Princeton researchers have found “the level of emotional well-being, or happiness, reported while gardening was similar to what people reported while biking, walking, or dining out,” according to a study published in the Journal of Landscape and Urban Planning (2020). And as the summer months drone on in Arizona, I find myself searching for things to do that will bring meaning and satisfaction to me; give me an outlet to channel my energy or feelings of frustration; and allow me to participate in an activity with intention . . . not just with the intention of helping others, but also to soothe myself during this very uncertain time.

The Giving Garden’s mission is to “bring together the gifts of our community to inspire hearts, plant seeds, and sustain hope by growing, feeding, educating and nourishing the body and soul . . . using our hands and our hearts to serve others.” And this is exactly what this organization does . . . there is a literal and metaphorical nourishing for the volunteers and the recipients of this service.

Kasia Smigelski (NCL Class of 2024) says, “I enjoy working at the Giving Garden because I can work outside and get my hands dirty. It is an important service because we’re helping people out all over the valley in need of healthy foods.” After being introduced to this organization through the Moon Valley NCL’s partnership, Kasia took her service a step further and selected the Giving Garden as a beneficiary of an 8th grade philanthropy assignment called the Arrupe Project. Through this project Kasia was able to raise $1000 for the Giving Garden. And she was able to purchase necessary supplies for the volunteers who show up each Saturday morning to help pull weeds, harvest fruits vegetables, and fill the compost barrels.

Christy, Kasia’s mom, says “I enjoy working in the Giving Garden as it appeals to my outdoor nature as well as giving me a chance to work with my hands. I really enjoy the bond that it has created between Kasia and I and I cherish our time together. The philanthropy has been very CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

What did you do on summer vacation?

As the temperatures continue to climb, I hope you are able to find a little reprieve and spend some time either out of town, or in a “cool spot”! It seemed like summer was never going to arrive with the long and wonderful spring we enjoyed this year, but low and behold BOOM the temperatures and summer hazards bombarded our state with lots of red mercury and wild out of control forest fires. Owning a home in Northern Arizona for more than 15 years has wonderful benefits but in the back of your mind you always fear the Monsoon dry thunderstorms, careless campers, and dry woods. We have been blessed in the Northern Arizona region of the Coconino Forest and are still enjoying 80’s in the day and cuddling cool evenings with slight downpours and lows of the 50’s in the evenings.

Then there are the “ZONIES”, I heard from a friend recently that during a trip to Southern California, the beaches we full, shoulder to shoulder with many ASU and U of A logo apparel everywhere. Proud Arizonians!

The 4th of July is usually the height of many summer vacations and celebrations.

(Especially in our family Happy Birthday MOM!) Just as a reminder here is the true reason we celebrate this summer holiday: July 4th Becomes A National Holiday: The tradition of patriotic celebration became even more widespread after the War of 1812, in which the United States again faced Great Britain. In 1870, the U.S. Congress made July 4th a federal holiday; in 1941, the provision was expanded to grant a paid holiday to all federal employees. Over the years, the political importance of the holiday would decline, but Independence Day remained an important national holiday and a symbol of patriotism.

Falling in mid-summer, the Fourth of July has since the late 19th century become a major focus of leisure activities and a common occasion for family gettogethers, often involving fireworks and outdoor barbecues. The most common symbol of the holiday is the American flag, and a common musical accompaniment is “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the national anthem of the United States.

Rookie Mom: Why Children Develop Lifelong Financial Habits by Age 7 B Y B R I G H I D CO N S TA B L E As the third trimester kicks in, my nesting instincts aren’t really towards my house, but rather our family’s finances.

I’ve become obsessed with this podcast called “The Financial Feminsit: Her First 100K.” As someone who is admittedly thick when it comes to understanding basic financial terms, this gal, Tori Dunlap, breaks it down for you in stupidly easy and digestible ways. One episode I really loved was about pinpointing your relationship with money. Tori had me recall my first memory with money, which actually ended up being a few negative ones (which made so much sense about my relationship with money!).

And then the Financial Feminist threw a statistic out that scared me as a parent: Children develop their financial habits before the age of 7. (PS – I just fact-checked this through Google and an article from PBS NewsHour popped up.

Read that if you have the time!)

But, if I had to look at my family history, this statistic makes sense.

My husband’s family were on top of it when it came to his finances: They saved for his college, made him work towards a car they eventually gave him, and he only paid for his graduate degree program, which he was in debt for a few years for. Adam is the financial wizard of our family, and we are stable because of his financial literacy skills.

On the other hand, although I worked hard throughout high school and college to balance my education with work, I am a very well-educated woman with over $100,000 in debt praying that student loans will be forgiven soon. My parents started out saving, but their divorce lended to our siblings defaulting to FAFSA without giving it much thought.

So how do I begin successful financial literacy with my 5-year-old daughter?

Tori also explained how her parents were financially literate and instilled

these qualities very early as a kid. They saved for her college, they invested in IRAs that she would inherit, and they taught her from an early age to save what you earn. A great example was how she wanted to see the play Annie when she was age 5ish, and her parents made her save. The ticket must have been $40, but to her all those nickels and dimes added up to that large ticket amount.

Since my daughter is 5 and her understanding of math isn’t direct, I love that I can adopt that.

For Father’s Day, Brynn “saved” for a Ryan’s World Nintendo Switch game that she and her dad could play together. Her nickels and dimes didn't total the exact cost of $50, BUT, I made her work for it and she is now having a lot of fun “saving” for things she wants.

With this, we upgraded Brynn’s “chore chart.”

About a year ago, I bought a “Printable Chore Chart: Chores and Responsibilities Wall Chart” on Teachers Pay Teachers (TeachersPayTeachers. com) by Teach At Daycare.

As Brynn approaches Kindergarten this fall, we know math will be a huge component so we updated her chores to make it more fun and age appropriate. We put up a picture of a quarter, dime, nickel, and penny, and then assigned each of those items a certain sticker color.

With items on her chore chart, the big-ticket items are a quarter or a blue star – her favorite color – for whatever she wants to complete that week.

For example, as a hesitant reader, if Brynn reads a whole BOB book (an early reader book), then she gets a whole dollar which has her hugely motivated.

Ignorance vs Apathy M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C

BY D EB B IE ER BS TO E SSER I don’t usually rest and relax during my summers off, but I have this time. In addition to taking it easy I’ve also been decluttering and organizing our home-as usual and I read voraciously always. The reading is sometimes for personal pleasure, but this summer I’ve been reading children’s books from my classroom for possible book study topics. When I packed up my room for the summer I came upon books I never read, because I didn’t buy them. Some are Newberry Medal winners and true stories the district purchased years ago. So far they’ve all made me depressed.

The human condition makes me cringe and all the books speak of it in one way or another. The cruelty we humans have projected onto other humans is grossly inhumane. It’s not just the white privilege over the blacks, but the Spaniards over the Natives, Christian vs Jew and the self-righteously religious over old, unattractive, women (as in the witch hunts). I don’t know what it is about our human race that makes us so hateful. Why do we despise those who are different and want to label them? For whatever reason, it continues through time, and history keeps repeating itself.

To make this a topic of discussion in my classroom puts me in danger with the knuckleheads who don’t want our children to know the truth in our history and frankly I need health insurance for my family. My paycheck is virtually nonexistent, but the insurance makes up for it. I can’t take the chance on any idiots suing me for teaching my students historical facts. History-so we don’t make the same mistakes and repeat them over and over, again and again from now until eternity is critically important to teach.

It has shocked, amazed and frightened me at how many of my students don’t know about the Holocaust. It’s not part of any elementary curriculum, but students will come in and ask; having heard about it somewhere. They trust me to be honest, and I honor that by keeping to the facts. Yet…how in the world do they not know about it? To not know is to repeat, but in my Title 1 school, these parents are doing all they can to support their children and many aren’t so academic themselves to even know enough to open a discussion.

As the gifted specialist for grades 3-6, I challenge my students with vocabulary and quotes. I require students to journal the words and phrases every week and when they leave at the end of sixth grade, they’ll have a plethora of things to ponder…if they keep it. It’s fantastic to hear them discuss what something means-the deep meaning that you get from reading between the lines. Some of them are better at it than others, but sharing our thoughts creates ideas and aha moments that stick with them, more so because the insight comes from peers vs me. Most of the cool quotes I get come from Facebook and Instagram, the biggest reason I keep those accounts. I turn many of them into screen savers on my smartboard. A perfect example is a cartoon I captured on social media with two girls where one asks the other, “What’s the difference between ignorance and apathy?”

The older one answered, “Don’t know. Don’t care.”

Three things to know concerning your health

1) Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): What Is It and Why It’s Important Basal Metabolic Rate is an estimate of the minimum number of calories a person needs each day to maintain basic life functions such as breathing, circulation, and digestion.

BMR indicates the number of calories a person burns at rest. This information is vital to anyone attempting to lose weight or build muscle. If a person is trying to lose weight, knowing their BMR will help them establish a maintainable caloric deficit. Alternatively, if a person wants to gain weight, they could use their BMR to determine how many extra calories to consume each day.

2) Be Consistent Consistency is arguably the most important component when working to accomplish goals, in or out of the gym. Without consistency, programs are unorganized, the body has a harder time adapting, and forming habits may be more challenging.

Biologically, a lot of things happen in the body during exercise. Over time these reactions change the body to shed excess pounds, build muscle, or just perform more efficiently. But being consistent with training will increase the likelihood of seeing adaptations sooner.

3) Less Sugar, More Water There are over a million articles about the dangers of consuming more than 25 grams of added sugar per day, but here is one more for good measure; Effects of added sugar intake: Higher blood pressure, inflammation, weight gain, diabetes, and fatty liver disease, all of which linked to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke.

Water is your body’s principal chemical component and makes up about 50% to 70% of your body weight. Every cell, tissue and organ in your body needs water to work properly. Lack of water can lead to dehydration. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.

So how much daily fluid does the average, healthy adult living in a desert climate need? About 4 liters for men and about 3 liters for women. Adjust accordingly based on activity levels and heat exposure.

Thunderbird High School Student Earns Perfect ACT Score Academic excellence continues at Thunderbird High School as Houston Hull earned the highest possible ACT composite score of 36. Fewer than half of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score. In the U.S. high school graduation class of 2021, only 4,055 out of 1.29 million students who took the ACT earned a top composite score. The other day a friend asked me, “how’s business?”

My reply was that “it’s kind of like show business.”

“What do you mean,” he asked.

At that, I broke into the refrain, “There’s no business . . . “ My apologies to Irving Berlin, Ethel Merman, Donald O’Conner, Marilyn Monroe, etal.

Refinance business and purchase business have drastically diminished in the last month or two, but there are some forms of mortgage lending that aren’t taking a hit, in fact, they are increasing.

HELOCs (Home Equity Lines of Credit) have actually soared recently, according to an article in the MPAMAG (Mortgage Professional America) written

by Candyd Mendoza. She cites rising property values as being instrumental.

Demand for HELOCs rose dramatically for the sixth month in a row in April.

It makes sense that being able to access extra funds, while keeping a historically low interest rate on a first mortgage is a big advantage. I don’t exactly know the terms of each loan, but I have had several HELOCs, and I was always able to pay interest-only when convenient, keep a portion of the HELOC commitment in reserve, thus not paying interest on funds that were not actually being used, and I could pay back any or all of the principal when the opportunity arose.

A HELOC presents an affordable option. Check it out.

For the older crowd, that is 62 and above, a Reverse Mortgage is a viable retirement planning tool. Reverse Mortgages are no longer “loans of last resort.”

This product has drastically evolved over the years. It bears little semblance to the loan of the same name that was rolled out during the Reagan Era. HUD (FHA) stepped in and has been progressively refining the terms of their version, called a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage, or HECM, to eliminate the pitfalls experienced by some of the early users.

Incorporating a HECM as one part of a retirement strategy makes sense. It can provide a “safety net” during market downturns. There is no need to sell-off portfolio assets in order to live when their value is down. Access the line of credit afforded by the Reverse Mortgage, with the ability to pay back the advances, if you want, when values normalize.

Another potential strategy is to delay taking Social Security benefits while your portfolio grows. The “tenure” provision provides additional income at a time when it is most needed.

Also, a pre-approved emergency fund is a valuable benefit. If you never have to use it, there is still great peace-of-mind knowing that emergency funds are just a phone call away. There are so many advantages to a Reverse Mortgage with which most elders aren’t familiar. There is no cost or obligation to learn about the benefits of a Reverse Mortgage. Ask around and get with a trusted Reverse Mortgage Specialist. Check it out. You will be glad you did!

She’s proud of what she’s earned, and we encourage her to save.

In the end – especially Gen X and Millenial parents – we definitely know how much we now value a safety net and want that opportunity for our kids so that they do not have a future in debt.

FAMILY GATHERING BLOCK WATCHER BY BLANCHE LUKES Having family spread out over the country may be a challenge, but thanks to emails, face time and text it is not so bad. However, a real treat is when one can go to a beautiful 6 bedroom rental in Colorado and spend a whole week together.

Golly, how does one express the joy of spending quality time with those you love and care about? It is like a gift from Heaven, so to speak. I would like to suggest the same for all my Tattler friends. Seems time scoots by so fast and suddenly dear people go on. If you are fortunate to live into the seniors years you will agree, “Where did the years go”?!

While we are away, we have that issue of a vacant house. This is where it is so great to have developed a block watch on your block.

Having neighbors aware that you are gone adds a extra sense of peace. Of course. supporting our local security service provided by our association helps. Timer lights are a must. Actually having them in the same place and on the same schedule you usually are is easy and a plus.

I also recommend giving a key to a neighbor. We kept the paper delivery daily, so the neighbor came over to pick it up and put it in the house. We have a handy delivery box by our front door. Though we didn’t expect deliveries there always seems to be something on the driveway. The delivery box is an old pool equipment box. We painted it the same color as the house so it blends in really well. Wrote “Delivery Box” on it so if someone comes to the door with something they can just drop it in.

The box is big enough to hold several old blankets to cover the vegetation during frost time.

So my Tattler friends, it is not to early too plan a getaway.

After two years of not being able to travel freely because of COVID-19, everyone is taking advantage of the summer to travel. It’s time to get away with the family and enjoy something new and different. But what do you do about leaving your home? Who takes care of things / pets while you’re gone?

Is it time to update your old trust?

I review many trusts.

Some are quite old, and my client knows it is time for an update. Other times, they were done not terribly long ago, but the laws have changed. How do you know when it is time to update your trust?

There are a couple of key dates that give some answers. First, the Arizona Trust Code was enacted in 2008, to become effective in 2009. The Arizona Trust Code changed the law governing trusts in a substantial way. Thus, if your trust was done around this time or before, an update is definitely in order.

Another key date is 2012. Before 2012, estate taxes were an issue for many people. As an example: In 2001, the Federal law gave each person an estate tax exemption of $675,000. That meant you could leave up to $675,000 without paying estate taxes. If your estate was over the exemption, your family might end up paying estate taxes of 40% on anything over that amount to the IRS. Older trusts had complicated planning to avoid estate taxes because of the low exemption amounts. You may not need that complicated plan today, because each person’s estate tax exemption is over $12 Million (with a reduction to about $6.5 Million in 2026).

How did the old planning work to avoid estate taxes? For a married couple, the older trusts often require that on death of the first spouse, all assets of the trust be divided into two trusts, sometimes called the “A” and “B” trusts, or the survivor’s and decedent’s trusts. The survivor’s share of the community property and the survivor’s separate property is held in the survivor’s trust, with the remainder or some portion of it distributed to the decedent’s trust.

While the surviving spouse still benefits from the decedent’s trust, that trust is irrevocable, cannot be changed and has its own tax identification number and the trustee must file separate tax returns for that trust.

If you don’t have a taxable estate, the division into two trusts at the death of the first spouse may not only be unnecessary but undesirable. When we look at whether to update these provisions of your trust, we analyze all of this and decide what is best for you given your situation and how the estate tax laws impact you.

In addition to the need to updated because of new law, some changes may be needed to your trust just because of the passage of time. Your children or beneficiaries are older. Maybe you’ve had another child that’s not listed, or you now have grandchildren to include. The people you named as trustees and financial agents may not be the best choice any longer. Your decisions on how to distribute your assets may not be what you wish now.

All of these are important reasons to get a review of your trust. When we do an update, we usually do a complete amendment – called a restatement – of the trust. We keep the original trust name and date, and just note that it was restated as of the date we sign the new trust. That way, anything already titled to or transferred to the trust is still in the trust – there is no need to change the title on homes or bank accounts again. We refresh the entire plan in most cases, so your wishes are reflected, and the entire plan is up to date with the current law.

In our office we recommend that you have a review of your estate plan every three to five years. In particular, if your trust was done before 2012, please contact us for our no-charge, 10-point review so that together we can determine if your plan still makes sense for you and your family.

Director Smith also indicated that each complaint will be evaluated to learn the details of police shootings, misconduct by police officers, and other police-related complaints. It will not be a place to complain about other topics. These will be referred to the proper City department. Citizens can help by taking concerns directly to precinct meetings and administrators first before registering a complaint.

Community meetings will be held to further enhance communication between police officers, new staff, local commercial groups, block watches, and individuals. Our responsibilities and opportunities as citizens may be discussed because the Phoenix Police Department operates on a “Community Policing” model. Citizens are trained to help identify problem areas and then the police take actions to create safer neighborhoods. Director Smith will be counting on all of us to be partners in assuring that the police are the best they can be in order to have a city that works well for everyone.

There will be many stiff background checks on people hired to work in the new department. Director Smith was very definite about his explanations for why this is necessary. It is because these staff members will have access to a lot of personal information about officers and citizens. Members who attended this meeting were assured that this new Office will be designed to assure integrity of policing in Phoenix.

By Moon Valley Neighborhood Association President Drew Hutchinson That’s right Moon Valley, we’re on the back half of the year! If you’re anything like me, you have already made a few light purchases for this year’s holiday light judging. I say that as more of a joke, but also a dig at myself who has made multiple purchases already this year for my display. You don’t have to say it, my wife reminds me all of the time, I’m way too into Christmas lights.

I bring up holiday lights for two reasons; The first is we have made a lot of changes to the holiday light judging over the past few years, all of which were to improve the process and experience for the neighborhood. The biggest change has been opening up the voting to anyone with a smartphone. We did this to be more inclusive and transparent with the voting process. I think we have accomplished both and continue to make improvements to the process every year.

Another major change has been the addition of the “Block Award”. I for one never imagined what the winner of the Block Award would look like until that first moment my family turned down Country Gables Dr for the first time.

Breathtaking to say the least. Hats off to them and I hope they’re ready for some competition this year. I’m hearing a lot of rumors floating around about winning that award this year. Can’t wait to see what blocks come up with.

The second reason I bring up the light contest is because it’s what brought me into volunteering with the Moon Valley Neighborhood Association. It might be a little embarrassing to admit, but I was upset over not winning an award and wanted to know more about the process. I attended the annual MVNA meeting in January and was voted in as a board member.

From there I learned that the MVNA is much more than a light judging and luminaria bag and candle distribution organization. We are a voice for the community. We are here to help get information out to our neighbors and listen to them when they have concerns.

I am only six (6) months into my time as the MVNA President, and I feel I still have a long way to go to make things better. I hope during my time with the board I can not only improve the listening and communication, but also inspire more people to step forward to help! There is no other place that I have come across, like Moon Valley and we need to help one another be better. Better neighbors, and most of all better humans.

Sedona has great hiking and biking trails. Two months ago I was there hoping to see someone ride there bike on the white line. No luck it was a windy day no partakers. The White Line is next to Chicken Point and Submarine rock on the broken arrow trail in Sedona. It is a white stripe of rock about a thousand feet long. Hard to walk because of it being off camber slipping sends you down the mountain side. Riding is one way being careful not to hit your pedal on the side of the mountain which would send you down the red rock. At the end you need to do a 180 turn to a lower trail.

I was there 3 weeks ago with my bike. Talked to man from Hungary who was visiting. He rode the white line flated his tire repaired it rode a second time wow.

On the way back he commented rough trail as he rode by. Met him yet a third time said he he had a bike like mine in 1992. Small world we are in.

Meet Vibe Box Amy and Audra met in the summer of 2021 when Audra and her family moved in next door. They quickly bonded over their love of design, raising their families in Moon Valley, and living life filled with friends and good vibes. As their friendship grew, they began to dream of a business they would someday like to start together. ASU Needs MIM Partners with Pal to Create Alzheimer’s Inclusive Experience for Guests of all abilities Caregivers The nonprofit organization Pal Experiences has partnered community As part of ASU’s ongoing efforts to research Alzheimer’s disease and dementia disorders, researchers are looking for current caretakers of Alzheimer’s and dementia patients to see how they manage the stress of caregiving. According to an AARP study, one in every five people in America—roughly 53 million people, are unpaid family caregivers. And, despite the tremendous loads they carry, resources and support can be tough to find. So, who cares for the caregiver? That’s where the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation’s Linda Larkey and the ASU CARES study team comes in to examine how caregivers recharge physically and emotionally to keep going.

It can help guests plan around sensory activities and set expectations for a fun visit.

“Music provides a way to connect with others,” says Brian Dredla, director of education and public programs at MIM. “Since its inception, MIM has developed a wide range of educational programs that inspire learners of all ages and abilities. We are grateful to Pal Experiences for highlighting our commitment to an inclusive environment and helping us share the MIM experience with those audiences who are impacted by autism and other developmental disabilities.”

Double the benefit

We know exercise is good for the heart – but new research suggests it’s even more beneficial for people suffering from anxiety or depression.

How much better?

How about double the benefit.

That’s significant because anxiety / depression isn’t going away; in fact, evidence suggests it’s increased dramatically since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Researchers analyzed health records of 50,000-plus patients, some of whom had suffered a cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack or blocked artery.

Among patients who exercised at least 500 MET (metabolic equivalent) minutes per week – a measure of how much energy you expend during exercise, their risk of suffering an adverse cardiovascular event was significantly (17 percent) lower.

But for people with a diagnosis of anxiety or depression, the story gets even better. Patients with anxiety or depression who achieved 500 MET minutes per week had more than double the reduced cardiovascular risk compared to people without anxiety or depression who also achieved 500 MET minutes weekly. Study findings were presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 71st Annual Scientific Session in April 2022.

So, let’s put MET minutes in perspective for everyone out there who wants to reduce their cardiovascular risk, but doesn’t “get” MET minutes or know how to calculate them. For reference, the amount of energy you expend while at rest (inactive) has a MET score of approximately one. Higher energy activities have higher MET scores; for example, walking briskly is about five METs (defined as expending five times the energy you do when you’re resting), while running (approximately 10-minute mile pace) is nearly 10 METs. Thus, to determine how to achieve 500 MET minutes per week, multiply the MET scores of the physical activity you perform by the number of minutes you perform each activity. Using our examples above, that means 500 MET minutes per week consists of 100 minutes of brisk walking (100 minutes x MET score of five for walking = 500) or 50 minutes of running (50 minutes x MET score of 10 for running = 500).
