CAN TERMITES AFFECT THE SALE OF YOUR HOME?

In the Real Estate industry you often hear people say, “there are 2 kinds of houses, ones that have termites and ones that will.” The reality is that sub-terranean termites are relatively common in this area. Sellers are often terrified when they find out through an inspection that they have termites. There is no reason to panic. Termites can be treated fairly easily. It’s important, however that they are treated by a qualified pest control company. I recently saw a property that was being treated with a DIY treatment. The sellers thought they were doing everything correctly, but unfortunately, the termites were still doing massive damage inside the walls, out of site of the homeowner. A professional termite company will not only know the correct way to treat them, but will typically offer a warranty should you see evidence of activity in the future. If you have had past activity, it doesn’t hurt to have your home inspected on an annual basis, especially if you are considering selling your home. A termite inspector can tell you if you have areas that may be susceptible to termites and you can repair them prior to listing your property. Areas with poor grading that direct water to your home and areas with wood to earth contact are red flags on a termite inspection. Some loan programs

may require the termite inspection to be shared with a lender, and if there are areas where termites can easily enter the home, they may have to be corrected for the transaction to proceed. It’s best to address those areas before you are under contract and run the risk of losing a potential buyer or being surprised by anything. The important thing to keep in mind is that knowledge of past or present termite activity must be disclosed to a potential buyer, but it’s certainly not a deal killer. Keep receipts for any treatments that you have had done in the past and share them with a buyer. Be open and honest about termite history and be willing to treat them should an inspection show they are present. Landscaping should direct water away from the home and it’s a good idea to make sure that there is no dirt to stucco or wood contact around your property. Be sure to discuss any termite concerns with your agent and don’t stress about them, they shouldn’t be the reason your house won’t sell. That used to be my “business” planning everyone’s vacation, a travel agent, the person you used to count on to introduce new ideas, give raving reviews on the most exciting places I had visited last year, and find the best deals. Boy, do I miss those days!! But your friendly trip advisor, google search and social media is trying hard to keep up, and has vast reach with much more information than we could have ever imagined. The real kicker is deciphering whether it is real or “fake” reviews , photo-shopped, avoiding hidden charges and actually finding the best deal or are they just a very creative ghost writer. Regardless, the world really seems much smaller and accessible than ever before, and the excitement and allure of travel is still dancing rapidly in our minds. e

Vacation is so different for everyone, I just returned from my annual Playa Del Carmen, for 10 days, I NEVER left the resort, boring some might think, but for me, the certainty of a familiar place, people and a routine is just what the Dr. orders for the stage of our lives today. My husband has just finished his “busy” Tax time (CPA), while I am

gearing up for my demanding 10 weeks of special needs summer camp. He wants to “veg”, while I fill my brain with ideas of activities, reading trade tips, and scheming my new costumes for karaoke and skit nights. While I still dream of exotic places, hiking the Canyon, and meeting the natives of foreign countries, those remain on the longer list of places to book. I believe that sometimes a vacation is for true relaxing, no plans, pampering, and meals just delivered to your room, while others time feeding your mind and soul with new and exhilarating adventures is calling. But the most important piece is knowing what you need and searching and filling those desires with just the “perfect” getaway. Can you take 2 days or 2 weeks off to enjoy the riches of vacation, without the guilt of being away is also a very important factor when planning. Added stress of vacations is only defeating the purpose, over spending and over eating of course is never part of the “plan” but in many instances is almost always avoidable! So… I wish you very successful vacations, far or near, but most importantly Safe Travels. Ps… take your Tattler…..we love to share your adventures.

Summertime does not slow down for boys team charity (btc) North Valley. We have just wished our Senior Class a fond goodbye and now our members are busy serving philanthropies in the greater Phoenix area. Each year our btc Inc. Board asks all their Leagues to participate in their annual Initiative. This year’s Initiative is to “Feed the Hungry”. This project is about making a difference in the lives of children, elderly and the homeless who are in need of food, a helping hand, comfort and support. btc North Valley will be participating by hosting events in support of the Initiative at our General Meetings, Team Meetings, and by serving our philanthropies at the Teammate/Coach level. One of the philanthropies that btc North Valley supports is the Desert Mission Food Bank located near the John C Lincoln Hospital North Valley campus. They are the perfect partner to kick off participating in our btc Initiative. Desert Mission put out the call for members of btc North Valley to assist with their special collection of donated food items collected by postal workers at the Sunnyslope Post Office. Our btc members volunteered alongside other groups sorting the collected food into specific bins for Desert Mission Food Bank. Renee Oldani and her son Riley volunteered this year. Renee said that “it is a fast-paced event where you are sorting food and moving the entire time. They have music playing and
everyone is just chatting away, enjoying the time together.” One of the facilitators for Desert Mission Food Bank explained to our members that this 1-day collection by the Postal Service brings in approximately 35,000 pounds of food and it will supply 1-2 weeks of food at the Food Bank. btc North Valley is proud our members supported such a valuable community member who in turn will help combat hunger with the items they received through the postal collection. Desert Mission Food Bank is one of several philanthropies that fulfill the opportunity to serve on behalf of the btc Inc. Initiative. As mentioned above, btc North Valley will be partnering with other organizations that provide outreach services to help fight all aspects of the Initiative. boys team charity is a volunteer service organization dedicated to developing an altruistic spirit in young men through active participation of parents and sons in philanthropic projects in their communities. Generation Z Cars - The kia forte B Y J O H A N S W A R T, C O R N E L S W A R T & J A N S W A R T Kia in South Korean means “to arise to the world from Asia”. Since its founding, the Kia Motors company has built a reputation for quality and reliability, through its many unique car models. Its presence in the United States is well known and Kia has been featured in 10 different Super Bowl commercials. Kia comes with many of the same characteristics as other Asian manufacturers such as reliability, durability, and style. But Kia’s uniqueness is its ability to set itself apart from the rest of the competition adding high tech and sportiness …and that’s where the Kia Forte comes into action. On the surface, the Kia Forte doesn’t appear to be anything out of the ordinary. It starts at $17,790 and goes all the way up to $21,990. This is actually really well priced as it is priced lower than its competitors, the Mazda 3 and the Honda Civic. The Kia got a whole new design in the 2017 model year. The redesign allowed the car to receive additional headroom and an increase in length. For the average sized person the rear seat leg room is ample and even sitting behind a 6’5” person still allows for enough legroom. The trunk space is quite generous as well and folding rear seats allow for larger objects to be loaded in the vehicle. The cars seats are quite comfortable, and all the materials has a nice soft touch to it, even the interior of the lower base models feels upmarket. The Forte has an option for remote start; this comes standard when you upgrade to the upper two models in the range. The FE is well equipped for a base model. It comes standard with lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, and auto emergency braking. Mom and dad, your kids are going to be in good hands without totally breaking the bank. An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, and Apple Car Play and Android Auto come standard so it’s GenZ friendly. Some models are fitted with a system called UVO; we have no idea what UVO stands for, but it is very sophisticated and “futuristic”. Those familiar with Tesla, the GenZ golden child, will know about Tesla phone app allowing the owner to control his/her Tesla heating and cooling prior to entering the car on a cold or hot day - so that the car is just the right temperature when you enter. Well, accord-
ing to Kia, if you have an Amazon Alexa or Google home, using Alexa or Google home, you will be able to do the same and, have remote start the car, and remote car locking ability. This is incredible especially considering the price of this car. The amount of tech you get in this car is quite astonishing and of great value. An Old Dutch saying is applicable to this car. “You win some, you lose some”. This saying means that if you want something, there will always be a compromise. In this car, the compromise is perhaps engine torque at low speeds. The Kia Forte engine adopted some features to save fuel. This means that the engine does not exactly feel powerful in a get-up-and-go fashion. This Kia is sufficiently powered, but it does not have the same torque compared to the Jetta TSI. This means that spirited driving results in a busy sounding engine. However, make no mistake, for normal driving, the engine is more than sufficient and very economical. Each time the Pope visited Korea, he rode in a Kia. Our neighbor, Dean loves his Kia and Matt our gym trainer has replaced his original Kia with another Kia. We see a trend here! Kia is aware that times have changed and hence the integration of home internet connectivity features - often referred to as IOT … which is the acronym for “Internet of Things” just makes sense. Perhaps Kia is now leading the conventional manufacturers by joining the IOT club and being completely “connected”. With IOT, you will be able to remotely schedule your home vacuum robot to clean your house, robot mower to mow your lawn, set your house temperature, start your dryer, set your oven temperature, AND control your Kia to be ready to go! The Kia Forte’s value, comfort, amazing fuel economy and UVO system are as GenZ as football is American. The Kia Forte definitely graduated with the class of 2019 ….. Valedictorian!

AVOID DO-IT-YOURSELF (DIY) ESTATE PLANNING- PT 1 The other day, a very savvy person I met recently came in to take advantage of my no-charge review of existing estate plans. To my surprise, she brought in a do-it-yourself Last Will and Testament. It named an executor and said who would get her estate, just as a Will should. But her Will was completely invalid because it wasn’t properly executed. Besides that, she did not have the other documents needed to assure that if she was incapacitated, someone could step in to care for her and for her finances. I am also often presented with typed up, signed and notarized Wills. They almost universally turn out not to be valid. Surprised? Another situation I often see is the handwritten Will. While we can submit it to the court for probate, it takes longer to get an executor (here we call it a personal representative) appointed, and will undoubtedly cause greater expense and time than a property executed Will. Have you ever heard the phrase “you don’t know what you don’t know”? We all have things we don’t know, and we don’t even know that we don’t know them! A quote from Confucius says, “True wisdom is knowing what you don’t know.” I’ve told the story of my husband’s attempts at being an electrician before, but it bears repeating. Andy is a great handyman. It’s wonderful to be able to ask him to fix things around the house and know he will do it right. When we first moved to our home in Phoenix, he replaced many of the appliances himself, including a cool new stove top. It was great! Well, it was great until he put in the new vent hood. I stood across the kitchen watching him do his usual good job, then walked over to the door for a better vantage point. As he connected the electricity to it, suddenly the light bulbs on the hood burst and the fan spun across the room to hit the cabinet – right where I had been standing not 30 seconds before. “Honey,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm. “Do you think it’s time to call an electrician?” We were lucky. No one got electrocuted due to the error, and I didn’t get my head shaved by the fan. But we definitely came to the conclusion that there are times when it is best to call in the experts. The same is true when you are putting together an estate plan. If you don’t do the job right and you’ve made a mistake or left something crucial out, it may be too late before you – or more likely, your family – finds out. Without proper estate planning, your family will end up in court. If you are alive and incapacitated, they may be required to take you to court to declare you unable to handle your affairs and appoint a

guardian and conservator. That is a public proceeding. If you are deceased, they will likely have to file a probate to transfer your property to your heirs. If your assets will legally go to minor children, the court will be involved in the expenditures until the children turn 18 – at which point the children get all the money turned over to them to handle. All of these things will cause major headaches and great expense for your loved ones. Professionals know things we don’t. As an estate planning attorney, I know what to recommend for you based on your situation, your beneficiaries, your assets and your goals and dreams. You may not know all the ways you can benefit your heirs, or all the ways you can cause problems for them with a poorly drafted (or invalid) will or trust. For instance, did you know that with the right estate plan, you can: • Rest assured that your family or friends can step in if an emergency happens to take care of your health and of your finances. • Avoid probate at your death and quickly transfer your property. • Minimize taxes, including capital gains taxes. • Choose the guardian for your minor children, instead of having a court decide. • Designate that a Trustee manages the money you leave to your children and make sure it’s spent as you wish. • Protect your estate from any creditors of your beneficiaries and from their divorcing spouses. • Assure that your IRA continues to grow tax deferred to provide for your beneficiaries in their retirement. The cost for a guardian or conservatorship if you are incapacitated (or for your minor children if you are gone) and the cost of a probate on your death usually far exceeds the price of an estate plan put in place while you are alive and well. The toll on your family and heirs is something we can’t put a price on. Putting the right plan in place using an experienced estate planning attorney will save your family heartache and expense. START PAIN RELIEF EARLY WITH CHIROPRACTIC BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER, CMT DC When it comes to spinal pain, it’s a big mistake to limit the conversation to adults. In fact, anyone at any age can suffer spinal pain, which makes chiropractic care essential for people of all ages. What’s more, research shows that even in adolescent, teen and young adult populations, chiropractic is effective at relieving pain. Case in point: a study published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice that evaluated chiropractic management of younger people (ages 10-24) with spinal pain. All study participants had spinal pain in one or more of the four regions of the spine (cervical – neck; thoracic – upper- / midback; lumbar – low back; and sacral – bottom of the spine / tailbone). Patients showed “statistically and clinically significant improvement on the numeric rating scale (NRS) in all four spinal regions following chiropractic management,” which included spinal manipulation and other techniques commonly performed by chiropractors under their scope of practice, including mobilization, soft-tissue therapy and other modalities. Simply put, chiropractic relieved some or all of their pain. By the way, while this study evaluated children as young as age 10, research also suggests chiropractic care is effective – and necessary – for children at any age, including infants. Birth / delivery trauma, childhood falls, poor posture, excessive sitting / slumping and a variety of other life events can cause spinal pain. Talk to your doctor to learn more about how anyone can benefit from the power of chiropractic.

GUHSD Governing Board Honors Employees for Years of Service Glendale Union High School District employees including teachers, support staff members, counselors and coaches were celebrated on May 1 at the annual 25-Year Employee and Retiree Recognition Reception. In total, 38 employees were honored including fourteen 25-Year employees and 24 retirees. The GUHSD Governing Board members, superintendent and school principals were present to acknowledge the employees for their outstanding contributions. To honor the 25-Year employees for their years of service, the GUHSD Governing Board and superintendent awarded each with a commemorative lapel pin. In addition, each 25-Year employee will be remembered by having their name with dates of service inscribed on a plaque that will hang in the District Office. This year’s 25-Year employees included John Bee, Ben Vega and Randal Yard from Apollo; Kris Costley, Debra Langley and Tanya Soto from Cortez; Randy Espinoza from Glendale; Jay Montoya from Greenway; Bart Bondeson from Independence; James Bloom from Moon Valley; Michael Fenton, Lynn Murphy and Sheila Novak from Sunnyslope; and Dale Duncan from the District Office. The MVWC Service Project, a 501(c)(3), and charitable arm of the Moon Valley Woman’s Club, awarded the first member sponsored small grants at its April 25th quarterly meeting. These grants, available in amounts up to $1000, assist community projects that MVWC members are either aware of or involved personally and are a recent addition to the larger grants awarded in the fall. Three organizations have been chosen as this year’s recipient’s. The Magic Yarn Project, submitted by Marcia Haarer, awarded $500 to buy supplies to create wigs and hats for children undergoing chemotherapy. All wigs and hats fashioned with this award will be made for children at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital’s Ronald McDonald House Phoenix Coding Robotics, an after school club at the new Phoenix Coding Academy, a public specialty school, sponsored by Karen Lolli has also received $500. Students construct and test robots participating in regional competitions, recently receiving the grand prize for their work at a statewide event. This grant will purchase supplies to build a new upgraded robot for further presentations. Moon Mountain School, sponsored by Pat Clegg, awarded $1000 to assist in implementing a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) computer class that benefits approximately 600 students, K - 6th grade. The goals of the program are to create responsible and safe technology users who think creatively and become problem solvers. Members of the Service Project Board who served this year were Roseanne Boyle, Pat Clegg, Michael Heglaw, Mary Harris and Denny Loback. Bev Carkeek, president of the MVWC, also attended the selection meeting. Thanks to a very successful charity auction, the MVWC can encourage and support local organizations, making a genuine difference in our community. Any Club member can sponsor a community group for a grant. The small grant cycle will accept applications again next January and awards will be made in May. Membership in the Moon Valley Women’s Club is open to women within specific borders of the Moon Valley area. As newlyweds we lived in Germany while my husband served in the Army. After responding to an audition on base for an upcoming production of “Li’l Abner”, we joined the cast as two of Dogpatch’s Scalawags. During the performance, however, I imagined myself the curvaceous Daisy Mae Scragg and he the strapping, handsome Abner Yokum. The next production, “The Lady’s Not for Burning”, a romantic comedy set in the Middle Ages, my husband secured the role of Thomas Mendip, the world-weary discharged soldier. I played Margaret Devize, the mother of two adult sons. Nonetheless, I made the best of it by visualizing myself as Jennet Jourdemayne, the alleged witch who runs off with Thomas at the end of the play. Then came “Biedermann and the Firebugs”, a dark comedy taking place in a town regularly attacked by arsonists. Wearing black tights and sweatshirts, along with red old fashioned fire helmets, we pranced about stage as surrealistic firemen in the style of a classic Greek chorus. What fun! Young and in love, experiencing our first adventure together in Europe with the added thrill of the spotlight. “Oh, my man I (still) love him so!”

The Moon Valley Chapter of National Charity League, Inc. (NCL, Inc.) held their annual Chapter Tea at the Chateau Luxe on Sunday, May 5th. Teas are a time honored NCL, Inc. tradition, and all chapters nationwide are required to participate in one each year. The focus of the Tea is to teach members etiquette, graciousness, self-assuredness, and good manners in social settings. The Tea Committee was chaired by Mimi Marino Christenson. The ballroom was decorated in Cinco de Mayo décor including beautiful balloon art provided by member Rachel Hensiek. Guest speaker Melanie Curtis, author of “How to Fly: Lessons from a Professional Skydiver,” gave an inspirational speech to members on the importance of stretching yourself to overcome fear and obstacles in order to live your fullest life. In addition to the Tea, the Moon Valley Chapter welcomed the new Board of Directors for the 2019-2020 year. The entire chapter is honored to have Ginger McGarity as next year’s president. She was welcomed by current Chapter President Natalie Viedmark. Multiple members were honored with awards including mother-daughter pair Kim and Marley Baker who received the top award for performing the most hours of community service during the 2018-2019 year. NCL, Inc. is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong mother-daughter relationships through community service, leadership development, and cultural experiences. We made a change in 1983 to Prescott, and were there for 16 years. Thought I might retire, but missed my work. I started Moon Valley Chiropractic in the year 2000. My father wasn’t around very much, so it was always important for me to spend my life with someone who valued family. My husband, Adam, is not only an incredible man, but an even better father to our crazy 2-year-old daughter Brynn. As most mothers can attest, we are crazy about good men who love their children. But to have a dad who cherishes and nurtures his little girl, that is invaluable and so incredibly heartwarming to see. So this Father’s Day, here are to the good men who deal with the wild daughters in their lives. • Thank you for picking up the girly-style pull ups on the way home from work because daycare needs them for the next day. And making sure they have Minnie Mouse on them because you know she’ll love it. • Thank you for being stuck with the her for three days in a row when I was exiled upstairs with tonsillitis. • Thank you for always getting up and dancing during every viewing of the Beauty and the Beast. I know it can’t be easy pretending to be the Beast while she pretends to become Belle. • Thank you making the character voices to just to see her laugh, even when she’s picked out the 6th book before bed. • Thank you for special ordering your team’s toddler-sized t-shirt and then putting it on UW college football kickoff day and then posting it all over your social media. • Thank you for the not so (read: extremely) obvious trip to As You Wish to make a homemade painted frame for Mother’s Day. It really is a beautiful disaster. • Thank you for always using your mini-vacuum to clean up after our messy crumbs after dinner. • Thank you for always being the one to brush her teeth. I can’t stand it. • Thank you for always making sure she is booger-free before going into

With that, thank you for always going to her doctor’s appointments -- no matter what. • Thank you for kissing back when she kisses you on the lips. She’s a toddler. It’s not weird. • Thank you for lying down next to the crib and rubbing her back as she sleeps. And then falling asleep yourself. • Thank you for telling me to not give her anymore fruit snacks or BBQ chips. • Thank you for acting like a gorilla and scaring her because you know she likes it. • Thank you for always acting surprised when she hides behind the puppet theater and says “boo!” for the millionth time whenever you come home through the garage. • Thank you for dressing in the family Halloween costume as a knight (you) coming to slay the dragon (your daughter). And finally, thank you for being a role model for how a good man should treat his daughter. And for just being a good man anyway. Thank you for knowing how to love women.

home appreciation T H E W R I T E S T U F F BY G E R R Y J O H N S O N I just read an interesting article on the KCM blog of May 16th. They were talking about home appreciation and how it is projected to soften from 6-7% annual appreciation to the 4% range for 2019. Pulsenomics projected that appreciation for 2019 will be 4.3%. CoreLogic in April cited a 3.7% increase in nationwide home prices for the period of March 2018 to March 2019. This included distressed sales, i.e., foreclosures, short sales, etc. Their “CoreLogic HPI Forecast indicates that home prices will increase by 4.8% on a year-over-year basis from March 2019 to March 2020.” Mark Fleming, Chief Economist of First American, said that data isn’t available yet “. . . but it’s quite likely that price appreciation will accelerate again.” These are all short-term projections and appear to be somewhat subjective. But according to the experts, our home appreciation is safe for at least another year. There are several important points to remember. We recently endured a massive meltdown in the housing market. Investor driven greed pushed home prices to an all-time high. When the crash came it was catastrophic, and many lost their homes and their investments. However, now with a much more reasoned market, prices have rebounded and are now considerably higher than at the top of the crash. The long-term home appreciation mechanism prevailed as it always has. In the short term anything is possible, but in the longer-term home ownership is a very safe investment. As has been said before; you are making a mortgage payment. If you are renting, you are just making it for someone else. Home ownership is the cornerstone for building net worth. Whether your home is appreciating at 3.7% or 7%, it is still appreciating. There is a certain cost associated with having a place to live, you might as well make that cost an investment and not an expense. If you are a firsttime home buyer or you are thinking about upgrading, in the long term it is a very wise, safe bet. Get with your trusted financial advisor, Realtor, and mortgage loan officer and devise a strategy. The first step is to get Pre-authorized. There is no cost for doing that. - Gerry Johnson -

SUMMER CAMP AT GOLDEN KEY RACQUET CLUB NOW IN ITS 29TH YEAR BY CHERYL MILLER This year marks the 29th year that Gold Key Racquet Club, located here in the Moon Valley area, has been holding summer camp for kids, The program was established to give the kids in the area something to do over the summer, and has evolved into a strong developmental program. “The summer Camp Program is many different things to many different people” stated Luis Ridaura, the program’s director. “To some it is a safe place for their kids to be active over the summer months, and to others, it can be a serious training center for competitive junior tennis players.” The club offers two distinct programs for the kids. The first one is the recreational camp. The program is designed for children from the ages of 5 to 14 who are beginner to intermediate players. Best of all no prior tennis experience is needed! The mornings are dedicated to tennis games and instruction. The afternoons vary daily and include swimming, ping pong, games, arts and crafts projects. There are full day and half day programs and even a sibling discount. Another benefit to summer camp that many people may not be aware of is that camp may qualify as a tax deduction for daycare, but the club recommends you check with you accountant or tax planner. The other summer program which the club provides is the Summer Intensives. This program is a high energy training environment for competitive USTA and high school players and is limited to players ages 12 & up, or by prior instructor approval. One interesting thing about this program is that juniors from around the Valley travel to the club to train with this group. In addition players gain additional experience and exposure to current and former college players and guest touring and teaching professionals. This program runs for 3 hours each day Monday through Thursday starting at 10am. In addition Friday match play is included with the program at no additional cost. After training the program moves to the pool where the players can recover and refresh until 2pm when the parents pick up. A dry mouth is a common problem in arid Phoenix, but did you know that it can be a sign of a serious medical condition and can damage your teeth? Dry mouth—or xerostomia (zero-STOW-meuh)—can be caused by factors such as medications, medical treatments, or certain habits, like tobacco use. A disorder known as Sjögren (SHOW-grin) syndrome causes the body’s immune system to attack its own salivary glands as well as other moisture producing glands. Several types of medications, such as those taken to control blood pressure, allergies, or a cold, as well as some antidepressants, can cause a dry mouth. Medical treatments such as head and/or neck radiation can inadvertently damage the salivary glands. Saliva has many important roles related to the body’s oral and overall health. It helps to keep the mouth clean and aids in the process of chewing and swallowing food. Sugary foods promote bacteria that produce enamel damaging acids. Saliva provides a buffer to these acids and helps protect the teeth from dental decay. A dry mouth can have a negative effect on digestion and result in an increase in cavities. If you think you are experiencing the symptoms related to dry mouth, it is recommended you visit your dental office and inform your dentist and hygienist. Together you can help determine the most likely cause of your dry mouth and find a solution. Sometimes a change in the type or dose of medication will resolve the issue. Special oral gels or mouth rinses provide many xerostomia sufferers with relief of their symptoms. Drinking small sips of water while eating may aid with swallowing and digestion. For people who are experiencing a decrease in their saliva production, good oral hygiene is extremely important. Diligence with home care will greatly reduce the chance of developing xerostomia related cavities. Visit your dental team at regular intervals for oral examinations and professional cleanings.

Oddly enough, not all stress is bad. In fact, stress is a vital part of our body’s ability to stay alive. There are inherent physical stresses that help keep our body erect and the walls of our blood vessels from collapsing. Also, the fight or flight response is a physical reaction to a perceived threat and is one of the most important survival instincts we have. This response causes the body to release steroids and neurotransmitters that affect blood flow, digestion, immune system, and so on. This kind of stress is a one time, in the moment, fleeting response to danger. It is known as acute stress. Acute stress is usually followed by a short period of recovery time as the body returns to homestasis. Unfortunately this is NOT the kind of stress most people complain about it; Chronic STRESS is. Chronic stress is reoccurring exposure to a consistent stressful condition causing the physiological stresses in the fight or flight response. However, because the stress either doesn’t go away or isn’t extreme enough to make us run, we never get to relax. The urge to fight or flee is suppressed but the hormones keep flowing anyway. Our bodies have little or no time to recuperate, and we end up in a constant state of low level adrenal arousal. Eventually this causes us to be fatigued, become more susceptible to illness, and a general malaise. THE CONSTITUTION: WHAT IT SAYS, WHAT IT MEANS BY FROSTY KROENING, NATIONAL DEFENSE CHAIR, CAMELBACK, DAR July 4th we will be celebrating American freedoms. These freedoms arise from the Constitution. Recently I urged a group of high school students to open their smart phones and bring up the U. S. Constitution, including the Bill of Rights. Hopefully they will read it and study it and be glad of its contents. What these students will find is that the Constitution guarantees freedoms no other nation’s citizens had in 1776. Many of the world’s people today do not enjoy these freedoms. The Constitution, among other things, guarantees every citizen the freedom to not have military units take over their homes during war (or any other time), the right to trial by jury, free press, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, etc. It is the time of year to review this key document which outlines the format of our way of governing and managing ourselves. My parents charged us kids with the responsibility to keep the Constitution in effect. They detailed the differences between “savagery” (which can also be called “dictatorship”) and “civilization.” Before the Constitution was written, the Founding

I didn’t ‘get it’ at first and really didn’t need anything anyway. In fact, if my classroom needed anything I bought it. I’ve kind of tapped us out financially buying things for my class the last six years, while having our own children in college and still three more years of it for our last son. Now that I’m changing positions and my new classroom has no technology whatsoever, I realized that I needed to look into this thing called Donors Choose. I am super excited about my new position as the ‘gifted specialist’ at my school. I want to do great things for these sweet kids I love. My heart is with them, they are all I’ve ever known as a teacher (not as a sub at our local neighborhood school). I’ve taught in the inner cities of San Diego, Philadelphia, Phoenix and San Jose (in that order), and I know firsthand that all they need is a chance, and someone who believes in them. My students in North Phoenix are not any different. What I know about inner city kids is that they are able to do great things. Many of my former students are professional adults with children of their own and now my friends on Facebook. I was surprised how many of them even wanted to ‘friend’ me because I am a no-nonsense kind of person and teacher. I have a magnet on my whiteboard that says, “Drama Free Zone”…now coming from a Drama major I know that sounds contradictory, but I assure you it is not. I take my job seriously. I am not there, spending all live, long day molly-coddling when I could be home doing crafts and exercising. By Golly these kids are going to learn or I’m moving on. In a sense I am moving on, but at my school. I love my school community; my colleagues and the students, but the gifted program is in need of something more. These kids deserve the chance to be challenged and driven. They

The language is clear and worth reviewing. Once again, we celebrate the document that keeps us a unified nation no matter what forces might try to separate us one from another. No one I know would want to lose the guarantees we have for our basic freedoms. So, it is with great love that we celebrate the 4th of July when the huge American flag survived the night in the battle with the British over Fort McHenry in 1812. Our troops had to fight two wars to ensure our rights and freedoms. The British did not give up the colonies easily. The National Center For Constitutional Studies has the full Constitution on line. need to aspire to more. I don’t know that I’m the one to work that magic, but I’m excited to try. The problem is, without technology, they aren’t prepared for the future. Therefore I have a Donors Choose for chrome books on that website. If you simply google them and then my name, you should be able to see if I still have an unfunded project going on. Google and Verizon have been matching donor’s donations and so far I’ve received 2 chrome books, with 4 more coming, donating hundreds of my own money in order to take advantage of the price matching, but I still need more. My students are not from our neighborhood, some of them are homeless or living on the edge, but they will do great things regardless-if I have anything to do about it, because the ‘magic’ in Moon Valley might start here, but it is far reaching and extends beyond us.

Moon Valley Updates: Streets and MV Golf Course There has been a lot of activity in our community, so it is important to share what we know, and even a bit of what we don’t know yet. This may be a bit cryptic, but please read on. The City of Phoenix has made great progress on street resurfacing. Coral Gables is complete with new narrow lane stripping and a bike lane. Thunderbird is very much improved from Cave Creek Road to 19th Avenue – more to happen westward to 35 Avenue. Greenway Parkway had some issues crop up near 3rd Avenue, and the contractor came back to fix them. MVNA has met with Streets to discuss MV Drive surfacing (potential for the coating treatment), and review of our internal streets where ADA compliant sidewalks are not yet in place. Plans to be shared as they develop. The new raw water pipe is in, but not fully complete. During initial startup, some blockage issues were found, and those have been rectified. I spoke with a representative at Hilgard Wilson (pipe project leader) and he outlined next steps as follows. The next two weeks the engineers will be testing various value on/off combinations to calibrate the system. Then a one month test phase will be conducted where the contractor demonstrates the pipeline operation to the City of Phoenix. Once successfully completed, the City will then take ownership. Unfortunately, there were some delays in the pipeline, so lower cost water planned for April, will not really arrive until June to the three local golf courses. Many residents of Moon Valley, especially neighbors to the Moon Valley Country Club property have been asking how the water will impact the club and the condition of the property. The golf playing surfaces
BY BRET ALDIERI, MVNA PRESIDENT of the main golf course have never been better, especially as a major bunker refurbishment has just been completed. However, neighbors have expressed concern about the periphery of the main course and especially the condition of the Moon Walk course area just south of Tam O’Shanter, north and west of Boca Raton Roads. These areas are not getting regular water so the grass has died, leaving just weeds, dirt and dust that is easily whipped up by the wind. The residents living adjacent to the Moon Walk total 55 homes, and some have organized as a group called the Moon Walk Neighbors Association (MWNA) to address this issue. Sorry for the acronym use, but members of both the MWNA and MVNA have met with Moon Valley Country Club management to express neighbor concerns and get an understanding of what plans will be implemented to address them. We are seeking additional meetings with MVCC leadership to understand potential plans and will share more information as it becomes available in this column and on the MVNA website. WHY ARE WE LETTING THIS HAPPEN?

B LO C K WAT C H E R BY B L A N C H E LU K E S I was shopping at our local Dollar store and while waiting to check out, I was shocked at what happened. There were two people in line ahead of me and one behind me. A young man came into the store, gather up all he could carry and waltzed out the door. Yep, he did not pay! We all stood there in disbelief. So it became very clear to me how really wrong this was. I am learning that this is not an isolated incident. We are on the brink of a PLAGUE. Don’t give me “But this is not my problem” We are all affected by this. Every business has start up costs and overhead. So if the business doesn’t generate a profit, it passes the loss on to the consumer or it closes. So we the consumer incur the higher costs or the loss of the store, that my friends is you and me. These people are so brazen, they even drive around our streets looking for packages left by front doors. They are now called Door Step Pirates. One really good idea is to have a Delivery Box. Perhaps painted similar to the house décor. From the street it just looks part of the house , but when FedEx or UPS approaches the door, they see the Delivery Box. Now the pirates have to walk up to the door to see what is in the box. Well now they are right in line with the cameras we are all putting up. Bingo, a great mug shot for our local PD. If we as a community don’t get seriously active in taking preventive measures, we are doomed. Please join your like minded concerned neighbors at our Block Watch Meeting within the Black Mountain Precinct Meeting Wednesday June 12, 2019 at 6:30 pm at the Deer Valley Community Center: 2001 W Wahalla Ln, Phoenix AZ. 19th Avenue just south of the 101. Ali sat, head in hands. She should be on the fairgrounds by now, but since the breakup, finding her happy had become impossible. Nevertheless, this job paid tuition. She wiped away tears, retouched her makeup and left the tent affirming; if Emmett Kelly’s Weary Willy could please a crowd so could Ailing Ali. Standing at her post, she felt a tug on her pantaloon. Looking down, a curly headed moppet looked up, well loved sock monkey held high. “Meet my Muggsy, Clowny. He always makes me smile.” Ali genuinely beamed, recovering her happy by virtue of a child’s merry eyes.
