A very warm welcome to our Summer Issue. We love this time of year and the excitement that six weeks off school brings to the children. It can seem a long time for parents though!

Six weeks of planning activities, family time and holidays, as well as factoring in working schedules, can be tricky. We have put together plenty of ideas in this magazine for you.

Head to the Your SUMMER feature which offers up a huge selection of fun days out for all the family, allowing you to plan in some family time and day trips together. Plan ‘your summer’ and make lots of memories along the way!

BeWILDerwood: A summer of FUN and stinky new adventures

An unforgettable outdoor family adventure at Tatton Park this summer

“We’re Going on a Bear Hunt!”

Tatton Park’s iconic gardens are home to a special collection of eight bear sculptures inspired by Michael Rosen’s classic children’s story, providing a colourful trail of imagination, discovery, and excitement for families. Make it a full day out and continue the adventures on the farm, where you’ll find two more colourful bears, as well their summer activities including a maize maze, storytelling sessions, hatchery fun and taster Tuesdays. Manchester International Festival is back

MIF25 turns the city into a summer playground of ideas! Explore how football meets art in Football City, Art United, march with giant puppet animals in The Herds, as public art confronts the topic of climate change, and see what kids dream for the future in An Inheritance. There’s FREE family fun every festival weekend too, on Festival Square at Aviva Studios, which is back for MIF25 from 4th-20th July, with free live music, family activities and late-night takeovers. MIF25 is just the beginning of a summer of festivities at Aviva Studios. SciTech 25: an amazing hands-on science holiday club

In 1991 fifty children attended the first SciTech Science Holiday Club. It was so well received that in 1992 they moved to Manchester Metropolitan University where the capacity reached 300 children, and so the concept of enthusiastic engagement of children in science and technology was truly begun! The self-evident success of the SciTech approach meant that in subsequent years the summer schools not only delivered spectacular hands-on science to capacity audiences in Manchester but also across Europe, Canada, Vietnam and South Africa. Each day covers a different subject and with 55 subjects from Animation to Zoology, there is no shortage of amazing Science to keep active minds amazed and earn SciTech the accolade of “a Holiday Club like no other.”

Quentin Blake and Me

In this vibrant and lively family exhibition, Lowry will be celebrating the work of one of the most popular and successful writers and illustrators of children’s books, Quentin Blake. Blake has written or illustrated over 500 books, including working with famous authors like Roald Dahl, David Walliams, and Michael Morpurgo. This exhibition is running from Saturday 19th July and will be a delightful experience for all, featuring a vast collection of his work, fun interactives, games to play, and plenty of opportunities for young visitors and their families to write and draw their own stories. Music, entertainment and world-class cricket

The Hundred is heading back to Manchester on 6th August! Manchester Originals will be in action in the exhilarating 100-ball cricket competition at Emirates Old Trafford with four men’s and women’s double-header matches in August as world-class stars Jos Buttler and Sophie Ecclestone entertain the crowds. WEDNESDAY 6TH AUGUST

Playday is a national event to celebrate and highlight the importance of play! Play is essential for children and young people’s development and wellbeing – and one of their rights under the UN convention on the rights of the child. Manchester is on a journey to become a UNICEF-UK recognised Child Friendly City, so we’re celebrating bigger and better than before! 2025’s theme is ‘Spaces for play’ and there’ll be events at spaces across the city including libraries, leisure centres, parks and cultural venues. Junior Mathematical Olympiad success

Well done to Junior School pupils Simon and Yihang, who have qualified for the Junior Mathematical Olympiad – an outstanding achievement, particularly as they are currently only in year 5! It is typically aimed at the top-performing pupils in years 7 and 8 across the UK. The Junior Maths Challenge is the largest maths competition for this age group in the UK, with over 150,000 participants each year. Only around the top 1,200 scorers from the Junior Mathematical Challenge are invited to take part in the Olympiad. The Junior Mathematical Olympiad is designed to challenge the most able young problem-solvers in the country, and it is remarkable to see Simon and Yihang performing at this level at such a young age.
