MVNA Food Drive, Annual Meeting and Patriotism

The results are in and a big thank you to neighbors who made our 2020 Christmas “Food for Lights” campaign a big success. We collected over 4,200 pounds of food that was donated to the Desert Mission Food bank in Sunnyslope. It reinforces the strength of our community and our power to be compassionate through donations to those less fortunate. Ron Wyckmans started this annual tradition and it continues to grow year over year.

Big shout out to Verbarg Dentistry on 7th street who is a strong community partner collecting food for this important holiday drive.

MVNA hosted our annual meeting in January to review 2020, vote in new board members and to hear from key community leaders. Unfortunately, we were only able to meet virtually, but over 50 neighbors attended. City Council member Deb Stark gave updates on key issues affecting our community: street improvements, countering homelessness, and rules to register care and rental homes. In addition, our Black Mountain Police Precinct Commander Darren Viner attended to review crime statistics. The good news is major crime is down for our community, but we continue to experience thefts. MVNA continues to encourage neighbors to pay annual security dues to fund our Community Action Security (CAS) team partners. This year, we have asked CAS to put additional focus on ensuring neighbors close their garage doors after sunset.

I recently read an article in the Wall Street Journal by a Mr. Steven B. Smith, professor of political science at Yale about Patriotism. In it, he shares thoughts on why many misunderstand what love of country really means in America. He states “Patriotism isn’t indoctrination into a cult of the nation but a form of moral education. Patriotism teaches that real loyalty to our country involves virtues like civility, law abidingness, respect for others, responsibility, love of honor, courage and leadership. Patriotism is reflective and self-critical, working to bring America closer to the country it can and should be.” Powerful

words that are relevant to all of us; we all need to be better patriots by looking out for each other.

You are never too old!

I am quite proud of my husband, Ed DeLorenzo, a Moon Valley resident. As a young man growing up, my husband was very active in sports. While attending Colorado State University, he was on the football team and also lifting weights to build muscle. In 1971, he competed in body building and won the Mr. Colorado title. As life continued, he married, had children, and his stringent work-out routine and healthy eating habits faded away. By age 59, he had high blood pressure and was over-weight by 100 pounds. He decided he wanted to live longer and enjoy his children and future grandchildren. He embarked on a healthier journey and started competing in body building again. As a result, both his blood pressure and weight decreased.

Ed DeLOrenzo Furthermore, at age 72, he won the Natural Mr. Olympia body building title in Las Vegas. This is a global event, as competitors come from all over the world.

He maintains his physique today by working out at Anytime Fitness Moon Valley at 7th Street and Coral Gables, owned by Bill and Barb Nicholls. He recently retired from the business he built, The Ambassador Group, now run by his son David, and diligently worked to obtain his Certified Personal Training certificate.

He would like to give back to his community by working with people 60 years of age and older to help encourage them to reach their personal fitness goals. A person can add five to ten years to their life span by adopting good eating habits and incorporating exercise three to four days a week. My husband always says, “It’s never too late for accomplishments and age is just a number.”

Dear WESD Partners and Community Members, As we continue into 2021, I would like to express my gratitude to each and every one of you. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do to support the WESD. Though it is a new year, we find ourselves facing familiar challenges, but I know that once again, we will get through this together.

Metrics and Vaccine Update WESD continues to use the benchmarks provided by the Maricopa County Public Health Department and receive guidance from our state and county health officials. With the sustained spread of COVID-19 in our community and all three indicators remaining in the red, WESD continues in the online learning model where we began the second semester. We continue to monitor the benchmarks and look forward to transitioning back to our Hybrid model when the data indicates it is safe to do so.

The Maricopa County Department of Health (MCDH) is currently in Phase 1B of the vaccination schedule, which includes education and childcare workers. Since there is a large demand for the vaccine and a limited supply, WESD is working directly with MCDH to find additional ways to distribute the vaccine to our staff.

Now Hiring Teachers We are hiring elementary, middle school, special education and music teachers for the 2021-2022 school year and will be hosting virtual interviews February 16 -18. These interviews are open to current teachers, soon-to-beteachers or college graduates looking to become teachers. Two out, One to Go

I am not being at all flippant about yet another son moving out and moving on. We are proud of them, a M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C little lonesome sometimes, but this is

BY D EB B I E ER BS TO E SSER how it’s supposed to be. We’re ‘empty nesters’ again until Jaden comes home from college for weekends and vacations. It is bittersweet.

It’s not a bad thing being alone. I always said that if we didn’t take care of ‘us’ then ‘we’ wouldn’t exist once our boys were gone. Luckily, Gary and I enjoy each other’s company and have fun together. We’re laughing and talking more. There are definitely positives to having the house to ourselves: *There aren’t a gazillion glasses piled on the kitchen counter every! day! *The kitchen sink is clean when I get up in the morning. *The washer and dryer are empty and available at all times. *No dirty socks are laying around for the dumb dog to eat. *I sleep better due to less worrying. It’s an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ sort of thing, although I think about them all the time. *The gluten free snacks I stock in the cupboard are still there. *I spend less on groceries.

It took me a little time to come up with this list. I had to think hard about the positives. Even though I like the empty house, it’s a little lonely. It’s been exactly one week since Joel moved out. I pulled the neighbor’s trailer packed so tightly, we only needed one tie-down. We stuffed our trucks as well and got it all moved to south Scottsdale before noon. Jon stopped by with lunch and I had a picture taken before he had to go back to work.

My heart swells every time I’m around my boys. I love listening to them laugh and joke around. They are so kind to each other. My phone autocorrects the B in boys to a J and I leave it that way. They give me such joy. My heart aches a little when we part and I have to adjust to the emptiness and quiet again, but it gets easier. The magic will be when it stops hurting and I can smile as they drive away.

Learning to Swim Has Been Deemed Essential By Lila Baltman The United States Swim School Association (USSSA) headquartered in Cave Creek, AZ recently announced that drowning prevention classes, including swim lessons, have been deemed essential by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Learning to swim is a critical tool, as part of a multilayer drowning prevention plan, as demonstrated by a study conducted in 2009 showing that formal swim lessons between the ages of 1 and 4 can help reduce the risk of drowning by 88%.

“We are pleased to see leadership in California recognize the importance of drowning prevention as a significant public health initiative and will work with our volunteers and experts to continue to educate leadership in other states to follow suit, make drowning prevention, including learning to swim, essential in every state in the country,” says Lisa Zarda, Executive Director at USSSA. “As we work together to reduce the spread of COVID-19, we must also continue to carry out public health activities that prevent children from fatal accidents or being permanently harmed by preventable unintentional injuries such as drowning. We cannot and should not ignore the importance of drowning prevention as an essential public health need and we applaud leadership at the CDPH for recognizing this and deeming drowning prevention, including swim lessons, as essential.”

Each year in California and Arizona hundreds of children suffer in drowning incidents. For every fatal drowning, there are five other drowning incidents that end in victim resuscitation and brain injury due to hypoxia. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for the one-to-four-year-old population, and one of the leading causes of unintentional death for the teen and youth population. “We are very pleased that swim lessons were deemed an essential service in California, and we look forward to that same decision being made here in Arizona as well,” says Matt Young, Director of Operations for the Hubbard Family Swim Schools. “The sooner, the better.”

“We understand and accept the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic requires the state and local health departments to be vigilant in order to flatten the curve and prevent the continuation of COVID’s hold on the landscape. Leaders and partners in the drowning prevention community, including the California Coalition for Children’s Safety and Health (CCCSH) leadership, agree that drowning prevention is just as important and can be done safely, even during this pandemic,” adds Zarda.

This news also comes in the wake of recent studies and initiatives developed by USSSA to make learning to swim as safe as possible during COVID-19, including: • Creation of a uniform manual that is based on the Center for Disease Control (CDC) protocols to provide guidance for swim schools to open and continue to provide critical water safety and drowning prevention for children while maintaining everyone’s health and safety.

• Surveys of USSSA member swim schools operating across the country, with our most recent survey showing nearly 44,600 students and staff participating in swim lessons for an average of three months with no COVID-19 transmissions to students in the facility, thus demonstrating that the numerous health and safety measures put in place by swim schools are working.

• Uncovering important information from industry experts on the various ways ventilation for indoor pools are far superior at minimizing virus transmission than most indoor spaces.

At the Hubbard Family Swim School in Phoenix, there are several COVID-19 safety protocols being used including all instructors wearing plastic face shields while teaching children in the water. Children are not required to wear face masks while in the water.

Now celebrating 23 years in business, the Hubbard Family Swim School has an international reputation as leaders in the field of infant swimming and learn-to-swim techniques. Their swim lessons are designed for children up to age 12. Most children enroll in one, 30-minute swim lesson per week. The school even offers free “Baby Splash” classes for babies eight weeks to five months of age.

Parent participation in the water is required. These fun-filled, 30-minute water acclimation classes give parents or caregivers a chance to learn excellent tips on how to enjoy tub time at home with baby and learn how to prepare baby for swim lessons. The Baby Splash classes are free with a one-time $25 registration fee.

In 2019, the American Academy of Pediatrics formally stated that children and parents need to learn to swim. Basic water competency swim skills include the ability to enter the water, surface, turn around, propel oneself for at least 25 yards and then exit the water. Hubbard swim instructors work hard to meet those goals by laying a strong foundation for skilled, confident swimmers.

Valentine’s Day or more officially, St. Valentine’s Day, is February 14. The holiday has its origins in a Roman festival. Around the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I turned the festival into St. Valentine’s Day. Much later, in the 14th Century, it came to be celebrated as a day of romance.

These days, we often give gifts to other family members we love – our children, parents, and others. We want to be sure they know just how dear they are to us, and Valentine’s Day is a great time to do so.

There are many ways to show our family we love them. One such way is to get a Will or Trust in place. A proper estate plan makes it much easier on those you love both if you become incapacitated and when you are no longer here. Without a cohesive and thoughtful estate plan, you may leave a gigantic mess. Your family may have to expend a large sum of money and lots of time and effort to clean it up. Worse, your family may end up fighting.

Time after time when I handled family estate fights, clients said they would never speak to their siblings or stepchildren or stepparent again Others lamented that the messy estate issues were breaking the family apart. I value family highly and these cases broke my heart. I went into estate planning to help clients avoid these messy fights.

A proper estate plan shows your love by easing the burden of administering your estate and eliminating or minimizing potential fights. When there’s no fight, it’s much easier for your loved ones to love and support each other during the difficult time of your incapacity or death. Here are some big mistakes that you should avoid: Not having a plan: This seems obvious, but it is the number one mistake made by hundreds of thousands of people in Arizona. If you don’t have a plan, don’t worry. The State of Arizona has one for you. The legislature put it together for us to follow, but it may not be what you want. My best advice is to put your own plan in place instead. Now, who exactly needs an estate plan? Well, if you have children (minors or adults), you need a plan. If you own a home, you need a plan. Whether your situation is simple or complicated, you need a plan tailored to you that will save your family heartache and money when you’re gone.

Would you do your own major surgery? No! Clearly, you would go to a reputable surgeon who specializes in the area. An attorney who focuses on estate planning knows the ins and outs of the law, the language you need to use, and things you may want to put in your plan that you don’t even know about. If you do a plan yourself, you may make a serious mistake, and when your family finds out, it will be too late to fix it.

Keeping your “older-than-the-hills” estate plan: Did you put a Will together when your children were born? Good for you! But if they now have their own children, it is more than time to revisit and update your plan. If your children are still minors, but your assets have grown substantially, you may want to rethink the type of plan you have and how you are leaving your assets to your children. Laws change too, and often require an update. In Arizona, two key dates are 2008, when the trust code changed completely, and 2012, when estate taxes became less of an issue for most Arizonans. If your plan is older than this, you need a review of the plan and perhaps an update.

I recommend to my clients that they review their plan with me every three years. That way, if the laws have changed, I can let them know how it affects them. If their situation has changed, I can advise whether their plan needs an update due to the new circumstances.

Helping those less fortunate during covid-19

Years ago we were in the midst of a remodel.

Living in these older Moon Valley homes, we often find ourselves juggling a few projects. Well, this particular time, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with a myriad of house hiccups. My contractor, Augustino, “Augie” turned to me with such confidence and calm, and said “Nancy, everything is fixable.” Those words that day really struck me, and I have carried them in my heart and mind for years. Augie has passed, but his words live on with me; they really are a metaphor for life.

Fast forward to 2021 and once again we are doing some fixer-upper things.

Painting our new gate was the final touch to our new courtyard. The painters were done and I was so excited to see my new Walnut colored gate.

I pulled into the driveway, walked in the garage and there they were, just freshly painted. “What do you think?” My painters asked me. I was near tears and said “Gag, I think they look like POOP! I hate the color.” Even my painters agreed and said they would change the color free of charge… they were That Bad. LOL! I went a whole new direction with a fresh coat of a beautiful color and Voila, a whole new look! Fixed and so very happy.

“Nancy, everything is fixable” as we embark on 2021, I am ever hopeful that Augie’s words ring true once again. Hope they do for you, too!

During the summer of 2020, only a few mothers and daughters were able to volunteer in-person for the National Charity League,Inc.(NCL) Moon Valley Chapter. Some of those hours involved helping organize and gather clothes that were donated by people across Phoenix.That opportunity would be my first in-person volunteer philanthropy as a Ticktocker for the class of 2023.

The philanthropy was Hope Women’s Center which is located in Central Phoenix. When I first started in NCL this was one of the first philanthropies I ever went to. Being able to have the chance to be there again this year and help out the moms and children was the highlight of my year!

Nothing much has changed at Hope Women’s center due to the pandemic except for wearing masks and plexiglass being used at the front desk at the entrance of the building. Besides these restrictions, I am very thankful that I was able to volunteer for one of my favorite philanthropies and help out. I’m glad that I can help mothers who are in need during these times because I cannot imagine how difficult it would be raising children without support during a pandemic.

Annie Winkler (Class of 2023) said, “My favorite part about volunteering at Hope Women’s Center was that everyone there was so kind and generous with their time and there was a lot of positive energy and I’m glad I got to contribute to that positivity.”

The Hope Women’s Center provides support and resources for women who have gone through a traumatic experience and helps them get back on their feet in life. Most of us grow up with a mom and dad in our home and a relatively “normal” life.

Volunteering at Hope Women’s Center has taught me that not all mothers and children feel valued as much as I do.That is why I absolutely love helping these moms and contributing my time so they can get back on the right track and provide for their children. Seeing these women regain confidence in themselves and becoming successful is a wonderful thing to witness. Being able to show your love and support to those women means the world to them, especially through simple acts of kindness and knowing those acts can make a big difference in their lives is very meaningful to me.

National Charity League (NCL) is a philanthropic organization that contains more than 200 chapters around the country focusing on strengthening and forming mother-daughter relationships while doing community service, cultural experience, and leadership development.

Members in the organization contain girls from 7th to 12th grade with their mothers included.

My personal wanderlust started when I was in college. An advertisement in the Travel Section of the Sunday New York Times caught my eye.

As a student, I could secure a 3 month (all inclusive) trip to Europe with R/T Atlantic Ocean crossing via steamship for $999.

I had enough savings from my part time jobs to make this a reality. The summer of 1963 changed my life. The trip took us from England and across the Channel to visit France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Spain and Italy, as well as the smaller countries of Monaco, San Marino, Andorra, and Liechtenstein.

Fast forward to my present international travels - now fueled by frequent flyer points earned primarily by opening and closing airline affiliated credit cards.

What an enticement! With bonus miles of 50,000 to 70,000 frequent flyer miles for opening a credit card, I made this a serious hobby.

When I learned that my husband could open one too by using his ff number, I was overjoyed! The usual requirement is the spending of about $2,000 - $3,000 in the first few months of opening the account.

For the past 15 years I have gotten good at this hobby which I call The Credit Card Game. I prefer to use these frequent flyer miles only for international travel. At the beginning I would use the miles for Coach travel to Spain, Italy, Ireland, Austria, Amsterdam, South America. Now that we are getting a bit older, I prefer to save the miles for First Class or Business Class travel. These seats can be obtained for the lowest amount of miles with some flexibility of dates and a great amount of patience. Open Jaw tickets do not require additional miles. One of our trips was to Sydney, Australia with a return from Auckland, NZ; another was to Buenos Aires, Argentina with a return from Santiago, Chile and another to Dublin, Ireland and return from Berlin, Germany. The possibilities are endless.

Unlike The Points Guy, I try to limit our open credit cards to three airlines: American, United and Delta. Moreover, one needs a system to keep track of the cards and miles. Your credit rating will not be affected by the opening and closing of credit cards, if pay your credit card bills on time and in full.

I have estimated that our free frequent flyer airline ticket benefit is valued at over $100,000 to date; not bad for a hobby.

Whether you dream of sipping Champagne in France or wandering the Dolomites in Italy, I wish you a Bon Voyage!!!

THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON I’m writing this article on Inauguration Day but you probably won’t read it until around the first of February. That’s OK, we may have a bit more insight by then.

My source is an article in AXIOS by Don Rabouin, dated January 20, 2021. He is citing Janet Yellen, former Fed Chairman and Joe Biden’s nominee for Treasury Secretary. She was speaking to the Senate’s Finance Committee during her confirmation hearing.

She reassured the Committee that the bullish environment will remain in place. And, last week current Fed Chairman, Jerome Powell, gave assurances that an interest rate hike isn’t even in consideration at this point in time.

Their “focus right now is on providing relief and on helping families keep a roof over their heads and food on the table . . ., “said Yellen.

Here is the point – Low rates along with trillions in economic aid, equate to more money in the economy. Companies can keep themselves afloat by borrowing, without leveraging themselves out of existence, thus they have the ability to pay back when times turn around.

Extremely low inflation, which has been less than 2% for the last ten years or so, bolsters the stock market, because fears of runaway inflation, inefficient markets and excessive debt are kept in check.

One of the beneficial consequences of this monetary policy is that mortgages rates will remain at “all-time-lows” for the foreseeable future. Not all of us are in a position to buy a new home or refinance our current home, but if you are in that position, now is the hour.

It is doubtful we will ever see rates like this again. My suggestion is to start the investigative process now. Talk with a trusted mortgage loan officer and get prequalified. There is not cost for this. If you are in the purchase market, talk with your favorite Realtor. You probably have to sell your current home before you buy. Realtors who are on both sides of a transaction like this will jump thru hoops to make sure you are satisfied.

Someone once said that “timing is everything.” This is the time!

Monthly UPdate from Councilwoman Deb Stark In the city of Phoenix, homelessness and affordable housing continue to be top priorities. Homelessness has been a growing concern not only in Phoenix, but in the entire nation—no doubt the pandemic has worsened the situation.

The Phoenix City Council recently approved a Strategies to Address Homelessness Plan that focuses on strategies to help persons experiencing homelessness and best practices to mitigate impacts to surrounding neighborhoods. The plan, which identifies gaps, and outlines goals and objectives, was developed with community input from dozens of public meetings that included hundreds of attendees and thousands of community member comments.

One important element of the Strategies to Address Homelessness Plan is the creation of a Homeless Strategies Taskforce, made up of 18 community members, service providers, business owners, members of the faith community, etc. This group will meet monthly to provide recommendations to the city.

The Strategies to Address Homeless Plan also incorporates the Council-approved Housing Phoenix Plan, the first-ever plan created by the city, which establishes a goal to create and preserve 50,000 homes by 2030 to address the housing shortage in Phoenix.

The Housing Phoenix Plan identifies housing needs, gaps and recommends policy initiatives to reach the goal of providing more affordable housing, which is critical in preventing homelessness.

In 2019, the city of Phoenix spent about $20 million in services related to homeless solutions across city

departments. About $4 million of that was dedicated to direct services to help those experiencing homelessness, including homeless outreach and engagement, veteran navigation and engagement, emergency shelter, rent and utility assistance, eviction prevention, and more.

For those experiencing homelessness, PHX C.A.R.E.S. (Community Action Response Engagement Services) sends trained outreach teams, who take the time to build rapport and trust with people on the street, to encourage them to accept the services and resources that are offered to help end their homelessness. PHX C.A.R.E.S. also unifies city resources and community partners to respond to the impacted neighborhood and business with services and education.

Adoption Spotlight: SHAWN About as handsome and regal as they come, Shawn (654871) is a gorgeous eight-year-old domestic longhair that closely resembles his wild cousins with his lovely coat and mane. This sweet kitty was brought to the Arizona Humane Society by a Good Samaritan as a sick stray when he was found underweight and not feeling well. Treated in AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital for some bladder issues, he is now looking for a forever home to treat him like the royalty that he just knows he is.

Shawn is a sweet but sometimes shy boy who will need a little patience while getting acclimated to his home. However, once he opens up he is very cuddly and is the first to give big loud purrs, instead of roars, to say hello. He would also love a family that helps him keep his fur as shiny and beautiful as it is now by helping him with some brushing every now and then.

Last month I discussed the primary goal of a working kitchen— layout. This month I would like to offer some thoughts about the secondary goal—maximizing counter space.

There are 3 basic kitchen layouts: U-shaped, L-shape and parallel (sometimes referred to as “galley”). Corners are virtually useless and should be avoided.

Therefore, an L-shape layout is better than a U-shape but the very best is parallel and it is no wonder that commercial kitchens are almost always parallel. When considering a parallel layout, a minimum of 3 feet and an absolute maximum of 4 feet between counters is the standard.

Kitchens are measured in linear (running) feet of counter & appliance space. They are not measured in square footage. Way back in the 1950’s an ample kitchen was about 15 linear feet (2 ½ feet each for the sink, range & refrigerator and 7 ½ feet of counter space). Today a comfortably sized kitchen is more than double that. My, how times have changed! But still, counter space is always at a premium.

A good working kitchen has mostly large expanses of counter rather than many bits of smaller (less than 2 feet) sections so a working kitchen should be planned to condense the number of sections in order to create counter areas of at least 5 feet.

AND, the enemy of counterspace is parking space for unnecessary objects (like baskets, doo-dads and containers of utensils); store these, hanging, in the vertical space between the counter and the overhead cabinets. Places like IKEA offer a variety of hanging systems that will keep your small items (cooking oils, spices, utensils, knives etc.) up out of the way but still in sight and easily reachable. Use the smaller bits of counter for the coffeemaker, toaster, mix-master and blender. The object is to keep the long prep-andassembly counters free from anything on them and I will discuss some ways of accomplishing this next time.

SHEMER ART CENTER SHOWCASES WORKS FROM 28 HIGH SCHOOLS, Including Thunderbird & Moon Valley High School Artists This year’s New Horizons High School Student Art Exhibition, currently on display at the Shemer Art Center through February 18, showcases a total of 49 student artists from 28 high schools in the Valley. This year, community donors have come together to award 52 scholarships to these artists, totaling over $5,600.

This exhibition, held for over 30 years, features the top two works of art (created by juniors and seniors) selected by instructors at high schools throughout the Valley. This year’s participating high schools include: Apollo, Barry Goldwater, Boulder Creek, Carl Hayden, Chaparral, Corona del Sol, Deer Valley, Desert Mountain, Glendale, Greenway, Highland, Independence, Ironwood, Maryvale, McClintock, Moon Valley High School, Mountain Ridge, New School for the Arts & Academics, North, Phoenix Christian Preparatory, Pinnacle, Red Mountain, Saguaro, Tempe, Thunderbird, Valley Vista, Veritas Preparatory Academy and Washington.

Awards this year were presented by 21 Valley residents and art organizations, many of whom have been long-time supporters of this exhibition at the Shemer Art Center. “We are so pleased to showcase this year’s exhibition, which features an inspiring array of artworks created in a variety of mediums including drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, mixed media and digital art,” said Shonna James, president & executive director of the Shemer Art Center.

“Especially interesting are the artist statements that accompany each work of art this year. But like every year, because each school has the opportunity to choose its top two works of art, the exhibition showcases the very best of the Valley’s student artists as well as the quality of the art education being provided at each school by their art instructors.”

The Shemer Art Center was the very first home built in Arcadia. Originally constructed in 1919 it was purchased in 1984 by Martha Evvard Shemer, who donated it to the City of Phoenix. Today the Shemer Art Center is truly a “home for the arts.” It is a warm, inviting place for residents of Arcadia and visitors to enjoy and learn about visual art, through fun and affordable classes, lectures, workshops, exhibits and events. The Secret to a Happier Year

After all that we’ve been through, a happier year seems like both an eventuality and an absolute necessity. But it’s more than just a catch phrase; there’s a real science behind attaining happiness in 2021 and beyond. So take out your list of New Year’s resolutions for this year and get ready to make some changes that will help you make changes for the better.

What’s the key to happiness this year? Look beyond things like losing weight, exercising consistently, eating more vegetables, etc. Those are great goals, but research suggests that not only are most people unsuccessful at attaining them, but they also won’t deliver true happiness. What will? Doing things that make the world a better place.

According to self-determination theory (SDT), we all have a natural, built-in tendency toward behavior that is effective and healthy. Whenever you willingly act in a way that helps others, you satisfy the three basic needs postulated by SDT: autonomy (choosing to do something you believe has personal value), competence (creating a sense of accomplishment by taking on challenges) and relatedness (establishing a connection with others).

By acting in this way, you satisfy the basic requirements for your own happiness – and of course, you’re probably more likely to succeed. After all, which are you more likely (and willing) to do this year: lose weight or help, say, a family member in need? SDT proponents would say that the latter is not only more likely, but also more rewarding in terms of your personal happiness.

So review your list of resolutions and make changes where necessary. Focus more on how to improve others and the world this year; in doing so, you’ll have a happier 2021, say SDT advocates, because your essential psychological needs will be met. Achieving a happier you – isn’t that what your New Year’s resolutions are really designed to accomplish?

BLOCK WATCHER BY BLANCHE LUKES Have you ever gone off and left your garage door open OR have you gone in the house and forgot to close the garage door? Are you one of those people who leaves your ignition key in the car? Do you lock your car in the garage and or carport? If so you may want to rethink that. Did you know there are garage door openers that have timers built in. I called around and was not able to find a unit you can add to your existing garage door openers. That doesn’t mean there isn’t one out there. When we replaced out garage door opener it came with the feature. So it will automatically close at whatever time sequence you have programed it to. It also has a security lock feature.

Support the local volunteer neighborhood association. It has provided an extra layer of security, For a nominal fee, they have worked out an arrangement with a security company that drives our neighborhood daily.

The more subscribers, the more hours we have of that extra set of eyes.

Since the bad guys drive our neighborhood looking for easy stuff to steal you are contributing to their success if you are not diligent. It is called being complicit. As a community we have a responsibility to protect it. By coming together and observing reasonable interaction we keep Moon Valley the special place it is. Leaving junk visable is not helping. Sure you got to clean the garage out. Sure there is stuff to get rid of but not on going. We are fortunate to have the bulk pick up service four times a year, provided by the city. Type in Bulk Pick up Phoenix for information on your computer for their information. Also we have an up and coming neighborhood Garage Sale, Saturday March 6th . After our garage sale don’t forget St Vincent de Paul, the Salvation Army and Good Will all can recycle stuff . I am sure there are many other needy and helpful organizations that would appreciate your donations.

In checking the covenents codes and restrictions (you got those when you bought your house) Book 92, Article 8 “No structures of a temporary character, trailer, basement, tent, shack, garage, bar or other outbuilding shall be used on any lot at any times as a residentce either temporary or permanently” We seem to have a disregard for theses CC& R’s. Warning. If they are abused for a certain length of time we will lose that protection. In the mean time the City of Phoenix can and may site these situations along with a monetary fine.

BY FROST Y K ROENING January 13 Sonoran Audubon Society (SOS) presented an informative zoom program about the local birds and where they can be found. The presenters, Bob McCormick and Steven Prager, showed photos of the common birds we see regularly in Moon Valley. They also highlighted the great variety of birds to be seen by driving short distances from Central Phoenix. Most of the locations are to the west of us where there is open water. We have some open water, too, at the golf courses. It is amazing that we have at least four Harris hawks and four great-horned owls feeding on rabbits, quail, and “little brown jobs.”

Anyone can go to SonoranAudubon.org and find a great deal of information on bird counts (very important work and anyone can participate), maps, and important web pages that clue us into how to identify species. There are many fine bird books, videos, bird song CDs, DVDs, and apps for phones and tablets available on-line. eBbird is one app. Sibley and Audubon also have apps. The best binoculars for beginners are 8 (enlargement) by 42 (wide). Many smart phones have cameras capable of taking fine photos of birds. The Game and Fish Department has bird lists.

Many birds like to have people talk quietly to them. My husband whistles and birds come and investigate who is in the neighborhood! Some birders make a sound like “bshshsh” to draw birds. Birders are urged to wear muted colors. Birds can see colors and may be frightened by reds and yellow clothing.

With Covid more people are staying home and, perhaps, seeing birds out windows. It is so entertaining to watch birds feed, play, fly, build nests, and enjoy our amazing winter weather. Their happiness is my joy each day. Sonoran Audubon has birding trips designed with Covid safety in mind. The SAS website has instructions for participants. Birding is one activity we all can participate in. It is the most popular sport worldwide.

The next Sonoran Audubon Society meeting will be February 10 by invitation.

Dear Passing, I hear you! Many websites ask you to enter different combinations of letters, numbers and symbols when setting up a password and it’s confusing. And often soooo frustrating!

Truly, passwords are there to identify that you are the right person allowed to enter a site that may hold some of your personal information. That annoying little challenge conformsit’s really you wanting to get that bank info, use that program application or add your information to a form. And, of course, keep the bad guys out.

Remembering all the different combinations they ask for is a pain.

Some folks just use the same password for everything. (You can visualize me waving my metallic index finger at you, right?) Using easy or similar passwords is a super horrible, bad, no good, awful idea because if a bad guy gets a hold of one of your passwords, they will try to access all your other accounts and swoop right into your bank account. I’ve seen this happen a lot and we don’t want this trouble for you!

There are some easy solutions to help make this all password mambo jumbo easier. One is to use a pass

phrase instead of a password. A passphrase is a bunch of random words that can -- but don’t really have to -- make sense, except to you. Remembering “My husband is a R0ck star!” or “Fluffy is the best dog ever even when he messes outside!” Pass phrases can be more secure than passwords because they are usually longer and harder for bad guys to crack.

So the next time you sign up for a new online account, just think of a random phrase you’ll remember. It’s easier for you, but harder for cybercriminals or nefarious bots. Which is exactly what clever, tech-savvy computer users like you strive for, right?

Rookie Mom: Happy 4th Birthday, Brynn!

February is a special month for my family. It’s the month of Brynn’s birthday and always has me bringing up those fresh feelings of my daughter who made me a first-time mom.

I think many mothers can attest to the motherhood journey not being what they expected, whether good or bad. One thing that always remained consistent was the feeling I had holding my little girl, or teaching her how to write her name, or playing with her outside: It might be exhausting and sometimes challenging, but I am beyond grateful to be this child’s mother.

But still: I seriously cannot believe that I will have a 4 year old! Brynn went from this observant and aware little baby, to a creative and silly toddler, to now a wild and vocal little girl. Almost everyday, Adam and I laugh at the little things she says or does.

Her latest phrase -- which I wish I could get away with -- is when we’re in the car on the way home from school. I ask about her day, who she played with, what projects she created. And she’s now responding with: “Mom, my mouth is tired from talking all day.” But, then she’ll go on and on about wanting to play Candy Land at home.

Oh, Candy Land. Let’s not get started there. She received the board game as a gift for Christmas and is obsessed with it… But goes full on meltdown if she cannot win. She reminds me of my older sister, Meghan, an attorney and competitive to the bone. I’ve learned to pop some of those pink cards with a truffle or popsicle to the side, so that if my husband and I are winning, I can move that to the top of the card pile that can help her “win.” To avoid any meltdowns. (Sure, call me Mother of the Year.)

Another quirk of my now 4-year-old Brynn is riding her Razor scooter around the neighborhood. Well, I should say, she rides it for about five minutes and then asks me to carry it around the block, only to finish the last five minutes riding it again.

Brynn is very aware of the teachers and helpers at her school taking care of her, asking me (twice now) to make a card for Mr. Andy, the school janitor,

“because we are messy and he cleans up our messes.”

In the car, I’ve created a playlist on Spotify called “Brynnz Jamz” where it goes from “I’m a Gummy Bear to Barbie’s “Mermaid Party.”

She’s ridiculously expressive when she’s singing and dancing, but when I turn around to take a video or picture she gets automatically defensive. But, I think my favorite phrase of hers is when a favorite song comes on and she says, “This is my jam!” or “Let’s jam, Mom!” Adam once woke me up from a nap because he was doing Play Doh with Brynn said something random and funny. She was peeling apart the dough and said, “Ohhh, so satisfying.”

These little phrases crack us up and just remind us how she’s a little girl who was quarantined with two adults. But Brynn won’t let us forget we are quarantined with a sassy little girl as we endlessly watch Muppet Babies or T.O.T.S. or America’s Funniest Home Videos or Trolls.

On the weekends, when Adam and I would like to sleep in, we hear Brynn being busy around our room and wake up to what Brynn refers to as a “gorgeous” face. She rummaged through my makeup drawer and applied bright pink or blue eyeshadow all over her face. Again, Mother of the Year.

Brynn Marie, your Dad and I are enormously proud that you’re our daughter.

You are this great combination of nerdy and cool, curious and intelligent, shy and outgoing. We hope that this year brings more opportunities than last and wish you a very Happy 4th Birthday!
