering for, BHHS Legacy Foundation in Arizona, has a smaller program called the Backpack Buddies that provides school supplies and clothes to low-income, foster, and or military families and has been around for two decades. Each year, the program provides back–to–school essentials and clothes to over fifteen thousand students - to put that number to scale, that’s almost the same number of students in the entirety of my high school district. Each July, volunteers would be assigned to work at different stations or guide students through getting their supplies and clothes in a large stadium or venue. Luckily, I was assigned to be a tour guide to go help the students. The first set of students I guided were two brothers. At first, it was difficult to handle two kids while walking around a loud crowded stadium. Additionally, they both mostly spoke Spanish, and my elementary level skills didn’t help me much as we walked through getting them shoes, pants, notebooks, and more. We all were feeling awkward; they were walking around getting clothes and school supplies with a complete stranger, and I didn’t want to even be there at first. But over the course of the two hours I spent with them, the three of us started to get along and have genuine fun. (Rock Paper Scissors is truly a universal game in the Americas.) Listening to them both talk more and more about the upcoming school year and their interests warmed my grinch-ly heart, and by the end of our time together I was sad to watch them go. My third student was a little girl, who was definitely more outgoing than the two boys I had finished helping. We breezed through the stations together, talking about much of the same subjects as the previous students. She reminded me a lot of a little girl around her age I knew, and like her this girl had a smile that could blind a person. So even though my feet ached and my throat parched, I walked forward with her bag in hand and a happy smile on my face. Like the two little boys, I was also sad to see her walk away back to her school group. Despite my initial apprehension and frustration with volunteering, I am glad that I was pushed to do it. BHHS Legacy Backpack Buddies was a wonderful introduction to volunteering with NCL. It was hard and long, but it was also rewarding and worth the effort put in by all the volunteers as a collective. It wasn’t a magical cure-all; I was still tired and still feeling moody afterwards. But I felt a softness in my heart that wasn’t there before I volunteered that morning. Have You Ever Had a Sound Bath? BY CATHERINE TENNEY Have you ever heard of a sound bath? If your first thought was, “do I need to bring a towel?” you’re not alone. A sound bath has nothing to do with getting wet. Instead, it’s an opportunity to slow down, get comfortable, close your eyes and simply listen. A typical sound bath takes place in a softly lit, peaceful space. You might hear Tibetan singing bowls, a gong, bamboo chimes, drums or gentle sounds that remind you of the ocean. The sounds wash over you, creating a calming atmosphere and inviting your mind and body to relax. And that’s really the beauty of it: you don’t have to do anything. You don’t need to know how to meditate. You don’t have to be flexible. There are no complicated poses to master, no special breathing techniques to remember and certainly no need to worry about whether you’re “doing it right.” You simply wear comfortable clothing and lie down, or sit, depending on the setting and let the sounds surround you. So, what is it about those beautiful bowls, gongs and chimes that can feel so relaxing? It isn’t only what you hear. Many of the instruments used in sound baths also create vibrations that you can feel in your body. The combination of sound, vibration, stillness and focused listening can encourage the nervous system to slow down. Your heart rate and breathing can slow, muscles release tension and the body moves into a calmer state. While your mind is listening to the gong, your body may be getting the message: “Okay, we can relax now.” And after a day filled with phones, traffic, errands, appointments and
approximately 47 things on the to-do list, this can feel pretty wonderful. Sound baths can happen just about anywhere a peaceful experience can be created. You might find one in a yoga studio, dance studio or private wellness space. Some are held outdoors, surrounded by the sounds of nature. Others take place in pools, where participants float gently on rafts while listening to the sounds. And for something a little more unusual, there are even sound baths held outdoors with horses. Yes, horses. You experience the calming presence and energy of these beautiful animals. Even they appreciate a good relaxation session. For many people, the experience is deeply relaxing. As the sounds continue, you may notice your breathing slow and your thoughts become quieter. Many people describe a sense of peace, well-being, feeling grounded or really relaxed. You might even drift into a very restful state or fall asleep. And that’s okay. So, is a sound bath for you? Maybe. If you’ve ever thought, “I just need an hour where nobody needs anything from me,” a sound bath might be worth exploring. It’s a chance to put down the phone, step away from the to-do list and give yourself permission to simply be. No experience is required. No special equipment is needed. And there’s no homework afterward. Just get comfortable, close your eyes, listen and notice what happens. You may discover that sometimes the best thing you can do for your well-being is nothing at all. your thoughts quiet

Diastasis Recti: Pumpkin Belly Mom Pooch BY JENA RITCHIE, NBC-HWC FOR MOON VALLEY CHIROPRACTIC Have you been living with a persistent postpartum “mom pooch,” belly bulge that feels like permanent pumpkin tummy. Or do you simply feel that your core isn’t as strong as it once was? You may be experiencing diastasis recti. The condition is more common than you think, and you don’t have to live with it. Diastasis recti is a condition in which the abdominal muscles separate along the midline, often occurring during or after pregnancy. Research following 300 first-time mothers found that 60% had diastasis recti six weeks after giving birth, 45.4% still had it at six months, and 32.6% continued to have it one year later. Long-term, around 22% to 36% of women may have persistent diastasis recti even 3 to 30 years after childbirth. While some women improve naturally, many continue to notice changes in their abdominal appearance, strength, stability, and movement long after pregnancy. At Moon Valley Chiropractic, we work with women who are frustrated by lingering postpartum changes who are
seeking better solutions. Rather than simply recommending more crunches, sit-ups, or strenuous workouts, our approach looks at how the spine, pelvis, posture, breathing, movement patterns, and core function work together. Our experience helping women address these concerns has shown us that every body is different and that an individualized treatment plan can make a meaningful difference. Research also indicates that structured abdominal exercise and conservative rehabilitation can help improve diastasis recti, although results vary from woman to woman. You don’t have to simply accept that your body will never feel the same again. If you’ve tried exercises on your own without getting the results you hoped for, it may be time to have your condition evaluated. Moon Valley Chiropractic can help you better understand what may be contributing to your abdominal changes and discuss evidence-based treatment options that may be appropriate for you. Take the first step toward a stronger core and more confident you. Schedule an evaluation at Moon Valley Chiropractic today by calling our office at 602-298-0292
