Volunteering strengthens mother-daughter bond BY JULIE ALEJANDRO The bond a mother shares with her daughter is precious in many ways and volunteering together can have a long-lasting impact. Creating a solid foundation and raising kids who are philanthropically minded is not easy. However, instilling beliefs in teens about giving back to others in the community will help build a more thoughtful, kinder, more considerate group of humans. This is one goal of National Charity League. The National Charity League, Inc. (NCL) is a multi-generational philanthropic organization founded in 1925 with the mission of fostering mother-daughter relationships through the ongoing commitment to philanthropy, culture, and leadership. Leading with hearts and hands to ensure thriving communities. “I love NCL because I am able to spend time with each of my daughters, serving others in the community. Over our 6-year journey, my relationship with each of my daughters grows in many positive ways.” says Shelly Chang, NCL Moon Valley Chapter President. A newer member to NCL, Kirsten says “We are only just beginning our second year in NCL. During the past year, my daughter has gone from being nervous in new situations to embracing them. She now is more aware of the needs of those around her, becoming more compassionate, and is looking for ways to help on her own.” Julie, a NCL member for over 4 years says “My daughter and I love volunteering and having that special time together. Plus, having volunteered at over fifteen local philanthropies, she now understands the importance of giving back to the community.” Research also shows that volunteering boosts self-confidence and happiness in teens and teaches social and networking skills. These skills are invaluable for youth as they prepare to shape the future. We welcome families to learn more about NCL and our upcoming fall enrollment. NCL celebrates its 97th anniversary this year. Members of NCL volunteers nearly 3 million hours to more than 6,000 charities each year creating a $68 million philanthropic impact. There are 287 chapters in 31 states with roughly 200,000 members. New membership drive begins on November 1st. For more information or to learn about joining NCL, please visit our website at nationalcharityleague.org/chapter/moonvalley or send an email to membershipmoonvalley@nclonline.org.

“ TRAPPED IN MOON VALLEY
LET TER FROM THE EDITOR
I love the pop and circumstance for “back to school”, it’s so fun to shop for new clothes deciding on which new edgy style we are going to sport this year, picking out all new notebooks, pens and the traditions of that “first day of- “photo shoot with all your siblings, that is compared to the year before. I think that I really miss school, oh how many years ago, we would want summer to last forever, now I would jump at the chance to sit in a classroom, see all my friends, plan for dances and afterschool outings, but more so to have the opportunity to learn more. Fill my brain with new topics and start planning for all the new business plans that swirl around in my head.
I can hardly believe that my 40 something class reunion is on the horizon and the reality of attending school again is probably long gone for me, oh I still learn something new every day, but it is more in the arena of “hard knocks” everyday life and gleaming knowledge from all the young and brilliant staff and associates I surround my life with. Signing up for new masterminds, podcasts and zooms have become such a great and interesting way to learn so much, and the world wide web is still the source for never ending knowledge. But I am still going to go shopping for the new school styles, changing up last year’s fashion and sharpening my wardrobe, getting a new haircut (ok, ok-maybe a little color as well!!) and sign up for some new classes at the gym. I encourage you to reminisce on your old school days, call an old friend, hit the shops for all the great sales, and catch up on some of that sleep you lost during “those long summer nights.”

Rookie Mom: 6 Things We’re Telling Our Family & Friends Before Baby #2 is Born B Y B R I G H I D CO N S TA B L E Right now, I am 32-weeks pregnant. I have done pretty much everything differently than I did with my first birth to avoid the naivety, shame, postpartum depression that my husband and I journeyed through together in 2017. And in 3 weeks, I plan to send… The Letter. What is The Letter, you might ask? The Letter is a set of boundaries that you email your close friends and family members who you plan to be involved (whether you want them to or not) during and shortly after birth. When I first read The Letter, it was from my sister-in-law and my brother many years ago. To be honest, when I scrolled through the email, it came across as obvious. One of their requests was to not post anything about the birth until it was officially announced by her and my brother. Therefore, when I was first pregnant, I just thought common sense was the name of the game by both my friends and family members. Oh, how I was wrong… Actually, I’ve already drafted the email that I plan to send at 35-weeks pregnant to my in-laws, siblings and mother, and friends JUST in case I’ve missed anything that might pop up within these next 3 weeks. But here are the highlights: 1. Don’t post anything about the birth of my child on social media. 2. The labor room is for mom and dad ONLY – of course with the help of our doula and midwife. 3. Our daughter is the first and only person who can visit the hospital
as we focus this time with her bond with her baby brother. 4. The first week at home is for family adjustment, so keep the visits short! ;) 5. Please do not kiss our newborn! 6. And if you plan to visit us, please call ahead! Let’s face it: Our family is incredibly blessed to have so many people love and be excited for us, but sometimes that well-intentioned love also needs steel-plated boundaries. It can be tough to have the courage to communicate this – even if it seems apparent – but ultimately it’s for the health of MY family – and myself. And that’s what matters the most during this happy transition.

Updates from Councilwoman Debra Stark Over the past couple years, I have been asked about the plans for the vacant lot at 13620 N. 7th Street (just north of the Safeway on Thunderbird Road). In 2019, the owner’s team submitted plans to the city for a 132-bed assisted living and memory care facility with oneand two-story portions. After the Planning and Development Department submitted comments to the architect from the first review of the plans, the department did not hear back from the applicant. The original preliminary project approval was from 2015. The project has stalled since, and the plans have now expired as of July. At this time, the city is unaware of any new plans for the vacant lot. Any blight concerns at this lot—or any other property—can be reported to the Neighborhood Services Department by emailing blight@phoenix. gov or calling 602-534-4444. Additionally, blight can be reported online at phoenix.gov/myPHX311 or on the free app myPHX311. Common blight complaints include overgrown vegetation, junk, debris, trash, fences in disrepair, outside storage, graffiti, and non-dust-proof parking. With vacant lots, dust kicking up can become a problem. To report dust complaints from vacant lots or construction sites, contact the Maricopa County Air Quality Department at 602-372-2703.
Another topic my office receives questions about is how HOAs can conserve water, as a large portion of HOA costs can come from landscaping. In fact, most of Phoenix customers’ water use is outdoors, according to the Water Services Department. The City of Phoenix offers a Water Efficiency Program for HOAs. This free program can help HOAs come up with a budget and a plan to reduce water usage and increase efficiency. According to the Water Services Department, about half of outdoor water use is wasted due to inefficient watering systems. If your HOA is interested, Water Services staff can provide a presentation to your HOA board, landscape contractor, and property manager. For more information on how to participate, visit .phoenix.gov/water/hoa, and contact conservation@ pheonix.gov with any questions. With the City of Phoenix recently declaring a Stage 1 water alert and activating the City’s Drought Management Plan, we are asking all residents to do their part and voluntarily reduce their water use. Over the years, Phoenix has made wise investments to ensure a 100-year water supply. During a Stage 1 alert, the City of Phoenix is focusing on educating customers about our resources and water usage. To learn more about the recent Stage 1 alert, visit www. phoenix.gov/newsroom/water-services/2363. To report water waste, please call 602-262-6251.

After 13 years, you should know that I endeavor to remain positive. I started out writing about our neighborhood schools, but once our boys went on to college my topics branched out…well even before that. Remember the tree one? I snapped a shot of my 3 precious joys walking to school with our oldest one, Jon, pushing his saxophone in Jaden’s old stroller. It wasn’t until the picture came back from the print shop (yes, it was that long ago), that I realized how green our Moon Valley is. With gas prices so high I usually walk to Anytime Fitness. There is so much to love about that place. Besides being able to walk there, I don’t offend anyone with my RBF and Mission to Accomplish, meaning; get in and get out because it’s been a day! The membership is more than the big gyms and that’s okay because it’s smaller, cleaner and not as crowded. It also includes unlimited access. So if I want to go there twice a day every day that is okay. It’s truly unlimited. Once when our water was shut off, I also took my shower there. It was so very convenient. Though we aren’t 65 quite yet, Medicare folks can get their membership for free. Many Medicare supplement plans offer a free gym membership. The insurance company pays the gym on a per visit basis. My friend Kathy told Gwen and me about it…yes Gwen and me, not Gwen and I. Kathy said that she and Mark felt guilty not paying a dime. What an amazing deal. I’d been dreading Medicare until I heard that bit of news! The ‘M’ word leads me to my next PSA…and this is a sad one. As we age we need less food. This was a tough one for me. I was always a big eater. My mother nicknamed me ‘Stomach’ because I could put away food, yet remain skinny. Well… age set in with osteoporosis, I shrunk almost 2 inches on top of being hypothyroid. Luckily I got a handle on my eating after starting keto and intermittent fasting 2 years ago. I’m now thinner than I’ve been in 40 years. The fact is, from what I’ve read, neither heavy or thin people live the longest, but rather those at a healthy weight. Diet and Exercise work together. You have to eat less and exercise! While on the topic of food I have to mention Carolina’s tortillas. In my humble opinion they are the best in the whole, wide world. I used to teach in the Roosevelt School District in South Phoenix and discovered the original Carolina’s then. After I ‘retired’ to be a SAHM (Stay at Home Mom) I’d drive 30 mins with my boys to buy their amazing, gigantic, flour tortillas. Now there is a local Carolina’s near the NE corner of Cave Creek and Thunderbird (where it becomes Cactus). I don’t do gluten, except for an occasional, fresh, warm tortilla. They are heaven. My summer is over and going through closets, drawers and cabinets is winding down. I came across some of the boys dress shirts that are too small, but Mt. Sky Jr. High will take them! They appreciate these dress clothes for the 8th grade promotion, (not graduation-because seriously, what are you going to do with an 8th grade diploma?). I donated the boys Thunderbird and University of Arizona (same exact color and style) caps and gowns to Thunderbird for their May graduation. Speaking of donating, I had no idea that tipping was a thing at Discount Tire when they put air in your tires for free. Some poor soul is out there in the heat, cold and rain. It’s got to be a dreadfully awful job. It’s kind of shocking that it hadn’t occurred to me, but Gary asked and turns out it is a thing. So! Tip! Finally, while she doesn’t accept tips, Kristen Hustead from Wellbalanced Farm a Healing Place for Body, Mind and Spirit is worth every penny. Kristen has been my friend since our 26 year olds were three. She is a Fascial Stretch Therapist, Reiki Practitioner, Grief and Trauma Specialist and yoga practitioner. I started seeing Kristen professionally for my neck. She not only fixed it, but she healed my spirit and I didn’t even know I needed it. Her words of wisdom and her healing touch are magical. As a Christian, she gives all the glory to God. She’s incredibly humble and kind. Just being around her is calming. Now that she and Mike have moved up to Camp Verde to start the Farm, it’s a little more difficult to carve out the time to get up there, but once you’ve arrived, their place overwhelms you with peace. It truly is a healing farm. You can find her on Facebook and Instagram.

Let’s Talk About Caffeine
BY AN DY FEI GUM , FI T N E SS D I R . AT AN Y T I M E FI T N E SS Caffeine is a natural stimulant most commonly found in tea, coffee, and cacao plants. It works by stimulating the brain and central nervous system, helping you stay alert and prevent the onset of tiredness. Once consumed, caffeine is quickly absorbed from the gut into the bloodstream. That said, caffeine’s main effect is on the brain. It functions by blocking the effects of adenosine, which is a neurotransmitter that relaxes the brain and makes you feel tired. Because of its ability to stimulate the central nervous system, caffeine may increase metabolism by up to 11% and fat burning by up to 13%. Practically speaking, consuming 300 mg of caffeine per day may allow you to burn an extra 79 calories daily. This amount may seem small, but it’s similar to the calorie excess responsible for the average yearly weight gain of 2.2 pounds (1 kg) in Americans. When it comes to exercise, caffeine may increase the use of fat as fuel. This is beneficial because it can help the glucose stored in muscles last longer, potentially delaying the time it takes your muscles to reach exhaustion. Caffeine may also improve muscle contractions and increase tolerance to fatigue. Caffeine consumption is generally considered safe, although habit forming. Some side effects linked to excess intake include anxiety, restlessness, tremors, irregular heartbeat, and trouble sleeping. Too much caffeine may also promote headaches, migraine, and high blood pressure in some individuals. Caffeine can also interact with some medications. Both the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) consider a daily intake of 400 mg of caffeine to be safe. This amounts to 2–4 cups of coffee per day. Generally speaking research has shown that caffeine, when consumed in moderate doses, can affect the body and mind in numerous positive ways, however, everybody has different levels of caffeine tolerance so proceed with a bit of caution when it comes to your personal daily intake.

ENTANGLED LIFE: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change our Minds and Shape Our Futures by Merlin Sheldrake By Frosty Kroening
I did not know that a white rot fungus can help prevent bee mortality. I also did not know that furniture can be made from fungi. Mycelium foam, an interesting fungus phenomenon, grows quickly, is dried, and can be used for bricks and packing materials. A company called Ecovative is “inventing” multiple uses for this new “technology.” Some mushrooms are used by surgeons to assist healing in human skin. And some may replace graphite in lithium batteries. Many exciting uses for fungal plants are being discovered. Yet we have not fully understood or protected existing fungi in our world. They are very essential soil components for growing our food and fibers. Entangled Life is a fascinating book to read in summertime because it stimulates thoughts of the possibilities of all we humans can co-create to restore and, hopefully, improve the world. The author travels to interesting places to discover uses of fungi. He asks questions like: “Are network-based life-forms like fungi or slime molds capable of a form of cognition? Can we think of their behavior as intelligent?” If these questions sound like science fiction, Merlin Sheldrake produces citations for all the real work being done on fungi research. He is excited about the promise of new and historic uses of fungi. In addition, he is very caught up in apple cider production. In our stores now are many fermented fruit ciders. Fungi can eat rock, build soil, digest pollutants, nourish and kill plants, survive in space, induce visions, produce food, make medicines and so much more! They are in us and around us, though we do not see most fungi. The author’s fascination with fungi is humbling and exciting! The book is available at the Phoenix Public Library, Amazon, Target, and a downloadable reading is available free at archive.org/details/entangled life.

ramblings
THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON
If this piece seems like I’m rambling, perhaps I am. There are a couple of things on which I would like to expound that do not constitute a full article. Just a few weeks ago purchasing a home in which to live was a real chore. Although interest was artificially low, prices were through the roof. Investors were paying over asking price, they were paying in cash and sometimes waiving home inspections. There was a real bidding war going on and the individual buyer was often precluded from even getting into the fray. When I initially got into the housing market in the 1970s, we had to buy a starter home. Something within our budget and the interest rate was in the mid 7% range. The idea was to pay down the mortgage, and with annualized appreciation of about 5% in the Phoenix area, in a few years we would have accrued enough equity to parlay into a nicer home in a nicer neighborhood. There is a whole generation out there that thinks a starter home is in the half-million-dollar range. At a 3% interest rate, the principal and interest payment on a $500,000 mortgage is about $2100 per month. This is doable. At 5.5% this payment will support a mortgage of about $322,000. If the budget is stretched to allow a $2100 PI payment, the buyer may have to settle for less home. I’m not economist, and I’m not trying to second-guess the mortgage interest market. But, if interest continues to rise, it will probably force these investors to curb their buying spree. The cost of their money will simply be too high. (You didn’t think they were using their own money, did you?) A Realtor friend recently told me that two investor groups, of which he had knowledge, backed out of every escrow that they could when the Fed hiked their rates by .5%. I suspect higher rates will help bring super-inflated prices more back in line, and individual buyers will again have of a chance. According to Zillow
and Redfin, my home in Moon Valley more than doubled in value since 2017. Did it really? Maybe so, but I bet I would be hard pressed to sell for the prices shown on these two apps. I’m hoping the home market will normalize and we can get back to a thriving but affordable scenario. The mortgage industry has hit a lull, it will come back, but in what form? It may take a few years to put this frenzy behind us. In a slightly different but related vein, I do a fair number of Reverse Mortgages each year. Universally, the snippet I hear the most from skeptical seniors, is that the mortgage lender is “trying to get my home.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Lenders do not want to have to foreclose on your property. They just want to get paid according to the terms of the contract. Mortgages, and especially Reverse Mortgages, are very safe and secure investments. When a lender has to foreclose, the cost of disposing of that property sucks all the juice out of the deal. They have to have a special department to handle these repossessed assets, thus, extra salaries, reconditioning expenditures, sales commissions, etc. Lenders do not want your home. They just want to get paid! My suggestion, if you are still in the housing market, now is a good time to explore your options. It doesn’t cost anything to look and you just might stumble into a really good deal. Find a trusted Realtor and mortgage loan officer and realistically assess what you can afford. Get Pre-Qualified so you can strike while the iron is hot. You will be glad you did. - Gerry Johnson -

DO YOU KNOW? BLOCK WATCHER BY BLANCHE LUKES That was my wish in a previous article that we all got to know our neighbors. The beautiful part of having a Block Captain for each block. If not only for just caring about one’s neighbors, what if there was a real disaster? I am hoping that the disheartening media news doesn’t become a reality, But what if there was a disaster! Who helps who and who may need help? You or maybe the neighbor down the street. It may seem early to be talking about our Annual Gain Day event on the third Saturday of October. That would be October 15th, 2022. Plan to do a pot luck or ice cream social on your driveway. Mine is between 5 and 7pm . As you may know Moon Valley was organized in the early 1970’s with a Block Captain/Representative on each block. Wes Harris and yours truly set it up, however there was a group of original owners that started the tradition as the developers started to build the homes around the golf course. Hopefully your block has remained active. That person may be the good doby that delivers the candles for our Christmas Eve illuminaria. What a wonderful tradition. Some of our Moon Valley neighbors go all out and decorate their houses spectacularly. What a treat to drive down the streets lined with 24,000 bags with lite candles. I sure hope we keep that tradition alive. If you or a neighbor will be gone that evening please arrange for someone to light them for you. Thank you to the volunteer Neighborhood Association for picking up the cost, buying the bags and candles, and then getting to the block captains. So the minimal annual dues one pays provides our spectacular Christmas tradition. I think they also have a committee that judges the houses and provides an award. Let’s keep this going. Thanks to all you volunteers out there. Blanche Lukes@cox.net MoonValley Block Watch
Home resources: searching for a realtor BY JULIE PEK
Selling or buying a home is a big financial decision. As with any other important decision, it’s wise to make an educated one. Finding the right realtor will help you. I recommend that you invest the time and talk with at least 3 agents before committing to work with one. Here are some questions to ask if you’re selling your home: 1. How will you price my home to get the maximum dollar? A knowledgeable realtor will show you comparable sales, current market trends, condition and features of your home. They can even suggest inexpensive repairs/improvements to enhance the value. 2. What do you know about my neighborhood? It’s best to talk to realtors that live and work in your community. They will have first-hand knowledge and are vested in getting you the highest price for your home. 3. What will you do to market my home? Putting a sign out front is not the only way to market a home. You are paying them to sell your home. Talk to a realtor about their plans to bring in buyers and get the word out about your home. 4. How much will it cost me? It’s a good idea to have a full understanding of all costs. Watch out for hidden costs by some companies. 5. How do you communicate? Phone, text, email and what happens if you go on vacation? How quickly will you get back to me? The best realtors answer their phones and have colleagues to cover for them while they’re out of town. Today it’s easy to go online and select a realtor without too much thought or difficulty. But if you consider the financial risks involved, you owe it to yourself to find out more than what an online review has to say. Next month: Selecting a Buyer’s Agent. Call me if you have any questions about selling in Moon Valley! Photo: Moon Valley Realtor Tour sponsored by Old Republic Title and Caliber Loans.

Estate Planning - who needs it? BY LIBBY BANK S, PLLC, THE L AW OFFICE OF LIBBY BANK S Who Needs Estate Planning? Many people, when they hear the words “estate planning,” don’t think it applies to them. “I don’t have an estate to plan!” they may say. I think this comes about from the use of the word “estate.” The word is often used to refer to the mansions and real estate holdings of the rich and famous. But the definition of an estate is “all of the things that a person owns.” In other words, your estate is the sum of your stuff: your home, your bank accounts, your stocks and bonds, your retirement account, your cars and boat, and your personal property. For some, including young parents, the biggest asset at death will be their life insurance policy. When they say they don’t have an estate, they are forgetting about what they leave behind with insurance. Big or small, most adults have an estate of some sort. If you don’t plan for it, don’t worry, the state has a plan for you; it just may not be what you want. Estate Planning is More than Distributing What You Own at Your Death While a large portion of estate planning is determining how your estate will be distributed at death, a good estate planner is doing much more. The estate planning professional should assure that you have the right things in place in case you become incapacitated. Who will manage your assets and your financial affairs if you can’t? Who will make decisions about your healthcare? With proper planning, you decide that and make sure that the person you choose can quickly take charge of your legal and financial matters. Without proper planning someone will have to ask the court to appoint them as conservator of your finances and guardian of your person. You can’t guarantee it will be who you would choose. I can guarantee it will be a time-consuming, expensive, and public proceeding for you and your family.
Protect
Putting an Estate Plan in Place Means More than Writing a Will As you may already have surmised, a Will isn’t going to be enough. If you are alive but can’t take care of your financial matters, a Will doesn’t help you – it’s only effective upon your death. Instead, you need a Will along with a whole series of other documents to assure that you have a proper estate plan. For someone to handle your financial affairs while you are incapacitated, you need a Durable Power of Attorney. You need a Healthcare Power of Attorney to appoint who you want to make health care decisions if you can’t. At my office, we also do a general release to permit your financial and health caregivers access to your medical records, which can be difficult with the federal HIPPA laws preventing disclosure. Avoiding Probate at Your Death Is Important Too Most of my clients come in wanting to avoid probate. This is an important part of estate planning as well. We have several methods to do this, all of which protect you while you are still living, but still provide for an easy distribution at your death. Homemade probate avoidance techniques, like putting one of your children as a joint owner of your bank accounts or other assets can have disastrous consequences. Estate Planning is one place where getting an expert involved can save your family great time, expense, and heartache. Revocable Living Trusts are Great for Incapacity Planning and Distributing Your Assets One of the most effective ways to address planning for your incapacity and for your death is the Revocable Living Trust – all without court intervention. The Revocable Living Trust: + Is controlled by you until you are incapacitated or pass on + Is readily accepted by financial institutions + Provides detailed instructions and directions from you to your successor trustee + Holds your successor trustee to a high fiduciary standard + Allows your successor trustee to quickly and efficiently begin managing your assets to care for you and your finances during incapacity, or to manage and distribute your assets on death Learn More About Estate Planning I try to make it easy to learn more about estate planning. My website (www. libbybanks.com) has lots of information. I also offer a free initial consultation where we can discuss your specific situation and what estate plan will work best for your situation. Call the office at 602-375-6752 to schedule your meeting.
Your family deserves to be provided for after you’re gone.

Daisy – 688524
Adorable Daisy is as cute as her name suggests via/ take off massage and an even bigger goofball than her picture Please send one moreThe proof, shows. hugethanks love bug was surrendered to the Arizona Humane Society in April of this year after it was found that she prefers to have all eyes on her and not let anyone get an ounce of love from her people that she deserves. Very rightly, of course! Those who have been lucky enough to get to know the three-years-young Boxer say she is a shy but charming pup who would love a home that will allow her to blossom. As a very smart and energetic pup, she also loves to have lots of puzzle toys and slow feeders around to allow her to not only get some tasty treats but also enable her to use her brain with lots of mental stimulation. Additionally, Daisy’s nubby tail really gets going when she gets her favorite type of pets – booty scratches! The Arizona Humane Society’s Virtual Matchmaking Adoptions by appointment is available to place pets with their forever families. Interested adopters can view available pets, like diligent Daisy, and schedule an appointment online at azhumane.org/adopt. Additionally, Daisy’s adoption fee is waived to help her find her forever home. Please note: This pet might have been adopted by the time of your Virtual Matchmaking Adoption by Appointment, however AHS has dozens more wonderful pets who also need loving homes. Please take a moment to meet some of the other dogs, cats and other companion animals at the shelter! Interested adopters can view available pets on our Adopt pages on our website, and schedule an appointment online to meet their next furry friend! At the start of 2022 I was nominated and then elected the Moon Valley Neighborhood Association President. One of my duties as president is to come up with a monthly article for the tattler. We value our partnership with the Tattler and hope we bring some value to this relationship. I do have a few Tattler articles under my belt now and if you’ve read any of my past one you may have noticed a common tone to them. I will always offer up a way to get involved or to share your voice. This article will have that same common theme, but be a little more direct. Moon Valley needs help. I’ve spent 7 plus years volunteering for our neighborhood on the MVNA board and have only seen a small group participate. I am in no way asking for a huge time commitment, or for you to cut back hours at work to volunteer. I’m asking for an hour or two a month tops. Current needs would be for committee members. Below is a list of committees and their current state. Camping Without Guilt BY CHARLOTTE BROOKS
Many many summers ago our ten-year-old son went to camp. I thought it was going to be wonderful. He was less than enthused about the whole idea…to put it mildly. What did we know; it was the first time for both of us. My apprehension peaked as we arrived at the Y.M.C.A. Four huge buses were rapidly filling with what looked like hundreds of little campers. The children were boarding the buses with backpacks, sleeping bags, boxes of Twinkies, and varying degrees of enthusiasm. I helped Brian stow his duffle bag and Star Wars pillow in the luggage compartment. The smile on my face disguised my certainty that he would never see these items again. Knowing how indispensable mothers are, I started to worry about any and every possible mishap that might occur at camp. Would the person in charge care that Brian had never been separated from me before. Would the counselors understand he had an aversion to milk, would they remind him to wear his old shoes when they went canoeing. But then, the buses pulled out. It was uncommonly quiet around the house that afternoon. To ease my conscience I began writing my first letter to camp. I attempted to think of fascinating things that had occurred in the last two hours. On the other hand, I didn’t want Brian to think he was missing anything too exciting, so the letter was exceptionally boring. Still I was certain, he would be thrilled to get mail. A couple of days later I received a letter addressed in a familiar script. It was mine, I had pre-addressed the envelopes. “Dear Mom, I am not coming back here next year. I am having a terrible time. I miss you.” Oh, such guilt. I blamed myself for sending him to an awful place. I tried to convince myself it was good for him to increase his independence, make new friends, develop more skills, etc, etc. But these lofty excuses couldn’t ease my anxiety. So I got busy writing more letters to camp. I wrote letters and post cards every day, sometimes twice a day. I drove to the post office to time the mailing so he would receive mail every day. The mailman delivered another familiar looking letter. “Dear Mom, Camp is getting better. I got two dollars from Aunt Sharon and Uncle Tom, and I found a penknife, but can’t get the blade out. The food is sometimes good and sometimes bad. We went on a hike and found out every pine tree has a smell. I miss you a lot.” Finally the longest week of my life came to a close. I anxiously met Brian’s bus as it pulled into the Y. One of the first questions I asked was if he had received my letters. Expecting a rush of happiness and gratitude for my extraordinary efforts, I was astounded by his reply. “I got a letter every day,” he began with a pained expression. “You made me feel like a fool.”
Chiricahua National Park BY LEON TRY ME BIKE SHOP What a great park little used east of Wilcox AZ about 30 miles. Southern AZ has lots to offer flat roads mountain views every where plus wide open spaces. Sandys restaurant is a good spot to eat at Sunizona if ride some of the area. Chiricahua Park is a wilderness area so no trail riding. The main road is good biking though. Many well marked hiking trails take you into the heart of many interesting rock formations. At 6200 feet above sea level it is very green with lots of pine trees. Lots cooler than Phoenix 40 degrees in July when I was there.
So much for the guilt.

APS OFFERING GRANTS TO ARIZONA TEACHERS THROUGH SUPPLY MY CLASS PROGRAM
Sky-Skraper-Rack-Card.pdf 1 3/29/2022 10:42:48 AM
C
Sky Skraper, an indie rock band from Phoenix, AZ, was formed in 2018 when band members, Brian (guitar), Colton (bass), Sam (keys), Joey (drums), and Lane (vocals) discovered their common passion for music at the day program they all attend. Their passion for music is matched by their desire to challenge the misconceptions that exist about people with disabilities, and their music reflects that.
Arizona Public Service Co. (APS) is helping local teachers get ready for the upcoming academic year with grants for classroom resources. Marking its fifth year, the APS Supply My Class program will award 500 K-12 Title 1 public or charter school teachers with $500 grants. “As students return to school, teachers are gearing up for the year and in many cases spending their own money to ensure their class is stocked with all of the essentials,” said Tina Marie Tentori, Director of Community Affairs for APS. “In less than a minute, educators can apply for an APS Supply My Class grant that can help ease out-of-pocket expenses and allow them to focus on what’s most important—preparing Arizona’s future leaders.” Over the APS Supply My Class program’s first four years, 3,000 teachers have received grants totaling $1.5 million. These grants have helped teachers purchase basic school supplies, refresh their classrooms, buy new chairs and more. Teachers in APS’s service territory can apply for a chance to be selected as a grant recipient through Sept. 15 at SupplyMyClass.com. APS will randomly select 100 teachers per week starting Aug. 19 through Sept. 16. Continuing in the same format as last year, the program’s first 100 grants will be directed to educators who have been teaching three years or less. Tentori added, “We value all our teachers, but designating 100 grants specifically for newer teachers ensures those who entered the classroom more recently get the extra support they need to build their classroom’s foundation and make a difference in the lives of Arizona’s students.” 2022 Supply My Class Participation Eligibility Full-time teachers at Title I K-12 public and charter schools in APS service territory. Completed online application form. Winners from previous years are eligible to enter and win again in 2022.

Weekend Warrior? That’s OK
BY NICHOLAS WAR NER , D C
As the name suggests, weekend warriors tend to concentrate their physical activity on the weekend, rather than throughout the week. One might think that’s not as health-promoting as activity performed on weekdays and weekends, but research suggests that’s not the case. Even weekend warriors can benefit – and to the same extent as throughout-the-week exercisers; particularly when examining perhaps the most important health variable of all: risk of death. Researchers compared several different patterns of physical activity among more than 350,000 U.S. adults (weekend warrior vs. regularly active leisure-time physical activity) to determine whether one increased the risk of mortality: by any cause, cardiovascular disease or cancer. Members of each group were also subclassified according to frequency, duration and intensity of physical activities performed. Findings, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, revealed: “Adults who perform 150 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity (or 75 minutes of vigorous activity) per week may experience similar health benefits whether the sessions are spread throughout the week or concentrated in a weekend.” Specifically, adults participating in either activity pattern had an equal, reduced risk of mortality (all-cause or cause-specific) compared to inactive adults. In other words, as long as you exercise, it doesn’t matter if you do it throughout the week or only on the weekends. The important thing is that you do something ... besides sitting around. Ask your doctor for help designing a physical activity program you can stick with and that takes any health limitations into consideration. It›s time to get moving! DR. NICHOLAS WARNER, C.M.T., D.C. The Moon Valley Tattler | August 2022 21
BY DR . PAUL S TANTON SUPER INTENDENT, WESD
Hello WESD Partners and Community Members,
If you are new, my name is Dr. Paul Stanton, the proud superintendent of the Washington Elementary School District (WESD). Another school year is beginning and the WESD has some changes in store for you. We have been reviewing our communication and we are looking to improve this year. Last year, we provided a lot of information and so this year, we will be working to simplify our message and add graphics, pictures, and other engaging methods to connect with you. There will be times when we want to have a dialogue with you rather than just provide one-sided information. We are so very grateful that you have chosen to send your children to our schools. At the end of this communication, you will find multiple ways to connect with us. I hope you find one or two ways that work for you. As a reminder, school begins Monday, August 8th. Goals for the 2022-2023 School Year This school year, our Board and administration have worked on focusing on three goals. Each school has its own goals too, but these are three overarching goals that we will be achieving. First, the District will be committed to creating a safe, secure and healthy learning and work environment where the diverse cultures of WESD students, families and staff are respected and celebrated, as measured by a growth in positive responses in the WESD student, family and staff surveys. Second, WESD will be dedicated to improving students’ achievements. The District will provide educators with more opportunities to collaborate and learn together and develop their ability to engage students in their learning, as measured by growth on district and state assessments. Finally, the District will work to enhance family and community engagement. WESD will ensure each campus has a documented plan to increase family
engagement and participation by actively working to identify strategies to welcome all families and increase representation of underrepresented communities. Throughout the year, I will provide you with progress updates toward these goals. If you wish to learn about your school’s goals, please reach out to the campus administrator. WESD is Hiring! Come join our WESD Family! Our District currently has a wide variety of employment opportunities available from teaching positions to support staff roles such as bus drivers, office technicians, classroom assistants, food service helpers, crossing guards and much more. Where there are lemons, we’ll help you make lemonade. Sour about inflation and rising prices? We can’t help you with prices at the gas pump and grocery store, but we can help you lower the cost of your retirement. INTRODUCING OUR NEW RATE LOCK PLAN! It lowers your monthly fee and freezes the costs for your residence, utilities, housekeeping and maintenance. Ahh, sweet relief!
