The first week of March is Newspapers in Education Week, a program designed to help teachers teach and bring educational resources to the classrooms, teaching children about newspapers, how they work, and how to use them. Here we are in 2020, and still hoping that the teachers and schools take advantage of this well-established organization?

During the 2019 Superbowl, the Washington Post’s ad and its message was strong, “It’s not about journalist heroes, or that news is infallible, but rather, that we are better for having access to the news.”

Galloping Ahead with AAEC Early College High School - Paradise Valley

An unique early college high school experience What is AAEC? The Arizona Agribusiness and Equine Center (AAEC) has five campuses across the valley, and is an early college high school that offers students a different high school experience than the traditional public high schools. AAEC offers tuition free college where students have the opportunity to earn their AA degree while still in high school. In addition, students can enjoy programs such as veterinarian science, service dog training, equine, and agricultural science programs. Students also have the opportunity to travel internationally to places like South Africa, Ireland, and Costa Rica.

Lilli is among the many seniors that will graduate with her high school diploma and Associate Degree at the same time. Lilli will be attending ASU to study bio-medical engineering on a full ride scholarship.

What has been your favorite thing about AAEC-PV? “My favorite thing at AAEC-PV is the South Africa Trip by far! It was worth all the work and was an unforgettable life experience. I was able to apply things I learned at AAEC and be a wildlife vet in Africa for a week. The animals rely on us and that is a rewarding feeling!”

What has made your experience at AAEC-PV unique?

“Being able to go over to Paradise Valley Community College while in high school.

I like getting to collaborate with students from all ages and backgrounds and working with professors.”

What has been your favorite thing about AAEC-PV? “I get to finish my AA degree while in high school. AAEC pays for my college tuition so I was able to finish my AA for free. The best things is I get to be a whole two years ahead of my peers when I go to ASU. I also get to make my own schedule and pick classes that fit my career goals. This customizable scheduling allows me to have the flexibility to start working as well, so I am currently working as a tutor at PVCC.

Caroline Andrus: A Future Veterinarian

Caroline is a senior planning to go to NAU after AAEC. She decided to come to AAEC for high school after hearing a recommendation from another student.

What has made your experience at AAEC-PV unique?

“My involvement in the veterinarian program, FFA, and college. We get to work with animals and horses. Instead of reading about how to give injections, we get to go to the barn and actually give

“It’s nice that it’s such a small school environment. It’s easy to get to know the teachers in a personalized way that you can’t do in a big high school. I love that we can be around animals and love being able to work with horses everyday.”

What has been your favorite thing about AAEC-PV? “I love the equestrian and vet programs at AAEC. AAEC gave me opportunities I would never be able to have in a traditional school. I’m able to learn how to ride horses, take courses in vet science, and also finish the majority of my vet-school prerequisites at the community college while still in high school. Its so cool that AAEC pays for my college tuition. I even get to go to South Africa with school’s veterinarian science team this summer.”

Honoring A Legacy of Philanthropy

BY GINNIFER GIALLELLA Giving back is something that we all wish we could do. Many that do wish they could do more. For most of us, the thought sits on the back burner of our hectic lives. Then there’s people like Tom Londen. Tom found success at a young age, becoming president of his family insurance business after selling door to door while attending ASU for business. Over the years the company success grew far beyond its Phoenix based roots, expanding across the country and employing hundreds of agents.

In addition to his business triumphs, Tom was a selfless man who gave back tremendously and often anonymously. He spent years supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, provided scholarships to kids in need, and was so impressed by the Salvation Army’s drug rehabilitation program that he paid for one graduate to receive reconstructive dental surgery so she could search for a job with confidence. When one of his own children’s friends was struggling, he paid for a rehab program to get them back on the right track. Tom gave back, but also changed lives.

Tom was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and passed away the following year, leaving behind his wife of 26 years, five children and two granddaughters. If Tom were still alive, he would be up to eight grandchildren, with one of them just being born in February this year! His

children decided that they wanted to continue his legacy of giving, and the Tom Londen Memorial Golf Tournament was born.

This year the 6th annual Tom Londen Memorial Golf tournament will be held at Talking Stick Golf Club on April 18th, with a welcome dinner the evening before at The Scottsdale Plaza Resort that will include a silent auction, a raffle and more benefitting Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children. ACFC was founded by Chrisie Funari, a mother whose child, Ava, was diagnosed with cancer at 18 months and fought until she succumbed just shy of her 5th birthday. Chrisie promised Ava while she was still alive that she would help other kids with cancer. Keeping her promise, ACFC has assisted hundreds of Arizona families affected by pediatric cancer in many ways - such as providing emotional support, financial help, assisting with travel needs for treatment and much more.

Moon Valley Graduate Trains U.S. Navy Warfighters

BY M EG AN B R OW N , NAV Y O FFI CE O F CO M M U N I T Y O U T R E ACH Chief Petty Officer Cody Core, a native of Phoenix, joined the Navy because his grandfather served in the Korean War. “He has always been a main part of my life, helping raise us and establishing my love for water,” said Core.

Now, 10 years later, Core Photo by Mass Communication Specialist is stationed with the Center for Surface 1st Class Tim Miller Combat Systems (CSCS) San Diego, which trains sailors in the operation and maintenance of shipboard weapons and sensors.

“The training we implement at Det San Diego is an example of how Ready, Relevant Learning is shaping a more capable and lethal force,” explained Capt.

Dave Stoner, CSCS commanding officer. “Through innovative solutions, such as our Combined Integrated Air and Missile Defense and Anti-Submarine Warfare Trainer, known as CIAT and our newest, mobile combat simulator, the On Demand Trainer, we are moving away from the traditional instructor-led training at the podium and creating an immersive learning environment facilitated by an instructor that improves individual performance and in turn, shaping confident and competent sailors who know how to fight and win. To be victorious in our next fight, sailors must know how to extract every bit of warfighting capability resident in our ships.”

Core, a 2009 graduate of Moon Valley High School graduate is a fire controlman at the training center located in San Diego. “I like being stationed at CSCS because I am able to spend more time with my family, not worrying about being on the ship,” said Core. “I am responsible for my missile handling team’s proper upload and download of ordnance.”

According to Core, the values required to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Phoenix. “The way I grew up, I split between my mom and dad

every two years,” said Core. “Now, in the Navy I move somewhere every two to three years. It has helped me going everywhere and anywhere.”

With more than 90 percent of all trade traveling by sea, and 95 percent of the world’s international phone and internet traffic carried through fiber optic cables lying on the ocean floor, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity and security of the United States is directly linked to a strong and ready Navy.

CSCS is a global organization of professional military and civilian educators and support personnel focused on training the Surface Navy to fight and win.

CSCS trains over 36,000 U.S. and allied sailors a year to operate, maintain and employ weapons, sensors, communications, combat systems and deck equipment of surface warships to build Combat Ready Ships with Battle Minded Crews.

CSCS provides more than 538 courses, awards 114 different Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs), and trains more 38,000 sailors a year. The command’s mission is to develop and deliver combat systems training to achieve surface warfare superiority.

There are many opportunities for sailors to earn recognition in their command, community and careers. Core is most proud of being promoted to chief and just being able to train watch teams.

“I had to be good at my job and was evaluated on my past performances,” said Core. “There are only so many people who make chief, and I am proud to be one of them because I was graded on a lot of things.”

For Core, serving in the Navy is a tradition passed down from generations and one Core hopes to continue.

“A lot of my family has served,” said Core. “Being able to serve means giving back to the country and keeping America prosperous.”

As a member of the U.S. Navy, Core, as well as other sailors, know they are a part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs and humanitarian assistance. Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations of sailors who will follow.

“Serving in the Navy means to me family, doing what many others can’t do or are unable to and being the person who picks up the slack,” said Core.

Teen girls helping teen girls. Mothers helping mothers. Daughters and mothers working side by side to better the community, learning about themselves and each other in the process. Hope Women’s Center is just one of the philanthropic oppurtunities that National Charity League’s Moon Valley Chapter offers their members.

Susie Papadopoulis, Class 0f 2020 Hope Women’s Center is one of my favorite philanthropies. Hope Women’s Center is a place where women and teen girls in need can go to discover their true worth and value. While they are there, they are learning life skills and getting the tools they need to be successful in life.

They are given both physical and emotional support.

On Thursday evenings, they host an individual family for dinner. This is where our Moon Valley Chapter steps in. Volunteers help with various activities.

We might serve dinner and clean up, babysit, clean around the center or anything else that might need to be done.

My favorite memory from Hope Women’s Center is when my mother and I went this past summer. We made motivational cards, cleaned windows and mirrors, babysat and did crafts. It is definitely a philanthropy I will be doing again!

NCL, Inc. is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong mother-daughter relationships through community service, leadership development and cultural experiences.

Members include girls ranging from 7th to 12th grade along with their mothers.

Mothers and Daughters Serving Communities Together

The boys team charity initiative for the 2019-2020 year is “Feed the Hungry” and for January’s general meeting all the classes came together and chipped in to do just that. Each class was responsible to collect an assigned set of non perishable food items. Class of 2020 collected 174 boxes of Mac’n Cheese, Class of 2021 collected 115 cans of Spaghetti O’s and soups, Class of 2022 collected 56 jars of peanut butter and 31 jars of jelly, Class of 2023 collected 34 boxes of pasta and 39 jars of sauce, Class of 2024 collected 115 cans of tuna and chicken, class of 2025 collected 558 boxes of granola and breakfast bars. All the food was picked up and taken to Homeward Bound, a non profit that provides pathways out of poverty for homeless families ready to make a change.

Throughout the year we have been keeping this initiative at the front of our minds and adding small things that will hopefully have a huge impact. We have a few more months to really drive the mission home.

In addition to the food drive, we also had a very impactful speaker from Not My Kid, Antu, join us to keep the conversation going regarding prescription drug abuse and more. It was great to hear from a young adult about the power of making healthy choices and positive influences. boys team charity is a volunteer service organization dedicated to developing an altruistic spirit in young men through active participation of parents and sons in philanthropic projects in their communities. Rookie Mom: What It’s Like to Be a Mom with a Mental Illness B Y B R I G H I D C O N S TA B L E I think the biggest surprise during my time as a new mom was being diagnosed with bipolar II disorder.

It has also been my biggest shame.

When I do “come out” and am open with close friends as managing bipolar disorder, they write it off as understandable: “You need medicine for diabetes.”

Sure, that kind logic makes sense, but the experience behind having a mental illness is bigger than that analogy.

And, I really wish it could be easy. Yet in my case, all the hats that I carry -- mother, wife, teacher, etc. -- are truly yanked one way and then the other, expending my energy that can easily snap into a manic high or a depressive low.

Having bipolar II means, that for me, I need my energy to be focused towards the things that matter the most. It needs to be stabilized, because again, I can spiral with really high energy that concludes with weeks-long crash. Only to start the “stabilizing” cycle again.

Not to mention the medications managing bipolar. It’s a hit-and-miss trial that takes weeks, months, or years to decide if the medication is working or not. (For me, it took about 8 months, but we’re planning for kid two, so now it’s a process of tapering off the medication that is not safe for pregnancy.)

So, imagine trying to raise a small child, getting sleep to avoid mania, and then teaching 140 high school freshmen. It’s beyond resilient-making, if I can even call it that.

And, it’s a frustrating balance to keep.

Obviously, the energy that matters the most is my family, especially helping to raise our now 3-year-old daughter. I want to be present for every moment, but when I get those “low energy” moments, I know to take time to rejuvenate myself and not feel guilty about it.

Second is keeping the relationship with my husband both romantic and one of friendship and partnership. As my husband directly describes what it’s like to be married to someone with bipolar disorder: “It can be challenging because you don’t know how you can help the other person. Or sometimes there’s nothing you can do to help.”

And of course, how I maintain a living to help keep our home, cars, bills steady is my job. This is where it can get draining -- all aspects take a lot of time and energy to balance.

Honestly, the best advice to get me through the day is, “Showing up is 99% success.” It works.

Because even though I’d love for the emotions behind my moods to be steady, it’s just not. And I can’t feel bad about it because it’s my chemistry, but it’s a struggle meant for discipline in routine.

Yet, as a mom, I do feel bad. I wonder if my daughter will be diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

But, then I think, well, if I’m conscious about my medicine, therapy, exercise, and self-care, I’d be a good role model on how to manage it.

So next time anyone, mother or not, connects with you enough to relate about their mental health journey, just thank them for telling you, ask how you can help, and be one-thousand percent kinder than the average person.

History Book: Very Lovingly Yours, Elsie

BY FROST Y K ROENING Arizona history is so varied and interesting. Women tell fascinating tales of adventure, freedom, exploration, friendship, and service. Elsie Reed Hayes is a school teacher in Cornville and Williams. She is an independent woman not given to marrying the first man who woos her. She loves children, even the ones who challenge her. She forms close relationships with students, their parents, and others in the wilds of Arizona. Her granddaughter, Barbara Anne Waite, used her journals and letters to write the story of a three-year period of her life as a teacher. 1913-1916. Elsie’s tales are pertinent today.

The story of Elsie also is a love story, a heart-breaker and a sweet romance.

Elsie has a lot to think about and do. She talks in her journals about food. The people then ate a LOT of home-made candy and cakes! And they drank water out of rivers and had to walk long ways to obtain it. They forded streams and found themselves in many interesting pickles.

In 1912 there were trains and primitive planes and only a few cars. I found it fun that people walked a lot and rode horses. Suitors were expected to help their prospective brides with household chores like bringing in wood for stoves and doing dishes. Laundry seemed to be never-ending. Sewing and

mending, too, as there were no ready-made clothes. Imagine having clothes fit you perfectly because they were made just for you! Teachers were expected to wear skirts three inches above the ankle and of muted colors. They were not to encourage suitors.

I loved this story. It was fast moving. People in the early 1900s visited each other constantly and kept track of one another. And, there were performances and everyone sang and danced. Where has all that gone? I guess TV has taken over. Maybe it is time to put TV aside and get back to real community. Moon Valley is famous for visiting. In our neighborhood people walk and talk and one man keeps his garage door open and he works on things there and greets us. Sweet! Can we find more ways to visit, talk, sing, and dance (sometimes until all hours of the night)? When we become bored with TV, will we return to visiting with each other regularly? The children in this story really enjoyed interacting with parents and grandparents. I enjoyed the vision of those relationships.

The Secure Act & Planning for Your Retirement Accounts

A new law governing beneficiaries of your retirement accounts could create a tax disaster or result in large distributions to beneficiaries (like minors, young adults and irresponsible heirs) who are ill-equipped to manage the funds.

That law, the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act (SECURE Act) became effective January 1, 2020. The law may upset your estate plan because the Act requires most designated beneficiaries (other than spouses) to withdraw the entire balance of your retirement account within ten years of inheriting the account.

For anyone who has their trust as the beneficiary of their retirement account, it is imperative to have a trust review and evaluate the options for their beneficiaries.

What changed with the SECURE ACT? Under the old law, all beneficiaries of inherited retirement accounts could stretch out distributions over their individual life expectancy. That meant a beneficiary could grow the asset for their own retirement, taking smaller distributions usually over a long time period, resulting in lower taxes over time. Under the SECURE Act, most beneficiaries must withdraw the entire IRA over a period of ten years. That shorter ten-year time frame for taking distributions will result in the acceleration of income tax due. It means the beneficiaries may be bumped into a higher income tax bracket, thus receiving less of the funds contained in the retirement account than you may have originally anticipated, and certainly paying more in taxes.

What are the exceptions to the ten-year withdrawal rule?

The SECURE Act does provide a few exceptions to this new mandatory ten-year withdrawal rule. First and most important for married couples: your spouse may still rollover

your IRA. Disabled or chronically ill beneficiaries also may stretch withdrawals over their life expectancy. Your minor children may stretch the distributions based on their life expectancy until they reach the age of majority (or if they continue in school, for some period after that). Thereafter, they too are subject to the ten-year withdrawal time frame. (And by the way, that applies only to your children, not your grandchildren!)

What the SECURE Act means for you and your estate plan What does this mean for you and your estate plan? First, it’s clear that a proper analysis of your estate planning goals and planning for your intended beneficiaries is very important.

You need a review to be sure your goals are still going to be accomplished and that you have properly planned for your beneficiaries.

Parents with minor children often make the trust for their children the beneficiary of retirement plans. The same is true for people whose beneficiaries are not responsible adults, have special needs, or are otherwise unable to handle their own finances. For anyone in this category, it is imperative to have a trust review and evaluate the options for their beneficiaries. A trust created while the old law was in place took into account the ability to stretch the distributions out over a beneficiary’s lifetime. With that option eliminated, those trust provisions could now result in a tax disaster, or in large distributions to beneficiaries ill-equipped to manage the funds.

What steps you should take next If your trust is one of the beneficiaries of your retirement plan, you should have a review of your situation to determine whether your trust needs to be amended and to consider what the best options are for beneficiary designations for your retirement accounts. If you have a Standalone Retirement Trust, get an appointment promptly, as you may well need to amend that trust. If you don’t, you may want to establish a Retirement Trust. It can be a great way to preserve the distributions from your IRA for your beneficiaries.

For those who have adults designated as their trust beneficiaries, the passage of the SECURE Act may still affect your overall estate planning.

For instance, if you have charitable contributions in your plan, we may wish to change how the charities receive their share. If your grandchildren are receiving some share of your estate, then you may want to make changes in where those distributions come from.

Just as important, if your situation has changed at all, you should have a review of your estate plan. I recommend a review at least every three years.

North Valley Symphony Orchestra Presents “Women in Music”

Join NVSO as we recognize the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage by performing music written by women, Saturday, March 14, 7:00 p.m. at North Canyon High School Performing Arts Center, 1700 E. Union Hills Drive, Phoenix, 85024. These talented composers do not receive as much recognition as their male counterparts but are equally talented.

NVSO Music Director Kevin Kozacek said that, “We are delighted to perform three works by woman composers on this concert. The idea to showcase women in music came from the fact that this concert season coincides with the 100th anniversary of woman’s suffrage in America. In 1919 congress passed the 19th Amendment, and the states finished ratification in 1920. NVSO is excited to feature three very successful composers at our March 14th concert. Amy Beach’s Symphony in E Minor was written in 1894 and was the first symphony composed and published by a female American composer. The symphony employs numerous English, Irish, and Scottish melodies, so Beach subtitled the work the Gaelic Symphony. Audience members will enjoy the folklike feeling evoked by the piece. Cécile Chaminade was a French composer, and we will perform a suite of four movements from her ballet Callirhoë, written in 1888. The piece is rich with playful melodies and motifs, and easy to visualize ballerinas dancing to the music. Last, Joan Tower is a current American composer that just this year was awarded the annual Gold Baton award from the League of American Orchestras for her contribution to the field of orchestral music. Other recipients include Bernstein, Copland, and John Williams. The featured piece Sixth Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman was written in 2014, the sixth in a series of pieces that Tower has written to celebrate the risk-takers, or uncommon women of today. I’m proud of NVSO for dedicating this concert as a celebration of women in music and hope that many community members will attend the unique event.”

Walnuts aren’t just any other healthy snack; they’re particularly beneficial when it comes to gastrointestinal and heart health, suggests research. That makes walnuts a health promoter extraordinaire!

Here’s why, according to recent research published in the Journal of Nutrition, a peer-reviewed publication of the American Society for Nutrition.

The study randomly assigned adults with cardiovascular risk factors (elevated body-mass index, blood pressure and LDL cholesterol) to one of three groups for comparison: a diet containing whole walnuts, which are naturally high in α-linolenic acid, ALA); a fatty-acid-matched diet without walnuts; or a diet that replaced ALA with oleic acid without walnuts. (The latter two diets essentially substituted the ALA in walnuts with vegetable oils.)

Before the trial began and after dietary intervention (each participant consumed all three diets for six weeks apiece, with breaks in between), researchers assessed gut microbiota and other variables to determine which diet had best influenced healthy gut bacteria and CVD risk factors.

The winner: the walnut diet.

Specifically, eating walnuts appeared to increase several species of gut bacteria (“healthy” or “good” bacteria), which correlated with improvements in blood pressure, total cholesterol, and non-HDL cholesterol. Just as significantly, there was no correlation between gut bacteria and CVD risk factors based on pursuing the other two diets.

Renting vs. Buying (the ol’ Debate) T H E W R I T E S T U F F BY G E R R Y J O H N S O N Over the past seven years that I have been writing these articles, I have expounded many times extolling the benefits of buying a home rather than renting.

To be clear, I haven’t changed my mind. However, I read an interesting article in the January, 2020 edition of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine by Miriam Cross, entitled “When Renting Is Better Than Buying.”

She made several good points, the first of which is that many millennials buy a home simply because that is what they are supposed to do. The prevailing wisdom has it that renting is “just throwing money away.”

Miriam suggests that if you cannot see five to seven years down the road, perhaps renting is the better option. I ask if owning a home would prevent you from taking that great promotion and moving to another city, or moving to Hawaii on a whim, or making a lifestyle change that a homeowner normally wouldn’t make?

“Sticker Shock” about the costs of actually buying a home can be another detriment. This is a laymen’s point of view. Actually, all the costs and fees are well laid out several times before one can close on a purchase. Miriam uses the term “blindsided” when referring to property taxes. I don’t know of any lender that will allow property taxes and homeowners insurance not to be impounded.

The buyer knows well in advance of making any commitment to buy, in fact, well in advance of making any cash outlay, what the costs will be, thus they can make a reasoned decision.

Miriam also talks about private mortgage insurance which is charged on all FHA loans, and on conventional loans when you put less than 20% down.

Again, this is disclosed well in advance.

Buying in high priced areas may prove prohibitive. An entry level worker is Silicon Valley is not going to be able to buy a home. She mentions San Jose, San Francisco, Honolulu, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Oakland and Anaheim as highpriced cities. I might add New York City and Washington D.C. I concede that renting may prove to be the only alternative if you want to live and work in these areas.

She purports the strategy of taking your down payment and the difference between rent and a mortgage payment and investing them in diversified portfolio, whereby they would accumulate more wealth than a homeowner. Every source I’ve consulted, shows rents as being higher than or equivalent to mortgage

payments. Appreciation and the interest deduction are key ingredients to wealth accumulation. In fact, homeownership is the backbone of any successful investment program.

So, I get it if you just don’t want to be saddled by the burdens of homeownership. Many millennials feel this way. Just drive into downtown Phoenix along Third Street and look at all of the new apartment complexes springing up. I get it if a job change to another city may be a strong possibility in the next few years.

I get it if you live in a very high-priced market, these are all good reasons to rent, but Phoenix is not that market.

If you are well planted in the Phoenix area, with a job that is not likely to require a move, buying a home makes sense. Frankly, even if you may have to move in a few years, starter homes are selling like hotcakes, many in under a week. If you have to move to Boston, at least you will have a nice little nest egg to help you get established.

Miriam’s perspective may be colored by the fact that she lives in Washington D.C. I bet if she moved to Phoenix, she would hop on the homeownership bandwagon. It’s a great strategy for Phoenix.

March 23rd through March 30th, this amazing group of 80 youth from 17 different countries will visit Phoenix after many other communities throughout the US and before heading to Canada and Europe on their world tour. The cast will spend the week sharing their diversity with local schools like Lookout Mountain Elementary and volunteering with diverse non-profit organizations In the area.

“I was given the opportunity to travel with Up With People in 1989-90 with an international cast of over 100 student. In each community we stayed with host families that opened their homes, hearts and cultures. This exchange was life changing for me. I am so excited the UWP is coming to our community of Moon Valley!” Jodi Peruch of Homesmart Up with People’s cast will end the week by performing their professional musical show at the Mesa Arts Center on Friday March 27th at 7pm. All proceeds from tickets sales will go to VAST (Valley Against Sex Trafficking); which provides resources for local law enforcement agencies throughout Arizona.

Jill Rich also travelled with Up With People in 1984 and is mother to Grace Rich who is currently touring with Up with People. “Grace went into Up With People right out of High School at Thunderbird. The world view, people she has met and charitable organizations she has served, created a place for her to gain maturity beyond her years and an ability to be present to the heart of human kindness outside of race, religion, social economics etc. It is what we want for our children.”

We would like to invite the Moon Valley community to experience hosting a cast member for that week. This group of amazing young people, committed to improving the world, stays with local host families wherever they go. This allows participants and community members to connect and to have an incomparable international experience. Host families are thanked by being given two tickets to the show to complete their stay!

These are the chapters of our lives (great country music song by Brett Young) that led me and Laurie to specialize in Moon Valley real estate.

Chapter One: YES! Laurie and I really are Cousins. Our moms are twins, we grew up together in the midwest and moved to Phoenix together over 35 years ago. For years in Phoenix, I was a practicing attorney and Laurie was a real estate broker.

Next Chapter: I lived in the east valley and, my soon to be husband, Louie, lived in the west valley. After we married, we decided to find a home somewhere in between the two areas until we could get back to the east valley. One fateful day while looking for neighborhoods in the North Phoenix area, we were driving on Greenway and saw the Pulte homes being built on 7th Ave and Greenway. We didn’t know the area and didn’t know anything about Moon Valley, but agreed that it was a good location until we could move to the east valley.

Next Chapter: Our son was born and we brought him home to our newly built Pulte home. It didn’t take us long to realize that Moon Valley was a hidden gem and we no longer had any desire to get to the east valley. We would never be able to find such a beautiful, close-knit friendly and neighborly community with great schools, activities AND CHRISTMAS LIGHTS! We continue to enjoy everything Moon Valley uniquely has to offer including tennis, golf and social activities at Moon Valley Country Club. Now, over 30 years later and with our grandchildren now being raised here, we count our blessings that we drove down Greenway that fateful day!

Next Chapter: After retiring from practicing law and raising my family, I went into real estate. Laurie and I decided to partner together. With my legal background and our extensive real estate knowledge, we quickly developed a thriving real estate business in the Valley with special focus on the areas we live and love: Moon Valley and Westbrook Village (where Laurie lives).

Next Chapter: Now, we are excited to add another “cousin”, Susan’s husband Louie Mukai. Louie is co-owner of the CPA firm, Mukai, Greenlee & Co, and has been a CPA for over 40 years. He soon will be retiring and recently obtained his real estate license.

With his addition, we have every aspect of real estate covered for you: exceptional real estate knowledge and experience coupled with extensive legal and tax backgrounds.

With a gentle smile and big personality, Bruce is an adorable boy with lots of adorable antics. The two-year-old Labrador Retriever mix was rescued as an injured stray by the Arizona Humane Society the day before New Year’s, one of the biggest times of the year for pets to get lost. After about a month of recovery in AHS’ animal trauma hospital, Bruce got the pep in his step back in no time!

A perfect example of a life saved thanks to the community’s support through fostering, volunteering, donations and adoption, Bruce is hoping to be an AHS alum with an active family that does not mind his idea of being a lap dog. Feeling blue? Got the blues? Yes, blue often has been coupled with sadness, therefore people prone to melancholy should be cautious in its use. Blue is a cool, recessive color, lacking vitality. While red is powerful and yellow is energetic blue is relaxing; it is calming and soothing. Here, in the southwest, it has the ability to mitigate the intensity of the sun in western and southern exposures and provide a balance of cool and heat.

Adding white, making a tint, softens pure blue and produces the tones of the sky evoking airy-ness and serenity. Adding black, making a masculine shade, yields navy that provides stability and mystery (akin to the still, depths of the ocean).

Want a bit more energy? Mix some yellow into blue—only a bit more added to the color of the sky will make aqua, the color of the Caribbean Sea, evoking warm, sunny days with a sense of relaxation. Imbibe yellow into Navy producing teal—still manly but more friendly. Red added to pastel blue is lavender, gives it an ethereal, more spiritual tone to the feminine. Whereas red, added to navy, becomes eggplant, a manly, powerful, rich, royal or even god-like color.

Moving toward the neutral, with a pinch of orange, the mystery of navy is enhanced. It is the color of the deep, roiling, North Atlantic. It congers up the sense of a man who is complex, powerful and compelling. Yet, a dab of orange added to lavender enhances the spirituality of the female, conjuring a more “earth-mother-medicine-woman” sense.

Now that we have explored a bit about color and how it can evoke a sense of the personality, the question always is: how can a color palette be created and how can one know how light or dark a color truly is? Next month I will explore both of those issues.

Tires have been getting bigger ever since. New ways to manufacturer and lighter materials have help make this leap but you still have to pedal the extra weight.

Antibiotics in Dentistry

BY D R . M E L A N I E S I M C H A K H U L L , D D S Millions of people take antibiotics prior to receiving dental care and others are prescribed antibiotics after treatment is performed. Reasons for taking these medications vary from concerns about potential infections of previously damaged heart valves and recent prosthetic joint replacements as well as a hedge against infections after oral surgery. While this has been common practice for decades, there is a mounting concern that is altering the guidelines.

Antibiotic resistance—when bacteria no longer respond to antibiotics—is a growing problem. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 2 million people in the U.S. become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 people die each year as a direct result of these infections.

Improving understanding of how antibiotics work will be helpful in preventing the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Education regarding the responsible use of antibiotics will help medical professionals identify the circumstances when antibiotics are indicated, choose the right antibiotic and prescribe it at the right dose for the right duration.

The American Dental Association has determined, for patients with prosthetic joint implants, prophylactic antibiotics are not generally recommended prior to dental procedures to prevent prosthetic joint infection. Several cardiac conditions that used to require antibiotics no longer meet the criteria for premedication.

Currently, there is no widely adopted consensus among healthcare professionals regarding antibiotic use in dentistry. In our office we see a wide range of opinions that vary from one medical specialty to the next.

For patients who were told at some point, possibly years ago, they required antibiotics, it is prudent to follow up with the medical profession who made that recommendation. The rules may have changed and premedication may no longer be necessary. Let’s use antibiotics only when absolutely necessary.

SUPER LICE! No, this is not some cool new superhero.....

BY ASHLEY HOLLER My child has lice. Now what? Super lice are now present in over 96% of cases nationwide. This means that the traditional treatments you purchase will have no effect on killing lice. There has been a rise of lice infestations due to parents trying to treat at home with no success, and therefore allowing more opportunities for it to spread. Don’t waste your money on multiple drug store treatments, and hours of your time, only to end up failing, and calling in a professional anyway. You can spend just a little more to have it treated professionally, and in as little as one hour. Having a guaranteed lice free head will halt the process of spreading lice to others.

One Friday afternoon a family reached out in desperation. I was able to get out to them and treat both daughters in about two and a half hours. They had just found out that day the girls had lice, and were due to get on a plane at 4:00am for vacation the next day! Calling me and eradicating their lice completely, allowed them to keep their trip plans, and go feeling confident they did not have to think about lice. I also had a mother reach out to me, after two weeks of endless at home treatments. As I arrived and inspected her daughter’s head, there were many nits and live bugs. Mom had just did a treatment the night prior.

She had also caught lice herself, likely due to the fact she was constantly treating for the past two weeks. They had a case of super lice that they just could not beat.

I was able to stop the lice in their tracks and mom and daughter were lice free that morning!

So what’s the next step? If you have a case of lice, we need to get together immediately. I am fully mobile and will come to you, working with your schedule. I am a momma myself of four kiddos, and I can feel your pain when a lice infestation sets in. It is a stressful experience, but I fortunately relieve all that stress.

Set those Goals Baby, and Be the best you that you want to be. B Y H A N A R U Z S A Dr. Grover has been a staple in Moon Valley since 2000 when he opened Moon Valley Chiropractic. I fortunately got to meet him recently as he has rejoined our amazing community, setting up shop once again at Moon Valley Chiropractic after a successful stint in Prescott.

Now I’ve been to see a chiropractor before - I used to have a subscription at one of those walk-in-walk-out places. I obviously enjoyed it, but sometimes I did not like how “quick” an adjustment was, or that I wasn’t really listened to. So I cancelled that service. But then comes in Dr. Grover. He’s helped over 14,000 folks just like me who have certain aches and pains, and he focuses on what is truly needed for me. I have this lovely issue of hunching over my laptop all the time, and post-baby body gets that sciatica pain!

Do you want to know what really got me in the door though? Dr. Grover’s passion for healing emotions too. Here’s a bit about what I’m referring to: “Ten years ago, I got certified in “Touch for Health.” This is a method to easily clear negative emotions that get buried in the subconscious. These emotions have a powerful effect in how we respond to life. That negative voice keeps you from being all you were meant to be,” explains Dr. Grover.

These emotions can cause: anxiety, fear of failure, colitis, weight gain, phobias, etc. I have struggled with anxiety, depression, I have bouts of stressinduced colitis, and yep, there are times where I don’t love myself fully. So why not find another way to help those aspects out?

Your body has a nervous system (Anatomy 101 anyone?) which acts as a circuit breaker - you have electricity flowing through (for lack of a better analogy) and there are times when you blow a fuse and need to head on out to the breaker box and flip that fuse right back. That is what Dr. Grover is doing. He’s just flipping that fuse by doing spinal treatment and the like. And boy oh boy, has it HELPED. Skeptical? Please don’t be.

I respect that as Americans, we can be jaded about anything “new” especially when it comes to mental health or medicine. Can a non-pill function truly work?

For me, I have seen immense improvement. After my appointments, I have my homework where I reiterate my affirmation: “I feel that I truly love and trust myself.” Even IF you don’t believe in the circuit breaker, at the very least coming away with a beautiful phrase to support yourself is a GOOD THING. “This type of approach is also great for goal setting. When in my office, we identify something you want to work on. We find where that fuse is turned off, turn it back on, and then you have your positive statement to focus on throughout the week.” Dr. Grover I loved the goal setting idea too, so now we’re working of me achieving my goals and aspirations (that follow-through baby!) I am certainly not the first person to have benefitted from Dr. Grover’s “Touch for Health” approach, and I hope I will not be the last. Do you feel like you can benefit from this? Moon Valley Neighborhoods: Hillcrest IX

BY JULIE PEK Recently I helped a client purchase a home in Hillcrest IX. Located north of Hearn between 12th and 14th Street, this community has about 130 single family homes. Builder Dell Trailor developed it and the nearby Gold Key Homes in the 1980’s. Almost everyone in the community has a view of Lookout Mountain.

“It’s a peaceful community,” said Kathy, who’s been living there for the past 11 years. “And the neighbors are what make this place so special.” Kathy volunteers with the self-managed homeowners association, and is the founder of the Sunshine Committee. When someone new moves into the community, she and her committee visit and brings them helpful information in a pretty gift basket. “I lived in the Midwest, and I remember a welcome wagon representative coming to my house. It was natural for me to start that concept here,” she said.

Hillcrest IX neighbors look out for each other via an organized block watch, and they come together for social events. Planning is underway for the annual fall picnic which brings everyone out. Folks hike along the paved walkway and sometimes get together for potluck. Monthly newsletters, association information and CC&Rs can be found on their website.

There’s definitely a strong connection between the neighbors here. And that’s why Kathy chose peaceful Hillcrest IX. A Moon Valley Gem!

Happy 2020 and welcome to our first quarterly newsletter for this year. Time flies for all us, but it’s time to renew your 2020 MVNA membership by paying your annual dues. Security fees were increased to $120 so that we can expand coverage; then add the $30 of MVNA dues totals a $150 bill for the entire year of 2020. A great value, better than any HOA!! It’s easiest if you can pay online (easier for you and us). If you have not paid on line before, it will ask you to setup a new user name / account. Also, I ask for patience if you have paid but still receive an auto renewal notice – it does take a bit of time for your all volunteer board to post the off-line payments and to mail out the security stickers for 2020.

March is our community wide yard/garage sale time - Saturday, March 7th MVNA held its annual public meeting on January 8th at Moon Valley Country Club. Our City of Phoenix Mayor, The Honorable Kate Gallego attended and proclaimed January 8, 2020 as Moon Valley Day! It was great for the Mayor to recognize the unique history and character of our Moon Valley community. Deb Stark (our city Council Representative) spoke of the progress in street paving with a plan to get 7th street repaved in 2020. It was also noted that the water pipeline project sponsored by MVCC, The Pointe and The City was also completed in 2019.

Both spoke about city growth and the challenges our city faces. These include: the

growing homeless situation in parts of the city, removal of red-light cameras and how to control speeding, just adopted new rules regarding Airbnb to limit neighborhood disruptions from “party house” events, and support for continued independent and affordable living for our seniors.

The Black Mountain Police Precinct representative spoke to the issues affecting our community and how the police is using data to better position patrols. There continues to be city support to expand the police force, with more recruits at the academy to bring more “motors” to our streets for traffic safety management and be more responsive to resident needs.

The Holiday Food for Lights campaign raised more than 2,600 pounds of food donated to the Desert Mission Food Bank – led by Ron Wyckmans. Other board members were noted for helping renew our website, bring an on-line dues payment option, coordination of community events like yard sales, GAIN and candle packing / distribution, bike lanes and signs and more.

14-year-old Jacob Bagley to Emcee Veteran’s Fundraiser

Jacob Bagley, 14, left his interview with World War II veteran John Roberts knowing he had just been a part of something special.

“He’s from a totally different generation and time period than me, so it was really cool to feel all that wisdom as I was talking with him, because he just he knows so much more than me,” Bagley says.

An eighth-grader at Shea Middle School, Bagley interviewed Roberts through his school’s chapter of Veterans Heritage Project (VHP). Through this civics education course, students conduct indepth interviews with veterans about their wartime experiences, which they then compile and publish annually in the book Since You Asked.

It’s cathartic for veterans as they share their wisdom, and educational for

students as they learn firsthand lessons in history, civics, and leadership.

Bagley’s outstanding communication skills – especially for someone so young – led him to be selected as the master of ceremony at VHP’s Saluting Stories of Service fundraising gala on March 7th, where he will not only be introducing this year’s Storyteller Award recipient, Retired Air Force Colonel Tom Kirk, but also special guest Barbara Barrett, Phoenix native and 25th Secretary of the Air Force.

“It’s going to be crazy to get to meet someone so high up in the federal government, which is [a career] I’m really interested in,” he says.

I have mentioned before that many people think I’m a great cook and that this always surprised me because I didn’t enjoy cooking. Lately I have found that I do and it came as a shock. I realized that going Paleo and losing weight three years ago was probably the beginning. There was a direct correlation between what I made in the kitchen and what went into my body; creating a smaller, healthier version of me that made this my new hobby. The shopping part is still not my favorite, but probably because I never seem to remember everything I need in one trip, even if I make a meticulous list. I either leave it at home or lose it in the store and have to make several trips in one week!

I have a very small friend who I’ve gotten more ideas from than any one person. You’d never know from looking at Gwen that she’s so handy in the kitchen. Some of the things I’ve learned may be no-brainers to her and the rest of you, but I was raised by a very undomesticated woman. My mom took great pride in that label. She hated grocery shopping and cooking more than anything, but could she clean! If we were out of milk, we had our cereal with water and if we were out of food in general, we’d have canned beef broth or rice and milk/water, sprinkled with sugar. So it should come as no surprise that I didn’t know one could and should cut up the broccoli stalk with the florets. It’s just as tasty and nutritious. Peeling a banana before you freeze it is much easier and less painful than afterwards. I complained to Gwen one day that my hands were so frozen they hurt. She looked at me like I was an alien and told me that the trick is to peel the banana first! Who knew!?!? And there’s more! George and Gwen save glass bottles because they aren’t recycled anymore (I didn’t know that) and pour the animal fat into them before putting into the trash. I’ve just been dumping it into the trash, but had to wait for it cool enough first. I also learned that if an avocado is cut open too soon, it can be kept from browning by turning it face down until it’s needed. Gwen is the one I got the Popsicle idea from. Our lawn crew and mail carrier really appreciate them on a hot day.

She makes the best green chili pork I’ve ever had, so she had me over to watch how she did it and then return to eat it that night with Gary! Mine turned out too mushy because I didn’t sear the meat first and was adding water to the crockpot. I am big on short cuts; get it done and move on to the next thing.

Apparently there are some steps that shouldn’t be skipped.

I am not a total doofus. I’ve learned what it means to ‘temper’ the butter and have improved many of my dishes by reading websites and watching cooking shows. I’ve changed recipes to suit our tastes and recreated Cinnabon Cinnamon Rolls. . . almost to perfection-except that now I don’t eat sugar and

gluten-so I forgot how. I wear an apron to protect my clothes, because I’m a messy cook. Gwen said, “I thought they were just for looks!” as her seared pork butt was sizzling and spewing flicks of grease. I am an amazing baker. . . so I am told, probably because I used to love baked goods (I still do, I just don’t indulge). I bake for the men I love and apparently I still ‘have it’ though I rarely taste test to be sure. My mom couldn’t cook or bake. I never complained because I liked to eat, no matter how badly it tasted. The only time we got baked goods in my house was during the holidays and it smelled sooo good, even if it didn’t taste so good. Of all the Christmas cookie recipes my mom passed down, I have used two and I changed both of them to taste better. It shouldn’t be an insult to change recipes that have been shared though.

Amy showed me that brussel sprouts can actually taste good and as a result, I make them all the time now, with some modifications. Todd and Leslie turned us onto the best side and seasoning to compliment tequila, Ashley’s fire fighter husband Bruce, shared his pasta recipe years ago and it’s one I fall back on all the time. Pam, who is always trying new recipes, freely shares her wisdom and tips with me too, though she is quite the connoisseur; way out of my league and over my head. There have been some of her recipes though that became part of our traditions like Christmas Morning 24 hr. Omelette, not to mention her Lebanese rice and shrimp cocktail sauce!

I record a recipe I like by listing the person’s name with it so that I can remember who I got it from. My cousin’s potato dish is to die for and everyone loves it, but on my recipe card I label it as “Vicki’s Potato Dish” even though she probably got it from a friend. I do a lot of experimenting and cutting out ideas from the paper. I’ve actually gotten more recipes from the Az Republic than anywhere else and they’ve all been keepers.

When our boys were young they weren’t too keen on trying out new things and I was too tired to care, so I made the same things over and over.

That’s a recipe for boredom. They ate what I cooked and that was that, but complaints wore on me. Regardless, I still made ‘stuffed bell peppers’ every few months because I knew that one day they would love them like I learned to… and they did. Once they started moving out, I had more time and started venturing into more flavors and found I really liked making things from scratch.

As long as I wasn’t doubling or tripling the recipe to feel our walking garbage disposals, I didn’t feel too bad if I had to throw away any failures. This would require yet another trip to the grocery store, and that is still not fun.
