TRAPPED IN MOON VALLEY LET TER FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the Roaring Twenties, in the 20th Century, it’s so very exciting! A new decade… but let’s look back at what the 20’s stood for in the 1900’s, and the many similarities after 100 years.

It was a period of economic prosperity, a time of social, artistic and cultural dynamism, and women were known as “flappers”, and granted the right to vote! The president Warren G. Harding “brought back normalcy” and there was a hyper-emotional patriotism going on. Autos, telephones, movies, radio and many new electrical appliances were being installed. Advertising and endorsements promoted by big sport heroes and movie stars moved market share and consumer demand was underway.

Wow, after 100 years, many of the same things are still or continuing to happen, maybe in a little different modality, a different style, but so similar. Autos, telephones, movies are so sleek high tech, as well as new and improved electrical appliances are being installed daily. Advertising is driven in many markets by sport heroes, music moguls and movie stars. As for the president, let’s just leave that alone… but one thing for sure is the American Patriotism is stronger than ever, and seen across the nation in every city and town, with the American flag flying high.

What’s old is new again, such a weird saying, but when you really think about all the changes, and then what is really the same: what we still do and what we still say, it is very uncanny.

As we approach this new decade, I am so excited to reenact, the many speakeasy’s, shimmy dresses, jazz music, feathers in our hair, and long sleek black gloves.

I plan to learn the Charleston, drink home-made whiskey and swear like a sailor! Happy New Year.

Ticktocker Day

BY SAD IE B ENAV ID E Z It is a gorgeous sunny afternoon at Moon Valley Park and the laughter of girls rings out for all to hear. Is it a sports event or a birthday party? It’s actually the National Charity League Inc. (NCL) Moon Valley Chapter’s annual Ticktocker Day. What is a Ticktocker? It’s the term for a daughter in this national mother-daughter community-service organization. NCL encourages Ticktockers to be independent and have their own responsibilities and jobs within the chapter, growing valuable leadership skills in the process.

One of those jobs is organizing Ticktocker Day, a fun event where the chapter’s Ticktockers spend the afternoon together participating in activities that can be messy, silly and an amazing bonding time for all.

Color Wars were a big hit at this year’s Ticktocker Day. Girls were divided into small groups by grade level and given squirt bottles full of colored powder.

When the leader said go, everyone squirted color at each other! Girls were covered in huge amounts of different colors all at once, and it was every girl for herself.

Even though it got very messy, it was a super fun activity that helped strengthen friendships within and across all six grade levels.

On a more serious, but very important note was the card-making workshop. Each girl hand-crafted beautiful cards which will be sent to breast cancer patients served by one of our philanthropies, “Don’t Be A Chump, Check For A Lump.” The cards are very meaningful to those who are struggling with breast cancer, giving each recipient a bit of light during a challenging period of their life.

This supports a major goal of the NCL Moon Valley Chapter: to make a positive impact in the lives of as many people as possible.

After the cards were finished and the games were over, the president of our class led a group meeting to give the event planners feedback on how the girls felt the day went. The meeting also gave the Ticktocker officers a chance to explain the duties of their leadership positions, helping the other Ticktockers select a leadership role to apply for in the coming year. Overall, this event delivered a great bonding time for everyone while also providing a chance to give back to others in need.

NCL, Inc. is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong mother-daughter relationships through community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. DESIGNER IN RESIDENCE FINALISTS: 13 Local Fashion Brands Selected as Finalists in the 2020 AZ Apparel Foundation Designer in Residence Accelerator Program The AZ Apparel Foundation announces the 13 brands chosen as finalists for its prestigious Designer in Residence Accelerator program.

Out of nearly 50 applicants, 13 finalists were chosen by a distinguished panel of judges comprised of professionals from related industries including fashion, finance, marketing, business, beauty, film, and more. Finalists will be interviewed by the AAF Board of Directors on January 8, 2020. Six winners will be selected from this finalist talent pool for 2020, which is double the number of recipients awarded in 2019. The winners of the AZ Apparel Foundation Designer in Residence Accelerator Scholarship will be announced on January 13, 2020.

This scholarship provides a six-month training program and resources to accelerate the brands of six Arizona-based, fashion-design entrepreneurs. The finalists were chosen for their potential to build a scalable niche brand in Arizona.

A 501(c)3 nonprofit, the AZ Apparel Foundation raises funds to provide these emerging businesses, all of the tools necessary for success as well as guidance from industry experts and professionals – at no cost to the winners. Each award is valued at over $18,500. The AZ Apparel Foundation has already successfully supported ten scholarship winners, including a brand offering women’s under-garments in all skin tones, a Native American graphic art brand that brings light to indigineous issues, and a modest evening wear collection to name a few.

Rookie Mom: What’s your parent-related 2020 goal?

B Y B R I G H I D C O N S TA B L E I’m writing this just after rocking my 2-year-old daughter to sleep.

It’s 8:12 p.m. and it took about an hour, only because we’re trying this new sleep routine.

Admittedly, this routine should have happened a while ago. My daughter, Brynn, turns 3 next month and still needs a paci, cuppy of milk, and either me or my husband to rock her to sleep before tucking her into bed.

Another toddler mom friend recently said, “Brighid, this needs to change. She should be falling asleep directly in her bed and without your help.” And I felt that, but part of me mourned for the idea.

Brynn is my first child, and my husband and I do not know if we’ll have another one. Therefore, it seems like I’m saying goodbye to her babyhood if I stop having her close to me as she falls asleep.

But, she isn’t a baby anymore. And I shouldn’t be rocking her to sleep on a regular basis, no matter how much I want to.

I find that with resolutions, that it’s much more effective to run with goals.

So with the spirit of a fresh month in the new year in mind, my “Rookie Mom Goal” is for my daughter to sleep in her bed by herself without the direct help of her parents. The paci also needs to begin making a few Irish exits.

Hey, I know this year is going to be a tough one for me with Brynn. Like I mentioned, she’s turning 3, will be fully potty trained (still scared of going No. 2), and is attending the preschool on campus at my school.

My baby is growing up. She’s a true child and her growth is still taking me by surprise every day. It’s a cliche for a reason; it’s true.

As parents, we all have goals or milestones we want our children to reach.

Instead of getting nit-picking at accomplishing every goal, I’m just going to find the joy in reaching this major milestone in 2020: My daughter will be able to sleep by herself in her very own bed!

Here’s a gold star for this mom. Or, in another year at least.

Winter Indoor Swim Lessons Make a Big Splash at Hubbard Family Swim School B Y L I L A B A LT M A N

Even though it’s January and the weather outside is cold, inside at the Hubbard Family Swim School in Phoenix, the temperature of the heated, indoor swimming pools is 90 degrees all winter long.

“The winter and spring months are a great time to enroll children in swim lessons because it gets them prepared and ready for safer swimming this summer when they’ll want to spend a lot of time swimming outdoors with their family and friends,” says Bob Hubbard, co-owner of the Hubbard Family Swim School. “Swim lessons during the winter are not only terrific exercise and a lot of fun, but we also want to make sure that children learn how to swim and are always safer around water. Our basic philosophy is this: Children everywhere must learn how to swim. Learning to swim should not be an option.”

Children who learn how to swim also demonstrate more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than other children, according to world-leading research led by Griffith University in Australia. Their 2013 findings of a four-year study indicate that swimming children have an advantage when starting school.

Swimming children scored significantly better than the normal population on a number of measures that are really important for their transition to school - their cognitive development, language development, and their physical development. The study showed that children’s fine motor skills and overall coordination were more developed as a result of taking swim lessons and it showed that children who start lessons early were more socially and emotionally ready to start school.

In 2019, the American Academy of Pediatrics formally stated that they now recommend that children as young as 1 year old get enrolled in formal swim lessons.

Hubbard Family Swim School offers lessons to children 8 weeks to 12 years of age. There are even FREE “baby splash” swim classes for babies 8 weeks to 5 months of age. Parent participation in the water is required. These fun-filled, 30-minute water acclimation classes give parents or caregivers a chance to learn excellent tips on how to enjoy tub time at home with baby and also learn how to prepare baby for swim lessons. The baby splash classes are free but there is a $25 registration fee.

The truth is, watching your child eventually take his first swim strokes across the pool will be just as exciting and memorable as when you watched him take his first walking steps across the floor. Enrolling in swim lessons with your baby or toddler may also prove to be one of the most enjoyable, special bonding experiences the two of you will ever experience together.

Keeping OUr New Year’s Resolutions B Y L I B B Y B A N K S , P L L C , E S TAT E P L A N N I N G By the time you read this, I’m sure some of my New Year’s resolutions will have already gone by the wayside! Or maybe not. This year, I did some research to find out what the experts say would help me succeed in achieving my goals.

Here are a few of the tips I thought were helpful. For this article I not only talk about my own goals, but also apply these principles to the goal of getting an estate plan in place.

Be specific. A friend in my networking group often says, “be specific to be terrific.” If you set a goal that is too vague, how do you even know when you’ve met the goal? I found myself saying I wanted to be healthier, but I hadn’t defined what that means. Now, I’ll go back to that goal to itemize some things I need to do to be healthy, like eating more vegetables – oops, or maybe even more specifically, add three more servings of vegetables per day to my diet.

For estate planning, the big goal is having a will or trust in place. Breaking it down, a specific goal may be to call and make an appointment to speak with an attorney or buy a book on estate planning and read it.

Write it down or put it on the “to do” list. We’ve all heard that written goals have more power and are more likely to come to fruition. It occurred to me also that I need to put the steps to my goal on my to do list or make them part of my routine. To eat more vegetables, it is a must for me to put more vegetables on my grocery list and get to the store to buy them. You can’t eat what’s not in the refrigerator. For estate planning, put on your list that you need to call an attorney, or put a reminder note on your computer or phone that before you start playing that game, you need to do some research on estate planning and who to call for help.

Pick a start date or make time for your goal. We are all so busy. My goal of getting healthier needs to include exercise, but it is always hard to fit that into my schedule. I looked at my calendar and found the best times for me to go and exercise. This year, I have a regular appointment at the gym to work on building muscle to stay strong as I grow older. Moving forward on your estate plan will take time, but maybe not as much as you think. Getting that appointment to discuss it with your spouse, or even better to see an attorney, is a great first step.

Anticipate the obstacles. My husband’s birthday is in January, and that usually means a full weekend of celebrating with good food and wine. I need to anticipate that and plan ahead, maybe making some favorite vegetable dishes, and buying a very small cake that’s mostly for him. Getting my workout in on Friday instead of Saturday might also keep me on track. My clients often face obstacles in estate planning. For parents with young children, finding a guardian to name can be a near impossible task. For my clients with young adults, they aren’t sure whether to name them as executors quite yet, and if not, who they want to name. Know that all of these issues can be worked through and having an experienced attorney who has addressed these same issues with other clients can really help. Don’t let your uncertainty waylay your planning. The right answer might be lurking around the corner.

Put a deadline on the calendar and pick up the phone on or before that day.

Is Excercising before Breakfast Best?

BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER, CMT DC You may think you need to fuel up with a good breakfast before doing any physical activity first thing in the morning, but research suggests doing the opposite may actually be beneficial from a health perspective.

For example, research summarized in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism suggests people who exercise first and then eat breakfast have better control over their blood sugar levels and burn more fat compared to people who eat first and then exercise. The six-week study involved overweight / obese adult men assigned to one of three groups for comparison. One group ate breakfast first and then exercised; the second group exercised first and then ate breakfast; and the third group made no lifestyle changes.

Results showed that exercising first and then ate breakfast positively impacted lipid and insulin characteristics compared to doing the opposite. Specifically, exercising first increased fat utilization (i.e., burned more fat) and re-

duced the insulin response to eating – both important consequences for overweight individuals who may also be experiencing related blood sugar / insulin issues that could eventually manifest as diabetes.

Interestingly, both groups lost a similar amount of weight and increased their fitness levels similarly during the study period. However, as stated, fat and blood sugar utilization were markedly increased merely by participating in exercise before breakfast, during the “fasting state” between bedtime and the first meal of the day.

New Year’s Resolution: Fix, Repair & Recycle B Y F R O S T Y K R O E N I N G My husband has a favorite belt to wear with jeans. It has an intricate design. The buckle is plain brass. The problem is that the leather where the holes are is wearing thin. So, we have been looking for a solution.

Driving down 7th Street I saw a sign near Coral Gables Road regarding shoe repair. “We Repair All Leather Goods.” My brain took its time, but eventually connected “leather” with “belt” with “MVP Shoe Repair.” This morning I drove there are talked with Eddie, an employee. He thought that a piece of reinforcing leather could be added to the inside of the belt. He agreed that the belt was made of fine leather and was of good design. The rest of the belt is in good shape.

The whole idea of fixing beloved items seems to have disappeared. People throw clothing and other belongings away and buy new. But, we of the 1930s and 1940s birthdays often prefer to fix our things. That is why I was so happy to know about Mvp. It turns out this tiny shop carried the shoe shine products we use. And, they have a wide variety of other shoe and foot care products. They also can redo zippers, sliders, and handles. They polish and condition leather goods. This shop has watch batteries and employees can install them.

We are blessed to have most of the services and products we use daily right here in Moon Valley or not far away. Eddie was very gracious to me and we look forward to getting the belt back so it can be used for many more years. And we are recycling and buying recycled goods wherever possible to save Earth’s resources.

Especially at this time of the year, as a mortgage professional, I get numerous solicitations to join in webinars about planning for the new year.

My company, other lenders, mortgage insurance companies, and so on, all want us to get our act together for the ensuing year. It makes sense because it means more business for them if we are organized.

But it is great advice for all of us to sit down and spend some time planning out the new year. The other day I received the January issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. Smack dab in the middle was an ad from T. Rowe Price entitled “Your 2020 Plan.” I’m not touting T. Rowe Price but their plan was simple and cogent. See my summary below of “A monthly guide from T. Rowe Price.”

January – Set your intentions Prioritize your goals – decide what is important and what can wait Draft a 2020 budget – use last year’s income and out go as a guide Make your 2020 IRA contribution – not really due until April, 2021, but consider the extra earnings February – Prepare for tax time Get organized, file your taxes, invest your tax return March – Simplify your investments Revisit your old 401(k) – look at tax benefits, investment choices, and costs Streamline holdings – Asset allocations portfolios keep you synchronized Automate investing – a set contribution each month makes the most sense April – Improve your financial standing Check your credit reports (free from each bureau), review your debt (pay high interest debts first), and make your 2019 IRA contribution if you haven’t already (due by April 15th) May - Invest in education Open a 529 account, engage your children in activities to make them financially savvy, educate yourself about financial topics June – Do a midyear checkup Check your budget, review your asset allocation, fund your emergency account July – Commit to your financial health Be aware of “financial creep” – that is spending more on discretionary things as your income increases Practice mindful spending – waiting a preset number of days to buy “impulse” items determines how much do you really want them August – Reassess your choices Evaluate your insurance coverages, and review your memberships September – Organize and give back Organize important documents and store them in logical places, make charitable contributions and donations October – be vigilant with cybersecurity Protect your passwords, use multifactor authentication November – Focus on family matters Talk with adult children about money, update your estate plan December – Prioritize your retirement Prepare for retirement (goal is to save at least 15% of salary across retirement accounts), take your Required Minimum Distributions (if you are 70 ½ or older) This is a simplistic but thorough approach to getting organized for the year. My suggestion is making a copy and put it where you will see it regularly.

Great food for thought at the beginning of each month.

BTW – This is a great time to refinance your mortgage and maybe consider a 15-year mortgage. Rates are stellar.

If you have decided to finally remodel the kitchen, bathroom or add that new room, there are a few things you need to know. Don’t go into the process without doing your homework. Find a company that is licensed, bonded and insured. Make sure they specialize in the area you need. Check them out through the registrar of contractors and take a look at their website. Schedule a first visit and make sure you are compatible. Most companies will offer you a meeting and a free estimate.

Remember, if you are not comfortable with them don’t do business.

You need to hire a company that will listen to you and use your ideas. Your contractor should welcome your opinion. After all, you will be living there not the contractor. Don’t be pushed into making rash decisions. When you are done with your remodel you want to say “Wow, this is what I wanted”. You should never finish the process and wish you had made different decisions. The professional company you hire should guide you down the correct path.

Some people will make decisions based on what they think others will like if they sell their home in a few years. Most people will make changes to your design no matter what selections are made. If you are going to stay in the home, there should be a cost of enjoyment.

Your professional designer/contractor should make sure the kitchen, bathroom or addition functions properly for you and your family. FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION. Make sure you purchase quality materials. Cheap products never last very long and can ruin a beautiful remodel. You get what you pay for. Never remodel your home without a permit if one is required. If a contractor does not want to get a permit when one is required, WALK AWAY. A little homework will go a long way to making sure you are getting a quality project.

Let’s take a break from our color conversations and contemplate indoor air quality. During the past few decades there has been much ado about the rise of asthma and various allergies. These issues also began around the time that “sick building” syndrome and the energy crisis came to a head in the 1970’s. Over the course of the years, these have been attributed to cleaning chemicals, chemicals in building materials and lack of fresh air.

But I have been increasingly suspect of another factor: the discontinuation of spring and fall cleaning. When I was very young, it was the custom to tear the house apart for spring and fall cleaning. Mothers would turn into whirlwind-cleaning-maniacs and we kids knew to get out of the way lest we be asked to do something to help)!

Every closet and drawer was emptied, vacuumed and scrubbed.

Each item of clothing was given a good shake-out, outdoors, before it was returned to its place; every other item was dusted and/or polished; baseboards were scrubbed; area rugs were taken outside and beaten (or sent out for cleaning). Kitchens and bathrooms were given the “toothbrush in the corners” cleaning; the contents of every cabinet were emptied, evaluated, culled and re-organized. Chandeliers and light fixtures were taken apart and cleaned; cushions removed from furniture, beaten and vacuumed. All of the windows were opened to let the rooms “breathe” and those windows (and window coverings) were washed or dry-cleaned. Yes, it was a very serious undertaking that lasted up to two weeks. But when it was finished the house, and everything in it was immaculate.

With the end of the year approaching, it might be a good idea to contemplate some deep cleaning because, after all, cleanliness is next to Godliness—or so they say!

A New Year Resolution: Looking for Chances to Serve

It’s that time of year… challenging ourselves to improve personally and professionally by making “resolutions” to fulfill in the next 365 days. After reviewing several lists online, the most common resolutions typically include: Exercise more Spend more time with family Learn a new skill Lose weight Travel more Improve a relationship Quit smoking (or any other harmful habit) Take up a new hobby Become more organized Better manage and minimize stress It doesn’t seem to make any top 10 resolution lists, but one to consider adding for 2020 is to find opportunities to serve. This is not about improving one’s tennis game. It’s about being intentional with using time and talents to help others with no expectation of reciprocation.

Many workplaces now seek out opportunities for their teams to volunteer on an individual basis or as a group. While there is no financial reward for these services, for many people, there is an intangible sense of gratification that comes from selfless giving.

As an example, members of the team at our office served in the following areas in 2019: oral health screenings for the Special Olympics, oral hygiene instructions for members of the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Phoenix, no-cost dental care during the Mission of Mercy in both Phoenix and Flagstaff, dental services at St. Vincent de Paul, complementary custom mouth guards to local high school football players and oral hygiene presentations to grade schools in our communities.

Whether it is assisting at the local food bank, volunteering at your place of worship or helping a homebound neighbor, opportunities to serve are everywhere around us. Consider adding volunteer more to your goals for the coming year. It will make a welcome addition to any 2020 resolution list.

From camp to Career: A Love Letter to Civitan

BY HANA RUZSA My journey with Civitan Foundation Inc. started with a posting on an ASU job board for current students.

The listing read “Graphic Designer with InDesign Experience to Start Newspaper with Adults with Developmental Disabilities.” I HAD to learn more.

Only a few years earlier, I gave birth to my first child, Ricky.

Nothing was alerting during my pregnancy until close to the very end, and only until after my delivery did I learn my little boy would have some struggles growing up. He has been diagnosed with a very rare chromosomal disorder called Koolen de Vries Syndrome. To give and myself the best future possible, I went back to school to study graphic design and that is when my worlds collided.

Here was an opportunity for me a use my design skills.

Here was an opportunity to teach, which is something I have always loved doing. Here was an opportunity for me to impact the lives of folks in the disability community, a community my son and I belong to. This was the chance for a better future, for everyone involved.

From a northern accessible camp that started in 1968, to Civitan Village, a massive learning campus that opened in 2013, Civitan Foundation has been at the forefront of offering exceptional services for exceptional people. Going beyond traditional learning and employment, Civitan truly fosters the skillsets of each of their unique members and is always introducing programming to diversify their education and job training.

At Civitan, my students were learning film, photography, branding and more. Other members at Civitan were making incredible works of art, mural installations, pet portraits (you better believe I ordered one!) and some of the best food I have ever tasted. Yes, Civitan even caters and has partnerships with local restaurants like 32 Shea to create and

deliver delectable items. When my best friend got married this October, I told her right away she had to hire Civitan for her catering, and boy did they deliver an amazing meal. My husband said the food took him back to his grandmother’s cooking while visiting her in Mexico.

During the summer months, Civitan Foundation partners with several sites in the Phoenix metro area and Williams, Arizona, to provide more than 17,000 healthy meals, based on USDA nutrition guidelines. Supervised members of Civitan’s culinary program prepare and deliver the food to locations in north Phoenix. Meals served in Williams are prepared at Camp Civitan.

Robert is a Civitan member who works several days a week at Flerish, Civitan’s boutique thrift shop located on Cave Creek Rd, north of Cactus. He enjoys being a vital help to customers, “I help them carry their stuff out and greet people and make their day.

I like to see their smiles.” Robert receives on the job training in customer service, inventory management, and retail setups, all while earning a paycheck.

Currently, my Ricky benefits from Civitan’s respite and habilitation services, where they’re making sure my little boy is successful with independent living techniques that I took for granted before my son was born. Without Civitan, I do not know what I would do. I have so much respect for their providers, I love their members, and I know when Ricky is older, I have a fantastic place to enroll him for his future success.

All-Terrain Mobility Chair Will Open Possibilities For Campers

By Bo Larsen Camp Civitan in Williams, Arizona was established to provide children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to experience the unique joy of summer camp – regardless of ability level. By opening its doors, Camp Civitan created one of the first year-round, fully accessible camping experiences in Arizona that, to this day, continues to set the standard for lifelong adventures for children and adults with disabilities.

Founded in 1968, Camp Civitan is a 15-acre wheelchair accessible facility that offers campers a variety of enriching and fun experiences that promote positive self-esteem, teamwork, socialization, and healthy activities. But, what if there is a trail or activity where a typical wheelchair can’t easily navigate? Thanks to Terrain Hopper USA of Tempe, Camp Civitan has an opportunity to receive an all-terrain motorized wheelchair. Through a matching grant opportunity, Civitan Foundation must raise $12,500 and Terrain Hopper USA will match the funds and build this unique electrically powered off-road mobility vehicle.

The Terrain Hopper provides users with the ability to participate in outdoor activities with their friends and family. NO Boring Meetings

H U L L Boys Team Charity (BTC) is a volunteer service organization dedicated to developing an altruistic spirit in young men through active participation by parents and sons in philanthropic projects in their communities. Most of our functions involve volunteerism, as we help with several worthwhile organizations around our community. We also hold several meetings for our members each year.

These team meetings focus on unique opportunities and FUN. Here are a few amazing meetings that have taken place in the past 12 months: Last December our boys were treated to a private tour of the University of Phoenix Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals. This incredible tour gave us the backstage experience, walking through the team locker room, VIP suites and areas of the stadium that are unavailable to the general public.

In April the meeting was held at Castles & Coasters and involved 18 holes of miniature golf and unlimited rides.

August found the boys meeting at the Arizona Archery Club. They were provided lessons and an opportunity to practice what they learned in an in-door target range.

In Oct the BTC members were treated to a private tour of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Midwestern University conducted by the Dean. We walked the entire campus and viewed animals of all sizes, from large farm animals to a dog undergoing physical therapy on an underwater treadmill. The boys got to meet a few of the veterinary students and watch them try to birth a life-size, rubber calf.

In 2020 we look forward to an exclusive tour of the FBI Gun Vault.

BTC helps create a desire for service in our young men while also demonstrating that meetings can be both fun and informative. BY BRET ALDIERI, MVNA PRESIDENT Happy New Year – wow it’s 2020! This is the time to both reflect on the past year and look ahead to what each of us can do to make it a better year. Let’s all strive to improve every year, with our family and in our community.

MVNA Annual meeting is scheduled for Wed, January 8th at the Moon Valley Country Club. The official meeting starts at 7:00 PM, and will be preceded by a cash bar Happy Hour starting at 6:00PM. All residents of Moon Valley are invited to attend. We expect to have city Councilwoman Deb Stark and representatives of the Phoenix Police Department in attendance for short presentations and community questions. We will also make our G.A.I.N. donation to The 100 Club. Please plan to join us!

As I look back on the past year – we had many good things happen, but still have items to address.

I have decided to continue my service on the MVNA board of directors in 2020. Key items for 2020 are to build an improved relationship with MVCC, identify key community needs, continue our excellent partnership with the City of Phoenix, and to identify ways to fund improvement projects. We could use some legal help in our desire to convert MVNA to a 503(c)(3) non-profit organization. We will also strive to improve our communications.

We were successful in getting the City to pave some of our key roadways – Greenway, Coral Gables, Thunderbird; but also, still need 7th Street to be re-paved (now that it’s fully open over the mountain).

The water pipe project was finally fully completed now delivering more affordable water to the three golf courses (Moon Valley, The Pointe and Cave Creek). We have ideas to share with CBONs and MVCC on how we might better partner to address community concerns.

MVNA updated our website to give residents an on-line payment option for MVNA annual dues and security fee. We also held yard sale events, another successful G.A.I.N. event and supported the July fireworks display. Our home decorating bus tour was fun with more than 50 homes reviewed and 30 awards posted. Our Food Drive got off to a strong start with the hope we beat last year’s results with over 2,000 pounds of food donated to the Desert Mission Food Bank.

So, it’s been a very busy and fruitful 2019; with a better 2020 having already arrived. Thanks to our departing board members for your service to our community. WESD News: Jumpstart, Teacher Interviews

BY LEON, TRY ME BICYCLE SHOP It is not angry cyclists. But is a type of bike and bicycle race. These bikes differ from road, mountain, and gravel bikes. More clearance between tire frame and fork. Mud and debris can lock a wheel up causing slow going or worse. Tires are 700c x 35 millimeter with a aggressive tread.

Bikes are very light so they can be carried through sand, mud, water, and steep sections. Riders look pretty muddy by the end of the race. Cyclo cross races are short 30 minutes or so. Moutain bike racing seem more popular here. Guess it’s great to have moutains close.

Musicians invited to audition for ProMusica Arizona Chorale and Orchestra

Is it your New Year’s Resolution to be a concert musician? Well now is your chance. ProMusica Arizona invites professional and community singers and instrumentalists to audition for the Chorale and Orchestra for the second half of the performance season.

The 2019-20 season marks ProMusica Arizona’s 17th performance year. ProMusica Arizona ensembles perform a wide variety of repertoire from classical to popular, including major works and concert versions of musicals. Performances often include visual elements to enhance the concert experience. The multi-generational Chorale and Orchestra consists of volunteer community members, supplemented with professional musicians as needed. Ensemble members are encouraged to audition for solo parts and roles.

ProMusica Arizona Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Patti Graetz, who has more than 30 years of conducting and performing experience, will be assisted by professionals mentoring community musicians in a challenging but supportive environment. Community musicians will perform alongside professionals in concerts throughout the season.
