BY C H R I S T I N E PAT T O N When Arizona Governor, Doug Ducey, first rolled out the state motto above, it was hard to imagine how the National Charity League, Inc. Moon Valley Chapter (NCL) would continue to stay connected and serve our community. While service hours have been significantly impacted, due to the current pandemic, unique opportunities have arisen and some of our community partners have found ways to adapt and continue to reach out to those in need.

One of those organizations is “The Joy Bus”. This 100% non-profit business was established to help serve a vulnerable population in our community – homebound cancer patients. Founded in 2011 and named in honor of Joy, the founder’s dear friend who lost her life to cancer, The Joy Bus continues to deliver essential meals, groceries, and small gifts to patients who depend on this delivery service to minimize health risks. Although funding and donations have been affected (the Joy Bus Diner that helps fund the organization is temporarily closed) the Joy Bus recognizes the need to help homebound individuals more than ever. However, there has been no shortage of volunteers. This continues to be one of the most popular service opportunities within our chapter and in the greater Phoenix community. It certainly feels good to make a difference outside of our individual families but instead as a Moon Valley chapter in whatever way we can.

As I arrived to take pictures of Gwen Gardner and her daughter Bailee, who were waiting to pick up food for their assigned customer delivery, I was so impressed by the line-up of masked individuals taking time out of their day to serve others. The Diner was bustling with volunteers who were filling brightly decorated bags and getting a small, special treat parceled out for each “customer”.

Everyone was happy and eager to help and it even got me out of the stay at home funk that seems to ebb and flow on any given day. I feel so appreciative to have this opportunity to write about this wonderful organization. There was a tangible joy that I witnessed and felt as the staff cheerfully greeted and enthusiastically interacted with the volunteers. Shouting out hellos and offering small tokens of thanks for showing up to help. The warm and welcoming personalities were matched by the bright surroundings and neatly packaged delivery bags.

As Gwen and I chatted about our positive experience doing work with our daughters at the Joy Bus, she commented on how it is a bit different during this pandemic. In earlier months, Gwen and her daughter would sit and talk with a customer one on one to provide them not only with food, but emotional nourishment and encouragement through a short visit and friendly conversation. Because it is too risky to have close contact with a cancer patient at this time, the delivery is now limited to a no-contact drop off with a friendly wave, an encouraging handwritten note, and a hello from afar. Yet, this new normal is equally satisfying, knowing that the mission of The Joy Bus continues to be accomplished and keeps us connected with those most in need.

NCL, Inc. is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong mother-daughter relationships through community service, leadership development, and cultural experiences. Members include girls ranging from 7th to 12th grade along with their mothers. July 2020, a year to go down in history. As summer ramps up, it is very sad that the country is in shut down and isolation due to the extremely dangerous times we are in.

Those of you that know me, know that my glass is always half full (unless it’s really good wine!!), but in these days and times it’s hard to keep that attitude going. The crazy world around us, is affecting everyone, from young to old, every generation.

I think the most prevalent problems are isolation, loneliness and high anxiety.

These are things I have never known, experienced or even sometimes understood.

But as the world has changed around us, these feelings are so real.

So, in thinking of how to survive, I have decided to work on sharing some ideas with you on how to overcome, substitute, and conquer these feelings. up that phone and call, hearing your voice is so much better 1 Pick than that ding of a text. a roll of stamps, a real live paper note is so very special, think 2 Buy of how many you have stuffed in a drawer from decades ago. as much as you might hate it, it can be the next best 3 ZOOM, thing to being there. Rookie Mom: The Freedom to Heal in Moon Valley B Y B R I G H I D C O N S TA B L E

I did something that I always wanted to do, but never fully had the grit: I left social media.

At the end of May, when George Floyd was murdered, Instagram feeds and Facebook walls were filled with so many wayside emotions and mixed content.

I was feeling so much about everyone, everything, every place. These emotions were manifesting in my body in different ways and I knew that something needed to change.

Instead, I dedicated June as one of personal healing for myself. Because our world -- our country -- truly needs to mend: physically from COVID-19 and emotionally with so much political and civil discord.

It starts with us. One person at a time. You. All of this tension and stress is obviously natural through the trauma that we are facing right now. For me, much of my stress gets trapped in my body.

So, I made the conscious decision to work on myself for the month of June and not spend my free time after putting Brynn down consuming content on social

media or TV that causes excess upset and unrest.

What’s lucky is that many of the resources I’ve used for healing are all based in our community here in Moon Valley. These tools have allowed me to focus on the self care that I need in order to feel peaceful and thoughtful about my actions, and just a more conscious person overall.

As an added plus (it is June 18th as I write this), my weekly phone usage went down 30% - and that’s including the time Brynn spends watching YouTube Kids!

Not only do I feel more calm and centered, but I don’t feel a “need” to react, record every moment, and deal with initial urges.

Instead, I’m more present, not as distracted, and connecting with my true tribe through actual FaceTime and phone calls without a passive “like” or emoticon of their picture or comment.

Collective healing starts with you first… So, I challenge you to take an inward “summer vacation” this July to focus on your health and enjoy the freedom. Happy healing!

Getting my spine out of the quarantine droop!

Shout out to Dr. Jamey Reinchow and Linda at Moon Valley Chiropractic. Our own MV Tattler’s Art Director, Hana Alanis, had an adjustment there a while back, and I was inspired. Plus, I knew my body needed to get out of the potato shape that it had turned into thanks to quarantine. An initial adjustment is $75. My Friday mornings are happily booked with the good doc thanks to his know-how with my upper and lower back. My sister and nephew have also become addicted to the Dr. Reinchow’s knowledgeable touch. One word: Nyla. Yoga Pura has always been my favorite Moon Valley staple. The community is non-judgmental and open minded. But my Tuesday and Thursday evenings with Nyla is ME time. Mommy time. My 90 minutes to flow, focus, practice with no judgment, and go within. No joke: I always feel at peace driving home in the dark with the stars looking down on me on my way home. Of course the studio’s schedule is varied with different practices and teachers. Arizona school teachers (like me) have a considerable discount on membership and any homeless struggling with PTSD are offered free sessions. New student specials start at $30 for one month.

Connecting with nature grounds my worried thoughts. This hike is less than a mile from our home, so my family is happy to look over Phoenix and just see how small we are in the big scheme of things.

I’ve been awake at 4:30 to watch the 5:18 a.m. sunrise over Moon Valley and meditate off the Lookout trail.

You’d think it’d be hot, but there’s a breeze with the elevation and the weather is in the mid-70s at that time.

The best part? Lookout Mountain is FREE and in our backyard.

Phoenix Rising: Giving back during COVID & Beyond

Arthur T. Phoenix - known to everone as “Phoenix” - is a master of mind, body, and spirit. He’s been using his certified abilities to life coach members of the Moon Valley Community and beyond for more than three decades to help them unlock inner strengths and talents, and improve relationships, health, and life skills. “Through Phoenix the Power life coaching, I help people soul search – discover who they are and where they want to go,” said Phoenix.

As our community is still reeling from the impacts of COVID-19, his services are critical. “Suicide rates and depression have increased from people’s lives being rocked,” said Phoenix. “To prevent a breakdown of courage and faith during the crisis and after it, allow us to support one another by creating a chain of hope.”

Phoenix is now offering virtual group therapy on a donation basis. “People of all nationalities gather Phoenix received an award to share their feelings of hurt, guilt, shame, success, from Mayor Greg Stanton happiness, sadness, etc. and act as a foundation for one another,” said Phoenix. “It’s about we, not me. I am, you are, we are - one.”

Donations from participation are distributed to various organizations.

GUHSD Students earn $83M+ in Scholarships

Glendale Union High School District students had a successful 2019-2020 school year, which included earning an accumulated amount of more than $83 million in scholarships.

Students received various scholarships from in-state and out-of-state colleges and/or universities to pursue their postsecondary education goals. In addition, GUHSD is thrilled to report that select students were recipients of the prestigious National Merit and Flinn Scholarships. Congratulations to all our scholarship recipients! The number thirteen is commemorated again and again in our country’s Great Seal. This beautiful work of art was designed by four committees plus two other gentlemen. Many designs were rejected by the Continental Congress. The current design was approved June 20, 1782. Thirteen is the number of the original colonies: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Virginia.

On the Great Seal there are thirteen stars in the crest above the eagle.

Thirteen stripes appear in the shield, thirteen arrows are held in the eagle’s left claw, and thirteen olives and leaves are clasped in the right claw. Thirteen letters are in the motto E Pluribus Unum (which means in Latin “It [the Eye of Providence] is favorable to our undertakings.” The seal’s reverse side has a pyramid with thirteen steps topped by the “Eye of Providence” design.

The Great Seal commemorates a new era of governance as a republic… at the time something entirely new and hopeful. It is our joy and responsibility to carry our nation’s founding principles forward to each new generation. We do this with humility and pride.

The Great Seal is our national coat of arms. It is used officially as decoration on military uniform buttons, on plaques, and U.S. embassies and consulates. It also appears on one dollar bills. (Check it out!) The national Secretary of State is the official custodian on the Great Seal.

WESD Reopening roadmap

Hello! I’m Dr. Paul Stanton, the proud Superintendent of the Washington Elementary School District. For many, summer is typically a time of travel, rest, and relaxation. As we know, this is not a typical summer and we know that many of our families are facing a variety of challenges.

We turn our focus to the 2020-2021 school year, we are committed to preparing for new ways of teaching and learning focused on your health and safety.

Roadmap for Reopening Schools Arizona State Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman released a Roadmap for Reopening Schools in early June. This guidance, along with information from medical experts and the Governor’s Office, helped us to form subcommittees focused on Social/Emotional Support, Academic Support, School Operations, Communication, Meals, Technology, Transportation, and Personnel. These subcommittees are currently reviewing in-person, online, and blended learning options. Parents and staff also had the opportunity to provide feedback regarding these options. Thank you to those who completed our recent surveys.

Much more planning and preparation remain before details are finalized. In the meantime, here are a few resources offered by the WESD this summer: Free Breakfast and Lunch The WESD is pleased to offer our free Grab and Go Meal program to children ages 1 to 18 this July. Summer Child Care – KidSpace Program Open at Three Sites The WESD KidSpace Summer program has been open since early June to support families returning to work. The program is being offered at Ironwood Elementary, Lookout Mountain Elementary, and Orangewood School Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through July 31, 2020. The program includes safety precautions such as daily temperature checks and face coverings for all students and staff, social distancing procedures, increased handwashing throughout the day, students in smaller group sizes, increased sanitizing and cleaning of classrooms, as well as Health Services staff on site. A Look Back at WESD’s First Virtual Summer Academy The WESD offered the Summer Academy-To-Go program to more than

1,700 students. For three weeks in June, families picked up Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) learning kits to participate in virtual classes led by more than 110 WESD teachers on Google Meet. The program also included Social Emotional Learning (SEL) activities and specialized summer learning packets. A special thank you to the WESD Academic Support Programs team for helping our families learn together this summer.

TRUTH IN TAXATION HEARING – NOTICE OF TAX INCREASE FOR WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT In compliance with §15-905.01, Arizona Revised Statutes, Washington Elementary School District is notifying its property taxpayers of Washington Elementary School District’s intention to raise its primary property taxes over the current level to pay for increased expenditures in those areas where the Governing Board has the authority to increase property taxes for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2020. The Washington Elementary School District is proposing an increase in its primary property tax levy of $545,000.00.

The amount proposed above will cause Washington Elementary School District’s primary property taxes on a $100,000 home to be $3.88. Without the tax increase, the total taxes that would be owed would have been $0.00.

These amounts proposed are above the qualifying tax levies as prescribed by state law, if applicable. The increase is also exclusive of any changes that may occur from property tax levies for voter approved bonded indebtedness or budget and tax overrides.

Summer fun with Camp Hubbard

BY LIL A BALTMAN Operating since 1998, this top-notch, co-ed summer sports camp is designed for ages 4½ to 14. Kids have a great time being unplugged, making new friends, and learning lots of new sports and games such as: basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, archery, swimming and more. Camp Hubbard is available at four Valley locations: St. Bernadette Parish in Scottsdale, Sunnyslope High School in Phoenix, Paradise Valley Christian in Phoenix, and Griffith Elementary in Phoenix. Camp dates vary by location.

Camp Hubbard now has all-new safety guidelines and procedures in place to protect the health and safety of children and employees amid the Coronavirus pandemic. Children will stay in small groups with no more than 10 campers per staff member and when possible, groups will do activities in indoor and outdoor spaces to keep them separated. Staff members will take campers and other employees’ temperatures with a no-touch thermometer.

There are half-day and full-day options available. Half-day is from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and the full-day is from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

There is also “Extended Stay” child care options every day from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. During the Extended Stay hours campers participate in “Open Gym” with organized group games, quiet time, board games, coloring activities, and more. Theme-related activities, games, and crafts will be incorporated throughout the entire week, leading up to the “Friday Fun Day!” Fridays are theme dress-up days for both staff and campers. The afternoons are filled with big events and activities to celebrate each theme.

Costs: $220/week half-day; $285/week full-day. Siblings are $200 and $265. Full-day campers are required to bring their own, selfcooled lunch to camp on Mondays through Thursdays. Every Friday is “Pizza

BY LEON, TRY ME BIC YCLE Bicycling is fun because it is nearly silent. You can hear the birds singing when bicycling. Most of the lanes and paths are away from noisy traffic. Some noises are normal the clicking of the rear hub and the hum of tires. The kickstand hitting the crank is not. Tighten the stand so it doesn’t hit every pedal revolution.

The sound that is most troubling is the sound of something in the tire making a ticking sound. Could be a thorn,tack,glass ect all is not lost. Stop the bike as soon as possible and remove the object a flat tire could be avoided. To keep riding will drive the object deeper into the tire. Biking should be quite if not find out why.

Estate planning for incapacity

BY LIBBY BANK S, THE L AW OFFICE OF LIBBY BANK S When my clients think about estate planning, they tend to think about the end of life, about what’s going to happen to their assets, and who will handle the estate and make distributions to their beneficiaries. Often, they don’t realize that an equally (or maybe more) important aspect of planning is all about who will manage your assets and take care of you and your financial affairs if you become incapacitated. With proper planning, you decide; without proper planning a court may get to make the choice, and at great expense and rarely expeditiously.

What do we mean by “incapacitated?” In this context we mean you are unable to make decisions or manage your affairs. Incapacity can result from an accident or arise from health issues, such as stroke, heart attack or dementia. If you are alive but can’t take care of your financial matters, your Last Will and Testament doesn’t help you – it’s only effective upon your death. You may have a power of attorney in place and believe this planning tool will effectively handle your affairs, but a power of attorney in Arizona only goes so far and often they are poorly written. Many clients who bring in their estate planning documents for review show me a power of attorney that is barely better than nothing at all.

If there is a problem with your power of attorney, or you don’t have one, or someone that holds your assets (like a bank) will not accept what you have signed, a probate court will have to appoint someone to manage those assets for you.

While you would probably prefer that your spouse or life partner manage your assets if you become incapacitated, if you don’t have a plan in place, the court will decide who will act for you. This can be a very big issue for unmarried couples. While the court may appoint your partner, it could also appoint a relative, and that may be the last thing you want or need. For a single person, it isn’t always obvious who should be appointed. And if the obvious choice is a sibling or an adult child who is terrible with finances, you certainly don’t want that person handling your money and property while you are unable!

If you don’t have the right plan in place, someone will need to file a court proceeding to be appointed as guardian of your person and conservator of your estate. These court proceedings are public, and can be expensive, embarrassing, time consuming, and difficult to end. This court case does not replace a probate at death. Unless you plan ahead, your loved ones could have to go through the probate court system twice – once at your incapacity and again on your death.

CONFUSED PARENT DEAR CONFUSED: STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

It’s the idea that teaching these topics promotes critical thinking and problem solving in education today. STEAM, which adds Art into the mix, is also becoming popular. Many of us never heard of the Internet or mobile phones twenty years ago. Today virtual reality, artificial intelligence, augmented reality and blockchain are trending technologies. Yikes! Someone needs to teach kids how to live with, create and work on the tech that emerges from these fields and STEAM and STEM are methods for schools to teach it.

DEAR Gen-EVER, Last week I was typing an email and a screen popped up stating I owed $240.00 for computer usage. I was not aware this was necessary but I paid it according to the instructions. Now today another red screen popped up stating I owe $ 850.00. What is going on?

I don’t have that kind of money! I can’t even get into my computer files now. What do I do? AFRAID TO CLICK DEAR AFRAID: Unfortunately you’ve been hit by ransomware. You’re not alone. About 1 in every 130 emails have threats trying to worm their way into your computer. You probably got infected right there in email. There are a few things to do. First take a picture of your screen. Unplug your computer and any other devices attached to it. Now if you are the type of person who cleans your own pool or can decipher complex algorithms, you might try to fix this yourself. Seriously? No don’t do it. Call a tech company, show them the picture you took to identify the threat and plan to beware of clicking on any strange email llinks or cute, animated kittens in from unidentified senders in the future. (Thank goodness those chain emails are not so rampant anymore. Wait you’re not still doing that right?) Do consider installing antivirus and malware software and chances will be good, with added protection, you won’t be aftraid to click anywhere, anymore.

by Charles Swindoll were shared in my classroom for years as I worked as an Instructor teaching Soft Skills through Maricopa Corporate College and Glendale Community College. Many of my students had been previously incarcerated, recently lost their jobs, were trying to reenter the workforce and needed some bolstering of confidence. I loved this job. I encouraged people of all denominations, colors, walks of life in this 2 day seminar course. I was essentially a cheerleader - which comes rather naturally, as those who know me will attest. This course included Customer Service, Active Listening, Communication Skills, Emotional Intelligence, Working in Teams, Diversity, Ethics, Problem Solving and Career Advancement. People used to say “this is the best course, my kids need this taught in school.” Another piece that I loved was Collaborative Influence, the power of working together and how that impact is so powerful; we recently witnessed the impact right here in our own backyard.

Moon Valley showed, once again, why it is such a beautiful community, as it rallied around a dear young family whose home was destroyed by fire. So many in our community came together to help them out, it was beautiful to witness, and made me proud of this great neighborhood that we all call HOME. In these difficult and challenging times I think a positive attitude is more important than ever: “The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.

Our friends and family are close to our hearts. For the Arizona Women's Partnership, these flowers come as supporters and volunteers.

Our garden has been growing since 2002. "Many flowers come to us via 'job' postings on www.volunteermatch.org and this summer was no exception", notes Paula Cullison, President and Founder of AZWP. One of our most recent volunteers is Liz Fallon who replied to our need for a Social Media Manager.

Liz returned to the Valley after an 8 year stay in NYC where she pursued her acting career. A gifted actress, dancer and singer, Liz has graced the stage here in numerous Arizona Broadway Theater productions - including Sweet Charity, Xanadu, Funny Girl, and is currently Roxie Hart in Chicago.

A native of St Louis, MO, Liz received her BFA in Musical Theater at Millikin University in Decatur, IL. "I found myself with more free time than I'd like during Quarantine, and I wanted to use some of that time to help someone other than myself and potentially make a positive impact on the community.

Red light means stop BLOCK WATCHER BY BLANCHE LUKES It seems to me that more and more people are running the red lights. Running a red light and proceeding through the intersection is less then a minute. However here is the risk or the cost if you don’t make it! Is it worth it?

In talking to my sources, in the insurance business, when one has a altercation in a intersection here is the best guess. Bang! You call for help, 5 min, Review damage, 10 minutes, get real upset with everyone at least 5 minutes, find insurance papers/card 5 minutes. Call insurance agent. Spend at least a hour or two at the scene dealing with the police, and necessary paperwork. Then the fun begins. Get the vehicles towed, but to where to have it repaired. Which repair shop, and at what cost? How much is your deductible? How much is your time worth. What are the inconveniences or rental cost until your car is back to serving your needs?

Let’s address the possibility of someone getting hurt. The other vehicle’s driver and/or a passenger. How about you and/or a possible passenger. Children in one or both cars. And what about other vehicle(s) that may have also been hit. Was there a pedestrian in a the cross walk? Did debris hit someone ? How about a bus bench or a city light pole? Lots of “what if”s !!

I have noticed how everyone seems to be in such a hurry. Even if you are driving 5 miles per hour over the speed limit, they tail gate you and or go around you and then cut you off! Perhaps one should give some thought as to the reason we have a recommended speed sign. A lot of research had been done to determine appropriate speeds for freeways, main traffic routes and residential streets.

I recently read where an impaired driver ran through a school cross walk.

That alone is terrible, but add the loss of a teenage boy walking his twin brothers to school and they all were hit and killed! There are no words to heal the pain of that loss! One of the beautiful things about Moon Valley is its winding streets and soft lighting.

We can enjoy the beautiful sky and stars. It is very important to drive carefully through our unique area . Watch for wildlife, watch for family pets, watch for children, watch for joggers, watch for people walking two or three abreast and watch for that careless distracted driver.

5 Common Causes of Neck Pain (and how chiropractic can help)

NICHOLAS WARNER, DC Neck pain can be acute (short term) or chronic (recurring or persisting for months and even years), but regardless, when you are in pain, relief is the first thing on your mind. Just as important as relief, of course, is finding the cause and ensuring you avoid the behavior / action that brought the pain on in the first place. Here are five common causes of neck pain – and why Doctor of Chiropractic are well-suited to relieve the pain and determine the underlying cause.

1. Poor Posture: Leaning over a desk all day or slouching in your office chair?

You’re bound to develop neck pain eventually, if you haven’t already. Do this quick test: In an upright or seated position, round your shoulders and back (poor posture). Does it impact your neck as well? Exactly!

2. Monitor Madness: Staring at the computer screen for hours at a time?

That’s not good for your health (or sanity), but from a neck pain perspective, it’s madness, particularly if the screen height forces you to crane your neck up (too high) or extend it down (too low).

3. Sleep Issues: Ideally, we spend a third of our day sleeping, so your sleep habits – for better or worse – can have a dramatic effect on your health. With regard to neck pain, anytime you sleep in an uncomfortable position, particularly one that stresses your neck musculature (think about side-sleeping while grabbing your pillow tightly, sleeping on your stomach with your arms out in front of you, or even sleeping on your back, but with a pillow that doesn’t adequately support your neck), you risk neck pain.

4. Technology Overload: We may spend a third of our day sleeping, but we increasingly spend the other 16 hours typing, texting, tapping and otherwise interacting with our smartphones, tablets, etc. Bottom line: bad for your neck.

One doctor has even coined the phrase, “text neck,” to describe the neck pain that can result from this constant technology interaction.

5. The Wrong Movement: Twisting, turning, stretching and stressing your neck is an easy way to cause neck pain. While the muscles in the neck are strong, they can be strained, sprained and even torn, just like any other muscle.

It’s important to note that beyond these common causes, various other health issues can also contribute to or directly cause neck pain, including fibromyalgia, cervical arthritis or spondylosis (essentially spinal arthritis), spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), infection of the spine, and even cancer. The good news is that a Doctor of Chiropractic can help identify which of these or the above causes is to blame.

When neck pain strikes, most people turn to a temporary solution first: pain-

relieving medication. But that is not a permanent solution, of course, and it does not address the cause of the pain at all, which could be something relatively minor – or more serious. I didn’t submit my MVM column for June because teaching online was so overwhelming. It wasn’t a big deal for the young teachers, but it was for me. I’m learning that my brain works slower when it comes to computers and anything that has to do with technology. Though I consider myself a lifelong learner, this does not mean that it comes easily. I’m supposed to work part time and have an itty bitty paycheck to prove it, but during the online learning from March to May, I was working full-time trying to figure it out. I actually started during Spring Break, as soon as I found out that school wasn’t opening up. About the time I finally felt confident and could teach a lesson without any glitches, there was a week left of school!

I got my first computer when our oldest son was an infant and I was 36. If I hadn’t had a home based business (Creative Memories), I don’t know when I would’ve gotten one. I didn’t get a cell phone until I was pregnant with him either and even then, Gary and I shared it. To this day I do not like getting an upgrade for my phone, or a new computer. I hate learning a new system and starting over.

I have learned that I don’t like change.

Sometimes I’m brave when it comes to learning new things. If I’m not in a hurry I’ll try out new travel routes and actually find shortcuts that are pretty cool to know, if I can find my way back again. I learned to overcome my fear of getting lost many years ago when we were constantly doing so in Philadelphia. I taught in the ghetto all four years and it was scary sometimes, driving in the snow was terrifying all the time. Eventually, I learned that getting lost wasn’t such a big deal.

On my walks to Anytime Fitness and stopping in at our local shops, I learned how much small businesses have to pay in credit card fees from Mamma Toledo’s Pie Hole. Now I pay cash whenever I can. I also learned that Valleywide Pool Supply is owned by two men, Richard and Jake.

We’ve lived in the only house we’ve ever owned. We moved in just days before our 10th wedding anniversary. I moved so much as a kid and then college student, I was over it! It’s nothing new that I hate moving. . . I didn’t just learn this about myself. I like our cul-de-sac and friendly neighbors and I want to know where our grandchildren end up before we downsize; however there aren’t any grandchildren coming anytime soon. In the meantime, I’m hanging onto cute craft ideas and fun recipes to do with those babies.

I have been saving recipes for years. One of my yearly, summer projects is organizing closets, cupboards and pantries. Why this must be done annually is frustrating, but I’ve learned that I am part of the problem. I have been finding recipes that are ancient and I’m throwing many away because we eat healthier. I buy organic everything whenever possible and learned that I actually enjoy cooking, because knowing what goes into the meals I serve gives me joy.

A few years ago there was a sale on regular (not organic) ground beef. As I perused the selection a lady told me how excited she was at the price because she was having a big BBQ with friends the next day. Without even thinking I said, “Oh! I’m buying this for our dogs.” Yipes! I’ve since learned to keep my mouth shut. . . most of the time. I’ve gotten better, but there is still room for improvement.

I was resistant to getting the instant pot when it first came out. For one thing it was too expensive and we don’t have a lot of storage space. I had no idea where I was going to put it! A Thanksgiving sale was too good to pass up, so I got one, but didn’t touch it until February. I experimented a handful of times and bought some of the accoutrements that go along, but I haven’t used them yet. Our friend John is a great cook and he taught me how to make a pot roast in it. He had their kitchen island all set up for our two insta pots with everything we needed. It was fun and educational. I did not know all that it could do!

I googled a recipe for the pork chops Gary bought because they are always dry no matter what we do and they came out moist and tender. In the process I learned what it means to brine. I do so love to learn a new trick!

Cooking for friends and loved ones is my love language. I didn’t even realize that doing so was ‘a thing’ until several women in my bible study did it for me after I delivered each of my boys. I learned to be careful who I cook for about 16 years ago when I made a meal for a Shaw Butte Little League (SBLL) mom with cancer. She and her husband invited over extended family thinking they were going to enjoy a free feast, but I’d only made enough for her family of four. They were mad that there wasn’t enough for their guests and had to order out. Since then, I only cook for people I know and care about. My MV Continued on next page

Learning ... continued from previous page friends would never be so rude. The other important thing I learned from those bible study buddies was to use disposable pans. It’s a blessing to not have to worry about returning a casserole dish!

It was during our SBLL days that I learned about protecting our home while away. A family was robbed while watching their son play because their vehicle was broken into and their registration and garage door opener taken. By the time they got home it was empty.

The police officer told them to black out the address on their vehicle registration so the creepy, crooks (of unknown color) don’t know where to go with that garage door opener.

I have been diligent about that ever since.

Learning who to trust, how to do things, where to go, are all important things we all need. Knowing whether you’re a life-long learner, or a learner with quirks like me is a positive step towards self-realization.

I think we are all learning all the time. It’s possible that we don’t like what we’re learning about ourselves, but that’s part of this journey called life. There is some magic in learning, at any age.

Trees... are like children B Y K AT H L E E N V I C K Last month I suggested that we plant some trees in order to shade our sidewalks and give our neighbors a more enjoyable walking experience—not to mention the beauty and environmental benefits. As a result, I was asked to elaborate on the matter.

Trees are very much like children; they are an “undertaking” for the future; they are a “labor” steeped in loving optimism and self-less-ness. The first three years are extremely demanding, requiring a great deal of attention and effort with very little in the way of return; by the time they are six they have begun to shape into the kinds of individuals they will become and they begin to provide insights into their inner selves. As they approach twelve, they become mature, helpful and the feeling within us blossoms that it was worthwhile, as we look forward to the life that we will share with them in future years.

What that all means for trees is for the first 3 years watering is essential. Think of its roots as a child’s feet. Children need new shoes every 3 months –and the shoes have to be slightly larger than the feet so that the feet have room to grow. The trees’ roots grow in similar fashion. Watering should encourage the roots to S P R E A D so it is essential to ooze, ooze, ooze the water slightly away all around from the edge of the circumference of the tree to lead those roots outward and downward. Slight oozing for 4 or so hours once a week for the first year, once every 2 weeks for the second year and once every month for the third year should do it. After that, a desert tree should take pretty much care of itself.

This pandemic has certainly accelerated a lot of things that are an enigma to many, and the wave of the future to a few. For example, the use of face masks.

Regardless of your politics or your personal feelings, it is a foregone conclusion that they will be much more prevalent in the future.

How about ordering your groceries on line and having them delivered to your car, or to your home? My wife has stated several times that she will never go into a grocery store again (probably an exaggeration). I recently did a mortgage for a lady that makes her living by working for InstaCart. I had never heard of them before, but in the last few weeks I have seen them featured on the financial network CNBC. They are an industry standard. GrubHub, what is that about? I bet you know. Insurance companies are sending us refunds of premiums, because we aren’t driving as much. Things are changing rapidly.

Recently I made a presentation to a couple about a reverse mortgage. We are up north for the summer. I drove from Munds Park to Queen Creek for a 45-minute meeting. We had masks but we didn’t wear them; we were spaced far apart in a big conference room. I felt relatively safe, and sanitized myself after the meeting. In spite of social distancing and COVID-19 phobia, this was the only way that I knew to accomplish the task.

Is there another way? Our company routinely uses remote meeting hardware for companywide meetings, but the IT guys set that up. This was about as alien to me as blasting off to hook up with the space shuttle.

Our product development lady was promoting Zoom as a tool for the future.

She has had several Zoom meetings, a few of which I attended. She even had a Zoom tutorial (I dozed thru it). But the idea germinated while driving back from Queen Creek that Zoom might work for me.

In 15 minutes on Google, I determined that I could use this tool effectively.

I can initiate meetings, invite attendees by Email, and provide exhibits which I can prepare in advance. We can have a great interactive meeting in which each attendee can participate. The meeting administrator can mute the others to eliminate background distractions, and they can unmute themselves if they have a cogent contribution. The camera on our computers provide excellent interaction, but they can be turned off if you haven’t changed out of your PJs. I hosted my first meeting last week. It was a roaring success. It was easy to set up. I was able to download the software easily. I chose the “free” version, which enables me to schedule an unlimited number of meetings, however, they are limited to 40 minutes in duration. And, I believe, we can have up to 100 participants. I have been involved in remote meetings on Microsoft Teams, GoToMeeting, Skype, and Zoom. The only one I hosted was on Zoom. For my

purposes, it was great. Regardless of your degree of computer literacy, this is the wave of the future. It is a great way to interact with your grandchildren during this period of social distancing, and it is a great way to conduct business, face to face, without the risks.

Almost all of the parts of a mortgage transaction can be conducted remotely, and with DocuSign, there is really no reason to meet in person. One requirement of a mortgage is that Disclosures (non-binding, informative details of the transaction) be sent out to the borrower in a timely manner. With remote meeting software, such as Zoom, a face to face meeting can be set up, and each page of the package can be displayed on the screen and any questions can be addressed. This is a “no-brainer.” I’m glad I found it. I encourage you to get involved. Like I said, 15 or 20 minutes and you’re proficient. Try it out – there is no cost other than your time.

In 1985 builder Richmond American developed this area of single- and two-story homes. The day after their wedding day, Stacy and Gerald headed to Phoenix leaving Dallas behind for a new job opportunity. Wear Masks, Prevent fires, Practice pool Safety

BY BRET ALDIERI, MVNA PRESIDENT As I write this article, various Phoenix Metro Cities are meeting to review how to handle the increase in Covid19 cases. Most likely our local government will require masks. I was able to obtain a draft copy from the City of Phoenix and can share the following. Phoenix will require face masks to be worn whenever you are within 6 feet of another person that is not a family member. They have carved out exceptions for: Children under 6, people who have a medical condition that prevents wearing one, religious beliefs, restaurant dining and when engaged in team sports, exercise or other physical activities where it’s not practical. The city is asking law enforcement to first educate persons of the need to wear a mask, give warnings then as a last resort, issue a citation of $0 to $250. While I personally am not a big fan of masks, (I find them uncomfortable and my glasses fog easily), we all need to heed this declaration and hopefully, the virus case spike turn around very soon.

CDC and others still promote that higher risk seniors AND those with underlying medical conditions to limit their possible exposure to the virus. That means the rest of us also have a responsibility to help shield those at risk, limit our contact, keeping proper distance, practicing “hyper” hygiene. Unfortunately, Summer fire season is here. The Bush fire is now the 5th largest in Arizona history at 150,000 acres and continues to grow. We had a wet winter followed by an extremely dry spring – so plenty of dead vegetation to fuel summer fires. This is especially the case in northern Arizona, so as you escape the heat north, be extra careful so you don’t start a fire. Most forests have postings concerning campfire restrictions – advise you bring a propane fueled stove for cooking.

It was a case that caused veterans in the animal welfare world to break down in tears. Despite the more than 11,000 animal rescues and investigations the Arizona Humane Society’s (AHS) animal rescue team responds to each year, rescuing a dog whose breed isn’t even identifiable at first glance as she actively bled from her painful skin was too much to bear.

“You couldn’t even tell what she was when we picked her up. It was just one big pile of wrinkles. You couldn’t even tell she was a dog, let alone what breed she was,” said Tracey Miller, AHS’ Field Operations Manager. “Now she is so soft!”

It was early February when Baby Yoda, a seven-year-old German Shepherd who, along with more than 30 other pets, was rescued from horrific conditions.

Baby Yoda was in the worst condition of the pets rescued that day, and today is the only remaining pet in AHS’ care from this very heartbreaking case.

When she arrived for treatment in AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital™ she was almost completely hairless, covered in scabs, and could not comfortably settle down without scratching her irritated skin until it bled. She also needed a great deal of dental work. Despite the extreme pain she was living in prior to her arrival at AHS, she maintained the sweetest personality throughout her entire recovery.

Baby’s treatment for demodectic mange, skin mites, spanned over the course of six months and included medicated baths, low-level laser therapy and oral medications along with lots of love in an AHS Foster Hero home. Though she has made an incredible transformation during this time, she does have ongoing medical needs, mostly due to allergies, that will require financial support throughout her lifetime. However, we are thrilled to report that Baby Yoda is now ready for the next chapter in her journey, and has been adopted.
