BTC VoLunteers with St Vincent De Paul Sunnyslope BY ADA M RU O F On June 9th 2019 the North Valley Boys Team charity league volunteered in a new location for the philanthropy of Saint Vincent De Paul- Sunnyslope dining hall. This was a new experience for us ; especially me since this was my first-time volunteering with the boys team charity league. My name is Adam Ruof and I have just recently joined the Boys Team Charity League. The Saint Vincent de Paul dining hall that is located in down town Phoenix has been there serving meals to hundreds of hungry people every day for decades in Arizona. Recently, they have opened up a new dining hall in the Sunnyslope area. It is much smaller than the dining hall down town but it is conveniently located right off of 10th ave and Dunlap. I had not met any of the other members until today. Cade Hoiby and Grady Funke were there to volunteer as well and great to work with. When we arrived, we were quickly introduced to a few of the regular volunteers and put to work helping with the set up. We helped with various tasks such as

cutting the tomatoes and peppers for the tossed salad, preparing the large bread basket and making a cranberry juice mixture. All of the volunteers were helpful, kind and open hearted in welcoming us into their kitchen as newbies. Once everything was ready, they opened the doors to the community and a line of hungry people formed quickly. It gave me just as much joy to give the food out to these hungry people as it was to see them enjoy it! They were exhausted from the summer heat and hungry. This was a great way for them to cool down and eat a good warm meal and feel human again. All of the diners were polite and thankful for our volunteering. It was even better to see how thankful they were when they initiated in the clean up process. After dinner, all of the volunteers equally shared in the clean up of the entire kitchen and dining hall. The best part of the afternoon was going home with a charitable feeling in your heart knowing you helped out another human; even if just for a short period. I look forward to all of the other opportunities that the Boys team charity league will afford me. I’m so happy that I have joined and suggest that everyone find time to volunteer when they can.

Oh how I dream of summer naps! There is something about summer time and the longing for a cool sun porch, lakeside cabin, comfy beach chair, or soft green grass under a tall tree, kicking back and closing your eyes just for a few minutes. Smelling the fresh air while sugar plums dance in your head. As a nation, the United States appears to be becoming more and more sleep deprived. It is attributed to our busy lifestyles that keep us from napping. Babies, young children and elderly seem to have no problems getting away with planned naps, and by darn always have the excuse of being crabby and irritable when they miss one. Many other counties and cultures have maintained the healthy habit of naps for thousands of years. I’m learning: Different Types: Planned napping (also called preparatory napping) involves taking a nap before you actually get sleepy. You may use this technique when you know that you will be up later than your normal bed time or as a mechanism to ward off getting tired earlier. Emergency napping occurs when you are suddenly very tired and cannot continue with the activity you were originally engaged in. This type of nap can be used to combat drowsy driving or fatigue while using heavy and dangerous machinery. Habitual napping is practiced when a person takes a nap at the same time each day. Young children may fall asleep at about the same time each afternoon or an adult might take a short nap after lunch each day.
Benefits Naps can restore alertness, enhance performance, and reduce mistakes and accidents. A study at NASA on sleepy military pilots and astronauts found that a 40-minute nap improved performance by 34% and alertness 100%. Naps can increase alertness in the period directly following the nap and may extend alertness a few hours later in the day. Scheduled napping has also been prescribed for those who are affected by narcolepsy. Napping has psychological benefits. A nap can be a pleasant luxury, a minivacation. It can provide an easy way to get some relaxation and rejuvenation. Now of course there are a few negative effects, like the inability to sleep regularly at bedtime, leave you groggy, or disoriented when you wake. But it seems more important are the stigmas that are associated with naps: laziness, lack of ambitions, becoming elderly, or sick. Well, its summer, and that’s when I crave those little cat naps, as for finding the time….. well that’s another story for another month. Sweet dreams, and enjoy your summer naps.

Summer Meditations BY FROSTY KROENING What do egg cups have to do with summer meditations? Plenty. Here is the “egg meditation” we watched our grandfather perform long ago at the summer cabin in the wilderness at Lake George, New York. My dear white-haired, bespectacled Grandpapa waited for water to boil. When it did, he slid an egg into the water and turned off the gas burner. He put the timer on for four minutes. He made toast on another burner on a metal stand. With the toast on a plate, he listened for the timer bell. When it rang, Grandpapa perched the egg on top of his favorite egg cup. His knife gently chopped a circle around the upper middle of the egg shell. The upper part of the egg was sliced off and placed carefully on the toast. Out on the porch overlooking the lake, Grandpapa’s entire focus was on eating the salted and peppered lower part of the egg. He placed the empty shell on his plate and turned the egg cup over to the small side and finished the smaller part of his egg. Then Grandpapa put his own buckwheat honey on the toast and ate it so not one drop escaped. His morning egg meditation ritual was lovely to watch. He radiated love and gratitude for life’s small pleasures. It is seldom that we see egg cups these days. Life is fast now. Egg cups are perfect for contemplating how miraculous a simple egg is. This summer I could follow Grandpapa’s model. However, I no longer own an egg cup. (I have, however, meditated over half a cantaloupe as one doctor recommended for breakfast.) More likely I will use headspace. com. It provides timed meditations. What is your summer meditation?

GenerationZ Cars - The Alfa Romeo Giulia B Y J O H A N S W A R T, C O R N E L S W A R T & J A N S W A R T When people decide on a vehicle to buy, they base their decision on logic or emotion. A logical purchase involves the crafting of certain criteria and then looking for the car that provides the best fit for the defined criteria. In contrast, an emotional purchase is usually based on nothing that is logical but rather esthetics and of course, very importantly … color. Until now I thought these were the only two trains of thought that got a new car in the garage, but that is not true. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, imagine somebody asked you the following: Do you want a car that has poor interior quality? Or do you want a car that has terrible ergonomics? Or do you want a car that has poor reliability? Or do you want a car that may or may not start when you turn the key? For these questions the answers are a resounding NO! But, then you hear an Alfa driving past and go to look at one in the show room, suddenly you ignore the imperfections and fall in love. Therefore, the third decision is not logical or emotional, it is undefined – just like love. Love is strange as it ignores the imperfections but that undefined something is what makes you select it and hold on to it – very Italian. The only car manufacturer that falls under this category is Alfa Romeo. The Giuliettas’, the GTVs’, the Spiders’, Alfasuds’, Alfettas’ = passion, and they were all sporty two or four door vehicles that stirred up undefined emotions. Similar to a human relationship, departing from your Alfa is like going through a divorce, you feel either relief or an emotional roller coaster, sometimes associated with regret. However, the Alfa today is not the Alfa of yesterday (with the exception of design quirks) and Alfa quality and reliability today is on par or better than the best in the industry. Does this mean that Alfa lost its character? We spent some time with an Alfa Giulia to see whether it still carries that same Alfa love. The Alfa Romeo Giulia starts at $38,590 but that is just a number, the price can jump up as fast as you tick boxes. The car comes standard with automatic dual-zone climate control, a 6.5 inch display (optional 8.8 inch infotainment) screen, 3D navigation, an eight speaker audio system, and heated performance
front seats with lumbar and thigh support. The Giulia is also available with a choice of wood, aluminum, or a carbon fiber interior trim. The leather is of a very high quality and comfortable, the trim also has a very nice touch, and the roof liner is alcantara (a soft suede-like material). This Alfa’s red interior and materials fell just short of fantastic. Under the hood, the engine looks stylishly packaged – very Alfa. It come standard with a 2.0 L turbocharged 4 cylinder that has 280 horsepower and 306 lb-ft of torque and is coupled with an 8 speed automatic gearbox. The ride quality is incredibly smooth, and it reminded us of the Jaguar XF RS we drove earlier this year. Though quiet and comfortable, if you put your foot down, this Alfa is quick. The DNA (nice touch) system is Alfa’s drive mode selection where D is Dynamic (sport), N is Natural (daily commute/eco), and A is for All weather. To make the most of the dynamic mode, one must select manual mode and use the Formula 1 type paddle shifters which we found to be lots of fun to use. The rear seating is decent, but it is most certainly not for taller folks. Unfortunately, the sun roof robs them of much desired headroom; similarly the trunk is relatively small. The B-pillar is placed next to the driver’s and front passenger’s shoulders and you have to look around the pillar to see outside. Then there’s the turn signal stalk that is hidden behind the giant transmission paddle shifters why?! In contrast the engine sounded great. The handling was out of this world. The Quadrifoglio model housing a superb 2.9L twin turbo V6, set the fastest lap for a saloon car around the German notorious Nuremburg ring! The front seats were superb, driving the car felt like you become a part of it – or the Alfa become part of you ... this is when we realized – this is a true Alfa Romeo. Yes the Alfa is not perfect, but it has that undefined something that makes you forgive its faults and simply love it for the car it is!

Avoid Do-it-Yourself Estate Planning - Part II With the number of online and do-it-yourself (DIY) legal providers continuing to grow, some individuals may wonder if they should just do their estate planning documents themselves. The advertising is seductive: these websites claim that attorneys use similar forms, that the cost is significantly less than hiring an attorney, and (sometimes) that the websites and kits are created by attorneys. In addition, most people think their estates are not complicated enough to justify hiring an attorney. Estate planning attorneys and other financial professionals will tell you from experience that DIY estate planning can be very dangerous. While completing the forms may seem easy and straightforward, a single mistake or omission – even just one word that is wrong or missing – can have far reaching effects and complications that are disastrous for the estate or the family. These often come to light only after the person is incapacitated (and can’t fix it) or after their death. Many clients who bring to me a DIY plan come in because they are worried the plan doesn’t serve their needs. I find that they don’t know all of the options available to them for planning. Often, they haven’t even considered what would happen if they are incapacitated. The plan they have put together with the kit or online service is frequently missing key pieces and fails to serve the most basic functions of an estate plan. Doing the DIY plan can result in unnecessary court proceedings and heartache and fighting for your family. Those contemplating the DIY route should consider the following: Legal Expertise: An experienced estate planning attorney has the technical expertise to draft documents correctly. The documents are crafted to fit your situation, and are time-tested by the many clients I have helped in my many years of law practice. An experienced attorney knows what to change and how to change it to make your plan work the way you want – and often will have suggestions that can make your plan even better than what you had in mind. As an Arizona attorney, I understand the technical terms and legal requirements of this state’s laws. Because laws vary greatly from state to state, a DIY program or kit may not tell you everything you need to know. Counseling: Attorneys are called “counselors at law” for a reason. Throughout my career I’ve counseled many families. I’ve witnessed the results of both proper and improper planning. An experienced attorney can help guide you through delicate decision making, including who should be the guardian of your minor children, how to provide for a child or elderly parent who has special needs without interrupting
B Y L I B B Y B A N K S , P L L C , E S TAT E P L A N N I N G
valuable government benefits, how to provide for your children fairly (which may not be equally), and how you can protect your children’s or grandchildren’s inheritance from creditors and irresponsible spending. Explanation of Intentions: If there is any question as to what your intentions were after you have passed, an attorney who counseled you will be able to answer those questions from personal knowledge of what you wanted. This unbiased interpretation from someone who does not stand to benefit from your plan can help to avoid costly litigation and family arguments. Coordination of Assets: A will only controls assets that are titled in your name, like a house or car. You probably have other assets that are controlled by a contract, joint ownership and/or beneficiary designations; these include IRAs, 401(k)s, joint bank accounts, and life insurance policies. A will does not control these assets. When you work with an experienced estate planning attorney, she knows how to coordinate each part of your estate so that all of your assets are distributed the way you want to those you want to have them. Tax Planning: While the federal estate tax exemption is currently $11.4 Million per person, that could change. An experienced attorney can guide you through the options to prepare for such a change. Income tax planning should also be part of your plan. Proper estate planning can reduce capital gains taxes for your beneficiaries. Improper handling of IRA and 401(k) beneficiary designations can be costly in income tax payable by the beneficiary. Careful professional planning is a must in order to avoid paying too much in taxes. Complexity and Cost: Most people think their estate planning will be simple. But the reality is that our estates are personal, and most people do need some personalized planning…and you may not know just what you need without the guidance and counseling of an experienced attorney. It is far better to spend a little more now and make sure your plan is created correctly than to try to save a few dollars and have things turn out badly (and probably far more expensively) later. You won’t be around then to straighten things out or keep the family peace. Don’t you think you owe it to those you love to plan for their care the right way? To schedule a no charge consultation or review, please call my office at 602-375-6752 or visit my website and fill out our form at http://libbybanks.com/schedule-an-estate-planning-meeting/.

TO NOT KILL A MOCKING BIRD by Roseanne
“What am I going to do, Dad? That’s the third time this week that crazy bird attacked Daisy,” Melissa reached down to pat the head of the family’s Bassett Hound. “Poor thing never knows what hits her.” “Mocking Birds are like that, honey, aggressive when nesting.” Dad said, buttering toast. “Change your route for a while.” “And let a bird run my life? Pass the butter, please. No way, Dad.” “Your taking this personally, Melissa,” Mom said, carrying a frying pan to the table. “She’s a mother protecting her young. It’s nothing against you or Daisy.” “I have a great idea, Mel,” Billy accepted his second helping of scrambled eggs before holding up an invisible rifle. “Next time, I’ll follow behind with my BB gun. POW! I’ll blow that sucker right out of the sky.” “You’ll do no such thing, William.” Mom said. Billy grinned and winked at his younger sister. “I’d never hurt the bird, Mom. Just stop it from dive bombing our dog.” “You’ll think of something, Melissa. For now finish your breakfast. I don’t want you missing the bus again. Mom doesn’t need to be late for work because she has to play chauffeur,” Dad said taking his last sip of coffee. “I have to go. Have a fun day, all.” He kissed his wife then left the table. “Is it all right if I leave too, Mom. I told Betty I’d be out at the stop early so we can talk about our Science Fair project. We want to start on it after school today.”
“Go ahead but take your toast.” Melissa left the table, toast in hand and dilemma planted firmly in her mind. It wasn’t till late afternoon that a solution blossomed. That evening, starting her walk with Daisy, Melissa had her plan in place. While washing her hands at Betty’s she had spotted a water pistol resting on the sink belonging to one of Betty’s brothers. Apparently, her bratty brother had the right idea, just the wrong choice of weapon. Fully loaded, bounce in her step, Melissa approached the tree containing the nest. As she expected, Mrs. Mockingbird came soaring dawn. Ordering Daisy to sit, Melissa waited for the bird to fly close enough to make contact. Completely focused on her task, she watched the bird approach, seemingly in slow motion; countdown, three, two, one. The stream of water struck the bird’s breast. Mama gave out a shriek appearing to stop in midair, looking as if trying to figure out what had just happened, before heading back to her tree. Melissa waited, anticipating a second attack and sure enough it came. She held up the gun, and once more hit her target. Would there be a third attempt? After waiting a short while the bird reappeared, but never reached firing range. She only came close enough for an indignant squawk of warning before u-turning back. Mission accomplished, Melissa smiled. She tucked the gun in her waist band, patted Daisy’s head, and continued their walk.
FLY AWAY
by Martha Santos
Feeling sorry for myself I turned away from the hospital wall and its medical paraphernalia. The accident had broken me in pieces, leaving pain as my constant companion. Lying in bed, body held together with bandages, caring for myself had become impossible. It hurt even to breathe. Staring out the room’s only window, I startled when a bird smashed into the glass. Reflexively, my eyes shut, tears oozing from their corners. Already floundering in depression, this would surely pull me under. When I opened them the still feathered body laid motionless on the outer sill. I should never have looked away from the wall. About to turn back I paused. I watched as in one swift movement, the bird popped up on its feet, preened, shook itself off then flew away as if nothing had happened. My lips began expanding into a smile, getting ever wider, at the realization that I had just been given a sign; the first glimmer of light in my dark world. That’s the moment I knew, one day, I too, would rise up and fly away, leaving this all behind.
The incident Martha described in this piece occurred thirty years ago. Sunday, June 16, Martha Santos passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family. She has indeed flown away, only this time on Angel’s wings.

NICHOLAS WARNER, CMT DC Processed foods is an enormous buzzword, both because increasing evidence implicates processed foods in a variety of negative health outcomes; and also because we are continually faced with them at every turn, despite this increasing evidence of their harm. In a nutshell, we keep learning how dangerous they are; processed food manufacturers continue producing and promoting them; and the majority of us keep eating them. Something has to give. So far, it’s been our health. Let’s take a different approach, since the current approach doesn’t seem to be working. Here are five ways to avoid processed foods – even when we’re surrounded by them at every twist and turn. Step #1: Clean Out Your Pantry (and Fridge / Freezer). Avoidance always begins with cleansing – getting rid of the things you need to avoid. If they’re in the home, they’re too close to you. If white flour is the first ingredient, why are you eating it? If it contains added sugar (especially if it’s a food that shouldn’t require any), why are you eating it? If it contains large amounts of sugar (and little else) – soda, candy, etc. – why are you eating it consistently? If it’s “ready to eat,” even though it clearly involved a process to get to that stage, why are you eating it? These are the primary culprits, but there are many more, and they’re likely lurking in your cupboard, fridge and freezer. Find them and get rid of them. The financial cost you assume will be more than compensated by your health savings. Step #2: Learn to Read Labels. Now that you’ve got a clean house, how do you avoid replacing the items you’ve tossed with more of the same? Learn to read labels and understand what processed means. We’ve already talked about white flour, for example; but do you know “enriched wheat flour” isn’t really any better? “Whole grains” is what you’re really looking for, and it has to one of the first few ingredients. And what about sugar? You’ll be amazed at how many foods contains high-fructose corn syrup; sometimes as the first ingredient (check out your favorite BBQ sauce). When you think about what’s processed and what’s not, don’t just think about ingredients; also consider what it took to get that food to your table. If it went through an extensive manufacturing process... (See Step #3) Step #3: Avoid Boxes and Bags. With a few exceptions, foods that come in a box or a bag have been processed in some fashion. They’ve certainly been on a journey that’s taken them far away from the original food and deep into the

processed world. Consider something as innocent as a whole-wheat cracker, for example. Whole wheat; should be good for me. Not so fast. How much fiber has been stripped out? How much oil and sugar has been added? Do they look anything like “whole wheat” anymore (color, texture, etc.)? What about frozen meals? We’re betting the spaghetti and meatballs you’re drooling over isn’t the same spaghetti and meatballs you could make at home; not by a long shot. Step #4: Use Your Dinner Table More. Fast-food restaurants are notorious providers of all things processed. Burgers, fries and shakes, oh my! All loaded with empty carbs, fat, sugar and sodium; and just as important, missing the key nutrients your body needs. Not to mention the process that brought the foods from a warehouse in one part of the country to your local fast-food joint. So use your dinner table more (and your dinner-making skills). The only “process” in the meal you make from scratch will be the process you use to create it! Step #5: Make Your Grocery Store Smaller. Even the biggest grocery store only has a few areas that should interest you if you’re truly dedicated to avoiding processed foods. First stop: the produce section – whole, raw foods in their unprocessed form, chock full of vitamins and minerals. Next stop: the meat / fish department for lean, antibiotic- and hormone-free chicken or turkey ,and omega-3-rich fish with healthy fats (salmon, etc.). If you’re a vegetarian / vegan, head to the grocery aisle that stocks alternate protein sources such as beans, lentils, nuts, etc. (also good options even if you’re a meat / fish eater). The only other aisles that should be on your trip: the dairy aisle (at least for low-sugar yogurt with probiotics and some type of milk - cow’s, almond, soy, etc.) to help ensure adequate daily calcium intake; the cereal aisle (not for most cereals, which are high-sugar and low-nutrition, but definitely for raw oatmeal); and back to the bean aisle, which is often where you’ll also find rice (the whole-grain variety). Those are your staple aisles. Everything else is generally processed-food-packed, waiting to tempt you. No discussion of processed foods would be complete without pointing out the difference between minimally processed foods and the foods we’re talking about here. Even bagged spinach has been minimally processed for convenience, if you think about it. Bagged spinach is not the problem, although if you can, choose a bunch of fresh spinach instead. Ready-to-eat foods are the most processed – microwavable meals, anyone?

Recovering M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C BY D EB B IE ER BS TO E SSER Facebook is great for supplying me with useful posts that I make into smart board screen savers and talking points with my students. A recent one about teachers not being ‘off for the summer” because we’re “recovering” is funny, but not accurate. I’ve been to work, actually working at least 6 times since we got out and last week I attended an all-day conference that cost me $50 and wasn’t even very good. Money is valuable and hard earned around here. After years of poverty, I still don’t part with it easily. I worked 3 jobs simultaneously all 4 years Gary was in Medical School, then 2 jobs during his internship and residency. Paying back the loans took 14 years and yet staying home with the children we were finally able to have was important to us, so we really never ‘got ahead’ like so many of our peers. Peer pressure is more real than most people are even aware of and it continues into adulthood. We compare our homes, cars, clothes, bodies, kids…it’s ridiculous really. Yet we all do it. That song, “Jesse’s Girl” is stuck in my head! He’s comparing himself to “Jesse” and wishing he had that girl. Honestly, you can ‘wish’ all you want, but it’s a woman’s choice. Why is that concept so difficult for people to grasp? I thought it was a great song in 1981 and that Rick Springfield was adorably sexy. Now I listen to Christian music and am spending too much time retracing my steps wondering where I heard random songs like that one, because it wasn’t on my radio. Was it in a store? A passing car? Pilates! Pilates has been life changing. The core workout is amazing and so many of those ladies have become friends. Men like my husband are getting into it too and improving their golf game. It takes more than exercise to maintain one’s girlish figure though, it takes proper eating and while I do so love to eat, I try hard to make sure what we’re eating is healthy. I’ve become somewhat of a health freak. I think I might be driving my family a little cray cray. I get these great articles emailed to me and I forward the good ones on to them. Everything from safer ways to kills weeds to proper ways to grill food-don’t crispy critter it, to the best nuts for weight loss-pistachios, the best oil-avocado and olive for cooking, but coconut for pulling, and the best chocolate. All that noise about how good chocolate is for us, but no one’s really reading
www.moonvalleytattler.com
the fine print on that one. The chocolate in candy isn’t good, they’re talking about the organic cacao before it’s processed and sugar is added to it. However, you can’t convince someone who’s determined to eat the bad stuff, so I don’t bother. Oh my goodness, those robo calls are so bothersome. I don’t know what in the world makes these people think that it’s ok to constantly call and pester. A short time ago I was bothered by my vision, but the cataract surgery I was so afraid of was truly not the big deal I thought it was. Being able to see is absolutely amazing. In fact, there’s a bit Too Much Information when it comes to watching tv. I really don’t need to see every pore on every face. It kind of takes away from the storyline. I don’t want to complain, because it’s better to be able to see clearly than to not. I am not ever going to get all my summer projects done if I don’t stay off of Facebook! Yesterday I took a break the entire day from it and got so much done. The box of important papers from being the executor of my mom’s estate, needed to be disposed of, and I finally did. Now I have the time to follow up with a company who owes her estate money, but all I really want to do is be done with the madness and relax; do my crafts and read some books. My mind is an erratic thing. I have too much going on in my head, too much to say, too many thoughts and ideas. I couldn’t settle on a theme for July’s MVMMoon Valley Magic until I remembered the quote about teachers ‘recovering’ over the summer. I don’t feel recovered. I think I need the routine and schedule of my job to keep all the haphazard thoughts in my head from going off on a tangent of hyper, weirdness. Gary frequently asks me what I’m thinking, maybe because I have such a confused look on my face. I don’t dare him; he wouldn’t be able to handle it! I’m recovering from a busy school year and spiraling into random thoughts with free time I don’t usually have, flitting from one memory or idea to another. Welcome to my brain!

A South American Adventure
by Paula Cullison
Our South American adventure took a fair amount of preparation, as I wanted to make sure we could meet the locals. My Spanish language skills were adequate. This five-week trip to Argentina, Uruguay and Chile enabled us to see the sights and meet the people. Our two weeks in Buenos Aires was action packed. The city is known for the Tango and one could dance ever night of the week. From our hotel located in the Recoleta section, we focused on museums, parks, the Recoleta Cemetery (Eva Peron), fairs, markets and the colorful neighborhoods of Palermo, La Boca and San Telmo. We toured the city by foot, bus and Metro. Prior to our trip and with the help of a web search, I located an English language meet-up group. They were most welcoming and we attended two Friday evening sessions. We took a day trip to Tigre on the Delta which was very relaxing. Our three-day trip to Iguazu Falls (five times the size of Niagara Falls) was an awesome experience. Our next stop was Uruguay. We took the ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia, a UNESCO Heritage site, and spent two days wandering the cobble stoned streets. From there we took a coach bus to Montevideo where members of the SERVAS organization, to which I belong, became our most attentive city hosts. Finding a hotel with a view of the Rio de la Plata was a bonus. Our week was filled with a welcome party at the home of our new SERVAS friend, a concert, trip through the marketplace, walking tour of the city, visit to the Gaucho Museum. We also took a day trip to Punta del Este where the Rio de la Plata (widest river in the

world) meets the Atlantic Ocean. We flew from Montevideo to Santiago, Chile where we stayed for two weeks. Our hotel room on the 18th floor looked out onto Cerro Santa Lucia, one of the three main hills of this city. On a four hour walking tour of the city, we encountered Plaza de Armes, Cathedral, Post Office, la Moneda, Belles Artes Museum, Forestal Park, crossing the river, the various neighborhoods, Plaza Italia, Neruda´s home-la Chascona, the Bella Vista barrio, La Starrias neighborhood, Pio Nono, Recoleta, Teatro Municipal, Plaza de la Constitucion, impressive Parliament building, and Cerro San Cristobal. We took two separate day trips to visit Pablo Neruda’s other homes: La Sebastiana in Valparaiso and Isla Negra. During our stay, we spent time with the sisters of my InterNations friends. One of whom invited us to celebrate Chilean Independence Day at her home. That was so very special. We also met with another SERVAS member and the sister of a friend who has headed a non-profit in Santiago for the past 32 years. I was also able to meet formally with one of the directors of the Government’s Ministry of Women and Gender Equality, as well as attend an indigenous women’s crafts festival. We discussed an array of mutual concerns. Meeting the local people when one travels is the best part of any trip. Life offers us many interesting and unexpected opportunities. Chiropractic Patients cost insurance companies less BY DR. JAMEY REICHOW, DC I’ve wondered for years why insurance companies were reluctant to approve and pay for chiropractic services. My amazement stems from first hand experience relieving patients’ symptoms while also preventing more expensive testing and treatment by the traditional medical (or allopathic) methods of care. Expensive diagnostic imaging, prescription, and surgery have become less attractive to both patients and their insurers. An article in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) titled, “Cost of Care for Common Back Pain Condition Initiated with Chiropractic Doctor vs. Medical Doctor/Doctor of Osteopathy as First Physician” studied this issue. The article is a retrospective claims analysis of Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of Tennessee’s intermediate and large group fully-insured population. The researchers identified BCBS members with low back pain claims based on diagnosis used by MDs and DCs alike. During a two year period, 85,402 members met this criteria. The total cost of each episode of low back pain was determined by calculating the cost paid by the insurer for all services provided during the episode by the same and other providers. The study found that those patients that initiated care with a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) cost the insurance company $452.33 versus $1037.04 for patients that saw their medical doctor first. This represents an approximate 55% savings when patients sought care for low back pain from a chiropractic physician as compared to an allopathic provider. These results suggest that insurance companies that restrict access to chiropractic care for back pain, inadvertently, pay more. The study reinforces what chiropractor see on a daily basis. Conservative chiropractic care often helps patients avoid or reduce costly and invasive treatment methods such as prescription drugs and/or surgery. The president of the American Chiropractic Association made the following statement, “ The study demonstrates the value of chiropractic care at a critical time, when our nation is attempting to reform its health care system and contain runaway costs.” Well said. So we’ll continue to do our part by providing an effective, less costly, and more conservative approach to back pain!

Are Reverse Mortgages Getting a bum Rap? T H E W R I T E S T U F F BY G E R R Y J O H N S O N I have read several articles recently that start out bashing Reverse Mortgages and end up extolling their benefits. Most of these articles are designed for mortgage professionals and financial planners, and don’t get to the general public. However, recently a front-page article in the Arizona Republic entitled “Make sure heirs OK with reverse mortgage plans” very succinctly laid out the pros and cons. To clarify, we are talking about the FHA version which is called a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM). Russ Wiles, in his article, states that a Reverse Mortgage is a good source of needed cash but can lead to foreclosure because of its complexity. In analyzing the downside of this loan, most of the challenges come after the borrower vacates the property because of death or health issues. Yes, the RM must be paid off once the borrower no longer resides there. If a nonspousal family member is living there, they will be forced to pay off the RM to remain, or sell the property and move. The good thing is that remaining equity goes to the borrower or estate, and if the home won’t sell for the amount of the indebtedness, the shortfall is covered by FHA, not the heirs or estate. Foreclosure can be a good thing. If there is not a lot of equity to contend with, the heirs can just walk away and no one’s credit is affected. Foreclosures generally occur for one of three reasons: The death of the borrower, Failure to maintain the property, or Failure to pay property taxes and/or hazard insurance. The article doesn’t mention the LESA – Life Expectancy Set Aside. Each new RM is evaluated for the willingness or ability of the borrower to pay taxes and insurance. The lender can insist that an escrow type account (LESA) be set up to pay these items. This is funded from the proceeds of the loan and will restrict a portion of the available funds. There is also a voluntary form of this provision, for those who do not want to contend with this responsibility. Since 2014, a provision has been added to allow a non-borrowing spouse to remain in the property after the death of the borrower. This generally doesn’t apply to loans initiated before that date. Here are some advantages that are usually mentioned at the end of these articles: With a Reverse Mortgage the borrower doesn’t have to pay monthly Principal and Interest charges, thus they instantly have more expendable income. It may allow the borrower to delay taking Social Security benefits, thereby upping their benefit amount. It may allow the borrower to delay taking cash out of traditional IRAs, which may lessen taxes and avoid penalties. With well-healed investors it may provide an alternate source of income during a market turndown. They may not be forced to sell off assets at inopportune times. Counseling, by a HUD approved counselor is a requirement. Heirs are encouraged to attend the session. Estate Planners are encouraged to become super knowledgeable about this valuable tool. It is also essential to consult with a knowledgeable mortgage loan officer. The more you know, the easier it is to make a decision. Bum rap – Good rap, you be the judge.
Do you know Your Block Captain? If not, why not? B LO C K WAT C H E R BY B L A N C H E LU K E S One of the unique qualities of living in our beautiful Moon Valley is the Block Captain tradition, eighty-five of them. . It was set up in the late 1960’s as the budding Moon Valley was starting to grow. Initially as people moved into the community they would be welcomed by someone on their block. We even had a neighborhood coffees to get acquainted. Trying to keep that tradition alive has proved daunting, with most people as busy as they seem to be. Unfortunately as leadership changed each year new people did not know or maybe didn’t care so the ball has been dropped so to speak. Yours truly as founder and coordinator all these years has found great frustration seeing this happen. Many attempts to keep this concept alive has fallen on deaf ears. I guess if Moon Valley wants this tradition HELP is needed. So Moon Valley this is a call for action !. You have my email address. “moonvalleybw@cox.net” or blanchelukes@cox.net. Great communities don’t just happen, they are created. We are unique. A volunteer homeowners association, very reasonable dues, affordable security is available by choice, great location, terrific views, and a beautiful Country Club with all kinds of amenities..There is a very active Women’s Club providing opportunities to pursue your interests with like minded residents i.e. book club, hiking, crafts etc etc. Don’t you think putting effort into our community is time well spent? This is one of our largest investments, our homes. Keeping the physical property up is only part of our responsibility. Protecting the integrity of our community climate provides a safe environment to raise our children and protect our property values. ” Many hand make light work” was a saying I grew up with. Contact me and lets brainstorm how we can pull together to privatize it or should we let it die? Restarting of Black Mountain Precinct Meeting will resume the 2nd Wednesday in September 11th, 2019 at 6:30 pm at Deer Valley Community Center 2001 W Wahalla Ln, Phoenix 19th Avenue just south of the 101 Blanche Lukes email at moonvalleybw@cox.net

Rookie Mom: How to grub your way off 7th Street during Summer! B Y B R I G H I D C O N S TA B L E I am a downright, die-hard, and damned foodie. And I’m an Arizona native. Although my husband and I have lived in Moon Valley since 2015, it has garnered a few of our favorite family eats. Time definitely slows in the Constable household during summertime. As a teacher, I have a few weeks off to spend with my toddler, Brynn, and let’s face it, it’s North Phoenix: The 110-something degree heat slows down everything. Here are our favorite spots (one we tried out just for you) that will speed up the taste buds during your summertime. Little Miss BBQ on Sunnyslope If you read The Tattler, you’ll know that I’m an Arizona native who grew up in Tempe. Little Miss BBQ has a serious reputation in the ASU college town. So much so, that the wait typically lasts 2-3 hours tops. The hours cannot be relied upon since people wait for so long and then buy so much! Luckily, the owners opened a second location to balance the shift and it has been a Godsend for North Phoenix. True fan folk have learned to drive the 30 minutes north so they could wait anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour (certainly not as steep as Tempe). Stop by the joint on 7th Street and Dunlap (really off Townley Ave.). The prices are a little more than I would suggest, but every. Single. Item. is singularly delicious. Again, a big win for North Phoenix! Mom’s Picks: Pulled pork sandwich with regular sauce, side of ranch-style beans (YUM!), and Bekke’s pecan pie. Dad’s Picks: Pulled pork with spicy sauce, potato salad (his YUM!), and mac-and-cheese.
Brynn’s Picks. MAC-AND-CHEESE FOREVER! Seriously, my daughter is obsessed. Bottomline: This place is a freaking treat. A treat that I will get at least once a month. (And that’s a lot for us.) Scramble Here are two conversations that I had about Scramble with friends. (P.S., These are the OTHER people saying this about the restaurant.) Before Scramble: “I love Scramble! They have so many gluten-free options and their set-up is really cool. Everything they serve is local.” After Scramble: “Oh, I drive past that place. I don’t know if I should check it out.” So, I went to Scramble for Mother’s Day brunch for the first time, and the set-up was not what I expected. My friend said it had a “Saucey-type” vibe, where you walk in, hit a register, order what you need to, find a seat with a number, and then they serve you. I thought it was a restaurant where I was served non-stop, like Chompie’s or something. At any rate, what I liked about Scramble was not only the “vibe,” but just the amount of food that was offered. I typically love eggs, omelettes, frittatas type things, but was craving something cake-y. That french toast is making me salivate as I write this. Don’t just drive by the place, which is located on 7th Street and Mountain View Road. We lucked out on 70-something weather on Mother’s Day and sat outside to enjoy views of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. continued on page 19

A Tooth on the Playing Field BY DR. MELANIE HULL It’s July and before long parents will start preparing for back-to-school sports physicals. If a child participates in football or wrestling, wearing a mouth guard is a given. However, these are not the only sports that carry the risk of dental injuries. The American Dental Association recognizes that dental injuries are common in collision or contact sports and notes the following: While contact sports, such as boxing, have obvious injury risks, dental injuries are also occur in limited- and non-contact activities and exercises, such as gymnastics and skating. A 2018 analysis found that mouth guard users were 87.5% less likely to suffer dental injuries. An ideal mouth guard should: • be properly fitted to the wearer’s mouth and accurately adapted to his or her oral structures;
be made of resilient material that covers all teeth on one arch, customarily the upper teeth; •
•
stay in place comfortably and securely;
•
be physiologically compatible with the wearer;
•
be relatively easy to clean;
• have high-impact energy absorption and reduce transmitted forces upon impact.
There are a couple of different sports guard options available to student athletes: Stock (ready-made) This is the most commonly available and least expensive type of mouth guard, available at sporting goods stores. Because it is only available in a limited range of sizes, requires the mouth to be shut to keep it in place, and is not adapted to the user’s mouth, research suggest it is the least effective type of mouth guard. Custom-made Custom mouth guards are fabricated in a dental office or laboratory from individual patient impressions. They provide the best fit, adaptability and efficacy, but are the most expensive option and require a dental visit. If your child participates in collision or contact sports and activities, ask his/her dentist about a properly fitted, custom mouth guard. Teeth belong in the mouth, not on the field.

Spare Change for Change BY COUNCILWOMAN DEBRA STARK
“Giving Meter” Pilot Begins Downtown A couple years ago while visiting a southern California city, decorated parking meters caught my eye while walking around. I learned these meters weren’t for parking—but for collecting donations to help the homeless. These meters—bright, and covered with artwork—were placed in pedestrian areas, in such a way that would not be mistaken for parking purposes. Instead, a message on a sign offered people an alternative way to donate spare change to help the homeless population. I thought, why not give this a try this in Phoenix? Beginning this month, the City of Phoenix, along with Downtown Phoenix Partnership, will pilot the “Giving Meter” program in the Downtown Core. With support from Artlink Inc., they’ve invited artists to paint these meters that have been refitted to accept coin and card donations. Donations will fund PHX C.A.R.E.S. (Community Action Response Engagement Services), a City of Phoenix program that sends trained outreach teams to lead with services to help those experiencing homelessness find longterm solutions. The donations will be used to purchase essential supplies, such as hygiene products, eyeglasses, identification kits, sheets and towels, etc. During the pilot, the four Giving Meters will be in these high-pedestrian areas downtown: Northeast corner of 3rd Ave. & Washington St. Northwest corner of 1st Ave. & Jefferson St. Northwest corner of Central Ave. & Adams St. Northeast corner of 3rd St. & Van Buren St.
Rookie Mom ... continued from 16 Mom’s Pick: The French French* Toast (Yes, that’s a second French) Dad’s Pick: The Western Omelette Brynn’s Pick: The fresh-squeezed orange juice!!! Bottomline: I’m taking the in-law’s here for a weekend brunch when they next visit. Dairy, produce, and everything made local? So in. Yogurtini I’m just going to say it: This place is expensive. But now I’m going to say this: It’s the best yogurt in North Phoenix. It really is. When you have kids and you need something to offset your afternoon, this is the place to go. Typically, when I get a text that offers $5 whatever you can fill up your cup, I’ll take Brynn and she will get whatever yogurt I’m choosing, but loading it with the strangest and most random concoctions. Plus, I love the energy of this place. I’m a high school grad of 2003 (Go, McClintock Chargers!) and the music vibe is nostalgic along with a lovely gallery of oil-painted cacti. I dig it here with my daughter on a hot summer day. Stop by when it’s 110 degrees at Bell Towne Center off 7th Street and Bell Street. Dad’s Picks: Vanilla with fresh strawberries Mom’s Picks: Cookies and Cream with crushed Oreo toppings Brynn’s Picks: Whatever yogurt mom has with every single topping at the counter (ideally the “gummies”) Bottomline: Best yogurt in North Phoenix to take your littles and beat the heat.
The goal of PHX C.A.R.E.S. is to help people end their homelessness. (For more information, please visit phoenix.gov/phxcares.) Around Phoenix, and the Valley, many people and organizations are working toward this mission. The City of Phoenix is a partner of the Healthy Giving Council—a group of residents, non-profit organizations, social service providers, neighborhood groups, businesses and government agencies, and individuals who’ve experienced homelessness, who promote healthy and sustainable giving. (For more information, please visit givesmartaz.org.) Giving to those in need isn’t only a message for the holidays. Healthy and sustainable giving applies year-round. Consider giving to organizations that are working toward solutions to ending homelessness. Respectfully, Debra Stark Councilwoman City of Phoenix Council District 3

UMOM New Day Centers, Arizona’s innovative leader in shelter, services and housing for families, single women and youth experiencing homelessness, has partnered with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix to offer an on-campus summer program for kids living at the UMOM family shelter. The 8-week program runs from June 10th until August 2nd for kids 1018 years old. Approximately 30 kids attend every day. “The experience on the UMOM campus has been incredible so far,” says James Grubb, Boys and Girls Clubs teen specialist. “All of the kids are wonderful and eager to get involved, and the parents have been very supportive.” He adds, “It’s great watching the kids’ growth and how some step up as leaders and set an example for the other teens. Goes to show, you can never judge a book by its cover.” This program is fun with a purpose: a mix of structured activities and programs with some free time. Every day includes a group assembly in the morning and evening, and then the day is filled with activities and competitions combined with specific programming such as photography and dance clubs, an emotional/mental wellness group, a college and career readiness program, and even field trips. The older kids thrive in this environment because it provides freedom balanced with the right amount of structure. “We are grateful for this partnership, it provides our kids an opportunity to learn, grow and have fun during their summer break,” said Cassidy Penney, Marketing and Outreach Director at UMOM. “Another great thing about this partnership is that program participants also receive a free membership for one year to any of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix 13 locations, so they have continued support after they leave our shelter.”

Happy July 4th! Summer Has Arrived, Be Safe BY BRET ALDIERI, MVNA PRESIDENT Summer brings July fourth celebrations which are all about parades, family gatherings, barbeques, and fireworks. I find it a bit profound that our founders realized the historic moment they were creating in 1776 and called for an annual celebration of this momentous event. In fact, it was John Adams who wrote to his wife Abigail in July 1776 the following:
“…I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.“
Our country provides personal freedom and liberty, and allows each of us to pursue our dreams and ambitions. While our country is far from perfect, I challenge you to find a better one in the world. However, it seems these days that our television and radio coverage only focus on our issues and the divide between our political parties. Our freedom allows free speech to share our views on a wide range of topics. My hope is that we find a way to also listen - listen to our neighbors, fellow countrymen, and especially to those with differing views. If we listen to each other, we may find areas of common interest and develop compromised solutions to solve real problems. Safety - Summer also brings our kids out of school and family vacations. Kids love water which requires constant supervision around a pool. It’s a great idea to get your kids swimming lessons – even better to organize a group of neighbors for classes. Kids are also out on bikes or playing in the front yards, so please abide by speed restrictions and be ready to stop suddenly. Please be extra diligent.
Security – if you haven’t signed up for the cooperative Security Services for those in Moon Valley, please do so. In addition to neighborhood patrols and rapid response to reports of suspicious activity; they provide an excellent vacation home check service. If you are a security member, you can call them to advise of your vacation plans and they will perform a daily home check. Visit our website at www.moonvalleyna.org to pay your 2019 dues and security service fee; a total of only $120 for the year. What makes Moon Valley great is the people who live here and their willingness to help make it an even better place to live. This Fourth of July, please take a moment to thank the men and women who serve in our military, police, and fire services. It’s also a good time to reflect on how you can help make our great neighborhood an even better place to live. You can make a difference. Moon Valley – Neighbors helping Neighbors

THe Weak Link BY LEON, TRY ME BICYCLE SHOP Bicycle chains have a splice where they are held together. Sometimes nuts an bolts,snap links and spring clips. Chain can also be put together by forcing a pin out then back together. This is weak because it removes some metal. KMC makes the missing link this works with oval holes that snap in place when peddling forward and detached with a special pliers. A broken chain is a real let down when peddling of the seat. Then its time to walk. Unless you have a chain tool. Question for next month: Do two rights make a left?
New Business Spotlight - Of the Artsy Variety Jennfier Golubiewski - Artist A self –taught artist Jennifer Golubiewski brings her visual experiences to the canvas using big color and bold strokes. She moved to Moon Valley 6 years ago from Wisconsin to work a corporate job in Scottsdale. When her position moved to the new headquarters in Hollywood, CA she decided to stay and focus on her painting and fiber art aspirations. The concept at Sunny Slope Design Studio is create large scale paintings paired with custom dyed coordinating cushions to create a tonal focal point in a room. A ‘one stop shop’ for homeowners, interior decorators and stagers to find original pieces to finish a room. Life has taken her many places around the world personally and professionally, photographing everything from sunsets to skylines to street markets all filed away in categories ‘to paint later’. Her current work ranges from abstract florals to Phoenix skylines. What’s next at SSDS? Jennifer says she has big plans for a series of Southwest landscapes- her way. Additionally, she has a high- end hand dyed pillow collection in the works made from Arizona wool. “I am a passionate fiber enthusiast as well as painter. Sourcing wool from a local eco-friendly source is very important to me. I want to know my farmer and support them whenever possible. We have wonderful resources in Arizona, we need to support one another”. The wool is processed without acids and harsh chemicals commonly found in industrial processing. To further keep the manufacturing footprint light Jennifer has honed he skills to dye the yarn in the sun. “The summer sun is so intense here my dyes exhaust (fully take to the fiber) in as little as an hour. I’m really excited about this project, I want to be a resource for people looking for original art both on canvas and textiles to elevate their living spaces.” What’s unique about SSDS? Don’t let the words ‘custom art’ put $$$ in your eyes, this art is priced to sell. Stagers and real estate agents take note: this art is for rent by the day, week or month! Take your Open House to the next level with SSDS.

Do Design Trends reflect Y-O-U? B Y K AT H L E E N V I C K Greetings, Readers! You are a unique individual and your personal space should reflect YOU! Your environment should look completely different if you’re a “wild and crazy guy (or gal)” or a prudent and measured individual. In addition to visually reflecting your personality, your space should enhance the quality of your life: both in terms of your physical needs and your emotional health. And that’s what we will explore in these columns. Let’s first begin with an examination of “trends” and how they impact the quality of your life. If you came across old friends at a school reunion would they still recognize your personality? How much has the “inner you” changed in the last, say, 10, 20 or 30 years? Yes, you have aged; you’ve acquired knowledge & wisdom and perhaps tempered some of those bad habits you had back then but you are essentially the same person. Let’s contrast that with how many fads and trends have passed by in those years—how DID you look in that micro-mini skirt—or that mullet? ? And more importantly, how would you look in them TODAY? And so it is with trends. They may be nice at the time but they just don’t last. And sometimes they look ridiculous as time moves on. But you, and design that reflects you, lasts forever--just like the classic “little black dress”.
Trends are fleeting, costly, can have negative environmental impacts, do not necessarily enhance the quality of your life and do not necessarily reflect who YOU are. Food for thought..... Future pieces will examine how your space can enhance the quality of your life in very specific terms: color, lighting, furnishings, views, flooring, etc. If you have questions or ideas for topics you’d like to have addressed, please contact the TATTLER and I will take your suggestions seriously.
