Local Dignitaries, Gymnastics Fans Celebrate Gold Medalist Jade Carey at Arizona Sunrays B Y L I L A B A LT M A N Dozens of excited, cheering teammates waving tiny American flags finally got their chance to celebrate and pose for a photo with Phoenix Olympic gold medalist, Jade Carey, at the Arizona Sunrays Gymnastics & Dance Center on Aug. 17. Sunrays hosted a private celebration for Carey to honor her extraordinary performance in the Tokyo Olympics.

Several local dignitaries attended to offer their personal congratulations: Phoenix Mayor, Kate Gallego, Tempe Vice Mayor, Randy Keating, Former Arizona State Senator, Steve Smith, and Congressman Greg Stanton.

“Flerishing” with jobs at Flerish Thrift + Gift

Ava wakes up excited to go to work and comes home proud of a job that lets her contribute to her community. Ava, an adult with special needs, is employed by Flerish Thrift & Gift, where she works with a dedicated job coach to develop the skills necessary to one day work independently in the community. Recently Ava received a raise for her progress towards her goals and her reaction and joy was priceless. Ava’s story gives you a glimpse into the impact that Flerish makes in the lives of their employees with intellectual and developmental disabilities as they work to achieve their career goals and take steps towards more independence!

Flerish Thrift and Gift currently employs 19 individuals with special needs who work very hard to not only increase their work skills and pursue their employment goals, but to also transform the donations Flerish receives into beautiful pieces for shoppers to enjoy. Thunderbird High School Cadets Set Sail Over Summer

During their summer break, one hundred Thunderbird High School cadets had the opportunity to participate in NJROTC Sail Academy at Fiddler’s Cove in Coronado, California. Their four-day stay was highlighted by camping on the beach, sailing in 16 and 25-foot sailboats, knot tying, sailing academic team competitions, a teambuilding paddle race in Zodiac boats, and a sailing race in the Coronado Bay. Senior Naval Science Instructor for Thunderbird High School’s NJROTC, Commander Erich Schmidt, says, “This is a very memorable experience for them, and they learn valuable team building and leadership skills in a way unique to the sailing environment.”

I would say that more that 75% of the businesses in Moon Valley are hiring and looking for a “few good men and women”.

Bad service, reduced hours, delayed openings, and closings of some of our very favorite places. This is indeed the norm across the nation, and we are no exception to this horrible time in business. Employers are desperate for workers.

The customer service and offerings are also disappearing. I personally do not like counter service in restaurants, if I did, I would use drive-thru’s. I go out to interact, meet and socialize not only with who I am with, but who is waiting on me. We have had favorite wait staff for years, they not only serve you, but they become part of your network circle, and many are also like extended family. It is truly sad to see some of this slowly slipping away. The big question many ask is why? Money, the virus risk, unemployment, newer generations not wanting to work, homework balance?

How to cut food waste while keeping your family safe B Y K AT H Y G L I N D M E I E R Each year Americans waste an estimated $161 billion in food. In fact, onethird of all food purchased by the food industry and consumers ends up being discarded. That’s the equivalent of buying six bags of groceries at the store and throwing out two entire bags of food into a dumpster.

Food waste is of greatest concern for families on limited budgets, especially with food inflation at an all-time high. But how do you know how long food is good for and when to throw it out?

Expiration Dates Offer Clues “Best buy” dates play a role in evaluating food quality, but only tell part of the story. The confusion over “use by,” “sell by,” and “expires on” dates leads to an estimated 20 percent of food waste in the home.

The FDA is encouraging the food industry to use a standard “best if used by” date on packaging to indicate optimal quality. However, currently there is no standard in the industry except in the case of infant formula. These products must have a “use by” date to assure the public they have the required levels of nutrients and are of acceptable quality.

Follow Food Safety Guidelines Consumers can cut down on food waste and avoid food-borne illness by following a few basic rules set forth by food safety experts: + Refrigerate cut or peeled vegetables for maximum freshness & quality. + Freeze food that you can’t use within a week. + Avoid bulk and impulse purchases. + Don’t leave perishable food out at room temperature for more than two hours. This includes leftovers you bring home after eating out. If the room temperature is 90 degrees Fahrenheit or above, refrigerate food within one hour. + Use your sense of smell to identify off smells and your sight to look for discoloration. + Milk products are generally good for 7 to 10 days past their “best buy” date, but the most effective way to tell is by smelling it.

Download the Free Food Keeper Ap The United States Department of Agriculture has developed a smartphone app called Food Keeper, created in conjunction with Cornell University and the Food Marketing Institute. It provides a guide on how long foods will keep in the pantry, refrigerator or freezer. The app is divided into sections such as poultry, grains, etc. and includes virtually all foods available in the United States.

Every homeowner needs an estate plan

BY LIBBY BANK S, PLLC THE L AW OFFICE OF LIBBY BANK S If you own a home, you need a plan! If you bought a second home during the pandemic, you probably need a trust, especially if that vacation home is in another state.

When you own a home or two, that is part of your estate. You need to have a plan to take care of this important asset! A plan can assure that a person of your choice can step in when needed.

Managing your assets when you cannot do it yourself First, we must plan for your incapacity. What will happen to your home if you are unable to handle your finances? Who will pay your mortgage, keep the electricity on, and keep things running? Who will sign to sell the home if you need the money from a sale? With a proper estate plan, you appoint someone who will have the power to take care of your home, sell it if needed, and take care of you.

Without this plan in place, your family may need to file a court proceeding called conservatorship and ask the court to appoint them to manage your home.

This requires at least two attorneys – one for the family member asking for appointment, and one for you, to protect your interests. You can imagine the expense. Throw on top of that your ownership of a home in another state, and your family could have a costly mess on their hands.

Providing a smooth distribution of your assets on death Second, what will happen to your home when you die? Without a proper estate plan, it might not go to who you want to have it. If you want your spouse to have your home, let’s plan for that. But what about after your spouse dies? If there is no plan, your family has to file a probate court proceeding to get appointed, which can be a costly and drawn-out proceeding.

If you have children from a previous marriage and want them to get a share of your estate, you have to have a written plan for that to happen. Without an estate plan, if you pass away first and everything goes to your spouse, he or she decides who gets the house and other assets. If your spouse doesn’t have an estate plan, the law says that the house and other assets go to his or her heirs, whoever that may be. If you and your spouse don’t have common children, it isn’t going to your heirs without a written plan.

For a single person with more than one child, it is important to have in writing who will handle the estate. Without that, all three children have an equal right to serve as personal representative of your estate. If they all agree on who should serve, no problem. But if there is any disagreement, it could cause delays in getting control over your affairs, meaning your mortgage may go unpaid, and the utilities could be shut off before anyone has been appointed to take over and maintain the home and wrap up your estate.

The revocable trust provides the solution A revocable trust plan is a great way to manage your assets during your lifetime, to appoint the right people to manage your assets when you cannot and provides a smooth transition after your death. Someone with more than one home should strongly consider putting a revocable trust plan in place.

Rookie Mom: WE LOVE OUR GRANDPARENTS!

Sunday, September 12, 2021 marks Grandparents Day. If you’re anything like our family, you’re probably thinking of ways to make this day extra special to our parents who serve as role models for our children.

In this issue of Rookie Mom, my 4-year-old daughter Brynn takes over, relaying to me what she loves about her grandparents for Grandparents Day! Granny V “I like visiting her a lot of times. And I like her so much and she plays with me in the park. I get pretty dresses in the mail.

Thank you for the mail.”

For context, my husband’s parents live in Spokane, Washington. When we can, we visit them in the summer or fall, trying to make the most of our weekends there.

Vanessa, Adam’s mother, is called “Granny V” by Brynn (almost like a superheroine); they have a Phoenix Zoo membership, so they often travel to the zoo with Brynn when visiting Phoenix. Luckily, Brynn receives mail with fun activities and clothes along with a Highlights subscription from Granny V. We love her so much!

Grandad Derek “I love him a lot. He’s funny and don’t know the colors yet. It’s very silly.

And I love him so much. Hearts with love.

More context: My husband’s father, Derek, is colorblind. This has always cracked Brynn up and she brings this anomaly up often. Adam’s father is British, which is why he’s called “Grandad” (and Granny V is Welsh). More than that, Grandad and Brynn have gone trickor-treating together, spent Father’s Day together in Spokane, and Grandad is always a master at explaining the fish or animals at the aquarium or zoo.

Grandma Marie “I love her so much and I go with her to the cabin and we skip rocks. And that’s so fun. And we’re going to do that later. Lots of hearts to Grandma. And I have a new bobble head.”

Brynn’s middle name is “Marie” after my mother -- the most resilient woman I know. My mom is not only my rock, but one of Brynn’s as well.

My husband and I are beyond grateful to have Grandma Marie help out with Brynn when we need a weekend, and luckily my mother has a cabin in Munds Park which Brynnie loves. Brynnie and her Grandma Marie love skipping rocks at Lake Odell with Grandpa Mike. I have no idea about the bobble head comment -- probably a toy that my mom bought for her but hid from me!

Grandpa Mike “I love him so much. He’s grateful. And I think he’s a good grandpa. I like swimming in the pool with him and he makes good food. Hearts and hearts and more hearts.”

Grandpa Mike actually happens to be my stepfather. But Brynn’s always known him as her Grandpa Mike. Grandpa Mike is the unofficial “chef” in our family and always whips up the tastiest food, which Brynn always loves. She also loves skipping rocks at the lake with him and swimming in their backyard during summertime.

WESD Updates for SEPTEMBER

Welcome back to the new school year. Our schools welcomed students back on Monday, August 9. Our teachers, administrators and staff worked tirelessly preparing our campuses and classrooms for their return. They also ensured that every student felt welcome, safe and ready to learn.

I am truly grateful for their care and dedication and appreciative for the support they receive from you, our community.

WESD remains committed to the health and safety of our students and staff on our campuses and continues to implement multiple mitigation strategies.

This includes facemasks; physical distancing; frequent handwashing; routine disinfectant of high touch point areas; contact tracing in combination with isolation and quarantining; and enhanced ventilation in classrooms and common areas. WESD also offers an online option for grades K-8 to to meet the needs of our families during this challenging time.

WESD Teacher Selected as Finalist for Teacher of the Year I am happy to share that Alyssa Weed, music teacher at Acacia Elementary School, has been selected as a Top 10 finalist for the Arizona Educational Foundation (AEF) Teacher of the Year Award. Every year, the AEF recognizes 10 outstanding public school teachers in Arizona. The educator ultimately selected as Arizona Teacher of the Year becomes our state’s candidate for National Teacher of the Year.

WESD Governing Board Member, Lindsey Peterson, who is an English teacher in the Glendale Union High School District, was also selected as a finalist. Both Alyssa and Lindsey will be honored at the 2021 Arizona Teacher of

the Year awards ceremony in October. The WESD is truly fortunate to have such dedicated educators as part of our team.

All WESD Students Receive Free Breakfast and Lunch The WESD Nutrition Services department offers breakfast, lunches and snacks to all students at no charge during the school year. They are continuing to offer the Grab and Go weekly meal service to students enrolled in our Distance Learning program. Since last August, they have served over four million meals through this program and have ensured that every student has access to proper nutrition.

Summer Campus Improvement Projects Completed Over the summer, our construction teams worked diligently to complete campus improvement projects at 31 of our schools. New playgrounds, HVAC units, stage improvements, new flooring and enhanced security are just a few of the many projects that were completed this summer.

Many of these projects were made possible by your support of our 2016 bond.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support; we could not have done this without you. WESD’s bond-funded improvement projects will continue into next year.

MVNA Summer Days of 2021

It does seem that every year goes past a little faster – and it’s certainly the case for 2021. It has not been a total return to “normal” but things have opened up, people are travelling (though nearly all domestically), schools have re-opened, restaurant, stores and gyms are back operating again.

There will continue to be virus threats, as they normally modify themselves to propagate. Everyone should continue to make personal choices relative to your level of activity and personal protection. It’s hard to get true facts on the ongoing situation but would implore everyone to extend their source of news further out from your normal sources, so that you get a fuller, rounder picture of events.

Unfortunately, it’s really hard to find a single source of truth these days.

Your MVNA board of directors has been meeting throughout this past year – many have attended our monthly meetings via Zoom, though this year we did start getting back together at our local Barro’s pizza restaurant. One big project launched and completed was the painting of our 7th Street wall from Coral Gables to Hearn. The wall had seen multiple additions, changes, with different colors of paint. It’s now a cleaner, uniform look for our community.

Next, we are reviewing the community entrances to see how we can improve their look and have engaged various landscape companies for this effort and to provide monthly maintenance. This year has been a very active monsoon season and we are looking to provide periodic wash cleanouts to ensure these waterways can flow when it rains.

Our annual fall community wide yard sale event is planned for November 6th and 7th. This is a great time to sell your “extra stuff”, find some good deals

MVNA is already planning for the upcoming holiday season. This includes luminary planning (ordering of the stock), home decorating judging logistics, Food Drive preparation and more. We expect a couple of board vacancies in 2022 so if you are interested to serve – it’s a great time to do so. MVNA is a fun group that’s focused on maintaining our great community. We welcome new energy with folks bringing new ideas – we are a flexible organization. We hope to conduct the 2022 January annual meeting in person. We are looking for a venue and will advise when we know more.

That’s where most accidents occur. After the recent storms, the trail has been further eroded.

As we know, the North Mountain Visitors Center is operated by volunteers, some of whom do trail maintenance.

It behooves us to have a commitment from the City of Phoenix Parks Dept and our City Councilwoman Debra Stark that they value the safety of residents who enjoy hiking.

For many, Shaw Butte and the other trails in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve provide us with the exercise we need to stay healthy and in good physical condition, especially as we age. In so doing, we are hoping to avoid using the emergency services of the City of Phoenix Fire Dept which provides important and life-saving mountain rescue services.

From Hiking in and out of the NYC Subway Stations to Hiking Shaw Butte B Y PA U L A C U L L I S O N

Moving to the Moon Valley Area near the Shaw Butte Trail in 1974 meant a total lifestyle change for Tim and me, and our young family.

Climbing down and up the staircases of the NYC subways gave way to hiking up and down Shaw Butte on a regular basis. This new outdoor mode of living was a sharp contrast to the subterranean hours spent commuting to and from wherever. We love Shaw Butte.

Our first time hiking the Grand Canyon (in 1976) was such a spiritual experience for me that I volunteered to testify at the US Dept of Interior hearing in downtown Phoenix on behalf of the local chapter of the Sierra Club. Our mission was to stop uranium mining, helicopter flights and motorized boats within the Canyon. Although we were somewhat successful, those fights continue.

Over the next several decades we would hike throughout the state: Superstition Mountains (including the Flatiron, Weavers Needle, Peralta Trail, etc.), McDowell Mountains, Camelback, Piestewa Peak, Pinnacle Peak, Mt Humphries, Grand Canyon (7 times) including Havasupai Canyon, Hermit Trail, and Rim to Rim in a day.

Having convenient access to the Shaw Butte Trail means a great deal to us and our family. This trail has been the training ground for many of our other major hikes, as it is for other hikers. There is a strong sense of community amongst the hikers; we often share hiking adventures.

Unfortunately, husband Tim has had two major accidents on the Shaw Butte trail that we love so much. He is no longer able to hike; therefore, I have sprung into action. Knowing that years ago the City of Phoenix relinquished rights to the Shaw Butte trail to a conglomerate (including APS) which maintains the towers atop Shaw Butte, I have now come to understand that the CoP neglected to require this conglomerate to service the trail. It’s no surprise that over the years, we have noticed that the only trail maintenance performed is directly related to ability of the repair trucks to gain necessary traction, so they can service the towers.

Shaw Butte Trail: Children Happily Dive into After-School Swim Lessons

BY JULIE PEK We are so fortunate to live around the Phoenix Mountain Preserve! There are many ways to enjoy the trails from climbing to the summit to jogging, cycling or examining nature up close. The recent monsoon season brought some unintended re-design to the trails, making a few sections more treacherous, especially on the Shaw Butte Trail.

The City of Phoenix is responsible for maintaining 41,000 acres of preserves, including 200 miles of trails. Approximately 7 million use the trails every year. The Parks & Recreation Department is currently looking for volunteers to help them. You may have seen the call to action sign at the trailhead on Central Ave. They have anywhere from 65 to 80 events or projects every month involving trail monitoring and maintenance, tree and plant care, and many other special events.

You must be over 16 and must attend an orientation training. The more volunteers get actively involved in trail maintenance, the more we can all enjoy our special mountain preserve for years to come.

Now that kids are back in school, many parents have been enrolling their children in after-school swim lessons at the Hubbard Family Swim School.

“Back-to-school is a great time to enroll children in swim lessons during the week or on the weekend,” says Ann Marie Sunderhaus, CEO of Hubbard Family Swim Schools. “Not only is swimming excellent exercise for children to enjoy after school and a wonderful way for them to burn off energy, we don’t want children to lose the important swim skills and swim strokes they learned over the summer.” The temperature of the heated indoor pools remains at a very warm and comfortable 90 degrees year-round.

Founded in 1998 by co-owners Bob and Kathy Hubbard - world-renowned experts and educators in the field of infant swimming - Hubbard Family Swim School offers lessons to children two months to 12 years of age. The Hubbard’s basic philosophy is this: Children everywhere must learn how to swim.

Learning to swim should not be a choice.

Children who learn how to swim actually demonstrate more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than other children, according to worldleading research led by Griffith University in Australia.

Their groundbreaking 2013 findings of a four-year study indicate that swimming children have many advantages when starting school. Swimming children scored significantly better than the normal population on a number of measures that are very important for their transition to school - their cognitive development, language development, and their physical development.

The study surveyed 7,000 parents from Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. over three years.

The study showed that children’s fine motor skills and overall coordination were more developed as a result of taking swim lessons and it showed that children who start lessons early were more socially and emotionally ready to start school.

In 2019, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also formally stated that children and parents need to learn to swim. Basic water competency swim skills according to the AAP include the ability to enter the water, surface, turn around, propel oneself for at least 25 yards and then exit the water. The Hubbard swim instructors work hard to meet those goals by laying a strong foundation for skilled, confident swimmers.

“We have spent over 20 years here in Arizona watching thousands of children under the age of 4 become calm and confident swimmers,” adds Sunderhaus. “It’s such a joy for us to help introduce children to the wonderful sport of swimming which can easily become a life-long sport.” Many students who grew up taking swim lessons at Hubbard also went on to have competitive swim careers in high school and college.

Hubbard in Phoenix offers swim lessons at several different times, seven days a week. Protect Your Elders THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON I browsed through three industry related magazines the other day, and each one had an article outlining scams perpetrated against elders (actually people of all ages). The common element was that the initial contact was made either on-line or by telephone.

While an eventual meeting in-person may occur, more often than not it doesn’t.

In these cases, you really don’t know with whom you are speaking or corresponding. Recently, a friend told us about a relative that had been bilked out of her life savings by someone she met on-line. While she had never actually met this person, they developed an emotional relationship via email. Purportedly, he was an Army officer stationed in a third world country. He had a series of emergencies and within a year she was wiped out financially.

Could this happen to you? Maybe not, but . . .

Have you ever donated to save the elephants in India? Have you ever pledged $19.95 per month to save homeless pets? Have you ever responded to a nonsensical questionnaire on Facebook, like “Name a city that doesn’t have an “a” in its name?”

An absolute stranger could now have your name and contact information, and they know you have a trusting nature and a soft heart.

Universally, these articles warn against giving any personal information over the phone or on-line. Do not open links in emails from people you don’t know.

Even if you are familiar with the source, but it just doesn’t feel right, independently verify that it is legit before you click on that link. And, have “the conversation” with your family members and friends.

We have all heard the axiom: “if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.”

The investment pro that offers high returns on an investment, may actually send you several interest or dividend payments. When they disappear, so does your money.

Solicitations from scam artists after a big storm or natural disaster can be very alluring. Bids to do needed repairs at bargain basement prices should make you skeptical. Shoddy workmanship, or disappearing with your deposit, required to purchase materials, is common. Verify your sources before you enter into any contract.

“Free Lunches” to attend an investment seminar, can turn out to be hard sell opportunities for well-trained scammers. You do this once, they do it as a living.

The odds are not in your favor.

I could go on and on, but the point is - scamming is rife. Verify your sources before you commit to a contract or investment. Most importantly, protect your parents and older family members. Even though one family member may be tasked with tending to their finances, transparency is the key. Frequent open conversations with other family members and a trusted investment advisor are very prudent. The ultimate goal is for them to be able to enjoy the fruits of their labors, not to be bilked out their life savings by some unscrupulous charlatan.

According to author, Kenneth Davis, The 1916-1918 Spanish Flu epidemic is being re-studied because of its enormous impact on the entire planet’s people. 20 to 50 million deaths were thought to be the number between 1916-1919. People in isolated villages succumbed to its cruelty.

In Tucson, children were sent to school with garlic bulbs and cloves strung onto necklaces and masks were made of layers of cheesecloth. One Native American woman used sweetgrass smoke and kerosene mixed with sugar as remedies. (This is NOT recommended.) Spitting in public was made a crime.

People were urged to sleep with their windows open.

The draft was put on hold during World War I because Spanish Flu affected troops especially hard. Katherine Anne Porter, a journalist for the Rocky Mountain News, caught the Spanish Flu. Allegedly she was cured using strychnine, a rat poison. (Also not at all advised!) She lost all her hair. As her hair grew back and she regained her mental abilities which were very compromised due to the strychnine, she joined the Red Cross and was photographed in the “America’s answer to humanity’s challenge” poster. She spoke before many groups to urge them to buy war bonds to fund World War I which happed at the same time as the Spanish Flu. [Maybe we need Covid bonds. I have been urging new bond programs for some time now. Investing in our country would be helpful if the interest rates are high enough so young people and seniors can have fair interest rates again for using our money.]

Fear was ruling people who were worn out by the Flu and World War I. The Sedition Act was passed making it a crime to “utter, print, write or publish any disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language about the form of government of the United States.” Epidemics and war both promote waves of over-reaction and blaming. “Hamburgers were renamed “liberty steaks” and sauerkraut was called “liberty cabbage.” History is so interesting to read. It teaches so much. Big crowds buying bonds promoted the progress of the Spanish Flu. This invisible virus changed America. If parents died, children often fared badly with relatives. Or they did well and grew up fast. Our children have no idea what our parents went through in 1916-18. There were few government resources available. Materials and personnel, including doctors, were being shipped across the Atlantic to win the war.

There were three waves of the Spanish Flu. The first was the lightest.

The second and third most deadly. Does all this sound familiar? There was no inoculation for Spanish Flu. There is for Covid 19. We may need boosters for new variants. It is a new technology which similarly gives us genetically engineered foods we have been eating for at least two decades now. I was opposed to genetic engineering when it was introduced. I now understand that it is part of our realty and there appears to be no stopping it even though CRISPER’s developer wants more controls. Immunizations statistically slow a deadly virus that is causing many to have lasting effects. Too many have died. This pandemic is different in so many ways.

We are learning from the past, creating new tools, and keeping joy going in so many ways.

These bikes are quite the rage. This week on my long bike ride I saw 8 of these bikes. They are divided into 3 groups. Class one is pedal assist only you must pedal to turn on the motor. Class two is like class one but has a over ride lever so you wouldn’t have to pedal and speed is limited to 20 mph. Class three is pedal assist only speed limited of 28 mph. Some trails or paths will not allow any electric bikes. Some states have restricted class two and three because the greater speed. Assisted bikes add a new dimension to biking. You can ride up the hill you never could or ride without the assist an kick in the motor on the way home. Slower riders can keep up with faster riders. The door is open to more biking. I rode a assist bike back an forth home to work. Going over 7st hill is a lot more fun and faster to. I’m back to my regular bike no assist though. I will just do my own assisting for a while. Biking is good for you!

For iPhones 2017 and later, there is an emergency SOS feature set up right when you take an iPhone out of the box. To access it, you simply hold down the side button and the volume buttons. Then, you’ll find a slider on the screen that says “Emergency SOS” If you drag this across, it’ll make an immediate call to the emergency services. You can further set up your iPhone by clicking on the Health app and press on the profile picture. There you’ll find an option called Medical ID and at the bottom of the page you’ll see emergency contacts. You can also set up your iphone to call a loved one directly if you feel threatened.

For Android phones, you can often find the information you need by searching in your phone’s Settings for phrases such as SOS messages or simply the word emergency. For example, Samsung phones have a feature called Send SOS Messages that allows you to press the side key three times to automatically message someone with your location. It will automatically attach pictures using your rear and front camera, as well as an audio recording of the moments before the message was sent. Those guys on CSI do it that way too! Talk about feeling safe with Mark Harmon on the other end of the phone! Oh yeah...

Lighting automation is a simple idea in home safety optics encompassing everything from a one-room lamp to a whole house system. By controlling interior and exterior lighting your home will feel safer and look less vulnerable to outsiders. Smart Lightbulbs simply plug into any outlet or lamp and can be purchased individually at places like Home Depot or whole systems at places like Best Buy or online. Then from your phone or computer you (yes you!) can program groups of lights, rooms or the whole house to turn off, on or dim with the touch of a finger. It’s easier than you might think. Really!

Security Systems. Todays security options are more varied than the beep beep bop beep security control pad at the back door. There are cameras you can hang yourself, motion sensors you can set up in the bookcase and lights that flash on with the slightest evidence of a possible intruder or stray cat. Ring and Arlo are simple solutions that connect with a community of users that oftentimes share neighborhood information and alerts. If you have a Google Home, Alexa Echo or Nest there are some very nifty security features they have to customize to your lifestyle. All in all, there are many cool tech devices around to keep you safe with your cell phone at the top of list. Probably the best thing to do in just about any situation, fearful, lonely, anxious or uncertain is to call a loved one and simply say hello.

Mama Cow

With her adorable spots and distinct black and white coloring, it is no wonder how the lovely Mama Cow (669216) got her name. At just three-years-young, this American pit bull terrier has already been through quite a bit in her short life.

In early July, Arizona Humane Society Cruelty Investigators found her and two other pups abandoned in an apartment in horrible conditions. Mama Cow was also tethered indoors and had no access to food or water. Upon arrival to AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital™, she was found to be fairly healthy with just a few masses that needed to be removed and should be kept an eye on by her future adopter to ensure they do not grow back.

Mama Cow is just as wiggly and adorable as her larger animal counterpart that she is named after, however it does take a bit to for her to warm up to new people. Because of this, this adorable dog cow would do best as the only dog in the home and would also benefit from meeting everyone to ensure a proper fit. After such a string of bad luck, Mama Cow is really hoping there is someone out there who falls in love with her puppy eyes and delightfully floppy ears.

BLOCK WATCHER BY BLANCHE LUKES Living in Phoenix in the desert sure has some pluses. Despite the summer heat and the need to water grass and flowers more, we are blessed with wonderful weather. Coming from the mid west one sure enjoys our daily sun treatment.

Supposedly we get enough sun each day we are treating our bodies to needed Vitamin D, those of us that spend time indoors need to make an effort to bath ourselves in sun shine.

Lets not forget those wonderful people who take care of our yards, pools and streets. They spend all day in the sun. Now that is not an easy thing to do, especially the days over 100.

I have written before about good deeds. Let’s expand the concept and make an effort to give our appreciation to all the workers that are there for us. Last month I recognized our men and woman in blue. I can’t forget our local fire fighters. Having recently had need of their services, I can’t rave enough about having them so close, always available, plus super knowledgeable beyond putting out a fire.

Don’t forget the yard men, the street workers, the repair man, the meter reader, if they still do that. :-) A few months back, I wrote about the Good Deed Fellowship. Hopefully you read it and took kindly to the edict of doing a good deed everyday. Picking up a piece of trash (lots of opportunity there!, holding a door open, returning the shopping carts to their stalls). No one wants their car scratch or banged by a maverick cart! How about calling someone and thanking them for having impacted your life in a positive way. Then look up and down your block and see if there is someone you can reach out to. The GAIN Day event is a perfect way to do that. I hold mine the third Saturday in October, on our drive way around supper time.

Last year instead of a pot luck I did a ice cream social. Fill your ice chest with your favorite ice cream bars/popsicles. My neighbors loved it and it was so easy.

The Power of Fermented Foods

We’re learning more every day about the importance of gut health, specifically the profound D .N W , com C.M.T., D.C. influence the GI microbiome may exert over our health. Conditions 09 M T C C ranging from to irritable bowel syndrome to inflammatory bowel disease and even some forms of cancer may get their start courtesy of imbalances in gut microbiota. Which brings us to the importance of including fermented foods in your diet.

Research suggests a diet high in fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, fermented cottage cheese, kimchi and other fermented vegetables, vegetable brine drinks, and kombucha tea not only increases microbial diversity in the gut (which is a good thing); it also appears to be more beneficial than a high-fiber diet (high in legumes, seeds, whole grains, nuts, vegetables and fruits) in doing so. The fermented-foods diet also lowered levels of inflammatory proteins, unlike the high-fiber diet.

Published in the research journal Cell, the study found that the increase in microbial diversity and reduction in inflammatory proteins occurred during a relatively short time frame, as the diet intervention lasted only 10 weeks. Another reason the findings are important: microbiome diversity appears to benefit weight maintenance, and may decrease the risk of diabetes, cancer and heart disease.
