Discover the magic of Calan Gaeaf in Wales this October half term Looking for a family day out with a difference this autumn? This October half term, National Trust places across Wales are celebrating Calan Gaeaf, the traditional Welsh festival that marks the beginning of winter. Meaning ‘the first day of winter’, Calan Gaeaf falls on 1st November and has been celebrated in Wales for centuries. Rooted in folklore and seasonal traditions, it was once believed to mark the start of the darker half of the year, when the boundary between the living world and the spirit world became thinner. Communities would gather on the eve before, known as Nos Galan Gaeaf, to share stories, light fires and take part in customs designed to ward off wandering spirits. Today, visitors can enjoy family-friendly trails, storytelling, crafts and folklore-inspired adventures at National Trust properties across Wales, offering a unique way to experience Welsh culture, nature and autumn magic.
