Sunnsyslope Future Business Leaders of America

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is an organization that helps high school students prepare for careers in business through academic competitions, leadership development, and educational programs. Each year, the members of FBLA at Sunnyslope High School, located in central Phoenix, participate in three extensive chapter projects: the American Enterprise, Community Service, and Partnership with Business Projects. Through these projects, students work together to develop vital skills by communicating with business leaders, volunteering, and event planning. At the State Leadership Conference in April, each project team will submit a 15-page report and a 10-minute presentation with the goal of advancing to the National Leadership Conference in July. The American Enterprise Project aims to educate the community about one facet of the American Enterprise System.

This year, Sunnyslope FBLA chose the pillar of entrepreneurship to emphasize the value of creating and managing a business. Students worked closely with the AZ Children’s Business Fair to organize a fair where children sell their own products and services. Sunnyslope FBLA members worked together to inspire young children to develop as entrepreneurs by teaching them how to run a business. Furthermore, the Community Service Project team partnered

with Feed My Starving Children, a non-profit organization that coordinates the packaging of food for people in developing nations, to take a stance on world hunger. Sunnyslope FBLA members researched and discovered they could host their own food-packing event (MobilePack) at their Sunnyslope campus. In order to host this event, their chapter needs to raise $26,000 to fund the ingredients needed to pack the meals on the day of the event. Over 500 volunteers packed over 108,000 meals at the Sunnyslope MobilePack! Help us come together as a community for one cause; feeding starving children across the world. Finally, those managing the Partnership with Business Project are collaborating with Men’s Wearhouse, the well-known retail clothing company, to develop exclusive promotions and educate students about the vast number of career opportunities within Men’s Wearhouse. Throughout the project, students will have one-on-one training opportunities with a Customer Service Representative. Thank you

Just a simple Thank You, is the most under-appreciated and under-used phrase on the planet. It is truly the most appropriate in nearly any situation and is a better response than most of the things we say. Not only should we say it, but know how to receive it.

How many times does some give you a compliment and you respond with: “oh this old thing” We so often dismiss the statement, shrug it off , and deflect the praise of a genuine compliment. If a person is nice enough to share and say something, revel in the words, acknowledge and enjoy the moment. Honestly there is something empowering about fully accepting a compliment, own it and let the weight of a compliment sink in and become yours. When you deflect praise, you can’t really own it. When you just say “Thank You,” you let the weight of the compliment sink in and become yours. Saying “Thank You” gives your mind permission to be built up by the compliments you receive.

Thank you, can be used in so many situations, although many times feeling awkward, not knowing what to say is the best thing to say, just being present and thanking people can be so meaningful.

When someone gives you unsolicited advice, comments on something you did or may not have done perfectly, finding the most appropriate response can be gut wrenching, neutralize the power of their statement, with a simple Thank you!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you… you really cannot go wrong, worried about too much gratitude? I may even go a step further, consider a card, yes the old fashion ones you find at the store, buy a book of stamps and just make it a point to say Thank you, more often. rapp

Rookie Mom: unloveable me loves you B Y B R I G H I D C O N S TA B L E On Wednesday, January 8, my fifth nephew was born. My sister-in-law posted a picture of herself and my husband as she went through labor, my brother’s eyes unbearably worn and very much jilted.

The birthing process is changing a lot nowadays. Where we used to ask how the baby is doing, we’re now asking how the mother is. And that is certainly such a phenomenal and much-needed change. Yet, I can’t help but think that our partners have that little-heard-of end as well.

My birthing process was just what I envisioned and I’m entirely grateful for that process. However, afterwards everything fell down. I had postpartum psychosis followed by an extremely long stint of postpartum depression.

Closely after, I was diagnosed with bipolar and have been managing it for two years now.

For this reason, my husband is treading rather lightly on the idea of having another kid. And I can’t blame him. Part of his energy is focused on me managing my personal health so that our family can be a content and successful one.

But for the past 6 years of our marriage and 9 years together, he’s been my roots. He’s loved me when I was not very loveable. He appreciates my vulnerability and meets me all the way there. He love is as it is; there are no expectations, no agendas, feelings and logic come and go.

Through the ups-and-downs of life, the love that my husband has shown me, is one to help me succeed in contentment. It’s where he’s measuring the outcome of what will make our lives secure.

I can’t fault this and I’m sure that our partners get a not-sospotlighted reputations for being the roots to their p a r t n e r ’s security and well-being.

This Valentine’s Day won’t be a romantic one for us. Instead, it’s a celebration of getting through the hard times together, which, let’s face it, is always a phase. Even the happy ones.

So here’s to our partners who don’t often get the recognition they need, through our small and everyday actions to express our secure “I love you.”

And if you already didn’t know, I love you very deeply, Adam Constable.

Fulfilling Basic Needs & So much More

BY ALEXA T YMKIW How many high school freshman girls voluntarily spend time bonding with their mom? How many use their free time volunteering at different charities?

Probably not too many. The National Charity League, Inc. (NCL, Inc.) Moon Valley Chapter is a great way to do both. Plus, you get to know the other girls in your NCL grade level class while you are doing it.

In my NCL journey so far, I have enjoyed participating in many different philanthropies and have gotten to serve a variety of different needs, helping me to find the areas I find most fulfilling. This year, my favorite philanthropy event was The Salvation Army Thanksgiving goody bag stuffing. Each year, The Salvation Army provides Thanksgiving dinners to several hundred homeless people.

To help The Salvation Army prepare for this event, we packed goody bags for the people in need who would be receiving their dinners. We stuffed items such as socks, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste in the bags. Hygiene products such as these are desperately needed. One of the representatives from The Salvation Army told us how excited everyone gets when they are given the bags. This made me realize how lucky I am after hearing how excited they get over basic hygiene products. Another volunteer said, “This charity made me realize I shouldn’t even take the littlest things for granted.”

This event was so humbling. It made me and many others volunteering realize how fortunate we are to not have to worry about basic needs. I also had a great time with the other volunteers as everyone was very friendly and happy to be there. I know I’ll be doing this again next year!

NCL, Inc. is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong mother-daughter relationships through community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. Planing for those you love B Y L I B B Y B A N K S , P L L C , E S TAT E P L A N N I N G In February, our thoughts turn to those we love and how to let them know it on Valentine’s Day. We want to be sure they know just how dear they are to us.

One way to show you care is to get a Will or Trust in place. A proper estate plan makes it so much easier on those you love both if you become incapacitated and when you are no longer here. Without a cohesive, thoughtful estate plan, you may leave a gigantic mess. Your family may have to expend a large sum of money and lots of time and effort to clean it up. Worse, your family may end up fighting.

Time after time when I handled family estate fights, clients said they would never speak to their siblings or stepchildren or stepparent again, or lamented that the messy estate issues were breaking the family apart. I value family highly, and these cases broke my heart. I went into estate planning to help clients avoid these messy fights.

A proper estate plan shows your love by easing the burden of administering your estate and eliminating or minimizing potential fights. When there’s no fight, it’s much easier for your loved ones to love and support each other during the difficult time of your incapacity or death. Here are some big mistakes that you should avoid: Not having a plan: This seems obvious, but it is the number one mistake made by hundreds of thousands of people in Arizona. If you don’t have a plan, don’t worry.

The State of Arizona has one for you. The legislature put it together for us to follow, but it may not be what you want. My best advice is to put your own plan in place instead. Now, who exactly needs an estate plan? Well, if you have children (minors or adults), you need a plan. If you own a home, you need a plan. Whether your situation is simple or complicated, you need a plan tailored to you that will save your family heartache and money when you’re gone.

Not having a plan leaves your heirs to fight about who’s in charge, who’s going to front attorney’s fees and funeral expenses and who’s going to do the work of wrapping up your estate. A simple plan may be all. Having a plan helps ensure make sure your children will still be speaking to each other when the work on your estate is complete.

Putting a do-it-yourself plan in place or using a non-expert for your plan: Sometimes we need to call in the experts. We simply don’t know what we don’t know.

Would you do your own major surgery? No! Clearly, you would go to a reputable surgeon who specializes in the area. An attorney who focuses on estate planning knows the ins and outs of the law, the language you need to use, and things you may want to put in your estate plan that you don’t even know about. If you do a plan yourself, you may make a serious mistake, and when your family finds out, it will be too late to fix it.

Moon Valley Is Invaded by Romance B Y C AT H Y M C D AV I D It’s February which, of course, means Valentine’s Day. Our favorite holiday for lovers. A time when people show that special someone the depths of their affection by giving them a token (card, candy, flowers), taking them out for a nice dinner, or even making a grand gesture like popping the question.

Because I write romance books, I’m often assumed to be an expert on the subject of romance. I tend to think of myself as a relationship expert, though a student in the study of relationships is more accurate. With each book I write, I spend considerable time and effort bringing a couple together and giving them all kinds of great reasons to fall in love. But just to keep things interesting, I simultaneously put a whole bunch of obstacles in their path—enough to make a future relationship nearly impossible. I then break them up for what seems like good. And lastly, when all is lost and hearts lay in tatters, I help them find a believable path around or over their obstacles. Its not always easy and can require some creative problem solving on my part. But nothing feels better for me as a writer and, I hope, my readers than when my couple beats the odds and earns their happily-ever-after.

What qualifies me for this, you ask? Personal experience comes into play, sure. Yeah, yeah, I reconnected with my husband five years ago at our high school reunion and we got married three years ago. That’s not the romantic story I’m talking about. More recently I fell madly in love, and this particular relationship very much mirrors a romance book.

We met, were immediately attracted to one another. We had a lot in common and we fell head over heels. But, alas, we encountered difficulties that threatened our happiness. Luckily, we found a solution and are now happily cohabitating. Who is this love interest if not my husband? Well, it’s a community.

This one right here.

Moon Valley and I first “met” when hubby and I attended the wedding of my good friend’s son. It was love and first sight but remained a long distance relationship until last fall when the timing was finally right and we could be together (hubby retired). Each time we visited Moon Valley, I fell deeper in love.

Hubby and I found our dream home and after a rocky negotiation period, opened escrow. But, alas, things didn’t proceed smoothly. Moon Valley and I were on the verge of heartbreak. Love prevailed, however, and we eventually closed escrow.

Moon Valley and I are now living our happily-ever-after. The end.

See, it is like a romance book. But all kidding aside, hubby and I couldn’t be happier. Moon Valley is the perfect community for us. We may be smack dab in the middle of a big city, but it feels like we living in a small town. Great neighbors.

Quaint businesses. Plenty of fun activities. I don’t know where else in the valley you could find that.

Balancing the Brain

A VALENTINE LOVE LETTER TO THE FOUNDING FATHERS (AND MOTHERS)

Balance and brain health are two important health variables that can suffer dramatically as we age. Fortunately, research suggests improving one can benefit the other, particularly in terms of their interaction.

Researchers have found that senior patients who perform balance exercises improve brain neuroplasticity – essentially the brain’s ability to restructure itself – and reduce cortical overactivation, both of which can benefit overall balance.

In their study, a summary of which appears in the Journal of Clinical Medicine, researchers divided older adults (average age, 65 years) into three groups: one that performed classic balance exercises, another that performed virtual reality balance exercises, and a control group. The study lasted 12 weeks, and neuroimaging studies were conducted at the beginning and end of the 12-week training period.

In reviewing their findings, the researchers concluded: “With age, postural control may become more consciously controlled (cortically). Systematic [balance training] of moderate intensity may reverse age-related cortical over-activations and appear to be a factor mediating neuroplasticity in older adults.” They also found that classical balance exercises significantly increased serum BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), important because «aging or neurodegenerative diseases are associated with a decrease in BDNF expression.”

In reading The Pillars of Hercules by Paul Theroux, I learned a lot about what a modern dictatorship looks like. I hadn’t expected to learn a lesson like that when reading what I thought was a travelogue set in the 1990s!

Shortly after he was married Theroux decided to make good on his desire to skirt the Mediterranean Sea by train, car, boat, or whatever manner of conveyance he could find. He, after all, was a travel writer by trade. He decided to do it in wintertime to avoid summer vacationers. He knew he would encounter rough weather sometimes...he did experience the Mistral, a big wind that shuts down ferry service and whole towns.

His experiences that struck me as being so instructive were his travels in countries ruled by dictators. In those countries he saw large and small photographs of the ruling leader posted everywhere, including in people’s homes. Often the citizens would have had to look at these images for decades. Every household, every place of work, every street had images of the man who controlled people’s speech and thoughts, and made big and small decisions. People who spoke out against him were killed or jailed and their families persecuted in some way. Violence has a way of producing fear. These countries generally were not prosperous. In one country that had been invaded from all sides again and again, the ruler commanded that every family had to have a concrete bunker with horizontal or vertical slits to be used as gun sights. And, every family had to own at least one firearm, mostly made in the country by a Russian company. The countryside was littered with concrete bunkers! These countries remain in the newscasts today!

Theroux was so shaken by what he experienced during the first part of his trip that he went back to Hawaii to his bride to recover. The hotels and food in some countries were not conducive to health and he didn’t feel well.

The book is so important. It makes me love, love, love democracy all over again.

My ancestors (at least 4 patriots) participated in creating The Fincastle Resolution and supported the Revolutionary War in many ways. The Constitution was dear to them.

My Mom and Dad and two sets of grandparents were proud supporters of their heritage and pledged to keep it going. Mom charged us kids with its maintenance and continued improvement. One Way to Buy a Home T H E W R I T E S T U F F BY G E R R Y J O H N S O N Recently a client was referred to me for pre-qualification for a mortgage. In our preliminary talk, I asked how much money they wanted to put for down payment.

The response was no money down. They didn’t have money for a down payment but had a good job and pretty good credit, and had heard about programs that provide down payment money if you could qualify. They were right.

Down Payment Assistance programs (DPAs) are available. In fact, there are a number of such programs. Many of these programs are offered through government agencies. The State of Arizona, Maricopa County and the City of Phoenix each offer DPAs. There are others available as well. This is money raised from the financial markets – not the taxpayers.

After taking a preliminary application, the program that seemed to be of the most benefit to this buyer was offered by the “Arizona Industrial Development Authority (AZIDA) HOME PLUS Home buyer Down Payment Assistance Program – Above 80% AMI.” WOW, how would you like to have to type that several times a day.

The advantage to this program is that it spans the entire state (not limited to the City of Phoenix). We chose the FHA option, however, there are also Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, VA, and USDA versions available.

This program provides up to 5% of the loan amount to be used for Down Payment and Closing Cost assistance. FHA requires 3 ½% Down, so on a $200,000 purchase, the down payment required would be $7,000 and the loan amount would be $193,000. Thus, the DP assistance would be $9,650, and there would be $2,650 left to pay closing costs. Enough of the calculations.

This is a “Seller’s Market” and there aren’t too many $200,000 properties available, but the buyer was looking in the Sun City area and there are more modestly priced homes out there. Sun City communities have a big Capital Preservation fee, so it is usual and customary to ask the seller to pay that transfer fee plus a portion of the other closing costs (1 or 2% of the sale price). If the seller agrees, the buyer is basically into their new home with no money down.

The $9,650 assistance is provided in the form of a “forgivable silent second” mortgage. If my client remains in the home for three years, the second goes away and they owe nothing on that portion. There are no payments on the “silent second.” But, if they sell before 3 years, they have to pay the prorated balance upon sale.

It sounds too good to be true, however, there are several restrictions. The upper income limit for this program is $105,291 (their income is below that). The max-

imum Debt to Income Ratio (DTI – revolving and credit card payments divided by gross income) is 50%. They have a healthy car payment and several credit card payments which limit them to the $200,000 range when you add in the projected house payment.

There are a few additional origination fees added by the program administrator and the interest rate is about a point higher than is available on a regular FHA mortgage. The FICO score must be 640 or above, but most lenders, that will do this loan, require 680.

Is this a good deal? If you don’t have money to put down and you want to buy a home, this is a great deal. After 3 years the second goes away, and if home appreciation continues the way it has for the last 75 years, they can refinance to a current rate and eliminate the FHA mortgage insurance.

The very first step is to find a mortgage loan officer with whom you are comfortable and get Pre-Qualified, then find a knowledgeable Realtor and you are on your way to a new home.

Color Exploration: Yellow B Y K AT H L E E N V I C K Yellow, the color often used to represent the sun, signifies, warmth, energy, friendship, cheerfulness and hospitality. A cautionary note: pure, unadulterated yellow has been linked to anxiety so it should be employed with caution. Yellow can brighten a north-facing, or gloomy space; it can be uplifting in the morning—especially for those folks who have difficulty “getting started” and can assist in brightening one’s attitude. Consequently, it may be a good choice for a bathroom, especially one with little or no natural light.

Yellow can be a deceitful little rascal because it seems lighter than it actually is (in future pieces I will discuss how to tell the lightness or darkness of a color).

Another word of caution: yellow is very “transparent”—it shows soil more than any other color so it is problematic when used on flooring or other surfaces that are prone to soil, fingerprints, etc.

Adding red to yellow produces orange that conveys a fiery, impetuous temperament; adding blue produces green that conveys a love of all things natural.

When black is added, making a shade of yellow—and get ready for this—it becomes olive. Olive is not green; it is a shade of yellow and is a favorite military color!

By adding white to make a tint, all of those soft buttery colors emerge that conveys congeniality.

To dull yellow, add purple; the addition of enough purple to create a balance produces a rich neutral, different from the neutral when red and green are balanced—and different when blue and orange are balanced. Using those three combinations can create a rich, complex neutral color scheme that expresses sophistication and intellectual prowess.

How can they tell?

M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C BY D EB B IE ER BS TO E SSER It happened again. Within just a few minutes of meeting someone new, they told me I seem to be one with a ‘strong personality’…? And just how exactly could he tell that? It sounds like an insult, yet this person is a business owner and just accepted my very large check. Then again, there has been another local business owner who had no problem insulting me, so you just never know!?! I stewed over this for a while and then googled it.

Turns out that it’s not an insult at all, though I am sure many people have meant for it to be. Every single one of Michael Prywes “Traits of a Strong Personality” defines me perfectly. They are: *Impatient with excuses; the kind where the perp is laying blame and whining about everyone and thing, not accepting any wrong doing. Not the kind of excuse that’s real…like when I was blocking a fire truck from getting to their emergency because I was rocking out in my car to ‘God’s not Dead’ oblivious their siren. I was mortified. This was back when I drove an SUV with flowers on the luggage rack and everyone knew it was me. It’s taken me this long, some 6 years to admit this in public. I was so embarrassed when I looked up to a wall of red and saw a fire fighter looking down on my dancing, waiting for me to move! It wasn’t the radio station’s fault for playing my favorite song.

It was my fault for playing it too loudly. Ugh… I don’t blast music when I’m driving anymore, but I do still dance. *Careful of whom they let in. I’ve been burned by too many people. I have very few friends because of it. I like lots of people, I just don’t trust many.

I have hanging in my kitchen a little sign that says, “Love many, trust few. Always paddle your own canoe.” I do and sometimes it’s lonely. *Hate small talk. It’s all I can do not to roll my eyes at, “Is it hot enough for you?” Seriously? There are days when I think hell might be cooler! *Know how to listen. I’ve been told that I would make a good counselor because I listen so well and don’t pop off with advice. This would be because I treat others the way I’d want to be treated. . . ‘Just listen and let me vent. I didn’t ask for your advice, so don’t give it.’ However some are uncomfortable with being heard without input. *Can’t stand ignorance and instant judgments one knows nothing about.

That’s because we tend to be thoughtful and well informed. If not, I’m not dumb enough to bluff my way through. I just admit I don’t know. *Don’t need attention. I don’t wear hats because I need or want attention.

I wear them because they finish off my outfit, keep me warm, hide a bad hair day or save my skin from more wrinkles. I’ve been complimented twice in the last five days that I look much younger than 60, so it must be helping. I used to care what people thought of my 70+ hats and got embarrassed, but I really couldn’t care less anymore. *Fearless-to a point…because those with a strong personality are afraid of something like everyone else is, but we don’t let it dictate the way we live our life. We are comfortable with ourselves (most of the time) and don’t need validation. *See insecurity as an opportunity to do better and work on flaws, knowing they aren’t perfect. I know I have a lot to work on, but confront me and I’ll be confrontational. Not a Godly trait, so like I said, I have a lot to work on. Strong people don’t have to win, but we don’t let people walk all over us.

That about sums me up, so if anyone is trying to insult me they’ll have to do better, because now I know it is my truth and I am no longer ashamed. *As for RBF, it’s real and it’s a curse. . .google it. When you see someone looking angry, don’t assume the worst and tell them they’re ‘intimidating’ when they may have no idea it’s the vibe they’re projecting. That’s insulting, hurtful and just plain mean. Maybe just ask if they’re having a bad day. After a few of those queries they may realize they have it.

A vital part of every dental exam

BY D R . M E L A N I E S I M C H A K H U L L , D D S Many of us visit our dentist two times a year for a professional cleaning and examination. Looking for cracked, broken or decayed teeth is an important part of that exam. Equally important is the evaluation for oral cancer.

Oral cancer is divided into two categories – those occurring in the oral cavity (your lips, the inside of your cheeks, teeth, gums, the front two-thirds of your tongue and the floor and roof of your mouth) and those occurring in the oropharynx (middle region of the throat, including the tonsils and base of the tongue).

Early detection may result in better treatment outcomes and may help keep you or someone you love from becoming one of the 1000s of people whose lives will be claimed this year by the disease.

It’s important to be aware of the following signs and symptoms and to see your dentist if they do not disappear after two weeks.

A sore or irritation that doesn’t go away Red or white patches Pain, tenderness or numbness in mouth or lips A lump, thickening, rough spot, crust or small eroded area Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving your tongue or jaw A change in the way your teeth fit together when you close your mouth Research has identified several factors that increase the risk of developing oral cancers. Men are twice more likely to get oral cancer than women. Smokers and excessive alcohol drinkers older than 50 are the most at-risk. The human papilloma virus (HPV), has also been associated with throat cancers at the back of the mouth, and this type of oral cancer is increasing.

Regular dental check-ups that include an oral cancer screening is a critical step for early detection and treatment.

Every trunk should have some. The 2020 mission here is to accomplish that. So if you are reading these great words of wisdom and you ask me for some twine, I will be so pleased to share some for your trunk.

Added news is a success story of a Moon Valley resident and their interaction with a telephone scam artist. These scam artists are VERY persuasive when they get you on the phone and you start to talk. Seems in this case, many rules were broken...

1. Do not give them any contact information 2. Do not give them your address 3. Do not believe them if they tell you you’ve won money 4. Do not agree to go to the bank with your checkbook and pay a fee just to cash the check!

Even with so many laws and rules in place they manage to circumvent them and pray of the unsuspecting people, often the elderly. It is not right but they wouldn’t be doing it if it were not profitable. So, let us do everything we can to discourage this by educating and protecting our family and friends.

Me Llamo Shannon Dos Semanas Eschuchando y Tratando de Hablar Español (Two Weeks Listening to and Trying to Speak Spanish)

By Shannon E. Perry Ten years ago, I spend two weeks in Cuernavaca, Mexico, in a Spanish Immersion class. At the end of that experience, one of my classmates told the instructors that “We are now confused at a higher level.” During the last four years, I completed four semesters of Spanish at Paradise Valley Community College and during two summers, I took private Spanish lessons. With my daughter, I spent two weeks in Spain. And I still can’t speak Spanish!

In November, 2019, I tried again to learn to speak Spanish with a two week immersion experience in Pucón, Chile. We flew to Santiago, Chile, then on to Temuco, and by van to our lodging in a campamento (camp), Rañin Killen, in Pucón which is in Patagonia, a beautiful mountainous region of southern Chile. A beautiful volcano, Villaricca, was very close to Pucón and occasionally we could see smoke or vapor coming from the top.

There were 12 of us from Colorado (I summer in Colorado) and one from California. We were divided into groups in the cabins. There were five in our cabin which could have accommodated one more; a married couple had one small cabin; two men shared another cabin; and four others were in the last cabin. We had a potbellied stove (which smoked) for heat in our cabin so we used a number of blankets to keep warm at night. Most of the time we had hot water for showers. There was an outdoor toilet and shower which some of the group used.

We had wonderful local food prepared by the owners of the camp who also taught us history, geography, and the Mapuche culture of Chile; how to make empanadas; and offered a yoga class twice a week. The moves were all described in Spanish so we learned or reviewed names of muscles and parts of the body. All conversations were in Spanish (with a few English translations for those of us who needed it). Our teachers were a Chilean woman married to an American man who had spent several years in Chile teaching Spanish and English. We also had a local Spanish teacher who teaches Spanish and English as a second language.

minute walk before breakfast led by one of our teachers. He assigned a topic for the day and each of us was required to say a sentence or two (or more) about the topic. Examples of topics were familia (family), mascotas (pets), and amigos (friends). In the evenings, we played Jeopardy with the answers given in Spanish and we were to ask the question using a full sentence and in Spanish. A fun way to learn.

We were close to Pucón and most afternoons we went into the village to shop, eat, or just look around. Some of us took the opportunity to attend Mass in a local church as well in a monastery where the sisters were cloistered and behind a screen separated from the congregation (which on the day we attended consisted of three of us). It reminded me of the Sound of Music.

The singing was beautiful and accompanied by a guitar, keyboard, triangle, and drum. The view from the monastery was beautiful. We saw the whole village and the snow-covered mountains in the background.

We visited a primary school and met Mapuche children and had a brief lesson about the culture. We donated school supplies and toothbrushes for the children. One of the older students had the role of “Dental Police.” She was responsible for assuring that the children all brushed their teeth three times a day. Two little boys who proudly told me they were Mapuche showed me around the school. We spent some time with the children teaching English.

Two of us visited a new preschool and I visited a nursing home and had my photo taken with a woman who was 102 years old.

We had opportunities on the weekend for additional sightseeing. Some went to mudbaths and most of us went hiking in Huequelhue National Park. One day a number of us went horseback riding. After about a 45 minute ride, we stopped to let the horses rest. Before I was able to dismount, my horse decided to roll! I was able to kick the stirrups off and when the horse was close to the ground crawled away. The other riders watched but were unable to do anything to assist. I did get back on a horse and ride back.

My hip and knee were sore but we stopped on the way home and purchased some ice. I kept ice on for about 4 hours and suffered no ill effects.

We also had an opportunity for a dinner in a traditional Mapuche home. The meat was cooked over an open fire in the middle of the room. We had empanadas, vegetables, and some fruit. We were entertained by a man playing the guitar and singing traditional music. We also had the opportunity to try on Mapuche traditional clothes and jewelry.

It was a wonderful experience in a beautiful country with lovely people. And I do speak and understand a little more Spanish.

Hey Kid! Get a Job or Volunteer

BY BO LARSEN When school gets out this spring, how many college or high school students will start looking for a job or volunteer service hours? How successful will they be if they wait? They probably won’t find something that pays great, will make life-long friendships and have an experience they will cherish the rest of their careers. Camp Civitan is offering this opportunity.

Founded in 1968 in the cool north woods of Williams, Arizona, Camp Civitan was one of the first stay-over camps for people with disabilities in the country. Today, the 15-acre wheelchair accessible camp is recognized nationally for its services and programs for the developmentally disabled. The summer camp offers 10-weeklong sessions where campers experience a variety of enriching and fun experiences that promote positive self-esteem, teamwork, socialization, and healthy activities.

Camp Civitan is part of Civitan Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization providing services for children, youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The foundation is recognized as a community leader in dynamic, purposeful, and impactful programs and services that promote independence, community integration and a healthy lifestyle.

Each weeklong camp session, starting May 25 through August 10, offers special needs campers, some as young as 8 and as old as 65, the opportunity to make new friends, sing, dance, create art projects, do theatrical skits, fish and visit area attractions. Many of the trips include the Grand Canyon, Bearizona,

area lakes, and other local destinations. Campers and staff, as well, gain many new life skills which include self-confidence and independence.

On average, summer staff, 18 years-of-age and older return to Camp Civitan for four summers, and many work weekends during one of the 12-weekend camp sessions throughout the year. Staff not only return to camp each year for the fun and relationships with other staff and returning campers, but camp staff positions are also paid, on average, for the entire 10-week summer sessions over $5,000, including all meals and lodging.

Camp Civitan encourages teens, ages 13-17, to volunteer. Not only will the experience offer community service hours and resume reference, but teens will share their talents and skills, learn activity planning, develop leadership skills and make life-long memories and friends, as well. Volunteers spend a full week at camp, which includes food and dorm accommodations. Assignments include kitchen duty, organizing sporting activities and assisting camp staff with members.

BY JULIE PEK When Moon Valley was developing around the golf course, designated streets were named after other golf courses around the country. Deepdale, Forest Hills, Tam O’Shanter, etc. This strong connection between golf and the community still exists today.

Golf friends of Andy and Caitlin introduced Moon Valley to them about 2 years ago. Relocating from Tucson, they were looking all around the valley for a home, “We found an older home that was remodeled with an oversized yard,” Caitlin said. “And being so close to the golf course was a bonus,” she added.

Finding Your Unique Fix (Physically and emotionally) with Dr. Gary Grover

I have been a chiropractor for many years, seeing over 14,000 patients. I started Moon Valley Chiropractic in 2000, owning it for eleven years. After working in Prescott for over seven years, I decided to come back to Phoenix to finish my chiropractic career. I have learned many methods, and use kinesiology or muscle testing to make very specific corrections of the spine and extremities. It’s Official: Moon Valley Day declared January 8th

BY BRET ALDIERI, MVNA PRESIDENT Happy New Year Moon Valley residents and visitors!

You probably were not aware, but January 8th was Moon Valley Day. A happy day indeed for Moon Valley but more to come on this topic.

MVNA held its annual meeting on January 8th at Moon Valley Country Club which was open to the public. The event was preceded by a one-hour happy hour where neighbors got a chance to meet each other, our City Mayor, Council person, Black Mountain Precinct police leadership and the MVNA board of directors.

Our City of Phoenix Mayor, The Honorable Kate Gallego attended and proclaimed January 8, 2020 as Moon Valley Day! It was great for the Mayor to recognize the unique history and character of our Moon Valley community.

Deb Stark (our city Council Representative) spoke of the progress in street paving with a plan to get 7th street repaved in 2020. It was also noted that the water pipeline project sponsored by MVCC, The Pointe and The City was also completed in 2019. Both spoke about city growth and the challenges our city faces. These include: the growing homeless situation in parts of the city,

removal of red-light cameras and how to control speeding, just adopted new rules regarding Airbnb to limit neighborhood disruptions from “party house” events, and support for continued independent and affordable living for our seniors.

The Black Mountain Police Precinct was well represented and spoke to the issues affecting our community and how the police is using data to better position patrols. There continues to be city support to expand the police force, with more recruits at the academy to bring more “motors” to our streets for traffic safety management and be more responsive to resident needs.

Brett Evans (GM for Moon Valley Country Club) spoke about bringing the Moon Walk course back to playable condition in February and that the club is open to partner with the community to address concerns regarding the condition of the property perimeters.

I provided an update on the MVNA for 2019. The Food for Lights campaign raised more than 2,600 pounds of food that was donated to Desert Mission Food Bank – led by Ron Wyckmans. Other board members were noted for helping renew our website, bring an on-line dues payment option, coordination of community events like yard sales, GAIN and candle packing / distribution.

He finished second overall in piano, which qualified him for the All-State Jazz Band II. He will go on to perform with the All-State Jazz Band II at the Mesa Arts Center at the end of January. This is an amazing opportunity for students to display their musical talent and achievement to put on their college applications.

Severe teacher shortage in Arizona continues

For the fifth consecutive year, Arizona School Personnel Administrators Association (ASPAA) has surveyed school districts and charter schools throughout Arizona in August and December. The latest survey results confirm the continued teacher shortage in Arizona. The data indicates about 24% of teacher vacancies across the state this year remain unfilled, and more than half the vacancies are filled by teachers who do not meet the state’s certification requirements. These results reinforce the need to increase funding for public education. Arizona teacher pay remains one of the lowest in the country, even with the recent education budget increase.

Arizona children deserve the best teachers in the nation. School district and charter schools compete nationally for the limited pool of candidates. The inability to offer competitive salaries severely limits public schools from attracting the best and the brightest.

The severity of the teacher shortage must be addressed. Arizona’s leaders must make a collective effort to ensure the recruitment and retention of effective teachers through increased funding. Highly educated and skilled work force are cornerstones to a growing and thriving economy.

The survey focused on teacher vacancies and teachers who have already severed employment as of December 2019, and 209 school districts and charter schools throughout Arizona participated.

AZ Women’s Partnership, Inc. announces its 2020 Grant Application The Arizona Women’s Partnership, inc., an ALL volunteer philanthropic 501 c(3) non-profit, which awards grants to grass roots charities that assist under-served women and children at risk here in Arizona, announces the availability of its 2020 grant application.

The Arizona Women’s Partnership applicants must be 501 c(3) non-profits with an operating budget of under $450,000; be AZ based; be in good financial standing; be non-sectarian; non-partisan; non-school affiliated; and reflect our mission. The Arizona Women’s Partnership 2020 grant application, which is at www.azwp.org, must be postmarked by March 31, 2020. Grant awards will be distributed mid-year.

«We are proud to note that the Arizona Women›s Partnership, inc. has awarded over $450,000 in grants since 2003 to over 70 grass roots non-profits, many of which are multiple year recipients», notes Paula Cullison, AZWP President and Founder and long time Moon Valley resident. “The Arizona Women’s Partnership plans to award over $30,000 in grants this cycle”, she added. Also on the grant review committee are other Moon Valley residents and major AZWP supporters: Pamela Gill, Tim Cullison, Dr. Sheela Kalangi and Jeff Gibbs.

Grant recipients address critical issues, such as: domestic violence, child abuse, adult literacy, youth at risk, ESL, foster children, refugees, homelessness, health and hunger. Funds are generated through donations and fundraisers. Grant recipient profiles are on the website.

“We gratefully acknowledge another generous donations totally over $200,000 from the Violet M. Johnson Family Foundation, given (since 2008) in honor of their late maternal grandmother whose philanthropy continues to help women and children in need”, Cullison noted.
