btc is about to drive boys team charity not only has a multitude of philanthropies that it serves, but also helps provide the members with some great guidance on all sorts of different topics that are pertinent to teenage boys! boys team charity class of 2024 is full of soon to be drivers, and we want them to be as prepared as possible. For our spring meeting, Sandy Benson and Amy Rampley, the class managers, invited guest speakers to speak to safe driving and the impact teenage male drivers have on their parents’ insurance rates. Joe Navarro, from The Institute of Driver Safety, spoke to the class about how to handle this very important responsibility. The Institute of Driver Safety recruits retired law enforcement employees as their driving instructctors, and they know exactly what advice to offer new drivers given their unique perspectives. Joe has taken many teenage drivers out on the roads to practice driving. He discussed the dangers of being distracted while behind the wheel of the car. There were some great questions about how to handle different driving situations.

In addition, Adrienne Ritter and Jay Lasalle from Allstate Insurance Company also spoke to our class.

They gave some great advice about slowing down and taking the time to always make good, safe decisions.

This will lead to less accidents and of course avoiding a speeding ticket which can raise the insurance rates.

Again the emphasis was on how the driver has an enormous responsibility to be careful, safe and aware.

Escape your Limitations: My story about escaping alcatraz

BY AN D R E W HAH N E Only a few people have escaped from Alcatraz Prison, right? Not only is it very hard to escape from this world-famous prison, but the water is freezing, there are sharks, and the swim is impossible. Right? Well, swimming from Alcatraz to San Francisco is one of the most famous open water swims in the world, however, very few people can say they have accomplished this. And fewer can say they have swum under and along the path of the Golden Gate Bridge. But it is a very select group of people that can say they have done both in one weekend. Despite the legend that swimming from Alcatraz is dangerous and seemingly impossible, I have accomplished this task annually since I was 12, but I have not done it alone.

Along with my friends, family, and coaches, I have received support from all of those who volunteer to secure the bay for each swim. In the water, there are many kayaks, coast guard boats, police jet skis, and other support boats to make sure the event goes smoothly.

Alcatraz and Golden Gate Swims is an annual fundraiser sponsored by F.A.S.T. that happens in early April. FAST (Foundation for Aquatic Safety and Training) is an organization dedicated to teaching refugee children swimming and water safety.

Why is it important? Because every day about 10 people die from drowning. Simply knowing how to swim can mean the difference between life and death.

Throughout the summers of each year’s event, I have volunteered with F.A.S.T. in their endeavor to teach refugees. Volunteers meet at a local swim school and are assigned to one or two children at the start of the summer. As the summer goes by, we teach them the basics of swimming and water safety. It is truly amazing to see them grow in their swimming abilities and more importantly if they find themselves in a dangerous situation, they will know how to stay afloat and get to safety.

The first time I heard about the Alcatraz swims was at one of my Neptune Swim Club’s practices from the club’s head coach, Joe Zemaitis. Neptune’s headquarters and many of its practices are in our backyard – at Moon Valley Country Club. Coach Joe is not only the head organizer for the swims, but is also an amazing motivator. As a world-record-holding open water swimmer, he is a great remarkable mentor to all those who participate in this event.

The event takes place every April, but training starts as early as October. To train, the swimmers meet in the winter at Rattlesnake Cove, an inlet of Bartlett Lake sectioned off from motorized boats. Out in the cove are a line of buoys, to which you swim, around a few times and back. Yes, you are probably thinking: who in the right mind would swim in Bartlett Lake in Continued on page 6

Summer is coming and it is looking like some borders and countries just may open for the mere pleasure of site-seeing, gastronomic delights and making of many memories while seeing and spending time with family and friends.

As many of us have sat “arm-chair” surfing for the past year, I came across something I have found to be VERY interesting and wanted to share as we start to prepare for seeing the world again.

Yes, I do have a few pieces, and buy for our gift shops in Williams, but also remember growing up hunting with my family, and know not a one of us would have been caught “dead” in CAMO out of the field!! CAMO was made to hide and sneak in and amongst the land, blend in with the trees to hide from the animals. Never a fashion statement!

Escape... continued from page 4 the wintertime?? Well, it is a great place to train for the San Francisco swims because it prepares you for the temperature, an hour in open water, and the fact that you will not be able to see very far under you.

The event in San Francisco starts early in the morning on Hyde Street Pier, where the group of swimmers gathers at dawn in wetsuits to be checked in. From there, you walk to the boats that take you out to the famous Alcatraz Island. Off the shore of the legendary prison, you wait for the signal to jump from your boat into the bay.

Without delay, as the tides become cooperative, you get the signal. Adrenaline builds up as all the swimmers jump in the water. As your feet enter the ~ 50º water, you realize just how cold it’s going to be. As you jump in, you are immersed in the water. Your only choice is to swim. The first 5 minutes are the worst as your hands, feet, and face are exposed to the cold water. But after about 10 minutes, you eventually acclimate to the cold temperatures, and then, all you have to do is enjoy the swim. After 1.2 miles of swimming, you enter Aquatic Park Cove, a harbor attached to mainland San Francisco, where your family and friends are waiting for you on the beach with a warm towel and

many congratulations.

This event consists of two swims. The next day, you are greeted with another early morning assembly at Hyde Street Pier to be checked in again. From there, you walk to the boats that take you on a 15-minute ride to the famous Golden Gate Bridge. Like the day before on the boat, we wait for favorable tides and the signal to jump. You swim from the south tower to the north tower of the bridge.

Swimming under the bridge gives you a very unique view of the magnificent landmark and the legendary skyline that is next to it. The Golden Gate Bridge swim is 1.2 miles and it is much choppier (the waves are bigger) because it is closer to the open ocean. After swimming under the bridge and to the other side, the boat is waiting for you to take you back to San Francisco.

These swims have a lot of meaning to me. At first, it seemed like a faraway goal but has now become one of my greatest accomplishments. The first time I swam in 2016, I was accompanied by an angel swimmer (a member of the South End Rowing Club, who knows how to swim in the bay very well and is offered as a guide to new swimmers of the event). I have come a long way from needing encouragement as a young swimmer at the age of 12 to now giving encouragement to younger swimmers at the age of 17. I look forward every year to doing the fundraiser with my friends. This year was the fifth time I’ve done it and this year was unlike any due to all the covid precautions. The swims in 2020 were canceled due to covid outbreaks, but throughout this year the prospect of the swims have given me hope. The hope that everything will go back to normal and the hope that soon gathering for a great cause will never have to be canceled again. I also hope my story inspires you.

Size Matters

M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C BY D EB B I E ER BS TO E SSER In February I shared that I am not a hoarder, but I do save cool things. Some of those things were smaller clothes from a long ago time in my 20’s. The only time I’ve ever been heavy was after giving birth to my boys. I know that the perception we have of ourselves is many times unrealistic and I know that when I used to feel ‘fat’ I really wasn’t. However, I want to be alive and healthy whenever we finally have grandchildren and decided that I wanted to enjoy my remaining years as a thin person.

I stalked Keto sites on social media for six months before I decided to relinquish my wine, dairy and bread-again. I’d already given them up years earlier when I switched to a Paleo lifestyle, but snuck them back in, and while I was successful with that and it is similar to Keto, I didn’t want to give up cheese and sour cream anymore. For me the biggest difference between the two is being able to eat milk products. I bought a Keto cookbook and every recipe was delicious!

This has been the most successful venture in weight loss I’ve ever experienced. The first week was tough, but I shouldn’t be eating gluten anyway with my sensitivity to it. I envisioned myself looking the way I wanted to. I kept stalking the social media sites for inspiration and incorporated intermittent fasting again, only this time I did it sensibly. I prayed for strength and willpower and got it. Then it happened, I became what the Ketoites call a fat burning machine. I’m back to drinking wine sometimes and still maintaining.

There are a few things I’ve learned from this whole journey; God really does listen to the little things, I do have willpower-with His help, exercising without food isn’t going to hurt me, intermittent fasting is actually good for us. It turns out that breakfast is not the most important meal of the day when you get older. Additionally, working out in a fasting state speeds up fat loss, so I hit the gym before eating and moved up our dinner time from 7p to 5p and because Gary was onboard with me, it worked and the pounds fell off. I only set out to lose the 5#s I had gained during the online, pandemic teaching fiasco, but the fat melted away so easily, I kept going. The more I lost, the better I felt. Finally, my old size 6 in the 80’s is now my new smaller size. This is probably due to the fact that the clothing industry wants to keep selling, so they’re trying to trick us into thinking we’re not as big as we are, so they changed the sizes. I’m not delusional, I know my new size isn’t real, but it still makes me smile.

I want to let anyone interested in changing their lifestyle know, that it’s so much easier than you think. Exercise alone and diet alone never worked for me, it’s the combination and consistency that do the trick. Cross training really is the best route to total body fitness. At Anytime Fitness I can do yoga, Pilates, spin, take classes with a personal trainer, do the elliptical, treadmill or rowing machines and the weight resistance has not only reshaped my body and strengthened my bones, but after years of pain, my shoulders don’t hurt anymore. Also, Anytime has an Evolt Body Composition Scanner that measures body fat and muscle mass, among many other things. In November, despite losing weight, it said I still had too much fat. However, it also showed that I’m well balanced and it gave me more to work towards.

I was always a big eater with a serious sweet tooth. My mother called me ‘stomach’ as I was a bottomless pit. Now I’m rarely hungry and sugar doesn’t do much for me anymore. If I do want something sinfully sweet, I grab a mini pie at Mamma Toledos Pie Hole and leave the crust behind, which used to be my favorite part. So if I can make such drastic changes, anyone can.

It’s not magic, but it sure feels like it should be!

Picking your executor or Trustee

At some point your estate will be managed by someone other than you. If you are incapacitated, that person will step in to manage it to care for you, and on your death someone will wrap up your estate and distribute your assets to others. If you put an estate plan in place, via a Will or Trust, you decide who that person will be. If you don’t, the State of Arizona, via the legislature, has decided who that will be. Will the State’s choice be one you are happy with?

When you establish a Revocable Living Trust, the person in charge is your successor trustee.

That successor trustee will be caring for your finances to care for you if you can’t handle your estate because of incapacity. The successor you pick to serve after your death will make sure your last expenses are paid and that your assets are distributed the way you direct to the people you want to have them.

A common question is just how to pick the successor trustee. Here are qualities to look for in a successor trustee: 1. Integrity and loyalty. For me, this is the most important quality. It is terrible to get the call that a trustee has been mishandling money or, worse, filling their own pockets with trust assets. It is essential to select someone you trust implicitly, someone you believe would never consider misusing the trust assets.

2. General business competence and willingness to seek assistance. You might think you need someone with investment savvy to be your trustee. What you really need is someone who is willing to seek out and listen to good counsel and advice, and someone with the capacity to discern between good and bad advice. Your trustee’s understanding of business and financial matters and their ability to find a good investment advisor is more important than their (perceived) ability to pick winning stocks.

3. Sensitivity to and understanding of your beneficiaries’ needs and circumstances. This factor is one that often keeps a client from appointing a bank, trust company or fiduciary as trustee. Will the institution be mindful of what you would want for your beneficiaries, or will it be too regimented about what it sees as a “need”? A family member may be a better choice for many people, simply because they will be more responsive to a beneficiary’s requests. Where there are substantial assets in a trust, however, a good compromise might be a family member and a trust company serving as co-trustees. In addition, a local institution may be more responsive. When you interview a trust company, ask if the person who would serve as the primary contact for the trustee is located in Arizona or is out of state.

4. Similar values and attitudes about money. It’s important for a trustee to understand what you want for your beneficiaries in the way of distributions, access to the assets, and opportunities to manage the assets themselves. If your values and your trustee’s values are too incongruent, your beneficiaries may not be treated the way you want. If learning to work hard and make your own way is important to you, don’t pick a trustee that wants to pay for everything for a child. If you want a beneficiary to have the opportunity to learn how to manage the trust assets, pick a trustee who is willing to teach the beneficiary and have them involved in decision-making.

Willingness and ability to serve. Always ask whether the trustee is willing to serve and has the time to do so. The initial work of a trustee can be quite time consuming, and ongoing maintenance and accounting take time as well. If your first choice for trustee is reluctant, that may be a sign that he doesn’t really have the time or ability to do a good job.

Geographic location. With globalization and advances in technology and communication, the location of your trustee and beneficiaries may not be so important. Still, the nature of your assets may necessitate selecting someone who is nearby.

For instance, if you own several rental properties in Phoenix, a trustee in New York won’t be able to readily check on whether the property manager is really doing its job. The properties may be run down and lose value before the long distance trustee realizes it. Consider also that if you are incapacitated, you may want a trustee who is nearby to watch over your care as well as the money being paid for your care. Keep in mind too, that you can appoint one trustee to serve while you are incapacitated and another to serve after your death.

Cost and amount of estate assets. Last, you need to consider cost. Banks and trust companies generally charge based on a percentage of the assets under management. Many don’t offer trustee services for estates under $2-5 million (or more).

Private fiduciaries, who are licensed by the state, charge on an hourly basis. While they are often willing to manage smaller estates, many have limitations. A family member or friend may be willing to manage your estate whatever its size. Remember, though, that you should provide compensation for the work the trustee performs, even if he is your brother.

Selecting a trustee is important. If you keep these principles in mind, you should feel confident you have made a good choice. Rookie Mom: My 4-Year-Old Is ‘Boy Crazy’ B Y B R I G H I D CO N S TA B L E Personally, I think I nailed the baby and early toddler years. I’d like to consider myself a natural mother who is just eager to soothe, calm, and nurture.

But, I feel like these next few years with my daughter are going to be a bit of a question mark for me when it comes to relationships.

Take young romance for instance.

A new classmate entered Brynn’s classroom in Pre-K at Sandra Day O’Connor this month. A boy. According to her teacher, Brynn and her “best friend” at school, let’s call her Jessica, and have apparently been fighting over him.

My husband, Adam, picked up Brynn one day and her teacher said: “Brynn has become boy crazy!” Even with Brynn shouting to this poor new boy, let’s call him Joseph, as she leaves school: “Hey Joseph, you’re a cutie!”

Cutie, cutie, cutie. That’s all she says to and about Joseph. Adam and I are laughing about it, trying to make it a gigantic joke to relay for future teen Brynn.

One night, Brynn had trouble going to sleep. I’m rubbing her back, giving her warm milk, telling her to shut her eyes and focus on the lullaby music -- just anything to get her to rest.

Brynn suddenly confesses: “Mommy?”

“Yes, baby?”

“Me and Jessica were playing with Joseph in the sand. We told him to pick one of us to be his girlfriend and he picked Jessica. My heart hurts.”

My. Heart. Hurts.

I then reacted. A bit passionately maybe.

“Brynn, you are an incredible little girl. You are kind, and funny, and sweet, and smart, and who cares if he chose Jessica? You’re going to have so many people in love with you in your life.”

Brynn hugged me and held on a little, saying nothing, then giving herself to sleep soon after.

Personally, I don’t know if I said the right thing to her -- to me it felt that I didn’t, I was so knee-jerk about it. Yet as days went on and I thought about this,

and shared this story with others, the more I felt that I didn’t.

As parents, I fully agree that we’re not to shape conversations to our children where we make them value their intelligence or looks in order to appeal towards others. It seemed like a failing on my part.

How do I respond to when my child is rejected by her peers? Brynn’s grandfather thinks the boy had no idea what really happened when the two girls ganged up on him to “pick.” But it really didn’t matter because the whole situation made my daughter feel plain old lousy. And this is where I know these next few years are going to be tough.

Because I will want to control how people feel about my daughter and how she feels about them, but these quintessential emotions are all up to her, and all I can do is watch how her confidence is shaped.

Either way, these little moments as Brynn age truly make me feel like a Rookie Mom -- and a classic overthinker!

Stinson outlined several approaches to tapping into this potential resource: Refinance Your Mortgage – He states that if you can save even 1% on rate, your payments will be less. This may be a good strategy if you don’t mind extending your mortgage term back to the 30-year threshold.

A cash-out refinance is a good mechanism for those that need a hunk of cash.

Rates are typically higher on a cash-out, but in today’s low interest environment, you may still be able to lower your rate and your payment, and take cash-out.

He stresses that to optimize the benefit, take no more out that 80% of appraisal.

Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) – This is usually a second-mortgage (if you still have a first) that provides a revolving line of credit, which you can tap and/or pay-down as your situation dictates. There is an initial draw period (usually ten years) where you can access the unused portion of your line by simply writing a check. Your normal monthly payment would be the interest for the period plus one or two percent of the credit line balance. After the draw period, the payback phase begins which may substantially increase your monthly payment or

Explore your options for investing the difference prior to actually receiving it. Knowledge is power.

Take Out a Reverse Mortgage – This allows seniors 62 and older to convert their home equity into a line of credit, a monthly payment, a lump sum payment or a combination of the three. This option eliminates your monthly mortgage payment (you must still pay property taxes and hazard insurance) and defers the pay back until that time when you no longer occupy the home.

Some advantages are that you never owe more that the home will sell for.

You are not required to make monthly payments, but you can, depending on your situation. Your heirs can buy the home for the indebtedness or 95% of the appraisal, whichever is less.

It is strongly advised that before making any of these moves, it is wise to talk it over with the family and a trusted financial advisor. Each of these options requires some sort of a mortgage transaction. Find a trusted mortgage loan officer and discuss these strategies with him or her as well. Like I said previously – knowledge is power.

Shaw Butte Trail: Mr. Auburn

For the longest time I thought of him as “Mr. Auburn” until I learned his name. It’s Wayne and everyone knows him on Shaw Butte Trail.

Wayne likes to hike every day and he often hikes to the summit twice in one outing. Once with his early morning friends, and then again with friends who start later. He alternates hiking the summit with hiking the flat trails with another set of friends. And after hiking they all meet up for breakfast (Wayne’s favorite meal) at different restaurants in the neighborhood.

He is an Alabama native, attended Auburn University, was a member of the US Air Force, and came to Arizona to work for Honeywell as an engineer.

Wayne was a member of a hiking group that took him to the Grand Canyon, Havasupai, and other Arizona trails. So, it was natural for him to take up daily hiking in his own neighborhood once he retired. Meeting up with his friends motivates him to come out.

When you hike every day, there are some moments that stand out more than others. One spring morning Wayne and his friends were coming down the trail when a big dark cloud appeared out of the southwest. By the time they got to the saddle, it “poured down so hard that water filled the entire width of the trail and we couldn’t see the trail under our feet,” he said. “It felt like we were walking on water.”

If you hike Shaw Butte trail on any morning, you are likely to see Wayne with his friends. You’ll recognize him by his Auburn t-shirt and by the friendly greeting he will give you.

We need to remember that we have a special group of Phoenix Police Officers serving our community. Unique to the city of Phoenix, we have officers (CAOs) assigned to communities. Moon Valley is in the Black Mountain precinct. With all the hoopla going on in different parts of the country I want to set the record straight. We in Moon Valley have the BEST. The men and women in blue that service Phoenix are awesome people. I can’t imagine our comfort in our community without them.

So, I, on behalf of my friends and neighbors, am saying THANK YOU. I love this program called Community Action Officers. It gives us a sense of camaraderie. I know they are looking out for us and we don’t say thank you enough. That tends to be a problem in our society in a lot of areas. Too many people taking for granted the good work set up for us by our founding and past leaders.

A while back I wrote about “The Good Deed Fellowship.” What a novel idea — doing a good deed each day. Try it for a month. You will be surprised how the days zip by and you didn’t do one! Whoops, where is that commitment? Let’s challenge everyone in our circle to do it, then make a point of going back and seeing if they kept their word. Whoops there is another challenge. Keeping our word!

My goodness, one sure has opportunities to make positive changes, don’t we!

So remember that our men and women in blue have committed themselves to help and protect us. Our homes, our families, our children, and our communities. They are people with all of that too. They are going the extra mile for the betterment of all. If you pray, do so. If you have an opportunity to say thank you in person, do so. Let’s lead by example, and show respect for their commitment, dedication and resolve.

The flowers in our respective gardens of life are joys to behold, as our friends and family are close to our hearts. For the Arizona Women’s Partnership (AZWP), an all-volunteer philanthropic non-profit, these flowers come as supporters and volunteers.

“Our garden has been growing since 2002. Many flowers continue to bloom for us via ‘job postings’ on www. volunteermatch.org and chance meetings at local events”, notes Paula Cullison, President and Founder of AZWP. Claudia Manzano Herrera is a valued part of the ever-growing list of AZWP Young Professional Volunteers. She is currently a student at the UNIBE School of Medicine - Universidad Iberoamericana.

“For the Arizona Women’s Partnership, based in Moon Valley, volunteers are a critical part of our growth. With their help, we continue to broaden our donor base. Make every day Earth Day B Y PAU L A G . C U L L I S O N The 1970s was a time of consciousness raising, political upheaval, antiestablishment thinking, anti-war activism and social unrest. Our mantras were profound: Stop Pollution and Save the Earth; War is not healthy for children and other living things; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle; Waste not - Want not. Local activism was commonplace throughout New York City. At that time, vacant lots were being turned into community gardens.

As part of the Citizens for a Better New York, and as one who had already campaigned for political candidates and rallied around numerous social issues, getting on board with the first Earth Day event in New York City on April 22, 1970, was a natural choice. Our committee focused on Brooklyn Heights and had organized a neighborhood Saturday morning recycling project in the back of a local church. The money received from the newspapers, bottles and aluminum allowed us to break even, since we needed to rent a truck to take the items to a recycling center.

We had no idea that the Earth Day movement of April 22 in 1970 would have attracted more than 20 million people across the United States. The local park became the center for our Earth Day celebration. Our children became walking slogans for the environmental movement with the patches we sewed on their clothing. Our goal was to educate the community about the three Rs. We set up information tables, made kid-friendly games using recycled material, and gathered signatures on petitions to change city ordinances regarding waste management.

In spite of Mr. McGuire’s advice to Dustin Hoffman in “The Graduate,” we were opposed to plastic. We did not believe that plastic would to be helpful to the future of the planet. Unfortunately, we lost that battle and others.

Since 1970, people have created numerous catastrophic environmental problems. The United States constitutes only four percent of the world’s population but consumes about 25 percent of the world’s resources. There is a (LED) light at the end of the environmental tunnel and the tide is finally turning, as there is a great awareness of this critical issue.

Years later (1990) I would organize a major event in Phoenix, prior to my attending the United Nations Conference on the Environment in Rio di Janeiro, Brazil. The theme of the event: Politics of the Environment featured our key-note speaker, Bella Abzug, the late US Congresswoman from NY. I had personally invited Bella after seeing her an intimate event in NYC which honored Wangari Mathai who started the Green Belt Movement in Kenya and who receive a Nobel Peace Prize for her work.

At that memorable reception in NYC, Bella turned to me and said (in her own ‘gentle way’): “Hey You, you’re from Arizona. Why don’t you do something?”

To which I replied, “Who Me? … If I do ‘something’, then you need to be our featured speaker.” Caught off guard, she responded with an ‘Oh .. OK’. I made sure it became a reality - which was no small task.

We opened our SRO event with a Native American blessing and had a local children’s group sing about saving Mother Earth. It was an unforgettable occasion. A few weeks later, I convened a Forum on the Environment which was held in the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Conference Center on Jefferson Street. Over 60 local environmentally related organizations shared their respective missions. It was an opportunity to see the inter-relatedness of our respective work.

My awareness of, and concern about, environmental issues has turned me into a political activist. Therefore, I am hopeful that we will once again embrace the mantras of the 1970s generation: Stop Pollution and Save the Earth / Waste Not, Want Not / Reduce, Reuse and Recycle / Love Mother Earth. It’s of critical importance.

AZ Humane Society Adoption Spotlight: Dexter Named after one of the most acclaimed television shows of this century, Dexter (658709) is never one to disappoint his audience with his vibrant smile and adorably mismatched ears. This cute two-year-old German Shepherd mix was surrendered to the Arizona Humane Society a little over a month ago when his previous owners were not able to care for him any longer unfortunately.

Because of his lively spirit, this sweet pup has spent a lot of time getting to know his two-legged friends while at AHS. Learning how to get his energy out with the shelter’s Behavior Team, it was found that Dexter prefers his human friends over furry ones and would do best as the only pup in the home. Dexter is a very sweet pup who absolutely loves meeting new people, getting treats and going for walks or playtime in the yard. As smart as he is cute, this adorable boy also enjoys showing off how smart he is by playing with puzzle toys and learning new tricks with rewardbased training.

“The Fitwell Dodge”

By: Johnny Hardy Throughout most of World War II, the production of automobiles and trucks was limited to the war effort. The owner of Fitwell Upholstery was one of the people who was in need of a new vehicle for his business. When the war ended, the owner of Fitwell contacted his brother, who owned an automobile dealership in southern Arizona, and mentioned that he wanted to purchase the first vehicle that was delivered to the dealership. And here is where the story begins. The 1947 Dodge Business Coupe was built and is hereby known as “The Fitwell Dodge”.

The Dodge was a familiar vehicle in Phoenix. The owner of the 1947 Dodge had his business name and a picture of his favorite dog, and himself painted on the car. He used the car in his business but also entered it in the parades that happened around Phoenix. The car was parked outside of his business, that was located on Cave Creek Road and Peoria. The fact that the automobile was parked in the business parking lot was the reason for its demise. Around 1985, two young lads, experiencing an adrenalin surge decided to race down Cave Creek Road. During the match, one of the contestants lost control and veered off into the parking lot of Fitwell Upholstery.

Unfortunately, the lad smashed into the front end of the Dodge, causing some major damage. The Dodge was moved to the backyard of a relative where it lingered for the next 32 years.

One day, while reminiscing with a buddy, I happened to mention that I was getting too old for motorcycle riding and was interested in finding an older coupe. This buddy said that he heard that the Fitwell Dodge was in the neighborhood, and if he could find it, would I be interested in it? My answer was that I didn’t want to spend any cash, but would like to trade one of my motorcycles for it. So, the hunt was on. It took my buddy about a month to find the whereabouts of the vehicle, and another month or two to make the deal. We traded a 1981 Harley Davidson XLH for the 1947 Dodge business coupe.

After digging out the car, we moved it to a shop in Phoenix called Service First. It was here that the owner, John spent the next two years searching for parts and rebuilding the car. There are a number of finishing items, such as painting, that were not done. I did not want to destroy the original owner’s intentions, and that was to advertise himself and his business. The owner of Fitwell Upholstery is long gone, but his car has a new life.

So, what does this story mean for the residents of Moon Valley? Well, the Fitwell Dodge currently resides in Moon Valley and occasionally can be seen roaming the streets. The automobile doesn’t get out much, but when it hits the road, people do take notice.

DID YOU KNOW THERE NOW ARE DRONE REGULATIONS?

BY FROST Y K ROENING Drones are really fun to fly. And there are many useful jobs they can perform that we, as flightless humans, cannot do. However, Congress made some rules to protect people from the dangers of drones. I recently heard that packages might soon be delivered using drones. Maybe that will happen. Maybe not. We will see.

City code PCC 24-49 covers the uses of drones and remote controlled planes in public parks. Arizona Revised Code 13-3729 instructs that drones cannot be flown where prohibited by federal regulations. These regulations specify not flying a drone within a five-mile radius of an airport or air control tower or after sunset. Drones cannot be flown over 400 feet high or out of the line of sight of the operator.

Also, do not fly a drone over crowds or people or vehicle traffic. In a densely populated and developed city, it is hard to find places to fly them.

Drones must be registered via the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA). Under 55 pounds is one category. Over 55 pounds is another. The registration number must be affixed to the drone itself. The drone operator also must state the reason for flying a drone. The FAA website FAA.GOV/ UAS/ provides information. Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) is the name the federal government calls drones.

Senior Recognition 2021

BY CH R I S T Y VA N D E R S E E Quiet applause filled the afternoon air as the National Charity League, Inc .(NCL) Moon Valley Chapter, celebrated their senior class. This is a long- held tradition where we gather as a chapter and say farewell and good luck to our senior Ticktockers. We also get to acknowledge their mothers and the dedication they gave not only to their daughters but also to our chapter.

This year was especially poignant as we have not been able to meet in person due to COVID. Half of our chapter was at Mountain Shadows Resort wearing masks and social distancing while half of our chapter chose to join us by Zoom.

To be able to give this gift of celebration to our girls and their mothers, who have had to miss out on so much this past year, meant everything to our chapter. The seniors wore formal gowns and were escorted by their mothers. As each individual girl walked to a stage, their amazing accomplishments both in and out of NCL were announced as well as their future ambitions. It was definitely their time to shine and they deserved it!

Our wonderful class of 2022 helped to organize the entire event and they did a fantastic job. Next year will be their turn.

Over the six years that our mothers and daughters are in the Moon Valley

Chapter they grow closer together. When this time comes to an end and they see a video of memories play across a movie screen there are always tears of happiness running down many a mom’s face. Memories that will never be forgotten as a new journey begins.

Dear WESD Partners and Community Members, With the end of the school year on the horizon, I would like to thank our community for all of your support. With your partnership, we have overcome many challenges and continue to serve our students, families and staff during these unprecedented times. It has been a long journey and we appreciate you walking by our sides during these difficult times.

WESD Students Thriving in In Person and Online Learning It has been a great fourth quarter. When I visit campuses, it is wonderful to see students in their classrooms eagerly participating and engaging with their teachers and peers. When I talk with our staff, they express how happy they are to see students’ smiling eyes and hear their excited voices.

WESD continues to practice numerous mitigation strategies to ensure the safety of our students and staff on our campuses. These include daily health screenings, the universal and correct use of masks, physical distancing, handwashing, respiratory etiquette, enhancing cleaning, maintaining healthy facilities and contact tracing in combination with isolation and quarantining.

Dear Worried, Keeping the kids busy during summer is definitely a challenge in the Arizona heat. Tech can be a great way to let kids have a blast in the nice cool indoors while they learn new stuff without even realizing it!

But first, don’t knock those video games just yet! Games like Minecraft EDU can teach kids how to code while other games use block coding to teach programming. Even just hanging out and going on a virtual adventure using VR goggles can show kids the kind of amazing things they could grow up to create. The trick is just choosing the right games. Make sure you like them, too -- even video games are way more fun when you play together!

There’s also a lot of cool tech kits out there, too - everything from robots to circuit boards! If you help your kid build a robot, make a circuit board light up. Figuring out how to make a new gadget zoom around or flash its light can keep kids busy for hours. Sure, you could go to the store and get a kit and try to figure it out yourself (and possibly step on some pieces that fall to the floor ouch!), or you could sign your kids up for a totally awesome tech camp! They’ll get to build, play and explore in a safe, supervised place while you get some time to yourself -- all without having to worry about clean up or instruction booklets!

If managing or supervising all that sounds like too much work (I’m getting a bit tired just thinking about it, honestly) you could always sign your kids up for some cool alternative summer camps. Not every camp involves building fires and hiking. A great place to find a list of all the coolest (literally) camps around is the Phoenix Moms blog’s Ultimate Guide to Summer Camps 2021.

Arizona has a thriving dairy industry and high level of milk production per cow due to its 300-plus days of sunshine and modern dairy management. Even in the hottest days of summer, dairy cows enjoy 70-degree weather under misters. Within the span of 48 hours, fresh milk is processed from milking to grocery refrigeration. The average milk production per cow is 1944 pounds per month, according to the USDA. Health Benefits of Milk and Whey Protein Milk contains essential nutrients including calcium, vitamin D, and potassium, and it’s also a good source of protein. Choosing low fat or fat-free milk over whole milk reduces calorie intake and maximize nutrient density.

An eight ounce portion of milk provides 8 grams of protein and is the equivalent of one ounce of cheese, ¼ cup cottage cheese, or ½ cup yogurt.

Dairy products include whey protein, which promotes strong bone health in children and teens. It also reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes in adults. Whey protein helps prevent muscle loss with aging when combined with resistance training.

Milk, Cheese and Yogurt Popular Among Kids School-age children are large consumers of milk. As a food service director in a large K-12 Phoenix school district, my department food budget exceeded $4,000,000 per year, and 25 percent of funds went towards purchasing milk.

Dairy products such as yogurt, cheese, and cottage cheese are nutrient-dense, readily available and versatile. During my 30-plus years as a registered dietitian in child nutrition, the frequency of entrees made from cheese increased significantly in response to student requests for meat-free menu choices.

Food Bank Supplies Milk to Community As part of its food box distribution, the PV Community Food Bank provides gallons of milk to families or evaporated canned milk to individuals.

During the pandemic last summer, families received an extra two gallons of milk, plus a 20 lb. box of fresh vegetables as part of the USDA Coronavirus Assistance Program. The food bank’s Weekend Food4Kids program includes shelf stable milk and a one-ounce cheese stick.

When compared with meat-based sources of protein, the protein in dairy foods is more economical and versatile. Consuming milk and dairy products, such as cheese and yogurt, is a convenient and easy way to add calcium, protein and other important nutrients to your diet.

A good Neighbor abides by their CCRs

If you own or rent a home, most likely your property has community rules that apply, normally called the CCRs or Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions. When a home is purchased, the CCRs are part of the giant stack of documents a new home owner signs at closing, then files, never to see the light of day again. These rules dictate property usage and are created to maintain a uniform neighborhood. Types of rules include property maintenance, house paint color, restrictions on raising farm animals, parking of boats or RVs, ensuring proper maintenance, outlining modification limitations and more. In addition to CCRs there are city ordinances that list rules for overnight parking, blight restrictions and how homes can be modified (permits). Most homes are located in a Home Owners Association or HOA that has enforcement authorization which could include fines or even a lien on your property to force compliance.

In Moon Valley proper (the jurisdiction of Moon Valley Neighborhood Association or MVNA), we have CCRs based on the community tract that you live in. The MVNA website contains a map so that you can identify your specific community then access the appropriate PDF file (one of the 29) for your community. We apologize in advance as these document scans are from the 1960s so the reading quality is subpar. You may also find copies on file with the City’s Neighborhood Services Dept. In MVNA, our all-volunteer neighbor board can only notify / advise homeowners of their obligations to abide by the CCRs. Neighbors within the same community have enforcement authorization which can be pursued thought the courts, but bringing a lawsuit against your neighbor should your last course of action. First, talk with your neighbor and ask them to bring their property into compliance – most times this is all it takes.

Washes and Drainage maintenance for flood control are an area of confusion. In Moon Valley, most washes are the responsibility of the home owners to

maintain (to keep; them clear of brush and debris), so they function well when the rains come allowing water to flow freely. This is the case where the wash is on your property as a right of way. There are a few washes which are the city of Phoenix responsibility and MVNA can help confirm.

MVNA strives to maintain a vibrant and safe Moon Valley community – our three key tenants are as follows: (1) Provide for the protection and improvement of residential properties within the Moon Valley community.

(2) Promote the health, safety, and welfare of the residents within the Moon Valley community.

(3) To have and exercise any and all powers, rights and privileges which a corporation organized under the nonprofit corporation statutes of the State of Arizona may now or here after exercise.

To this end, MVNA will engage the City when needed to drive enforcement of city regulations, otherwise advise neighbors of their responsibility to maintain their properties in accordance with the CCRs. My experience is residents want to be good neighbors, so if you approach them in a constructive way, you can settle most issues.
