Being a Friend to myself during Covid: Wisdom of Uncertainty

BY FROST Y K ROENING These days are hard. Everyone feels a bit “owly” at times as we are facing microscopic beings ready to take us over at any moment. That word “owly” reminded me of the great horned owls that we heard last night. The big baby owl has a scratchy voice! The wings are huge in the night. There are plenty of rabbits to feed owls in Moon Valley. And quail, and roof rats, too. It is a place of plenty in the desert. An oasis.

Providing change, there was the blood red sun and then copper moon of August 2 as the smoke from fires near Palm Springs blanketed the sky. We can’t often look directly at the sun like that. The following orange moon was gorgeous!

So exciting! Our single baby white-winged dove fledged. While it was still in the nest on the ledge of our patio, I so enjoyed watching it flutter and look around the world. What goes through a baby bird’s mind as he or she views the world at 118 degrees Fahrenheit? That tiny bird knew how to breath rapidly to cool itself! Miracles show up in so many forms! The baby sat on the ground a couple more days and looked around and around, waiting to be fed by both Mom and Dad. It was safe in our fenced yard. I am witnessing renewal.

Weeds no longer sprout on dry ground...a plus in our yard! And the mountains around are looking pretty bare whereas in rainy times they can appear lush and green. Clouds head our way and then simply disappear into the ether. I love to see the edges of storms. Arrows of energy and moisture that we could surely use. I want to pull them onward to give us sweet showers.

Meanwhile, we seek authenticity and compassion for ourselves and others.

We try to relish “the wisdom of uncertainty.” It is helpful to say, “Wherever I am, there is light. I am light. I am peace.” A mantra to repeat over and over

Before the smoke came, the sky was very clear and stars twinkled so sweetly. And, both red and green asteroids streaked through the sky! What pleasure to be reminded of the hugeness and mystery of space. Red and green are colors of life, of thriving through adversity. We can do this. Our ancestors did it in 1918 and many other times. I’d like to see some poetry. Weaving Myself Awake by Gail Warner is a poetry book I will study. We are not alone. We have each other and our Creator. And we are smart enough to be extra careful.

Recognizing the challenging psychological, social, physical, emotional effects of a global health crisis

BY BY NICK CARUSO, LCSW One of the most fundamental concepts in social work practice is the Person in Environment Theory. It contends that a person is heavily influenced by their environment; therefore, their problems and issues can be largely understood by environmental influences. With the overwhelming amount of focus being on physical aspects of COVID-19, less attention has been given to the psychological, social, and emotional impact of the crisis on overall health.

A review of literature related to COVID-19 clearly indicates that the pandemic is associated with elevated fear, anxiety, distress, depression, insomnia, substance abuse and violence. Individuals with pre-existing psychiatric disorders are experiencing exacerbated conditions. A recent Census Bureau survey found that one in three Americans are currently reporting symptoms of depression or anxiety, which is more than three times the rate from a similar survey conducted in the first half of 2019. To further complicate matters, one of the most effective strategies to combat COVID-19 is through social distancing, which has resulting in people going long stretches of time without seeing friends or family. While necessary, this worsens the already widespread problem of loneliness, which can be deeply harmful to one’s mental health. A recent Arizona Republic article reported that the number of deaths involving domestic violence has more than doubled this year. Homicides involving domestic violence have increased by 140%.

So, how can you manage the psychological and emotional health impacts of COVID-19? Recognizing and validating these challenges posed by the pandemic, and then normalizing and destigmatizing the effects is an important first step. Talk about it. We are seeing high profile people speaking

to the psychological impact of the pandemic on their lives. In a recent Spotify podcast, former First Lady Michelle Obama spoke about her suffering from a “low-grade depression” caused by the pandemic, race relations and the current political strife. Society can benefit from social media campaigns that promote mental health and positive strategies to reducing stress. As one example, organizations such as The American Red Cross is offering Phycological First Aid Courses as a strategy to help people cope with the uncertainty associated with the global health crisis.

It is critical to continually explore strategies to stay connected and maintain relationships by telephone or video, to get enough sleep, to eat healthy foods and to exercise. Both locally and nationally we need to advocate for the availability of community support, especially for those living alone, and to encourage families and friends to check in with each other. Professionals, including health care providers, clergy, first responders, pharmacists, geriatric caregivers and school employees have an opportunity to identify individuals at risk for depression and suicide and direct them to proper evaluation and treatment.

As we recognize that there will be economic, political and psychological effects from the pandemic for years to come, we are collectively called to action for self-care and the caring for those in our community. Water is an inorganic, transparent, tasteless, odorless, and nearly colorless chemical substance, which is the main constituent of Earth’s hydrosphere and the fluids of all known living organisms. It is vital for all known forms of life, even though it provides no calories or organic nutrients. Wikipedia Sounds pretty simple, Water is the foundation of life for all living creatures, and this year I have felt the absence of this healing and rejuvenating substance in my life. Now what am I trying to say? Well each year, I usually spend many weekends at the beach, mostly in Mexico, just putting my feet in the water, walking up and down the sandy seaside, dipping into the pools at happy hour and waking up to the sound of the waves crashing against the rocky land. The sound and smell of this substance has a way of healing many ailments from inflammation to nervous systems dysfunction and skin conditions.

In ancient times, baths and hydrotherapy were not only sacred but used in natural health, and today are very much a part of confirmed recuperative and internal healing. Hot water and cold water have their amazing impact on the entire body.

I miss the water and realized it after spending a few days at the Parker Strip, braving the very high temperatures of over 117, while just plopping my chair right in the river, waves splashing my face, while the cool current of the Colorado River cleared the toxins and cleansed my skin and they say also “ boosts immunity and increased depression-zapping endorphins such as dopamine.”

Well, I must tell you this morning as I sip my coffee and look in the mirror, I find that the old “me” sun-kissed nose, bright shining skin and a new state of mind were looking right back at me.

Today I leave for a 8 day Colorado Rafting River trip, I will be so very excited to share this amazing adventure with you next month.

I have missed the water…………

Thrift Boutique Benefitting Individuals Living with Disabilities Reopens Flerish Design + Retail, a boutique, philanthropic thrift store located at 12625 N. Cave Creek Rd. in Phoenix, celebrated a grand re-opening on Sept.

1 after a three-month closure due to COVID-19. The store is now open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Proceeds from each sale support Civitan Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities through jobs, programs, services and activities.

During the store’s hiatus, members from Civitan Foundation have helped curate and organize unique pieces to sell and have given the store a makeover with guidance from enthusiastic new management. “There is something for everyone here at Flerish,” said Lani Griffin, store manager. “Bargainers and treasure hunters are sure to find something special, whether it be clothes, jewelry, furniture, fine dinnerware, china or more – we really have it all, and the members are so excited to finally reopen.”

The philanthropic shop features an even mixture of new retail items and high-quality, donated resale. The store has undergone third-party cleaning and strictly adheres to CDC disinfecting guidelines. Masks are required while shopping.

Flerish Design + Retail supports a minimum of 12 jobs for the differently abled every day. The number of jobs created will increase when the second Flerish location opens at Civitan’s Midtown Marketplace, which is estimated to be in the first quarter of 2021. At that time, the Cave Creek location may become a donation, new retail storage, and sorting facility.

WESD: Welcome Back

BY DR . PAUL S TANTON, SUPERINTENDENT, WESD Welcome back to the 2020-2021 school year. I am Paul Stanton the proud Superintendent of the Washington Elementary School District (WESD). We know this school year looks and feels different from any other and I thank you for your patience and support as we experience this new journey together.

We launched this school year with distance learning in virtual Google classrooms. Our teachers are connecting with your child in real time every day. In addition to math and reading, your students have the opportunity to participate in art, music and physical education under the direction of our WESD teachers in real time. Students receive social and emotional care from the district’s social workers, behavior support advocates and psychologists, all in real time.

We will remain online through Labor Day. District leadership is reviewing the health benchmarks from the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Arizona Department of Education, as well as information from Maricopa County Health Services, to determine a return to in-person instruction. WESD will continue to offer online instruction the entire school year for families who prefer virtual learning.

Embracing Our New Virtual Learning Our dedicated teachers, administrators and support staff have been working diligently to provide live virtual instruction for all students in the WESD. We intentionally placed students in small groups in order to give your child the attention they would receive through face-to-face instruction in the classroom. Our teachers also created additional lessons and activities to extend what students are learning during their live instruction. There are also opportunities in the schedule for your students to spend time independently on their assignments. We know there will be glitches along the way and that’s ok. Remember, what is special about the WESD is our WESD Family of teachers, social workers and support

staff connecting with your children in real time every day.

Rookie Mom: I Am My Own Darn Staggering Hero Since this is a column for clueless parents, here’s my current parental/ marital a-ha moment: My 3-year-old daughter is smarter than I will ever be and my husband can handle way more things, which I admittedly, have a tendency to control.

Letting go makes it better, but harder, as marriage and parenting through these times (and in general) seem longer than waiting in construction traffic on the 101 and 7th Street.

If you’re also with me, you’re sick of reading depressing stories--or fake stories--wondering which side is up and which is down (on social media or on any news outlet in relation to current news or just people in general).

I’ve taken a leave of absence from teaching to make sure I’m the best teacher for my students, but mostly myself. However, it’s a process coming back, or as Michelle Obama aptly points out: In “Becoming” me.

“First of all: I am tired. I am true of heart! And Also: You are tired. You are true of heart!”

The Post-Brynn-In-School Day-to-Day + Brynn’s social skills have flourished since making the decision to put her back into preschool, skills she so obviously lacked during at-home quarantine.

(It’s like she’s aged 829829 years within the span of 3 weeks at school.) + I’ve learned to recognize how my behaviors have affected the growth in her learning… Which is an awesome and yet terrible thing to realize as a parent (and teacher) + How my husband patiently, patiently, patiently puts up with my quirks that sabotage our relationship sometimes. He carries the weight of so many people, places, and things, and pulls it off with such grace. We are in this twoway street together, which I often make one.

+ I’m re-reading The Harry Potter series and understanding it from my 35-year-old perspective that my 16-25-year-old self once loved. My stressed brain has trouble chewing it sometimes, so focus is primary. + Dancing to Sofi Tukker at 10 a.m.--whether I’m on my at-home elliptical or swimming in the pool. This is teaching me how the heck to get online and access the technology on my TV or whatever. It’s a love-hate learning process to build my new routine. + Researching candidates representing Arizona in our area for the upcoming election. Sometimes it doesn’t seem so easy with all the issues we face today. + Getting lost driving around Moon Valley, North Phoenix, and Cave Creek in my newish pre-owned Subaru Ascent. Listening to podcasts, SXM, and stopping by local shops that fit whatever craving… Yet NOT trying to spend money! + Trying to thumb through my judgements-good or bad--wondering if I’m making the right choice in what I purchase, what I say, what I do. And that can be a lot to carry sometimes. + Giving myself grace and patience to practice the void of my ego.

I hope that you have a cool September and that the monsoons decide to make rain come our way by then.

Kids of all Ages Soak Up Fun & Learning at Hubbard Family Swim School

BY LIL A BALTMAN Due to COVID-19, all the swim instructors at the Hubbard Family Swim School are now required to wear large, plastic face shields while teaching children in the swimming pools. However, even with face shields being worn, children can still see the instructors’ big smiles and friendly faces behind the see-through plastic shields. There may be several new safety measures being used, but parents are definitely excited to sign their babies and children up for swim lessons again and Hubbard is thrilled to be open and back in the swim of things.

Founded in 1998 by co-owners Bob and Kathy Hubbard - world-renowned experts and educators in the field of infant swimming - Hubbard Family Swim School offers lessons to children 8 weeks to 12 years of age. The Hubbard’s basic philosophy is this: Children everywhere must learn how to swim. Learning to swim should not be a choice.

Hubbard’s new safety measures include: Face coverings are required for everyone over the age of 6 (except when in the water).

Families are asked to limit their swim entourage to one adult per family.

Enter the building no more than 10 minutes before your scheduled lesson.

Upon arrival, use the available hand sanitizer.

Practice social distancing and keep children close when they are not in a lesson.

Families are strongly encouraged to come and leave in swim gear to reduce the number of people in the changing area.

To reduce family crossover, makeups are not being offered at this time.

Cost for Swim Lessons: Classes are available in “Baby and Me” programs for ages 2 months to 3 years old and there are group and semi-private classes for children 2 years and older.

There are also more advanced swim classes for ages 6 and up. Classes for babies 6 months and up with their parents are called “Little Snappers” and start at $22.50 for a 30-minute lesson. The “Clownfish” classes for ages 24 to 35 months with two students per class are $32 for a 30-minute lesson. There are also “Goldfish” classes for ages 3 and up with four students per class. Cost is $22.50 per lesson.

The “Jellyfish,” “Octopus,” and “Lobster” classes are all available for older, more experienced children and the cost is also $22.50 per lesson.

The majority of children enroll in one, 30-minute lesson per week. In 2019, the American Academy of Pediatrics formally stated that they now recommend that children as young as 1 year old get enrolled in formal swim lessons.

There are also FREE “Baby Splash” classes for babies 8 weeks old to 5 months of age available at Hubbard. Parent participation in the water is required. These 30-minute water acclimation classes give parents or caregivers a chance to learn excellent tips on how to enjoy tub time at home with baby and also learn how to prepare baby for swim lessons. The baby splash classes are free but there is a $25 registration fee.

“Our popular Baby Splash classes give parents an excellent way to spend quality time with their babies in the water,” says Kathy Hubbard. “Their swim class together is wonderful bonding time and then after the class, the babies always enjoy a nice, long nap.”

There are three Hubbard Family Swim School locations around the Valley - Phoenix, Peoria, Mesa - and a fourth swim school will open in Goodyear in October. The temperature of the heated indoor pools at each location remains at a very comfortable 90 degrees year-round. boys team charity North Valley Annual Service Initiative: Lending a Hand to the Elderly

BY C ADE HOIBY AND SAMUEL CL ARK We all know that this has been a very difficult time for so many people here in Phoenix, and of course around the world. The pandemic has especially taken a toll on elderly men and women. Each year, boys team charity Inc. (btc) chooses a nation-wide philanthropy initiative and this year the group has decided to Lend a Hand to the Elderly.

Due to health and safety restrictions, btc North Valley had to be creative in pivoting their typical hands-on participation with Valley philanthropies.

They have partnered with Banner Olive Branch Senior Center in Sun City, Ariz., where many community members have limited access to basic household products, and minimal income sources to obtain the much-needed items. Since 1988, the senior center has offered programs and services which include a food pantry, daily hot meals, food boxes, and food delivery to those in need.

As a solution, btc North Valley organized a paper product drive and collected paper towels, toilet paper and tissues to donate. “To Lend a Hand to the Elderly, our league’s families collected, sorted and delivered the items to the center, but we didn’t want to just stop there,” said Hoiby. “To show our elderly neighbors how much we care, we also formed a letter writing campaign. Btc North Valley collected over 500 letters of well-wishes and encouragement that were added to the senior center’s food boxes. Some of the boys included pictures of their pets, uplifting messages, drawings, and poems.”

Residents at Banner Olive Branch Senior Center were so thankful to get a boost in their supplies during this challenging time that several recipients returned thank you letters, and a few even sent home-made face masks to the boys to express their gratitude. btc is a volunteer service organization dedicated to developing an altruistic spirit in young men through active participation in philanthropic projects in their communities. How do we put things in the Trust? We title your home, bank account, stock brokerage account and other assets in your name as trustee rather than in your individual name as owner. For instance, for the home of a husband and wife (we’ll call them John and Ann Smith), we prepare, sign and record a deed to the house. The deed says that John Smith and Ann Smith, husband and wife, convey their house to John Smith and Ann Smith, Trustees of the John and Ann Smith Trust. You do the same thing with your bank account, brokerage account and other assets.

With the Trust, while you are alive and competent, you control your financial affairs much the same as you do without a trust. You manage your assets, receive the income, pay bills, buy and sell property, and so on. You have full control.

My clients notice very little difference in how they handle their finances once they have the Trust in place and their assets titled in their names as trustees. However, the person whom you have asked to be your successor trustee will certainly notice a difference in how much smoother it is to step in and take

care of your financial affairs at incapacity or death.

How the Trust Works for You if You are Incapacitated If you are unable to make decisions for yourself or manage your financial affairs, the Revocable Living Trust provides a quick way for your designated successor trustee to step into your shoes to take care of your financial affairs, without a court appointing them and without court intervention or constant oversight and scrutiny. All of your business stays private. If you recover, you resume your role as trustee of your trust.

Your Trust Allows for Smooth Administration After Your Death At your death, that trustee steps in as “executor” of your estate to oversee the assets in your trust, wrap up your financial affairs and distribute your assets as you have directed. Your trustee is held to a high fiduciary standard in handling your estate, and you leave detailed directions for how your affairs are to be handled. All of the administration of the trust happens without expensive court proceedings. It provides for a smooth transition of assets from you, to your successor trustee, and ultimately to your beneficiaries.

“Arizona high school students continue to be separated from their primary social groups as a result of school districts beginning the fall semester online and delaying normal oncampus school activities. During these challenging times, the PSA messages will place the Teen Lifeline mission on the forefront and remind teens in crisis that they are not alone,” said Don Kile, president of NQBC. “The PSAs will be channeled through athlete social media accounts and other various outlets throughout September.”

September is Teen Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. The collaborative PSA social media campaign to support the mission of Teen Lifeline utilizes 12 Arizona high school football players from eight Valley high schools to share the peer-to-peer message that ‘there is help and there is hope.’ Teen Lifeline contact information is present on the back of more than 213,000 student IDs at 135 high schools across the state.

So, we all are spending a LOT more time at home during Covid, and it’s funny what turns up once you start cleaning….. My mother, who lives on Gleneagles, found a flyer she wanted to share with me today... For the Arizona Women’s Partnership, these flowers come as supporters and volunteers. Choosing colors for your outdoor mural is one of the fun parts of designing your backyard paradise. One thing to keep in mind when planning your palate is how resilient colors are under the Phoenix sun. Acrylic paint is some of the most durable, long-lasting outdoor paint but even acrylic has its limits. As a muralist or DIY homeowner there are several steps you can take to make sure your outdoor mural goes the distance.

Certain colors are more durable in outdoor spaces where there is a lot of exposure to UV light. Keep in mind that some yellows, reds, and fuchsias are translucent and not only require multiple coats to achieve saturation, but they also fade long before their heartier hued neighbors like blacks, blues, and greens. Specialty colors, like neon pigments, which are well known their brightness, are rated “very poor” when it comes to durability. Most artist grade paints have a rating system for the opacity and lightfastness of their various pigments. There is a lot of variation within the colors. For example, you can find reds on both ends of the rating system in both translucent and not durable, and opaque and durable pigments. Keep these rating in mind when it comes to choosing a color palate consistent with your durability goals.

To stem fading over time, you should finish your mural with artist-quality varnishes that offer additional protection for sun exposure. Keeping it varnished over time will certainly extend the life of a mural. Be sure to use a matte or satin varnish for an even finish. High gloss varnish can look uneven and appear shiny.

So whether it’s Pantone’s Classic Blue color of the year, or a golden yellow that makes you smile, bring some color to your outdoor space.

Coping with the Pandemic: Who Needs Our Help the Most?

The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting just about everyone, regardless of whether you’ve actually been infected or suffered any symptoms. Mental and emotional health is taking a huge hit over time, between work stoppages, social restrictions, and general fear and uncertainty. But is one particular age demographic suffering more than another? You’ll be surprised to know the answer.

According to new research, older adults are faring than any other adult age group in terms of emotional coping. You might not expect this to be the case, since older adults have generally been the most shuttered due to their high risk of complications from COVID-19. But adults ages 60 and older report better emotional health than younger adults (18-39) and middle-aged adults (40-59).

In their study, published in the Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences, researchers suggest young and middle-aged adults may suffer more from pandemic restrictions because they have challenges many older adults no longer have, such as working remotely, caring for / homeschooling children, maintaining financial stability for the family, etc. Interpersonal conflicts and other non-pandemic stressors are also more prevalent in younger / middle-aged versus older adults.

Older adults still suffer from isolation, loneliness, and of course, fear of contracting the virus, but also may be more equipped to handle it due to their coping skills, experience and wisdom. They are also the first group people worry about, which may lead to a greater degree of attention from and interaction by friends and family members.

So, who needs our help the most? It may be the youngest adults, not only because they appear to be suffering the most, but also because they may benefit the most. According to the study, younger adults rely heavily on social interactions, which accounts for their emotional struggles during the pandemic. However, this also suggests that finding ways to ensure younger adults can maintain those social interactions – not just via social media and online platforms, but also (and perhaps more importantly) by in-person events that conform to appropriate public health guidelines – is critical.

Whatever your age, if you’re having difficulty coping emotionally with the pandemic, it will eventually affect your physical health as well. That’s why both are important aspects of whole-body wellness. Ask your doctor about the best strategies to stay healthy and well during these challenging times.

Things to know when remodeling

BY TOM SER TICH, K IRK DE V ELOPMENT If you have decided to finally remodel the kitchen, bathroom or add that new room, there are a few things you need to know. Don’t go into the process without doing your homework. Find a company that is licensed, bonded and insured. Make sure they specialize in the area you need. Check them out through the registrar of contractors and take a look at their website. Schedule a first visit and make sure you are compatible. Most companies will offer you a meeting and a free estimate. Remember, if you are not comfortable with them don’t do business.

You need to hire a company that will listen to you and use your ideas. Your contractor should welcome your opinion. After all, you will be living there not the contractor.

Don’t be pushed into making rash decisions. When you are done with your remodel you want to say “Wow, this is what I wanted”. You should never finish the process and wish you had made different decisions. The professional company you hire should guide you down the correct path.

It is a good idea to hire a contractor that is certified by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry or the National Home Builder Remodelers Council. Certified Professionals represent individuals who have met comprehensive experience, education and testing criteria. Kirk Development is certified by both industry associations.

Choose Your Words Carefully M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C BY D EB B I E ER BS TO E SSER I’m not so good at “choosing my words carefully.” I’m a Cut to the Chase, Get to the Point, Tell it Like It Is kind of person. Choosing words carefully takes time and I’m big on shortcuts. If you’re being hmmm shall we say, ‘difficult or unreasonable’ I’m liable to tell you so with little or no regrets! Life is too short.

My dear friend from waaaaay back made this suggestion recently and I shook my head saying, “…but you know me!” It takes me hours, days, to come up with something clever or politically correct and by then the moment or incident is gone. I’ve actually improved quite a lot, if you call not being true to yourself improvement. She said, “True beauty reveals itself in our imperfections.”

If you have a friend who loves you despite your flaws, doesn’t always ‘like’ you, but puts up with you and loves you anyway, hang on!

There’s magic is that friendship. **I didn’t think I’d be able to come up with a MVM column for September. The virtual Back to School is just as bad, if not worse than it was in March. The learning/ teaching platform changed and I’ve had to relearn everything all over again. To say that I’m stressed would be an understatement. Just know that teachers want to be back in their classrooms, loving on, learning from and teaching our sweet and sometimes obnoxious kiddos. I can’t wait to get a hug from them and hear ‘I love you’ echoing down the breezeway.

A Word to Millennials THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON If you are one of the millions who have lost their job in this global health crisis, my heart goes out to you. You are in “survival” mode. Let’s just pray that a vaccine is found quickly, and thing begin to normalize.

There are, however, plenty of us who are still working, albeit, in altered formats. Working from home has its merits. You don’t have to get dressed to be to work on time, no lunches out, no Starbucks on the way in. Probably not going out to dinner and bars. Vehicle expenses are down. The auto insurance companies are sending out rebate checks and lowering premiums. All in all, the opportunity to cut expenses and to enhance the old savings account is huge.

Thus, my segue into the gist of this piece. There is actually a homebuying boom starting, fueled by low interest rates, increased savings, and lack of other things to do. The ability to preview homes on line from the convenience of the couch. The ability to communicate face to face with Realtors and lenders via Zoom, et al. The ability to sign documents electronically via DocuSign. The ability to transfer funds from a cell phone. All these technological innovations really simplify the process and are right up the alley of the millennial generation.

A recent article in Scotsman Guide (a mortgage industry trade publication) cited Joe Tyrrell, chief operating officer at Ellie Mae. “Millennials are emerging as a dominant force relative to driving the purchase market forward in the next few years.” He went on to say, “Our data indicates that while we’re currently seeing an upturn in millennial purchase activity, the true boom is just starting.

We expect that their entry into the market, as they reach prime homebuying age, will fuel purchase transactions in 2021, 2022 and 2023.”

In fact, 56% of all purchase loans in June were made by millennials, which is more than any other age group. What’s more, census data shows that over 4 million millennials will reach the key buying age of 29-30 for the next several years.

This is a prime opportunity for millennials (and everyone else), due to rates below 4%, extra savings, and time to survey the market (on line). As a comparison, I bought my first home at 27 and paid an interest rate about 7.5%.

Down payments shouldn’t be a problem. Fannie and Freddie have loans for “first-time homebuyers” with as little as 3% down.

Millennials, now is the time to make a move into real estate. Get with a trusted mortgage loan officer and get pre-qualified. I prefer working with a real live Realtor, but you can do lots of leg work on line. You may never have an opportunity like this again.

Moon Valley Neighborhoods: Cluster Homes

BY JULIE PEK The Valle de Luna sign sits at the entrance to the popular Moon Valley Cluster Homes, at Tam O’Shanter and 3rd Avenue. This community of 90 homes is one big cul-de-sac, adjacent to Moon Valley Country Club and right on the golf course. The flat-roofed homes were built in the mid 1970’s with 2 basic floor plans: single story detached homes and connected patio homes, ranging from 1,800 to 2,400 square feet.

Homeowners are part of the Moon Valley Golf Lots and Townhome Association and their membership supports their community pool and tennis / pickle ball courts. Back in pre-COVID 19 days, neighbors would gather at poolside for coffee on Saturday mornings to catch up with each other.

Mary and her husband Harry moved into the neighborhood in 2004 after living in several other Moon Valley communities over the years. They were downsizing and the cluster home they purchased was perfect for them. “We step out our backyard and walk over to the country club to play golf, and socialize with our friends,” Mary said. “We can’t think of another place we’d rather live.” Friends have asked Mary to keep them in mind if a cluster home comes up for sale. That list of names is over 100 long!

“This community is sort of a microcosm of Moon Valley,” said Craig, who has lived here with his family since 2008. “The architecture is so different and so charming.”

Recently, both of Craig’s sons bought cluster homes and are making their own renovations.

Over the past 10 years, the homes have undergone changes to their original 1970’s look. This trend depicts a new energy and progressive vibe that exists in the community. My mantra has been get to know your Community Action Officer. Do you know yours? If not, why not!!! They are men and women dedicated to protecting us. Our homes, cars, and personal well being. Sure there are a few rotten apples in the bunch but not our CAOs. Phoenix is one of the cities that has embraced the Community Action Officers program I am sure you have seen the police car that drives down our streets.

Do you know that officer(s)? Most people don’t but we do feel a sense of safety seeing them. If you talk to friends/relatives around the country you will find out how unique this program is. So, let’s pull together and strengthen what we have.

In 1993 the Phoenix voters approved Proposition 301. It enacted into law the Neighborhood Protection Ordinance Prop 301 allocating revenue to expand the Block Watch program. The Block Watch Grants provides monies for appropriate stuff. We have available to us, among other things, lanyard for pool safety, speed signs to put on your garbage cans, reflective vests for walkers, and other possible items for GAIN Day events. There are Block Watch signs that you can get to put in your house windows.

Regarding GAIN Day, It is usually the second or third Saturday of October. The purpose is for you to get to know your neighbors and welcome new people on your block. We usually do a pot luck on our driveway with our neighbors on our block. If you register your event, your community officer or someone from the City will stop by and chat. One year we had twenty-one neighbors and seven police officers and city officials stop by ! How kool is that.

Seems everyone is so busy these days. Isn’t it nice to take a some time and break bread with neighbors. A great investment in your neighborhood.

After these crazy times have passed I am sure Black Mountain (our precinct) will resume its monthly Wednesday get together. This event is held at the Deer Valley Senior Center. It draws about 60 people. Not only do you meet our Community Action Officer, Tony Cuciti, but other city officials as well.

Each meeting has a different and excellent speaker. Last year we learned that there were about 1000 cases involving children that the police had to deal with. There is a a special unit that uses service dogs. The dogs spend two years in training to be certified and are often bred especially for this purpose. Recently we met their DOG Leona, which helps in dealing with children on domestic Violence calls. Having taken in a service dog such as Leona, I can truly appreciate the time, effort and expense in training these very special dogs. We are fostering one from Soldiers Best Friend and what a privilege to experience this incredible animal. I have spoken about Soldiers Best Friend before, but if you missed that: they are a local non profit, providing service dogs for veterans. The cost to train the dogs with the veteran is about $2500 yet the veteran does not incur any cost. Our way of thanking the veteran for their service. Airport Update & Prepare for Upcoming Elections

It’s the Hottest Phoenix summer on record; July the hottest month ever and no real summer monsoon rain. Ugh! It’s been a hard summer – most fun things closed due to the pandemic, many restaurants with limited service, vacation travel challenging, and all the negative news. Please find ways to stay connected with family and friends; and find time for a few days away! It’s safe to hike and walk – just get out early before it gets too hot, pre-hydrate and bring water. Don’t forget about water for pets also.

I’m a member of the Phoenix Aviation Advisory Board which oversees Sky Harbor, Deer Valley and Goodyear airports. At a recent monthly board meeting, airport staff briefed on the actions taken to adapt the airports to the new environment. Many changes are in place to help guide folks for social distancing, enforce mask wearing, and keeping common areas clean on a more regular basis. New innovations are being used from UV light onto escalator rails to Honeywell’s new UV robot being evaluated by Jet Blue that can effectively and economically cleanse an aircraft cabin quickly. Aircraft and the airport have never been cleaner.

There are several large capital improvement projects that are still progressing: a new light rail is extending from the terminals to the car rental center (removes rental buses and projected to remove thousands of cars in the airport); removal of Terminal 2 progressing as airlines have been moved to the new north wing of Terminal 3, and a new 130,000 square-foot concourse of Termi-

nal 4 that will bring new services and new gates for Southwest Airlines. The Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport continues to be a key piece of our infrastructure that makes Phoenix residents proud.

The political season is upon us and both parties have now completed their national conventions. I saw an interview asking why certain topics were not discussed at one or the other convention, and what I heard was very relevant.

Conventions are not reality – they are political events. It’s upon all of us to measure the parties and candidates positions to the real issues that affect us all.

It’s not too early to do some research beyond cable news, by checking the facts.

You can locate fact check options on-line like www.FactCheck.Org or www.

Politifact.com. For incumbents, let’s measure them on accomplishments – who has done positive things for our community. For challengers, review if they have the background and experiences to be successful. Democracy works best when people are properly informed and vote!

Getting your Hands Dirty for the Good of Others

BY CHRISTINE PAT TON Princeton researchers have found “the level of emotional well-being, or happiness, reported while gardening was similar to what people reported while biking, walking, or dining out,” according to a study published in the Journal of Landscape and Urban Planning (2020). As the summer months drone on in Arizona, I find myself searching for things to do that will bring meaning and satisfaction to me. Give me an outlet to channel my energy or feelings of frustration and allow me to participate in an activity with intention. Not just with the intention of helping others but also to soothe myself during this very uncertain time. Luckily, as a member of the National Charity League, Inc. Moon Valley Chapter, I can find this by volunteering at The Giving Garden.

The Giving Garden’s mission is to “bring together the gifts of our community to inspire hearts, plant seeds, and sustain hope by growing, feeding, educating and nourishing the body and soul . . . using our hands and our hearts to serve others.” This is exactly what this organization does. There is a literal and metaphorical nourishing for the volunteers and the recipients of this service. Kasia Smigielski (NCL Class of 2024) says, “I enjoy working at the Giving Garden because I can work outside and get my hands dirty. It is an important service because we’re helping people out all over the valley in need of healthy foods.” After being introduced to this organization through the Moon Valley NCL’s partnership, Kasia took her service a step further and selected the Giving Garden as a beneficiary of an 8th grade philanthropy assignment called the Arrupe Project. Through this project, Kasia was able to raise $1000 for the Giving Garden. She was able to purchase necessary supplies for the volunteers who show up each Saturday morning to help pull weeds, harvest fruits vegetables, and fill the compost barrels.

Christy Smigielski, Kasia’s mom, says “I enjoy working in the Giving Garden as it appeals to my outdoor nature as well as giving me a chance to work with my hands. I really enjoy the bond that it has created between Kasia and I and I cherish our time together. The philanthropy has been very instrumental in providing food and support to many families in need, which makes our efforts even more worthwhile. It has become one of our favorite philanthropies.” All the elements of this philanthropy have touched me in positive ways as well. The friendly faces and regular volunteers who greet NCL members with such warmth. Suppling us with treats and some of the fruits and vegetables that we labor to harvest. Tips for gardening or creating mulch bins at home. Sharing stories of how local foster homes or food kitchens benefit from the harvest. The camaraderie that is shared among volunteers and between my daughter and I are all so satisfying. It is lovely to be outdoors, early in the morning, feeling the sunshine on my back and the cool dirt between my fingers. Although the service is meant to provide nourishment to others, during my time at the Giving Garden I have been able to find some peace and nourishment of my own. “…. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul.” Alfred Austin NCL, Inc. is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong mother-daughter relationships through community service, leadership development, and cultural experiences.
