Moon Valley Area High School Football Players Johnson and Haen Nominated for Prestigious Ed Doherty Award B Y TAY L O R C O L E

The Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club (GCSGC) is pleased to announce local Moon Valley residents Christian Johnson (Jr. RB, Greenway HS) and Niko Haen (Sr. QB, Sunnyslope HS) as the recipients of the Week 6 and Week 9 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions. “Week 6 opened up region play, and the intensity level definitely went up a notch with playoff berths at stake,” said Rob Yowell, Selection Committee Chair. “The stakes have increased in Week 9 with playoff implications factored into every game and these players are delivering spectacular performances when their teams need it most,” continues Yowell, “The level of football being played is exceptional. These young men showed why high school football in Arizona is on the national stage. They deserve their official nominations for the Ed Doherty Award.” Haen was named on the 56-player Week 3 Watch List™ released on September 10, 2019. Both players received their Medallions at a school event. By earning these Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions, they will attend the end of season Ed Doherty Award Luncheon on December 14, 2019 where one athlete will become the recipient of the Ed Doherty Award. Details on their individual nomiantion performances are as follows: Niko Haen – Sr. QB – Sunnyslope HS Niko Haen completed 16 of 24 passes for 366 yds and 4 TDs in a Week 6 win over Agua Fria 4114 on September 27th.

Christian Johnson – Jr. RB – Greenway HS In the Demons’ Week 9 35-10 win over St. Mary’s, Christian Johnson carried the ball 23 times for 193yds and 2TDs, pushing his season totals to 1,322yds and 20TDs on October 18th. These astounding young athletes are not the only football players from the Moon Valley area to have been nominated through the years. In 2001, Mike Nixon of Sunnyslope High School to home the final Ed Doherty Award, and just a few years later, Chris McGaha of Moon Valley High School took home the Ed Doherty Award in 2004. For 32 years, the Ed Doherty Award has been the State of Arizona’s highest individual high school football honor and is awarded annually to the state’s most outstanding high school football player by the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club. The Ed Doherty Award recognizes the player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. The winner of the award epitomizes great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work. In addition to on-field performance, the Ed Doherty Award recognizes the well-rounded accomplishments of community involvement, school pride, and academics. The Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club is the steward of the Ed Doherty Award and is the most meaningful advocate of high school football in the State of Arizona. The mission of the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club is to represent Arizona amateur athletics by bringing national attention to the extraordinary qualities of our young people and serve in the pursuit of athletic achievement, academic advancement and greater social affinity. TRAPPED IN MOON VALLEY

LET TER FROM THE EDITOR

Turkey…

I love turkey, and everything about Turkey’s! Not many people think of turkeys as much more than holiday dinners, hot and cold sandwiches, turkey salads and turkey flavored bacon. But I have read and seen firsthand they are playful birds who really do enjoy the company of others. They love having their feathers stroked, like to chirp, cluck and gobble, and have the personalities of dogs and cats. And how do I know? Well I visit “Tom” the turkey at Bearizona frequently at the petting zoo. He is the boss and star of that little farm. Strutting around , gobbling and following little people around while they pet and play with all the other animals. Here are some fascinating Turkey Facts: Turkey’s genetically have been modified to gain weight at a rapid speed for Holidays feasts. Wild Turkeys can fly at speeds of up to 55 miles per hour and run up to 25 miles per hour and have a lifespan of to 10 years in the wild. (only 5 months in the factory farms) Male turkeys are Toms, while females are hens, and the attraction to each other is the red flaps of skin around their necks. Turkeys have full-color vision like humans. And the most interesting fact is: Erik Marcus, the author of Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating, has spent a considerable amount of time with turkeys on farm sanctuaries. He reports, “Turkeys remember your face and they will sit closer to you with each day you revisit. Come back day after day and, before long, a few birds will pick you out as their favorite and they will come running up to you whenever you arrive. It’s a matter of the birds choosing you rather than of you choosing the birds. Different birds choose different people.” Happy Thanksgiving!

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood... BY BRET ALDIERI, MVNA PRESIDENT

I’ve asked Chris Baker to give this update on our latest community efforts with MVCC on course conditions. It’s always a beautiful day in Moon Valley, however we also have things to improve to make our community better. One of these is the condition of the Moon Valley Country Club (MVCC) golf course property – specifically the Moon Walk Executive course and Championship course periphery. We have approximately 450 residents that live adjacent to MVCC and many have expressed concerns about property condition. History: In the late 1950’s Bob Goldwater, a prominent Phoenix businessman and golf enthusiast, together with a group of investors, spearheaded the development of a large patch of vacant land in North Phoenix to become a unique residential and golf community known today as Moon Valley and Moon Valley Country Club (MVCC). Throughout its nearly 60 years of existence, MVCC has hosted many prestigious amateur and professional golf tournaments, including the PING Standard Register LPGA Golf Tournament from 1993 to 2003. Throughout its history, MVCC has gone through multiple owners and renovations. The most notable of which was Karsten Solheim, the famous inventor and founder of PING golf clubs, who purchased MVCC in the mid 1980’s. Mr. Solheim hired renowned golf course architect Bob Cupp to make improvements to the golf course in addition to creating the 18-hole Moon Walk Executive course. In 2004, Karsten Manufacturing sold MVCC back to the members and Troon Golf was hired to manage day-to-day operations. In 2008, an economic crash and excessive water bill set the club up for a $6 million debt they could not pay. Faced with the potential for a local developer to build condos in place of the golf course, our community banded together to collect a whopping $1.6 million dollars, allowing new owner C-Bons International Golf Group Management, LLC (CBIGG) to purchase MVCC with the obligation to maintain a thriving

golf club community. Current Day: It’s been five years since the CBIGG purchase and parts of the Championship course have fallen into disrepair and the Moon Walk course has been abandoned making it unplayable. The City of Phoenix has gotten involved because of neighbor complaints of dead trees, high growing weeds and the declining conditions. This is unacceptable. In fairness to CBIGG, they invested $2.7 million for the infrastructure to deliver lower priced canal water to irrigate the golf course, which will ultimately save millions of dollars long term, but they need to work with our community to sufficiently address the golf course conditions today. The reality is that Moon Valley Country Club and the greater Moon Valley residential community need each other to thrive. This year a group of concerned neighbors banded together to form the Moon Walk Neighborhood Association (MWNA) in an effort to get CBIGG to live up to their obligation to properly maintain the golf course property. The MWNA retained legal counsel and sent a demand letter to CBIGG to restore the Moon Walk course to its previous condition. As a result, MVCC sent a recent email to its members indicating the Moon Walk would be resurrected however there has been no subsequent activity nor any formal written response from CBIGG to our demand letter. Over the past several months, responses to multiple questions about course conditions from MVCC management have been ambiguous, contradictory or non-existent. We are at a crossroads and need to band together to help solve this problem that affects our neighborhood character and home real estate values. For more information on how to get involved in this critical neighborhood effort and to financially support our legal fund, please email Chris and team at moonwalkna2019@gmail.com. Rookie Mom: You’ll Be Thankful for These Mamas’ Advice! B Y B R I G H I D C O N S TA B L E

Mama: Betty Lake, Mother of Eleanor, age 3; Elliot, age 1.5

Writing the column “Rookie Mom” has proved a cathartic experience for me. Whether I’m relaying stories about my personal woes and wins, I realize that every mom has a vastly different journey with parenting. With that, I reached out to a few amazing mamas in North Phoenix whose children range from newborns

to college bound. I thought that my niche advice about being a beaming mom to a 2-year-old daughter might be, at times, a tad limiting. So with spirit of Thanksgiving in mind, I am grateful to these strong women offering sage advice in parenting.

Mama: Nicole Kuluris-Spade, Mother

Mama: Meghan Grabel, Mother of

Mama: Erica Shumaker, Mother of Arielle, age 21; Dominic, age 19; Genevieve, age 10

Advice for parents of your children’s age? Play! It means the world to them

Advice for parents of your children’s age? Keep calm, be the calm in the

when you get down and just play— dress up, picnic, dance, trucks, etc., it doesn’t matter what it is. My daughter will reminisce for days on the fifteen minutes we played together one evening after work. You will make the best memories and see them grow so much by just playing.

storm. Each child has a reason for behaving the way they are. If you feed into the chaos you aren’t going to be the safe place they need. ALWAYS harder to actually do it than say it. If you mess up, apologize to your kids, forgive yourself and move on.

feel rejected or hurt by your kids’ newfound independence. It means you are doing a good job of raising emotionally healthy people! I also like to set aside special times with each of my children to talk one-onone. For example, I have a weekly “date night” at CPK with my son while my daughter is at cheer and regularly take my daughter on mother/daughter shopping days or trips to the nail salon. Alone time gives us no-pressure time to talk and open up to one another.

What is your best experience as a mom? My best experience as a mom has

been watching my children experience things that I loved as a child. Seeing them get excited to see their extended family, for example, has been so special for me because I was always very close to my grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins. Reading my favorite books with them has also been such a joy.

What has been your toughest experience as a mom? Guilt. Being a

mom is crazy hard, and it feels like it becomes your only focus. You feel like you have lost yourself because you want to do everything 100%, but you can’t mathematically put 100% into being mom and wife and friend and (insert other facet of yourself here) so you start to feel guilty that you are never doing enough which cannot be further from the truth. It has been extremely hard for me to ask for help because I feel like I am admitting defeat, but I will say, asking for help has been life changing in my happiness with my family and career.

What is your best experience as a mom? When my girls show

unsolicited compassion and love. It just melts my heart when one of them is upset and the other tries to help. I frequently see them holding hands across car seats in the car. I must have 100 pictures of it because I snap one EVERY time, just LOVE it!

What has been your toughest experience as a mom? Everytime

I lose my cool... I have a hot head and a hotter temper. I beat myself up that I yelled or made a situation worse by not stopping to assess and find my inner peace so I can be their safe place. My best advise is one I constantly have to remind myself of... apologize to your kids, forgive yourself and move on.

Burnt Out

by Roseanne

Advice for parents of your children’s age? Be patient and loving. Do not

What is your best experience as a mom? Being a mom is the best

experience of my life. I don’t think I can point to one moment and say “this is the best” – each moment with my kids teaches me something about them and about myself. I suppose my greatest learning from being a mom is that there is nothing like the love and connection between a mother and her child.

What has been your toughest experience as a mom? My daughter

is a lot like me – she has the best parts of me and the worst parts of me. When our worst parts collide, it gets ugly. Learning to navigate those times without hurting her feelings (or feeling hurt myself) has been the toughest part of my motherhood so far.

“I can’t do it anymore, Hal. Nothing is ever enough. Buy me this, let’s go there. She thinks I’m made of money. Her incessant demands on my time are all consuming. I know, I should stand my ground; say no. But it’s not easy looking at that beautiful face, pout. Then, there’s those hissy fits and afterwards the silent treatment. I love her, but when is enough too much?” “It’ll pass, Jill.” Hal said, embracing his wife. “The tempestuous threes can’t last forever.”

Advice for parents of your children’s age? I had this incredibly naive idea

when my kids were young that all I had to do was get them to college. If I could just do that, I will have been a successful mom. In truth, you are never done being a mom. They will never ask for it, but they still want you to call (OK, mostly text) and tell them they are doing a good job. Tell your kids you are proud of them, it goes a long way.

What is your best experience as a mom? This is totally cheesy, but I love

our family dinners. A long time ago I made a commitment to always have dinner together as a family and we talk about our day. My son would typically kick off the conversation and ask, “What was the best part of your day?” My kitchen table is my most favorite place.

What has been your toughest experience as a mom? Nothing could

have prepared me for how sad and lost I felt when my kids left for college. I remember dropping my daughter off at her dorm and putting on a brave face. Then I cried the whole twohour drive home - I had to pull over a couple of times because my eyes were so swollen from crying! I knew this was the process and everything that was happening was safe and according to plan, yet I was so full of loss and grief for the little girl I had raised. I thought it would be a little bit easier when my son followed her up to the same university a few years later, but here I am crying my eyes out when I walk by his empty bedroom.

“You said that about the terrible twos, remember? What’s next, frightful fours. Face it, babe. We’re doomed!”

Avoiding the Pain of Probate B Y L I B B Y B A N K S , P L L C , E S TAT E P L A N N I N G Many people have big misconceptions of how a Last Will and Testament works. They assume that if they have a Will, their heirs will not have to go to court and file a probate. Instead, for the person who only has a Will, we do have to file a probate with the court at death. That’s because a Will does not transfer a person’s assets to his or her heirs automatically – it only states who should receive those assets. I often tell clients a Will is just instructions to the court about what you want to happen and who should be in charge of your estate. So, what is probate? Probate is the legal proceeding where we file your Will in court and ask the court to formally appoint your selected “executor.” Without that formal appointment, whoever you selected to wrap up your estate is unable to act. Probate is time consuming and expensive for a personal representative (that’s the title for your executor in Arizona). It can be a long, drawn out procedure, requires continued communication with the court, and is public – anyone can go and ask for a copy of the Will or look at what’s going on in your estate. The good news is that probate is avoidable with the right estate planning tools, and specifically with the Revocable Living Trust. Couples often own most of their property jointly, but on the death of the second spouse, the children or other heirs are faced with the settlement of the estate. The house and other real property needs to be sold or transferred, but before that can happen, the Probate Court gets involved. Here is a list of some of the demands of probate: 1. Locate the original Will. If you can only find a copy, the procedure is going to be more prolonged and difficult. 2. Take the online training required of a personal representative. 3. File the paperwork to apply to the Court to be appointed as personal representative of the estate and give notice to the other heirs. There are 7 different documents that must be filed just to start the probate – and that’s for a simple “informal” probate. Most people hire an attorney rather than try to muddle through all of it themselves. 4. Obtain permission from the Court to pay a support allowance to the family and minor Dinner Hours Sunday thru Thursday 11a until 10p Friday & Saturday 11a until 11p

If you own property in other states, a similar probate case must be filed in those other states as well. Other states, notably California, have very cumbersome and drawn out procedures for probate. The Revocable Living Trust is valuable for many estate planning needs, but one of the most obvious is the avoidance of all the time and expense of probate. With a Trust, your assets are titled in your name as trustee rather than in your individual name as owner. While you are alive and competent, you control your financial affairs much the same as you do without a trust. You manage your assets, receive the income, pay bills, buy and sell property and so on. However, when you can no longer manage your affairs (either when determined incompetent or at death), your successor trustee (someone you have already named in your Trust) automatically takes over. At your death, that trustee steps into your shoes as trustee and can settle your estate without going through the entire probate process and certainly with less money and time spent on attorneys. A Revocable Living Trust is a gift to your heirs. Spending the money now to put the right plan in place will save them time, expense and heartache. Best of all, you give your heirs the peace of mind of simple estate administration and knowing that your wishes have been fulfilled. In Honor of National Novel Writers Month, We are Showcasing the Authors from our Own Community

Chasing Arizona Dreams B Y R O G E R N AY L O R

There Are Writers Here BY JENNIFER SPIEGEL I’ve been here so long that I remember walking to Alpha Beta to buy—brace yourself—candy cigarettes (they still sold them!) and Pop Rocks with my friend, Michelle. We walked, wondering if our stomachs might explode from Pop Rocks, discussing the death of Elvis. The crazy part is that our moms let us walk across Seventh alone. Really? I guess I’m still here forty years later. Listen, I consider myself a City Girl. I love murals, skyscrapers, street tacos— but, in Moon Valley, I get the closeness and the distance of urban madness. My mountain biker husband knows the trails. Lookout Mountain vet is here. Our go-to restaurant is Soup and Sausage Bistro. We feel like sophisticated foodies in touch with multiple ethnicities, so we’re global and hip and supporting local community all at the same time. No, this is not a commercial for their Solyanka. I’m a writer. I can’t tell you that I write Arizona stuff. I don’t. I write literary fiction, mostly. I wrote The Freak Chronicles, which includes stories set in South Africa, Cuba, Russia, and China. My first novel, Love Slave, is a New York novel about the nineties. My latest, And So We Die, Having First Slept, has Phoenix in it. It’s my fave! Middle-aged, mommed-out, terrorized Gen X. I’m thrilled to announce that Wipf and Stock Publishers will publish Cancer, I’ll Give You One Year: A Non-Informative Guide To Breast Cancer, A Writer’s Memoir In Almost RealTime in 2020. It’s not about the kale. It’s a book for writers, for women, and for my kids. I wrote it for them, in case I died. #truth Moon Valley: whisper it. That’s where I write. Some advice for budding writers: Read widely, voraciously. Writers read. For more info, please go to : www.jenniferspiegel.com

www.moonvalleytattler.com

Two great truths define me: I’m a writer and I live in Arizona. I knew this remarkable state was where I belonged as soon as I arrived as a wide-eyed college student. It captivated me with its epic beauty, diverse landscapes, and rich history. My path as a writer had been set years before when I first read Mark Twain and I began to understand the power of the language. Somehow I was able to combine my two great passions and become an Arizona travel writer. These days you’ll find me rambling around Arizona and writing about what I find. My specialties include state and national parks, lonely hiking trails, twisting back roads, diners with burgers sizzling on the grill, small towns, ghost towns and pie. For a dozen years I’ve been the freelance travel writer for the Arizona Republic. My work also appears in The Guardian, USA Today, Arizona Highways, and dozens more. In 2018, I was truly honored to be inducted into the Arizona Tourism Hall of Fame. I’m the author of several Arizona travel books including The Amazing Kolb Brothers of Grand Canyon, Boots & Burgers: An Arizona Handbook for Hungry Hikers, and Arizona Kicks on Route 66. My latest book is Arizona State Parks: A Guide to Amazing Places in the Grand Canyon State. I’m giving presentations and book signings all over the state. Look for me at North Mountain Visitor Center on Saturday Nov. 9 at noon. I’ve also begun writing humorous Arizona short stories as eBooks. For years I was a standup comedian with a nationally syndicated humor column. So this is a chance to return to my roots while still celebrating my love of Arizona. The stories are fictional but they’re filled with Arizona legends, history, and locations. For more information, visit my website at www.rogernaylor.com For aspiring writers: Computers, ipads, and phones are great but always keep a notebook handy so that you maintain a tactile connection to the words. That’s where you learn to scribble, and scratch out, and take chances.

A Love of Writing BY JULIEANNA CHAUVIN To my friends and family, I am Jules! I am an 18-year-old proud Hispanic Arizonian who was not born in Moon Valley sadly. I did have friends there, however, and it was always a joy to visit them whenever I was able to. Plus, my favorite teacher is Brighid Constable “Rookie Mom.” Currently, I’m a college student who’s pursuing a degree in Creative Writing with a soon to-be added minor in Japanese. My love and my inspirations for my choices come from stories of every genre, but the most prominent are the stories from MiddleEarth, the Wizarding World, and the like. Of things that are not so easily found yet entrenched in this world. Writing, to me, is something I do to keep me going when all I want to do is hide from the world, where I pour all of my heartache, my homesickness for a home that never will be and my longing to find it. It is what has fueled me to write a story of a coven of witches who try to find their place in the world with only each other to stand on. Where they learn that the shattering of souls is not without consequence, and that once something breaks, it will never be as complete as it once was. I hope to publish it one day, when I feel I have told their story as best to my ability, when it is time. For those who are like me, I find that the best of stories come when I am outside, watching the world go by, and so I say always carry paper and pencil to write everything in, no matter how insignificant it may seem. The best ideas come from the thoughts that are fleeting and random.

Fight Disease Naturally with the Power of Exercise BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER, CMT DC Looking for a single health pursuit that can defend against a multitude of diseases – even if you’re suffering from one? Embrace the power of exercise. Research supports exercise as a natural prescription for a wide range of health conditions and its value goes far beyond prevention. In fact, a recent study evaluated the role of exercise as a treatment option for a whopping 26 major diseases classified into seven major categories: musculoskeletal system diseases, metabolic system diseases, cardio-cerebral vascular system diseases, nervous system diseases, respiratory system diseases, urinary system diseases, and cancers. For each disease within a particular category, researchers determined the impact of exercise on disease variables and whether particular exercises (vs. exercise in general) work best in that regard. Here are a few examples. Note: For reference, abbreviations quoted in the study text below include: AE (aerobic exercise), HE (home-based exercise), HIIT (high-intensity interval training), RE (resistance exercise), CT (combined aerobic and resistance training) and ME (multi-modal exercise; in other words, various types of exercise). Coronary Artery Disease: “Exercise interventions for CAD included AE and HE. The most common forms of exercise included walking, cycling, jogging, and Tai Chi. Long-term, moderate-intensity walking exercise decreased the severity of sleep apnea in CAD patients. HIIT reduced the morbidity and mortality of CAD and prevented atherosclerosis. It had beneficial effects on heart function and quality of life in patients and did not increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.” Stroke: “Vigorous AE was also a method used to effectively improve the aerobic capacity of stroke patients with hemiplegia [symptoms affecting one side of the body]. In RE protocols, after long-term PRT combined with balance training, the patient’s balance ability was improved in 3 months and the stroke patients’ walking ability improved in 3–6 months. Low-intensity RE with balance training was beneficial for improvement in plasma lipids, glucose, and exercise capacity. Short-term respiratory muscle training combined with routine physical training improved lung function and exercise capacity. Long-term CT improved cognitive ability and reduced mild cognitive impairment in patients with stroke hemiplegia.” Parkinson’s Disease: “AE, RE, and ME had some positive effects on patients with PD. AE protocols included walking and the use of bicycles and treadmills. These forms of exercise were usually performed under moderate to high intensity for a long term. AE usually showed positive effects on patients’ walking capacity, exercise function, velocity, and step length. AE also improved the executive ability of patients with cognitive impairment. Additionally, AE was used for early rehabilitation.” Alzheimer’s Disease: “AE improved the patients’ daily activity ability and cognition ... Long-term balance exercise was also prescribed, and improved the patients’ exercise capacity. Long-term ME significantly improved upper and lower body muscle strength and flexibility, agility and dynamic balance, as well as the endurance fitness, gait, and balance abilities of patients with AD. Long-term, customized HE decreased the risk of falling in the late stage of the disease and improved the executive function of community-dwelling older people with memory disorders.” Colon Cancer: “Long-term, moderate-intensity AE reduced the visceral adipose tissue content, increased health-related fitness, and reduced the recurrence risk of colon cancer among patients with Stages I, II, and III disease. Long-term, moderate-intensity, high-dose AE improved the favorable prognosis of biomarkers and the multiple HRQoL [health-related quality-of-life] outcomes of patients with colon cancer. Long-term CT had a beneficial effect on reducing patient fatigue. Low- to moderate-intensity exercise shortened the length of postoperative hospital stays and improved bowel movement after colectomy.” Osteoporosis: “[C]ommonly used forms of exercise for OP treatment include AE, RE, CT, and balance training. The AE and RE programs stimulated bone synthesis and decreased bone resorption in postmenopausal women with OP, but exercise while wearing a weighted vest was better for improving balance. Long-term Tai Chi exercise decreased the loss of bone mineral density and reduced the risk

of fractures in the study population. Short-term submaximal AE provided significant improvements in static and dynamic balances in postmenopausal osteoporotic women. Long-term, low-intensity balance and strength training significantly improved the strength and balance capability of women with OP. Long-term resistance training and balance training had a direct impact on the habitual walking speed of elderly women with a history of OP. Civitan Foundation is wrapping up the year with its annual Civitan Holiday Market on Thursday, November 21 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Civitan Village, located at 12635 N. 42nd Street in Phoenix. The Civitan Holiday Market showcases crafts and food products produced by members of the Civitan Foundation, an organization enriching the lives of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Some of the items for sale include paintings and crafts created by members. Food items for sale include baked goods, desserts and flavored jars of butter and sauces, as well as roasted and baked hams are available for sale and pre-order. “Food is always the center-piece of a family gathering around the holidays, so what a great conversation starter to say that this delicious sauce or this ham was made by someone with special needs from Civitan Foundation,” said CEO of Civitan Foundation, Inc., Dawn Trapp. Members of Civitan’s art classes create a variety of multi-media projects throughout the year to share with family and the community. Some of these one-of-a-kind items available for purchase at the Holiday Market include ceramics, drawings, mobiles, cards and other fun creative projects. Also, there are many paintings made by Civitan artists on display and for sale. “Treasures” from Civitan’s community stores, Flerish Design + Resale in Phoenix and Civitan on 66 in Williams will be on display and for sale, as well. All proceeds benefit the programs and services of the Civitan Foundation. Civitan Holiday Market is free admission. “It is so much fun to find unique gifts for friends and family that have a wonderful story behind it,” said Trapp. “Our members make the most beautiful arts and crafts, and tasty cookies, too! A gift for a friend or family member, which was made by one of our members will be cherished.” Other activities at Civitan Foundation’s Holiday Market include information tables about Civitan programs and services and live music demonstrations by members of Civitan’s Mindsong music program. Civitan Foundation provides a variety of specialized programs and services to meet the ever-changing needs of children and adults with special needs. Serving over 250 individual members per day throughout Arizona, Civitan is recognized as a community leader in dynamic, purposeful, and impactful programs and services promoting independence, community integration, and a healthy lifestyle. A Silver Bullet to Stop Tooth Decay BY D R . M E L A N I E S I M C H A K H U L L , D D S A safe and pain-free dental treatment is gaining traction as an effective way to stop cavities in both young and old. I call it my Silver Bullet. Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a clear liquid that can be painted on the surface of teeth to stop the progress of tooth decay. Initially used in the 1950s to desensitize teeth, SDF was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2014 for use on tooth decay. Dental professionals working in health clinics, wellness centers and mobile dental clinics for the underserved or uninsured were among the first to adopt the treatment because of its cost effectiveness and ease of application. Now the treatment is becoming popular in private dental offices as an option for patients who may be afraid of the drill or who cannot sit still long enough for a filling. The procedure itself takes only a few minutes and does not require the patient to be numb, making it ideal for children and adults with decay who are unable to tolerate more lengthy procedures in the dental chair. The treatment involves placement of SDF every 3 to 6 months, over a 2-year period. This regimen has demonstrated success in 91% of cases. The main disadvantage of SDF relates to its esthetic result. Wherever it comes into contact with the tooth, it permanently blackens the enamel and the area of decay. Classified as a class II medical device, studies have shown that SDF application is very safe, with no side effects other than the discoloration of the tooth where the solution has been applied. Several ongoing studies are evaluating the best practices for the use of SDF and more information is expected soon. Check with your dental professional regarding updates to this developing story. You or a loved one may benefit from this Silver Bullet!

What is CIT? BLOCK WATCHER BY BLANCHE LUKES Detective Eddie Saldivar, a Phoenix police officer, explained what the fairly new Community Response Bureau is and he outlined the multiple duties of Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) officers. This all took place at the Black Mountain Precinct Community Alliance meeting October 9 at the Deer Valley Community Center where, the same day at about 12:30 a.m. a man was murdered during a fight. Don’t worry. Our precinct police had the matter well in hand within 12 hours with the arrest of three people. Community policing strategies work! But, back to what CITs do. In response to a police-involved killing of a mentally ill person in Memphis, Tennessee, the City developed what is now called the “Memphis Model” for handling calls regarding mentally ill people. The City of Phoenix has adapted this model for our city by training over 500 officers in recognizing and de-escalating crisis situations with mentally ill persons. In addition, the CIT team operates city-wide in support of all the precinct officers. They receive 40 hours of training plus regular refresher courses. The Community Response Bureau’s chief goal is to coordinate help for hose with a mental illness. It is difficult to determine if someone is inebriated, on drugs, or mentally ill, so the CIT officers ask neighbors and relatives what the story is. They carefully assess what is really going on. If a person is violent, they need to take actions to protect themselves and those nearby. Officers are trained in multiple negotiation techniques. There are many facilities where people can be evaluated and given medicines and help with finding jobs and, if needed, housing. The goal is to return them to useful lives. However, 20% of our prison populations are said to have a mental disorder. The state is trying to do more to help. When a police officer is offering help it is a whole different scene than displaying force. And, police are experiencing significant success with these new strategies. Let’s hope and pray that this new program is successful in the long term because it is the loving thing to do. Mental illness affects all kinds of people for all kinds of reasons. When police are trained to recognize it, many families can be helped. People with concerns about family members can call Crime Stop at (602)262-6151 or your non-emergency police phone number to receive help before a true crisis occurs. Help is available. Often the most vulnerable people in our communities are those with a mental illness.

How light Affects color B Y K AT H L E E N V I C K Greetings, Readers! Before beginning any analysis of individual colors, a very important thing to consider is the nature of the light in which they will be seen. Basic earth science informs us that the sun rises in the east, sets in the west and, because we are located north of the equator, it is in the south sky nearly all day. What does this mean for color? Well, eastern light is warm and it enhances the quality of warm colors (those with yellow and red) and softens cool colors (those with blue). Western light is hot; it intensifies the appearance of warm colors and reduces the effect of cool colors. A good example of this is to look toward the east, to the mountains, at sunset and notice how they glow red. Southern light progresses from warm to hot as the day passes. Northern exposures never see direct sun so the effect of cool colors is magnified and warm colors are reduced. Artificial light can be warm or cool depending on its “temperature”. The lower the temperature, the warmer the light and the more warm colors are featured. 2700 degrees is very close to incandescent—very warm. It is a yellow orange that mimics the color of fire. As numbers rise, temperatures fall; cool colors are favored and warm colors are mitigated. Old-fashioned fluorescent light was blue but now it can range from warm to cool, as can LED (light emitting diode). That being said, warm colors are considered “uplifting, welcoming and advancing” while cool colors are considered “calming, passive and receding”. I leave you with one final thought today: When selecting colors for the interior, it is imperative to consider how they will enhance the flesh color of those who will most often be in the space. Skin color runs the gamut from ivory, “peaches and cream”, bronze, olive to a rich “espresso” and all of these contain some amount of yellow.

He Said, She Said M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C BY D EB B IE ER BS TO E SSER One person’s truth isn’t always another’s. In fact, I’ve found too many times that stories are embellished, which is really just a lie. My mom did this and I recognized at an early age that she wasn’t telling the story accurately. I found it both embarrassing and annoying, so I learned to never exaggerate. I tell it like it is, with the good and bad, hoping to be helpful. I’ve been accused of saying things I never said and doing things I didn’t do. I don’t know from where such ugliness comes from. Children love to embellish. As a teacher I was many times the recipient of these ‘stories’ parents believed. If they were brave they’d confront me and learn the truth. The others wrote long letters to the principal, which is something they despise. The past 7 years that I’ve been back in the classroom have not only been wonderfully peaceful, but I’ve reconnected with students from long ago. I’ve been ‘friended’ by some former students in inner city Philadelphia and South Phoenix from my early years as a teacher, as well as students who more recently moved on to High School. Some of them contacted me via Facebook and others via snail mail. The letters they’ve written and the things they’ve said have brought me to tears. Some of these former students are in their thirties and forties. They are teachers, engineers, models, parents, Marines and PhD’s. They all credit me for their success. That’s embellishment for sure! Unfortunately, I threw away many letters/notes of love, praise and accolades because a day, week or month before someone said something hateful and I felt unworthy. Luckily I saved some. . . He said, “I got an A+ on this and would not have been able to if it weren’t for you.” He followed this comment with his creative writing paper. She said, “I’m sure teaching in South Phoenix wasn’t easy, but you always carried yourself with such grace. My mom wasn’t very nice to me and always said the worst things. She told me I was supposed to be aborted and that I disgusted her and to never touch her. She said that she’d never have peace until I died and was 6 feet under. I tried so hard to

get good grades so she’d love me, but nothing ever worked. Being in your class was my safe place. You made me feel special and like I had meaning and it led me down a positive path. Thank you for being the amazing teacher you are.” He said, “You were the first real interaction (non-African American) I had. Based on your character we should all be like you. Teaching stubborn black kids that probably got on your last nerve, but loved us like your own. I remember and really thank you for that. It let me know in life that the racism that I did encounter was just a piece of crap person.” She said, “I wanted you to know that I am a teacher. You made such an impact on me that I wanted to be just like you. I thought you should know.” He said, “I know I gave you a hard time and probably made your life miserable, but as I get ready to graduate from college, I wanted you to know you made an impression on me and I never forgot you.” The truth is I wasn’t nearly as good back then, especially as a new teacher, as I am now. Their truths aren’t mine. I remember all the mistakes I made and the times I was impatient, but they only remember that I loved them like my own and I didn’t play favorites. So while there are many times when people make stuff up and ‘tell stories’ for whatever reason, there are so many others who tell a different story and are kind enough to share it. The magic in words is spreading joy. Make your ‘he said, she said’ helpful and truthful.

“The Right Stuff” Senior Seminar T H E W R I T E S T U F F BY G E R R Y J O H N S O N Ultimately, there comes a time when some decisions need to be made. As we get older, sometimes those decisions are made for us, without our control. It is much more prudent to plan ahead, realistically evaluate our current capabilities, and project what the near future may have in store for us. Everyone’s situation is different. Generally, getting the family involved is recommended. If not family, then trusted friends, your financial advisors, your doctor, or anyone who has your best interests at heart can be a big help in this evaluation. A systematic approach to understanding your alternatives while you still have some latitude is desirable. Should you downsize? Should you move to an assisted living community? What are your abilities? Do you need help in managing your day-to-day affairs? Financially what can you afford? These are just a few of the big questions that face us as we age. One thing I hear as a mortgage professional dealing with the senior population, is that many seniors don’t want to move, or at least don’t want to give up their independence. A sad truth, however, is that a vast majority of retirement aged people have not accumulated enough savings to carry them through their retirement years. One source of financial security is home equity. There are several ways to tap into this source. A Reverse Mortgage is one of the best. To the person that needs it, a Reverse Mortgage is a real Godsend. Senior planning is a daunting task. Most people don’t know where to start. There are professionals who have studied this dilemma and have senior certifications who can help. Realtors with the SRES (Senior Real Estate Specialist) designation have the expertise to guide senior homebuyers and sellers through their lifestyle transitions. Moving into a senior living community is an alternative. Many of these communities have different levels of care which can be accessed at the appropriate time without ever moving off-premises. The daily interaction can be a very healthy diversion. This can be a very social and fun environment. I am partnering up with Pat Ford, SRES, of Realty One Group, and The

Featured Pet-Bluford Handsome Bluford (617409) is a big boy who has a big heart with lots of love to give. While not much is known about his past due to him being rescued as a stray and brought to the Arizona Humane Society, it is known that he is potty-trained and walks great on a leash! The three-year-old pittie also will sit for treats, speak on demand and thinks he’s a lap dog despite his size. Meet Bluford at the Arizona Humane Society’s Campus for Compassion at 1521 W. Dobbins Road in Phoenix. His adoption fee includes his neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. For more information, visit azhumane. org/adopt. Please note: This pet might have been adopted by the time you visit the shelter; however, AHS has dozens more wonderful pets who also need loving homes. Please take a moment to meet some of the other dogs, cats and other companion animals at the shelter! To see all adoptable animals right now, visit www.azhumane.org/findapet.

Dog Etiquette in phoenix BY F R O S T Y K R O E N I N G The City of Phoenix has a nifty pamphlet on laws pertaining to our “best friends.” City Code 1962 and Ordinance Number G-4762 contain rules and regulations for our dogs and dog owners. We knew that we need to pick up dog “waste” on our walks. But, we did not know that in our own private yards we should not allow such waste to accumulate more than 24 hours! We knew about the six feet in length leash laws and that dogs off leashes “shall be confined within an enclosure that is secure.” Rules for dog parks where animals can be off leash behind fences are available on https://www. phoenix.gov/policesite/Documents/Dog_Leash_Laws.pdf. There is a whole page of instructions on what to do if a neighbor’s dog is barking constantly. These are available at www.phoenix.gov/law/prosecutor/barking-dogs/ information-for-the-dog-owner. There is a no-cost mediation process for parking dog problems. The phone number is (602)464-7810, Option #5. This mediation process is required before a criminal complaint will be considered by the Police Department. The Barking Dog Hotline number is (602) 262-6466. Staff will send information to an owner of a barking dog! Barking dog petitions also are available at that number. Of course, if a dog is creating an unsafe situation, calling Crime Stop at (602) 262-6151 is essential. We love our dog. She is part of our family. We realize that we have a big responsibility in managing her safety as well as for people around us. She is an excellent watchdog too, always on duty!

Tullio Campagnolo BY LEON, TRY ME BICYCLE SHOP Tullio was the inventor of the quick release for wheels in 1927. Making changing flats and gears simpler an faster. Before a wrench was used or nuts with wings so they could be removed with the hand. The quick release is a hollow axle with a smaller axel or skewer going through the center. The skewer has a lever on one end and a threaded nut on the other end. The lever is on a cam system to tighten or loosen. This speedy removal of wheels makes thieves job easy. So locking the wheels is a must. Locking skewers are made with special keys . Looks like we might be going backward back to where we started in 1927. What is a bar con shifter?

btc North Valley Seniors Help families be homeward bound BY K Y L E B L AC K My name is Kyle Black. I am a senior at Brophy College Preparatory and have been a member of the North Valley League of Boys Team Charity for six years. BTC is a volunteer service organization dedicated to developing an altruistic spirit in young men through active participation by parents and sons in philanthropic projects in their communities. We give of ourselves to help others and better our community. Every year the BTC senior class does a project that will leave their footprint within the community. This year we worked with Homeward Bound. Homeward Bound is based in central Phoenix. They provide homeless families or those facing eviction a safe place to live while also providing services and help to get back on their own two feet and out of poverty. The children of these families often times have nothing but a few personal items when they arrive at Homeward Bound. Our main project was to assist with the refurbishing of a newly renovated building that is home to the HB library, homework area, music area and game area. The problem was that everything was crammed into one room, making it near impossible for the children who were doing homework or reading to concentrate while others were playing music or games. The renovation fixed the issue by creating designated space for each activity.

We did a tremendous amount of work packing up the old library and moving everything into storage. After finishing, we moved everything back into the new space, and helped sort and shelve the books by age and genre. In the game room area, we painted, created a lego wall, a creative chalk wall, painted an inspiring mural and organized the games and musical instruments. We also donated items such as games, puzzles, legos as well as other items for the space. It is a place that is bright and welcoming and safe for the children. It turned out amazing! In addition, we beautified the community garden area of the complex by adding a decorative fence, a welcome sign, trimmed the vegetation, removing unused items and organizing garden containers. We cleaned out, tilled and replanted the garden beds. We also built a large outdoor Jenga game. I know the children will love everything we’ve done in the renovated building. The gardens are a great place to relax, get your hands dirty and also to teach the children about plants, food and nature. The entire Homeward Bound community will benefit from the harvests from the gardens. Boys Team Charity is proud to say that we were a part of the project and have left our footprint at Homeward Bound for years to come.

Changing Women’s Lives in Sunnyslope House of Refuge Sunnyslope, Inc. is pleased to announce that it received a grant from Thunderbirds Charities to renovate and restore a beautiful property for the Women’s Transitional Living Facilities. The property, purchased in 2014, underwent a major remodeling with the purchase and has provided safe housing for 89 women since then. Space can now be used for private meetings such as counseling, one on one mentoring, and case management. In addition, it will be used by women who are undergoing reunification with their children, to have private, onsite visitations. The grant also provided funds for droughtresistant landscaping, providing a well-maintained property to the neighborhood. House of Refuge Sunnyslope has been providing transitional housing in Phoenix since 1988 and has three programs; men, women, and single moms with children. The organization can house up to 83 people at a time and has served over 5,000 individuals since its inception. They provide safe housing, life-changing services, and individualized improvement plans.

THUNDERBIRD HIGH SCHOOL

PARTY AND AUCTION

BY Y V O N N E K U D R AY- B A R A B A N ‘Tis the season. No, the holidays are not upon us yet, but Medicare Open enrollment starts on October 15th and runs through December 7th. This is the time of year when you decide which Medicare insurance plan is best for you in 2020. Even if you are happy with your current plan, there might be something even better out there for you. If you are currently on a plan, keep your eye on your mailbox for the Annual Notice of Change. This is sent out by your Medicare Advantage plan and will list any changes to your benefits for next year. There are some notable changes coming next year. In 2020, Medicare Supplement Plan F and Plan C will no longer be available to those who become eligible on or after January 1, 2020. And the new Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period started in 2019 will continue. It will run from January 1 – March 31 every year. If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you’ll have a one-time opportunity between January 1 – March 31st to: Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare, Part A and Part B Sign up for a stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan (if you return to Original Medicare). Other big news for Medicare recipients who take medications is that the Medicare Part D Donut Hole is closing. Drug manufacturers will be paying larger percentages of the drug costs, while Medicare drug plans will increase the amount they cover, resulting in the coverage gap closing. This year Medicare pays 56% of the price of your generic drugs while you’re in the Donut Hole. You are responsible for the remaining 44%. In 2020, the number you will be responsible for is only 25% of the cost. This could mean substantial saving for Part D beneficiaries in the Donut Hole. How are you going to navigate the enrollment process? You can learn about and enroll in a plan either by contacting the various carriers directly or you can utilize the service of an Independent Broker. If you call a carrier directly, you will likely speak to a sales agent that works for that company exclusively. The advantage of an Independent Broker is that they work for you and can offer you more than just one option when it comes to your Medicare insurance needs. The services of an Independent Broker do not cost you anything as they receive a commission directly from the carrier whose plan they sell to you. It’s hard to know what Medicare insurance plan is the right fit for you. As an Independent Broker, I can help you process all of the information that will be coming your way in order to select the best plan for you. I can be reached by calling 602-575-0622 or email at Yvonne.Kudray@Cox.net. Yvonne Kudray-Baraban is a Sales Representative and Independent Broker licensed by the State of Arizona who has been specializing in selling Medicare insurance since 1996, over twenty years!

Community, culture & keychains BY MELISSA LIT T On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, 20 high school girls are making beaded keychains to give away to kids they don’t even know instead of hanging out with friends and family. This is not a typical activity for most teen girls during their free time, so what is motivating these 20 girls? It’s the reward of knowing that they are putting a smile on a child’s face even if they never actually see it; the feeling of giving back that is indescribable which NCL helps provide thru philanthropy and volunteerism. Sophomore Sara Slack commented, “Being in NCL makes me feel closer to the community by helping people and making a difference in their lives.” National Charity League, Inc. (NCL) is a nationwide charity organization in which mothers and daughters work together to help the community through volunteer projects. The 268 chapters of NCL range across 27 states and strive to help those in need. NCL partners with different local charity businesses to provide them with the volunteers needed to help with anything from large events to everyday needs. As an example of this dedication to philanthropy, NCL Moon Valley Chapter’s class of 2022 worked together to make 270 beaded keychains within just an hour. Each keychain consisted of about twelve beads threaded on a lanyard cord and tied to a metal key ring. The keychains will go to Back to School Clothing Drive (BTSCD), one of NCL’s philanthropy partners. BTSCD is a nonprofit organization that provides 25,000 children in Arizona with new clothes, backpacks, school supplies and other necessities for the school year. Through NCL’s partnership with the Back to School Clothing Drive, members help to run the main clothing distribution as well as other events throughout the year. The keychains made by NCL will be distributed to the children at the main BTSCD event in July where each child can pick something unique for him or her

It was inspiring to see them all striving to help make a difference in the lives of Back to School Clothing Drive’s children.” Come July, the ladies of National Charity League will get to walk children through the BTSCD event and see the joy each child feels when getting their own handmade keychain. NCL, Inc. is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong mother-daughter relationships through community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. Members include girls ranging from 7th to 12th grade along with their mothers. The member application drive is currently underway, and the deadline for applications is January 15, 2020.
