Lookout Mountain Growing Together BY L AU R E N D E L R O SS O, 1S T G R A D E T E AC H E R The garden is planted and maintained by the 6 first grade classes at Lookout Mountain Elementary School and supports our science standards: Observing living things in our environment, life cycles, and collecting, observing, and recording data. The students keep science journals, and record and measure weekly growth and changes in the garden. They compare different types of seeds and plant life, and learn which types of plants grow well in our desert environment. The garden is fully funded by the donations of parents and local businesses. Carol Burns, a first grade parent, is serving as this year’s Garden Volunteer coordinator. Through the generous donations of parents, she has been able to purchase seeds, soil, hoses, watering cans, and other materials for the garden. In addition, she worked to gather donations from Moon Valley Nurseries, Sams Club and Home Depot. The garden is maintained by the first grade students during their afternoon recess times, and supervised by the first grade teachers and parent volunteers. Students are also working to enrich the soil with coffee grounds from McDonald’s, as a part of their “Good Neighbor Good Grounds” recycling program. Throughout the spring, the students will work to water and weed the garden, as well as to harvest the fruits.....

#KnockOutHunger

The sumo match-up that everyone was waiting for became a reality thanks to the generous contributions of WESD staffers and Pure Heart Christian Fellowship members! Together, the two groups met their goals, donating more than 13,000 pounds of food to #WESDCommunityFoodDrive2016. Everyone gathered at Pure Heart Church to watch as Superintendent Dr. Paul Stanton and Pastor Dan Steffen went mano a mano in sumo suits! Great events such as this happened throughout WESD’s 32 schools in an effort to collect as much canned food as possible to benefit St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance. Last year the district and its community partners collected a total of 151,676 pounds of food – second largest food collection in AZ! More than 40 business, churches and organizations are working with the district to support this effort. Continued on page 3... Lookout Mountain Elementary School and Mountain
