Local NEWS

From spreading Christmas cheer in the local community to discovering festive gift ideas, family adventures and activities, explore the latest news and seasonal inspiration to make the most of the months ahead.

Help put a present under the Christmas tree Reading Family Aid has launched its 2026 Toys & Teens Appeal and calls on local residents, businesses, schools and community groups to get involved. Christmas should be a magical time for children, but thousands of families across Reading will face the difficult reality of choosing between everyday essentials and Christmas presents. The charity’s annual Toys & Teens Appeal collects toys and gifts for disadvantaged children aged 0-16 across Reading and the surrounding area. Last Christmas, the generosity of local residents, businesses and community organisations meant that 2,676 local children received a selection of presents through the appeal. Children who otherwise may have had very little or nothing to open on Christmas morning. Three simple ways to help: 1. Donate a toy or gift. 2. Organise a collection at work, school or in your community. 3. Make a financial donation The appeal relies on the generosity of the Reading community and an extraordinary volunteer effort. The final day for donations is on Saturday 5th December. For information about the Toys & Teens Appeal, donating gifts and organising a collection, visit the Reading Family Aid website. W: www.readingfamilyaid.org

As part of the National Year of Reading, Berkshire children’s charity ABC to read has committed to delivering more than 50,000 one-to-one and small group reading sessions in local schools over the coming year. The pledge responds to growing concern about falling reading for pleasure and its impact on children’s learning, wellbeing and future opportunities. ABC to read works with over 100 primary and secondary schools across Berkshire, providing trained volunteers to support children who are struggling to read. Alongside direct reading sessions, the charity runs peer-to-peer workshops that enable older pupils to help younger readers, and sessions for parents focused on building positive reading habits at home. For many children, the impact is immediate. Liam, aged eight, arrived in Year 3 lacking confidence after missing key learning during the pandemic. Reading aloud made him anxious, and he avoided books where possible. After being matched with an ABC to read volunteer, he began reading twice a week in a calm, supportive setting. Within a term, his fluency improved, his vocabulary grew, and he began choosing books for himself. If your school would like to benefit from their support or you are looking to volunteer, please email info@abctoread.org.uk or call 0118 9511336. ABC to read is the only charity in Berkshire offering a comprehensive literacy support service delivered by trained, vetted and DBS-checked volunteers. By combining structured support in schools with work that involves pupils and families, the charity aims to ensure that no child is held back simply because reading feels out of reach. W: www.abctoread.org.uk ABC to read are looking to support more Berkshire schools and are looking to recruit more volunteers – contact info@abctoread.org.uk for further information.
