A very warm welcome to our Summer Issue. We love this time of year and the excitement that six weeks off school brings to the children. It can seem a long time for parents though! Six weeks of planning activities, family time and holidays, as well as factoring in working schedules, can be tricky. We have put together plenty of ideas in this magazine for you. Head to the Holiday CLUBS feature if you are looking for activities to keep your children entertained, learning new skills and making friends, freeing up some time for yourself to work or tackle other things.

The Your SUMMER pages offer up a huge selection of fun days out for all the family, allowing you to plan in some family time and day trips together. Plan ‘your summer’ and make lots of memories along the way! Good luck to all our Year Six leavers and their parents who are moving on to secondary school – we hope your next chapter of school life is an exciting one! Activities for all ages and abilities at the Ranger Station

Make a trip to the Ranger Station at Prospect Park, Reading for some summer fun! Challenge your family and friends on the accessible 9-hole mini golf course, which has wheelchair access and specialist accessible putting equipment if needed. You can also book a session on their outdoor climbing wall called ‘The Coconut Tree’, or on the archery range. For younger children, build up their confidence and coordination skills and let them enjoy a session on the ‘Sky Tykes’ low ropes course, designed for children aged 2-7 and under 122cm in height. Summer Safari at The Lexicon

From 1st to 31st August, visitors to The Lexicon will be entertained by some very unusual guests. Throughout the town centre animatronic animals such as an elephant, crocodile, giraffe, lion and tiger will be forming part of a special Safari trail! Hop aboard The Lexicon Express and wander around the town centre to discover the whereabouts of all the animatronic and other animals that make-up the trail. Complete the trial leaflet, pop it in one of The Lexicon’s post boxes and you could be in with a chance to win one of three family tickets to Woburn Safari worth £114 each. Join this year ’s Summer Reading Challenge

The Summer Reading Challenge, delivered in partnership with The Reading Agency and public libraries across the UK, is back for 2025! This year’s Challenge, Story Garden – Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors, will inspire children to tap into a world of imagination through reading, exploring the magical connection between storytelling and nature, launching in England on Saturday 5th July. This year’s Summer Reading Challenge features artwork from award-winning illustrator Dapo Adeola, whose stunning illustrations will bring the Story Garden theme to life; creating an enchanting world where children can find magical creatures, plants and flowers to inspire their next reading adventure.

The Summer Reading Challenge is aimed at children from 4-11 years old. It supports this age group and their families by:

n Boosting children’s confidence and self-esteem by supporting independent reading.

n Preparing children to get back to the classroom in the autumn.

n Supporting the move into a new year group or key stage.

Explore nature at Iver Environment Centre this summer

Iver Environment Centre is located in the Colne Valley between Uxbridge and Slough and enables children and families to immerse themselves in nature as they explore the site. Discover what’s growing in the allotments, see what’s flying over the ponds and explore different habitats before playing in the natural play area. ‘Kids Only’ activities for children and young people aged seven upwards encourage independence as they enjoy bushcraft and forest school style activities with Iver’s specially trained team. Kids play free at Småland

IKEA like to make visiting both fun for kids and easier for grown-ups!

Småland is the FREE supervised play area. If your child is aged 3-10 years old (up to the child’s 11th Birthday), you can sign in your child for a session at Småland located at the entrance of the store. IKEA Småland co-workers will take care of your children for 60 minutes while you enjoy shopping in store. Perfect for the summer holidays when you have the children at home with you! Family fun for £2 at your local leisure centres this summer

Want to keep children active, entertained and off screens during the holidays? This summer, a local campaign aims to make that a little easier. The Everyone is Family campaign, run by award-winning leisure operator Everyone Active, is returning with a wide range of family-friendly activities – all for just £2 per person. Running from Saturday 19th July to Wednesday 3rd September, the campaign will offer something for all ages – from swimming and badminton to table tennis and Active Antz – with activities varying by centre. The aim is to give families more opportunities to spend quality time together, without the barrier of high costs.

“School holidays can be a challenging time for parents, especially when budgets are tight,” said Simon Morgan, Everyone Active’s area contract manager. “We want to provide a welcoming and affordable space where families from local communities can be active, have fun and make memories together.”

Norden Farm presents The Kite Festival

SUNDAY 31ST AUGUST

The annual Kite Festival is at Maidenhead’s Boyn Grove Park (Punt Hill) on Sunday 31st August. Round off the summer holidays at this FREE event, from 12noon until 4pm! Take your kite creations, pre-loved or shop bought kites to this celebration of families and community spirit. In the lead up to the festival, you can create your own kites in a series of workshops held at Norden Farm and in Maidenhead town centre. Norden Farm workshops are led by Community Kite Project, who have been running kite events for over ten years. If time is short, join a drop-in workshop at the Nicholsons Shopping Centre where you can create a kite in under half an hour. On the day, as well as all the kite flying fun, there’s local food stalls, live music, entertainment and a bar. Celebrating its 21st anniversary, ABC to read is the only award-winning charity in Berkshire set up to help children gain confidence in reading and it is their mission to attract more volunteers and work with even more schools this year. They aim to provide trained, vetted and supported reading mentors across Berkshire schools to work with children who are struggling with their reading. In recent surveys, 98% of children improved in reading performance, 97% improved their attitude to read, and 100% of children’s overall achievement was raised. ABC to read have transformed children’s lives since 2004. The volunteers include teachers and a variety of people from the community who help with their time and expertise. ABC to read supports over 500 Berkshire children each week with comprehensive, quality 1-1 support. The volunteers come to school twice a week and spend half an hour with each child, playing word games, reading and boosting their confidence and skills. The charity also delivers workshops to parents, 6th form students and to older students with the aim to support children and younger peers for whom reading is a challenge.
