2020, hmmmmmm I’ve always been a glass half full kinda gal, 2020 has sure made that a bit harder than usual for me and many of you as well. I remember our “Holiday Party” last year, ringing in the “Roaring 20’s”, anticipating one of the best “years” on record. All the stars were aligned, bases loaded, pieces in place to hit the “home runs”, for our businesses, personal goals, family plans and every part of our lives. And then BOOM! A pandemic hits the world and turns us all upside down, swirling, tumbling and spinning us out of control in any ways. Not to mention the many number of associates, friends and family members who have suffered major life challenges of life-threatening sickness, cancer, lost jobs, lost businesses and broken relationships, not even due to the pandemic climates. But life does go on, and I am reminded daily by looking around me and finding the most brilliant, resilient, creative, and talented individuals are amongst us all. We choose our paths, we choose how we handle things, react and resolve and march on. “Having your health” is much more meaningful to me today, not only as I grow older, but in truly paying more attention to your body, what it is telling you and how you will work with and for it. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the upmost important thing we can do, not only for ourselves, but our family and friend and co-workers. As this year comes to an end, lets lift our glasses with a toast to : a healthy, wealthy, happy end, with glorious visions of the BEST 2021 ahead.

WESD: Lookout Mountain National Blue Ribbon Award BY DR . PAUL S TANTON, SUPERINTENDENT, WESD
Hello! I am Dr. Paul Stanton, the proud superintendent of the Washington Elementary School District. I would like to express my gratitude to our students, families, staff and community for your continued support and patience. This year has been unlike any other, and your ability to quickly adapt to changes is truly appreciated. Return to Distance Learning Since the pandemic began, the WESD has used the benchmarks and the guidance from our state and local health officials, the Governor and Superintendent of Public Instruction to determine the appropriate learning model for our students. Based on benchmark data, WESD made the decision to return to Online Distance Learning last month most likely through Winter Break and into the new year. Despite this change to the learning model, WESD teachers, administrators and staff remain committed to meeting the academic, social and emotional needs of all of our students. Lookout Mountain National Blue Ribbon Award I would like to once again congratulate Principal Trisha Heller and the rest of the team at Lookout Mountain Elementary School on being named a 2020 Exemplary High Performing National Blue Ribbon School. Lookout Mountain was formally recognized during the virtual National Blue Ribbon Award Ceremony hosted by the Department of Education on November 13 and 14. Congratulations to the Lookout Mountain community on this incredible accomplishment. Kindergarten Registration WESD offers a free, full-day kindergarten program that includes numerous enrichment opportunities such as art, music and PE, in addition to, high academics and opportunities for gifted students. Enrollment is now open
for the 2021 – 2022 school year. To register, visit our Welcome and Registration center, with extended hours and bilingual staff, located at 3200 W. Cholla Ave. Or, begin the process online at www.wesdschools.org/registration or by calling 602-896-6950. Please share with anyone looking to give their student a head start. Give to Your Local School through Tax Credits Please consider making a tax credit donation to a WESD school. Tax credits are a great way to ensure that your tax dollars stay right here at a school making a difference in the lives of local students. You will receive a dollar for dollar reduction on your state income taxes (up to $200 filing single or $400 filing jointly). Whatever you can give to your local school is appreciated. Donating is simple. Visit www.wesdschools.org/ taxcredit and you will improve the education of a child in just a few steps. Thank you for your support. For more information, contact at 602-347-2737. Like Us and Follow Us During these dynamic times, one of the best ways to keep up with the WESD is by following us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn (@ wesdschools). We post daily and weekly updates as well as great news about our students, staff and community. We also encourage you to follow your school’s individual Facebook page. You can stay upto-date with the latest news on our Web site at www. wesdschools.org. Appreciation Thank you for choosing the WESD to educate your children and grandchildren. We are partners in your child or grandchild’s education.

boys team charity: Spreading some cheer during the holidays! BY K E ATON BERG & W YAT T RE YNOLDS
2020 has been a year of challenges for sure. Along with adjusting to different school schedules and social situations, the members of boys team charity have been looking for creative ways to help others while being mindful of the restrictions that need to be in place. We are very excited about these events on the btc calendar! On December 4th, many team members and their coaches gathered, packed, wrapped and bagged gift donations for families of a loved one who are receiving cancer treatments at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. This is an event sponsored by the Jaydie Lynn King Foundation Adopt A Family project.(www.teamjaydie.org) In addition, the Class of 2022 adopted a family through the foundation. Donations were made to ensure that the family would have some essentials and much needed cheer during the holidays. We are honored to have helped this wonderful organization. Mom’s Place, a Neighborhood Ministries organization, is another place that has been in need for living essentials for their families whom they serve. btc was able to provide some Christmas gifts and assistance to the families at Mom’s Place. Working together for others is a wonderful way to celebrate this season of giving. We showed some of the wonderful teachers in our community how much we appreciate them by providing some baked goods to the dedicated faculty at Mountain Sky Junior High. Some delicious cookies, treats and thank you notes were given to the school as a way to spread appreciation, love and support! In September, the Class of 2024, assembled in the park for a team meeting.
The boys discussed ways of dealing with the changes in their lives this year. Many talked about how exercising, spending time with loved ones and making sure to connect with others has helped them cope. While the community receives some wonderful service from the members of btc, the boys get so much in return. They are taking a part in the process to make the world a better place for all. These opportunities of service give the boys a chance to think of others and feel positive during some trying times. We want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy holiday
season! boys team charity is a volunteer service organization dedicated to developing an altruistic spirit in young men through active participation in philanthropic projects in their communities. btc North Valley includes those living in 85022, 85023 and 85029 zip codes. New Year, New You? BY LIBBY BANK S, PLLC THE L AW OFFICE OF LIBBY BANK S
If it’s one thing we might all agree on, it is that we are ready to say goodbye to 2020 and welcome a New Year! With the new year comes resolutions: goals for weight loss, for personal improvement, for career advancement, maybe even to put an estate plan in place. Often, though, our New Year’s resolutions fall by the wayside before Groundhog Day. If we want this to be different, we must take a different approach. One way is to think of the resolution not as an ultimate goal to be achieved, but as habits to put in place that will lead us to the changes we want. Instead of focusing on losing weight, focus on eliminating that bad habit of snacking before bed, and establishing a new habit of eating more vegetables. Another focus can be on WHO you want to be: who will you be when you reach your goal? If you are aiming for fitness, perhaps your new habit is spending Saturday morning on a bike ride instead of on the couch. Think also about what will keep you from establishing new habits to reach your goal. If you live with others who don’t have to watch their weight, you may find yourself surrounded by temptation. You need to figure out how to deal with that. Next, enlist help! Find an accountability partner who is working toward similar goals. Ask your family members to help. Maybe they can hide their treats where you won’t find them (or at least keep them off the counter!). One resolution on your list may be to create a will or trust. This is a great goal and easy to achieve. Just take it one step at a time. Where to begin? Get educated about estate planning! If you don’t know how to get started or what you might need, it’s easy to put off estate planning. One easy
way to get more information is to look at my website, www.libbybanks.com. We have many educational offerings in video and blog format, all designed to give you an overview on the why and how of estate planning. Take advantage of a free consultation. I offer a free initial consultation to let you ask questions, learn more and see if I am a good fit for you. In this one-hour meeting, we talk about why it’s important to plan. We discuss your specific situation and what type of plan would be best for you, and the different parts of the estate plan and how they work to take care of your family. Get a complimentary review of your existing plan. Change is inevitable, and many things may have changed since you last updated your plan. Are your children adults and your named trustees now too old to serve? Have the laws changed? Have your assets changed? Our free review will go over all these questions and make sure your plan still serves your needs. Another way to meet your goals is to keep in mind the “why” behind them. If your goal is to get fit, keep putting front and center why you want to do that. Is it to keep up with your children (or grandchildren)? To hike the Grand Canyon? To feel good or to look good? The reason behind your goal should be the motivating force. If you’ve been putting off your estate planning, knowing why to do it can put you on the path to getting it done. Your why might be just to give yourself a little peace of mind that you have a plan in place. Maybe it’s to show your family you love them. Another goal I often hear from clients is the desire to maintain family harmony. As always, we are here to help! To make an appointment for an initial estate planning consultation or estate plan review, call us at 602-375-6752, email info@libbybanks.com or check our website.

Merry Christmas Moon Valley
BY BRET ALDIERI, MVNA PRESIDENT
Wow – it’s now December but what a challenging 2020 we all experienced. The MVNA board and I hope this article finds everyone well and ready for the festive season of Christmas. Moon Valley has a great tradition of embracing the holiday season and this season looks to be more impressive. Recapping MVNA 2020 - while we didn’t host any events this year (beyond our Jan. annual meeting), we did help to facilitate communications and help those in need. A Senior’s NCL Experience BY CHARLOT TE MCCLELL AND As the year and Covid-19 goes on, the mothers and daughters of the Moon Valley Chapter of National Charity League, Inc., have continued to do service for the community. During this time it is especially important to recognize the senior class Ticktockers who have continued to give back to the community while still managing the stress of school and college applications. Senior Jamie Stelnik took time to answer some questions involving her experience with the National Charity League and how it affects her. I decided to do a quick interview with her.

What is your favorite philanthropy? And why? “My favorite philanthropy has been Homebase. It is fun cooking a meal with my mom and sister and the kids clap for us at the end, which is nice.” What memories do you have of you and your mother during NCL? “Every time my mom, my sister, and I go to Homebase, we make an impromptu dessert from anything they have in the pantry and it is a great tradition!” What advice would you give to the incoming NCL members? “Make the most of every philanthropy event you volunteer at and really take the time to work with your mom.” How has NCL shaped your perspective of service for the community? “Serving the community not only has brought me immense happiness from seeing my work helping others, but it has also allowed me to grow closer to my mom, which is an unanticipated ‘side-effect.’ This helped show me that serving others can have more benefits than the obvious.” Jamie’s responses demonstrate how NCL not only helps the community, but it helps us, the daughters, spend more quality time with our mothers. As the seniors’ time comes to a close, they will have so many memories to take with them of friends they made and the adventures they had. NCL, Inc. is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong mother-daughter relationships through community service, leadership development, and cultural experiences. Members include girls ranging from 7th to 12th grade along with their mothers. Arizona Humane Society Adoption Spotlight: Hubba Bubba
Your body Loves Flavonols BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER, DC
That’s great, you›re probably thinking .... But what are flavonols? Great question, so let’s start by answering it. Flavonols are phytochemical compounds present in a variety of plant foods and beverages, including broccoli, kale, tomatoes, apples, chives, cranberries, onions, red grapes, sweet cherries, and white currants. In other words, they’re hopefully a part of your daily diet already. But whether you get plenty of flavonols or none, here’s one reason why they’re an important nutritional component to good health: They help lower blood pressure, a leading risk factor for heart attack and stroke. Research findings published in Scientific Reports suggest people who eat a diet that provides the highest 10 percent of flavonols have blood pressure 2-4 mmHg lower than people whose diet provides the lowest 10 percent of flavonols. According to the researchers, this difference in BP is equivalent to that seen in people who eat either the Mediterranean or Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. These findings are notable for two reasons. First, most studies that assess dietary habits rely on self-reported consumption, while this one actually evaluated nutritional biomarkers in the blood. Second, this study involved more than 25,000 people, making it a large study. In general, the larger the study population, the more reliable the results (compared to say, a study of three people, in which results could be due to chance). We started with a question, so let’s end with one: Are you getting enough flavonols in your diet? If you’re only eating a few (or none) of the foods listed above, it’s time to start. Your blood pressure is counting on it.
Hubba Bubba’s (650145) story of survival is one that is truly inspiring no matter if you’re a fan of the classic chewing gum or not. The two-year-old German shepherd mix who was found to be struggling for his life when he somehow fell into a canal in Phoenix. Luckily, local police were able to safely get him out of the freezing waters prior to the arrival of an AHS Emergency Animal Medical Technician™ who quickly worked to get his body temperature up and transported him to the shelter’s hospital immediately. Once in AHS’ care, it was found that this cute boy was hypothermic, had some minor wounds and was a bit lethargic but with some medical care he quickly recovered. Hubba Bubba would do best in a home where his family is patient and allows him to go at his own pace and kids that are at least 10 years of age. With lots of love and consistency, this handsome survivor is sure to be a great companion for his future forever family. All AHS Adoption locations are temporarily closed, but AHS’ Virtual Adoption Matchmaking Program by appointment is available to place pets, like Hubba Bubba, with their forever families! For more information, visit azhumane.org/adopt. Please note: This pet might have been adopted by the time of your Virtual Matchmaking Adoption by Appointment, however AHS has dozens more wonderful pets who also need loving homes. Please take a moment to meet some of the other dogs, cats and other companion animals at the shelter! Interested adopters can view available pets on our Adopt pages on our website, and schedule an appointment online to meet their next furry friend! To see all adoptable animals right now, visit www.azhumane.org/adopt.

Moon Valley Neighborhoods: Shaw Butte A few years ago, I started hiking Shaw Butte regularly and have grown to appreciate this Moon Valley gem, which is practically my back yard. It’s about a 2.8 mile round trip to the summit, with a steady climb up 760 feet in elevation and is considered a moderate trail. As part of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve, it is also a service road, allowing vehicles to drive up to service the cellular towers. Mountain cyclists enjoy the rough challenge as well. The local fire department uses the trail for rescue training. It’s a well-used trail, and local Moon Valley favorite. Many of the regulars call themselves the Shaw Butte Trail Hikers and have formed
BY JULIE PEK long friendships. A lot of problems have been solved on the trail, as hikers share their stories with one another. You hear about their families, friends, health challenges, vacations and you can’t wait to see them again to hear the next installment! This daily climb has been a perfect stress reliever, especially since COVID hit. It’s a great way to stay active outdoors, connect with nature and take advantage of another Moon Valley perk. In the coming editions, you’ll learn more about Shaw Butte and the people who make it their daily routine. In the meantime, best wishes for a wonderful and safe holiday season.

Reflections
THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON
Friends invited us to go to Prime Rib Night at Moon Valley Country Club last weekend. We sat outside on the patio, east of the Grill. We wore our masks until we sat down. The friends we sat with (two other couples) are pretty cautious about social distancing and taking precautions. There were other parties on the patio, but well outside of the prescribed danger zone. My point is that we felt safe. The prime rib was fabulous. I would highly recommend it. We are not members of the Club. We used to be, but when we started thinking about retirement, that was an expense that we eliminated. We were never golfing members. We had a sports membership, which allowed our children to participate in all youth activities and us to work out in the fitness center, plus use all the other amenities of the Club. We joined before our kids were in first grade. They grew up in the pool under the tutelage of Hal Easton. (Our son, Joe, is back coaching swimming on a limited part-time basis). We worked out almost every morning. Christine, Kim, Jan and several others became personal friends. Between swimming and working out, we made so many friends, many of whom we still see regularly. We actually saw some friends the other night that we hadn’t seen recently. It
was fun saying hi. Several said “we read your article in the Tattler.” That’s great. I enjoy doing it and it brings in some business. One high point of the night, was driving past our old home, right across from the club entrance. We down-sized a few years ago and moved a few blocks north to Coral Gables from Moon Valley Drive. We sold to a young couple, Joe and Kristin. As we drove past, Joe was out decorating the front with lights. We stopped and chatted for a minute or two. If they don’t win a decorating award, I will be really surprised. I could blabber on for several more paragraphs, but I will wind down by saying how fortunate we feel to live in Moon Valley. This is our third home within about 10 blocks. Moon Valley Country Club and the Moon Valley Tattler are both such great assets to our area. They both deserve your support. They both have been here longer than I, and I’m old. One last thing, now is a great time to refinance your home, if you haven’t already. A regular refinance or a Reverse Mortgage is very prudent and timely. Check it out. You will be glad you did.
POPULAR REMODELING PROJECTS BY TOM SERTICH Remodeling is important to homeowners who want to stay in their home. Owners that want to stay in their home usually live near family, friends, good neighbors, and great schools. If you decide to move, those homes will also need to be updated. KITCHEN/BATHROOMS: Kitchen and bathroom remodel projects are the most popular. They are both considered the heart of the home. It’s extremely important to address your kitchen and bathrooms needs so they reflect your lifestyle. WHOLEHOUSE: Whole house remodels are becoming more and more popular. Completing your house remodel at one time will get your project done much faster than
completing the work over several years. Whole house remodeling will also save money. WINDOWS/DOORS Changing out your windows and doors at one time will give your home a consistent look. New windows and doors are much more energy efficient and will be reflected on your energy bills. If you want to enjoy the process of planning and designing your new project, call KIRK DEVELOPMENT at 602 944-3658 today for a free estimate.

R U Sure? BLOCK WATCHER BY BLANCHE LUKES R U Sure... You’re fit as a fiddle! You’re disciplined! I see you riding your bikes religiously every morning and it is still dark. Some of you have flashing lights and/or reflectors on your bikes even a reflective bright shirt Yippee But a lot of you and the walkers wear dark clothes What! Moon Valley has no street lights and you walk the dark streets in BLACK! The speed limit is 25 mph. Want to bet as to the percentage of people that honor that? One distraction in the car and they have traveled how many feet? I am told it is approximately 37 feet a second almost half of the front of a house. Then they look up and there is someone I think it is a person but it is so dark Bam an Accident waiting to happen! Use common sense. Wear bright reflective clothing AND have flashing bike lights as well as defensive skills. One of the unique qualities of the Moon Valley Area is the no street lights. It provides nighttime beauty no other part of the Valley has. Take time to breath in the beauty of the sky, stars, Moon, whatever has presented itself to you at that time. Generation Z – The Buick Encore BY JOHAN SWART, CORNEL SWART & JAN SWART Recently we rented a vehicle from Hertz to travel to California; Hertz delivered the wrong size vehicle and we ended up with a Buick Encore. Disgruntled with ending up with a Buick, but not having time to exchange the vehicle, we decided to use this tiny SUV and made the trip. We had not really paid attention to Buick’s in the USA, but having travelled to China many times, we were always amazed to see so many Buick and older model Volkswagen sedans being used as taxis and chauffeured transport vehicles. So we decided to look at bit deeper into Buick and what we found was quite surprising! We found that in 2017, Buick apparently sold 1.4 million vehicles but the real surprise is that 80% were sold in China! Even more interestingly, we found that Buick played a major role in the USA vehicle industry. Seems the first two Buick automobiles were made in 1899 and 1900 by the Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company. The company owner David Dunbar Buick first focused on making engines for stationary and marine engine production. In 1904, a patent for the first overhead valve engine (OHV), patent, number 771,095, was awarded. This type of engine design is the fundamental engine head design principal currently used in modern engine design. The company name changed to the Buick Motor Company, and was moved from Detroit to Flint, Michigan. Automobile production quickly increased topping close competitors like Oldsmobile, Ford, and Maxwell. Buick then developed the boxer engine which was the foundation of the highly successful Beetle engine. In the 1950s, Buick also developed the all-aluminum 3.5 liter V8 engine which they then decided was too expensive to build and sold the engine rights to British Motor Corporation (BMC). This engine powered many BMC vehicles that had a “Rover” in its name for nearly 40 years – it was hailed as one of the most reliable engines ever made. Eventually David Buick sold Buick Motor Company in 1906, to William C Durant, who then in 1908 founded General Motors. Buick was incorporated under GM and the rest is history. So, we were curious to see how good the Buick Encore was and whether the pioneering Buick spirit was still alive? The Buick Encore is a small SUV powered by a 1.4liter turbocharged engine making 138 horse power at 4900 rpm and 148 lb.-ft of torque at a low 1850 rpm. Its power delivery falls pretty much in line with the new modern small capacity European turbo engines and hence developing lots of torque similar to a diesel engine. We got 27mpg on our trip which was okay and the boxy shape likely contributed to this. This engine worked well and felt powerful enough although turbo lag was evident and definitely does not have the Buick heritage of fine engines. The interior looked functional and the chrome features on the knobs gave the dashboard a bit of an upmarket feel although the plastics in the center console did not carry through to the door panels. A person sits high,
Call us: 602.765.0902
typical of an SUV and leg space was like baby bears porridge – just right. The seats were comfortable and the ride smooth and quiet. We were impressed with the fact that the baby Buick took us to California and back without leaving us with body aches and feeling quite fresh after the trip. This is definitely a vehicle that does as well in the city as it does on the open road. The 8” LCD display was clear and featured Apple play and Android Auto. Apparently, Alexa is also available but be careful, Alexa will now listen to you in your car as well! Safety features available were Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency
Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Following Distance Indicator, IntelliBeam® auto high beams and Front Pedestrian Braking. Then there is a 5/5 NHTSA overall safety rating as well. Quite impressive. At a starting price of $23K, this baby Buick is not really a bargain. This is one of the criticism in Europe as well – expensive for what you get. Reviews of this car in Europe were not really favorable and in the US Car and Driver magazine gave it a 6.5/10 rating. However this contrast between our experience and the press reviews reminded us of some movie reviews we read in the past that were very negative, although we thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Yes, its shape is awkward, nearly like a Noddy car, but it is this shape that provides for a very comfortable spacious interior – so we guess practicality before styling was the order of the day. The Buick Encore is also sold as a Chevy Trax and in Europe as the Opel or Vauxhall Mokka – sadly it is an Opel product and GM literally only changed the badges and labeling based on the country the vehicle is sold in. So is the Buick spirit still alive? – The answer is no – not in this baby Buick. However, the odd shape, safety and modern technology features at least break the bonds of the “old-person Buick” image and this car is youthful, modern and fun to drive. The baby Buick is not a pedigree Buick but should definitely be on the GenZ shortlist!

Give Your Input! FundPHX Budget Planning BY COUNCILWOMAN DEBR A STARK The City of Phoenix is already planning for next year’s city budget—and we need your input to help shape a budget that reflects the priorities of Phoenix residents! FundPHX is an interactive online tool that was launched earlier this year to help residents better understand how the budget is created, to provide the opportunity to engage in the City’s annual budget process, and to promote transparency. The City of Phoenix’s $1.4 billion General Fund operating budget funds services that residents in the nation’s fifth-largest city depend on daily. These services include police, fire, libraries, parks, streets, senior centers, public works, and so much more—all services that affect residents’ daily lives. Every year, the City of Phoenix must pass a balanced budget, as required by City Charter. Phoenix’s participatory budget process includes ample opportunities for public comment and engagement. Now, the process is even more accessible with the FundPHX tool, which is available in English and Spanish. FundPHX allows residents to try their hand at balancing the City’s $1.4 billion General Fund operating budget. With the interactive tool, residents can see for themselves what each service costs and how much it would cost (or save) to change service levels. Residents can also give feedback on current funding
levels and share community priorities with staff. As residents interact with the tool, more information is available at their fingertips. Each area in the tool is also linked to the citywide inventory of programs to provide more detail by department. Residents can also access previous publications, budget documents, budget process calendars, and more by visiting phoenig.gov/budget. With the FundPHX tool, engaging in the City’s annual budget process is something residents can do safely at home. The Budget and Research Department will gather feedback monthly and share it with the City Council, city management, and departments to help guide development of the 2021-22 operating budget. We want to know what is important to you! Try the FundPHX tool today at phoenix.gov/fundphx.
Bicycle Tires How long do tires last? Normal riding 3 to 5 thousand miles sounds like a lot but it adds up faster than you think. Sometimes they crack and dry out from no use. Tires with Kevlar or sort of shield last even longer. How smooth they feel when riding depends on tread design smooth, nobby, center ridged, ect. Same goes for sound smoother quieter tire. Sometimes tires with Kevlar beads can be noise don’t grip the rim as tight. Traction to the road depends on soft or hard tires. Soft more traction less tire life. Hard tires last longer but have less grip. You are riding on tires check for cuts, bald spots and glass so they don’t leave you down. Tires hold you up! Leon Try Me Bicycle Shop

ASK Gen-E: Your Tech Questions Answered!
Sponsored by Generation Tech Support
Dear Gen-E,
My grandkids are very techie. I am so lost with tech stuff but I want to be the coolest grandma ever. What should I get them for holiday gifts? Rockstar WannaBe Dear Rockstar, Ooooh, I’m so excited you asked this! There’s so much fun stuff out there! Let’s shop!! First stop, Geekstore where you can find cool sweaters that grandmothers always seem to love to give kids. But this time, yours will sport their favorite superhero or game icon. Cool right? Next up is ThinkGeek found inside of Amazon now, has quirky and very geeky gifts. Hence the name. Uncommon goods and Etsy are speciality online shops and showcase unique items. Enter “Tech” in their search bar and you’ll get some super nifty ideas. (Does anyone actually say nifty anymore?) Sharper Image has some very, over the top, awesome toys including remote control cars, drones and other flying things. But this year, they are featuring some virtual play toys like Pong and Space Blaster. VR is very hot in the tech world. Here’s a relatively unknown gem: Blinks Move38. Look it up. Totally cutting edge. Lights up and wraps like a sushi roll. Whoa.. Video Gaming! Yes kids love gaming and if you want to get into that arena here are a few thoughts. The Nintendo Switch system is pretty popular this year and kids can use it as a home game console and a handheld. It has a great library of excellent games to play on TVs too. It’ll set you back about $300 but a lighter version is available for a lot less that is still pretty cool. Video games are always a blast to receive and generally cost about $60 to $70 bucks. Of course it’s important to know the system your kids have. Just ask casually around the dinner table, “So, um, Jared you have an Xbox One or 360? Or is that a Playstation 4? Or 5? (which was released like yesterday) at your house?” Those questions will win you
granny points BIG time! Browsing around the internet looking at sites with titles like “Best Techie Gifts for Kids 2020” or “Cnet Best Tech Toys 2020” will spark some creative ideas. Being the caring grandmother that you appear to be, let’s give this some thought. You might ask, ‘Can we sneak in some learning while they’re having so much fun they don’t even notice?’ Purely as your tech advice robot here...yes. Amazing options that are out there are OSMO, Little Bits, Parallax Robotics, inventr.io, Spheros, Arduino’s and some old favorites; Vex, Lego/Mindstorms and Hot Wheels NEW ID Smart Track which has an NFC chip that kids can control race cars, laps and record stats on a phone. (Hello data analyst career). Finally, if you’re venturing out into the real world talking to real people in real stores, Best Buy has offerings in AR/VR games and adventures like the Oculus. Don’t forget Fry’s electronics. (You did.. until right this second didn’t you?) Obviously, this is a very small part of what’s out there, but this should get you started in the right direction. Which will link you to another link, and then another link, and then another link, finding just the perfect gift from the perfect, rockstar, grandmother that you totally are for even asking such a cool question! Happy Holidays! Always here to help! Geek Love Gen-E

Ready M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C BY D EB B I E ER BS TO E SSER I don’t think I’ve ever been so ready for Christmas and apparently I am not alone. As I drive and walk through the neighborhood, there are many who have already decorated their yards and houses. Mind you I’m writing this in mid-November. I don’t remember ever seeing so many places decorated this early. When I asked Gary how he felt about putting our tree up early, he looked at me like I was an alien. He knows that Thanksgiving has been my favorite holiday since our boys were little and I never, ever impose one holiday on another. A week later around Halloween, I got a great idea from the radio. A man called in to say they too were ready for Christmas, but didn’t want to overshadow Thanksgiving, so they put up their tree and everyone in the family wrote words of thanks to hang on it. I took it to the next level and Gary had buy-in. . .as long as he wasn’t expected to put up the lights outside, he was game for the tree inside. I wish I’d had this idea sooner so I could share it with you, my readers. Suddenly I had something to look forward to and be truly happy about, because outside our home, the world is a scary place right now. I took this man’s idea and embellished it by stringing white lights on the tree, no ornaments or tree skirt. We’ll put on the colored lights, ornaments and crown our tree after Thanksgiving. Each of us is writing a heartfelt letter to everyone else in our family. A note with words of praise, thanks and love will be something we can all hold onto
for many years to come and of course we’re dating them; Thanksgiving 2020. We’ll all have 4 envelopes to open and they will remain private unless anyone chooses to share. I know I can count on my boys to write something sweet, as they’re good at that. I am ready for this whole ordeal of covid, lockdowns, virtual teaching, masks, and no hugs to be over. I am ready for the warm and fuzzy feelings, sights and sounds of “Peace and Goodwill.” While I am not going so far as to play Christmas music, I am enjoying the lights. Sitting in the early morning darkness looking at a lit tree is one of my most favorite things to do in December and the only reason I’m sad to take it down afterwards. I am so ready for Dan and Larcy’s giant wreath and four words of Advent to go up on the wall at the end of our cul-de-sac. It always makes me smile as I turn onto our street to go home. While I’m ready for the tree and festive lights, I’m not so much for any major decorating. There won’t be a staff, friend or neighbor party this year. Even so, my idea of ‘toning down’ the décor a few years ago had John and Carolina dropping their jaws. John said, “This is toning it down?” Indeed it was and this year there will be even less. November 2020 marks the 12th year that I’ve been writing MVM-Moon Valley Magic. As my friend Gwen said, it has changed. I had young boys 12 years ago at Lookout Mt and Mt Sky Jr. High where I was the PTO president. I also had 13 different volunteer positions I juggled between their schools, sports and our church. I wrote about all of it, and how our little ‘Pocket of Paradise’ here in Moon Valley had such an effect on everything; from the moms of the PTO and dads of Shaw Butte Little League, to the luscious green of our tree lined streets. My boys are now 25, 23, and 20. I’m not a stay at home mom anymore. I’ve been back in the classroom for 8 years now. I’m not ready to retire again just yet, nor am I ready to stop writing. Somehow I keep coming up with ideas!?! There might be months that I skip now and then, but for the most part, I’ll keep writing MVM. May Peace and Joy be with you all with a sprinkling of the Magic that marks this Season and our neighborhood. Debbie Erbstoesser has lived in Moon Valley for 30 years, is a mother of 3 adult sons and has been married to Gary, her friend from High School, for 36 years.
