M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C BY D EB B I E ER BS TO E SSER We had our back wall painted by my nephew-in-law, Jason Begay. I’ve admired other wall murals in the past, but never knew anyone who did them. He was able to squeeze us in, as he was part of the Phoenix Mural Project along the Grand Canal in March from 7th St. to 15th Ave. Last year he volunteered at a project in Tempe where various artists painted over some hateful graffiti at a couple’s home.

Jason is a native Arizonian and has been a tattoo artist for 16 years. He met our niece Breanne through a running group they were both a part of. She attended our three neighborhood schools. They got married two years ago and have a baby girl. When the pandemic hit Jason couldn’t work and neither could Bre. They had to get creative finding ways to make a living and support their little family. Bre painted bottles and glasses when she couldn’t give massages and Jason started painting walls. He did a mural on the wall in their yard and when friends saw it, they wanted it done and their friends in turn wanted it also. It grew from word of mouth, referrals and posting to social media. Now he’s busier than he thought he’d ever be, as the idea to do these murals was something he and Bre talked about, but not so much as a way to earn a living. It was an idea that grew.

Our plans for the back wall grew as well; from one segment to four. Now

that they’re done and we enjoy this amazing view every day, all day, we’re so glad we had them painted. Our next project will be to get lights set up so we can view the images in the evenings too. Treasure House serves as a beacon of light not just for its residents, but for the entire local disability community. “Our nonprofit is constantly looking for ways to serve Arizona’s differently abled, which is why we were pleased at the opportunity to bring our resident certified community service dog, Murphy, to interact with members of the IDD community at Moon Valley High School”, said Lauri Tanner, Treasure House CEO. Murphy and Lauri headed to Moon Valley High School to get to know seven students and various staff. The MVHS Multiple Disabilities Student Program serves a profoundly impacted teenage population. Service dogs are ideal working tools for their disabled partners to gain independence. They decrease stress and anxiety, increase mobility and simply put – bring sheer joy and delight.

“During the pandemic, the students have continued in-person classes five days a week but any non-classroom activities have been non-existent,” said Sandy Margetis, Treasure House Board Member and nurse at Moon Valley High School. “Having Murphy attend an outdoor event with the students seemed to be a perfect way to gradually ease into extracurricular experiences again. His intuition in how to gently approach our students while engaging tactile, visual and auditory senses seemed to compliment the teachers’ lesson plans.”

The students were thrilled to see Murphy. “I could hear the squeals of happiness from 200 yards out once the students spotted our beautiful yellow Labrador,” said Lauri. “Murphy loves playing to a crowd by showing off his tricks.

He receives lots of treats and applause.”

Murphy has worked with Lauri since 2016, when he was just over two years old. He is highly trained in health care for children and young adults to manage anxiety and depression in people with disabilities by providing emotional support

and distraction, and he encourages physical activity. He has worked with hundreds of individuals – Murphy started his ‘career’ working with Lauri at a Children’s Hospital in the Midwest.

“In a time when we’ve all had to deal with social distancing, these students may have suffered the most from lack of closeness,” said Sandy. “Furry hugs, paw pats and doggie acrobatics certainly helped to fill the void. We hope this is the first of many Treasure House and Murphy visits!”

Its spring, and I am SO HAPPY!!!! After a long dark winter season, COVID, and the craziness of all that is around us, I see a huge rainbow and bright lights shining. The mountain is full of hikers, the front yards filled with the most beautiful and fragrant flowers, the smell of orange blossoms and people out and about engaging and socializing again. The world around us has certainly changed, but the hope of normal life is really starting to present itself and the bustling business in Moon Valley is starting to show.

Living in Moon Valley is such a joy and privilege I must say, look at the homes and how beautiful they are looking, during the pandemic so many of you took the opportunity to brighten up the yards, paint, redecorate, update, completely re-do and create such a pride in our community. Another great factor is of course the rise in home prices and shrinking inventory available for homes in the area. Everyone wants to LIVE in MOON VALLEY again, or maybe I should say always!!

Great schools, great teachers, coaches, churches….. people in general, lets keep it strong and growing for the next generations.

As I look around, we have a few more “empty” spots than I would like to see in our storefronts, I want us all to think about where we shop, eat and play…. Let’s engage again with all the businesses that have worked so hard in staying here in our little “hood”. Stay local.. support local! Let’s grow and keep Moon Valley one of the best communities in Phoenix.

Those of us with pets consider them members of our family. And like the rest of the family, we want to make sure they are taken care of when we can no longer do the job! This month let’s talk about pets and trusts.

How the Wealthy Plan for Their Pets First, the fun (or at least the roll-youreyes) part: How the wealthy sometimes provide for their pets.

Leona Helmsley is one of the most famous examples, having left her entire $12 Million fortune to Trouble, her dog. The family sued, and the judge whittled Trouble’s share down to $2 Million. The widow of the Star Trek creator left $4 Million for their dogs, and $1 Million for the employee to care for them. Even Oprah Winfrey has established a pet trust for her beloved dogs, setting aside $30 Million for their care, according to Australia’s Woman’s Day magazine. One of my favorites is Miami heiress Gail Posner who left $3 Million for her three dogs – and just $2 million to her son.

Although the rich and eccentric get attention for the lavish gifts they bestow on their spoiled pets, you might find that your own neighbors may want or need a pet trust. Why? Because some pets can live a long, long time, longer even than we live. Tortoises are one example. A friend of mine has a Tortuga – a tortoise – named Pepe who could live for 100 years. A cockatoo can live as long as 60 years. When your pets could easily outlive you, you should plan for them to be adopted by the right people and provide the money to assure they get the care you want.

Providing Funds for Your Friend or Family Who Adopt Your Pet Money can be an important piece of providing for your pets, since some pets are valuable and/or expensive to keep. Caring for horses, for example, requires a much greater expenditure of time and money than the care for a dog or cat. Setting up a trust provides the money so that it is not a burden on the person who receives your pets at your death and assures your pets will live out their natural life the way you would want.

Put Your Own Spin on the Instructions for Your Pet Trust Pet trusts allow a pet owner to provide not just money for the animal, but detailed requirements for their care. The owner designates the amount of money or other assets to be held in the pet trust, names the person who will handle that money and appoints a person to care for the pet. There can be one person or two different people in charge – one for the money management and one for the pet care.

The pet trust can be created as a separate trust or created within your own revocable living trust. For those who want a simpler plan, we can also just provide that a designated caregiver is to take the pets, and when they do a cash gift is given as well.

Whatever you decide to do to provide for you pets, it is important to put it in writing if you want it to be binding. Having a plan in place for your assets, for your pets and for your own care if you are incapacitated will give you immense peace of mind.

Rookie Mom: To Get Pregnant or Not to Get Pregnant as Bipolar II? B Y B R I G H I D CO N S TA B L E Of the articles that I publish, the ones that get the most “reads” or “attention” is when I discuss my mental illness while navigating motherhood.

I was published by Scary Mommy back in 2018 when coming out about my postpartum psychosis along with Bustle when candidly describing my postpartum depression while being diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder after giving birth to my daughter.

I never, in a million years, imagined that I would have consistent mental breakdowns due to my diagnosis.

The backwards thing is that I am definitely not a victim about having Bipolar II. Yes, I care more than the average Joe which makes me hypersensitive that can then affect my moods. However, I take my medication and talk to a therapist, so I do my best managing what I can.

Then, about 5 months ago, my menstrual cycle was off. I worked with my OB/GYN to take progesterone to get back to “normal.” But the reality came hard and clear that perimenopause would probably arrive earlier than expected in my life.

I’m 36. My husband and I put the possibility of Kid #2 in the backseat once quarantine came around. Now that there’s a vaccine (and I have the first dose), that conversation has taken a comfortable place in the front.

My OB recommended a prenatal specialist this round during my pregnancy, just because I want to be as prepared as possible with the prospect of having postpartum psychosis (PPP) followed by postpartum depression (PPD). When I met with the recommended perinatal specialist, she told me that psychiatrists who specialize in PPP are basically nil in Phoenix. She said she would do research and send me a recommendation of someone in the Valley. When she did, that certain doctor wasn’t covered under my insurance

and the initial cost was $475.

This obviously couldn’t happen no matter how much I wanted it. But what made me nervous was returning to my initial psychiatrist and asking her about transitioning to Bipolar II medication during pregnancy. Currently on Lithium to keep me stable, I knew my doctor didn’t want me to have another child. I knew the worried comments were coming.

And then she said it, again: “Your baby could have Bipolar II.” This was something we discussed with my daughter, Brynn, as a baby. My father was bipolar, my brother was bipolar, my sister is bipolar, I am bipolar. It is not a dirty word. But it is a stigma.

It is a journey that can be heavier than average people, but I live a joy-filled and purposeful life that is family driven.

Maybe my doctor’s intention wasn’t guilt, but nonetheless, I was/am filled with it. Am I selfish for wanting another child? For wanting a partner for Brynn to grow up with during childhood and adulthood? For a child to struggle with a tendency toward depression or hypomania?

The answer is that it’s my decision. It is a choice that my husband and I are carefully trying to make.

I just wish there was more research and education for mothers with Bipolar II, or other mental illnesses, to have the right and affordable support for an easy transition from pregnancy into motherhood -- especially in Arizona.

But so it is.

Phoenix - A great place to buy

In leafing through my March 2021 copy of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, I came across a couple of interesting blurbs, which directly pertain to us Phoenicians.

In an article entitled “Housing Snapshot – Home Prices in !00 Cities,” they compared today’s median home price, against the percentage change in the last year, since the top of the market in 2006, and since the bottom of the market in 2012.

The median price of a home in Phoenix today is $308,900 according to Clear Capital on whose data the piece is based. They track “price changes based on a sample of existing homes and condos . . . that have been sold multiple times over various periods of times.” Thus “home values shown may differ from other measures . . . based only on sales during a particular time period.”

During the last year home prices are up by 11.9% in the Phoenix area. They are up by 4.1% since the market peak in 2006, and by 98.6% since the bottom in 2012.

This is startling to me. I’m in the mortgage business, not in the real estate business. I had no idea that prices had slipped so far and had come back so quickly. The almost 12% appreciation in the past year does not surprise me. Phoenix is a very viable area.

But the big decline from 2006 to 2012 is overwhelming. This precipitated a buying frenzy which continues today.

What is the conclusion here? My take is that a home purchase is the best

single investment that one can make. This is where you start building wealth.

The piece also stated that in “cities with more than 1 million people . . . it’s more affordable to buy a home than rent” in Phoenix. Even if you’re your market timing isn’t the best, you are still better off buying.

Another article “Qualify for the Best Mortgage Rate” relates to my writeup last month. They recommend these things: Make sure your credit is up to snuff – over a 700 FICO is the gold standard according to Guy Cecala of “Inside Mortgage Finance.” They recommend www.nfcc.org as a site where one can work up a customized plan to increase your score, reasonably.

Up your down payment – lenders feel more secure with 20% down. P&I payments are lower and mortgage insurance is not tacked on Comparison-shop your rate. They state that nonbanks tend to have better rates than the big banks. They cite the mortgage company that “blasts off” and the company with the ad of a cartoon character sitting around in his pajamas shopping for rate, as examples. Our company compares 20 to 30 lenders on every deal, and we recommend the best for the borrower’s particular situation.

The take away here is that one is better off in Phoenix owning a home, rather than renting, and you will make a great deal if your credit score is great. Seems pretty obvious doesn’t it?

Shaw Butte: A History

As I regular hiker, I had been curious about the origins of the Shaw Butte Trail and started looking into it. My research led me to the Arizona Room at the Burton Barr Library, where I saw aerial photos of the trail dating back to the mid-1950’s. But I got first-hand information from talking to the grandson of the founder of American Tower Corporation.

The grandson claimed the original trail was cut by the Army Corps of Engineers in the early 1940’s to support flight operations for Luke, Thunderbird and Williams Air Force bases. During the war years, the valley skies were flooded with a variety of military aircraft – the valley was ideal for flight training because of the high percentage of clear flying days. The Air Force placed spotters and radio operators on many valley peaks to help guide and support the training aircraft. The Shaw Butte trail enabled them to reach the top of that peak.

After the war the trail remained mostly unused, but in the 1950’s Bell Telephone pioneered the use of microwave transmission for their long-distance service, and Shaw Butte was the perfect spot for a relay tower. Bell Telephone paved and maintained the trail until the antitrust breakup and the onset of

cellular communications.

Today the trail is part of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve and serves as an easement for APS to supply power to the various cell and communication towers at the top. The gate at the trailhead on Central Ave is currently controlled by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). DHS considers the cell towers at the top to be critical infrastructure.

The next time you climb the trail, give some thought to the history under your feet.

Philanthropy Continues during the COVID Crisis B Y B E C K Y H A R L O W

As the pandemic surged through the country in 2020 many organizations had to evaluate how to continue their mission safely.

Through generous funding and innovative events one Phoenix non-profit awarded $52,500 in grants to help other organizations meet the needs of women and children across the state. Grants are awarded annually through a grant application and review process. The Arizona Women’s Partnership, Inc., (AZWP) is an all-volunteer philanthropic non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the status of Arizona women and empowering women’s grass roots organizations through mini grants and publicity.

“Our numerous grant recipient non-profits, which operate on shoestring budgets, continue to do phenomenal work in assisting under-served women, children, and families in Arizona,” said Paula Cullison, AZWP President and Founder.

Many of the organizations are multi-year grant recipients. Organizations with the longest AZWP partnership found ways to continue to serve the community as well as address new needs that surfaced during the pandemic.

Alice’s Place provides counseling and shelter for victims of domestic violence in Winslow, AZ. The 2020 grant helped cover the cost of a 24-hour crisis phone line that is vital for clients, law enforcement and hospital staff.

Arizona Association for Foster and Adoptive Parents provides services and programs for foster and adoptive parents, including donated clothing and supplies, a training series to address situations unique to foster and adoptive parents, and toy drives.

Desert Sounds Performing Arts offers musical instruments and instruction for low income youth in Mesa, AZ. The grant funding covered the repair of 20 instruments and the purchase of ancillary supplies.

H.A.V.E.N. Family Resource Center provides domestic violence and family counseling services in Lake Havasu, AZ. During the pandemic they were able to continue crisis counseling for victims of crime and traumatized women and children totaling almost 400 hours of service.

Unlimited Potential offers English as a Second Language (ESL) and General Educational Development (GED) programs for Hispanic women and their families in the south Phoenix area.

Welcome to America is a resource for refugee families in the Phoenix metro area that provides services and household furnishings. Short term and existing services were funded by the grant including hygiene and cleaning kits as well as assistance with finding employment and transportation.

NavajoYES offers leadership programs for youth on the Navajo Nation.

During the pandemic they were able to focus on local trail restoration (among other needs) and encouraged families to visit them.

The following organizations also received an AZWP grant. The funds aided in helping so many people and projects across the state.

About Care for the Elderly - building a community support system for the frail elderly, physically challenged and chronically ill homebound residents in the East Valley area.

Constructing Circles of Peace - mental health program that provides domestic violence counseling services for women in Nogales, AZ. Grand Canyon Music Festival - initiated the Native American Composers Apprentice Project (NACAP) in 2001 to train talented Native American students in the art of composition.

Rim Country Literacy - literacy and ESL classes in Payson, AZ as well as books for children and adults in the area.

Angel Heart Pajama Project - provides PJs and books to abused and neglected children and youth in foster care in Tucson, AZ. Billy’s Place - grief counseling services for children of deceased parents in the Phoenix metro area.

Dignity House - shelter for sexually trafficked / domestically abused women in the Phoenix metro area.

Hope’s Crossing - meets the needs women released from incarceration in the Phoenix metro area by helping them to transition into a life of work, family and community.

Laptops4Learning - provides laptop computers to underserved high school and college students in the Phoenix metro area.

Neighbors Who Care - transportation to medical appointments, evening meal delivery, and other services for the underserved elderly in the East Valley area.

Pan de Vida - intergenerational social services (ex. vegetable garden) in Queen Creek and East Valley areas.

Somali American United Council of AZ - serves a variety of different refugee groups in Phoenix metro area by providing supplies to make clothing as well as masks.

West Yavapai Guidance Clinic Foundation - provides mental health services, clothing and other supplies to women and children in Prescott, AZ. Will2Walk – services to improve the quality of life for youth with spinal cord injuries in the East Valley area.

Next year AZWP will celebrate 20 years of supporting and promoting programs that focus on Arizona women and children.

“As I reflect on the 20 years, since I created the Arizona Women’s Partnership, I am truly amazed at the number who have stepped forth to help, whether to donate funds, in-kind services, or to volunteer. For this, I am extremely grateful,” said Cullison. “Knowing that the needs of vulnerable populations remain constant, the Arizona Women’s Partnership will continue to do as much as we can for as long as we can.”

AZ Humane Society Adoption Spotlight: Simone With big, bright yellow eyes and a silky mane, anyone who comes into contact with Simone (657700) cannot help but be mesmerized by her charming good looks. The loving four-yearold domestic longhair kitty is quite the showstopper and even has some natural auburn highlights throughout her raven fur.

Simone was rescued by an Arizona Humane Society Cruelty Investigator in February of this year after she was found abandoned and is a great reminder that AHS is available to give tips and resources to pet owners in need. Once in AHS’ care, it was found that she had a little kitty cold and was in need of some time to heal with a loving Foster Hero. Now that she is back to feeling like her regular self, Simone would love to go to a cat savvy home who understands all of her adorable quirks and will give her shiny coat a nice brushing to help keep it in tip-top shape.

Bus Transit Enforcement: The special Police unit is BAck

BY FROST Y K ROENING Lt. Mark Schweikert of the Bus Transit Enforcement Team at the Phoenix Police Department spoke at the March 10 Black Mountain Community Alliance zoom meeting. He reported that during the “year of Covid” and election demonstrations, the team was redeployed to take care of other police duties. But, now they are back policing buses and light rail and the bus stops and light rail stations.

Some buses now will have protective barriers put in place to protect drivers from riders’ abusive actions, including having items thrown at them. People need to take transit to work, so it is important to provide safe and clean transit experiences.

Neighborhood group representatives pointed out problems around QT gas and food centers along the I-17 corridor. Food apparently is less expensive there for people and the QT company provides bathrooms for the public. QT’s management has been cooperating with police and now will commission a new security unit of employees to help patrol their stores. And, the company also has dismantled its outside electrical outlets so people cannot charge their phones at the store. QT wants to be a good neighbor in communities. Other neighbors of Circle K stores are hoping that company will join this effort. Some convenience stores have pony walls that provide cover for homeless people’s encampments. Solutions for this issue will be addressed.

Citizens are urged to call Lt. Brian Rimza at (602)495-5032 if we see overloaded trash cans or dirty or damaged bus stops or light rail stations. The City has cleanup crews who will go out and service these areas.

Some bus stops are having chairs placed at safe distances from each other rather than using benches. This is more expensive than benches, but keeps people from sleeping on benches.

If areas in back of and near bus stops are filled with trash, the property owner is called to clean up. Police are constantly challenged with keeping public transit functions clean and safe. The City upgrades lighting to LED brightness where appropriate. It is good to know that Phoenix has identified these needs and has assigned officers and cleaners to keep buses, bus stops, and light rail cars and stations safe and clean.

We applaud the men and women who are our first responders. For homeless people, bus and light rail shelters may feel like safety and home. But, the police have information about how to access other city services that will not only provide true shelter but also food and jobs and health care. The City of Phoenix is trying really hard to address the needs of the people.

Ah, but there are trade offs. Perhaps you noticed the house numbers put on our curbs a few years ago by an industrious veteran. For a small nominal fee our house numbers were put on the curb. However, if you were not home to authorize that you may have missed his service. Can you see them at a quick glance at night? I have noticed that unless your landscaping has generous lighting, chances are you may not see the curb numbers.

How about the numbers on your house. Are they easy to see at a glance?

How about we join together and illuminate all our house numbers for a quick glance. Uniformity is helpful, perhaps we all can illuminate our mail boxes.

If it is a brick and mortar one we have lots of options. If it is just a standard mailbox, we need to get creative. Size of the numbers is important and light is very important.

Here’s where we have some options. An electric spot light on a timer or a dust to dawn unit with light sensors. Both kinds are available at our local Home Depot and Lowe’s. But, first I would recommend going on the internet and seeing other options before you decide. While you are shopping consider replacing your mailbox with a locked one. They are about a hundred dollars.

Well worth the investment. This deters mail theft and perhaps will discourage the nefarious thieves from our area. Its like locking your cars and not leaving your garage doors open which discourages theft.

Flowers in the Garden of Life Continue to Bloom

NCL’s Back to School Drive B Y J U L I A G U L I N S O N , C L A S S O F 2 021 As I look back on my six years in NCL I remeber one in particular. On a hot summer day both mothers and daughters from the National Charity League,Inc. (NCL) Moon Valley Chapter, gathered to help children in need of back to school necessities such as backpacks, clothes, shoes, supplies, and books. This is by far my favorite philanthropy.

The Back to School Clothing drive holds a special place in my heart because of the happiness it brings the children we help. Pre-covid when I participated in this philanthropy, each member of NCL would be assigned a child to shop with.

Sometimes one child, sometimes two or three at a time. I would walk around with them carrying their bags, which we would fill with supplies and clothing in preparation of their first day of school. Our first stop was shoes where the children would get sized, and then receive brand new shoes and socks for school.

Next we would go to the clothing section where they would receive shirts, skirts, shorts, pants, belts, and undergarments. We’d then go to shop for regular clothes where each child is able to pick out fun handmade items like scarves, hats, bags, shirts, etc. The next stops include a book station, and a backpack and school supply area. And then finally, we would finish the day by having lunch together.

Jenna Gulinson (Class of 2022) said “The Back to school drive is so important because it allows me to help children who aren’t able to afford what they need for school. It allows me to be able to make their day and put a smile on their face by helping them get prepared for school and spending time with them. It’s amazing the service, we as a chapter are able to offer to these families.”

Not only does service at this philanthropy help bond my sister, mom and I, but it’s such a great experience for us and these children. I’ll never forget the special moments I’ve shared with the kids I’ve helped and the positive energy from the whole Back to School Drive Organization. I’m so happy that these kids will be able to return to school with brand new clothes, school supplies, and a thankful heart.

National Charity League (NCL) is a Philanthropic organization that contains more than 200 chapters around the country focusing on strengthening and forming mother-daughter relationships while doing community service, cultural experience, and leadership development. She earned a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri at Columbia and has extensive experience in marketing, public relations and copywriting and resides in St Louis, MO. “For the Arizona Women’s Partnership, based in Moon Valley, volunteers are a critical part of our growth. With their help, we continue to broaden our donor base. We are grateful to Becky for her willingness to write a feature article to inform others about AZWP and our grant recipients,” Cullison added. The article will be posted on social media sites later this month.

“As an experienced writer in the job market, I find that volunteering keeps my skills fresh and at the same time I’m contributing to wonderful organizations like AZWP,” stated Harlow.

WESD Updates for April

Dear WESD Partners and Community Members, As we begin the fourth quarter with students on our campuses once again, I would like to thank our community for your support in this process and over the past year. Together, we have overcome many challenges.

Though we may face challenges in the fourth quarter and beyond, I have faith that we will continue to overcome them as one WESD Family.

WESD Returns to In Person Learning WESD students returned to campuses on Monday, March 22nd. This was a tremendous undertaking and I would like to thank all of our administrators, teachers and staff for their hard work and commitment to making this transition as smooth as possible. The option to remain online for the remainder of the school year was made available to families who preferred to keep their students at home.

The WESD is committed to the health and safety of our students and staff. We are implementing multiple mitigation strategies on our campuses including daily health screenings, the universal and correct use of masks, physical distancing, handwashing and respiratory etiquette, enhancing cleaning, maintaining healthy facilities and contact tracing in combination with isolation and quarantining.

In addition to these mitigation strategies, the WESD purchased highefficiency particulate air (HEPA) “scrubbers” that pull air in, remove many contaminants, and discharge cleaner air back into the room. The HEPA filters in these machines are rated to remove 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns and scrub the air 12.5 times per hour.

WESD Surpasses Two Million Meals Served The WESD Nutrition Services department offers breakfast, lunches and snacks to our families and community free of charge through our Grab and Go meal program. Earlier this year, we expanded this program to include free,

dinner meal kits that contain a recipe and all of the ingredients necessary for preparation. I am proud to share that through these programs, WESD Nutrition Services has served over two million meals. They are truly incredible!

Now Enrolling Families for the 2021 -2022 School Year WESD is enrolling kindergarteners for the 2021-2022 school year. We offer very low teacher to student ratios so your child receives personalized attention.

We offer a free, full day program with a research-based curriculum that addresses reading, writing, math, science, social studies, physical education and art with plenty of time for exploration and play. Dear Gen-E, I’m spring cleaning our garage since Earth Day is coming up and found a huge old computer, a VCR, a laptop, two phones and some other old funky, tech devices. What should I do with them?

Dear E-Clutter, That’s quite a collection of “old” electronics! It’s true technology moves so fast today devices just a decade old can seem ancient. Lots of people hang on to old tech stuff because it doesn’t fit in the trash bin. That’s not the place to put it anyway! Some folks are waiting for the museums to take their tech treasures.

Nope! If it’s out of date tech... it’s no longer treasured!

Actually, electronics don’t have to go into the landfill at all either. They can be recycled by taking them apart and repurposing their parts. Or, even better, refurbished into good-as-new devices! Those are then donated to schools, libraries, community centers and other people in need of tech.

Right here in Arizona, we have an incredible nonprofit organization called Arizona Students Recycling Used Technology (AZStRUT). They take used technology, teach students how to fix the computers (which is an awesome work experience for future techs!) and then donate the equipment to educational and community organizations. It’s a win for everyone involved, including Mother Earth! You can learn all about them at AZStRUT.org.

GenTech partnered with AZStRUT for KidsTech equipment too to teach computer building in Valley schools. Students literally use refurbished computers from defense, aerospace and technology companies, and law firms. When kids get one of these computers, it’s possible an aerospace engineer designed a super cool missile on it so KidsTech instructors always ask them what they’ ll create with it. No pressure or anything! Ha! Other places that take in used tech and recycle it are Data Doctors, Goodwill and Best Buy.

Ok, now I’m sure you’re excited to load up your car with all those used electronics! Right? But before you head down to the recycling center, you’ll need to do a few things first.

Don’t forget to transfer your software subscriptions, like Microsoft Office or Adobe, to your new device.

Next, make sure your old devices are totally clean. Put down the feather duster -- I mean that all the information on your old computer or phone has been absolutely, totally, positively, for sure, deleted. You don’t want personal information like passwords, bank info or your grandma’s best apple pie recipe falling into the wrong hands! This is one time when simply clicking “Delete” doesn’t cut it. Call a tech company and tell them you want to completely wipe your hard drive or get help to take it out to secure your data.

Disinfecting inside and out is a good practice for all of us these days and that applies to tech, too!

Careful menu planning, shopping and food preparation can result in a significant reduction in your monthly food budget. The USDA estimates Americans waste 219 pounds of food each year per person. You can cut down on waste and spend less money at the grocery store by following a few simple guidelines: Before you head to the grocery store: Take a quick inventory of the food on hand. Browse through your pantry, refrigerator and freezer to see what food products are available, so you don’t buy duplicates of food you already have.

Check the “best by” dates on perishable items such as dairy and meat and discard any that are past their expiration date.

Check the local paper or the Internet for your grocery store’s weekly specials.

This will help identify foods that are on sale and in season.

Write out a menu for each day of the week. Choose meals that incorporate foods you already have on hand.

Protein-rich foods are often the most expensive items on the menu. Add a couple of meatless dinners to your weekly menu to cut down on protein costs and help the environment. Beans, cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese and eggs are high quality sources of protein with little or no waste. Having breakfast for dinner once a week or vegetarian lasagna are good non-meat meal options.

If you’re cooking for children, tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches are quick meat-free meals that kids tend to enjoy.

Include a quick-prep meal for nights when you have to work late. They are a good alternative to fast food meals both in terms of nutrition and cost.

Make a detailed list of grocery items, based on the meals you plan to make. If you go to the store without a list, you’re more likely to buy impulsively and spend more money on unnecessary items.

When you’re shopping at the grocery store: A good rule of thumb is to start shopping the outside aisles first where the fresh vegetables, fruit, meat and dairy are located.

Avoid the center aisles where the more expensive processed foods are located.

Buy generic or store brand foods whenever possible. In most cases, they are the same quality as advertised brand name items, but at a lower cost. Canned foods are typically less expensive than items in a jar.

If fresh produce items are expensive or out of season, consider buying frozen fruits and vegetables. They provide excellent value and quality during off peak times.

Sign up for the store’s rewards club and show your club card every time you shop. Digital coupons and discounts at the register can provide major savings if they are for items you would typically purchase.

When you arrive home, prepare and store your food properly: Divide large packs of meat into smaller portions and date and label them before storing them in your freezer.

Clean and chop vegetables such as carrots, celery, and green onions. They can be used during the week in stews, casseroles or as cooked hot vegetables. Having freshly prepped vegetables will make weekday meals a breeze.

Put healthy food items such as fruit and veggie sticks toward the front of the fridge, so you will be more likely to eat these nutritious foods first and reduce the risk of spoilage.

Save dinner leftovers for weekday lunches or freeze them for later use.

Meal planning not only lowers your food budget, but also cuts down on cooking and clean up time during the week. This will give you more time to relax and spend time with your family.

A guide to becoming an engaged Citizen

We have just completed the national and local runoff elections, and hopefully many of you have voted. You might think the task is done for another 2 years until the mid-term elections – but you would be mistaken. Voting is the minimum action required the citizens in a democratic republic like our own. There’s more needed of citizens to stay engaged with those who represent us in our government at the school board, local, state and national levels. I’ve put together this guide with references to ease the process.

It’s important to get a good source of news (though challenging these days on who to believe). I generally don’t rely totally on the national media. In cases where the “news” reports on a bill, a speech or a hearing – I tend to lookup events I’m interested in to watch a recorded version of it, the real truth, versus someone’s interpretation of that event. I also listen to podcasts of a few folks that I trust will share the truth. Staying current on the issues in front our government is just the first step to being a responsible citizen.

Next step is to know who are your representatives, then to contact them to share your opinion on issues and proposed solutions that matter to you. The good representatives count on input to guide their decisions.

I live in Moon Valley, so locally it’s City of Phoenix District 3 and State of Arizona Legislative District: 20 and Congressional District 6. If you live elsewhere, you can verify at https://azredistricting.org/districtlocator/.
