NCL Recognizes Its 2019 Graduating Seniors An Interview with Natalie and Madie Viedmark The Moon Valley Chapter of National Charity League, Inc. (NCL) recently held it’s 2019 Senior Recognition Event at the Arizona Country Club to honor its graduating seniors and their moms. We interviewed Natalie Viedmark, president of the chapter for 2018-2019, and her daughter, Madie Viedmark, class of 2019, to get their take on what the event and their experience with NCL has been like.

Natalie, why did you initially decide to join NCL? - I was interested in joining NCL to find times to volunteer together, as well as to become part of a community with other mothers and daughters. We joined NCL when my oldest daughter, Madie, was finishing eighth grade and moving to high school. While I knew about joining NCL at the end of sixth grade, at the time, I thought we could replicate the experience in places we already served. However, we found NCL to be so much more than just volunteering, which is why we signed up Madie’s sister in sixth grade – so we could start our journey from the beginning.

Recently, the chapter hosted a Senior Recognition Event for the senior girls and their moms. Can you tell us a little bit about the event?

Senior recognition is an event to honor the girls finishing their NCL experience.

It is a celebration of their journey and an opportunity for the chapter to hear about what lies ahead for each of the girls. The event is planned by the members of the junior class. They create the theme, invitations, programs, decor, plan the layout of the event and create a slide show featuring the graduating seniors. One of the core objectives of NCL is to develop leadership skills in our girls. The juniors plan this event with very little involvement from the mothers. So, while we honor seniors, the juniors are learning to host, plan and work together.

Natalie, what was your favorite part of the event?

First of all, congratulations to all the graduating seniors and their moms. We

have loved being a part of this journey with you! As for the event, my favorite part was the introductions of each girl. I got to walk in with my daughter, Madie, and hear the juniors speak about her journey and future plans – it was such a joyful experience. The slide show they created was also touching. Every year when I’ve attended this event, it was a little emotional. This year, it was just joyful because we were both excited and looking forward to all that lies ahead.

Natalie, what is your favorite memory or experience with NCL during your Madie’s time there? - I’ve loved watching Madie making meals at Homebase Youth Services. She spent four years in the culinary program at Thunderbird High School, so she was able to use the skills she learned in the high school to serve young adults living in this transitional housing program.

Madie, what do you think about your time in NCL? I have really enjoyed my time in NCL. I have gotten a chance to do incredible things for myself and others. I have been a part of experiences I will never get to do again. It was truly a remarkable time.

While walking the neighborhood, I have been noticing several “volunteers” just pop up. How did they get here, a bird dropping, a little squirrel nibbling, the wind or were they actually planted and put there intentionally?

I am talking about the beautiful Holly Hocks that came from possibly New Mexico, or the beautiful sunflower from a lonely seed, and the baby cactus sprouting close by its mama.

It really got me thinking of the volunteers I know, the ones that just pop in and ask what can be done, the ones we recruit to help for certain projects and the ones we mentor to follow in our footsteps. There are so many different kinds of volunteers in our community that are colorful, and a true help to of those in need, and just always there to count on. As summer approaches so quickly, I would like to remind one and all of the many needs in our community, and the possibilities for EVERYONE to volunteer, both young and old. Now is the time to mentor and teach our youth the many benefits to volunteering, not just what a difference you can make in others, BUT the bigger difference you will make in yourself.

Please feel free to email or tag us on social media when you are in need of volunteers, we want to help create a stronger sense of community, with supports in place to grow, and always a helping hand or ear to listen.

Meet Evan Williams, scholar-athlete, headed to the University of Alabama to play wheelchair basketball.

Evan joined the world eight weeks prematurely and has been astonishing ever since. Evan has cerebral palsy - CP encompasses a range of disorders that inhibit movement and can also affect muscle control, coordination, tone, reflex, posture and balance.

CP is not degenerative but it is a permanent condition. CP is a neurodevelopment disorder like autism and epilepsy, public awareness hasn’t quite reached the SPORTS HAVE MADE A HUGE same levels though.

Evan and his family moved to Moon Valley in 2012 and Evan began wheelchair track with Arizona Disabled Sports. He has qualified every year for

Junior Nationals in his specific events. He started playing wheelchair basketball in 2014. The last 2 years, he has played for the Ability360 teams, both on the Junior team and the men’s travel team. This year, the junior team missed qualifying for Nationals, but the men’s team took SECOND at the National Tournament in Chicago.

Evan is a huge advocate for kids with disabilities. He has been an athlete ambassador for Arizona Disabled Sports and a mentor/coach for the Max in Motion program at the Ability360 Sports & Fitness Center for the last 5 years.

This program, which is held once a month, introduces kids, 6-12 years old, to the different adaptive sports. Evan and his family founded the JAAM Foundation (Junior Adaptive Athletes in Motion), which helps families acquire the expensive, custom adaptive sports equipment necessary to take athletes to the next level of their respective sports.

Last year, Evan started his college search with the desire to continue to compete in his sports - he decided to compare the University of Arizona and the University of Alabama. U of A recruited Evan for their adaptive track team and University of Alabama for their basketball team. In March, Evan decided to spread his wings and join the National Champion Men’s Wheelchair Basketball team at the University of Alabama - ROLL TIDE! He will be studying Mathematics and Business and is excited for the opportunities that lie ahead.

GenerationZ Cars - The Lincoln Nautilus B Y J O H A N S W A R T, C O R N E L S W A R T & J A N S W A R T a few. The Nautilus has four trim levels: Standard, Select, Reserve, and Black This is interesting - In 1902, Henry Ford lost his second company, the Henry Ford Company to a group of investors led by Henry Leland. Leland renamed The Henry Ford Company to the Cadillac Automobile Company which was then picked up by GM in 1909. So technically Cadillac drivers drive a Ford Cadillac ☺. Henry Leland then started Lincoln Motor Company in 1917. He named the company after Abraham Lincoln whom was the first president he voted for. Imagine if this story played off differently, and Leland named his company Garfield, or Polk, or Hoover … “I drive a Garfield Model G” … or “I drive an Polk Model B”, or as Jeremy Clarkson from Grand Tour would have said … “I drive a Hooooover” – needless to say, luckily this story played itself out 100 years ago and Henry voted for Lincoln!

After introducing the Lincoln Model L super luxury vehicle (I can see who Tesla copied?) financial troubles hit and ironically Henry Ford bought Lincoln from Henry Leland in 1922. Today Lincoln is the luxury brand of Ford. By now you should have guessed that we are going to review a Lincoln and find out if it really is a great luxury brand. Dr. Bailes allowed us to review his brand new 2019 Lincoln Nautilus and immediately we went to Wikipedia to see what Nautilus means – “The nautilus (from the Latin form of the original Ancient Greek: ‘sailor’) is a pelagic marine mollusk of the cephalopod family Nautilidae, the sole extant family of the superfamily Nautilaceae and of its smaller but near equal suborder, Nautilina” …. Phew, we decided this is way too complicated to explain the name and promptly ignored the urge to understand the name, but we got sailor out of it and stuck to it.

The Lincoln Nautilus, a midsize luxury SUV has some tough competitors in the luxury SUV market such as Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Cadillac just to name

It has all the modern safety features such as blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, and pedestrian detection. One package that can be added to the car is an advanced adaptive cruise control that can stop and go in traffic and keep you in the lane on the highway. Another package you can add will give you a 360° camera as well as the ability to automatically parallel park if the space is big enough. It has heated and cooled seats, memory settings, an optional 22-way (!) adjustable seat for driver and passenger, massage functions, remote start and so much more. The Alcantara roof lining gave a plush impression. Since Ford owns Lincoln they share the infotainment system so it will be familiar if you have owned a Ford vehicle. The car’s interior is made with exceptional materials making everything feel very continued on page 17

Is there a family fight brewing in your estate?

In my past as a trial attorney, I handled family estate fights. Clients hired me to sort out the gigantic mess left by their loved one, and the inevitable and escalating disagreements about the estate. Other clients retained me to fight for a share of the estate when a sibling, stepparent or other relative took advantage of his position as executor of the estate. Time after time, clients said they would never speak to their siblings again, or lamented that the messy estate issues were breaking the family apart. I value family highly, and these cases broke my heart. I went into estate planning to help clients avoid these messy fights.

A proper estate plan can help by taking the fight out of your estate. When there’s no fight, it’s much easier for your loved ones to hold your memory dear and support and love each other. Here are a few of the mistakes I often see in my office.

Not having a plan: This seems obvious, but it is the number one mistake made by thousands of people. If you don’t have a plan, don’t worry. The State of Arizona has one for you. The legislature put it together for us to follow, but it may not be what you want. My best advice is to put a plan in place now. If you have children, you need a plan. If you own a home, you need a plan. It might be a simple plan, but that simple plan can save your family heartache and money when you’re gone – which may be sooner than you expect.

Not having a plan leaves your heirs to fight about who’s in charge, who’s going to front attorney’s fees and funeral expenses and who’s going to do the work of wrapping up your estate. A simple plan may be all you need, and that plan could make sure your children still speak to each other when the work on your estate is complete.

Putting a do-it-yourself plan in place or using a non-expert for your plan: Sometimes we need to call in the experts. Here’s my personal example. My husband is a great handyman. When we updated our kitchen, he replaced the appliances himself.

Everything went great until we got to the new vent hood. I stood across the kitchen watching him, then moved away for a better view. As he connected the wiring, suddenly the vent’s light bulbs burst and the fan spun across the room, hitting the cabinet where I had been standing! “Honey,” I said. “Should I call an electrician?”

We were lucky. No one got electrocuted or hurt. But we learned that there are times when it’s best to call an expert. The same is true for estate planning. If you make a mistake, it will be too late when your family finds out. They may end up with a complicated mess and a family fight.

Using a non-expert can cause problems as well. Non-experts are often really smart people, but they aren’t estate planning attorneys. They don’t have the education and the attention to language that estate planners have. I have sorted out many a mess caused by a non-expert’s plan.

Failing to Fund Your Revocable Living Trust: Many people are not aware that their trust can only control the assets that are placed in it. The document may be written well and have excellent instructions, but until it is funded (by changing titles and beneficiary designations), it doesn’t control anything. This will mean that your heirs will still have to go through court proceedings (called probate) to distribute your estate – one of the very things a trust is supposed to avoid. I like to use this analogy: Remember those toy sorting bins you used for your kids? When they put the toys in the bins where they belonged, it worked great. When they didn’t put the toys in the bin, there was still a big mess. If you haven’t properly funded your trust, you are still leaving a mess behind for your heirs. Don’t leave a mess.

Keeping your “older-than-the-hills” estate plan: Did you put a Will together when your children were born? Good for you! But if it’s been a few years, it may be time to revisit your plan. If your children are still minors, but your assets have grown substantially, you may want to rethink how you are leaving your assets to them. If your children now have their own children, you need an update desperately. If you don’t know whether there are changes in the laws governing your estate, you need a legal review of the plan to be sure.

I recommend to my clients that they review their plan with me every three years.

That way, if the laws have changed, I can let them know how it affects them. If their situation has changed, I can advise whether their plan needs an update because of the new circumstances.

An older estate plan can cause the same kinds of problems as no plan. If your plan doesn’t address your current circumstances – both your family situation and your asset situation – a fight over what should be done may well be on the horizon.

Summer job to remember for a lifetime

BY BO L ARSEN Most summer jobs for college-age students and adults with summers’ free are either hard to find or not gratifying. That’s what makes opportunities to earn a good income and make a difference in someone’s life even more rewarding and memorable.

As a Camp Civitan provider, at least 18-years of age, help provide guidance, life enrichment and memorable experiences for children and adults with developmental disabilities in the northern Arizona town of Williams.

Camp Civitan is a 10-week summer camp for children and adults with special needs. This 15-acre wheelchair accessible facility has changed the lives of many high school volunteers and college-age staff, as well as experienced teachers and older adults, since 1968. It is not unusual for many of these young adults to have life-changing experiences working with people with developmental disabilities.

Camp staff share the same experiences as the campers and often find themselves looking at their future academic and career choices after a summer at Camp Civitan “I thought I was going to be a teacher after college, but my experiences spent at Camp Civitan and working with this population was always in the back of my mind,” said Camp Civitan Director Mike “Skippy” Hough.

“Now it’s my career. It may not be a career for everyone, but it will be remembered as a great time while making a difference.”

Each week-long camp session offers special needs campers, some as young as 8 and as old as 65, the opportunity to make new friends, sing, dance, create art projects, do skits, visit the Grand Canyon or Bearizona, and so much more. The

experience allows people with disabilities to blossom and grow away from home and family routines offering the most important and much-needed respite time for the families and caregivers at home. Our campers and staff as well gain many new life skills which include, self-confidence, and independence. Camp Civitan programs are designed to promote positive, healthy lifestyles while building meaningful and lasting relationships.

Many Camp Civitan staff look at social service careers, special education, health care, and legal professions, and other pursuits which help people and families thrive, many have changed college studies after just one summer working with this population. The experiences and the relationships developed with the campers build a higher level of empathy and respect for people and families living with special needs.

On average, young college summer staff return to Camp Civitan for four summers, and many work weekends during the entire year. Staff not only return to camp for the fun and relationships with other staff and returning campers, but they also realize that these positions are well paid for summer employment. On average, staff who work the 10-week-long sessions will earn more than $5,000, including all meals, lodging, and all the entertainment and fun. There is no better way to spend the summer, and help pay for college and expenses, not to mention, will be the most memorable summer you will ever have.

Chiropractic for Low Back Pain: Your Best, First Recommendation

NICHOLAS WARNER, CMT DC Numerous studies have shown chiropractic spinal manipulation is effective for low back pain, which is good news considering you only have a small chance of avoiding LBP during the course of your lifetime. In fact, it’s estimated that at least eight in 10 people will suffer low back pain at some point, many of whom will experience it on multiple occasions or even chronically.

Now here’s even better news: Evidence suggests chiropractic spinal manipulation is as effective as commonly recommended treatment options such as pain medication for LBP, which should make it your best, first recommendation, particularly in light of the prescription opioid crisis killing more than 100 Americans a day.

In a new review study, published in the British Medical Journal, researchers evaluated findings from 47 previous investigations involving more than 9,000 men and women (average age: 35-60 years). All studies compared the value of spinal manipulative therapy with recommended therapies including nonsteroidial anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs; Aleve, Motrin, etc.), prescription painkillers and exercise. Spinal manipulation relieved LBP as effectively as the recommended therapies and was actually more effective in improving shortterm function.

Spinal manipulation still isn’t routinely recommended as a primary treatment for low back pain, despite evolving guidelines in the U.S. and worldwide.

The opioid epidemic has opened eyes to the need for safer pain-relief options, but so far, the recommendations don’t go far enough. Middle Schoolers are Buying Homes in Moon Valley!

BY JULIE PEK Seriously? Yes, seriously…as least for one day when Mountain Sky Middle School hosted its first Financial Fair Day last month. This was an opportunity for students to learn what it’s like to pay for their own expenses.

They were given a monthly paycheck and then went about paying their expenses. Visiting the different “stations,” the students learned how far their earnings would go! Representatives from the community, were on hand to show them what it cost for housing, insurance, food, clothing… and even owning a pet! The Moon Valley Real Estate Group sold over 50 houses that weekend to students who wanted to invest in real estate.

Educating them about down payments, mortgage interest and first-time home buyer grants, helped these students gain an appreciation of homeownership. Each homeowner received a special “Deed of Sale” and their very own keys. A big shout out to Julia Wright, the teacher and creator of this event. Learning about economics at an early age will benefit these students when they are out of school…and yes, they’ll be buying homes in Moon Valley some day! It’s more than just a swim lesson.

Summer is approaching and the American Academy of Pediatrics has just issued a statement that validates what we have been doing for the past 20 plus years!. Several high profile tragic drownings of young children have alerted this group to address the issue of death from drownings. Drowning can be silent and quick, and it kills nearly 1,000 children every year.

Here are some highlights from the new statement.

It is critically important for us to collaborate with families and communities to protect kids from drowning,” said Ben Hoffman, MD, FAAP. Pediatricians should be talking about water safety routinely during wellchild visits.

Children and parents need to learn to swim.

“Research has found that swim lessons are beneficial for children starting around age 1.

Basic water competency swim skills include the ability to enter the water, surface, turn around, propel oneself for at least 25 yards and then exit the water. “ Even the best swim lessons cannot “drown-proof” a child, and so AAP strongly

recommends parents take steps that make a child’s environment safer. For homes with a pool, the most important safety measure is a 4-sided fence that completely surrounds the pool and isolates it from the house.

Warm weather is here and at Hubbard Family Swim School the phones are ringing more than ever.

So many Phoenix families think that swim lessons happen in the summer months and are surprised to find out that many of our classes are already full with students that have been swimming once a week all year long to prepare for summer months in outdoor pools.

We have spent over 20 years watching thousands of young children become calm and confident swimmers. In 2013 we were part of a study by Australia’s Griffith University. The study of 7,000 children showed that children, who consistently participated in structured swim lessons were testing one year to 15 months ahead of non-swimming peers cognitively, verbally and physically. These results were evident across socio-economic lines.

We continue to emphasize to all parents that swim lessons are one part of keeping everyone safer. We believe that our students are safer around water they are NEVER safe around water.

Needless to say, all of us at Hubbard Family Swim School and the US Swim School Association are ecstatic and excited to have the support of pediatricians taking a more active role in speaking with parents of young children about the importance of water safety.

Teen Perspective: Let’s Remove Media Stereotypes of the LGBTQ Community

BY HAID ER ALBA ZO NY In 1919, film called “Different from the Others” was released in Germany. It centers on two men who fall in love in a time when their affection was outlawed. It was obviously considered controversial material since being homosexual not only broke the law, but even resulted in death.

Today, our society can claim that we’ve progressed from these views vastly, and that’s true: Gay characters have made several appearances throughout pop culture since then. For example, last year Fox Studios released a film called “Love, Simon,” which is not only driven by a homosexual character, but follows the gay protagonist, Simon, on a journey of self-discovery in being comfortable with his sexuality.

The movie received numerous praise from critics and audiences, and even went on to make $66.32 million at the box office. Many would think this is a huge step forward, but I believe we’re still standing in the same spot in 1919.

In actuality, the character Simon is played by a famous young heartthrob actor, Nick Robinson, who identifies as a heterosexual male.

As a 17-year-old gay young teen myself, I find it conflicting when viewing homosexual characters being played by straight actors. It’s upsetting because the portrayal of the character seems ingenuine and it seems like sexual appropriation. It makes me feel like these characters are just tokenisms and simply used to diversify films or used to appeal to a certain audience or demographic.

Being gay has many traits, just as being heterosexual makes up many traits.

For example, I am not flamboyant; I don’t say “Yas, Queen!”; and I’m definitely not fashionable. It’s true that I identify with being gay, but “gay culture” is twisted by the media, and many heterosexuals assume “gay” characterisitcs within a media role.

Typically when a LGTBQ character is implemented into the plot, they’re never give a crucial role or an identity pivotal to the plot. Gay characters are

consistently typecasted and always playing stereotypes. For example, many gay male characters play the girl’s fashionable friend that gives relationship advice.

Or, gay women play a butch-like character. As a gay person without any of these token gay traits, I can say that the LGBTQ community is more complex than that. With this, films like “Love, Simon” shouldn’t only open doors, but should walk through them and commit to its genuine subject material. I also believe it is unfair to actors who are part of the LGBTQ community as they aren’t getting the work they deserve and are being stolen from. It’s also a rarity to actually see actors who are apart of the LGBTQ community who are successful and get an abundance of work.

It’s time for people from the LGBTQ to get their dues and eliminate the sense of absence that Hollywood has let linger in the background for years now.

We have loved having an empty nest, but we always knew it was temporary as long as we have boys in college. With summer getting closer and school letting out, we have two flying back in to roost for a few months. We’ve offered each son a year rent free to save for their next venture; a house, padding a new 401K, whatever will help them make their start out into the world. Jon preferred to strike out on his own-living and working in Scottsdale. Joel got a job in Scottsdale too, but he wants to take us up on the offer of a year rent free. Since I never really got used to buying less groceries for just the two of us, it won’t be much of an adjustment there. However the freedom to walk around as nature intended will take more getting used to!

It will be an adjustment for all of us, but love and patience with see us through. Also, knowing that this is it and he’s gone forever, will give us all a different perspective. I thank God every day for the gift of their lives in ours. Another year will be ok. We’ll get through it, because he’s a gift.

Student Energy Committee- Over the last few months, Chief Science Officers from WESD middle schools gathered together for the first WESD Student Energy Committee. Jason Stanley, the WESD STEAM Instructional Coach, facilitated a problem-based learning process for students regarding energy usage at their middle schools. Students were challenged to develop creative energy solutions for their schools. This project is part of the WESD Family and Community Engagement focus, which includes student voice. Jonathan Perrone, Mountain Sky STEM teacher, attended with a team of students ready to solve realworld problems.

The Student Energy Committee presented their final projects at the end of March. Cholla Middle School students presented on LED Lights (changing light bulbs to LED because they last longer and are more efficient). Desert Foothills Junior High students suggested behavioral changes (turning off lights, unplugging items, closing doors, etc.) Mountain Sky Junior High students also discussed behavioral changes, as well as changing the light bulbs to LED, which will enhance circadian rhythms.

Finally, Royal Palm Middle School students presented on LED Lights and concluded that the WESD can save energy and the environment by making the switch. We are so proud of our students!

They’ll be able to camp, hike, backpack, earn merit badges, advance in rank, and become Eagle Scouts! Troop 3323 recently participated in a “crossover” ceremony at Bumble Bee Ranch with their Brother Troop 323 to symbolize the start of their scouting journey. They are looking forward to taking their first backpacking trip together this month and will attend Camp Geronimo in June. Troop 3323 meets at All Saints Lutheran Church on Tuesday evenings, and is actively recruiting girls that would like to be involved in scouting. Reverse Mortgages - What do you think?

T H E W R I T E S T U F F BY G E R R Y J O H N S O N For about the last 60 years or so, I have been employed in some form of sales.

I have attended a number of sales training classes, and as a part of that training, a session on closing techniques was always presented. Hard close, soft close, series of leading questions, features and benefits, and on and on. I determined early on that I wasn’t going to be part of a team that swept through an area selling vacuum cleaners, encyclopedias, or siding, therefore, these closing strategies were not for me.

I have never wanted to force someone into something that they didn’t want, simply to make a commission. I prefer to present the product in a logical, informative manner, pointing out the advantages (and disadvantages), and let them make a reasoned decision. My best close is “what do you think?”

Thus, here are some advantages (and disadvantages) of Reverse Mortgages.

I must note that I am talking about the FHA version, called a HECM or Home Equity Conversion Mortgage. This is the loan of choice. Some proprietary Reverse Mortgages seem to be popping up recently, but as far as I can tell they don’t offer the same safeguards as the HECM. With a HECM: You have no monthly principal and interest payments (you must still pay property taxes and hazard insurance, and keep the property up. An impound-like fund can be setup to pay the taxes and insurance from the proceeds of the HECM).

If one spouse or life partner is not yet 62, or otherwise does not qualify, the HECM can be set up so that the Non Borrowing Spouse (NBS) can remain in the home should the borrower predecease them. If additional funds are still available, the NBS would not have access to them, but they could still live in the house.

Funds drawn from the HECM are not taxable, because they are a loan.

The distribution formulas are set up so that there is ample equity in the home even if the borrower lives to well past 100 years of age. In other words, moving to assisted living or leaving an inheritance for the children could still be possible even with a HECM. Your estate or your heirs are not responsible for making up any shortfall, if there is one. Several payout strategies are available with a HECM: You can receive a monthly income for as long as you reside in the home You can set up a Line of Credit which never expires and grows in value every month, unless you totally tap out the funds available from the HECM, or You can receive a lump sum payout at closing (restrictions apply).

There are a lot more things to be discussed than I can explain here. It is important to get with a trusted Reverse Mortgage Specialist. Include your family, friends or financial advisor in the discussions and required counseling. To those who need this type of loan, it can be a real Godsend. So, what do you think?

Lots of news to B LO C K WAT C H E R BY B L A N C H E LU K E S Had you ever thought about getting to know all your neighbors better? Like one of our most important one is the Moon Valley Country Club. If you are not a member, you may find this informative. The Club has been sitting here in Moon Valley since the late 1960’s. The developers, I am told, were disenchanted with the availability of tee times at the Phoenix Country Club. Remember Moon Valley was not at that time, so they bought the land and developed Moon Valley!

Developers jumped in, bought lots and started building some speculative homes.

Larger lots, on a golf course, and spectacular views of Moon Trail, North Mountain and Lookout Mountain. Imagine yourself standing at the top of the hill just north of Thunderbird on 7th Street. Looking South to South Mt was the budding city of Phoenix in its infancy stage and to the North there was barely a sprinkling of lights.

It certainly took for site, and bravery to buy up the land and create our beautiful Moon Valley community. Model homes popped up on the corner of Hana Maui and Thunderbird Rd. As we grew, the Club had many challenges, the most difficult and expensive was to water the golf course in the desert. It wasn’t until in these past few years that an affordable resolution was worked out. The MVCC is a privately owned course and owned by a company known as CBIGG, with its headquarters in Gilbert, AZ., They have 26 golf courses in the country. With 2 others properties here in AZ, Western Skies in Gilbert and Tres Rios in Goodyear.

Membership is the key to the success of any country club. In talking with the new manager, Brett Evans, I am pleased to know that there is even a Golf Course Management School. Brett, originally from Sioux City, Iowa, is a graduate and brings to us that added expertise. Recently, they added a very talented new Chef, Anthony Olesh. He brings lots of new ideas with alternating menus to be enjoyed. And for those of you that are enjoying the golf course lots, remind your friends and neighbors that the club is a privately owned and NOT a public park. Walking dogs on newly seed greens is heartless. Letting our over energetic kids play in those new sand traps is very costly to the club. These sand traps are also called Bunkers. They are state of the art, not just a pile of sand. All 100 of them. What a shame to hear that there is vandalism.

Let’s not allow it. In the long run, it affects us all, member or not.

Take a Hike - Do it Right!

Phoenix is fortunate to have beautiful desert preserves and hiking trails near just about anywhere you live in the city. The warmer temperatures may mean many of us will be out enjoying what Phoenix has to offer—but always keep safety top of mind.

Every year, more than 200 hikers are rescued from Phoenix desert and mountain parks and preserves! We thank the men and women of our Phoenix Fire Department who perform extraordinary rescues, and our park rangers who educate visitors about safety. We can all do our part to ensure safety. Phoenix’s Take a Hike, Do it Right campaign encourages hikers to follow this simple checklist to help keep from becoming a statistic: Watch the Weather Yes, “it’s a dry heat” – but Arizona’s temperature can be deceiving and deadly. Hike when it’s cool outside. Try early mornings and evenings when there’s more shade.

Dress Appropriately Wear proper shoes, clothing, hat and sunscreen.

Bring Water Hydrate before you go. Have plenty of water—more than you think you need. Turn around and head back to the trailhead before you drink half or your water.

Keep in contact Carry a mobile phone.

Team Up Hike with others. If hiking solo, tell someone your start and end times, and location.

Be Honest Do you have a medical condition? Asthma, heart problems, diabetes, knee or back problems? Don’t push yourself! (Even trained athletes have been caught off guard by getting dehydrated on Arizona trails.)

Don’t Trailblaze Enjoy the Sonoran Desert’s beautiful and undeveloped landscape, but please stay on designated trails.

Take Responsibility Don’t be “that person” – the one who wasn’t prepared, shouldn’t have been there for health reasons or ignored safety guidelines. Be the responsible hiker, who take a hike and does it right!

How Long Are Spokes?

BY LEON, TRY ME BICYCLE SHOP Half the diameter of the rim minus the hub diamenter is a good rule to follow.

But depending on the angle of the spoke to the hub this can change. So a 27 inch wheel has a 12 inch spoke not a 27 inch spoke. There is a lot of confusion on tubes an tires sizes to. Some times measured in metric other times measured in inches. Lots of tires tubes are not marked at all. Makes for some guessing on size. You thought spoke size was easy. Question for next month what is a rim band or rim strip and is it important.

Medical Studies Conclude Chiropractic Maintenance Effective!

JAMEY REICHOW, DC This newsletter is based on the following two bio-medical journal articles: The Nordic Maintenance Care program: Effectiveness of Chiropractic Maintenance Care Versus Symptom-GuidedTreatment for Recurrent and Persistent Low Back Pain:A Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial Public Library of Science (PLoS) One September 12, 2018; Vol. 13; No. 9; e0203029 Influence of Initial Provider on Health Care Utilization in Patients Seeking Care for Neck Pain. Mayo Clinic Proceedings: Innovations, Quality & Outcomes October 19, 2017; Vol. 1; No. 3; pp. 226-233 The aim of the first study was to investigate the effectiveness of chiropractic maintenance care on pain for patients with recurrent or persistent low back pain. In other words, is maintenance care effective for reducing or eliminating chronic low back pain. It was an investigator-blinded, randomized controlled trial using 328 subjects aged 18-65 years, with non-specific low back pain, who had an early favorable response to chiropractic care.

The primary outcome was total number of days with bothersome low back pain during 52 weeks. The status was collected weekly via text messages. Maintenance care is essentially maintaining a person who is out of pain and has increased function.

In this study the maintenance group had a faster reduction in days with bothersome low back pain and reached a pain free state earlier. Maintenance chiropractic care “resulted in a reduction in the total number of days per week with bothersome LBP compared with symptom-guided treatment.” In other words, chiropractic spinal maintenance care keeps people pain free and healthier than merely symptom care. They found that patients who continued to receive spinal manipulation after an initial course of care had lower pain and disability scores at a 10-month follow-up.

The above Mayo Clinic study began by stating: “It is imperative to evaluate the difference in healthcareprocessandoutcomesinpatientsinitiallyconsultingwithnon-pharmacologicalproviders (ie, DCs and PTs)and pharmacological providers (ie, specialists) in comparison to PCPs.The study used a retrospective group of 1,702 patients (69% women) with a new episode of neck pain who consulted a primary care provider (PCP), physical therapist (PT), a chiropractor (DC), or specialist: PCP 44% DC 23% PT 17% Specialist [physiatrists, neurologist] 16% The results are shown in the following chart: Provider

Initial consultation from either a DC or PT decreases the patient’s odds of being prescribed an opioid at 30 days or within any time in the 1-year follow-up period. “We found that initial consultation with a non-pharmacological provider, such as a chiropractor or physical therapist, is associated with a decrease in the downstream utilization of health care services, and importantly a decrease in opioid use 30 days and 1 year after the initial consultation.”

“Recent American College of Physicians low back and Centers for Disease Control opioid prescription guidelines, favor nonpharmacological interventions often provided by DCs and PTs.” “Stronger alignment of PTs and DCs as front-line providers by health care systems may be needed in light of the widespread addiction, which has been identified as a public health epidemic.”

“Physical therapists and DCs primarily treat neck pain with exercise therapy and manual therapy, which has been found to have good effectiveness in treating nonspecific neck pain.”

Compared to primary care physicians: • Chiropractors are the next most often consulted health care provider consulted for the treatment of an acute episode of neck pain.

• In every assessed parameter, chiropractic had the best outcomes, specifically: •• lowest rate of opioid prescription •• lowest use of advanced imaging •• lowest use of x-rays •• lowest referrals for injections •• lowest use (referrals) for surgery (in fact the number was zero).”

think Lincoln has the same problem Mercedes experienced 25 years ago – a “mature” customer base. Mercedes addressed this problem by producing the 190E and then the A, B, C, and G class vehicles at a lower price point, with a more youthful design, to draw in GenZ. As the cost came down, younger folks could purchase the cars. In contrast Lincoln has resisted this urge to produce less costly more youthful vehicles and perhaps they think that is Ford’s job. We talked about this quite a bit and were stunned at how low-key Lincoln really is today. Lincoln also suffers the same fate as Mazda – both seems to be sleeper brands and until you own one – you will never understand why their repeat owner ratings are so good.

Rookie Mom: Thank You for giving me a Voice!

B Y B R I G H I D C O N S TA B L E It’s officially been a year since The Moon Valley Tattler publisher, Dawn Trapp, gave Rookie Mom a voice. Dawn is adamant about helping and healing others by respecting who they are as individuals. Over the past year, I’ve written about making friendships with new moms, dealing with postpartum depression and psychosis, and other random local topics.

When I write, I think of any individual picking up the Tattler at a coffee shop. They’re just there for 20, maybe 30, minutes. They stumble across my column and read a story that is genuine, authentic, and something they -- or someone they know -- can relate.

But, I am a 34-year-old wife, mother, teacher, sister/aunt/daughter, road trip aficionado, foodie, and so much more. Though, I can’t deny there’s a niche with me. Moon Valley is a tight community; we should be able to nourish all perspectives.

As a high-school journalism teacher, I am surrounded daily by whip-smart teenagers who are insanely aware of how the world is changing -- and shaping -- who they are. The cliche is true: The future will take care of us, so we need to value our young community members and respect their voices.

This month, I am proud to feature the unique voice of junior Haider Albazony, a gay 17-year-old with a perspective on the LGBTQ culture that, previously, I had never even considered. Haider is able to summon a perspective built on research and personal experience. This is a piece that moved me to open my eyes to a perspective that I wouldn’t have thought twice about. I know that I’m being vague about Haider’s piece and it’s for a good reason. But hope you’ll take the time to read this valuable article. DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION (DAR) HONOR BLACK MOUNTAIN POLICE COMMANDER THOMAS VAN DORN

BY FROSTY KROENING, NATIONAL DEFENSE CHAIR, CAMELBACK, DAR Camelback Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) are proud to announce that they have selected Thomas Van Dorn, Commander, Phoenix Black Mountain Police Precinct to receive their new Distinguished Citizen award. Present were Sandy Raynor, National Defense Chair for Arizona State DAR, June Pomeroy, Regent, Camelback Chapter DAR, and Sue Roberts, Registrar, Camelback DAR. This is the first of this kind of award in Arizona.

Commander Van Dorn trained in his early years in Phoenix at the police academy. Since then he has served in the South Mountain Precinct, and in multiple police bureaus including Community Relations, Public Affairs, Professional Standards, and Major Offender. He was a detective and served in the career criminal unit.

Black Mountain Precinct is lucky to have such a well experienced and trained officer. The Black Mountain Community Association works with Commander Van Dorn to target problem areas and concentrate on finding ways to alleviate illegal

and troublesome problems for law-abiding families in neighborhoods and businesses.

The Daughters of the American Revolution will be looking for first-responders and citizens who deserve to be recognized. The award carries no financial reward, but is a solid way to honor those who give their time and energy to carry out the Constitutional idea of working together to form a more perfect union. This is the best national defense we can have...our care for each other and our capacity to work together. We are proud to honor Commander Van Dorn.

Teams of researchers assist in doing the genealogy work to identify Patriots who were brave enough to create the Constitution which governs our country. Google “The Constitution of the United States” to find that document. It is truly amazing and it binds us together.

May Brings North Valley BTC another great year

BY ELLEN HOIBY May brings North Valley boys team charity (btc) to the end and beginning of another great year. North Valley btc calendar runs from May 1st to April 30th each year. This past year we have had the honor of graduating 20 seniors who completed an amazing senior project helping ABC Animal Rescue (see their MV Tattler article, March 2019). Our goal in btc is to give young men grades 7th12th, the opportunity to work alongside their parents while volunteering with various philanthropy organizations in the Phoenix area. This year North Valley btc completed 3668 philanthropy volunteer hours and counting. We conduct teamgrade level meetings along with general meetings for the entire league, to provide personal growth opportunities, learning everything from how to start building a resume, helping a friend in need, dealing with peer pressures and avoiding risky behaviors, to learning how to change a tire on a car. We have fun along the way too, enjoying dodge ball, flag football and some roller coaster rides at Castle and Coasters with our buddy classes. We strive to help each teammate build lifelong skills, friendships and an enduring altruistic spirit.

Street New Pavement: Extravaganza!

BY BRET ALDIERI, MVNA PRESIDENT I’m certain everyone has by now noticed that many of our community streets are undergoing much needed resurface work. This can be a source of short term frustration – so my advice is to avoid these construction zones whenever possible. Last year, the Citizen’s Transportation Commission (CTC) advised the Phoenix City Council of ways to adjust the budget to double street funding in the short term. I was part of that process and was happy to see the CTC recognize the severe needs of our streets and for the City Council to act on that need.

Here is the clue that a street is being prepared for new pavement. The sidewalks are modified to be compliant with Federal ADA standards. This translates to installation of ramped walkways at street corners with a bumpy, non-skid surface. Once all the sidewalks improvements are complete, expect street work in the months that follow. If it’s to be new pavement, then there’s a grinder removal of the surface near the edges. This takes a couple of days for a mile long stretch and is normally very messy and dusty. Streets are normally narrowed to one lane, and as such, you can expect traffic delays. Next is the new pavement!

Moon Valley community streets that have already been addressed are: Coral Gables was just paved from 7th Ave. to 7th St., so is now complete from Thunderbird to 7th St. New lane markers including bike lanes have been painted. Joshua Mathews and I worked with the city to get this street on the schedule and for new lane designs to be implemented. Hopefully narrower lanes will yield lower car speeds. The new bike lane is great!

Thanks again to Councilwoman Deb Stark for bringing city street funds to Moon Valley. Deb is also working to get find some funds to add some plants and trees to the Thunderbird road medians; more to come.

In April, my wife and I met with the Christine Mackey, City Director of Economic development and Councilwoman Deb Stark to review Moon Valley needs specifically around local, family friendly restaurants. Christine has her team reviewing our demographics and commercial center vacancies for opportunities. Next step is to meet with developers and local chefs to identify a restaurant cluster opportunity that could serve Moon Valley families. More to come as this develops.

GUHSD Governing Board Awards Thunderbird achievers

BY CIARA ESCALANTE Achievement Above All recipients at Thunderbird High School, a proud member of the Glendale Union High School District, were awarded by the GUHSD Governing Board at their recent meeting on April 17. Every school year, one teacher, student, student group, support staff member and volunteer are selected to be honored for their outstanding accomplishments to the GUHSD community. This school year’s recipients were special education teacher Mike Sidebottom, senior student Danielle Zylstra, NJROTC, horticulturist Jesus Ruiz and volunteers Arvid and Natalie Veidmark. During their recognition, the recipients were presented with an award for their achievement and ongoing commitment to Thunderbird and GUHSD.
