From family days out and easy travel to keeping children healthy, discover what’s happening locally and the services helping families make the most of the season.

Give your child their best defence against flu Flu cases often rise in December and January, but it’s not too late to protect your child. Flu can be unpleasant for children, causing fever, aches, tiredness, and in some cases can lead to serious illness requiring hospital treatment. Most children receive the vaccine as a quick, painless nasal spray. It’s effective and has been used in the UK for over ten years. School-aged children will be offered the vaccine in school, return the consent form sent to make sure your child doesn’t miss out. Children aged 2 and 3 and children with long-term health conditions can also access the vaccine at their GP practice. Community pharmacies also offer flu vaccinations for children. W: www.nhs.uk/child-flu

There’s more to discover at Adlington Golf Centre Family-owned and welcoming visitors for over 30 years, Adlington is a great place for families to play, relax and spend time together. Take on the 18-hole Australian Adventure Golf course, try something new on the four padel courts, or head to the driving range, where TrackMan technology turns golf into interactive fun for beginners and experienced players alike. When it’s time to refuel, visit the White Owl Café for drinks, snacks and tasty treats. Open to everyone, with no membership required, discover Adlington Golf Centre this winter! W: www.adlingtongolfcentre.com

Vaccinations don’t stop at primary school Immunisation is one of the most effective ways to protect young people from serious illness and help keep the whole school community healthy. Throughout secondary school, students are offered important vaccines against flu, HPV and meningococcal disease (MenACWY), alongside the teenage booster and any missed MMR vaccinations.

Chirk Castle in Wrexham

Erddig Hall and Garden, Wrexham Powis Castle in Weshpool

Twinkling Lights, Timeless Tales and Family Adventures: Christmas with National Trust Cymru From fairytale adventures and Christmas classics to twinkling lights and festive family trails, there’s plenty to discover at the places cared for by National Trust Cymru this Christmas. Nestled along the Welsh border and within easy reach of Cheshire and the Wirral, they’re the perfect setting for making magical memories together.

Chirk Castle and Garden, Wrexham

Powis Castle and Garden, Welshpool

If your family loves getting lost in a good story, then Christmas at Chirk Castle and Garden is the perfect day out. Step into Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen and follow Gerda’s journey through beautifully dressed State Rooms, where scenes from the classic fairytale bring the story to life.

As darkness falls, Powis Castle and Garden takes on a different feel as Christmas projections light up the imposing walls of the medieval castle on 12 and 13, and 18-22 December (booking essential). Wrap up warm and watch as colour, light and seasonal animations play across the historic stonework, bringing a new perspective to one of Wales’ most striking landmarks after dark.

Created by artists and theatrical set-makers, the displays transform the castle’s centuries-old interiors, with surprises waiting to be discovered around every corner. Little ones can follow the adventure as it unfolds from room to room, while grown-ups take in the ornate decorations and sparkle of the season. Whether it’s your first visit or a much-loved family tradition, this is a chance to get swept up in the story and experience a little Christmas magic together.

Erddig Hall and Garden, Wrexham Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol takes centre stage at Erddig Hall and Garden this Christmas. From Scrooge’s famous “Bah, humbug!” to the joy of Christmas morning, follow the much-loved tale of his remarkable transformation. Step inside the historic rooms and discover glittering trees, ornate decorations and seasonal touches, with familiar moments from the story waiting around every corner. Whether you’re spotting the tiny details with little ones or simply enjoying Erddig dressed for the season, there’s plenty to capture the imagination. For an extra-special visit, come along during the late-night openings (14–17 December), when twinkling lights, festive displays and the glow of Christmas transform the house and courtyard after dark. © National Trust Images, Paul Harris

Settle in with a hot chocolate or mulled wine from the Courtyard Café and enjoy the display as it unfolds. Afterwards, take a browse around the shop, where seasonal gifts and festive finds provide plenty of Christmas inspiration. During the day, little explorers will love searching for Christmas stockings hidden throughout the garden. See how many you can spot as you wander, and don’t miss the enchanting winter wonderland scenes in the Orangery, adding an extra sprinkle of Christmas magic to your visit. Christmas programmes run 28 November to 3 January and normal admission prices apply (free to National Trust members), unless otherwise stated.
