GUHSD Governing Board Welcomes 63 New Teachers

Glendale Union High School District recently held its annual New Teacher Dinner that proudly welcomed 63 new teachers who will contribute to the GUHSD Excellence.

The GUHSD Governing Board hosted the dinner on Tuesday, July 16 at Thunderbird High School. The gathering provided the opportunity for the Governing Board to meet each one of the new teachers and learn more about their education, experience and achievements. The teachers were also able to socialize and build connections with their new co-workers.

Of the 63 new teachers hired, 22 are first-year teachers, 16 are GUHSD graduates and nine have completed their student teaching within the district. In addition, three of the educators started their roles within GUHSD as instructional assistants and became teachers through the district’s support staff professional growth program.

The district welcomes all of our wonderful new teachers to the GUHSD family!

August, the 8th month, where has 2019 gone? School is getting ready to start, only 5 months till Christmas, and I still have so many things on my to do list for 2019! I am always trying to find that perfect little notebook to capture all my to do’s, notes, records, and important stuff. Ha, I must have about 50 of them going right now, but they are so cute, and of course if you know me they are also filled with doodles. I don’t lose things, but sometimes it just takes me a bit longer to find them.

I started searching on-line for help in this area, google to-do lists, you see that about 50 million different apps are available to also help in this area. Monday.com, smart sheet, jolt, wrike, and this list goes on, talk about more work and confusing.

I know I am not alone, most of us have been there, 10 million things to do every day and yet nothing ever seems to get done. List after list and all it feels like is you add and never seem to conquer. Is it time management or something else?

So, I started a little research on what works: first off let me tell you, they say only 11% actually finish what they start out to do. Not the best percentage, but if you want to try to inch your way into the top 10, here are a few tips.

A few of my favorites: The 1=3=5 Rule: map out one big thing, three medium things, and five smaller things you want to get done that day, you will know where your priorities lie, what can wait, and what cannot. You leave the 3 and 5’s with open holes somedays to work on what might pop up, unavoidable.

Be specific about what each to-do item entails: be realistic about what it will take to get it done, many things are multi step, take longer periods of time and efforts. The long list and the short list as I like to put it.

The Done List: back to my old paper and pens, I love the look of the big X, cross it off, done! It’s a great visual in both respects, looking back over the day, you see all you did and all you did not. I wake-up call that we may need to refocus and rethink what you’re spending your day doing.

So, let’s just start fresh again today, pencil in at least 3 things, we gotta, must, need to get done today, we can do it! Tomorrow we will worry about the rest.

As a parent, you can take steps to put

your kids on the path toward a successful school year.

To help your children put the best foot forward, consider these suggestions from The Salvation Army, which operates hundreds of low-cost after-school programs for kids of all ages in low-income neighborhoods across the country and understands the importance of setting children up for success all year.

Get back into a routine. During the summer months, family routines tend to slide, especially morning rituals and bedtime habits. A few weeks before school starts, begin transitioning your way back to a normal school schedule.

A gentle progression toward earlier bed and wake-up times is easier on kids physically and mentally. Try adjusting by 15 minutes each day until you reach the optimal schedule for your family. Remember that routines aren’t just about the clock, though. If there are certain steps that are part of the school year routine, such as packing lunches and laying out clothes for the next day before bed, make those part of your transition plan, too.

Set a good example. Kids learn important behavioral lessons by watching the adults in their lives. The back-to-school season provides many opportunities to demonstrate compassion and social responsibility. For example, giving back to an organization like The Salvation Army helps provide funding for programs that support the educational needs of children who otherwise may not have access to the same resources.

Research resources for homework help. Discovering your child is struggling in school can be overwhelming. You’ll want to be able to pull in

Your school likely has some options available, but it’s a good idea to also look into tutoring programs and other community services that encourage literacy and study skills as well as provide one-on-one assistance with homework and school assignments.

Get organized. The first few weeks of school typically bring plenty of change and adjustment. You can help manage the stress by creating some structure. Use a wall calendar to keep track of school start and dismissal times, bus pick-up and drop-off times, after school activities and other appointments.

Review lunch menus and plan ahead so you’re not finding out at bedtime that you need to pack a home lunch in the morning. Stock up on breakfast foods and make time to catch up on laundry before school begins so hunger and wayward socks don’t derail your mornings.

Explore extra-curricular programs. With the new school year comes numerous ways to enrich your kids’ social and cognitive development. Extracurricular activities let kids continue practicing skills even after the school bell rings, but in a fun environment so they may not even realize they’re still learning and cultivating healthy, safe relationships with friends. In addition to sports and clubs, a wide array of music and art education activities may be available that focus on everything from choir, band and dancing to drawing, writing and acting.

Set goals. Begin the school year by encouraging your children to take ownership and pride in their learning. Talk about goals like reading a certain number of books each month or earning grades that reflect their highest potential. Get kids motivated by designing goal boards or charts that can serve as daily reminders and track their progress. For larger goals, consider setting milestones so they can celebrate progress along the way and stay motivated for a big finish.

Is it Time to UPdate your old Trust?

I review many trusts, and some of them are quite old. After these old trusts were put in place lots of things have changed: the federal estate planning laws, the Arizona Trust Code, and of course, the situation of the people who are included in the trust. When so much has changed, it’s clearly time to update the trust.

When we do an update, we usually do a complete amendment – called a restatement – of the trust. We keep the original trust name and date, and just note that it was restated as of the date we sign the new documents. That way, anything already titled to or transferred to the trust is still in the trust – we have no need to change the title on homes or bank accounts again.

So what kinds of changes might be suggested for an older trust? First, for a couple who has a joint trust, the old trust may require a split into “A” and “B” trusts on the death of the first spouse. The B trust is usually the deceased spouse’s trust and contains his or her separate property and his or her share of the community property. The surviving spouse still benefits from the trust, at least to the extent of receiving income. However, that trust is irrevocable. It cannot be changed. In addition, that trust now has its own tax identification number and the trustee must file separate tax returns for that trust.

Often the sole reason for this division into A and B trusts is estate tax planning.

These older trusts were designed to avoid federal estate taxes back when the exemption was much lower (at one point only $650,000). The trust provides for division into A and B Trusts to maximize the deceased person’s tax exemption.

Now, however, each person’s exemption – the level at which the federal estate tax kicks in is $11.4 million per person. In addition, Congress has made a person’s federal estate tax exemption “portable.” In simple terms, “portability” means that when the first spouse dies, the surviving spouse can file an estate tax return and pick up the deceased spouse’s unused federal estate tax exemption and add it to her own exemption. Portability of the exemption has been made permanent.

Because of this change in the federal estate tax laws, not many of us need to worry about or plan for federal estate taxes. The division into two trusts may not only be unnecessary but undesirable. When we look at whether to update these provisions of your trust, we analyze all of this and decide what is best for you given your situation and how the estate tax laws impact you.

Another reason for a change may be in how your assets are distributed to your beneficiaries on your death. Let’s assume you have two children, and they are already adults over age 35. Your old trust may provide that they get distributions of one-third of their inheritance at ages 25, 30 and 35. Since they are older than this, they get the entire

inheritance in an outright distribution.

That may not be the best idea, however, and the changes in the Arizona Trust Code let us distribute their share in a trust for them that can be very beneficial.

An example that could be plucked from the 2008 economic disaster shows what can happen (and a court case on this issue exists, so it is a real issue). Son started a business, but in the economic downturn, it didn’t make it. He filed bankruptcy. Within a few months after filing, Mom passed away, leaving him everything in an outright distribution. It was all his. Except it wasn’t his. Instead, because he had filed bankruptcy, it all went to his bankruptcy trustee.

If Mom had given the assets in trust, we may have been able to save that inheritance to give son a fresh start. But she didn’t, so the bankruptcy took all she worked so hard to leave behind.

Another example is the beneficiary with a rocky marriage or who is going through a divorce, the continuing trust can assure that your beneficiary gets your money. By keeping assets in trust, you can ensure that your trust assets do not go to a former sonin-law or daughter-in-law, or their bloodline.

An inheritance is separate property, meaning that your beneficiary’s spouse isn’t entitled to it in a divorce. However, if you give the money directly to the beneficiary and she commingles her inheritance with assets of the marital community, they are no longer separate. When you convey your assets in a continuing trust, the assets remain separate property, and are protected from being divided up in a divorce.

The Trust may protect the inheritance in the event of your heir’s death as well. Let’s say your daughter inherits from you and puts everything in joint accounts. On her death, her husband will receive all of the inheritance because it is now joint property.

And then, what if he remarries and doesn’t put a plan in place for those assets to go to your grandchildren? The assets may go to the new wife, and when she dies, to her children. With a trust, you can make sure it goes where you want it to – you can even benefit your daughter’s husband during his life if you daughter dies first, but be sure that ultimately your grandchildren receive the inheritance when their parents are both gone.

GenerationZ Cars - The Audi a3 B Y J O H A N S W A R T, C O R N E L S W A R T & J A N S W A R T The other day we had the chance to drive the Audi A3. In Europe you can get your hands on a tiny Audi A2 and a tinier Audi A1as well. We liked the Audi but were surprised when we learned the complicated history behind this car company. Where the first Daimler car was sold in 1892, Audi’s history didn’t start until 1899, when August Horch founded Horch & Cie. in Cologne Germany and build his first car. Like any visionary, Horch had issues with members of his company board and left the company (sounds similar to Steve Jobs) to start another company and do things his way. However, he could not use his last name again so he chose its Latin translation - so “Horch!” – or “Hark” – became “Audi”. The idea was conceived by the son of a business partner – which shows that even back then – the younger generation (Gen A?) rocked! In the early days Audi became known for racing. 17 years later, Danish engineer Jørgen Skafte Rasmussen, a two-stroke model engine maker, formed a company called DKW. After trying many different products for his engines, DKW hit the jackpot and in 1924, became the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. However, poor war economics in 1932 caused DKW to merge with car manufacturer’s Audi, Horch and Wanderer to form Auto Union. Auto Union quickly made headlines with their

rear engine V16 race cars and proudly displayed the four circle DKW Auto Union emblem – the four overlapping circles represented the four ma nu facturers joining and is now synonymous with Audi. During that era, Audi became the first mass producer of front wheel drive cars and DKW offered disk brakes as an option on cars as opposed to drum brakes. Mercedes Benz bought DKW Auto Union in 1957 but sold it to Volkswagen in 1964.

VW decided to drop the DKW brand name and renamed the last DKW sedan, the Audi F103. Audi became the luxury brand of VW, similar to Toyota Lexus, Datsun Nissan Infinity, Ford Lincoln, Chevrolet Cadillac and the Honda Acura manufacturers.

Audi’s history was marked with design trends that changed the automotive world, for example, rear engine racers, front wheel drive, four-wheel drive (Quattro) passenger cars, disk brakes, and world class rally racing. Our A3 came in white with a stylish brown/black interior. We wanted to see whether the Audi is worth the extra dollars compared to its VW counterpart.

The A3 is offered in a front wheel drive configuration as well as an all-wheel drive system also known as a Quattro. The interior of the car and its quality of materials is excellent for this price point. The leather seats are comfy, the dashboard is soft to the touch. The buttons and knobs felt sturdy, and while the infotainment system may not be a touchscreen, it still has Apple Carplay and Android Auto. As for the safety features automated emergency braking and forward-collision warning are both standard, but options such as adaptive cruise control, a self-parking feature, and automatic high-beam headlamps are extra. While those are very nice features, they aren’t essential, but handy to have, so don’t scratch this car off your list. Like most compact sedans, this car suffers from a lack of room. Due to the sunroof being standard on all but the base model, taller people are robbed of much needed head room in the driver seat as well as the passenger seats. The leg room is fine in the front, but the rear seat space is not designed for passengers over 6’0”. The trunk space is good given the size of the vehicle and the ride of the vehicle is comfortable, but road noise is quite intrusive and not what we expected from an Audi. Perhaps a different choice of tire will reduce the road noise. However if you require more space the Audi A4 costs only $6,000 more and while that may seem like a lot more, the difference is well worth it.

So, what made the Audi special compared to its VW counterparts. The answer lays in the vehicle’s increased engine power, design, trim quality and external appearance. The interior are stylish and upmarket with soft dashboard materials, leather, silver colored/chrome inserts and extra features that sets it apart from the VW brand products. From a value of money perspective, perhaps the VW products are a better deal. However, if your preference is luxury mixed with more features and sportiness, then the Audi is definitely for you. Of the three luxury German car brands, we put Audi at the top of the list for build quality and reliability. “Vorsprung durch Technik” is an Audi slogan internationally used for the last 30 years. It means “lead through technology” and the Audi A3 did. The A3 made us feel important, was sporty and fun to drive, which simply exceeded our yuppie GenZ expectations!

daughter which meant close surveillance of who entered and exited the classroom. I wanted the director to have an education in early education so they knew what they were doing and how they were helping their staff or teachers grow. We wanted an open learning community and environment.

We ended up choosing Anderson Preparatory Academy for all the reasons stated above. Not only is it tucked away from the street making it safe, but it has a big open space and large learning community with outside interests (like karate or dance) for the young kids. My daughter Brynn has been with Anderson since she was six months old. We can’t love the community of teachers, parents, and kids enough.

What I’m trying to say is that when you go on your tour, make sure you ask questions that matter to you. And don’t be afraid to get your expectations met! You want vegan food? Ask for it! You want your child to be rocked a certain way? Make sure they do it!

The first 7 years are CRUCIAL for your child’s development. Which leads me to...

Check that the daycare doesn’t have much turnover.

This is my final and best piece of advice. Young children crave routine and studies have shown that it helps them play better. (Hello! We learn through play!) I know that my daughter is absolutely bonkers when her routine is thrown off.

Next, I’m going to say this: It is an absolute crime that early education teachers do not get paid better. Most are paid minimum wage. They are setting the foundations for how our children respond, act, and behave. Aristotle once said, “Give me a child until he is 7 and I’ll show you the man.” Which means that the fundamentals of a person’s personality and learning happens in those young years.

At any rate, today’s reality is that most daycare teachers will be new to the early education field and that’s okay: You want to look for nurturing and consistent teachers in your child’s classroom. You want to make sure your child feels safe to grow. If you notice that teachers are leaving the school quickly, make sure to have a conversation with the director about what is happening and why this is concerning to your child’s growth.

Finally, I’m going to leave it at this: I am a Montessori-educated child from the ages of 2-6. My oldest sister was not Montessori-educated. She was accepted into Harvard. I was not. The point that I’m trying to make is that early education teaching philosophies grounded in Piaget, Montessori, Waldorf are grounded, relevant, and inspiring, but at the end of the day, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Meaning that the best teacher for your child is and will be you, the parent.

Odysea Aquarium is the First Attraction in Arizona to be a certified autism center

BY K AR IN GALLO The International Board of Credentialing and Continued Education Standards (IBCCES) announced today that OdySea Aquarium is the first attraction – and aquarium – in Arizona to become a Certified Autism Center (CAC). The CAC designation, granted by IBCCES, means that visitors and families with children who have autism and other sensory differences can enjoy the best possible experience that caters to their needs. To achieve today’s CAC accreditation, OdySea Aquarium completed the critical training required

by IBCCES to recognize the needs of guests on the spectrum and provide necessary facility options for this demographic.

“We know families with children on the autism spectrum often find it challenging when choosing an attraction to visit,” said Greg Charbeneau, Vice President and General Manager at OdySea Aquarium. “Our mission to connect visitors with the wonders of the ocean has no exclusions. We have always made the necessary accommodations to make all guests as comfortable as possible – on every visit. This certification was a natural step for us as we continue to provide safe, engaging and memorable experiences for all of our guests.”

OdySea Aquarium, located in Scottsdale, AZ, is a multilevel, state-of-the-art facility featuring more than 65 exhibits and 370 species of animals. The helpful video follows a child with autism and his family as they travel through each area of the Aquarium, allowing others to know exactly what to expect on a visit. Being in the bright sunshine is kind of like being in the presence of light! *eyeroll The FDA is just now proposing that there may be risks of PABA and trolamine salicylate that outweigh their benefits.

Handy Dandy Flagstaff T H E W R I T E S T U F F BY G E R R Y J O H N S O N Money magazine is no more, at least in their printed form. They ceased publication in June of 2019. Apparently, they are still supporting their Money.com website. I probably glossed over this fact when they sent me an Email blurb.

I was totally surprised when I received my first edition of Kiplinger’s Money Smart Living magazine. Kiplinger’s has agreed to service Money’s subscriber base and probably the automatic renewal provision that came with my Money subscription.

So, this doesn’t really make me too mad. Kiplinger’s is a highly respected source, and in fact, I used to subscribe to their Newsletter years ago. I’ll gladly try it for a while and the worst-case scenario is that I cancel my subscription somewhere down the road.

Which brings me to the gist of this article. Kiplinger’s publishes a ‘best places to live in retirement’ segment, as did Money. The cool thing is that Flagstaff was listed as one of the best places for retirees to live.

I’m in Flagstaff for the summer (or Munds Park – 20 miles south), and it is really neat up here. I’m not a four seasons guy, so year-round living is not for me, but spring, summer and fall is great.

Here are some of the perks listed by Kiplinger’s in their August, 2019 edition: Flagstaff is nestled in a “sweet smelling” Ponderosa pine forest, The eclectic population derives from students, professionals and retirees, There are oodles of excellent dining opportunities, and award-winning craft breweries abound, Winnowing in and around Flagstaff is the urban trails system with over 130 miles of bike friendly trails, Skiing is literally one-half hour away at the Snow Bowl, The Grand Canyon is 90 minutes to the north by car, and, Northern Arizona University is smack dab in the middle of town, with all of its educational and service opportunities.

Housing isn’t particularly cheap. Single family, three-bedroom, two-bathroom homes go for about $500,000, according to the article. Condos and townhouses are available in the $200,00 to $300,000 range. Luxury apartments rent for $1,200 to $1,400 per month. Of course, to Californians this may seem like a windfall.

The Flagstaff Medical Center has a five-star rating from Medicare.

For me, the trek to Munds Park is less than two hours from Moon Valley, and Flagstaff is another 20 minutes. Phoenix, Las Vegas, Southern California are all very handy from Flagstaff.

Another article in the same edition suggests that if you are thinking of making a move in retirement, rent for a year. But, when you absolutely sold on the area, get with a local Realtor and explore your opportunities. First of all, get with a trusted mortgage loan officer and get pre-qualified.

First or second home, Flagstaff is a dandy place to live.

Don’t Medicate your Empathy Away

Taking acetaminophen (common brand name: Tylenol, but also found in a variety of multi-ingredient medications including Excedrin) may make you feel less pain (although it won’t address the cause of your pain), but it also may blunt your feelings in general, particularly empathy: the ability to feel or understand what another person is experiencing from their point of view, without the person having to tell you.

Empathy is an important quality because if you have it, it’s hard to be selfish.

After all, it means you’re considering someone else’s experience, feelings, emotions, etc., not just your own. Someone else actually matters, and that’s always a good thing in our increasingly me-centered world.

In a recent study involving 114 college students, researchers showed positive scenarios (a man proposing to his girlfriend, a woman getting a raise at her job, a woman’s father coming to her music recital, etc.) to students after administering either 1,000 mg of acetaminophen or an inactive pill (placebo).

Students who took acetaminophen experienced less pleasure and empathetic feelings toward the hypothetical characters in the scenarios compared with students who did not take acetaminophen, assessed by various tools that measured perceived positivity, perceived pleasure, personal pleasure and “otherdirected” empathetic feelings: the extent to which the participants felt sympathy, warmth, compassion, etc., based on the scenario viewed.

Published in Frontiers in Psychology, the study found that while acetaminophen use did not significantly reduce perceived positivity or perceived please, it did reduce personal pleasure and empathetic feelings compared to placebo.

So, is reducing your pain important enough to reduce your ability to feel or understand anyone else’s pain? We hope not, particularly when there are an abundance of nondrug methods available – such as chiropractic care – to combat back, neck, headache and various other types of pain. This also isn’t the first time acetaminophen has been associated with a negative health outcome which makes drug-free pain relief all the more important to your overall health and wellness. Family Trip to Alaska

BY L A R M O N H AU G E N My wife, Linda, and I went on our first Alaska cruise in 2012. Since then, we have wanted to share the beauty of Alaska with some of our family. That wish came true in June when we took our daughter, Heidi, her husband Craig Kilbourne, their son Brady and our son, Scott Haugen and his son Jared on a week-long Alaska cruise starting and ending in Seattle. We enjoyed cruising on the Norwegian Bliss, a large ship with around 4,000 passengers and 1,700 crew members. The Bliss is an amazing ship with unlimited activities, wonderful restaurants, a production of Jersey Boys and it even has a go-kart track.

Our ports of call included Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria, British Columbia.

Some highlights of the cruise included the Mendenhall Glacier and salmon bake near Juneau, drinks and dinner at the Red Dog Saloon in Juneau, gold panning and sled dogs, the White Pass railroad near Skagway and the Lumberjack show in Ketchikan. Also, cruising Glacier Bay for several hours with perfect weather really showed all of us the true beauty of Alaska.

Our evening stop in Victoria was fairly short but long enough for us to realize it is a very beautiful city. The Parliament Building is especially impressive at night as it is lit up by 3,000 lights. It would be nice to spend a few days there.

As part of this trip, we also spent a few days in Seattle and enjoyed several attractions including the Space Needle, Chihuly Glass Museum, Pike Place Market, a city tour, a harbor cruise and Wings over Washington. I also toured the Boeing Factory near Everett, Washington where some of the largest planes are built. The size of the factory building was incredible and we were told that Disneyland would fit in the building with room to spare!

Overall, we had a wonderful trip and it was extra special having some of the family with us. All of them have indicated they would definitely like to visit Alaska again.

Paula Cullison Receives the ‘Royal Treatment in the UAE

BY PAU L A C U L L I S O N Paula Cullison, a local international travel photographer and travel writer, was given the ‘royal treatment’ recently when she was invited to exhibit at the Ras Al Khaimah (United Arab Emirates) annual Art Festival.

Welcomed by His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Paula was one of 30 artists representing 12 countries. The red carpet opening for the event, held in the historic Al Hamra Village, was attended by 300 VIP guests (royal family members and ExPats); and later by over 1,000 members of the public.

Perhaps one needs to slow down a bit and remember the meaning of those dates. The sacrifices made so we can live in the comfort and freedoms we have. This country is not with our problems but look at the alternative! Our voice and effort can and do make a difference. Do you know your City Council representative? Do you know your District Representative? Do you know your Community Action Officer? And do you know your Block Captain? These are people that support us and take us to a level of unity admired by other communities. If we work together it does make a difference.

When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be in the uppermost and to the flag’s own right, that is, to the observer’s left. BY F R O S T Y K R O E N I N G Commander Tom Van Dorn, Black Mountain Police Precinct held a very informative conversation about what is happening in the Phoenix Police Department and in the Black Mountain Precinct. First, he noted that Police Chief Williams called officers together in response to the national and inter-national publicity of a shop-lifting arrest event in South Phoenix. Chief Williams asked the officers if they were angry that she apologized to the people who were affected by the police action and to the citizens of Phoenix. Many officers indicated that they were angry. Then, Chief Williams asked if the police response to the incident was their best work. The crowd answered, “No.” The third question was, “Are we going to make an effort to do better?” The response again was, “Yes.” (She couldn’t say much more about the case because there is an on-going investigation.)

Commander Van Dorn talked about the new body cameras police and associated staff will be wearing. Black Mountain Precinct officers will be using them starting in August when they are on duty and also when they are doing extra security work.

Issues of personal privacy and who can download the video content are being worked out. The videos are subject to Freedom of Information Act requests by citizens. The cameras are intended for two purposes: 1) monitor police actions on the job, and 2) monitor citizen behavior during police involvement. Citizens are reminded to be on their best behavior! Officers are excited about wearing the cameras because people will see what they deal with day-to-day. Commander Van Dorn will be reviewing tapes from our Precinct and only passing them on when certain criteria are met.

Seven new officers will be assigned to our precinct. Our crime statistics are down 19% from last year with perpetrated crime down 6% in places like the 19th Avenue and Bell Road. One officer is assigned to take incident statistics from neighborhoods and help the Commander target problem areas and deploy officers to find solutions.

Most incidents are crimes of opportunity like taking things out of unlocked cars.

There were many more topics discussed at the meeting which was held at The First Watch restaurant at I-17 and Carefree Highway. Commander Van Dorn reassured people by saying, “We will get though these challenging times by helping each other.” He reiterated that the Phoenix Police Department is one of the very best police departments in the nation. As an example of the commitment to citizens the Department has added 6 new citizen review positions to the disciplinary review and use of force boards. Candace, our Black Mountain Citizen Association Board President, is one of those appointees.

Commander Van Dorn gave us some additional good news. The new Fire Chief is a woman who has been good friends with Police Chief Jerry Williams since childhood. Together with the active and concerned City Council members, they strive to continue working on excellent policing and fire protection in Phoenix.

There will be no Coffee With a Cop meeting in August. The next scheduled BMCA meeting will be at the Deer Valley Community Center, 2001 West Wahalla Lane September 11, 2019. The topic will be Homeland Security and Emergency Response.

Moon Valley Summer Updates

BY BRET ALDIERI, MVNA PRESIDENT We are in the full heat of summer and monsoon season has begun. Please stay aware of weather conditions that can change rapidly, especially as our community has large trees that can shed or break during the high winds of Monsoon storms. Hopefully many of you have found ways to escape the summer heat, either to the mountains in the north or the beach to our west.

It’s not too late to sign up for 2019 membership and Security for the low, low price of $120! In addition to normal Security patrols, our Security Service will perform daily vacation home checks while you are away. It provides a nice peace of mind that someone is keeping an eye on your home for any security issues, water pipe leaks, or any other abnormal activity. Please utilize our on-line website or send us a check to get enrolled today!

Moon Valley GAIN. We are just starting to plan our 2019 GAIN event and welcome community volunteers to participate. Please send us an email if interested. We have a tentative date of Oct 12th to be held in the MVCC parking lot; will confirm shortly. We will update in our weekly news blast.

Moon Valley water solution. While the Canal water pipeline project was completed in May/June, the Club has struggled to take advantage of this lower cost water. MVCC has experienced on-course piping issues and some pump failures. This has resulted in lower water levels in the ponds at 17/18, and is likely also impacting the Club’s ability to fully irrigate the golf course. We are hearing these issues are being addressed and should be rectified soon.

MVCC property conditions. I’ve heard from neighbors expressing concern regarding the MVCC property conditions. Chris Baker, Moon Valley resident, is leading a group of concerned neighbors who live on the Moon Walk golf course, and in fact have organized under the name Moon Walk Neighbors Association as an entity to address the situation. Resident property appearance. Most of our community takes great pride to keeping their homes and properties attractive. This is one of the expectations to being a good neighbor. However, our board continues to receive complaints on properties that either are not being properly maintained or have large RVs, Boats or Trailers parked in their yard. Our community has CCRs that we all must abide by – and you can find your specific version via our website.

In addition, the City of Phoenix has laws regarding property maintenance, parking of vehicles off driveway and other activities. We don’t enjoy asking people to bring their properties back in compliance, so I ask here – please be a good Moon Valley neighbor and think about how your property appearance may affect your neighbors.

Now Back at Moon Valley Chiropractic

With sweltering temperatures and summer in full swing, it’s hard to imagine that its already time for school to start. And while there’s not much relief from the heat, there is some relief for parents and kids returning to school who are fretting about how they are going to supply the basics needed for that return.

Every year, the Moon Valley Chapter of National Charity League, Inc. (NCL, Inc.) supports the Back to School Clothing Drive, a charity that provides new school uniforms and outfits, backpacks and school supplies to elementary students who are living below poverty level and attending Title 1 public schools.

This year, NCL, Inc. kicked off the summer by helping pack dental kits for Back to School Clothing Drive’s corporate Backpack Stuffing Events. Several girls and their moms also attended the Back to School Clothing Drive Golden Masquerade Gala held at the Phoenix Art Museum. The gala fundraiser featured a silent auction where NCL volunteers helped setup and monitor the auction area.

The summer wrapped up with a week-long event in July where more than 9,500 students took part in the 2019 New Clothes, New Beginnings Annual Distribution event. Each student is assigned a personal shopper to help select new school outfits, personal hygiene items and a backpack filled with school supplies.

During the event, many NCL, Inc. volunteers can be seen checking students in and out, handing out clothing and supplies and guiding kids through dental screenings.

These and other events allow economically disadvantaged students to shift their focus from areas of need to what’s truly important – their education.

The members of NCL’s Moon Valley Chapter especially enjoy working directly with these kids during the July distribution event because they can see firsthand the impact of their work. Although the chapter works with over 20 different philanthropy partners throughout the year, many members cite this organization as their favorite. In fact, last year the Moon Valley chapter logged more than 1,500 volunteer hours with this philanthropy alone!

NCL, Inc. is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong mother-daughter relationships through community service, leadership development, and cultural experiences.

Members include girls ranging from 7th to 12th grade along with their mothers. The member application process begins in November the year prior to when membership is desired. Thunderbirds Charities provide Generous Funding for Family & Unaccompanied Shelter residents

BY CASSIDY PENNEY UMOM New Day Centers, Arizona’s innovative leader in shelter, services, and housing for families, single women, and youth experiencing homelessness, has received a generous gift from the Thunderbird Charities. The $300,000 donation will provide critical programming assistance for families and unaccompanied youth as they rebuild their lives to end their homelessness.

In addition to emergency shelter, UMOM focuses programs and services on each individual to ensure barriers to employment and stable housing are addressed. Examples of programs and services include education and employment assistance, childcare, housing assistance, utility and rent deposits, work tools and uniforms, bus passes or gas cards to get to and from work or school, and more, depending on the need.

“We value our partnership with Thunderbirds Charities and the support they provide for those in need in our community,” said Darlene Newsom, UMOM CEO. “The recent Thunderbirds Charities donation will go a long way to improving the programs and the reach of the families we serve.”

Moon Valley Women’s Club Celebrates 50 Years Moon Valley Women’s Club is a social and service club founded in 1970. We have over 225 members of all ages. Within the MVWC there are 30 activity groups open to members.

Join now and attend our September luncheon. Members, their guests and prospective members are invited to join us for the first luncheon of the year.

This luncheon will be held at the Moon Valley Country Club on September 12th.

The Back to School Checklist

New wardrobe for the 2-inch growth spurt this summer – check.

New backpack, pencils, paper, notebooks, crayons – check.

Fresh haircut – check.

Sport’s physical, immunization boosters – check.

Healthy mouth – um, really?

There is a great deal to prepare for the back-to-school season and oral health care should be on that list. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among school age children. In fact, every year millions of school hours are missed by kids suffering from dental emergencies. While it is extremely common, dental disease is also highly preventable.

Brushing teeth at least twice a day is still one of the best ways to prevent tooth decay. Using an electric/mechanical toothbrush is a good choice. Used properly, it does a better job of cleaning teeth than manual toothbrushes. Look for one that includes a two-minute timer, so it stays on for the amount of time dentists recommend teeth be brushed. That makes it easier for kids to get a thorough cleaning each time they brush.

Children should start flossing as soon as possible. Flossing is the best way to remove food and plaque from between teeth, especially the back teeth, as they tend not to brush as well in those areas as they do for the front teeth. Parents will likely need to assist a child with flossing until age 10.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends sealants for all school-age children. A sealant is a protective coating, applied by a dental professional, to the chewing surface of back teeth, sealing off grooves that tend to collect food and protecting tooth enamel.

A dental exam and cleaning should be on everyone’s back-to-school checklist.

Determining your Adjectives B Y K AT H L E E N V I C K Greetings, Readers!

Last time I discussed the importance of reflecting YOU in your personal space and I would like to explore that a bit more today.

Imagine that you are in a museum or a gallery and are looking at a painting that is presented in the best possible manner. The matt that directly surrounds the painting brings out the colors in it; the frame enhances its appearance and the wall that the painting is hung on is a color that really completes the whole picture.

Everything is perfectly in harmony with the painting as the center of attention.

Now consider yourself in this context. You are the painting and the clothing & accessories that you choose to wear bring out your skin color, your eye color and shows off your body form to its best possible advantage—just as the matt does for the artwork. The rooms that you inhabit “frame” you with colors, fabrics and furnishings that enhance your appearance (and personality). Finally, the view out the windows to your landscape is the finishing touch that brings everything to one comprehensive package.

Another way of thinking about it is like throwing a stone into a body of water; the ripples that are formed surrounding the stone’s point of entry spread the energy outward. That’s how you should think of your built, and natural, environment.

You are the centerpiece and everything surrounding you visually reinforces you.

So, now the question is: how does someone create the environment that enhances oneself? I have found that it begins with defining oneself with some precise adjectives.

For example, are you; energetic, whimsical and bohemian or are you: exacting, disciplined and logical?

If you are married, you should each determine 2 adjective for yourselves and 1 adjective for you as a couple (5 adjectives in total). Do not concern yourself if they conflict; that is what will make for an interesting—and truthful—design result as it does for your relationship.

In the next series of columns I will address how to take those adjectives and translate them into a design solution.

DAnce-a-thon is a Virtual funDraiser that lets you dance with the stars

BY BOWEN LARSEN An event of dancing, music, food, face painting, games and plenty of action may sound like one of the Valley’s music festivals, but it’s all happening at Civitan Foundation’s Annual Dance-A-Thon on Friday, September 20 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Dance-A-Thon is an annual fundraising event with an online component to help Civitan expand programs and services that enhance the quality of life for children and adults with developmental disabilities.

The dance is being held at Gateway Academy, located at 3939 E. Shea Boulevard in Phoenix. The dance is open to all groups, individuals and corporate teams. Participants may either dance for fun with our community of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, sponsor a dancer or a team, or help fundraise on behalf of Civitan by creating an online Fun-raiser dancer page.

There is a $10 donation requested at the door if not pre-registered as a Fun-raiser.

“The idea of having a Dance-A-Thon was a no-brainer,” said Civitan Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer Dawn Trapp. “Our members love to dance, so we designed an event that we all like to do, will be fun and hopefully generate a lot of support from our community for people with developmental disabilities.”

To help fundraise for this event, participants register on Civitan Foundation’s website, www.civitanfoundationaz.com/dance-a-thon/ and share their Fun-raiser page with family and friends. It’s also an opportunity for businesses to form teams for group team-building or as an organizational community fundraiser.

College sororities and fraternities, as well as high school groups and leadership groups, are also encouraged to participate and register for the Dance-A-Thon.

Fun-raiser participants for the Dance-A-Thon are eligible to win prizes by the amount of money they raise. Prizes range from Dance-A-Thon party glasses to a catered lunch for up to 15 people. Top Fun-raisers are eligible for a chance to win a two-night stay at Trapper’s Rendezvous Bed and Breakfast in Williams.

The Dance-A-Thon is free for all special needs organizations and special

education programs. Food is available for purchase, catered by the Cook-er-y, Civitan Foundation’s vocational job training and employment program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Funds raised by the Dance-A-Thon will help purchase needed equipment and expand programs and services Civitan provides for more than 1,400 people each year throughout the state of Arizona.

Since 1968, Civitan has enhanced the quality of life for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Today, Civitan Foundation provides services throughout the Phoenix metro area, Williams and Maricopa. Services in Williams include the 15-acre fully accessible Camp Civitan, an adult day program and Civitan on 66 Boutique thrift-store. In Phoenix, programs include the Civitan Village Adult Life Learning Center, the Respite Ranch, Flerish Design & Resale thrift store and Group Supported Employment programs. Civitan also offers an adult day program in Maricopa and Home & Community Based Services statewide.
