“The best thing about fostering is witnessing the growth and resilience of children”
Wokingham Borough Foster Carers, Kim and Stuart: “We wanted to make a positive difference so thought we would look further into fostering. We spoke to our children, and they were happy to give it a go. We as a family felt that we could provide children with a safe and nurturing environment.
However, fostering also comes with its challenges, such as navigating complex emotions, and supporting children through trauma. Despite these challenges, because of the support and resources provided to both foster carers and children, the opportunity to positively influence a child’s life has made it all worthwhile.
Being part of the council’s fostering community/family has been great – the support groups, training and events are a good way to meet people and learn.”
For information on fostering with Wokingham Borough, call 0300 131 2797 or visit https://fostering.wokingham.gov.uk

Children’s Mental Health
A BLOG WRITTEN BY BECKY HOARE FROM POP UP PLAY VILLAGE
Children’s mental health is a priority. As parents and carers, we strive to have happy and healthy children and support them in any way we can. With so much going on in our children’s lives, it is often hard to know how best to support them especially when we aren’t with them all the time and don’t always know what situations they have faced each day. My children are 8 and 10 years old now and this is what I particularly find difficult. They spend so much time at school and when they come home and they haven’t had a particularly good day or they are quiet about their day, it is sometimes hard to work through it with them and know how best to support them. No child is the same so there will never be a strategy or best way to offer support.
I think a key priority is talking with our children. Talking through each day and offering guidance where we can. Consider the best time to talk about their day, for example a special time at nighttime before they go to bed, reflecting on the greatest parts about their day and then something that wasn’t so great. Our children are in the driving seat to their mental wellbeing, but we can be there on the side lines cheering them on and boosting their confidence as much as possible. Talking is so important, and the power of speech goes a very long way. If you have a child who struggles to get out their words or talk about their day then the thumbs up, thumbs down strategy might work well. As parents, supporting our children’s mental health is tough and there is no one solution. All we can do is be there to support and guide our children and do the best we can.

The Institute of A uaphobia
Aquaphobia affects many people in our communities. The impact on an aquaphobic’s daily routine, is staggering. Some may not shower –the thought of water pouring over their head or face is horrible. Some may not go on beach holidays – the sea is out of bounds for them. Some won’t drive over a bridge if there is water underneath. For some the smell of chlorine and the acoustics of a noisy swimming pool is just too much. ‘Some’ people in the UK alone, equals 13 million people. Twice the population of London, cannot swim and are scared of water. These people are overlooked and excluded from many social situations due to their fear. There is help available, specialist Aquaphobia Coaches from the Institute of Aquaphobia can help change a relationship with water – for life. W: www.instituteofaquaphobia.com

• Two hours is usually plenty of time for a children’s party
• It’s good to have the entertainment at the start, with food afterwards
• Ask about any allergies or dietary requirements on the invitation
• Put an RSVP date on the invitation so that you know numbers in advance of the party – this makes the planning and catering a bit easier
• It’s useful to have a basic first aid kit on hand or check if your venue has one you can use
• If parents are staying for the party, don’t forget the teas and coffees too, they are always welcomed!

A note from The Head at Pangbourne College
“The modern world seems to teach us that success is easy, and talented people can achieve great things with relatively little effort. It also seems to teach us that the individual is at the centre of their own life and their needs should come above all others.
The reality, as we know, is profoundly different. Success is the result of hard work and dedication, and that happiness comes from being in the service of others. So, our children should not be afraid of difficult things and being in situations where they think they won’t succeed. They should be able to embrace failure and see it as the bridge to future success. We want our pupils to thrive in uncertain situations, to face unknown outcomes and to embrace novel experiences. The adventurous experiences at Pangbourne, driven through our adventure curriculum, means approaching life with a set of values: Freedom, Self-reliance and Responsibility.” Mr Oliver Knight, The Head, Pangbourne College.
