May 14: Raising Apraxia Awareness in Moon Valley B Y S U S A N M E R C E R H I N R I C H S , R E P O R T E R , T H E M O O N VA L L E Y TAT T L E R The little blonde-haired girl jumps onto a Moon Valley Park playground swing seat and pumps her legs vigorously, soaring over the surrounding soft sand.

Laughing after some minutes of that fun, she next climbs a ladder leading to a slide and shouts gloriously as she zooms to the pliable base surrounding it.

Arden Feist, aged 7, is absorbed in her afternoon’s activities with the wholehearted joy of any youngster.

But ask her to describe what she’s been doing over the past moments, and she’ll explain in words, some understandable, some not, about her activities.

Arden looks to her Mother, Trinity Feist, for some assistance. And Trinity, in turn, will be her daughter’s translator, of sorts, clarifying the words with which Arden struggles.

Arden is afflicted with Childhood Apraxia of Speech or CAS. Adults of any age can be subject to apraxia, as well.

And May 14 is the nationwide third annual Apraxia Awareness Day. An apraxia walk usually also takes place in November in the Valley of the Sun. The neurological condition is one in which a malfunction in a person’s brain makes expressing one’s self in words, so-called expressive language, limited to varying degrees. However, the receptive language -- the comprehension of spoken language a person with apraxia hears -- is normally unaffected.

According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, CAS “. . . is a motor speech disorder. Children with CAS have problems saying sounds, syllables and words. This is not because of muscle weakness or paralysis. The brain has problems planning to move the body parts (e.g. lips, jaw, tongue) needed for speech.

The child knows what he or she wants to say, but his/her brain has difficulty coor-

dinating the muscle movements necessary to say those words.”

An analogy is a computer that isn’t talking to a printer, even though its copying request was sent.

Fewer than 200,000 cases of apraxia are known to occur in the United States annually. At this time, no known cure for it exists, ASHA statistics state.

But don’t tell this Moon Valley youngster she’s different. On the contrary, Arden is so full of life and determination that many believe she’ll become the master of her condition.

“It’s a disconnect between the brain and the mouth,” Trinity says, adding it’s a condition whose awareness currently can be compared to that some two decades ago when public knowledge of autism was developing. She says she hopes more people will become aware of apraxia and that funding will be developed to further research it.

Trinity says she and her husband, Thomas Feist, noticed Arden didn’t coo or babble as a one-year-old. And the condition persisted.

When Arden was about 18 months old, Trinity contacted a state of Arizona early-childhood-intervention program to gain some insight into what was occurring with their younger daughter. Interacting with Arden, the staffers informed the Feists the child did understand what they were saying to her, but that she was unable to respond appropriately.

In addition, Trinity also contacted Arden’s pediatrician, who recommended the family contact a speech therapist.

At age three, the diagnosis came in: CAS. From that point, the Feists continued to learn more and more about the rare condition, which currently can be difficult to diagnose and in which few professionals are trained.

At home, Arden and her Mom, Dad and older sister, Iyla, 12, learned to communicate in sign language, pointing to objects and they all worked on sounds linked to word formations, Trinity says.

“She could sign everything great, but when it came to speaking, she could not say the words. And when she did get words, they were approximations,” such as leaving the beginnings or the ends of words off.

“We’re really lucky, because she’s an easy-going child,” says who did not become greatly frustrated about this lack of ability, Trinity says.

Close your eyes, the sounds of the waves are really relaxing, relaxation brings calmness to the mind. The waves come and take the worries with them. The sound of water is simplified, the sight of water is simplified, watching and listening give us a cognitive break because studies have shown that simply less information is coming in to our brains, they do not shut down, but it is a quieter “blue” space. The brain is often referred as being in a “mindful” state, which research also has found it is relieved from anxiety, pain, depression and improved mental clarity, focus and better sleep quality.

As the tide comes in and out, on my mindful walks, I collected what was once garbage and dangerous broken glass, now beautiful sea jewels, smooth, clouded, and precious, no different than our lives, the ocean helps smooth our souls and soften the edges.

New Businesses and Heat Related Issues

BY CO U N C I M A N B I L L G AT E S , CO U N C I L D I S T R I C T 3 I would like to welcome two new businesses to our district. Matrix Absence Management (Matrix) is moving its corporate headquarters from San Jose to Phoenix. Matrix allows employees to work with their employers in creating customized disability, family and medical leave, and workers’ compensation’s programs. The new building, located at 2421 W. Peoria Ave., Suite 200, also will be its new local Phoenix office. The building which houses over 400 employees is 65,000 square feet with several conference and training rooms.

Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) has established a corporate presence in District 3. The 11001 N. Black Canyon Highway location houses employees of the company’s U.S. Insurance and Retirement businesses, as well as enables the geographic expansion of the company’s customer service operations.

MassMutual occupies nearly 60,000 square feet of the office space in the 26-year-old building. The new location diversifies the company’s U.S. footprint, allowing for enhanced service to all U.S. policyowners and customers while further mitigating operational risks. MassMutual plans to employ approximately 400 people at the Phoenix location by the end of 2014. Please help me welcome Matrix and MassMutual to our district.

As the temperature in the Valley begins to rise it is a good time to remind residents of a couple important things. First, leaving kids and pets in hot cars can be very dangerous. Many parents and animal owners mistakenly think they can leave a child or pet in a vehicle while running a quick errand. Unfortunately a delay of just a few seconds can lead to a tragedy.

Heat is much more dangerous to children than to adults. When left in a hot vehicle, a young child’s core body temperature can increase three to five times faster than that of an adult, causing permanent injury or death.

Second, thanks to our great climate, hiking in Phoenix can be a year-round activity. As summer approaches, even the most experienced hikers need to be careful when hiking through the preserves. Often times, residents who have lived in Arizona for many years believe they are accustomed to the warm temperatures.

Don’t be fooled into believing that heat stroke and dehydration can’t happen to you.

This doesn’t mean we should all lock ourselves indoors from June-August. But do remember these tips when hiking in Phoenix during the summer months: -Make sure to bring your camelback full of water.

-Take periodic breaks if you are tired or out of breath.

-Carry your cell phone if possible and consider hiking with a friend.

-If hiking alone, tell someone where you will be and when you will return.

-Dogs get dehydrated too – bring lots of water for your pet, or leave Fido at home.

-Try to hike before noon – the late afternoon is the hottest time of day.

-Wear a hat and sunscreen.

-Don’t push yourself too hard. Remember you have to get back to where you started so don’t overdo it during the first half of the hike.

-If it’s over 110 degrees go swimming instead!

The City of Phoenix Fire Department conducts quite a few rescues in the summer months of folks who become overwhelmed by the heat. Don’t let this happen to you. Stay safe this summer and remember to increase the amount of water you drink.

About Chiro

JAMEY REICHOW Throughout my years of practice, I have been approached by patients inquiring about “what does it take to be a chiropractor”, “is chiropractic a doctorate program”,or “how long is chiropractic school”, and so on. Inspired by these questions, this month’s topic focuses on clearing up some of these familiar questions.

Firstly, chiropractic and medical education are similar. According to the Annals of Internal Medicine in 2002, “A recent study described U.S. chiropractic curricula as an average of 4820 classroom and clinical hours, with approximately 30% spent in the basic sciences and 70% in clinical sciences and internship. Medical school curricula average about 4670 hours with a similar breakdown. Compared to medical students, chiropractic students spend more hours in anatomy and physiology, but fewer in public health. Both programs have similar hours in biochemistry, microbiology, and pathology. Chiropractic curricula provide relatively little instruction in pharmacology, critical care, and surgery, but emphasize biomechanics, musculoskeletal function, and manipulations.

The Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC) represents all accredited colleges and programs which serve institutions and their students, the profession and its patients, and the public by advancing chiropractic education, research, and service. The ACC states the following regarding chiropractic: “Chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure and function and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. In addition, chiropractors recognize the value and responsibility of working in cooperation with other health care practitioners when in the best interest of the patient.”

Chiropractors are often thought of as back and neck pain doctors since spinal manipulation are more effective for these conditions than any other type of treatment. However, chiropractic is far more than that. It’s also about wellness and health. Many patients see chiropractors as their primary health doctor.

Moon Valley Magic Lies in Longevity

Gary and I are products of public schools from Elementary through college at San Diego State University. Our two older boys graduated from our neighborhood Thunderbird High School and our youngest is there now. All three of our boys played baseball (among other sports) and now Tbird is the #1 seed going into the playoffs that start on Tuesday, May 3rd. It’s been 6 years since Thunderbird High School has been in the playoffs. Back then Jon, a sophomore at ASU, was a freshman. Now Jaden a sophomore at Tbird gets to experience the sensation. The eight seniors on the team make this year special because they’ve all played together since Shaw Butte Little League. That’s not terribly unique, because every year the teams are comprised of boys who’ve come up from SBLL, but they don’t all make it through to their senior year as such a tight group. That is what’s so special and that uniqueness is what makes this team so great. It seems like a lifetime ago when I wrote about SBLL and the dad’s working their magic coaching our little boys.

When Arden reached school age, speech therapists working with the Washington Elementary School District also came to Lookout Mountain Elementary to assist the little girl during her academic day.

“She’s made a lot of good, steady progress,” Trinity says of the school and private speech-development therapies her daughter continues to receive. “Every year, we see more and more improvement with her.”

Sara Peterson is Arden’s first-grade teacher at Lookout Mountain Elementary School, where the academic year wraps up May 24.

“She’s with the rest of the class,” Peterson says of young Arden. “She has lots of friends; she’s right along with us.” adding the girl has the “right kind of attitude and I know she’ll go really far in her life.”

“Whenever we have a child who needs extra attention, (the WESD) is supportive,” the teacher says.

Compared to the academic year’s start last August, as this school calendar wraps up, Peterson says Arden’s has made great strides in reading -- “extremely far” and in writing, she “has come so far.”

Trinity says Arden has a good prognosis for continued speech/language improvement over the years and hopes she will outgrow the condition.

“I want to emphasize how proud we are of her,” Trinity says. “She works really hard -- so hard -- and she’s come a long way.”

In the interim, young Arden will continue to have fun at the playground, dress-up with her friends -- pink is a favorite color -- and play with her dollies, her prime Disney princesses being Tinkerbell and Tiana.

Neighborhood Speeding - Let’s be Safe!

BY BRET T ALDIERI, PRESIDENT OF MVNA Approximately 80 neighbors met at MVCC on April 21 to hear from experts and discuss options to reduce speeding and improve community safety. We were fortunate to have in attendance: Councilman Bill Gates office, City of Phoenix Police department, a City Transportation expert, and a Private consultant on traffic calming street designs.

All in attendance agreed that speed is an issue for Moon Valley and that we should take action before residents get hurt (or worse). It’s estimated that over half of our speeders are in fact Moon Valley residents speeding off to work or an appointment. Others are delivery services, school buses or folks cutting through our neighborhood (let’s hold all accountable!). See a speeder, record their license plate and call the Traffic Complaint Hotline: 602-534-SPEED (7733).

Historically, few options are available – namely police speed traps and speed bumps. Speed bumps are not allowed on main arterial or collector streets, only on lower volume residential streets. City of Phoenix transportation expert Kerry Wilcoxon explained “a new feature, called speed cushions are now available for collector streets.” Speed bumps and cushions both require a local neighborhood petition and funding for construction. Some residents expressed concern that these features affect both speeders and those of us driving within the limit; and that too many speed bumps may detract from our community.

Private consultants presented more passive options for traffic calming. Wider streets (i.e. Coral Gables) tend to encourage faster speeds, so features like extended cross walks, outcropped curbing, center islands and other features locally narrow streets and induce D ASE lower speed. IRS on the Hunt for Tax Fraudsters, Tax Cheats and Non-filers The U.S. Attorney General said the government will use all of its power to seek out tax scammers and tax cheats, making now a good time for any cheating taxpayers to come clean.

Scammers seeking fraudulent federal tax refunds based on stolen identities are a “rising threat” in the United States, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder warned taxpayers.

In an extraordinary public statement about his concerns, Holder described these scammers as an “increasingly urgent problem.”

Throughout the country, federal prosecutors have pursued aggressively criminals who steal identities and then claim fraudulent tax refunds, leaving unsuspecting Americans in the middle of tangled webs of stolen identities and fraudulent tax refunds.

In Memphis, Tenn., for example, two women filed hundreds of false returns using identifying information of deceased individuals, including Social Security numbers.

Nakita Brooks, 31, and Cheryl Wright, 30, are estimated to have cost taxpayers $1 million to $2.5 million.

They were shameless in how they tried to cover up their crime as well. They set up tax return services using stolen identities and put these names down as the people who prepared the fraudulent returns.

Among the people whose identities were stolen in this way was a 9-year old girl from Indiana.

Brooks and Wright face up to 10 years for their crimes.

While their crime was despicable, and somewhat shocking given that a 9-year-old’s identity was stolen, federal prosecutors aren’t focused only on headlinegrabbing examples of tax fraud. They’re also focused on cases in which average taxpayers cheat on their taxes.

“These cases affirm that the Department of Justice is committed to investigating and prosecuting all types of tax fraud,” said Assistant Attorney General for the Tax Division Kathryn Keneally.

There are many examples of the type Keneally is describing.

In Conyers, Ga., Kenneth and Kimberly Horner were charged with four counts of filing false personal and corporate tax returns. The Horners, who owned and operated Topcat Towing and Recovery, underreported gross receipts and total income on their corporate and personal tax returns, according to the government’s indictment.

Across the country, an Oregon man who’d recently moved from Wisconsin pleaded guilty to three counts of willfully failing to file 3 years of income tax returns.

Eric T. Plantenberg, 42, of Bend, Ore., admitted that he made $1.3 million in unreported income.

Plantenberg had been the owner of three Wisconsin companies — Freedom Personal Development, Freedom Professional Services and I-Kinetic.

The Obama Justice Department has long been tough on tax crimes. These most recent comments suggest prosecutors will get tougher.

More than ever before, the focus is on everyday people, with home environments fostering open attitudes, relaxation, a spirit of fun and interpersonal connections.

Contemporary design, with its responsiveness to the human dimension and today’s lifestyles, holds the promise of helping people live in the present – in easygoing environments where it’s a pleasure to simply be!

The secret of successful decorating, as many people are increasingly aware, is neither time, nor money, nor specialized skills – but imagination!

Mixing and matching can be a challenge, but don’t let that frighten or discourage you. Here are some tips to consider when mixing and matching: Scale and proportion are important considerations. Balance your furniture pieces with a mixture of small and large scale items.

Wood tones and finishes are key components to unifying a room. You can mix different species of wood, but I like to try to keep the wood stains in the same color family and tone. Although, darker finishes can blend nicely with some lighter colors. Lacquering a wood piece in black can also be dramatic addition and bring it into the 21st century. When a room has wood floors, it is even more critical to have wood tones coordinate. An area rug or carpeting will sometimes correct this problem.

Fabric patterns and upholstery colors are a factor in coordinating a space. In many rooms the sofa will be the anchor for that space. When choosing fabrics

you can mix florals, checks, geometrics and solids. The trick is to use only one in each category, coordinating the colors and scale. You can add solid color fabrics as needed, highlighting colors found in your other printed fabrics.

Furniture styles can be a challenge in designing a space. Mixing periods can be more of a headache to a designer. Blending country French, classic Italian or Spanish furniture can work if you pair it with a straight line contemporary or transitional design furniture. Consider using a parson style (square leg) to blend with your traditional furniture. If your furniture tends to be in the ornate spectrum, use fully upholstered pieces that have clean transitional lines with no exposed wood.

Another good pairing for an eclectic look is to blend upholstered seating with metal occasional tables. In dining areas, try out combinations such as a wooden table with metal dining chairs, or a glass top table with wooden chairs – simplicity of form gains vitality from a mix of materials.

Wall color will bring a room together. Use an overall color for all walls in an eclectic setting. This is not a time to get creative with accent colors. Use one rich color on all walls to unify the room.

Accessories and lighting play a major role in any room. When accessorizing a heavily ornate or traditional area, use simpler picture frames, art and lamps. If your room is more contemporary and minimalistic, more decorative accessories and objects can be introduced into your room.

Strive for a clutter free environment in eclectic settings. In terms of design, less is often more.

Is Lack of Sleep Killing our Teens?

WELLNESS IN MOTION BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER We all know how important sleep is – if you don’t, go without it (or without enough of it) for a few days and then see what happens, even in the short term. Now consider the established consequences of chronic sleep problems: increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart attack, and stroke, among other health issues.

Who’s suffering? Anyone can experience sleep problems, whether short or long term, but research is revealing one population may be at particular risk: teens – and some of the consequences are issues that already keep worried parents awake at night.

A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests teens who get less than seven hours of sleep a night are more likely to engage in one or more risky health behaviors including texting and driving, drinking and driving (or riding with a driver who’d been drinking), or not wearing a seat belt than teens who get nine or more hours of sleep nightly. Of course, all of the above behaviors increase the risk of serious injury or death.

So, how can you help teens get better sleep? The Cleveland Clinic offers the following advice to help ensure teens get adequate sleep on a nightly basis: Be Consistent: Teens need approximately nine hours of sleep a night to function optimally. To achieve this, try to maintain a consistent sleep-wake schedule throughout the week and even on weekends.

Nap Wisely: A good nap is a great way to rejuvenate, but limit them to 20-30 minutes in the early afternoon only to avoid difficulty falling asleep at night.

Exercise Matters: Consistent exercise of at least 30-60 minutes a day, four-plus times a week, will help teens sleep better - but make sure to avoid exercise within 2-3 hours of bedtime.

Eat Smart: Going to bed hungry (or too full) can cause sleep problems, so eat healthy meals throughout the day and a light snack 1-2 hours before bedtime.

Preparation Is Key: A quiet, comfortable, dark bedroom is ideal for proper sleep. Another key: Keep it clean (a challenge for many teens) and relaxing.

LUCKY STRIKE B Y T E R R Y R A T N E R , R N , M F A I bowled today for the first time in twenty-some years. It seemed like a good way to spend an afternoon with three young boys, my grandsons, who were on spring break. My motive—I wanted to expose them to a sport that I loved as a child.

The dimly lit bowling alley, located up a flight of stairs, seemed more like a hip bar with its giant muted flat-screen TV’s displaying sports news, hockey and basketball games on the far side of each lane.

My grandchildren had never bowled before and knew very little about how the game was played.

Since the boys were learning math, I felt that an understanding of how to keep score might assist their number skills. My enthusiasm for a lesson in arithmetic combined with a fun time became squashed by the early awakening of ‘modern bowling alleys.’ Now days, it’s all computerized. No need to understand basic addition or any other scoring rules.

When I approached the lane, with a 10-pound bowling ball in hand, I tried not to breathe or think about anything else, except bowling. I wanted my body to perform a series of complex movements that my muscles had memorized years ago. In short, I become a robot, pulling my ball into my chest, performing a quick shimmy with my hips before swinging the ball first backward, then forward. My arm, a pendulum of kinetic energy, as I walked the five measured steps toward the foul line. I released the ball and watched it glide across the oiled wooden planks as if it was floating, hydroplaning, spinning counterclockwise along a trajectory route which took it straight to the left-hand gutter. Oh well, I still have a few frames left.

I tell the kids, “Timing is everything. When your timing is right, when your arms, legs, and torso all move in rhythm toward the lane, you have better balance.

When you’re balanced, you’re more accurate. And that’s when the magic begins.”

Three serious young faces looked up at me and one by one they take their turn.

The boys did well, considering it was their first try at the game. Of course, they had rubber bumpers on either side to prohibit gutter balls. Why didn’t they have that when I was young?

My final score, a number I frequently ended up with as a 12-year old girl, reflected my ‘out of practice’ status—74. My grandchildren beat me with an 83, 77, and an 89.

I did however have a strike on the sixth frame. The ball neared the edge of the lane, then veered back toward the center, as if guided by remote control. The planned hook carried the ball back just in time. In a heartbeat, what was a wide, sneering mouth of pins was soon nothing.

I have to admit I felt proud in front of the boys. After a bit of pre-game bragging,

this strike seemed to make my ‘love of bowling believable.’ I walked back to the table listening to squeals of ‘wow, that was great.’ But instead of feeling good, I was displeased. My one strike wasn’t good enough.

With a pencil, I jotted down notes on a folded piece of blue paper and told the kids exactly what I thought I did wrong.

On my last roll something happened. I could tell by the sound of the pins. As the clutter cleared, I saw the nine pin, (the second from the right on the last row) still standing.

I watched the chaos of the flying pins, each rotating right past the upright nine. I craned my neck, watched and hoped. But the nine pin never dropped.

I blamed it on the distraction, the music, sport TV’s, and lighting. The kids tried to cheer me up, “At least you got the kingpin.”

The best part of this field trip didn’t involve the score, but the fun I had exposing my grandchildren to a sport I loved and teaching them correct form, sportsmanship, rules of etiquette and scoring, even if they won’t need to put the math to work. They loved outperforming their grandmother and can’t wait to try again. Next time we’ll find an old-fashion bowling alley. Not the kind with teenage ‘pin setters’ in the background that I once swooned over, but a bowling alley that allows you to score and bowl without postmodern technology. A place that serves hot dogs, French fries with ketchup, and delivers it to your lane. The kind that offers a rosin bag to dry your hands to allow for that perfect roll. Just give me a pencil and score sheet and let me keep track of the numbers. It isn’t difficult—even a child can do it.

SUMMERTIME STORYTELLING Come and enjoy fun, hands-on children’s storytelling and crafts every Saturday in June and July from 10 a.m. to noon at Pueblo Grande Museum! Saturday programs are $5 each, include a light snack, and Museum entrance for participants.

Vacation Planning for Your Estate

BY LI B BY BAN K S, T H E L AW O FFI CE O F LI B BY BAN K S, PLLC Many of my clients come in to do their estate planning right before a major vacation or trip. Particularly if you are travelling overseas, having things in place before you go can give you great peace of mind.

Here are some thoughts on getting things done before you leave for that wonderful trip.

Make sure you have guardians in place for minor children. If you have minor children, it’s crucial to have documents in place appointing guardians. Don’t leave this to chance, or worse, to the court to decide. Putting your choice in a legal document assures that the people you want to raise your children will do so. Which do you want your children to hear: “Your parents asked me to take care of you, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do,” OR “We’re not sure where you’re going to end up, but don’t worry, it will all be okay eventually.”

Be sure you have the right plan in place if you travel without the kids. If you are going on a trip without your children, make sure whoever you are leaving them with has all the proper documents to allow them to make healthcare decisions and have temporary guardianship for the children. A friend told a story of how she went to Show Low – just a few hours away, luckily – and had to return because her daughter got something stuck in her throat. Because it wasn’t an emergency situation, the doctors wouldn’t treat the girl until my friend got there.

She hadn’t left anything giving her caregiver the right to agree to treatment. Next time she went away, she had all the right documents ready.

Review and update your existing estate plan. A big mistake I see in estate planning is the “set it and forget it” syndrome. All of us need to review our estate plan from time to time, especially as our families evolve. Certainly, you should review your plan when things change for you or your spouse. However, you should also review your plan if your children have gotten married, had babies or gotten a divorce. Check your plan to see if it still does what you want, and that no one is included that you do not want to get your property. If one of your parents has died, you may need to upgrade your plan due to an inheritance. If the trustee or executor is no longer able to serve, or no longer capable, you need to change who will serve.

DO YOU NEED A WILL OR TRUST? Do you have a minor child who may need a guardian?

Do you want to avoid probate and pay the least amount of taxes possible?

Do you know who will care for you and your property if you become incapacitated?

Let your vacation serve as the stimulus to make changes and updates.

Review your plan for minor children. If you have named guardians, are they still the right people? If your children are off to high school next year, the guardian you picked for them as infants might not be the right fit anymore. Also, be sure to name a back-up in case your first choice cannot serve.

Review your insurance. Check the amount of your life insurance coverage and see if it still meets your family’s needs. Consider getting long-term care insurance to help pay for the costs of long-term care (and preserve your assets for your family) in the event you and/or your spouse should need it due to illness or injury.

Review titles and beneficiary designations. If you have a revocable living trust and have not changed titles to property and accounts to place them in the name of the trust, now is the time to do so. If you don’t, your family will have to file probate. Also, this is a good time to check beneficiary designations on your insurance and retirement plans to be sure you’ve named the right people. Once you’ve done so, you will know your estate plan will work as you intended.

Secure or review healthcare documents. Everyone over the age of 18 needs certain documents (this is an important reminder for those of us whose adult children are just now turning 18). They are: 1) Durable Power of Attorney for Heath Care, which gives another person legal authority to make health care decisions (including life and death decisions) for you if you are unable to make them for yourself; 2) HIPPA Authorizations, which give written consent for doctors to discuss your medical situation with others, including family members; and (3) Advanced Directive or Living Will to let your loved ones know what you want (and don’t want) at the end of life. Make sure you have these documents in place and with you. This is especially important for couples who are not married, or for people who rely on friends for such things, rather than family members.

Organize your accounts and documents. Make sure that if something happens, your documents can be easily found. Then make a list of ALL of your assets and where they can be found, including user names and passwords. Print a hard copy in case your computer is stolen or crashes, put it in a safe, secure place and let someone you trust know where to find it. Be sure to include on your master list any passwords that might be needed to access your computer and files.

Last, but not least: Have a great time! You are likely going to come back safe and sound, but you’ll have great peace of mind knowing that everything’s in place in case something unexpected happens. I’m always happy to help clients put their estate plan in place before a trip.

NCL Grows a Green Thumb

BY DEBRA KLINE National Charity League, Inc., (NCL, Inc.) sponsors various local philanthropies, including Growing Together, A Giving Garden located in Central Phoenix at the corner of Glendale and Central Avenues. Growing Together was founded five years ago by volunteers wanting to help nourish those in need with healthy, organic fruits and vegetables.

Today, organic fruits and vegetables from the garden are dropped off weekly at places such as the Living Streams Church Food Pantry, Lighthouse Foster Care and Phoenix Dream Center. In addition, for the third season in a row, NCL, Inc. is participating in their Adopt-aBed program where NCL, Inc. volunteers will help plant and grow a new crop in the spring and fall months.

North Phoenix Site of New Arts Center

BY JAC K YA R D L E Y Phoenix Center for the Arts in partnership with the City of Phoenix opened a new facility adjacent to the Mountain View Community Center at 1106 E. Grovers Ave north of Bell Road). The new facility, named the Thunderbird Arts Center, offers programs for adults and children which include printmaking, glass fusing, painting and drawing, photography and youth art.

Although the Grand Opening was celebrated on April 16, some classes were held the week before. Kate Foster of Moon Valley attended a class in printing with solar etching. Kate said she is “… really looking forward to having a branch of Phoenix Center for the Arts right here in our neighborhood. It will be nice not to have to drive across town to be able to take a wide range of classes with instructors who are knowledgeable and helpful.” Kate has taken other classes in printing and has friends who have taken painting and pottery classes at the downtown center at 3rd St and the I-10.

Just ask Leon!?! Riding a little too fast with a low tire transitioning from pavement to sidewalk, down I went! But I did have safety equipment and so only have a skinned knee; and, of course, damaged pride!

I have another family friend who was not so fortunate. She was riding through a tunnel but with no helmet and only flip flops. She put her foot out to soften the blow but instead caught her foot which ended up twisting backwards. Many broken bones in the ankle, major surgery, and with at least an eight week noweight bearing recovery.

Safety stuff is no fun, hot, heavy, and restrictive.

But the alternative is less fun. Best is to ride with good or cycling shoes, not bare feet, sandals, or flip flops. Cycling shorts are padded where you need it most, where you sit, and offer some crash proof protection. Gloves pad the palm of your hand plus give you a better grip on the handle bars for more control. Again offer less skin loss. Another bad choice is no shirt. A regular sleeved shirt or a good cycling jersey is best. Jerseys also offer more skin protection plus have pockets in back to carry your personal items.

Lights, mirrors, and reflectors are all helpful, too.

But most important is a helmet.

Helmets come in all kinds of weights, shapes, colors, and ratings. The new rating is MIPS, Multi-directional Impact Protection System. It is a helmet within a helmet which is more weight and less ventilation, but stays on your head better and offers much more protection.

During neighborhood walks, Aries eagerly strains at the leash to greet every dog lover along the way with kisses and tail wags. Not only is the German Shepherd an excellent walking partner, but this polite and well-mannered 5-year-old is past his rowdy puppy days, and he aims to please having mastered the basic commands. As a former stray, Aries was unable to carry on with a severely injured leg after he was hit by a car. It’s hard to say what his fate might’ve been had he not been rescued by the Arizona Humane Society where more than two-thirds of the animals arrive injured and in need of medical treatment. REVERSE MORTGAGE STRATEGIES THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON Reverse Mortgages are “loans that give homeowners an advance on their home equity and allow them to delay repayment until the home is sold.” This was written

by Robert Powell in the Wall Street Journal on March 21, 2016. As promised in my article from last month, this month’s article will outline strategies that might make a Reverse Mortgage work for you.

Lump Sum – Taking a lump sum to pay off an existing “forward” mortgage is probably the most frequent use of a Reverse Mortgage. The net result is eliminating the monthly mortgage payment. It is like a monthly cash infusion into the household budget. Approximately 40% of seniors aged 65 or older have a mortgage, and this percentage has more than doubled since 1992.

While there are no restrictions on how the money is used, it is highly recommended that the proceeds not be used to incur more debt, that may be difficult to pay off, such as using it to make a down payment on a second home. The smart play is treating the home equity as a valuable financial cushion and not using it, for example, on vacations or expensive cars.

Line of Credit – This seems to be the option of choice for financial advisors. Whether or not there is an immediate need for funds, this is a very versatile tool that can be used as the need arises. It is non-cancelable and the unused portion continues to grow over the years regardless of the future value of the home, giving the borrower access to more cash as time goes on.

One scenario is that in a bear market, rather than accessing their investment portfolios the borrower taps the LOC and when the portfolio recoups from the downturn, the LOC can be paid back. Thus, losses in the down market are not locked in, and the line of credit is fully available the next time it is needed.

The line of credit can be used as a source of income to delay taking Social Security benefits thereby increasing the eventual benefits. It can be paid back, increasing future availability, however this is not a requirement.

Reverse Mortgage proceeds are not taxed. One good strategy is to use these funds to pay tax liabilities due on the distributions from retirement accounts (such as IRAs) avoiding “tax bracket creep.”

Tenure – A set monthly income can be guaranteed for as long as the borrower remains in the home. This annuity-like feature can provide a lot of security for those with limited incomes in retirement.

Mother’s Day SENIOR MOMENTS BY DAN SEAGREN When I was asked to write a piece for Mother’s Day 2016, I said why not? After all, Selma Hill was my mother, but she passed away when I was three years old.

The fact is, I barely knew her. I think I remember a couple incidents where she was involved, so what can I say?

Quite a bit. So, let me begin. She was born in Sweden in 1892, the last one of 13 children. An older sister Emma emigrated to the United States, married and had several children, all older than I. I met one of them who had recently been discharged from the Navy. I had just been sworn in and was visiting the family before my induction when he insisted I try on his Navy uniform. They took a Polaroid picture (remember those instant antiquities?) and I had fun telling my Navy buddies I had a twin brother.

My mother left her home in Sweden because the small farm could no longer support a grown family (often farms were subdivided among the children until there was no more land to divide).

She had eleven living siblings and took a job as a poorly paid seamstress miles from home. Later her sister Emma made arrangements for her to come to Minneapolis and she arrived in 1914, learned English, became a Registered Nurse, met my father and a romance commenced.

Years later, she told my dad that if they didn’t get married when he returned from an overseas assignment, their engagement was over. He returned after nearly one year abroad and they were married in 1925. I joined the family in 1927 and my sister Miriam was born a year later. My mother, to my knowledge, never returned to her homeland as cancer prematurely ushered her into her Heavenly home in 1931.

My father rarely talked about my mother. Back then it may have been taboo but it was difficult for him and so I kept my silence – way too long.

Now I realize my serious error because even her contemporaries are gone. What I would give to live my life over is incalculable. What I can give is a word to the living: please don’t make my mistake. How many second chances we get we may never know much less pursue. My father married again in 1935 and my birth mother’s memories remain invisible.

Used to be we worried about night break ins, now they ring your doorbell in broad daylight between 10 and 4 to see if anyone is home, go around the back and then break in! They got it down to minutes in and out grabbing stuff and leaving a mess. The whole city is divided into precincts and we have two right here in Moon Valley. When we have neighbors interacting it provides additional blanket of security.

With summer approaching and people scooting out of town to cooler places isn’t it nice that we are watching out for each other. Canadians Can be Interesting Neighbors

BY FROST Y KROENING At our Friday night socials we have been entertained by a fine homeowner and part-time resident from Canada. As he described the weather and health care system and activities in Canada, we have come to understand more about our neighbor country to the north.

Canadians often don’t quite understand us as we work slowly through health care planning for our country. I went on the Physicians for a National Health Program website and found some statistics on Canadians seeking care in the United States. Quite an interesting story and one unexpected.

Earlier in this new century, Canadians were 5% of the home purchasers here and helped push home prices up in Phoenix. Last year many fewer Canadians were buying Phoenix properties and many were selling. This is according to an Arizona Republic article by Catherine Reagor October 14, 2015. Due to lower oil prices, the Canadian dollar (called the “loonie”) fell in value so home owners feel less confident of their futures here. The situation could change and each year will be different.

One thing is certain: many Canadians seek the sun in the wintertime!

Our new friend had to go back to Canada due to strict limits on how much time he could spend here each year. Staying longer would entail new taxes. The Winnipeg Free Press, in an article dated September 9, 2011, spelled out how Canadians can hold property in cross-border trusts to be set up prior to purchase of property. It is all somewhat complicated. But, all in all, we have really enjoyed the three homeowners in our area who spend time with us. In our neighborhood, they usually do provide excellent maintenance for their homes during absences. It is so interesting to gain new perspectives on living from our neighbors to the north.

Then you grew. Any time music was on with dancing on TV, you would copy the dancers. So, I enrolled you in dance classes at a early age. You relished it. Oh what joy this brought you. You continued on with dance in High School. Our girl in the pink tu tu not only my daughter but danced her way into our hearts. Now, any time you will give birth to our granddaughter.

I wonder if she will have a desire to own a pink tu tu and leap into this Grandma’s heart?

How can I increase my chances of surviving a stroke?

When identifying and treating a stroke, every second counts. Learn what to look for if you think you or a loved one are having a stroke.

What is a stroke?

Every 40 seconds, an American has a stroke. It happens when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain either bursts, ruptures or is blocked by a clot. As a result, the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, and pieces of the brain die.

That adds up to 795,000 a year, making stroke the No. 4 cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability.

Yet the American Heart Association says that nine in 10 Americans don’t think of stroke as a major health concern. It’s why a lot of stroke patients are treated in the intensive care unit.

Is there more than one type of stroke?

There are two kinds of stroke, hemorrhagic and ischemic. A hemorrhagic stroke is caused by a blood vessel that breaks and bleeds into the brain and has a higher mortality rate.

The most common type of stroke is ischemic. It can be treated with a clotbuster called tPA (tissue plasminogen activator). Yet only one to two percent of eligible patients, out of 750,000 patients annually, receive it. Why? Because there’s less than a three-hour window of opportunity to administer tPA and too few specialists who can quickly prescribe it. Admission to a neurological/neurosurgical ICU led by a neuro-intensivist has been associated with improved stroke outcomes and lower mortality.
