7th Street Brew Crew Teams Up with Team Jaydie
Moon Valley Magic Lies in the Neighborhood M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C BY D EB B IE ER BS TO E SSER Wass’up in the hood? I missed the last deadline getting situated at work in my new position as the Gifted Specialist. I had to move across campus and as of this moment still have boxes to unpack, in mid September! The deadline is about 2 weeks before the paper goes out, so it’s actually not even October yet and we all know the Holidays begin with Halloween. I haven’t made or bought a single Christmas present and am feeling a little stressed about that. With the impending Season approaching I’ve also been thinking about what to get and where to shop. I do try to stay as close to home as possible, not only to keep the money locally in our neighborhood, but close by so the taxes stay here too. Recently Gary & I have been trying out the local restaurants. Three of them participated in Thunderbird High School’s football fundraiser. Soup and Sausage, Barros (pronounced “borrow” just ask them), and Aiello’s make buying one of the coupon cards well worth it. All of them are terrific. If you turned away a Tbird football player, you missed out. I usually buy two or more of those cards and make
money back every time we use them. Moon Valley Grill advertises with the football team’s program, saving patrons money after the games. There are many businesses right here in the ‘hood for breakfast, lunch, dinner, hair, nails, shopping, shoe repair, dry cleaning, pool supply, exercise. . .the list goes on. Anytime Fitness was again voted ‘Neighborhood Favorite’ for the 3rd year and is owned and managed by Moon Valley residents Bill and Barb Nicholls. The Pool Supply store in the same shopping center is owned by Richard, a chemist, so he really knows his chemicals. I shop Amazon like most everyone else, but when I can keep it here in the ‘hood I do because I know it helps to keep our friends and neighbors in business. The deadline in November will mark the 11th year that I’ve been writing Moon Valley Magic, minus a month here and there when I was too busy, on vacation, post-op or my computer crashed. When I didn’t know what to write about, I’d say a prayer and within a few hours I had an idea. Every time I say that I’m about done doing this I catch flack, so I keep at it.

Our coffee house has started a donation basket for Phoenix Children’s Hospital, in partnership with Cami King & Team Jaydie. This started out as a very personal project. I have run several half-marathons for St. Jude's and Alex's Lemonade Stand, while raising thousands of dollars towards finding a cure for childhood cancer. I've known Cami King for almost 10 years now - our children are both seniors at Thunderbird. We have volunteered each December to help with wrapping gifts that are donated for the annual Adopt A Family Program. Cami's eldest daughter passed away from DIPG, a 100 percent fatal brain stem tumor, so this is a very passionate cause for her providing much needed items for families experiencing the trials of cancer. When I became a partner at Starbucks, I wanted to get the 7th Street Brew Crew involved with the Moon Valley community. Giving back to the community is a very important part of the Starbucks mission, and helping Team Jaydie was a perfect fit. My goal is to collect items that Cami knows are high demand pieces early enough in the season to help offset stress that comes with on gathering items in November. These families have enough to worry about and the holidays shouldn't be one of them. Stop by 7th St & Thunderbird to drop off goods like shampoo, grocery gift cards, towels, craft projects & more.

Boo!
What’s not to love about Fall? Football, apples, cool mornings, and the opportunity to actually be outside. The stores are filled with pumpkins, wreaths, goblins, and lots of Halloween candy! My crockpot is full most every weekend, testing and trying new recipes, filling bellies and warming hearts. I love Fall, the next 3 months are some of the best of the year… So hurry pick up the candy, light your fire pits, and get ready to enjoy the festivities. Have fun and be safe.
Halloween is the holiday that brings out the kid and creative nature in most all of us. It’s the time of year we start bringing out the sweatshirts, sweaters, and leggings we’ve been dying to wear for the past sweltering months. When I opened the door last Saturday morning, dreading the heat while preparing for a golf tournament, I was pleasantly surprised by a little “nip” in the air. The 100’s had finally broke and the change of seasons in Phoenix is upon us!

Phoenix Teens Help Encircle Arizona in Tangible Demonstration of Hope BY JESSICA GONZALES Valley high schools created more than 12,800 handwritten messages to help encircle the Arizona State Capitol building in a tangible demonstration of hope during Teen Suicide Prevention Awareness Month this past September. The messages of hope were written on strips of paper and turned into paper chains. Joined together, these chains reach more than 3,220 feet in length, the equivalent of more than one-half mile. The messages provide encouragement to fellow students who may be struggling with depression, anxiety, thoughts of suicide or just having a bad day. “Research shows that feelings of hope and connection are protective factors that can prevent teen suicide,” says Michelle Moorhead, Teen Lifeline executive director. “By writing a message of hope on each link of a paper chain, we are literally and figuratively creating connections that show our teens they are not alone.” To help encourage positive connections on high school campuses in Maricopa County, Teen Lifeline challenged high schools to a competition to create the most messages of hope.
Four Phoenix high schools participated, creating more than 4,600 links in the chain. A sponsorship from Mercy Care made the competition possible. North Canyon High School students worked together to create more than 1,200 messages of hope for fellow students struggling with thoughts of suicide. The High School is located at 16th Street and Union Hills. “We’re so proud of these students for reaching out to their peers like this,” said Lorry Bottrill, President and CEO of Mercy Care. “We’ve heard over and over, at suicide prevention and awareness trainings for hundreds of school personnel throughout the Valley, that these types of connections make a real difference for young people who may be at risk.” Schools were invited to a special ceremony to encircle the Arizona Capitol Building with the Connections of Hope Paper Chain on Tues., Sept. 17. Schools are encouraged to display their Connections of Hope Paper Chains in areas where students can remove a link and take a message of hope with them on especially difficult days. Fueling our future Entreprenuers: Inaugural Moon Valley Children’s Business Fair B Y M A R K S TA N L E Y COULD A TEN-YEAR-OLD INVENT THE NEXT ÜBER? Find out at the Moon Valley Children’s Business Fair, showcasing kids’ entrepreneurial genius! On Saturday, November 16th from 10am to 1pm, the 1st annual Moon Valley Children’s Business Fair will host 75 young entrepreneurs at Moon Valley Park. This event is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Kids create a product or service, develop a brand, build a marketing strategy, and then open for customers at this one-day marketplace. The children are responsible for the setup, sales, and interacting with customers, and any parent seen selling to the customer or promoting the child’s product will result in disqualification from the competition. Jeff and Laura Sandefer and a few other families wanted to spark a sense of wonder and entrepreneurship in their children so they created the first Acton Children’s Business Fair in Austin, Texas, in 2007. That year, there were seven entrepreneurs and around 25 attendees. Now, there are over 115 entrepreneurs and 1,500 attendees at the Acton Children’s Business Fair in Austin. Mark Stanley is now bringing the children’s business fair model to Moon Valley, providing a platform for our very own students to spread their business wings. Such entreprenuers have already stepped up to the plate, with the Moon Valley Children’s Business Fair having approved over 40 children-run businesses. “Children’s business fairs inspires children to discover their inner entrepreneur. This one-day market gives children the opportunity to showcase their very own businesses,” explains Mark Stanley. This event is sponsored by Acton Academy, the Acton School of Business, and the generous support of local businesses like Cactus Flowers, Moon Valley

Tattler, NLV, and Mountain Sky PTO, plus numerous volunteers, who all believe that principled entrepreneurs are heroes and role models for the next generation. “When I heard about the Moon Valley Children’s Business Fair, I knew we had to jump on board. Our youth are so important to the future of Moon Valley and the global economy - I want to foster projects and events like this that serve as a springboard for our children to their next passions,” states Hana Ruzsa of Moon Valley Tattler. Whether an entrepreneur is famous, like Elon Musk or Oprah Winfrey, or one of the thousands of unsung business owners across this country, these entrepreneurs are the people who make sacrifices to innovate, create jobs, and serve their communities. “Today’s youth are tomorrow’s business innovators and leaders. The Children’s Business Fair gives students the opportunity to spread their entrepreneurial wings and get a head start on promising business careers,” said Jeff Sandefer, founder of the Acton School of Business, one of the sponsors of the fair. Not only is the fair a chance for our children to engage in business, but it’s also a chance for fun and reward. Awards will be presented in each of the three age groups (6-8, 9-11, and 12-14) for “Most Business Potential,” “Most Creative Idea,” and “Most Impressive Presentation.” Applications are being accepted until November 1st for children-run businesses. A $20 fee is required for each business registered. Please visit https:// www.childrensbusinessfair.org/phoenix-moonvalley to submit.

Estate planning for incapacity B Y L I B B Y B A N K S , P L L C , E S TAT E P L A N N I N G In my previous article I have reminded you that estate planning isn’t just about who will get your assets on your death, it’s also about who will manage your assets and take care of you and your financial affairs if you become incapacitated. With proper planning, you decide; without proper planning a court may get to make the choice. What do we mean by “incapacitated?” Generally speaking, we are referring to a situation where you are unable to make decisions for yourself. Incapacity can result from an accident or arise from health issues, such as stroke, heart attack or dementia. If you are alive but can’t take care of your financial matters, a Will doesn’t help you – it’s only effective upon your death. You may have a power of attorney in place and believe this planning tool will effectively handle your affairs. But a power of attorney in Arizona only goes so far and often they are poorly written. Many clients who bring in their estate planning documents for review show me a power of attorney that is barely better than nothing at all. If there is a problem with your power of attorney, or you don’t have one, or someone that holds your assets (like a bank) will not accept what you have signed, a probate court will have to appoint someone to manage those assets for you. While you would probably prefer that your spouse or life partner manage your assets if you become incapacitated, the court will decide who will act for you. This can be a very big issue for unmarried couples. While the court may appoint your partner, it could also appoint a relative, and that may be the last thing you want or need. For a single person, it isn’t always obvious who should be appointed. And if the obvious choice is a sibling or an adult child who is terrible with finances, you certainly don’t want that person handling your money and property while you are incapacitated! The public proceedings to have someone appointed are called guardianship and conservatorship. It can be expensive, embarrassing, time consuming, and difficult to end. It does not replace probate at death so unless you plan ahead, Dinner Hours Sunday thru Thursday 11a until 10p Friday & Saturday 11a until 11p

What do we do to plan for incapacity? The best way is with a Revocable Living Trust. When you set up a Revocable Living Trust, you transfer assets from your name to the name of your trust where you control them as the trustee. You name whoever you wish to take over as successor trustee upon incapacity and at death. That person steps into your shoes to take care of your financial affairs, without a court appointing them, without court intervention, and without the court making decisions about how your money is spent. If and when you recover, you resume your role as trustee of your trust. The Revocable Living Trust is a great way to address incapacity and works hand in hand with your durable financial power of attorney. The Revocable Living Trust: Is readily accepted by financial institutions provides detailed instructions and directions holds a successor trustee to a high fiduciary standard allows your successor trustee to quickly and efficiently begin managing your assets to care for you and your finances But what about your health care decisions if you are unable to make them because of incapacity? You need three additional documents to assure you will be taken care of by those you want to be the decision makers. Those documents, called advance medical directives, include a Healthcare Power of Attorney (sometimes also called a Health Care Proxy), a Living Will or advance end of life directive, and a HIPAA Authorization. These documents work together to allow your chosen person to direct your health care if you become incapacitated. These are important documents for every adult to have. If you have these documents, wonderful! But be sure you are keeping them up to date. It’s a good idea to review your estate plan periodically and make sure it still meets your needs and desires, and is not so old that a healthcare provider will challenge whether they are still valid. Take advantage of my complimentary review or initial consultation. I can be reached at 602-375-6752, or through my website, www.LibbyBanks.com.

What Holds the wheels to the frame?
Color B Y K AT H L E E N V I C K Greetings, Readers! In my last column I introduced the principles of design: Unity, harmony and contrast. Now I’m going to begin to explain the elements of design. There are many but this time I will discuss “color” since it is one that everyone most likely deals with on a day-to-day basis. Many women begin their days by applying makeup and we all pick out the clothing we are going to wear that day. Yes, color plays a major role in our lives. Sadly, many people know very much about the attributes of color and how to select just the right one. Hopefully, this information will help you. Color has 3 attributes: hue, value and intensity. Hue is the actual name of the color; all of the millions of hues can be created only by mixing one hue with another hue. There are three primary hues: red, yellow and blue. (White and black are not hues; they are only mixing devices that create tints and shades). Mixing red with yellow creates orange. Mixing yellow with blue creates green and mixing blue with red creates purple. Those are the secondary hues. Mixing a primary and a secondary creates a teriary. Value is the lightness or darkness of a color and they can be created by adding white to make a tint or adding black to make a shade. For example, adding white to red creates pink (which is actually a tint of red) and adding black to red creates a maroon (which is actually a shade of red). Intensity is the brightness of a color and is the most difficult to understand. It is manipulated by adding the compliment (opposite) hue to a hue. For example, say you have a “knock –your-eyeballs-out yellow” (very bright and high energy) and you want to dull it a bit but you do not want to lighten or darken it—you just want to take the edge off, adding a smidge of purple will “soften” the yellow. A neutral is actually created when the two compliments are in balance. (By the way grey is not a neutral. Grey is only a blend of white and black.) In my next column I will discuss what the various colors mean and how they can be employed to convey your personality.
BY LEON, TRY ME BICYCLE SHOP Dropouts are the slotted metal pieces welded or glued to the fork and frame of the bicycle. They are made of steel or aluminum. They are stamped out by the millions they are important to the ride an safety of the bike. Many better bikes have forged dropouts they are stronger less likely to crack or break . In the old days derailers were threaded into the right side dropout. Now there is a break away hanger that is bolted on. Should the derailer go into the spokes of the wheel because of miss adjustment or accident. There are about 175 different hangers making for a tuff if the right one can’t be found. Chiropractic for Low Back Pain: Cooking up some culture with NCL BY BRITTANY NELSON Your Best, 1st Recommendation One of the central pillars of National Charity League, Inc. (NCL, Inc.) is culture. Every class is BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER, CMT DC
Numerous studies have shown chiropractic spinal manipulation is effective for low back pain, which is good news considering you only have a small chance of avoiding LBP during the course of your lifetime. In fact, it’s estimated that at least eight in 10 people will suffer low back pain at some point, many of whom will experience it on multiple occasions or even chronically. Now here’s even better news: Evidence suggests chiropractic spinal manipulation is as effective as commonly recommended treatment options such as pain medication for LBP, which should make it your best, first recommendation, particularly in light of the prescription opioid crisis killing more than 100 Americans a day. In a new review study, published in the British Medical Journal, researchers evaluated findings from 47 previous investigations involving more than 9,000 men and women (average age: 3560 years). All studies compared the value of spinal manipulative therapy with recommended therapies including nonsteroidial anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs; Aleve, Motrin, etc.), prescription painkillers and exercise. Spinal manipulation relieved LBP as effectively as the recommended therapies and was actually more effective in improving short-term function. Spinal manipulation still isn’t routinely recommended as a primary treatment for low back pain, despite evolving guidelines in the U.S. and worldwide. The opioid epidemic has opened eyes to the need for safer pain-relief options, but so far, the recommendations don’t go far enough. Why take pain medication and risk the side effects, some of which can be life-threatening, when you can enjoy the benefits of chiropractic spinal manipulation and achieve the same pain relief and functional improvements? Talk to your doctor to learn more.
required to host an event each year where they are experiencing some aspect of culture, whether it be related to art, food or another concept. Since we are all seniors getting ready to go off to college, the NCL Moon Valley Chapter Class of 2020 recently attended a cooking class together. The menu featured simple recipes we could make in a college dorm kitchen, helping us prepare for what is to come while providing a fun, bonding experience. According to senior Susie Papadopoulos, “It was a great time, and we learned some delicious but simple recipes. I think our whole class really enjoyed it.” During the class, we learned how to make three simple dishes as well as some basic cutting techniques. The two chef instructors supervised us dicing onions, chopping herbs and cutting peppers. They also taught us how to execute the rock method for chopping up herbs. We learned how to make stuffed chicken rolls, which was very simple and used ingredients that are easy and inexpensive. Each girl got to make her own stuffed chicken roll. Next, we learned a lesson in economics: how to use leftover ingredients to make a vegetable sauté. We then made a cheese sauce to put on those vegetables and made couscous to add a grain to the meal. It was surprisingly simple and utilized ingredients that most people already have in their kitchen. The chefs really made sure that we learned how to make the food by having us do all the cooking. It didn’t take much time, but we made enough food to last at least two weeks! The chefs sent each of us home with a packet of tips and tricks to help budget for food in college. Preparing meals in bulk was one of the easy tips we could incorporate into our lives. They also taught us to not go grocery shopping when we are hungry because we are more likely to buy items that we don’t need. Senior Megan Bladine said, “This class was very insightful. They taught us useful information that we can use to help save us money in college. It also helped us realize that eating healthy isn’t really that expensive”. Overall, it was a great learning experience and group bonding time that helped prepare us for the future.

Always Home: Moon Valley
BY NANCY SANFORD
“What religion are you? What religion are you?” I was 8 years old and had just arrived from Boston to our new home in Moon Valley in 1975. The moving truck was still in our front yard. Turns out my Catholic family of 5 bought a home in a neighborhood that was mostly all Mormon. What a beautiful integration it became. Those kids asking me those questions initially grew MacDonald Siblings: Nancy, Kevin, Rob, Suzanne & Katie up to be our best friends. There were 10 kids across the street from us, 5 on the corner, 5 next door to that one. Kids were running back and forth across the street all day. We danced, swam, made
up plays - just non-stop fun. My mom went on to have my 2 sisters in that home and never cooked a meal for 2 weeks following. We all grew and went off our separate ways, but those beautiful childhood experiences impacted my life forever. Fast forward, my 3 adult children grew up with me singing them a beautiful Mormon lullaby. My parents still live in their exact same home. Kitchen & Bath Trends BY TOM SER TICH, K IRK DE VELOPMENT Design trends come and go frequently, so the best idea is to select those designs that work best for you and your family. Kitchens and bathrooms are the heart of the house so most decisions will be made according to lifestyle. Do your homework to ensure you’re getting what you are expecting. 1. Colors – White and grey have generally been popular. It is now trending to make your kitchen or bathroom more interesting by making the room colorful by purchasing hardware (pulls and knobs) to show your personality. Mirrors, cabinet styles and plumbing fixtures can add a new touch to a boring kitchen and bathroom. 2. Technology – Smart kitchens are changing at such a fast rate, it is hard to keep up. New appliances and special features can be added to most existing kitchens. There is such a wide variety, you will need to make sure your selections work best for your
lifestyle. Of course there are those features that make working in the kitchen more fun. 3. Lighting - There are basically three types of lighting for your home. General lighting provides overall lighting for a specific room. Accent lighting draws your attention to a specific object or area. Task lighting provides lighting to perform specific tasks in the house. Task lighting can be used for food preparation, reading and at the vanity area. 4. Countertops – Quartz is still high on the list for most home owners. New colors have been introduced and quartz is not porous which makes it easy for cleanup. Granite is also a good option and has a variety of colors. Put your own personality into the selection process. Who wants Witch’s Teeth? BY M E L A N I E S I M C H A K H U L L , D D S
Snaggletooth. Riddled with unsightly holes. Green and black in color. What images pop to mind when you think of witch’s teeth? While some trickor-treaters might wear a prosthetic mouthpiece to create this iconic look for Halloween, no one wants to flash this smile daily. Here are 5 tips to help keep your little trick-or-treater cavity free. 1. Avoid candy snacking throughout the day to limit the amount of time sugar is in contact with the teeth. 2. Steer away from sticky candies like sugared fruit snacks and caramels that expose the teeth to sugar over longer periods of time. 3. Eat a small amount of candy in one sitting, followed by a glass of water or a thorough tooth brushing and flossing. 4. Gum and candy containing xylitol have been shown to help prevent tooth decay. 5. Consider donating the candy leftovers. If your trick-or-treater comes home with a massive haul of sweets, this could lead to multiple days or weeks of daily candy binges. Many locations, like Dental Home, will accept candy donations and will send the treats to our troops. We will also include toothbrushes and floss. We want our troops to have healthy teeth too! If you would like to participate, please bring your candy to our office at 720 E. Thunderbird Road, Nov 4 – 7 between 7am and 5pm. Have a Happy and Healthy Halloween!
9 out of 10 Suffer with Headaches BY DR . JAME Y REICHOW
14 October 2019 | The Moon Valley Tattler
Research has shown that nine out of ten Americans suffer from headaches. Headaches sufferers tend to have a widespread presentation of their symptoms: occasional, frequent, constant, daily, weekly or monthly along with dull, sharp, shooting, throbbing, sometimes causing debilitating pain and nausea. Clinical studies have shown that 95% of headaches are primary headaches. Primary headaches include tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches. Primary headaches are not caused by disease but the headache themselves are the chief concern. The greatest majority of primary headaches are associated with muscle tension in the neck. Today, we engage in more sedentary activities than we used to, and more hours are spent in one fixed position or posture. This can increase joint irritation and muscle tension in the neck, upper back and scalp, causing your head to ache. The many suffering from headaches deal with them in many different ways. Some push through it, others seek solace, or take over-the-counter pills or even prescriptions. However, there is a better, more effective and less invasive alternative when dealing with headaches! A report released by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that chiropractic spinal manipulations resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication. The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that spinal manipulative therapy is an effective treatment for tension headaches and that those who ceased chiropractic treatment after four weeks experienced a sustained therapeutic benefit in contrast with those patients who received a commonly prescribed medication. In addition to the chiropractic adjustments, headache sufferers should drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water daily, engage in walking and low impact exercise, and if you are spending extended periods of time in one position-take breaks and stretch the neck every half hour to an hour. Also, avoiding caffeine, soda, chocolate, high salt and high protein diets can be helpful in eliminating triggers of headaches. Stop suffering! If you have any questions about headaches-contact Moon Valley Chiropractic. To Health!

As soon as you step into Chrysalis Lash Studio, you enter a relaxing boho-mid-mod haven. The décor is as deliciously gorgeous as it is inspirational. And now the fun part starts – you get to work with Dana. Dana Devane is an amazing woman entrepreneur, who single handedly runs her natural beauty enhancing studio off Cave Creek and Greenway. Her relaxed personality mixed with a retro aesthetic and contagious laugh and smile instantly comforts you, and you recognize that you are in great hands! From eyelash extension to all
natural, vegan spray tans, Dana believes in accentuating our already present beauty, “Enhancing natural beauty is what I love to do. Every womanand man- who walks into my studio is already beautiful. My goal is simply to maintain the health of everyone’s lashes and skin through my all natural, plant derived techniques, while elevating what already exists on my clients.” -Dana Devane
giving every client that extra confidence boost to take on the world. She loves helping the busy Moon Valley mom who wants a wake-up-and-go look, or the older clientele who want to revive their skin tone or get a perfect, no-fuss brow. Client services run the gamut of eyelash extensions or lifts and tints if that is more your speed, microblading and henna brows, hair extensions, and
of course spray tanning. “A lot of folks are used to the idea of the spray booth that gives a less than desirable orange skin, but that is far from what I offer,” explains Dana. “I consult each client. We determine what scars they would like to defocus, disguise age spots, even overall skintone, and blur cellulite. All of my spray tans are plant derived, vegan-friendly, and made with organic ingredients.” When getting a spray tan, there is a private, comfortable room in the studio where you’re greeted by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. You feel like a movie star as Dana provides a completely custom treatment. Her spray tanning is also perfect for brides as there is a clear solution that does not rub off, so no fear of staining. Plus, her mobile spray tanning makes for a great bridal party solution to treat your ladies, and the bride is free. As a melanoma survivor herself, Dana added spray tanning to her studio services to help others avoid the harmful UV-induced tans that lead to cancer. “Any tan color is doable for my clients and it is absolutely safe. I do not want to hear of another person getting melanoma.” C elebr at i n g her one year shop-iversary this month, Dana is offering 25% off services for the whole of October. On Saturday October 5th from 5-8pm, you can party at Chrysalis Lash Studio, get to know Dana yourself, and support a local shop by scheduling your appointment. boys team charity North Valley League BY PAT R I C K R A M O N A N D A DA M G AU T H I E R C L A S S O F 2025 On Sunday, September,15th we went to Chase Field to where we held our General Meeting and had the opportunity to listen to Josh Rawitch, the Diamondbacks Senior VP of Content and Communications. Throughout his entirety of college, he was an intern for the LA Dodgers. After he finished college, a full time job opened up for the team and he got that. He worked for them for 15 years and then joined the Arizona Diamondbacks- his dream job! Two of the life lessons he told us he learned over the course of his career is to be on time and to do things right. Josh also said that his favorite player and person he ever worked with was Luis Gonzalez. His reasoning behind this is that he did, and still does, treat everyone like they matter. His favorite current player to work with is Eduardo Escobar. The reason he loves working with him so much is because he always is looking for ways to give back, even if it is after a ten-day road trip and he hasn’t seen his family in a while. Eduardo always looks for schools and hospitals to visit because he loves helping children and families. The D-Backs give back to the community in many ways. Josh told us that in the team’s existence, they have raised over $65,000,000 that they have donated to local services. One of the ways they do this is bringing players to schools and hospitals to comfort and help out kids. Another thing the do is a 50/50 raffle to give to the community and various charities. The Diamondbacks also sponsor all little leagues in the state of Arizona that apply, which helps offset the costs for families so their kids can play baseball. boys team charity North Valley League collectively donated $1,145 in Fry’s gift cards at this meeting, in support of our btc Initiative, “Feed the
Hungry”. The cards we donated to the Arizona Association of Food Banks and will assist in the battle against child hunger in the state of Arizona. Angie, the representative at our meeting from the association told us that “one in four children in the state of Arizona suffer from hunger issues, so this money will go a long way to assist as needed. “. Also, so far this calendar year, btc North Valley has done a total of 1,700 hours of community service. Josh’s favorite quote is the following: “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” By Jackie Robinson. boys team charity is a classic example of this quote, and we look forward to serving our community in the years to come. boys team charity North Valley is a volunteer service organization dedicated to developing an altruistic spirit in young men through active participation by parents and sons in philanthropic projects in their communities. For more information on our League, please visit our website: btcnorthvalley.chapterweb.net or check out our facebook page: @btcnorthvalley

As I frequently walk my dog about the neighborhood and meet people, I still get that many don’t know about our annual G.A.I.N event. It’s a family fun event planned in concert with the City of Phoenix to connect our city police and fire personnel with our residents. We get a Police Department grant to help fund these activities. G.A.I.N. event Saturday, Oct 12th from 10AM to 1 PM, Moon Valley Country Club parking lot, 151 West Moon Valley Dr. It’s our 8th annual G.A.I.N. event; which stands for Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods and is a Phoenix Police Department community outreach program. Here’s an outline of expected activities: Free Family fun activities: Kids Arts and crafts with a DJ providing festive music. Bike Safety Rodeo with free bike helmets (limited supply), bouncy house, pumpkin coloring and face painting. There’s fun for adults also, with a display of teardrop campers and bales of straw arranged for family photos. There will be puppies for adoption, and Walgreens will once again be offering flu shots, (bring your insurance card). Our police department normally brings their show-n-tell items for viewing. Profits from the few pay items will benefit ‘The 100 Club’ (Charity that supports families of injured or fallen police and fire personnel). There are burgers and hot dogs for lunch, a dunk tank where you pay for a few balls to try to dunk one of our guests (police, fire or MVNA directors) and a 50/50 raffle (last year someone won ~$200). We welcome our surrounding community residents to attend this fun, family event. Holiday time is coming! It’s not too early to start thinking about your holiday home decorating plans. I’m sure last year’s winners are already in planning mode. If you are new to Moon Valley – Christmas holiday is a big deal and we give out awards for the best decorating houses (as judged by bus riding volunteer residents). It’s a great time to show off Moon Valley and why we all love it here. Even if you don’t plan to compete – plan to put up a few lights to help get in the spirit of the season. Featured Pet - Tank Adorable Tank (614590) may be the size of one, but is as gentle as can be. The seven-year-old American Pit Bull terrier mix was rescued by an Arizona Humane Society Emergency Animal Medical Technician™ after he was found tied up to a tree with a metal chain. Luckily, a Good Samaritan saw this and called AHS right away before the heat got to the sweet pup too much. Tank’s spirit animal is a little piggy, as he sounds just like one, he loves to explore and is one of the most chill doggies there are. A big ‘ole snuggle bug, Tank is sure to make a great cuddler in the upcoming winter months (and all the time)! Meet Tank at the Arizona Humane Society’s Campus for Compassion at 1521 W. Dobbins Road in Phoenix. His adoption fee includes his neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. For more information, visit azhumane.org/adopt. Please note: This pet might have been adopted by the time you visit the shelter; however, AHS has dozens more wonderful pets who also need loving homes. Please take a moment to meet some of the other dogs, cats and other companion animals at the shelter! To see all adoptable animals right now, visit www.azhumane.org/findapet.
Garbage Can Warning BLOCK WATCHER BY BLANCHE LUKES I noticed today Tuesday, as I drove my two blocks on to my street, there were three garbage cans out for Friday Trash day pick up. I hope this is not a new trend.! Every once and a while some mischievous people will spill the can by bumping with their vehicle. Once you have cleaned up such a mess which includes your personal info all over the street, you will appreciate the heads up. One of the beautiful things about our community is how neat and clean people keep their front yards. Garbage is a necessary part of our lives, but why look at those ugly green and brown cans all week? The guidelines from the City of Phoenix is, the cans should be put out the same day about 5:30 am. for the weekly pickup, which in Moon Valley is Friday. As a refresher the Green cans are being replaced and will eventually be Black. They should be four (4) feet apart from the recycling cans Bagging of garbage and grass is a requirement by Maricopa County. All cans should have lids to prevent rain, insects and blowing of garbage and /or recyclable materials throughout the neighborhood. Unacceptable items are Household hazardous waste (paint cans, pool chemicals, oil, batteries loose grass just to name a few). Also, construction materials, concrete , appliances, large tree trunks over 4’by 12”, and tires. Helpful information can be found at www.phoenix.gov/publicworks/garbage. Great information on Bulk Pickup do’s and don’ts is there also. If you type in Seamless Service Directory you will find a wealth of information and services available to and for us. You can print it up and have it handy when needed. Blanche Lukes can be reached at Moonvalleybw@cox.net

Run, Hide, Or Fight. Are you ready to make a quick decision? BY F R O S T Y K R O E N I N G How are all the levels of police, fire, federal agencies, hospitals, schools, banks, other businesses, and citizens coordinating to protect us in Phoenix? Citizens want to understand how all this works, especially after recent news about mass shootings. We want to be effective partners in thwarting trouble. Detective Ronald Gillpatrick of the Phoenix Police Homeland Defense Bureau spoke at length at the September 11th Black Mountain Community Alliance (BMCA) meeting. He outlined layer after layer of exercises, equipment, personnel, plans and efforts that are well underway in Arizona. More importantly, Phoenix agencies have their own creative “stand-alone” capabilities to protect us. (Someone is really thinking! Thank you!) Officer Gillpatrick’s main message to people is that we do not have to sit around and be victims of any kind of terrorism, domestic or foreign. We all have eyes and ears and we can and must speak up about what we see and hear. If someone we encounter in a store, church, school, or on the street, is acting strange and doing things that look like they might be up to no good, we are urged to report the incident to a person in charge AND call the police. They don’t mind following up, even if there is nothing to worry about. A video on youtube.com called “8 Signs of Terrorism” would not play at the meeting. But, Officer Gillpatrick urged everyone to find it, play it, and share it with family, friends, and neighbors so we will know what to do in an active shooter or other event. We can be very proud of these fine officers and their work in schools, churches, businesses, sports and other large events. We now know that there are layers of backup systems planned and implemented to keep us safe. We citizens are the eyes and ears of the community and partners in our own safety. There are no guarantees, but we owe it to ourselves to try. There is true power in working together! Go on www.bmcainfo.com to find additional information. The next BMCA Black Mountain Precinct meeting is October 9 at the Deer Valley Community Center, 2001 West Wahalla.

Teacher of the Year Finalists & More
GUHSD continued from page 20
BY DR . PAUL S TANTON, SUPERINTENDENT, WESD
National Merit Semifinalists are chosen every year in September from 1.6 million entrants across the United States. Out of the 50,000 high school students with the highest PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index scores, approximately 16,000 pupils are notified that they have qualified as semifinalists. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must then fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the prestigious Merit Scholar title. Hello! I am Dr. Paul Stanton, the proud superintendent of the Washington Elementary School District. The school year is in full swing and the WESD Family is hard at work. I would like to start by sharing significant staff accomplishments: Teacher of the Year Finalist: Congratulations to Jessica Buttles, kindergarten teacher at Sunburst Elementary, for being selected as a Top 10 finalist for the Arizona Educational Foundation Teacher of the Year Award. “The AEF™ Arizona Teacher of the Year program spotlights the contributions of outstanding public school teachers throughout Arizona by annually recognizing 10 exceptionally skilled and dedicated pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public school teachers.” Jessica will be honored at the 2020 Arizona Teacher of the Year Awards Luncheon in October where the Teacher of the Year will be selected and announced. Congratulations to Julia Wright, Mountain Sky Junior High Teacher Julia Wright, entrepreneurialism teacher at Mountain Sky Junior High, was selected as the Economic Education Teacher of the Year by the Arizona Council on Economic Education. Last year, Julia pulled together 50 community members, business partners, educators and parents for the first annual Financial Fair for all eighth grade students. At the fair students had to make decisions at 23 life stations, given their monthly salary. The two-day event was a success and inspired both students and staff. Ms. Wright will be honored at the 6th Annual Champions in Education Night on November 16. Love Our Schools Day Love Our Schools Day 2019 was a success.
Mountain Sky Junior High and Lookout Mountain were just a few schools that benefited from our amazing volunteers. Thank you to the hundreds of parents, students, staff members and community groups who loved our schools on September 28. Check our Facebook page, @WESDSchools, this week to see the many projects completed that day. Weekly Support At our schools, WESD staff have the opportunity to participate in weekly professional development trainings on Wednesdays. Teachers, administrators and coaches share academic and social and emotional strategies to meet each student’s needs. Because of this, teachers are better prepared to work with diverse groups of students and students receive an education tailored to their needs. Gifted Services- Jason McIntosh, 602-347-2651, jason.mcintosh@wesdschools.org The WESD offers a variety of programs for our gifted students. All Pre-K teachers have been trained to identify and support our high potential and gifted students. WESD is one of the few Districts in the state offering this specialized training at each elementary school. Once students enter into kindergarten, they will have the opportunity to feed directly into WESD’s gifted programs. This is just one of the ways we support our youngest learners. Follow Us! Thunderbird High School’s Chief Parent Association has been busy planning our 16th Annual Auction and Golf Classic, which is the school’s largest fundraising event of the year. The success of the event in years past has had a positive impact on the entire school by providing much needed technology, equipment, renovations, repairs, updates and educational tools. Please join in on the fun and help continue to make learning more efficient and enjoyable. This year’s Auction and Party will be held on Friday, November 15, 2019 at 6:00PM at the Solheim Residence in Moon Valley. In connection to the 16th year of this event, the celebration theme is: “Sixteen Candles. Although it is not mandatory for guests to dress in their most eccentric 80’s attire as they did in the popular 80’s John Hughes film, it is certainly encouraged! This is the party of the year, and a $50 ticket will get you not only auction admittance, but a delicious dinner, hosted bar, DJ entertainment and raffles. The auction will include highly sought after items such as; custom Ping golf clubs, Disneyland tickets, sporting event tickets, a solar-powered robot pool cleaner the Solar-Breeze NX2, THS Sophomore parking passes, premium seats for Graduation plus so much more. Donations are appreciated and happily accepted. So dig out your acid washed jeans and get ready to celebrate Sweet Sixteen! The Golf Classic is an exciting shotgun start tournament. It will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2019 at 12:15PM at Papago Golf Course. There will be different activities hosted by students at several holes, which will surely bring a sense of camaraderie and competition. The weather should be perfect for a fun round of golf that supports your community’s high school. Awards and dinner will be held at 5:00 PM. You can purchase a foursome, come alone and we will pair you with a great group, or purchase a sponsorship. We have many levels of sponsorships available for these fantastic events. LIFE IS BUT A DREAM by Roseanne Hunger pangs pulled Joe’s nose out of his book, The Dream Life/Reflections of a Gigolo, hoping Tom had arrived. He spotted his old friend chatting amiably with the cafe’s hostess, stood, and waved him over. “How the heck are you?” Joe managed to get out before being enveloped in a massive bear hug. “Never better, I… What’s this?” Tom asked, noticing the book on the table as they sat. “Don’t tell me you and Julie broke up.” “Yep. Another wife bites the dust,” Joe replied. “It hasn’t even been six months.” Joe reached for his glass. “She left me no choice,” he said. “I know I’ll be sorry I asked, but what happened this time?” “We weren’t together a month when she dropped the baby bomb. Tom, have you any idea what a baby does to a women’s body! It should be a mortal sin.” After downing the last of his beer, Joe motioned for the waiter and ordered another before continuing. Tom requested ice tea. “I tried reasoning with her but she wouldn’t budge. Instead, she holds bedroom boycott.” “Children can be a joyous treasure,” Tom offered hoping, this time, his advice wouldn’t fall on deaf ears. “When Julie saw me sticking to my guns,” Joe continued without a blink, “she shoots back threatening to leave. But seeing my resolve was bulletproof, she switched aim to my bank account. How do you like that sh.. . I mean that for nerve?” Tom waved away the stifled expletive, laughing. “What’s so funny?” Joe said. “That’s quite a creative narrative. Sounds like the
The Pie
Gunfight at the Not O.K. Corral.” “Ha, ha, Tommy, you are too funny. Snicker all you want, but,” Joe said picking up his book. “You see the subtitle on this book, How to Take Her for Everything She’s Got; that’s my mantra now. Love has been a thorn in my paw since eighth grade, now I’ve finally found a manual on how to do it right.” “That path will lead straight to hell,” Tom said. “Maybe so, but I’m going to enjoy the journey. Besides, the story line of my life won’t change all that much. It’ll still be a volley of give and take, only this time, I’ll be on the opposite side of the net.” “Love shouldn’t have expectations, there’s no give and take.” Tom reached for the ice tea just placed before him. “It exists, to be. St. Peter explains it beautifully in Chapter…” “Tom,” Joe said taking a long pull from his fresh brew, “we’ve known each other since we were five. Take off the darn collar and let’s really talk.” Tom undid his top button and removed his clerical neckband placing it on top of The Dream Life, “I don’t know how to put this without sounding cliché, but Joe… you’re looking for love in all the wrong places.” Joe raised his gaze as if in prayer. “Lord, he’s given up quoting the bible and moved to country music. Perfect!” “I’m serious, Joseph.” “You think I’m not.” “I know you are, that’s why I’m concerned. For instance, take Julie.” “Whoa now, pal. I met her at a church New Year’s Eve Party, Holy Ground! How could that be the wrong place?”

”You’re missing the point. What attracted you to her?” “She had a rack that would put Jane Mansfield to shame.” “Precisely; and Cheryl?” “Well now, Cheryl, her legs were the image of Betty Grable’s. I’d been lookin’ for legs like that since I was fourteen.” “What about Darlene?” “Darlene,” Joe voice became dreamy, “a face like Natalie Wood. Did you see Gypsy?” Father Tom again measured his every word in an effort not to sound condescending. “Just for a moment let’s step into the real world. “Are you saying those women aren’t real! “They’re celluloid! Just images, a visual allusion. The things you value - breasts, legs, faces, that isn’t where you find love.” “What’d you know about love? You’re a priest.” “Listening to thousands of confessions, you’d be surprised what I guy can pick up.” Tom reached over and placed his hand on Joe’s. “The years bring wrinkles, sags and varicose veins. What’s perpetual is the soul. You have to move past outward appearances. Did you ever stop to think how those women felt? Their body parts all that mattered to you. “Wait a minute. I loved those ladies; gave them anything they wanted. All they did was break my heart and take my money.” Joe reached for his book. “I appreciate your fatherly advice, Tom, but this is my bible now. I’m doin’ the breakin’ and I’m doin’ the takin’.” “Then I’ll say it again, my friend. You’re going straight to hell. I will pray for your soul.” “Well, Padre, at least I’ll be goin’ with my heart intact.” “Joe, your heart doesn’t get to go.”
