Tattler Goes to Southeast Asia! A TRAVELING TATTLER STORY BY DON AND BRENDA SMITH Don and Brenda Smith who have been residents of Moon Valley since 1983, recently travelled to Southeast Asia to visit Angkor Wat near Siem Reap, Cambodia and the magnificent islands of Thailand in the Andaman Sea near Krabi, Thailand. Angkor was a mega city and the capital of the Khmer Empire which flourished from the 9th to 12th centuries. It is the largest religious complex in the world with many temples strategically placed around Angkor Wat. In addition to the Angkor Wat Temple shown in our sunrise photo, we also visited Ta Prohm where the original “Tomb Raider” movies were filmed. Another amazing temple is The Bayon with 400 gigantic carved stone faces on its towers. We also visited Tonie Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Asia. Our trip was inspired by our son Sean (Thunderbird HS 1996), an avid scuba diver and frequent visitor to Thailand and Cambodia. We accepted his invitation to visit this distant part of the world. Sean’s sister, Rachelle McCracken (Thunderbird HS 1995) and her husband Michael also quickly agreed to the trip. The entire family met at the Golden Beach Resort on the Andaman Sea at Krabi, Thailand. Krabi, on southern Thailand’s west coast, is a region characterized by sheer limestone cliffs, dense mangrove forests, and more than a hundred offshore islands. Popular beach destinations include the Phi Phi Islands, which rise from the sea like giant rain forested boulders, James Bond Island where the movie “The Man with the Golden Gun” was filmed, and popular Maya Island the location for the “Beach” starring Leonardo DeCaprio. We spent 4 days on various speed boats, and a sunset cruise, exploring the islands and also made a trip to an elephant sanctuary where we were up close and personal with several elephants. Overall, it was a great trip contrasting stunning temple tours with the relaxed beach life of the warm Andaman sea.

Spring Break, is it over? Where did you go? What did you do? It has been kind of a crazy year with weather breaking records in all areas, More rain, more snow, and more snow, more rain! But as I look around I do not think any of the weather restrictions put dampers on Spring Break and the wonderful time and memories that were made. Check out the social media posts and you will see, many great places, meals, cold drinks, fantastic views, calm waters, and faraway places we dream of. As an adult, working in a daily job, we don’t really get “Spring Break”, or we really don’t plan for it. 2019, this year I really missed that my “kids” my niece and nephews I’d taken on spring break for years, were in “real jobs”, graduated from college and or busy interning. March was the time we shuffled off to Mexico, packed the car with towels, coolers, kites, helmets, movies and board games, pounds of snacks, mac and cheese and no parents! A time we laughed and told stories by the fire, snuggled in bed laughing for hours, shopping for the latest trinket and collected shells by the seaside. Lived by the sun and moon, and had no sense of time, except for the hunger pangs for street tacos and hot sweet churros sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. A chance to practice their Spanish, and learn the peso conversion was such fun, a true education of a different culture and learning that the world wasn’t truly flat. Travel has been the best and most treasured gift I can and will continue to give my family. I had to go alone this year, I played on the beach, kayaked with the dolphins, sipped the “good” tequila, and danced in the streets, listening to the “Mexican Bandas”, while staying up late watching the full moons dance across the sea. I kept the dates on my calendar, sneaking away for a few weekends. Spring break is relaxing, refreshing, and time to reinvent, and recharge. I know that someday, they will come back, bringing their kids on spring break, and we will play in the sand, eat warm fresh tortillas, while watching the pelicans dive for dinner.

NCL, Inc. Helps Inspire Hope BY MOLLY KRESIN National Charity League, Incorporated (NCL, Inc.) is a mother daughter service organization in Moon Valley that works with several philanthropies in the community. Hope Women’s Center has become a favorite among both mothers and daughters since our partnership began over two years ago. This organization helps women and teens who are in crisis by providing resources, education and one-on-one mentoring. Mother-daughter teams serve in variety of ways at Hope Women’s Center including helping in the children’s room, serving meals, assisting with educational classes, general supply sorting and organizing, as well as office needs. The center has significant needs each summer and tends to lose more regular volunteers over these months. Our NCL, Inc. members often have more time to volunteer during the summer months, further promoting an already successful partnership. Program support coordinator Eliana Meissner recently stated, “We love our NCL volunteers… I can give them any job and it will get done.” Helping provide woman and children with opportunities that most of us take for granted has been an enlightening and rewarding experience for my daughter and me. We tend to take for granted having not only the simple necessities of daily life such as food, transportation, and a safe home, but also the privilege of going to school, attending college, and heading into a successful career and family life. It can be eye-opening to realize that many women and children in our own city simply do not have these same opportunities. My daughter and I recently spent time helping to organize and restock the Women’s Resource Center. The Resource Center is a “store” where women are able to use points they earn by attending classes to buy supplies for their families including toiletries, diapers, food and clothing. GenerationZ Cars - a Very Special Jaguar XFR-S B Y J O H A N S W A R T, C O R N E L S W A R T & J A N S W A R T “I have a Jaaaaag”, yes nobody can say that as well as Jeremy Clarkson from the car show Grand Tour that is featured on Amazon. Jaguar is a car brand that is associated with highly desired vehicles that combine luxury, sportiness and envy like no other vehicle brand can. Reliability was an issue and according to us the British should be limited to designing cars but banned from manufacturing them. It was only when Ford took Jaguar over that the last piece of the puzzle fell in place and reliability on par with their American, Japanese and perhaps German luxury counterparts was established. We have tested exciting vehicles over the last year but nothing came close to the Jaguar XFR-S we tested this month. Needless to say, the night before our meeting was a sleepless one and for good reason. A quiet 4-door soft riding boulevard cruiser makes you want to sip your Dutch Bros drink in the back seat while listening to soft calming music does not completely characterize this car’s bipolar personality. With the touch of a button this Jag can turn into a very fast angry roaring Jaguar (the magic button was very James Bond). If you wonder why this Jag is so special, here is why. Only 100 made it into the hands of a very few lucky American owners. Our car was a rare blue color and the Jaguar interior was typical of a luxury

British vehicle – awesome quality and material feel. However, no burr walnut in this car – the carbon fiber dash inserts reminds the occupants that they are in a XFR-S and so does the R-S decals in the seats. If this car could run for Governor of California, it would easily win. The normal Jaguar XF body and styling were sent to the gym with lots of steroids and in the XFR-S, the suspension was further stiffened by another 40%, and the adaptive dampers much firmer in the normal and dynamic settings. Yes, you can also adjust the suspension. In addition, the XFR-S has a new rear subframe and stiffer bushing. The enormous brake calipers and discs are untouched and produce eye popping deceleration. Interestingly, ducting under the body was added to improve cooling. Twenty-inch rims came standard with 265/35 front and 295/30 rear rubber. To reduce lift at high speed, the fascias front and rear and new rocker panels were added … and a wing was added which was kind of out of place for a Jaaaag, but a necessity. This engine under full chat produces the most amazing lyrics that is equal to a Mercedes GTS AMG and a C63 – for a petrol-head, that puts Andrea Bocelli to shame. The supercharged blown 5.0-liter V-8 produced 550hp and 502 lb-ft produced at a low 2500rpm – that is enough power to power a small city. The owner of our test car decided that it was not good enough and upgraded the power to somewhere in the 700hp region and gone is the speed limiter. To deal with this power increase he squeezed in 305 tires in the rear and 295 tires in the front. Where the continued on page 12

There is a beautiful cat that I keep seeing roaming around Piping Rock in Hillcrest west. Once I got him/her to come to me and he/she is very friendly. But I wasn’t able to capture him/her. The cat has no collar so I couldn’t tell if he/she is a stray but he/she appears to be well fed and healthy. The cat is about 50% white and the other 50% is a grey/white/black tabby. I am so afraid that this beautiful cat will fall victim to coyotes, hawks, owls, or raccoons. I suspect the cat may belong to someone in Hillcrest or in Moon Valley near the north gates of Hillcrest. Please, please, advise everyone that cats who are allowed outside live very short lives and often end with very tragic deaths.

Does your estate plan need an adjustment? B Y L I B B Y B A N K S , T H E L AW O F F I C E O F L I B B Y B A N K S , P L L C , E S TAT E P L A N N I N G Life can be unpredictable. When change happens, as it inevitably will, we have to adjust – adjust our goals, our expectations, our daily activities – in order to face the challenges coming our way. Change can affect all aspects of your life and it can affect your estate plan as well. You may have put a wonderful estate plan in place that adresses all the essentials: avoiding probate, minimizing taxes, assuring someone is there to care for you and your assets if you are incapacitated, and passing on your assets as easily and inexpensively as possible. However, when life brings new

challenges or changes, you may need some revisions or fine-tuning. So, when should you review – and possibly renew – your estate plan? Changes in the Law One of the major changes that can require you to revisit your estate plan is a change to federal or state law. In Arizona, the trust code changed in 2008, allowingfor ceretain distributions to be made in ways that weren’t possible or feasible in the past. If your Trust was put in place before 2008, a review is definitely in order. In addition, the federal estate tax exemption was raised to $11.4 Million per person (adjusted for inflation) in 2018. The estate plan you put in place to avoid the much lower threshold for taxes may not be needed. With these changes in mind, you may want to put in place a far simpler plan that is easier for your surviving spouse and children to administer. Changes in Your Life Clearly, if you’ve gotten married or divorced, a change in your estate plan is required. Yet often a client comes to me years after they married with a plan that doesn’t even mention their current spouse. Unfortunately, I’ve also had to console a spouse who finds out too late that her husband not only failed to change his estate plan, but also left his life insurance to a former spouse, a sister, or worst of all, a girlfriend. If you are leaving a marriage or a long-term relationship, make sure you leave new estate planning documents in place too. There are also less obvious indicators that you should be getting a review. Have you had more children? Are in-laws or grandchildren now in the picture? It may be good to be sure you know exactly what happens to your estate once you are gone. Perhaps the child you thought would never be able to handle money well has now proved you wrong! Another child may have creditor issues and

Your assets may have changed as well. Maybe an inheritance has come your way. How do you want that to be handled on your death? Have the assets been properly titled to the trust? All of these items should be discussed with your attorney in your estate planning review. Changes in the Lives of Your Agents The people you’ve chosen to act with regard to your estate plan – your trustees, guardians for your children, healthcare agents – may also have life changes. When they do, it may be wise to revisit your plan. Are these people still able to serve – and still willing? Are they still the right choices for trustees or guardians? Remember that the trustee for your just married estate may not be the right one for your more complicated situation today. The guardians you picked for your sweet 3-year-old might not be able to handle your now rebellious teenager. Changes in Your Children’s Lives It’s not only changes in your life that might necessitate a review of your estate plan. As your children grow older and begin to build their own lives, they will experience life changes that can affect what you have put in place. Perhaps they have gotten married, had a child, or are going through a divorce. It is important to make sure your long-term planning will benefit your descendants in the manner that you want. Moving From State to State Another significant life event that may require a change in your estate plan is a move to another state. While your attorney may have assured you that your documents will remain legally enforceable in the new state, a review is necessary to make absolutely certain that this is true. A local estate planner can advise you about whether your existing plan requires any changes. A Review Every Three to Five Years I recommend that my clients review their trusts with me every three to five years. That way we can discuss any changes in their lives and in the law. If a change is needed, we may be able to do a simple amendment. If something major has happened, we can amend the entire trust. We tailor the change in the trust to the change in your life! Make every month heart health month WELLNESS IN MOTION BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER, CMT DC February was American Heart Month, but heart health is really a global issue; after all, we’ve all got hearts and these days, we all do things that put our health in peril, in the form of heart disease, stroke, heart attacks and other life-threatening conditions. Your heart deserves to be treated well every month of the year, but let’s get started during this time of awareness by highlighting the latest research on how men and women can maximize heart health and reduce their risk of heart problems. Heart Health for Women: Avoid Diet Drinks: Drinking two or more artificially sweetened beverages a day is associated with an increased risk of heart attack, clot-based death and early death in women over the age of 50. Published in Stroke, the study found that women who drank more than one diet drink daily had the following increased risks compared to women who drank one or fewer artificially sweetened drinks.: 23 percent more likely to suffer any type of stroke 31 percent more likely to suffer a stroke due to an artery block 29 percent more likely to suffer a heart attack 16 percent more likely to die from any cause Of particular concern: Even women in the study with no history of heart disease or diabetes had more than double the risk of a clot-based stroke if they drank two or more artificially sweetened beverages a day.

Heart Health for Men: Power of the Push-Up: Is the number of push-ups a man can perform in one minute a predictor of heart disease risk? Yes, according to new research in JAMA Network Open. Men who can do at least 40 pushups within a minute’s time are 96 percent less likely to develop heart disease compared to men who perform less than 10 push-ups in the same time. Findings are based on a 10-year evaluation of more than 1,000 male firefighters (average age: 40 years) that included timed push-up tests and evaluation of V02 max (maximum oxygen consumption during intense exercise), body-mass index (BMI), blood pressure and other variables at baseline. During the decade-long study period, initial push-up capacity proved to be the strongest predictor of heart disease among the variables assessed. What You Can Do Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world, pure and simple, and in many cases, it’s avoidable with proper diet, consistent physical activity and other lifestyle choices such as stress reduction, avoiding smoking, etc. While the above studies examined specific age groups, it’s reasonable to assume that limiting your artificial sweetener consumption and maximizing your fitness (whether or not you can actually do a full 40 push-ups in one minute) are smart choices when it comes to heart health – regardless of age or gender. Rookie Mom: Why we need to be “mean” to our children B Y B R I G H I D C O N S TA B L E What I’m about to tell is an Absolutely True Story. I capitalize this because I never thought that this would happen to me or that I would react the way I did. During March’s spring break, I watched my 12-year-old niece, Mara, and my 10-year-old nephew, Ben. They love spending time with my 2-year-old daughter Brynn. First off, I’d like to preface that I consider myself a “nice” aunt. I make the cheesy jokes; I offer unsolicited advice; I stalk their Instagrams to see if they’re posting civil content (and even use relevant emojis). You know, aunt stuff. Well, we decided to stop by Target for a quick errand. Brynn just goes wild at Target; she refuses to sit in the cart, even if I buy her a cake pop at Starbucks or popcorn at the cafeteria. Mara and Ben promised to watch her, but “stay nearby.” I was checking out the clearance items in women’s clothing, hearing them laughing with Brynn, when I turn around after the laughter dissipated and they are gone. I was just perusing for maybe two minutes, three minutes tops. Calmly, I checked the kids clothing area loudly asking, “Mara? Ben?” No where. Then onto the baby area. “Mara? Ben?” The game area. “Mara? Ben.” Media area. “Mara? Ben?” This is where I start to panic. Sincerely, my body is in a thin film of sweat and I’m now yelling, “Mara! Ben!” without regard for anyone. A Target employee stops me and I’m just in blind crazy mode-- Where is my 2 year old? Where is my niece and nephew? Did someone take them? Target Employee asks me what they’re wearing, and I honestly couldn’t remember. Just my daughter’s outfit. She says that she’ll make an announcement for them to meet at the Fitting Rooms. I blindly ignore the Target Employee and say thank you, but am now openly running around the store, not giving an eff what people think of me: “Mara! Ben!” I’m crying now. Openly balling and shouting their names. Target Employee #2 approaches me and keeps it short: “Lost kids? I’m calling it in.” And then she takes out her magic walkie talkie and tells all employees to look for what Mara, Ben, and Brynn were wearing. She tells security to stand by the doors, telling me that we’ll watch the security cameras to see if I can locate them.

I’m now deep and thick in pure panic mode, crying, shaking, just imagining this middle-aged bearded guy with a gun to Mara’s back, Ben holding Brynn, all kids crying -- just the absolute worst case scenario. I’m crying for the loss of my daughter, completely new to the world. For the deep loss that my family would feel losing such amazing children when I hear someone over the walkie talkie say, “We found them.” The shaking only increases, and it’s replaced with pure and unadulterated anger. Two or three Target employees are hugging me, saying that it’s going to be okay, and then I see my daughter, who I grab and hug automatically, and begin yelling at my niece and nephew. “Where were you! I told you to stay by me at all times! I thought someone had kidnapped you and were going to hurt you!” Mara shuts down, clearly angry at my overreaction. Ben is over-apologetic saying that he didn’t realize it was that big of a deal. Again, all in public, loudly, with everyone looking. A mom walks past me and says, “They don’t know that the anger you’re feeling right now is a different, deeper form of love, especially when all you want to do is kick their butts.” Ben says, “Brynn was walking all over. We needed to follow her. I didn’t want to get her upset by telling her that she couldn’t go another way.” And again, not caring about my surroundings, but only making sure these kids learn a lesson: If you want Brynn to respect you, you need to say “no” and draw your boundaries. And in this moment, I realize that I’m just projecting that lesson onto myself. Because before, I was a cool aunt. But today, I’m really okay with being mean. (Oh, and if you were wondering, they found them in the feminines toiletries aisle, with my 2-year-old holding pads.)

“normal” XFR-S will jump from 0-to-60-mph in about four seconds and be limited to 186 mph, his Schwarzeneggerian XFR-S will likely crack the 4 second mark and 186 mph could be considered a cruising speed. Perhaps we need to add the caveat, “do not try this at home”. We can only describe acceleration as brutal and this car does not accelerate – it jumps to a desired speed. Moms that want eye’s behind their heads to watch their kids – yes, this car will do just that with Mom eyes! What amazed us was the ride which remained comfortable while riding on the current Phoenix roads. For a super sedan to have such a smooth ride on our pothole populated roads (yes we need to plant flowers in the potholes – hopefully the city gets the message) is quite amazing and British sport cars are known for this characteristic. Other than their German counterparts, the Brits figured out how to obtain handling and yet not shake your kidneys to the point where they provide an ultimatum – sell the Beemer or I leave you. This car is not just a car for GenZ to aspire owning. This is a car that allows you to take the kids to school, go on vacation, cruise the California boulevards and while you are at it, you can stop by Wild Horse Pass Motor Sports Park and win a couple of drag races. While the BMW M5, Mercedes AMG and nearly any Tesla can also do this, the XFR-S’s bipolar character, exhaust sound, 4-door saloon configuration and smooth ride sets it apart from the pack. Now Alfred, be a good fellow, fill up the Jag and leave it at the front door …….. the Madam and I would like to go for a dainty Sunday cruise ……………. on the Phoenix Raceway!

My name is DJ Gleash. I have been a member of the North Valley boys team charity (btc) league for the past four years. These are a few of the Philanthropies I have completed my volunteer hours with, Back to School Clothing Drive, Desert Mission Food Bank, Homeward Bound, Moms Place, Packages from Home, Tiger Mountain Foundation, Joy Bus Diner, and The Pat Tillman Foundation. The Pat’s Run is my favorite event because it ties into my passion for football, and a college that I grew up rooting for, ASU. Pat Tillman is such an inspiration to a lot of people. Pat was an outstanding football player for Arizona State and Arizona Cardinals. When the attacks of September 11, 2001 happened he left the National Football league to go fight for his country in the Army, ultimately giving his life. Every year, I volunteer at the Pat’s Run. I help work the finish line, the Runner Refreshment Zone the day of Pat’s Run. I help pass out bottled water, hand out finisher medals, and hand out fruit to participants after they cross the finish line. The finish line is in the Arizona State University Stadium, which always brings in many participants from all over the Valley. This popular event usually sells out. Great event to celebrate Pat Tillman’s legacy and the Foundation supporting military veterans and spouses. btc North Valley will be out there again this year supporting Pat’s Run April 27. I am a proud member of Boys Team Charity! I really enjoy all the different people that I meet out in the Community. I enjoy giving back my time to others.

Musicians corner, Focusing on the Folks

On March 9th, 2019, JC Scholarly began its seventh season hosting a Spring Folk Competition. It was open to beginner, advanced beginner and intermediate level music students. This year, the judges job was a difficult one. Several quality performances competed for Grand Champion. This year, Skylar Warren and Grace Aratin, won the best of show. Their rendition of The Water is Wide included beautiful vocal harmonies demonstrating their ability to harmonize and weave counter melodies. They have been invited to appear in the courtyard along with Judges Choice Award winners: pianists- Sabastian and Mireya Cordova, vocalist Ava Chanman and violinist Melina Hale. The events are co-sponsored by: JC Scholarly, a non-profit organization whose focus is to bring peaceful solutions to difficult situations through music and science performance, Allegro Music Company, FroYo, Cavemanburgers and Awaken Your Genius. You can hardly wait to take possession and start turning it into your dream home. Think how devastated you would be if you did something, during this process, that might impact your ability to close on your new purchase. Before you make any big moves, such as buying new furniture, moving money around, or changing your pay plan from salaried to commission (because you can earn more), be sure to consult with your mortgage loan officer to see if there are any unintended consequences. Many of these may seem obvious, but here are some “don’t” items to consider: • Don’t initiate any new credit – anything that would trigger a new credit check, Lenders check your credit several times during the process. New lines of credit can affect your critical ratios and your FICO scores – which may affect your ability to qualify. • Don’t close, consolidate, or obtain any new credit cards. All changes must be explained to the underwriter. Usually this occurs right at closing time. Closing accounts can be as devastating to your credit as opening new accounts. • Don’t pay off any substantial debt (unless required for qualification). You have been pre-qualified with this debt. Paying off debt must be explained and may diminish the cash reserves required to qualify and close. • Don’t make any large deposits, especially cash, without a complete paper trail. Large deposits must always be sourced and cash is almost always untraceable. These are big “red-flags” to your underwriter. • Don’t change jobs or the way you get paid. A two-year job history is usually required. A new job is fraught with intangibles. • Don’t change bank accounts. New accounts are difficult to source. They require explanations and paper trails. A few years ago, I did a mortgage for a well-qualified, highly compensated doctor with excellent credit scores. He went to a big chain stores to buy some

moving supplies and they offered him a substantial discount on his purchase if he applied for their credit card. That new card, with a very low limit, delayed his closing by four days. He was pretty upset because he wanted to move over the weekend when his practice was closed. The bottom line is to discuss any financial changes with your mortgage loan officer. Their job is to guide you through the process and simplify the way.

To the South there is the North Mountain Range and to the west Moon Trail and to the east Lookout Mountain. These are considered the cousins to North Mountain, The City of Phoenix has great information: like Trail Rating guides, Trail maps and addresses to access the parks. The Trails Rating Guide describes the elevation change, , accesses the difficulty from easiest to extremely difficult. Ruts, loose rocks, uneven footing as well as the elevation change helps to determine if that is the type of hike you could or should be taking. There is parking information and sometimes there is no parking available. There are Entrance hours usually sunrise to sunset. Not all trails are the same. From 1958 to 1995 parcels of land had been acquired to build the Lookout Mountain preserve. Phoenix provides residents and visitors more than 41000 acres of desert parks and mountain preserve land with 200 plus Parks & Recreation If you are looking for recreational and cultural activities, you’ve come to the right place. The links on the City of Phoenix web site provide information about bicycling, hiking, golfing and other recreational pursuits. There are links on that page to help plan a day. We meet in conjunction with Black Mountain Community Alliance. Our Community Action Officers are there and many different departments of law enforcement and some staff from the City of Phoenix. This month’s meeting was incredibly informative. Specially trained service dogs help the police deal with/ solve crimes where children are victims. These dogs are bred for their gentleness and have two years of training. The City of Phoenix is very progressive and has wonderful men and women officers that work with these special dogs. One doesn’t realize how fragile young children are when confronted with abuse, and or crime. These dogs help to comfort the victim(s) during investigations and even during a trial. Chain were first made with plates and pins. Then small rectangle blocks were added then rollers. Every other tooth on the gears was deleted. Chain was 1 inch by 3/16 big by todays standards. Modern chains are ½ by 1/8 no more missing teeth much more flexable. Skip chain was discontinued by most bicycle companys by the 1950s sum offerd both chain types. Phoenix’s budget sets a plan to fund important city services, departments and functions such as Police, Fire, Water, Parks, Streets, Libraries, Neighborhood Services and many more. On March 19, the City Manager presented his 2019-20 Trial Budget to the Mayor and City Council. Staring April 2 through April 18, the city will be hosting 19 budget hearings citywide for community members to voice their input on what they would like to see in the budget. The Mayor, City Councilmembers and city management will attend various budget hearings to share details on the proposed budget, take feedback and answer any questions. He was Email: j993@cox.net able to make it to the bank, library, grocery store, drug store, and barber shop. He also drove in the mountains on two lane roads and did just fine. However, I noticed several cues that led me to want him tested. A neurologist tested him and found no Alzheimer’s, but said nothing about driving, although several neurological deficits were noticed. After several more TIAs and medical emergencies, I became really concerned and his primary care doctor said in no uncertain terms, “Take his keys away.” But, to take keys away from a man who has driven with no accidents for 64 years was a bit much for me to tackle. Instead, I made an appointment for him to have his driving skills tested at the Honor Health Occupational Therapy lab. The evaluation cost $185 but it was well worth the money. I’m not sure why insurance companies and Medicare don’t pay for this as it seems the money would be well spent rather than funding accident victim costs. He did not pass the exam. He did well in several areas, but not at all close in others. Manual dexterity is tested as well as mental agility, memory, and multi-tasking. There is a big board with lights flashing. There are pictures to interpret and drawings to copy and numbers to work out. When I think of what it takes to drive on an eight-lane road and read signs quickly and survive, I am surprised there are not more accidents. Multi-tasking is the big challenge...watching on-coming cars, keeping track of following and side-by-side vehicles, listening to passengers talk and radios blaring, obeying speed limits and traffic lights, and seeing and avoiding pedestrians, bikes, and motorcycles...it all adds up to multi-tasking big time. So, if you know of someone young or old who you think might be compromised as a driver, you now know there is a good and compassionate test. I know he hated giving up his freedom, but, so far, he has a patient chauffeur...me. And, we are able to spend more time together and have fun safely...a good thing!

Teen Lifeline Asks Community for Help Keeping Teens SAFE

This spring, suicide prevention specialists at Teen Lifeline are reminding those who come in contact with teenagers it is a stressful time of year that comes with increased risks for suicide. The reminder comes as the 24/7/365 nonprofit suicide prevention hotline prepares for the average 10 percent increase in calls that are answered each year following spring break. “We know the time leading up to and after spring break can be especially stressful for teens,” says Michelle Moorhead, Teen Lifeline executive director. “Stressors can be anything from midterm exams to a break from friends which can leave teens feeling overwhelmed and alone.” “Connection to others, hope for the future, access to services, and basic coping and life skills all help reduce risk and ultimately prevent teen suicide,” she adds. “But it takes the entire community to help our most vulnerable teens. It is important to know the things that put your teen at risk as well as the things that will protect them from the risk of suicide.” Experts at Teen Lifeline are asking parents, educators and community members for their assistance in reducing teen suicide by following the acronym SAFE. S. Search the back of your teen’s school ID. If you have a child in middle school or high school, check the back of your student’s school ID to make sure it has the Teen Lifeline phone number. If you don’t see the hotline number listed, contact administrators at your child’s school now and ask to have it added. Encourage administrators to call Teen Lifeline to implement this lifesaving program. A. Ask about thoughts of suicide. If you are concerned about your child, it is important to ask them about thoughts of suicide. It is a common misconception that you can give someone the idea of suicide, if you ask about it. Openly asking the question gives your teen permission to talk about their feelings, including the emotions, frustrations or challenges they are going through.

F. Form connections. Strong connections to family, friends and community support are a protective factor for teens. To help prevent teen suicide, form a stronger connection with a teen in your life today. For example, send a text to ask how their day is going, plan something fun to do together, eat dinner together or ask about how things are going in their life. E. Encourage positive relationships. Many times, a teen’s friends help them feel supported and cared for. These friendships can come through school, sports teams, clubs, church groups and even social media. Encourage connections with peers and adults who are a positive influence in a teen’s life. Think twice before cutting off all contact with friends or social media, which can actually increase risk. Instead opt for allowing some connection to continue but limit the time or duration. In 2018, Teen Lifeline received more than 23,000 calls and nearly 1,400 texts to its suicide prevention hotline. Most of those calls came from Arizona adolescents ranging in age from 10 to 19. An average of one out of every three calls to the service is from a teen considering suicide. The vast majority of those calls were resolved with a plan for getting a caring adult involved. Most callers hung up feeling as though their problem was more manageable, increasing their hope for the future. If you know a teenager who is struggling, suggest they reach out to the Teen Lifeline hotline at (602) 248-TEEN (8336) or (800) 248-TEEN. The service is staffed by teen peer counselors from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. every day of the year. Trained suicide prevention counselors staff the phones at all other hours. Teens can also text with peer counselors at (602) 248-8336 between the hours of 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. daily. Concerned parents are encouraged to contact Teen Lifeline with questions related to their teen’s behavior, to discuss how to help their child or to find community resources for additional intervention. Thanks for our Air National Guard Copperheads BY BRET ALDIERI, MVNA PRESIDENT This month I depart from writing about local issues that affect Moon Valley to share a recent experience. I was fortunate to be invited to accompany an air refueling flight recently with the Air National Guard based in Phoenix. They are called the 161st Air Refueling Wing or the Copperheads, stationed at the Goldwater Air National Guard base within Sky Harbor Airport. Our host was Colonel Patrick W. Donaldson, wing commander. During the pre-flight briefing, we were informed about the history and mission of the base going back to its beginnings in 1957 to current day operations. I was joined by Councilman Sal DiCiccio, Airport Assistant Director Sarah Demory and others from Phoenix city staff. This was a great opportunity to better understand the mission of the Air National Guard and the important work they perform every day to help keep all Americans safe. This base supports daily operations for fighter flights from the local Air Force bases of Luke and Davis-Monthan. The base has sent many personnel to support most of the US missions and conflicts overseas. In addition, they are available to aid Arizona residents in cases of natural disasters or other emergencies, as the KC-135 aircraft can be easily converted for medical evacuations and support for emergency responders. We arrived at the base at 6:00 AM (before sunrise) and had a preflight briefing followed by a short safety review. At around 7:00 we headed out with our flight crew to a KC-135 aircraft and were in the air by 7:30 AM. The KC-135 is based on the Boeing B707 commercial aircraft that first flew in the late 1950s, but has seen constant equipment upgrades throughout its life – so

it has very modern flight avionics equipment. Our flight took us out to Lake Havasu where we met up with a squadron of eight F-16 fighter jets to perform refueling. Each of us got to witness first-hand the boom operator in the rear of the aircraft, line up and perform the refueling operation. It was quite impressive to look out the window and see three of these fighters flying in formation off our wing tip as each one waited their turn to get refueled. Once the mission was complete – we headed back to Sky Harbor and landed around 10:30AM. It was an impressive flight and a great way to kick off a Friday morning. It’s good to know the important work that the men and women of this base do every day as they and their families are part of our Phoenix community. Their work is vital to the national security of the United States and they perform their role in supporting fighter jet training and missions every day. The guard is now being considered for a newer KC-46 aircraft which is based on the newer Boeing B767 commercial aircraft. These larger planes require more space for proper ground operations and this need is being factored into the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport strategic growth plans over the next 15 years.

GUHSD Free Summer Academy Programs & National Merit Semifinalists BY CIARA ESCALANTE Glendale Union High School District’s Summer Academy programs are coming soon and will be open to sixth through eighth grade students and current district-enrolled students. Students will enjoy these signature programs that will prepare them for the all-important next step – both academically and socially. Enjoy programs like Project SHARP and High School 101 or explore new subjects such as culinary, fire and law, coding, engineering and robotics, honors algebra and honors geometry. All GUHSD courses are offered in an environment where students receive quality instruction by certified teachers. Programs to recover deficient credits will also be available. Many of these free programs are offered on one of our nine high school campuses, while other courses can be accessed online. GUHSD National Merit Semifinalist Students Advance to Finalist Status

Glendale Union High School District is honored and proud to announce that all of our 2019 National Merit Semifinalists have officially advanced to the Finalist level of the competition. Our academically high-performing students include five Sunnyslope seniors Jeremy Becker, Zoe Friese, Derek Gemar, McKenna Kellner and Michael Perry; one Thunderbird senior Danielle Zylstra; and one Independence senior Alexander Sigg. To be considered for this designation, students fulfilled several academic requirements. They are now eligible for a $2,500 scholarship and will be competing for one of 2,500 available National Merit Scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis.
