Shaw Butte Chiefs BY ALEC HENDEN Shaw Butte Little League's Junior (13-14 year old) Chiefs went on a great late season run winning six of their last eight games to advance to the District 2 championship game for the spring baseball season where they were defeated by a team from Arrowhead Little League on June 1st. The Chiefs were one of two Junior teams that Shaw Butte placed in the District 2 league that played its games at Peoria Sports Complex. The Chiefs were primarily made up of 8th graders who graduated from Mountain Sky in May and now are playing summer baseball for Thunderbird High School. Shaw Butte is our neighborhood Little League in Moon Valley. The next Shaw Butte Little League (SBLL) season for kids ages 5-14 will be in August. All parents are encouraged to go to SBLL.us for more information and to get their kids involved in the fun of Little League Baseball.

BY BRE T T BUDDE The Thunderbird Chiefs Varsity Baseball team finished this season as the 2016 District II, Division II Champions with a record of 25-7. After making the State Playoffs, we ended our season 5th Place overall in Division II, Thunderbirdâ€™s highest ranking in the past 5 years. Our Head Coach, Clay Klavitter, was named Division II, Section II Coach of the Year and 6 of our players were named to various State Section, All-Star and All-Star Academic teams. Team chemistry was the key to our success. Weekly character coaching and bi-weekly team dinners hosted by our families kept our group tight knit and focused throughout the season. It was energizing to see the stands always packed with family, friends, fellow Thunderbird students, administration and teachers cheering us on. What also made our team unique is that all 8 Seniors played in Shaw Butte Little League together, some as far back as 14 years ago in tee ball. There is a special bond and friendship not only with us players, but our families as well. Rusconi’s American Kitchen Chef-driven restaurants have become increasingly popular as the Phoenix food scene has continued to evolve during recent years. But Michael Rusconi, of Rusconi’s American Kitchen, takes his level of ownership involvement to an unsurpassed level. When he made the transition from serving as chef of prestigious resort restaurants, including LON’s at the Hermosa Inn, to heading up his own restaurant, Michael was involved in every area of development. He says, “I wanted to apply all the skills I’d learned in the high-end hotel industry and present them at a moderate price.” Beyond the development of the menu, which features regional American food with Spanish, Italian and French influences prepared over a wood-burning grill, Michael designed the layout of the restaurant, was heavily involved in the construction phase, and even refurbished all the tables himself. “It’s truly a chef-designed restaurant, from the front of the house to the back,” says Michael, who is still at the restaurant pretty much every day. Rusconi’s American Kitchen offers casual fine dining and has been awarded several significant awards including No. 1 Restaurant in Phoenix by TripAdvisor. Michael says his hotel background and online restaurant ratings including Yelp and Open Table, have brought in a very well traveled clientele. He says, “We get a lot of customers that are just in Phoenix for a layover and decide to check us out.” Rusconi’s American Kitchen is open for happy hour and dinner nightly, lunch Tuesday through Saturday, and Sunday brunch, and features popular Wine Makers dinners.

Trapped In Moon Valley LET TER FROM THE EDITOR June is typically a month we celebrate men, our fathers, daddies, grandpas, and the many other monumental men in our lives. I learned of Muhammad Ali’s death yesterday, as I thought about men in our lives and the influence they have had on us, I smiled at the vast lessons, tributes, fundraising, and fun he brought to many people far and near. He was a man of great stature and rebelled in many political and world fights for freedom, equality, and more importantly his health and the research and education surrounding his horrible disease. Ali had suffered for three decade from Parkinson’s, a progressive neurological condition that slowly robbed him of both his verbal grace and his physical dexterity, but never his dignity. Not only a three-time World Heavyweight Champion boxer, an Olympian , but he had also been denied his fighting license, jailed and stripped of his passport early on for refusing to be indicted into the armed forces. “The Great” as many referred to him was also involved in the huge fundraising event, held right here in Arizona, and helped raise millions of dollars for many different charities. As we look up to our fathers, daddies, the special men in our life this month, we will also say goodbye to one of the greatest athletes in our country. I once had the pleasure of meeting Mohammad Ali, his wife and daughter at a holiday party for children here in Phoenix, where each and every child went home with a brand new bike. Even during this time as his health declined, he sat there with a smile on his face, as his family helped him maneuver in and out amongst the crowds, a true hero. “Live every day like it’s your last because someday you’re going to be right.” Mohammad Ali

Dear Moon Valley, By the time you read this article, there will have been a big change in the Phoenix Council District 3 Office, the appointment of a new District 3 Councilperson. On May 31, 2016, Councilman Bill Gates resigned his Phoenix City Council seat to run for the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. As there is more than a year left in the term, the City Council must appoint an interim councilperson to fill the seat until a special election can occur. The Mayor scheduled the special meeting to appoint the interim councilperson on June 14, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. Candidates interested in the appointment are required to submit their applications by June 10, and will have five minutes to address the Councilmembers on June 14. The Council will then nominate and vote on a candidate to fill the appointment. The interim councilmember will take office as soon as he/she recites and signs the oath and serve until a new councilperson is elected by the residents in Phoenix District 3. The special election required to elect the permanent councilmember will coincide with the November elections on November 8, 2016. Any candidate interested in running for the District 3 seat was required to submit an application by June 10. If no candidate receives a majority of the vote on November 8, the two candidates with the highest ballot totals will proceed to a runoff election on March 14, 2017. The candidate with the majority of votes will then take office as soon as the council announces and declares the results of the election and the council-elect recites and signs the oath.

Last month the new MIPS, Multi-directional Impact Protection System, helmet was addressed as it offersmore protection. This month the “life” of a helmet is discussed. Even though they still look good, helmets don’t last forever offering little protection after two to three years, and need to be replaced. We live in the heat of Arizona, sometimes helmets roll around in a hot vehicle or even in a garage, which takes its toll weakening them. Helmets get bumped around and dropped creating cracks or breaks.Helmets are not always properly secured as the latches and straps also crack and break. The industry is working to make helmets that work better for all, not only with more shapes and colors; but that are lighter and cooler than before. Helmets with better latches and straps are being produced; and also have a padded band around the perimeter of the head to adjust for a much better fit. Kinesio Tape BY DR. JAMEY REICHOW You’ve probably seen bright colored tape on professional athletes in the Olympics, NBA, NFL etc. and wondered, “what is that, what are they wearing”. Or maybe you’ve seen it on a co-worker, neighbor, or on a patient leaving Moon Valley Chiropractic. So what is this sometimes subtle other times flamboyant therapy that people are wearing? The answer...Kinesiotape (KT). First some background...In the 1970s Dr. Kenzo Kase D.C. recognized the need for a new therapeutic approach when he was observing and treating traumatized tissues and muscles that did not respond to standard taping/strapping methods. So with his knowledge and understanding of the body along with research, Dr. Kase designed Kinesio Taping. This new therapy’s intent is to facilitate the body’s natural healing process and prolong the benefits of treatment after patients leave the office. KT methods are designed to allow support and stability for muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion. The method has been successful in treating a variety of orthopedic, neuromuscular, neurological and medical conditions by effecting the circulatory, lymphatic, neural, muscular, skeletal and fascial systems. It has many applications. KT can change muscle tone, move lymphatic fluids, correct movement patterns, joint support, and improve posture. This method of taping is very different than the standard taping techniques that reduce ranges of motion, do not support the fascia, and in some cases inhibit the actual healing process. KT has elasticity and breathability properties that allow it to accomplish such goals over a longer period of time. It can be worn 3-5 days at a time giving the recipient much longer therapeutic exposure. In the 7 years I’ve been utilizing KT, I have treated many conditions with positive results. To name a few: Sprains, strains, deactivating chronic tight muscles, activating weak muscles, posture correction, disperse inflammation, joint support, bruising, shin splints, plantar fascitis, golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow, runner’s knee, bursitis, post surgical knee replacements, etc. It’s a terrific adjunct to chiropractic treatment. Why Do I Get Muscle Spasms & How Can I Prevent Them? BY J EFF CR EN SH AW, EL E M EN T S M A SSAG E Muscle cramps are caused by muscle spasms or an involuntary tightening of the muscles. Besides the leg and foot, common body parts to be affected by muscle spasms are the arms, hands, stomach, back, and the rib cage area. A commonlyhonored home remedy for someone suffering from muscle cramps is to load up on bananas, as it is widely believed that muscle spasms are caused by a lack of potassium. There is some merit to this belief, but there are many more possible causes for muscle spasms or cramps, such as dehydration, muscle overuse, insufficient stretching before or after activity, calcium or magnesium deficiency, or poor blood circulation. There are even a handful of medications that can increase one’s risk for muscle spasms. The greatest tip for dealing with painful muscle spasms is to prevent their attacks in the first place. Your muscles always need to be primed and prepared for the activities they’re being asked to do. Also, even if you don’t necessarily feel thirsty, drink up! If your muscles are working, they demand a proper balance of sodium,

electrolytes and potassium. If muscles are dehydrated, they’re also being depleted of these essential nutrients. If you have already been experiencing muscle spasms and cramps, some communication, and sessions with your massage therapist might be the needed steps to bring relief. While your muscles might feel too painful while cramped to be touched (although some light strokes will eventually bring relief mid-cramp), receiving a massage before or after muscle spasms can bring preventative or healing relief. Massage increases circulation and relaxes muscles, decreasing the chance for frequent cramping. Muscle spasms are often the result of overuse, where the muscle fibers “knot up” to help and protect a strained, injured area. As a therapist smoothes, lengthens and breaks up the knots, you’ll be less likely to continue to injure that area, leading to fewer spasms.

I couldn’t wait until summer break, so I tried to make the transformation during a 4 day weekend in April. During Spring Break in March, one place I went to said that it would take months to be grey again!? So on Friday, April 22nd I went to Sally’s Beauty Supply and bought 2 boxes of color remover. It turned my hair orange. The next day I went to see Kaitlyn, a color specialist at Sincerely Yours ‘HAIR’ Salon. She cut my hair super short and sassy and then bleached it two times trying to get it white, so we could dye it grey. All we got was blonde! After two days of treatments and processing my usually silky, soft hair felt like straw. We decided to wait a few weeks before trying to bleach again, but my husband loves the blonde. My boys still haven’t acknowledged it. I never in a million years thought I could pull this color off. Who knew!? My students said that I looked happier, while adults say that the blonde brightens up my face. Only one person said I should dye my eyebrows to match. I thought that was the dumbest idea I’d ever heard! Who knows how long I’ll keep it this way. Ultimately I really want to be grey

again and stop all the coloring nonsense completely, but for now it’s fun and different. Most people do a double take, or just don’t recognize me at all, like my students who thought I was a substitute. My regular stylist, Rene (pronounced Rain-nee) at Great Clips was so funny when she realized who I was. It’s my sunglasses that usually tip folks off that I’m me. I’ve worn the same Oakleys for so many years; they’ve become part of my identity. I should change them up and throw people off even more, going incognito! The Joy Bus Diner B Y K AT E LY N W E B E R Jennifer Caraway has a dream to make the valley of Phoenix “ a happier place, one meal at a time.” In 2011, she opened one of the most rewarding and incredible charities in Phoenix, The Joy Bus. This charity was founded as a result of the experience Caraway had while helping her dear friend, Joy, who passed away from cancer. Caraway would bring extra food and treats to Joy while she was homebound and, though Joy received care and support from her amazing friends and family, Caraway “realized at that point that there was a lot of people out there that didn’t have that support system.” And thus The Joy Bus was created. Volunteers drive fresh, chef-inspired, ready-to-eat meals made with natural, organic ingredients to the homes of cancer patients weekly. This philanthropy has changed lives and now Jennifer is ready to kickstart the next project: The Joy Bus Diner. The Joy Bus Diner is soon to open on the corner of Shea and the SR51, and will serve hot and fresh breakfast and lunch foods Tuesday through Sunday to Phoenicians. One is named Cactus. Another, Greenway. The third is referred to as 3A ES2. And the fourth, well, it’s so well secluded in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve that one barely can see its top, let alone distinguish its name. Moon Valley residents heading south on North Cave Creek Road, at the intersection where East Cactus and East Thunderbird roads exchange names, will see Cactus, a prominent, rotund structure nestled amongst crags and peaks in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. You’ll run into Greenway if you hike the preserve, starting from the North 16th Street trailhead parking lot, where that roadway temporary terminates as a dead end. You’ll see the round, hulking presence at that site, a few blocks south of the intersection of East Paradise Lane and North 16th Street. The esoterically-named 3A ES2 is readily viewed immediately south of North Mountain Park and due west of the Arizona Army National Guard armory at 10222 N. Seventh St. It’s the one with an elephantine trunk of a pipeline protruding from its base. And if you strain your eyes due east of the intersection of East Hearn and North Cave Creek roads, you’ll see just the tips of something quite secluded and tucked into the nearby hills. It’s a huge tank; the other three are, too. Each of the metal foursomes holds for water storage and serves our Moon Valley and north-central Phoenix neighborhoods and businesses, says Stephanie Bracken, the City of Phoenix public-information officer for the water-services department. They’re all lonely looking, weathered tan structures, surrounded by ample chainlink fencing in generally out-of-the way locations. Their nearest neighbors normally are quail, rabbits and the birds fluttering about. Built with municipal foresight for the still-growing city’s water needs and erected by engineering firms from 1965 until 1978, these four tanks all remain fully operational and are electronically monitored by water-services personnel 24 hours a day. The small brick or block huts inside the fencing house mechanical devices linked with its particular tank and its role in the city’s water-distribution system. No Trespassing signs punctuate the fencing; authorized personnel only are allowed inside the wire blockades, the warnings advise. So don’t try crossing the barriers; it’s a punishable Class 5 felony offense. The local tanks all stand about 30 to 35 yards tall and have diameters ranging up to 200 feet. Each can be filled with one to 10 million gallons of the fluid of life, depending on seasonal needs, Bracken says. Positioned thusly in the preserve, the water-services department owns the elevated parcels of land upon which the tanks and their immediate structures sit. These hilly locations assist in generating sufficient water pressure to ease the liquid’s passage to surrounding areas as needed, North Area Parks Supervisor Isaac Lewis says. So, give a friendly nod to the formidable tanks when washing the car, doing the dishes or while driving or hiking past them. They’re all standing nearby, readily serving our neighborhood.

Working with a Design Professional DESIGN SOLUTIONS BY ROBERT ALAN MINOR For many people, working with an interior designer is a new and challenging experience. Here are some tips in choosing the perfect professional designer for your home. First, determine the scope of your project. Make a list of your priorities and what you want to achieve. Will you need a designer with a specific specialty? While most professionals are able to tackle any project, there are designers that specialize in kitchens, bathrooms, media rooms and exterior spaces. A good place to start a search is through your friends, associates and co-workers. Ask for referrals, and follow up with a quick tour of their completed project. Other research can be done by looking at magazine and newspaper articles - especially if you find a particular room design or style you like. Do an initial interview with the designer by phone. Have an outline of questions to be asked; such as, number of years in business, degrees, professional affiliations, design specialties and style, favorite projects and fee schedule. Another important question is to ascertain his/her project load. Can the project be done in a timely fashion that fits within your schedule? If you are comfortable with the interview, schedule a working meeting at your home. Be prepared to present and discuss your needs, goals, objectives and budget. A good line of communication is an essential element in working with any designer, and there must be an honest flow of information. You must be able to work together in a patient, constructive way with all of your needs clearly understood. When I start working with a new client I spend the majority of this meeting listening and observing. Understanding their lifestyle, habits, likes and dislikes is necessary for a successful project. While ideas and suggestions may arise from this meeting, it does take time to assimilate and formulate a specific design plan. Don’t expect a major plan at this meeting, especially if you haven’t actually retained him/ her as your designer yet.

Addicted to Mobile Devices: Can We Break the Habit?

You’ve probably suspected it for at least the past several years, particularly if you have a preteen or teenage child, but now teens themselves have confirmed it: they’re addicted to their mobile devices. According to a survey conducted by nonprofit organization Common Sense Media, one in two (50 percent) of teens say they are addicted to their mobile devices. What’s more, nearly eight in 10 (78 percent) of teens check their mobile devices at least every hour, and 72 percent “feel the need to immediately respond to texts, social-networking messages, and other notifications.” And teens aren’t the only culprits when it comes to being addicted: According to the survey, “Technology Addiction: Concern, Controversy, and Finding Balance” 27 percent of parents say they’re addicted to their mobile devices. When parents were asked about teen addiction to mobile devices, and vice versa, the numbers were similar: Fifty-nine percent of parents said teens are addicted to mobile devices, while 28 percent of teens said parents are addicted. If there’s any good news, it’s that many teens and parents share a concern for doing something about their addictions: According to the survey, approximately one in two parents “very often” or “occasionally” try to spend less time consumed with their mobile devices, while approximately one in three teens do the same.

BIG BAY BOOM B Y T E R R Y R A T N E R , R N , M F A The San Diego Bay fireworks display, in 2012, lasted for 18 glorious seconds. What a spectacular sight from the cockpit of my boyfriend’s sailboat, a Freedom 36 Cat Ketch with two unstayed carbon fiber masts—the main and mizzen. Memorizing that piece of technical information didn’t come easy, but allowed me to identify his boat while walking back from the parking lot or the Marina’s shower room. It’s easy to become lost and disoriented when sailboats are lined up alongside each other, looking like sets of twins, and all you have are vague color discrepancies of sail covers separating one boat from another. It’s even easier to lose your way when you’re in love. Richard and I had been dating for months before I said ‘yes’ to accompanying him on a four-day weekend trip to SD where his boat was docked. This July 4th festivity not only signified my becoming a bona fide sailor or first mate,’ but also when we became first-time parents to our Bedlington puppy, Gracie, who we bought from a breeder in Coronado Island. It was as if the Gods were welcoming her into the world, into our lives, with an array of colors exploding out of the sky while we watched mesmerized wondering if the incredible lightshow filled with falling tinsel and stars was a sign of something significant—something we’d never forget. Sitting on the cockpit benches in the stern of the boat, the show lit up the harbor and every yacht in view had a giant halo surrounding it. But as quickly as it began, five minutes before the scheduled blastoff of rockets and flares, its ending left all of us wanting more. The Big Bay Boom, which was estimated at the cost of $165,000, ended prematurely and left half million spectators begging for more. We waited patiently alongside neighbor boaters, listening to the ‘Ooh’s and Ahhs’ before people began clamoring for more and questioning what had gone wrong. “Is this all there is? What exactly happened.” Until that evening, four years ago, I had never witnessed such a stunning lightshow. I remember waiting on deck with Gracie curled on my lap. I felt like a kid trying to sit still before the start of a parade. The fact that this beautiful display of missiles, designed to explode in the usual manner with intermittent bangs and bursts did not go as originally planned, is the very reason I continue to embrace and cling to the memory. And even though this spray of spectacular glitter and glitz was due to human error (a computer glitch), negligence of the promoters igniting every ounce of fireworks at once, it seemed an appropriate way to celebrate Gracie coming

into our lives. A h , fireworks, the stuff of patriotism and juvenile de l i nquenc y, has now become a celebrated love story. This py rote c h n ic phenomenon has been around since the invention of firecrackers 2,000 years ago. The most popular legend tells the story of an ancient Chinese cook working in a field pantry who happened to mix charcoal, sulfur, and saltpeter (all found in his kitchen) and watched it explode. Besides the fact that explosives do and will continue to go off accidently, they are also thought to have the power to fend off evil spirits and ghosts that are frightened by the discharge noises produced when detonated. The English were also fascinated by the cluster of colored stars, fiery sparks, and mushroom clouds that whistled, boomed, and popped. Its popularity grew during the reign of Queen Elizabeth and William Shakespeare mentions fireworks in his literature. And I, someone who never gave much thought to fireworks except for the few times a neighbor lit a cherry bomb, Roman candle, or bottle rocket, look forward to spending every Independence Day on our sailboat, lounging on the deck next to Gracie (now four-years old) and Richard. I love to watch the sky light up the marina. The view of the skyline, the whole entire circle of it, if you turned, you’d see the sun setting behind you, the sky in front becoming pink and soft, then slightly blue again. The land next to the setting sun grows dark—almost black against the orange line of the horizon, the lights of Shelter Island and the hills of Point Loma. And the sky lingering, then finally dark. The prelude to the Big Bay Boom.

Moon Valley “Is it Too Hot to Sell our Home? B Y S H A R O N H E L L A N D, A S S O C I AT E B R O K E R In Realtor terms, it is never too hot temperature wise to sell your home. There are areas that may be too cold and snowy to sell your home, but not here in Phoenix. Regardless of what the temperature is outside there are buyers who want to buy. Buyers have many different reasons for wanting to buy a home. Some of the reasons could be job relocation to our area, selling another home, the need for a bigger home, need to downsize to a smaller less expensive home. Family members can be added, Mom or Dad may need to go to assistive living, or maybe your Star football player needs to move to an area where they can excel in athletics for College scholarships purposes. The reasons could be varied, but does that mean that they will buy when it is 113 degrees? Yes, they will buy a home in 113 degrees! Buyers still buy in the Summer, due to the fact they still have a need to buy. Summer is not the strongest Real Estate Market time to sell a home. Buyers are still out there in an area where the inventory is at its lowest & slowest time in the year. The inventory that is still available may have been on the market for a long time and now the Sellers are more reasonable since the house did not fly off the market in 3 days. The problem we face as Realtors in the areas we specialize in, is continuing to raise the values in our area as Listing Agents and still finding a value when we work

for buyers. Every month when I do the monthly stats for Moon Valley, the average price per sq. foot climbs slightly per month but the averages are at 155.84 list price per sq. and 152.79 sale price with the average days on market coming in at approximately 61 days from list to final closing. Houses do sell for 189.00 per sq. and houses do sell for 128.00 per sq. ft. also in our area a qualified Realtor takes many different aspects when pricing a home correctly. The price the home will sell for is totally determined upon what a Buyer is willing to pay and what a Seller is willing to sell. There are homes which sell & stand out due to décor, retreat backyards, updating throughout to the newest trends, location in a neighborhood, large lot, small lot, pool or no pool, floorplan and price. However, it all comes back to what the house is worth to the Buyer and the comparable sales in the area rule. When Sellers make it difficult to sell, by insisting the high listing price due to the fear they might leave a dollar on the table, are fooling themselves by causing an overpriced home to sit on the market. Unfortunately, those Sellers probably missed the buyer who could have actually bought their home if it had been priced correctly. It is hot, do not be cranky and unreasonable too!

Traveling Tattler in Sri Lanka Moon Valley resident Daniel Spitler traveled to country of Sri Lanka. This was a fatherdaughter trip with Spitler traveling with his daughter, Lindsey Rae Spitler, who works as an attorney in Washington DC. The Spitlers also visited the city of Dubai. “We had an 18hour layover in Dubai, and we

traveled around the city on the local trains,” said Spitler. “We got to visit many of the highlights of the city, including the world’s tallest building.” In Sri Lanka the Spitlers traveled with Intrepid Travel with a group of 12 international travelers. “We traveled with people from Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Germany, and England,” said Spitler. “Sri Lanka had eight UNESCO sights and we were able to visit six of them. Our trip included visits to the ruins of ancient civilizations, a two-day hike in the mountains where we stayed in rural village, a two-day visit to a beautiful beach resort, and then to the historic city of Colombo. I was amazed at how much there was to see and do in Sri Lanka. They have a culture that is uniquely their own, and the food was exceptionally good.”

Estate Planning for Your IRA & other Retirement Accounts BY LI B BY BAN K S, T H E L AW O FFI CE O F LI B BY BAN K S, PLLC A good estate plan takes into account all assets, including IRA’s, 401(k)’s and other retirement accounts. Naming the right beneficiary for these tax-deferred retirement accounts is critical. What you do with these assets should coordinate with your overall goals for your estate. As a rule, married people name their spouses as the primary beneficiary. But who should be the secondary, contingent beneficiary? And what should a single parent do – especially if the children are still minors? Don’t Leave Money Directly to a Minor Naming a beneficiary to receive the funds outright, rather than in trust, can be a mistake. If the beneficiary is a minor, a conservator may have to be appointed by the court. The conservator will act under court supervision to manage the money for the minor child. The assets may be pulled out of the IRA and taxes paid over a five-year period, reducing the amount available to the child. Your Young Adult May Cash Out that IRA A child who is over 18 may be tempted to take a distribution or even cash out the entire account, accelerating the income taxes due and paying a penalty. This eliminates the opportunity for continued tax-deferred growth and accumulation for the child’s retirement. In addition, the withdrawn amount is available to the beneficiary’s creditors, and may be available to a spouse or a-soon-to-be-ex-spouse. Leaving Money to the Spouse in Your Second Marriage May Disinherit Your Children From Your First Marriage For a person who has children from a previous marriage or relationship, making your new spouse the beneficiary means that he or she can name anyone as the next beneficiary and is under no obligation to follow your wishes or leave anything to your

children. If you want to take care of your spouse during his or her lifetime, and still want what he or she doesn’t use to go to your children, you have to do additional planning. The Solution is a Stand-Alone Retirement Trust A solution to these issues is found in naming a special trust as beneficiary for these tax-deferred accounts. This provides you control over and protection for the funds. The trust must meet specific requirements of the IRS. It’s best to create a trust separate from your revocable living trust. These trusts are often called “stand-alone retirement trusts.” While you are living, the IRA or 401(k) is in your name. After death, the funds are held in the retirement trust. The benefits of naming an IRA Trust as your beneficiary are: • Protection of your retirement funds from creditors, predators, spouses and others who might try to take the funds from the beneficiary or take advantage of the beneficiary. • Provisions of the trust allow your trustee to provide for a special needs beneficiary without jeopardizing government benefits. • Preventing beneficiaries from cashing out or taking larger distributions, which assures the continuation of tax-deferred growth. • Naming successor beneficiaries, thus allowing you to maintain control over who will receive the proceeds if your initial beneficiary should die before the account is fully paid out. National Charity League, Inc., Moon Valley Chapter (NCL, Inc.) began its 20th anniversary celebration at the 5th Annual Chapter Tea on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at the Embassy Suites Hotel Phoenix-Scottsdale. The “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” theme was an elegant affair with beautifully decorated centerpieces made by mother-daughter teams featuring signature Tiffany blue boxes, glitter and pearls. President of the 2015-16 Chapter, Michele Baker, announced that last year’s members had contributed: 6,222 hours of direct service, $7484 in-cash and in-kind donations, while serving 8,145 league hours. The theme of Baker’s year as president of the Moon Valley Chapter was “Enjoying the Journey, A Happy Healthy Chapter.” After all the awards for outstanding service were handed out, Baker introduced Frankie Wheeler as the 2016-17 incoming chair of NCL, Inc..

He found that people who mostly sat and were inactive were more likely gain weight, get diabetes, have heart attacks and develop cancer. The American Journal of Epidemiology reports that a man who sits more than six hours a day has an 18% increased risk of dying from heart disease and a 7.8% increased chance of dying from diabetes compared with someone who sits for three hours or less a day. Only a three hour difference! In 1945, Joseph Pilates published his first book, Return to Life through Contrology documenting his advice on health, posture and breathing. More than 70 years ago, Mr. Pilates saw the effects of poor posture: shallow breathing, backaches, and lack of energy. He developed “Contrology”, a mind-body exercise system (known today as the Pilates Method) as a solution for correcting physical imbalances and improving one’s quality of life. This may seem funny, but the whole time I was driving the Alfa I felt I was living the dream, I felt a little Italian, very confident and very rich. When I returned the car I started to imagine how Cinderella must have felt when her coach turned back in to a pumpkin. The exact next day driving down the same road, no one gave me a second look, beeped their horn or wanted a photo with me. Unlike Cinderella, no prince charming will search to find the auto journalist who lost their Alfa Romeo. Natural Remedies for Pesky Summer Ailments B Y O L I V I A W I N G E R T, C O - O W N E R S O U V I A T E ATM “Summertime, and the living is easy”…..well maybe not quite so easy here in the desert with triple digit temperatures! Sunburn that ruins your day at the lake and bug bites that are getting the better of those balmy summer evenings are just a few of annoyances that are simple seasonal hazards. Instead of reaching for those over-the-counter remedies, many of which with ominous ingredient lists, find relief in your refrigerator and kitchen pantry. Mother Nature has all the answers and provides simple solutions that bring relief when you need it, without harmful side effects. All of the recipes I list here are require only a few ingredients that you can buy at Souvia or a local health food store. Herbal Insect Repellant ½ tsp citronella essential oil ½ tsp eucalyptus essential oil ½ tsp lavender essential oil 4oz distilled witch hazel Mix ingredients in a 4 oz spray bottle. Shake well. have a bad day when it starts like that. The three-year-old is extremely intelligent and has already mastered commands such as sit, down, stay, come and heel and is eager to learn even more. His previous family mentioned that he is actually a bit too smart for his own good and discovered a faulty door long before they did. As any avid adventurer would do, he would take it upon himself to gallivant around the neighborhood ensuring all was in order before returning to the front stoop after his outings. Of course, the preference is that his outings around the home remain in an enclosed backyard. Are You in a Flood Plain?

Several years ago the flood plain maps affecting the Moon Valley area were redrawn. Suddenly my mortgage lender was requiring Flood Insurance where I hadn’t needed it before. I was told that I must secure Flood Insurance or they were going to “force place” insurance and add the premium to my monthly mortgage payment. The amount was significant. I called my insurance agent who proved to be quite helpful. He checked pricing for my home and told me that the “forced placed” insurance was actually less expensive than he could provide. The reason: since the map had been redrawn, there was no effective information about the amount of risk my situation presented, and the only alternative was to charge the highest rate. He suggested a course of action which I followed and within a short period of time found that Flood Insurance was not required at all. His suggestion was that I have my premises surveyed. His reasoning was that if I was in a flood plain, a survey would determine the element of risk and potentially lower the premium, and if I wasn’t, we could dispense with flood insurance completely. If you are in a similar situation, please read on. Here is what I did: • I went to the CoreLogic website at https://www.floodcert.com . For $20.00 they researched the property status and issued a “life of loan” determination. This step is not absolutely necessary, but with it you will know the official stance. In the mortgage business we do this check on every loan. • The FEMA website is www.fema.gov. Here you can familiarize yourself with the agency and somewhere in there they will tell you the action to take. Ultimately, you will find that you have to petition to have your status changed with a “Letter of Map Change” (LOMC). You can call FEMA. They were most helpful. Get their phone number from their website. • You start the process at https://hazards.fema.gov/femaportal/onlinelomc/signin. Establish an account with an Email address and password. Begin the application and load the documents requested as you obtain them. When you are eventually ready you can submit. This is very handy. • They will require an “elevation certificate” (Elevation Form FIRM PANEL). • A copy of your deed. • A copy of the Assessor’s map. • I hired a surveyor. He charged $600, which was less than I had already paid in premiums for the “forced placed” flood insurance. I had the Elevation Certificate the next day. • The Assessor’s map can be had by going to the Maricopa County Assessor’s website at http://mcassessor.maricopa.gov/property/residential-rental-property/. Click on Maps at the top of the page. Insert your address where requested. This is the map I used. • From that website you can also go to the County Recorder’s website, enter your name and every transaction you have ever had within the county will come up.

Choose your most current deed and print it. There is no charge because you don’t need a certified document. • With the information provided, I was able to secure a certificate from FEMA stating that I was not at risk and that flood insurance was not necessary. I sent that to my mortgage lender and I actually got a refund. This potentially could save you hundreds of dollars per month or per year. Also, not being in a flood plain makes your home more saleable; worth more upon resale. Father’s Day SENIOR MOMENTS BY DAN SEAGREN Mother’s Day has come and gone and Father’s Day follows in June. Now and then we see lists of days to honor which are unbelievably numerous. My wife and her siblings after years of separation have lived recently in our home town for about ten years. Now only the brother is left as the sisters moved into another city. His concern, now that he was alone, was if they should continue taking turns placing flowers on the graves. Which brings us to the topic of Special Days, memorials, tending grave sites, regularly or occasionally, unless prohibited, allocation of expenditures, prioritization (who, when, how) among other elements. It is true that some are exceptionally involved in remembering those who have gone on ahead while others are not as involved. Situations can vary considerably with closely knit families and those that have endured disharmony. Distance, both in terms of miles and empathy also enter the equation. It is conceivable that some who are duty bound may also be less concerned than those who had previously paid their respect. My birth mother, who died when I was three years old, and my stepmother are buried thousands of miles apart yet my thoughts are with both at times. Now, after seventy years, I have returned to the city where my birth mother is buried and did visit her grave site. Situations vary so considerably that we must show not only reverence to their memory but also respect for others in their own personal involvement. As I have said more than once how I wish I had asked more questions about my mother. And I wished that my own beloved father would have talked more about her than he did. Commemoration is very important to many including holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, memorials. In addition there are numerous national holidays, world events, religious celebrations and so on that deserve our attention. In looking up commemorative events, I found 27 yearly dates alone for Christian celebrations, 31 Hindu, and fewer for Muslims and Jews. For June alone, many holidays were listed plus unofficial days like April Fools Day, Friday the 13th, S.A.D. (single awareness day) and even a no pants day (first Friday of May). Holidays may be designated by governments, religious institutions, or other groups or organizations set aside by custom or by law allowing individuals to celebrate or commemorate an event or tradition. Now we too can pick and choose hoping that we will not forget to remember.

Operator Error --Google to the Rescue! BY FROST Y KROENING (My how times have changed!) First thing in the morning I turned my phone on, entered my password, and pushed the email button. Up came an urgent message about a serious virus that had inhabited my phone! Rather than push the buttons that message wanted me to use to erase the virus (I knew not to do that), I called my phone company. The technician directed me to not use my phone much until I got it to a store so staff could remove the virus. Several days later (I used another phone during this time) I took my phone to the store nearest me. Staff there couldn’t perform the virus removal while saving my information so they asked me to drive to a store in Scottsdale. I went there and the viruses were removed (I hope) by emptying the cache of sites I had visited. (I didn’t know the phone remembered every site I have visited!) It was an easy fix and I learned how to do it myself. I went home and plugged the phone into my charger. The next morning the phone was dead. I had only 5% power. I was sure I had plugged it into my charger and left it all night as I often do. I headed right back to the store in Scottsdale and had a lovely tuna $3.00 Subway sandwich in the store next door until the store opened at 10 a.m. They plugged my phone into a charger and it chugged along passing all of the tests the technician could perform. I left wondering what in the world happened! I arrived home and checked to see if the phone charger was plugged into the special socket our remodeler made for us in the laundry room. My golly! It wasn’t even plugged in. The technician had been able to read out exactly when my phone had been charged up for some days back. He said that it hadn’t been charged for 44 hours. I knew I had it plugged in when I talked with a friend so it wouldn’t run out of power. BUT, it really wasn’t plugged in all that time! So....OPERATOR ERROR #1. Solution: plug in the charger to the wall socket AND the phone! During the time I couldn’t use my smart phone I learned a few other lessons. I love that smart phone...well, most of its features. I love the navigation system...”Ok Google. Navigate to...” And she navigates me to my destination without my having to look at the screen! I love being able to get my email, read books, and search the web. (I can also search the web by verbal commands.) I love being able to received texts and easily play my verbal phone messages. I do NOT love the sound system as I always have to put the phone on speaker-phone so people, including everyone else within earshot, can hear me. I love being able to call my husband several times a day. And, I love the magical capability of speaking with our nieces whether they are in Vermont, Wisconsin, California, or Colorado! No extra charge! So, that time without my phone sent me into doing a finely-tuned gratitude list. And into memories of the times back when we had to find telephone booths to connect with loved ones. We also used snail mail. I still believe in snail mail and use it every day, too. Communication is essential but I also relaxed into the quiet for a time out. It is all good. And I am grateful as well as chagrined...see? I asked Google how to spell chagrined. I was spelling it with an “s”! I knew it wasn’t right with an “s.” Google had the answer in a flash!
