Celebrating the Season of Giving BY REESE VEIDMARK

Shiny packages under a tree, a favorite gift someone has been waiting for, the jingle of bells – with the beginning of December, families everywhere are getting ready for the season of giving. Holidays like Hanukkah and Christmas are in the forefront of everyone’s mind as families come together to celebrate. However, some families are facing less than ideal financial situations during the holiday season. That is where the Mountain View Elementary Adopt-A-Family project and Jaydie Lynn King Foundation become a saving grace for many. Both organizations give their time to help others in a time of need. The NCL Moon Valley Chapter is a proud partner of the Adopt-A-Family program, hosted by the Mountain View Elementary School, which serves families that are struggling financially. Each grade level of the NCL Moon Valley chapter collects gifts for Adopt-A-Family members. This is one of my favorite activities because you get to meet the families when you drop off the gifts before Christmas. This opportunity gives me a greater appreciation for my family and how much God has blessed us. Another local philanthropy, the Jaydie Lynn King Foundation, supports families with children at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. They provide many different activities for the children, but during the holiday season, volunteers will “adopt” a family and cover their entire Christmas. The mothers and daughters in NCL help wrap thousands of packages for the families. Senior Megan Huttenmeyer from Thunderbird High School commented, “I

like attending the Jaydie Lynn Foundation’s annual Christmas wrapping event every year because of the great sense of community we feel when we are there. Not only do I feel like I’m helping families in need, but going every year really helps me realize how everyone comes together to help each other.” The last five years in NCL have given me the opportunity to meet with people that I may have never met and learn their stories. In this time of giving and thankfulness, it is important to look outward at others, even though it may be a hard task. As David Foster Wallace said in his speech, This is Water, “The really important kind of freedom involves attention, and awareness, and discipline and effort, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them, over and over,... every day. That is real freedom.” I encourage everyone to take this time to look not only at themselves, but out into the world and those who are asking for help. NCL, Inc. is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong mother-daughter relationships through community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. Members include girls ranging from 7th to 12th grade along with their mothers. The member application drive is currently underway, and the deadline for applications is January 15, 2020. DON’T WORRY BE HAPPY…. Really, it’s just that simple?

“To be happy means to be free, not from pain or fear, but from care or anxiety.” – W.H. Auden The ancient meaning of “happy” come from “hap” or chance- as in mishap, or hap-pening. Happy meant fortunate or lucky, and we still call people happy who manage to turn life’s’ unpredictability to their advantage. We use the words Happy- Holiday, Birthday, Thanksgiving, Day, Happy this and Happy that in our everyday language and greetings. Happiness is truly a matter of attitude, whether we see the cup half empty or half full, it is a feeling of contentment. A feeling when all your needs are meant and we feel satisfied and fulfilled. But damn, it is sure hard to maintain at all times, and the degrees of bliss or despair of depression hit all of us at different times. Knowing and accepting that being happy is more than not, something each and every one of us control. Complex yet simple, humans are very complicated to understand, but basic needs on the inside are very similar. I have pondered on this topic during the Holidays, it is a time when many are very happy, yet many are very sad. Expectations of what a holiday is supposed to look like, what gifts did we receive or not, who is coming to share, and the list goes on and on, and is shattered more time than not. I believe our individual theories of happiness are based on our genetics, how we were raised and our life experiences. What makes us happy today, is not necessarily what will make us happy tomorrow (my husband has the hardest time with this!!) but oh so true. During this what is supposed to joyous season, I ask each of you to remember, not everyone is happy, and it is not necessarily our job to make everyone happy., but your happiness is your “job”. Working on a few areas of

your life will surely help in the reality of happiness: Your wellbeing: feeling your mind-body connections, working on your physical strength and mind health Environment: the choice to be where you feel the best, most loved, comfortable, safe and free Pleasure: the joys of eating, sex, love, playing and small indulgences Relationships: relish and engage with those that make you feel your best Involvement: get out and join in fun adventures and activities, peaking curiosity Success: confirming what you do has value Flexibility: how you recover from inevitable negative events, and having the strength to explore and create a different scenario And so, I end with Happy Day, today and try every day to find the little happiness that is there , some days you will need to dig deep, while others we will be rolling in the fluffy, sickening sweet cotton candy, loving our Happy Days!

Doing Good for Others Saves You Money by Bo Larsen

It is well documented that doing good for others is doing good for yourself. When you help others in need by volunteering your time or through financial support, you are receiving benefits as well. The act of altruism has been shown to lower blood pressure, make one happier, be less lonely, and in some cases, live longer! The act of giving to others through community non-profit organizations makes a tremendous difference to the lives they in turn help. Many community-based non-profit organizations feed the hungry, provide job skill training, offer shelter, and some offer healthcare services. While others, like the Civitan Foundation, provide services for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Most community based non-profit organizations need support to maintain or grow services that benefit the community they serve. This is where the Arizona Tax Credit becomes a valuable tool for funding, as well as a benefit to you, the taxpayer. Doing good for others is a win for everyone! “The donations we receive make an incredible difference for our organization to benefit our members,” said Civitan Foundation CEO Dawn Trapp. “Funds help us purchase supplies, expand programs and services, and help us create new opportunities to benefit the community we serve. It’s hard to do what we do without community support.” The Arizona Tax Credit provides a dollar-for-dollar individual income tax credit for contributions to Qualifying Charitable Organizations (QCO) that provide “immediate basic needs to residents of Arizona who receive temporary assistance, are low-income residents of Arizona, or are children who have a chronic illness or physical disability.” The maximum tax credit allowed is $800 for married couples filing jointly and $400 for single, heads of household and filing separately. You don’t need to make a one-time donation at the end of the year to benefit from the AZ Tax Credit, either. Ongoing monthly donations are also accepted. This makes receiving your tax credit at the end of the year easy and your donation is doing good in our community. Civitan Foundation uses financial donations to support its mission of “delivering superior life experiences to enhance the quality of life for children and adults with developmental disabilities.” Founded in 1968, Camp Civitan, a 15-acre wheelchair accessible facility in Williams, Arizona was built by dedicated volunteers and parents with the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the unique joy of summer camp – regardless of ability level. Today, the Foundation serves more than 1,400 families throughout the state. In addition to Camp Civitan, which offers 10-weeklong summer camps and 12-weekend camps for the rest of the year. Other programs and services provided include Adult Life Learning (DTA) programs in Phoenix, Maricopa, and Williams. Civitan also provides respite care through the Respite Ranch, a one of a kind services offering members a ‘home away from home’ experience for a night, a weekend, or longer in a supervised, safe, and comfortable environment. Flerish Design and Resale store provide job skill training and employment opportunities in a retail setting. Civitan on 66 is a boutique store of unique items in Williams which benefits the organization. Civitan also provides Home and Community-Based Services, offering families that need or desire more individualized respite, habilitation, and attendant care services to our members living at home. Rookie Mom: I Still don’t know what i’m doing! B Y B R I G H I D C O N S TA B L E A friend of mine announced last week that she is six months pregnant. She only told her family, but freshly came out to her friends. The reason, she says, why waiting so long to tell anyone was because she had no clue what she was doing. I felt so much empathy and sympathy for her. I had asked her where she was registered and she said she was still working on that. I sent her pictures of an extra Bumbo and boppy asking if she’d want them, and she had no idea what they were. I could tell that I was overwhelming her even more... But the truth is that, I remember where she was: Not knowing how to prepare for my first child and not knowing what questions to ask because I was sincerely figuring things out in the darks and feelings things out. With my toddler, I still have no idea what I’m doing. And think that if you asked any parent on the street how to deal with their child and a certain age, they would say the same thing, too… Because we’re always new to it! Even with the second, third, fourth, whatever child, each soul has a different personality, so there’s always a big question mark on how to approach education, behavior, or whatever else. So in the spirit of the “Rookie Mom” title, I’m going to throw out questions that I STILL have for my 2-year-old daughter. ● Should my family embrace Elf on the Shelf or is it a completely stupid tradition to avoid? ● What’s a good brand of toddler shoes that lasts more than 2 weeks? ● How do I get my daughter to listen to my husband and myself? She ignores every direction with a “no.” ● How do I wean my daughter off the paci? She only takes it if she gets

hurt or when she naps. I recently had a judgmental comment from her pediatrician, but it comforts her. ● I still rock my daughter to sleep. She’s having trouble adjusting to her bed. How do I phase out the rocking? ● Where do I find bear underwear? My daughter has specifically asked for “bear underwear” to incentivize her to potty train & Amazon can’t even track it. ● My daughter only wants to eat chicken nuggets for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She’s eating, so I’m not worried. Should I be? ● My daughter is mostly potty trained, but she’s afraid to poo in the toilet. Is this a phase? ● My daughter is starting to make up lies… Such as a friend at school “hit her” even when it’s not true. She even once said that I “hit her.” Should I be worried or write it off? I’ve had a heavier talk with her, but it hasn’t made an impression. Of course there are more, and yes, some of these are shallow, but as far as I’m concerned, I think it’s totally natural to feel overwhelmed and clueless as a mom in whatever stage you are as a parent. We’re all on this ship of fools together, so happy holidays to you and your family of fools!

Who Will Be in Charge of Your estate? B Y L I B B Y B A N K S , P L L C , E S TAT E P L A N N I N G Someone is going to step in to take charge of your estate. If you are incapacitated, that person will step in to manage it to care for you (hopefully), and on your death they will be the one to wrap up your estate and distribute it. If you put an estate plan in place, via a Will or Trust, you decide who that person will be. If you don’t, the State of Arizona, via the legislature, has decided who that will be. Will the State’s choice be one you are happy with? When you establish a Revocable Living Trust, the person in charge is your successor trustee. That successor trustee will be caring for you if you become incapacitated and caring for and distributing the assets to your family or other beneficiaries when you are gone. With the Revocable Living Trust, you (or you and your spouse) are the initial trustees. If something happens to you, your spouse serves alone, and vice versa. That’s the easy part. But how do you decide on who will take your place if you can’t serve? The following are qualities to look for in a successor trustee: Integrity and loyalty. For me, this is the most important quality. It dismays me to get the call that a trustee has been mishandling money or, worse, filling their own pockets with trust assets. It is essential to select someone you trust implicitly, someone you believe would never consider misusing the trust assets. General business competence and willingness to seek assistance. You might think you need someone with investment savvy to be your trustee. What you really need is someone who is willing to seek out and listen to good counsel and advice, and someone with the capacity to discern between good and bad advice. Your trustee’s understanding of business and financial matters and their ability to find a good investment advisor is more important than their (perceived) ability to pick winning stocks. Sensitivity to and understanding of your beneficiaries’ needs and circumstances. This factor is one that often keeps a client from appointing a bank, trust company or fiduciary as trustee. Will the institution be mindful of what you would want for your beneficiaries, or will it be too regimented about what it sees as a “need”? A family member may be a better choice for many people, simply because they will be more responsive to a beneficiary’s

requests. Where there are substantial assets in a trust, however, a good compromise might be a family member and a trust company serving as co-trustees. In addition, a local institution may be more responsive. When you interview a trust company, ask if the person who would serve as the primary contact for the trustee is located in Arizona or is out of state. Knowledge of your assets and/or business interests. Are you comfortable that the trustee knows what you have and how you operate? Do they understand your business or asset distribution? If not, that person may not be the best choice for your successor trustee. In addition, consider what assets you own. For instance, if your assets consist largely of commercial rental properties, you may want to pick a trustee who is familiar with commercial property management. Similar values and attitudes about money. It’s important for a trustee to understand what you want for your beneficiaries in the way of distributions, access to the assets, and opportunities to manage the assets themselves. If your values and your trustees are too incongruent, your beneficiaries may not be treated the way you want. If learning to work hard and make your own way is important to you, don’t pick a trustee that wants to pay for everything for a child. If you want a beneficiary to have the opportunity to learn how to manage the trust assets, pick a trustee who is willing to teach the beneficiary and have them involved in decision-making. Willingness and ability to serve. Always ask whether the trustee is willing to serve and has the time to do so. The initial work of a trustee can be quite time consuming, and ongoing maintenance and accounting take time as well. If your first choice for trustee is reluctant, that may be a sign that he doesn’t really have the time or ability to do a good job. Geographic location. With globalization and advances in technology and communication, the location of your trustee and beneficiaries may not be so important. Still, the nature of your assets may necessitate selecting someone who is nearby. For instance, if you own several rental properties in Phoenix, a trustee in New York won’t be able to readily check on whether the property manager is really doing its job. The properties may be run down and lose value before the long distance trustee realizes it. Consider also that if you are incapacitated, you may want a trustee who is nearby to watch over your care as well as the money being paid for your care. You can appoint one trustee for incapacity and another for when you are gone. Cost and amount of estate assets. Last, you need to consider cost. Banks and trust companies generally charge based on a percentage of the assets under management. Many don’t offer trustee services for estates under $2-5 Million (or more). Private fiduciaries, who are licensed by the state, charge on an hourly basis. While they are often willing to manage smaller estates, many have limitations. A family member or friend may be willing to manage your estate whatever its size. Remember, though, that you should provide compensation for the work the trustee performs, even if he is your brother. Selecting a trustee is important. If you keep these principles in mind, you should feel confident you have made a good choice. I’m always happy to discuss these choices with you. Bicycle Registration and Rules BY FROST Y K ROENING The Phoenix Police Department has a flyer about bicycle riding and safety practices. We are urged to wear protective gear like neon colors and properly fitted bicycle helmets. Brakes should be checked and tires properly inflated before riding. And, here are some of the riding rules to keep you and your bike safe: 1. Assume car and truck drivers do not see you and slow down and get ready to stop at intersections and driveways. 2. Ride on the right side of the road with the flow of traffic and obey all traffic laws. You can be issued a ticket by the police if you don’t follow normal vehicle rules. Ride no more than two abreast. 3. Lock your bike if you plan to leave it, even for a moment! Codes 28-815-28-813B of the City Code spell out legal requirements for riders. Thieves are less likely to steal a registered bike since its owner easily can be identified. Owners should notify the Police Department if he or she sells a bike or if a bike is stolen. Too Many Seniors are Falling (and Dying), But Here’s How to Fix It BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER, CMT DC Seniors have always been at a higher risk of falling than any other age demographic, with the exception of babies first learning how to stand and walk (and falling a lot in the process). With age, our strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, vision and awareness can all suffer to varying degrees, depending on the individual, making a fall more likely. Medication use and chronic health conditions can also play a role. Unfortunately, with falls come the potential for broken bones and lifethreatening injuries, which seniors are generally less-equipped to recover from physically. Even worse: Falls are increasing in the elderly population, and so are deaths attributable to falls. In fact, a recent 15-year analysis published in the Journal of the American Medical Association underscored those disturbing trends, specifically in seniors ages 75 and older. It’s unclear why more seniors are dying from falls, but we do know ways seniors can help reduce their risk of suffering a fall. Here are some simple suggestions that apply not just to seniors, but the young and old looking to stay healthy and avoid the consequences of an unintentional fall: 1. Live the Balanced Life: Posture and balance are absolutely critical to minimizing fall risk. If you’re slouched, slumped, unsteady or unbalanced, it doesn’t take much for a misstep or miscalculation to turn into a full-fledged fall. Your chiropractor can evaluate your posture and overall balance; perform spinal adjustments to help eliminate any restrictions that may be impacting your posture or otherwise impacting your range of motion; and suggest simple exercises to get you standing tall, well-balanced and stable in no time. 2. Strength Is Your Ally: Starting sometime in our mid-30s, we start to lose muscle mass and function – up to 3-5 percent per decade if we’re inactive. It’s called sarcopenia, or age-related muscle loss. Even habitually active people will suffer some degree of sarcopenia, but consistent physical activity that maintains / builds muscle is the key to minimizing its impact. Why does muscle matter when it comes to falls? Easy. Stronger legs are less likely to betray you. Stronger arms are more likely to support you if you trip over something. More muscle increases the chances you’ll survive a fall with minimal damage; after all, muscle can absorb fall impact much better than bone. 3. Think Natural (Not Medicinal): Ever heard the term polypharmacy? It’s a big problem in the elderly population. Polypharmacy means concurrent use of

First, as we age, our risk of suffering chronic conditions goes up (especially if we haven’t taken care of ourselves when we we’re younger). Second, elderly patients (more so even than other age groups) tend to do what their medical doctors tell them to do. And far too often, MDs tell patients to take medicine. Taking care of business when it comes to your credit score is one of the most important things you can do to enhance your financial well-being. People with good FICOs have a big advantage. Obviously, they get better rates on mortgages and other loans, but it also has a big impact on insurance, and it may even affect job promotions (dead beats usually don’t get the best jobs). I know for sure that mortgage loan officers and Realtors have to have good credit. Our licenses depend on it. Moon Valley resident since 1974 Lisa Gerstner in Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine (August, 2019 issue) wrote an informative article entitled “8 Ways to Boost Your Credit Score.” I can’t recreate the entire piece here, but following are some great strategies for Senior Loan Officer boosting your FICOs and the reasons why this is important. Residential and Reverse Mortgages Pay down credit card debt. The key here is the “credit-utilization ratio.” If 602.390.6422 the aggregate credit limit of all your cards is $10,000 and you owe $10,000, your gjohnson@peoplesmortgage.com ratio is 100% - bad news. If you cannot pay down the debt substantially, ask for a credit limit raise. This automatically lowers your ratio. Schedule your payments so that, if possible, you are making payments before the “card closing date.” This will show up as a lower balance on your next bill. By all means, make your payment by the “payment due date.” Even if you are just a few days late you may incur a late charge. Late charge or Starbucks latte – you make the choice. Be very careful about credit inquiries. Each time a lender checks your credit a “hard” pull is registered. That 25% off of your first purchase is usually not a good deal on cards that charge high interest – like some of the big box stores. Each “hard” pull is detrimental to your score. Multiple inquiries in a short amount of time, while shopping for a car or a mortgage, usually don’t have the same negative impact. Remove negative information from your credit reports. You are entitled to one free report from each bureau each year. Check them out and if there is something on the report that you don’t recognize, you should dispute it. Sometimes you can negotiate with creditors to remove paid bad marks. It is worth a try. Piggyback on someone else’s good credit. If you are an authorized user on someone else’s account, each time they make an on-time payment you get a good mark. If nothing else, time will help your credit score. Eventually, those bad marks factor off. This certainly isn’t a quick fix, but there may be light at the end of the tunnel. So, I combined some of the eight steps. The important thing is to be proactive in improving your credit scores. By “taking care of business,” the next time you want to buy that new home or new car, you will glad you did.

For instance, if you are only interested in getting out of pain and/or symptom relief then alleviating pain and symptom relief will be the focus. Of course this is always the first goal and chiropractic is highly successful at symptom relief. But truly the ultimate goal in chiropractic philosophy is reaching one’s full potential in health and wellness. To achieve this goal, maintaining proper spinal alignment is important. Dealing with Sensitive Teeth BY D R . Unfortunately, some of us have a hard time with these foods due to tooth sensitivity. What makes teeth sensitive? Red: The color of Power & Passion B Y K AT H L E E N V I C K Red is the color of power and passion as in: the “red light” district and “seeing red”. The kind of woman who can wear bright red lipstick without looking out of place is a “hot tomato”; men wear red “power” ties; all of these conjure up thoughts of power and/or passion. Red also increases the appetite (which may be why many restaurants’ interiors traditionally were painted red). Adding black to red (creating maroon) makes it more masculine and symbolizes strength & nobility. Adding white to red (creating pink) makes it more feminine and symbolizes youth & playfulness. Adding green to red (prodding it toward neutral) reduces its “heat”, thus tempering its power while adding complexity. When yellow is mixed with red (creating orange) it creates energetic excitement. When blue is mixed with red (creating purple) it adds spirituality to power, thus it has become synonymous with God and royalty (royals traditionally asserted that their power came directly from the Almighty). Painting a kitchen with red walls does many things: it enhances the color of food, (especially making vegetables appear more attractive); it whets the appetite and it quickens the pace of activity. Should the cabinetry be dark, red walls make the space more intimate whereas if the cabinetry is light red walls create a backdrop that enlivens the space and makes the cabinetry more of a feature. Red can add warmth to a room that lacks any direct sunlight (north-facing) yet it may become too overwhelming in a room that receives direct sunlight (south-facing) most of the day—unless it is reflecting the overly hot temperament of the resident!

Tips from a Pro M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C BY D EB B IE ER BS TO E SSER I was huge. I was so big that total strangers asked if I was having twins. I don’t know what it is about pregnant women that make people ask such personal questions, but they do. I got so tired of it that once I lied, “No, I’m having triplets.” The ladies concurred with, “I knew there was more than one when we saw her in church!” Ugh! Of course I had to tell the truth, “No, I’m having one big boy. I’m just tired of people saying I look like I’m having twins.” They blushed and I felt horrible. However, a week or so later when some strangers in the bank line saw me with 3 year old Jon and 2 year old Joel and asked if I’d “tried” for a girl, I was beyond fed up. I told them the truth, “No. It was a night of passion.” They turned away bright red and I didn’t feel horrible. People shouldn’t assume, and most definitely not ask. There was no way for them to know that I had struggled to have children and spent years and thousands of dollars to have them! Women can be hormonal, especially pregnant ones, so nosy questions shouldn’t be asked! We tried for so long to have our children and didn’t give a heck darn what gender they were. We’ve been married 35 years and our oldest son just turned 24. I had plenty of time to watch and learn from others. I read a lot and I listened. I shared what I learned with Gary and we agreed on many things. Of course once the boys came, some of it went out the window, but one thing I kept close to my heart was a firm conviction in what I did not want showing up in anyone’s classroom. I knew not to listen to a parent of a brat and I knew from watching, that dads parent differently than moms and that it is O.K! I knew as a teacher that children are resilient and whatever we adults might do to mess up, will be forgiven and forgotten by these sweet and innocent souls if we just let them know how much we love them and we’re trying. So, if it’s not too late for you as a parent, or grandparent I have some tips. I am not a ‘pro’ as my husband calls me, but I did learn from other’s mistakes and successes. He used to call me with questions when a young mom would come into his office and I was home with our boys. He told me I should write a book, but there was very little that I could take credit for personally. I just used what worked. Swaddle. If it’s good enough for Jesus, it must work. Gary was the ‘Master Swaddler’ and he took over after I’d bathe the baby and breastfeed. I could then take my shower and go to bed. I was never sure how the night would go, so I was grateful for the head start to get some sleep. Make up the crib, toddler bed, bed 3 sheets deep. There are really good sheet protectors. Buy them! If there is an accident, simply take off a layer, dump it in the laundry room, put your child in a clean diaper and jammies and go back to bed. Do NOT show frustration. They can’t help it, no matter the age. Breastfeed with no lights on. Once you turn on the lights and tv it becomes ‘playtime’ and your child becomes conditioned that 2am is a fun rendezvous with mommy time. Keep it dark. Feed and love that baby. Then put him/her back to bed and rejoin your husband because once the kids are gone, “you” are all that’s left. Read books! Drop Everything And Read. When I taught before children one of my schools had “DEAR” time. We’d literally: Drop Everything And Read. If my child came to me with a book I’d turn off the water, stove, oven, whatever… and I’d read. NO! Hide and Seek in the Master Bedroom! Ever! It becomes the hiding place for all presents all year and they won’t even know it if you don’t allow access to it as a playground! Create boundaries with religion and holidays. I didn’t want Santa getting all the credit for the amazing gifts my kids got, so we bought the ‘big’ gift and stocking stuffers. Santa brought other things. When it came time to wrap, I didn’t have to hide what I was doing. I’d get comfy behind our locked bedroom door and blatantly wrap. My boys knew that most of the presents came from us. Genius! An old friend gave me this idea. Designate a certain wrapping paper for each child. Santa doesn’t have time for a ‘who-to’ therefore each child has their own wrapping paper. They will NOT remember that you spent many nights wrapping presents. The excitement of Christmas morning erases any questions of how many hours you wrapped versus how many presents there are from you vs Mr. Claus. Most importantly when wrapping presents, regardless of whether it’s Christmas, Birthday, whatever, take the gift out of the obnoxious constraints and put in batteries. Make sure it works and then slide it back into the packaging so that when it’s

unwrapped it easily slides out and works immediately. I thought of that one myself. Easter is a super sacred holiday for us. Very early on I stopped allowing the Easter Bunny to visit our home. I told the boys that Easter was about Christ’s Resurrection and the Easter Bunny was trying to steal His joy. I assured them that we’d do everything the ‘Big Bun’ did, but better. He was allowed to hide eggs in our yard, but we’d be doing their baskets. Again. . . hiding presents in our room and putting the baskets together was the perfect decoy. Thus, no playing ‘hide and seek’ in our bedroom. As the children got older and a third one was on his way, I wanted to make sure the two older boys were going to be okay with it, and I bought them baby dolls so they’d learn how to be gentle and a kitchen set to keep them distracted. They loved reading to their ‘babies’. Once Jaden got bigger I had to get him one too because the novelty did NOT wear off. The boys continued to read to their baby dolls and would put capes on them and run around the house as superheroes. The kitchen set had a real sink and they loved to pretend to make Gary and I meals. They can all cook. And they love little kids. Keep toys in the car that are not allowed in the house and vice a versa. That way when you have to run errands it’s not a dreaded time for them because they have new toys to play with. The novelty of ‘car’ toys versus ‘house’ toys will serve you well. Too bad if they don’t want to stop playing with the ‘car’ toy once you’re home. They have to learn that ‘no’ means ‘no’ otherwise their teachers will hate you. They’ll get over it. Trust me. Once inside their happy home, the ‘house’ toys will make them forget what they were upset about. They don’t have a lot of long term memory. No Technology for young ones is O.K. We were the last ones to get anything. Our boys played and used their imagination. Sometimes their friends didn’t want to stay at our house because there wasn’t technology and it hurt their feelings, but we stuck to our beliefs and didn’t get anything until our oldest was in Jr. High. Get over yourself. I cried myself to sleep many nights, sure that I’d messed my boys up. Years later when I asked for their forgiveness, they had no idea what I was talking about. They thanked me for being strict. They had no bad childhood memories, only good. Say you’re Sorry, Please and Thank You. Our boy’s manners are impeccable because I read an article that said if you want polite children, be polite. Gary and I immediately began practicing it. By the time we had our kids we were used to always saying Please and Thank You for the most mundane things. Gary still thanks me for making dinner or doing laundry and I still thank him for going to Costco, fixing a sprinkler or bringing me coffee. Your child will emulate. Children love to copy us. Make sure that what they’re copying is worthwhile. Keep a journal and Write what they say. I am not usually a journaler, but I’m glad I did. One night when Jon was 5, he came to me and said, “I’m gonna to be a dad. I’m gonna have big harms, big hegs and big hunnerwares.” I’m pretty sure I’d remember this sweet conversation, but I might not remember which son said it if I hadn’t recorded it. When all is said and done and the children have grown and gone, all that is left is you two. You’re back to where you started, and it’s hopefully not hard to find each other again. Tips from a Pro... continued from page 17 It’s not always pretty, but sticking it out shows your children how to navigate their own lives in the future. Life is messy and there’s no point in trying to hide it. Before Gary became deaf in one ear, he used to love music playing all the time and installed speakers around the house and patio so he could hear it everywhere, including in the yard. One day he was weeding, I was doing housework and the boys were playing. He came in sweaty and yucky to say that Elton John’s song, “I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words, how wonderful life is while you’re in the world” really spoke to him. He wanted me to know that he was glad I was in his world. Only Jon was old enough to understand what was said and why I was crying and we were hugging. The look of sheer joy on his little face proved to me that many of the things I read were correct; love each other so your child knows how to love their future spouse. There is no magic to raising children: it’s exhausting and hard. You don’t even know until they’re gone if you did a good job and if you didn’t there’s no going back to fix it. So while I’m not the pro Gary says I am, I used what worked for me. I hope you will do the same and enjoy the Holidays knowing you’re doing your best.

BTC Gives back BY B T C C L A S S O F 2024 December is always a very busy month for boys team charity of North Valley! There are many events and opportunities for service and giving back to some wonderful organizations. On December 14th-15th, the boys can volunteer as a scorebook keeper, shot clock assistant and score clock operator at the Phoenix Banner Wheelchair Sun’s tournament. This is such a great opportunity for the kids to see amazing athletes from all around the country. It is an inspiring day for everyone! boys team charity members donate stockings, pajamas and toys to the children of Mom’s Place. These children have been through some tumultuous situations so receiving a special gift with the child’s name on it is a highlight of their holiday season. The boys will also have an opportunity to donate their time to help wrap presents for families who have been adopted by volunteers of the Jaydie Lynn King organization. Many of these children are in need of a Christmas. Each of these families has a child receiving treatment at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, and are experiencing other difficulties in their lives. These are just a few ways that boys team charity North Valley League is getting involved with the community during this holiday season. The inaugural Moon Valley Children’s Business Fair was an inspiring day of enterprise and a show stopping display of the creative minds our Moon Valley children have. A bustling fair with food, trinkets, and goodies commenced for shoppers at 10am, but planning and practice for the young business owners started weeks in advance. Before the fair was even truly announced, applications began flooding in from hopeful entrepreneurs to snag a table at the November 16th event in – over 70 booths ended up participating (and competing) for top honors of “Most Creative,” “Most Business Potential,” and “Best Pitch” because yes, each of these aspiring business owners had to sell the judges along with their wares. From macarons to mini pies, to “ouchie bags,” artwork and scrunchies, to even the best little farmer around, there was no lack in variety of items to enjoy and cross off some holiday gift giving. Quite a few business owners sold out of their products – oh boy, don’t some of us parents wish we had such luck with a startup! Not only were these business owners walking away with profits, they were also walking away with knowledge and first hand experience at truly running a business. “I’ve learned that a business takes more work than you might expect. If you want to make it happen, work for it and it will become an amazing experience,” states young CEO Aurora of Shimmer and Shine. Her setup of fairy dust necklaces and dragon eggs caught the eyes of shoppers and the judges, as Aurora was one of the winners in her age category. I brought my kiddos to the event to explore and get inspired for their own businesses, but they ended up being awesome consumers instead: still, a very important job in the marketplace. Olivia naturally took home a rainbow fairy dust necklace and Ricky

adopted a golden dragon in a blue egg. This event would not have been possible without the hard work of Mark and Jodi Stanley, and the dedication of Julia Wright, Entrepreneurialism Teacher at Mountain Sky Junior High. Wright’s passion for entrepreneurship earned her the Economic Education Teacher of the Year by the Arizona Council on Economic Education (ACEE)! “ACEE is the only organization in Arizona which: prepares teachers and student teachers in teaching personal finance, economics and entrepreneurship.” The Stanley’s children participated in other business fairs around the city and at the urging of Wright, they all decided to bring a children’s business fair to Moon Valley. “This is so much fun for our children, encouraging them to think through their ideas, start their own businesses. Fun to shop, too!” states Jodi Stanley. Support for the children’s business fair did not stop there. Mike Troncelitto of Troncellito Law immediately jumped on as a premier sponsor, along with Debbie Kovesdy, founder of Generation Winners in each age category showcased above Tech Support. Both believe whole heartedly in the advancement of our children through unique pathways and knew supporting the Moon Valley Children’s Business Fair was a natural fit. Thunderbird NJROTC Team Triumphs at Battle of Midway Competition BY C I A R A E S C A L A N T E The NJROTC Drill team at Thunderbird High School, a proud member of the Glendale Union High School District, competed in the Battle of Midway Drill Competition onboard the USS Midway Museum in San Diego, California. During the event, the top seven NJROTC programs competed in armed and unarmed exhibition drill. Thunderbird NJROTC took second place in both categories and second place overall. Bicycles Shifters BY LEON, TRY ME BICYCLE SHOP Bicycles need some sort of lever or button to move the chain from gear to gear. They can be twist grip type. Levers can be mounted to the handler bar stem or down tube of the bike frame. Shifters incorporated into the brake lever being most popular. More complex and costly. Shifters on the ends of the handle bars are called bar cons. They were made by Shimano, Suntour, Simplex and others. They were popular 45 years. They are still used on cyclocross bikes and some recumbents. These have a very simple design and are not easily broken. Because they are at the end of the bar a finger are palm is all that’s needed to shift. What is cyclocross?

Moon Valley Women’s Club Service Project Awards 2019 Grants

The MVWC Service Project has awarded three large grants, total value $17,200, to Sunnyslope Elementary School, Moon Mountain Elementary School and the DeColores Shelter. Another successful spring auction, headed by Rosalie Welty, along with generous individual donations, provided the necessary funds to make these awards possible. This year we were able to increase the number of organizations supported and fund two new projects. This coming holiday season, under the continued guidance of Sandi Kogan, we will sponsor forty elementary school students and their families. The children in the family will receive clothing and gifts. Adults will receive household goods. These families are the neediest of two economically deprived school districts, both located near Moon Valley. School social workers assist us by identifying needy students and distributing the gift packages. Also this fall we took on a new project that Pat Clegg has volunteered to organize. We will sponsor ten families with a Thanksgiving dinner they might otherwise not have. Groceries will be purchased according to the family’s request, honoring their traditional holiday meal. The DeColores Shelter has been a long standing recipient of our support. Women and children escaping abusive situations are welcomed into the shelter. They are given a safe place to recover and assistance to help their return back into the community. The Club will continue supplying household goods; kitchen wares, bed linens and cleaning supplies as in previous years. Nancy Palmquist oversees this project. These donations allow the women an opportunity to make a fresh start as they transition out of the shelter. In addition, the shelter will receive a cash donation to stock an underwear closet for adults and children since most do not bring much with them when fleeing a difficult situation. MVWC Service Project awards large grants in Fall, small grants in Spring. Service Project Board members are Sandi Kogan, Pat Clegg, Denny Loback, Roseanne Boyle, Mary Harris and Michael Heglaw.
