Painting seems like such an easy DIY project to give your home a fresh look, and it can be. It can also scare off potential buyers. There are a few things to keep in mind before you begin your next painting endeavor.

Color is key! It’s very tempting to try and set the mood of a room with paint color. There are so many colors that give off a sense of elegance, whimsy, or fun. Use caution when selecting these types of colors for walls or cabinets. The deep burgundy paint that perfectly matches your bedroom linens, may remind someone of their middle school colors and totally turn them off to your home. Yes, it’s true, it’s just paint, but not all buyers can see past that or want to have to repaint a home after they purchase it. If you are thinking of listing your home within the next five years or so, select a paint color that is neutral.

Off whites, light beiges, or light grays are always a good option. Give your room a splash of color with throw pillows and artwork instead.

The paint you buy matters a whole lot! Don’t go for cheap paint, you will be disappointed. There is a reason that professional painters don’t buy the cheapest paint you can find. Quality paint goes on more smoothly, covers up old paint

better, and lasts longer. Check with the professionals at your local paint store to find out which paint is the best product for your application. They will also be able to help you with the correct sheen. Painting a high traffic area like a kitchen or bathroom with the wrong paint sheen can leave you feeling frustrated in no time. Tell the paint store clerk exactly which room it’s going in and the look you are trying to achieve and he or she can point you in the right direction.

Lastly, if you can’t paint like a pro, leave it to the pros.

Professional painters know all of the tricks to making a paint job look its best. They know the proper way to mask to create sharp, clean lines. It’s a big turn off to a potential buyer when paint is sloppy and the paint color from one wall is bleeding over to another wall. They also will notice things like paint drips or uneven coverage. A minor thing like sloppy paint can give them an impression that your home it is not well maintained.

It’s always a good idea to present your home the best that you can when planning to sell. A fresh coat of paint on walls and baseboards certainly helps. Just make sure if you are going to spend the money repainting either the interior or the exterior of your house it looks professional and attracts, instead of deters, any potential buyers.

By now, you would have received your January issue in your mailbox, safe and free of the elements of wind, rain, snow (not usually) and the hot sun, crisp clean and in perfect shape! We were very excited and happy to start this new delivery system to be able to have a much more consistent product, timely and again free from the harsh elements.

Since 1980, The Moon Valley Tattler has been a very important part of the little community, reporting on all the great things happening in and around our homes. There have been births, graduations, scholastic milestones, military honors, fund raisers, groups and clubs volunteering, death, but more importantly the growth of true and life long memories and friendships have bloomed and blossomed thru the many generations that have come to call Moon Valley home.

And now 2019, is bringing another upgrade and change to the Moon Valley Tattler, it will not only be delivered to your home via US mail, it is changing sizes and the paper quality will also be upgraded. We will continue to highlight the most important assets of our community, YOU the valuable leaders, mothers, fathers, school teachers, mentors, business owners.

Our collective team’s brains are spinning with new ideas for the new year and we are dedicated to finding and delivering very thoughtful, appropriate, entertaining stories for and from you, your neighbors and hardworking community leaders. Social media will also be increased, and we look forward to your participation, with great finds, little hidden gems, and shout outs to good deeds.

It is hard to believe this publication started in 1980, 39 years ago…. Many of you have been here in Moon Valley for all that time! In the past few years, we’ve seen the North Central Phoenix corridor become popular with a rise in trendy restaurants and modernized mid-century homes. We’ve also seen a higher demand for housing resulting in higher costs and a very low inventory.

Moving to Moon Valley, just a short hop north on 7th Street, is the answer for many. Affordable housing, a welcoming neighborhood feel, the Phoenix Mountain Preserve, excellent schools, are all features that are drawing buyers to the area. It’s very common to hear that kids who grew up here, are now moving back with their own young families. As one new neighbor told me, “Everything I need is right here, and I want my children to experience that same neighborhood feel that I did. Moon Valley is changing, and so are we

BY H A N A R UZ SA Julie Pek hit the nail on the head – Moon Valley is no longer a secret! We’re sure you’ve noticed the developments all along Bell Rd, and the improvements to some of our best shopping centers along Thunderbird. Neighborhood favorites like Aiello’s and Charr have even expanded to meet the new demands that Moon Valley brings (I mean have you seen how cool Charrcade is?!)

Moon Valley has seen steady growth each year since 2000, with families from around the Valley recognizing our top notch schools (here’s looking at you Lookout Mountain, Mountain Sky, and Thunderbird) and taking advantage of our unique floorplans and great property values.

In hopes of meeting demand, Dawn wrote in her “Letter from the Editor” our transition to mailing the Moon Valley Tattler. In doing so, we’re planning to reach more and more qualified readers, and prevent your papers from getting lost or damaged due to traditional delivery methods. But how are we evolving to offer better opportunities for all of our local businesses? Great question!

We’re classy-ing up the paper! It’s been years since we’ve initiated a layout change, and

we think it’s about time. We’re now able to offer more ad size options to meet your needs, and have expanded to digital. Plus, isn’t it great knowing your ads, articles and photos will POP on our new upgraded paper? The new magazine style will certainly feel more luxurious – after all, what a luxury it is to live in Moon Valley! – and you don’t need to worry about pages going missing because they will be secured together. The benefit of mailing our paper too ensures that if you’re running inserts (and they are an amazing value) you can target the zip codes that matter most to you. Previously, this was a bit more difficult for our advertisers submitting inserts to request.

Finally, Hana Ruzsa is working hard for you. Since 2014, she’s been the designer of our paper and has taken on the extensive role of restructuring ads for the new layout, researching trends for our new design, and has wanted to be more active with our contributors that you’ve probably noticed her responding to your emails and conducting outreach.

Letter from a reader - Helicopters My name is John M. and we moved to Moon Valley about 2 years ago. We really love the area and we love our neighbors... what we cannot stand is the helicopter noise.

I have done a lot of research on this issue and cannot find any authority that has control over these cowboy "operators" as they are called. Apparently they come from Sky Harbor out to Deer Valley airport for fuel, and they fly in a straight line, which brings them directly over Moon Valley. If you live in Moon Valley you most likely have heard these guys. Yesterday it was 3:00 a.m. in the morning, today it was 3:40. They come low and loud. These are not police helicopters, which we have no problem with.

These are private helicopters.

My opinion is that someone needs to make these guys follow major arteries or freeways. There is just no good reason why they couldn't follow the I17 out to Deer

Valley, but they don't.

I found an app called flightradar24 where you can actually watch them on a map type of deal. Its pretty interesting, gives you there altitude, flight speed and a picture of the helicopter or airplane. The one thing missing is who owns it and who is flying it.

If I had that information I would contact them directly but I do not and the FAA will not give it out.

When we first moved to Moon Valley people were constantly making comments about how quiet it was. Maybe I didn't notice the racket from these choppers but now that we hear them it is even worse. We are already looking to move and that is a major bummer at our tender age.

the Best way to say, “I love you!”

B Y L I B B Y B A N K S , T H E L AW O F F I C E O F L I B B Y B A N K S , P L L C , E S TAT E P L A N N I N G With Valentine’s Day here, I’ve been wondering how to show my family I love them. And, of course, estate planning was one of my first thoughts!

A proper estate plan makes it so much easier on those you love both if you become incapacitated and when you are no longer here. Without a cohesive, thoughtful estate plan, you may leave a gigantic mess. Your family may have to expend a large sum of money and lots of time and effort to clean it up. Worse, your family may end up fighting.

Time after time when I handled family estate fights, clients said they would never speak to their siblings or stepchildren or stepparent again, or lamented that the messy estate issues were breaking the family apart. I value family highly, and these cases broke my heart. I went into estate planning to help clients avoid these messy fights.

A proper estate plan shows your love by easing the burden of administering your estate and eliminating or minimizing potential fights. When there’s no fight, it’s much easier for your loved ones to love and support each other during the difficult time of your incapacity or death. Here are some big mistakes that you should avoid: Not having a plan: This seems obvious, but it is the number one mistake made by hundreds of thousands of people in Arizona. If you don’t have a plan, don’t worry. The State of Arizona has one for you. The legislature put it together for us to follow, but it may not be what you want. My best advice is to put your own plan in place instead.

Now, who exactly needs an estate plan? Well, if you have children (minors or adults), you need a plan. If you own a home, you need a plan. Whether your situation is simple or complicated, you need a plan tailored to you that will save your family heartache and money when you’re gone.

Not having a plan leaves your heirs to fight about who’s in charge, who’s going to front attorney’s fees and funeral expenses and who’s going to do the work of wrapping up your estate. A simple plan may be all. Having a plan helps ensure make sure your children will still be speaking to each other when the work on your estate is complete.

Putting a do-it-yourself plan in place or using a non-expert for your plan: Sometimes we need to call in the experts. We simply don’t know what we don’t know.

Would you do your own major surgery? No! Clearly, you would go to a reputable

surgeon who specializes in the area. An attorney who focuses on estate planning knows the ins and outs of the law, the language you need to use, and things you may want to put in your estate plan that you don’t even know about. If you do a plan yourself, you may make a serious mistake, and when your family finds out, it will be too late to fix it.

Using a nonexpert can cause problems as well. Nonexperts are often really smart people, but they aren’t estate planning attorneys. They don’t have the education and the attention to detail and language that estate planners have. I have sorted out many a mess caused by a non-expert’s plan, or a non-expert’s amendment to a good attorney’s plan.

Keeping your “older-than-the-hills” estate plan: Did you put a Will together when your children were born? Good for you! But if it’s been a few years, it may be time to revisit your plan. If your children are still minors, but your assets have grown substantially, you may want to rethink how you are leaving your assets to them. If your children now have their own children, you need an update desperately. If you don’t know whether there are changes in the laws governing your estate, you need a legal review of the plan to be sure.

An older estate plan can cause the same kinds of problems as no plan. If your plan doesn’t address your current circumstances – both your family situation and your asset situation – a fight over what should be done may well be on the horizon.

I recommend to my clients that they review their plan with me every three years.

That way, if the laws have changed, I can let them know how it affects them. If their situation has changed, I can advise whether their plan needs an update because of the new circumstances.

Giving Group Provides cheer for Non-profits and Donors Alike

BY MARK BLUM It is human nature to give. We all do it in one way or another. Some of us give time while others give money. Some of us listen to the people we love and support them when they are conflicted. We try to make a positive impact any way we can for the people we care about. That’s how human nature works.

Why do you think we buy Girl Scout cookies? Sure, the cookies are delicious, but so are a lot of other cookies. There is something about that young girl in her uniform working hard for something she cares about. There is something about that mother who makes the time to watch over the child in front of the grocery store. Have you ever purchased cookies even when you’re on a diet?

Everyone has. It’s because we like to give and help others succeed.

This year, my wife and I purchased a Coffee News franchise and our first advertiser was Brian from Orion Mortgage. Brian is one of those over-achiever types and started a non-profit organization called The Giving Group. My wife and I were fascinated by the concept, so we joined immediately.

Here’s how it works…

There are 100 members who meet four times a year. At each meeting everyone pays $100 so we have $10,000.

Then the magic happens! Brian randomly picks four members names out of a hat and they go in front of the group. They each talk for 5 minutes about a local non-profit they care about. After the presentations, the rest of the group votes on their favorite of the four. The organization with the most votes will then receive a check for $10,000!

Our last meeting was on November 29th and my wife and I had our name randomly selected. We weren’t prepared, but we got up and talked about the Civitan Foundation. The Civitan Foundation is a local non-profit that helps adults with disabilities. They have a program to give their members real world and work experiences to get them involved in the community. I hired the Civitan Foundation to deliver my newspapers every week. My team is near and dear to my heart and I stood and shared my heartfelt experience with them.

In the end, we got the most votes by 1, and The Civitan Foundation received a check for $10,000! We were up against three other incredible and well deserving organizations in La Mesa Ministries, Vista Del Camino and Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS).

It’s one thing to donate a few bucks or a few hours to a local charity, and it’s another to tell them they will be getting a check for $10,000. When my wife and I shared the news with Civitan, there were tears and hugs and a sense of disbelief. On a selfish note, we could honestly say it was one of the happiest moments in our lives. It was so surreal to be part of something so impactful.

The Civitan Foundation will be using the money to refurbish their recreation patio. Throughout the year the members, children and adults with developmental disabilities, use the area for sport activities, meals, games, special events and socialization. The area includes box gardens, courts, a shaded structure and a patio. When the weather is nice, the recreation area is used by nearly everyone.

To date, the Giving Group has now had an impact of over $44,000 to local non-profits in our community. Past recipients include the Human Services Campus, The Joy Bus, Families Raising Hope and Boys Hope Girls Hope.

Activity as good as meds for high bp WELLNESS IN MOTION BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER, CMT DC High blood pressure can go unrecognized for years, with few or no symptoms until the ultimate consequence – a heart attack or stroke – strikes.

As you might imagine, that’s generally far too late in the game. Even people who are diagnosed with high BP often receive a prescription for blood pressure medication, which can help, but also elevates the risk of health problems attributable to the medication itself.

What if there were a safer, equally effective option for reducing high blood pressure? Actually, there is –

exercise. A massive review study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine determined, after evaluating findings from almost 400 research trials on how blood pressure drugs or exercise affected blood pressure, that each lowered blood pressure in hypertensive patients by nearly 9 mmHg. (Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury, with 120/80 mmHg considered normal.)

about high blood pressure and suggest simple exercises that can keep your BP in the safe range (and improve your overall health in a variety of other ways). If you still think medication is the only option, consider the risks. In fact, just recently, the Food and Drug Administration recalled multiple BP medications which were contaminated with a potential cancer-causing agent during the manufacturing process.

Rookie Mom: Motivation is the key to beauty and Self-Love B Y B R I G H I D C O N S TA B L E I am not going to lie... These last few weeks have been pretty rough in keeping up my New Year’s resolution. I went the cliched-but-dependable route: to lose weight. And not just a small amount, but a good chunk of 35 pounds from my postpartum baby weight.

I went all out, buying Autumn Calabrese’s 80 Day Obsession for Beachbody and promised myself to not drink soda anymore. Yet here I am, a Coke Zero on my desk waiting for me with my last workout completed 5 days ago, not less than a pound thinner.

The new year brought on something else, too. In January, I turned 34.

But here’s where I think I’ve gone wrong in my resolution: No, it’s not too much weight too soon. Once upon a time, I used to be fit. At 22, I would wake at 6 a.m. and run 8 miles and was also crazy-obsessed with my body, the scale, calorie intake, and what I looked like compared to other women. It was sincerely a mental prison. If I said I looked “fat,” other people felt like it was judgment not only on me, but themselves.

Obviously, I had an eating disorder. I wanted out and did eventually leave that unhealthy mental zone, but now I don’t know how to positively transform that into a healthy balance.

You see, I am definitely at the age where I do not want to be obsessed about my calorie intake or weight. I sincerely want to model healthy beauty for my

daughter Brynn. Healthy beauty is not about skipping meals, or choosing Coke Zero over water, or basing my health by the number on the scale. It’s also not about feeling uncomfortable in your body and eating whatever you want at whatever portion.

So, how do I get more mentally and physically fit? I am still in my postpartum body and am stuck in fear of wanting to lose that great amount of weight because I want my daughter be a strong independent woman and accept who she is. *Snap, snap!* But, I also want to lose that baby weight and get over this fear.

I think that it’s okay to rewrite my resolution into something that will be more tangible. Because as you read this, I am most definitely in the “actions speak louder than words” zone.

Motivation. I need to motivation to keep the consistency of a health routine that’s going to set a positive influence for my family.

Although I might not be losing physical weight, it does feel marvelous to shed any mental weight as I embrace my lifestyle as a working mom. It’s hard to find time to want to do the workouts or meal plan or whatever. I need to give myself a pat on the back for choosing a turkey sandwich instead of just eating turkey, no bread. Because she is the going to be the model for my daughter.

With that, my wish for my daughter, as she turns 2 on February 26, is for her to embrace the wild personality that she has and accept all of her journeys yet to come with gratitude knowing there’s something more behind it to help her grow.

Or maybe that’s just something I need to continue reminding myself.

MVNA Progress & March Garage Sale (2nd & 3rd)

It’s sad to see the Christmas decorations coming down – but there are a few holdouts keeping the night bright. Moon Valley had a great Christmas season with lots of block parties and frequent touring of decorated homes. In addition, we collected nearly 2,000 pounds of food for the Desert Mission Food bank; thanks to Ron Wyckmans for leading this effort.

Hats off to Dr. Aaron Verbarg’s dental office who once again led all commercial partners in collecting the most food donations.

2019 MVNA annual meeting held January 9th with about 150 neighbors gathering to hear updates on our community. Black Mountain police prescient commander, Tom Van Dorn and Assistant Chief of Phoenix Police Mary Roberts told us of the positive trends for crime reduction in our community, though hot spots remain. They expressed the need for strong neighborhood partnerships, (like our own), and to call police when anything looks suspicious. State representative Anthony Kern introduced himself to our community. Phoenix City Councilwoman Deb Stark

highlighted that the multiple golf course water pipe is nearly complete and more funding is coming to improve the quality of street surfaces. Both Thunderbird and Coral Gables are slated for new pavement in the spring, and we hope 7th street gets added to the project list soon. Brett Evans, MVCC GM told us about positive changes in the club experience and invited the community to try an affordable social membership to use the restaurant and bar facilities (602) 942-0000. I capped the evening with a review of MVNA 2018 activities and some of the key goals for 2019; our top is increased dues payers with the security option.

I’ve wondered for years why insurance companies were reluctant to approve and pay for chiropractic services. My amazement stems from first hand experience relieving patients’ symptoms while also preventing more expensive testing and treatment by the traditional medical (or allopathic) methods of care. Expensive diagnostic imaging, prescriptions, and surgery have become less attractive to both patients and their insurers. An article in the December 2010 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) titled, “Cost of Care for Common Back Pain Condition Initiated with Chiropractic Doctor vs. Medical Doctor/ Doctor of Osteopathy as First Physician” studied this issue.

The article is a retrospective claims analysis of Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of Tennessee’s intermediate and large group fully-insured population. The researchers identified BCBS members with Low Back Pain claims based upon the diagnosis codes used by MDs and DCs alike. During a two year period, 85,402 members met these criteria. The total cost for each episode of low back

pain was determined by calculating the cost paid by the insurer for all services provided during the episode by the same and other providers. The study found that those patients that initiated care with a DC (doctor of chiropractic) cost the insurance company $452.33. Patients that saw their medical doctor first averaged $1037.04 . This represents an approximate 40% savings when patients sought care for low back pain from a chiropractic physician as compared to an allopathic provider. These results suggest that insurance companies that restrict access to chiropractic care for low back pain, inadvertently, pay more. Mind boggling.

The study reinforces what chiropractors see on a daily basis. Conservative chiropractic care often helps patients avoid or reduce more costly and invasive treatment methods such as prescription drugs and surgery. The American Chiropractic Association President, Rick McMichaels, DC, made the following statement, “The study…… demonstrates the value of chiropractic care at a critical time, when our nation is attempting to reform its health care system and contain runaway costs.” So we’ll continue to do our part by providing an effective, but less costly and more conservative approach to low back pain!

Growing a Love for Community Involvement B Y E M I LY T H AY E R , C L A S S O F 2 02 3 For several years now, the Moon Valley Chapter of National Charity League, Inc. (NCL, Inc.) has been a philanthropic partner with Growing Together… a Giving Garden. Situated on the west lot of Living Streams Church on the corner of Glendale and Central Avenues, The Growing Garden strives to build a community, teach the love of gardening, feed those in need, beautify the neighborhood, and encourage more gardens like this one. For NCL, Inc., the Growing Together Garden serves as a place to learn about gardening, healthy food, and giving back to others.

NCL, Inc. has supported the Growing Together Garden by donating money for new tools and upgrading the shelving in their storage sheds, as well as volunteering time to assist with the garden. “NCL Mothers and Daughters are one of the hardest working volunteers we’ve seen as they are always on time, with a smile at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning (yes, teenage girls!), and with open hearts and giving hands, ready to serve,” says Judy Walden, garden volunteer.

When my mom and I volunteer at the Growing Together Garden, there is never a dull moment and our time there goes by quickly. My responsibilities at the garden have included stirring compost, pulling weeds, adding topsoil to the flower beds, and watering the plants. The garden provides a unique experience every time you visit; there is always something different to see and do since gardening is seasonal. It feels good to unplug from technology, get a breath of fresh air, and get involved in my community.

Growing Together Garden’s mission is to provide healthy food to local charities while sharing their time, talent and treasures to help others. The food produced is given to Joy Bus Diner, Living Streams Church food bank and the Phoenix Dream Center. Garden worker, Annie Mittelstaedt, said, “That’s one of the things we love

about the garden. It’s a space where everybody is equal, and we are all out do the same thing.

It makes the experience fun because you see so many different people from different walks of life working together to do something cool.”

Think outside the box and pretend some one grabbed your purse or briefcase. So, what is in there that you could perhaps put in a moneybelt? Hum novel idea. The thieves are getting more aggressive, creative and in some cases desperate, particularly if they are into to drugs. So, I would like you to consider reorganizing what it is that you are carrying to and fro. Dump everything out of the purse/briefcase on to a large surface, now evaluate. Get a money belt and put the credit card(s), drivers license and emergency card in the money belt.

Now the purse /briefcase has the other stuff. Mine has my cell phone, however even a cell phone could go on one of those waist clips or holsters.

Years back we had a thing called a Fanny Pack. It usually had two or three zippered pockets It was bulky but sure served the purpose. The old fanny packs are great for casual used i.e. walk the dog, yard work, or even around the house so you don’t miss that important phone call. The Money belts are much more streamed lined and one may not even know you have it on. They are very flat, and secure around the waist with an easy release clasp. Getting used to it is the hardest part. Worth the effort. Try it, you may like it.

At a recent Black Mountain event, Officer B. Kornegay gave an excellent presentation on this very subject. One of the big takeaways I got was not to fight to keep the purse. Those bad guys don’t give a darn about you, they want the purse. They will hit, knife, and or punch, they want what they think is in that purse. He spoke from experience after many encounters dealing with victims of purse snatching. Speaking of our officer this presentation was given at the Black Mountain monthly meeting. 6:30 pm and out by 8:30 pm. News from Phoenix District 3 Councilwoman Stark - February 2019 I am proud to currently serve as chairwoman of the city of Phoenix Aviation and Transportation Subcommittee. The condition of our city streets is one of the top issues that I hear from residents and business owners in District 3 about on a daily basis – and is one of my top priorities as your District 3 Councilwoman.

At the Phoenix City Council Formal meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018, we voted to accelerate the city’s pavement maintenance program, unanimously approving the first steps to implement a plan that advances $200 million in pavement maintenance projects on arterial and major streets. This Council approval follows action taken in October to advance pavement maintenance efforts through the financing of Transportation 2050 (T2050) street program revenues.

Thanks to the voter-approved T2050 plan we are making a critical and long overdue investment to improve our city’s aging street infrastructure. This investment creates a positive impact across the city and greatly enhances the integrity of the streets that our residents and visitors depend on.

The budget boost will significantly improve both the condition of the city’s arterial and major collector streets, and the city’s local and minor collector streets beginning this fiscal year. The Street Transportation Department has already begun the preparation work necessary for expediting pavement overlay work and it is scheduled to begin Spring 2019.

Due to these Council actions – now, over a five-year period, more than 600 street miles are programmed to be repaved. Residents will see nearly a 300 percent increase in the number of major-street miles that are currently paved per year.

Next steps for this program include identifying the highest priority streets to receive mill and overlay treatments for fiscal years 2021 through 2023. As part of the plan, in February/March 2019 presentations will be made at community meetings, and in Spring 2019 an online tool will launch to allow community members to share their feedback on the proposed street repairs.

A daughter of immigrants from Italy (Angelo Giangreco and Constance Pace) – neither of whom graduated from grammar school, Paula was taught that education and hard work are the keys to success…. AND that … in America anything is possible. Her father, Angelo Giangreco, worked as a pressman at the NYTimes for 42 years; her mother, Constance Pace, was a seamstress for top fashion designers in NYC. Paula and her siblings (Vincent and Nancy) all graduated from college.

As President of Women in Management for a Fortune 500 company in Phoenix, she created and facilitated the 1985 Year for All Arizona Women project with support from Gov Bruce Babbitt, 65 Mayors, 6 tribal leaders, county officials, numerous businesses and individuals. The year-long celebration consisted or over 100 events, which involved over 300 volunteers statewide and attracted over 10,000 attendees. It was a multi-racial and ethnic effort.

In 1989, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Paula turned her misfortune into advocacy for national funding for breast cancer as well as taking the lead role in AZ by being part of the national grass-roots movement which resulted in the National Breast Cancer Coalition.

In 1991, in preparation for the UN Conference on the Environment, Paula (as President of the United Nations Association - Phoenix Chapter and member of the Phoenix City Club) created an event on Eco-Feminism and invited Bella Abzug the late Congresswoman from NY, to speak.

In 2002 with husband Tim, Paula created the Arizona Women›s Partnership, an all-volunteer philanthropic non-profit, which awards grants to small charities in AZ that assist underserved women and children, domestic violence, child abuse, ESL, youth leadership, ESL. adult literacy, homelessness, hunger, girls who have been sex trafficked, refugee women and families. To date, over $400,000 has been awarded to over 55 charities in AZ, thus impacting the lives of over 100,000.

In 2015 when she learned that no organization was planning an event, she took the initiative and created the 95th anniversary celebration of the 19th amendment - giving women the right to vote and invited Justice Mary Schroeder of the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, the highest-ranking female judge, to key-note: The event was a huge success.

Now Paula is working on 2020 - In Celebration of Women, a juried art exhibit of female artists with women and girls as the theme to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. The exhibit opens at the Herberger Theater Gallery on Friday March 6, 2020 with a reception at 6pm-9pm. A similar exhibit is being planned for ASU downtown Phoenix campus. Paula selected March because of International Women’s Day and since March is also Women’s History Month.

Advice to Young women: You can realize your dreams and goals through hard work and determination. Always be willing to help others in their journey. Believe in yourself and surround yourself with positive thinking people who will support you.

We currently serve 15 different philanthropies in the Phoenix area. Over the past six months btc North Valley League has contributed over 2700 volunteer hours helping pack food boxes, assisting children with homework, serving meals to hundreds of families, collecting diapers for local children’s organizations, and working at various animal rescues to just name a few of our activities.

Cupid’s Arrow Finds It’s Mark

By Martha Santos The chime of the doorbell thew me into a state of panic.

“Mom, that’s him!” I said, fidgeting like a five year old. “Do I look alright?”

“You look beautiful, honey,” she said, patting my shoulder, “Try and relax. I’ll get the door.”

Relax! I was doing some last minute primping in the hall mirror when it occurred to me that I was about to live out my dream. What if it turned into a nightmare? I took a deep breath, crossed my fingers and went to greet my date.

When I saw him standing there; white shirt and red tie, holding a bouquet of red roses, my fingers uncrossed and my shoulders dropped down from my ears. “Wow!” You look fantastic,” he said, handing me the flowers. “These are for you.”

I was speechless.

Fortunately, Mom came to my rescue. “I’ll find a vase,” she said, taking them from my hands. “So, where are you young people headed tonight?”

“Haven’t decided,” Mrs. Jones. How about a movie, Martha. ‘That Darn Cat’ is playing. You mentioned you liked Disney.”

That would be great,” I said, “I’ll get my sweater.” I passed Mom on the return trip from my room, gave her a quick kiss and promised to be home by ten.

His car, though not new, was in pristine condition. He politely opened the door for me and before I knew it we had secured a spot at the drive-in and were walking back from the concession stand; popcorn with extra butter for me and hotdog, with the works, for him. When the movie started his arm floated around my shoulders. The rapid pace of my sixteen year old heart made it difficult to pay attention. The show ended all too soon. Since it was still early, we stopped for ice-cream sodas. I don’t ever remember chocolate tasting that good.

“We should do this again,” he’s said, walking me to my door.

“That would be great,” I answered.

He glanced at his watch just as we reached the stoop. “It’s not quite ten yet,” he said. “Do we have time for a kiss? I smiled and nodded my head yes. My first Valentine kiss turned out to be all I had imagined and more.

That was fifty-eight years ago. Last year we celebrated our Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary and he still says I’ll always be his Sweet Sixteen.

Chance Encounter “I must be crazy!” Suzy voiced to herself, narrowly escaping loss of life and auto while navigating her way out of See’s parking lot.

One glance at the box of dark chocolate truffles, sitting on the passenger seat, made it all worth while. Divorce had enough drawbacks; not enjoying holidays did not have to be one of them.

Avenues slid by at a steady pace until she spotted CHRISTIE”S in the distance and slowed. She had passed that restaurant every work day for the last six years. The fact that the outside was so nondescript and no one she knew had dined there, created an air of intrigue.

A sudden thought surfaced. Why not! When did having a man become a prerequisite to experiencing the way beautiful people dine?

Seeing a car pull out, leaving an open space in front of the entrance, she slid into the spot, grabbed her candy and jumped out without a pause, since hesitation would cause her to think twice and come to her senses.

Inside, waiting to be seated, she questioned why, in the name of St. Valentine, she brought the heart shaped box in with her? Candlelight floated from each table and she breathed in the scent of fresh flowers while following the waiter to a cozy corner table for two. When the waiter spouted the evening’s specials, she stopped him at the mention of lobster. “Is there something I can get for you, Sir, while you wait?”she absently heard a waiter ask a gentleman seated at the next table. Suzy decided Champagne would compliment her meal nicely. “You can bring me a dry martini, Jonathan, but I’m dining alone.”

Suzy perked up on hearing the man’s response; comforted by the thought she wasn’t the only one.

“Very good, Sir,” Jonathan bowed slightly before leaving the table.”

Interesting, he knew the waiter by name, must come here often. Not bad looking, probably has money. Should she? Why not?

After all, a woman sitting in a fancy restaurant, by herself, who plans to order a whole lobster and champagne on a teacher’s salary, has already ascended to the carte blanche level.

When the lone diner spotted her looking at him she lowered her eyes and grabbed a warm piece of bread.

“Would you like to have dinner with me? she asked. He smiled his answer; his eyes beautifully brown. “My name is Doug McCullough,” he said approaching her table.”

She loved the name Doug. “I’m Suzanne

“It’s a pleasure meeting you Suzanne Coleman.” He pulled out a chair.

“Wait!” She warned, pulling the chocolates out from under him.”

“Were you expecting someone?”

“Only you,” she answered coyly.

He grinned, “Wishful thinking?”

“It worked,” She winked up at him.

“Excuse me,” a voice broke into her reverie.

Suzy ignored it and moved ahead with her daydream. She kept her eyes down, picked up her knife and dipped into a pat of butter. What would her Doug McCullough say next? Where he worked, where he lived, how beautiful she was, how he had been searching for someone like her his whole life… She lifted her eyes to get another look at the object of her fantasy but saw an empty table.

“Excuse me.” A tap on her shoulder accompanied the phrase this time. She looked up to see her table neighbor standing beside her. “I didn’t mean to startle you. I’ve been trying to get your attention for the last few minutes…but, you seemed preoccupied with your bread.”

“Doug?”

“No, Bob, Bob Fuller,” She loved the name Bob. “And you are…?”

“Suzanne Coleman.” His eyes were blue.

“We both appear to be dining alone. What do you say we pool our resources and create a new scenario?”

“Sure.”

“I’ll get my things from the other table.”

Perfect! That gave her just enough time to move the candy off the chair before he sat on it. When he returned carrying his own box of candy, she held up her truffles.

“Aren’t we a pair?” she said.

“Indeed.” Bob held up his glass. Suzy picked up her’s. “To celebrating,” he offered.

Their glasses chimed before he sat down.

“To celebrators,” she countered, creating a second chime after he settled in.

Suzy noticed the waiter’s grin as he set down the salads, caught his eye and shared his smile.

What might come of this chance encounter, mattered not. What did matter? This was happening now, and she planed to immerse herself completely into each and every moment. She sipped her champagne before saying “Tell me, Bob, what’s a gentleman as handsome as yourself doing dining alone on Valentine’s Day? “I’m not dining alone,” he said.

And neither was she.
