WELCOME to our ADVENTURES “THERE IS A PERIOD NEAR THE BEGINNING OF EVERY MAN’S LIFE WHEN HE HAS LITTLE TO CLING TO EXCEPT HIS UNMANAGEABLE DREAM, LITTLE TO SUPPORT HIM EXCEPT GOOD HEALTH, AND NOWHERE TO GO BUT ALL OVER THE PLACE.” — E.B. WHITE

And so it goes with Moondance. We create unforgettable journeys for teens to some of the world’s most extraordinary places. I often describe how we begin each summer by throwing a pebble in a pond and everyone scatters around the globe. As we enter our third decade of running trips around the world, we are not standing still. We’re excited to offer two new trips in 2016 to Bali and Iceland. Our goal will continue to be the finest adventure travel program for young adults. We are not the biggest, but our passion to create life changing experiences will never waver. So if you are an adventurous soul, flip through these pages and dream of where you want to go. We hope you will join us for a trip of a lifetime.

BACKGROUND and PHILOSOPHY Oliver Wendell Holmes once wrote

“A MIND THAT IS STRETCHED BY A NEW EXPERIENCE CAN NEVER GO BACK TO ITS OLD DIMENSIONS.”

It is our goal and passion at Moondance to provide these kind of experiences. The kind that expand the mind, the heart and the soul. The kind that encourage curiosity and the type that unleash the strength and spirit of the self. We provide adventures where students are challenged to leave their comfort zones and, outside of their day to day lives, gain a deeper understanding of who they are. We believe that the wild outdoors is the ideal setting for reminding us of who we are as leaders, team members, friends and human beings. We go places where distractions are limited to night skies, sunsets, new friends, good conversation, mountain passes and fresh air. We show our students that they become better when they are working for something bigger than themselves. That teamwork and community are a cornerstone for living consciously and courageously. That they have more confidence, capabilities, joy capacity, and wonder inside of them than they ever thought possible. We are in the business of life changing, belly laughing, star gazing, foundation shifting good times. We know that life begins when you step outside your comfort zone, and whether that be climbing up a rock face, sleeping in a tent for the first time, or traveling to a new and exotic land, we’re here to show you how much you are capable of.

8

BACKGROUND AND PHILOSOPHY

what TO EXPECT A DAY IN THE LIFE

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY

Rise with the sun and dance with the moon! In between these two celestial realities your days will be packed. You could sleep under a full moon and California stars, summit a mountain peak or come face to face with a sea turtle. Regardless of the activities on your trip, you’ll eat your meals and traverse your days with your group and learn the meaning of a true expedition. There will be times for challenging yourself, relaxing in world famous surroundings, and sharpening your adventure travel skills. The days will fly by, and each one will be different, but you will create a home with your new family and that will be there every day. It is a proven fact that the tougher the climb, the better the view — thus we pack your days with the sweetest views, the most inspirational challenges, and the knowledge that every day is a gift.

You won’t know if you don’t go. But will you go if you don’t know? You’ll just have to trust us on this one. Snag those heavy hikers off the shelf, let them lose their new shoe scent, and fill them with a whiff of adventure. That’s a smell that won’t come out in the wash. This might be your first time, but first times are the best place to start. Anyone in good physical condition with a positive attitude and an open mind will find great success. It’s out here with the rushing rivers of the Rockies and the enchanting Maasai markets in Tanzania, the soul-refreshing rains of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the kelp-collecting tide pools in Hanalei Bay. So bring your sense of adventure and get ready for the trip of a lifetime!

STUDENT LEADERSHIP

Travel, eat, laugh, climb, swim, jump, grow. Do what you love and love what you do. That’s how we do it, and we do it outside. Outside of the lines, outside of the doors and outside of your day to day life. Every day on a Moondance trip is brimming with new experiences, new friends, new vistas and new activities. You can’t step in the same river twice, and no two Moondance trips are alike. Depending on the one you choose your activities will differ greatly - however each trip will provide you with a team to conquer your adventures with and the opportunity to do more than you ever imagined possible. You will grow, as a person, as a team member and a skilled traveler. These life lessons will be in your tool belt forever. Bring your open mind, some good shoes, and a thirst for adventure.

The daily happenings throughout a Moondance adventure successfully occur because you are there. These become your trips, the problems solved by you. Nonetheless, as mentors and teachers, we are always close by with the support you need to stay afloat in any scenario. Through teachable moments and careful consideration, we help you become a leader yourself. And we know just how to provide you with the opportunity to learn. It happens out here, not in a classroom. Pick a trip and see what we mean. While there are inherent risks in wilderness and foreign travel, our leaders monitor the groups closely. Then, as individuals hone and sharpen their skills, student leadership opportunities become reality. We hand you the reins and you steer the chariot with your teammates in tow.

the MOONDANCE DIFFERENCE WHEN DECIDING ON A SUMMER PROGRAM, THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPANIES FROM WHICH TO CHOOSE...

WHAT MAKES MOONDANCE UNIQUE? When we say we are in the business of changing lives, we mean just that. Here at Moondance, we strive to bring you not just an amazing adventure and not just a chance to develop outdoor and traveling skills; although those things are large pieces of our programs, we want to go deeper. We want to help you find your own comfort within the world and to instill the sense of confidence that comes from realizing you have the power to create your own reality. It is our wish that the personal growth you experience on a Moondance trip carries over into the core values of your everyday life.

10

MOONDANCE DIFFERENCE

LEADERS

The ability to choose is one of our most powerful tools in the box. With great power comes great responsibility, and we take this seriously. Never more so then when we choose our incredible staff. We know that the leaders of your trip are the most important part of ensuring that you are safe, satisfied and psyched with your adventure. We carefully select from a large pool of applicants each year, and comb the globe searching for the most competent, enthusiastic and dynamic leaders. Then we get to know each one extremely well at staff training, and soon we can’t imagine our lives without them. Leaders are chosen for their expertise in wilderness travel, passion for working with teenagers and a propensity for positivity. We love our leaders, and we know you will too. ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES

“I acclimated to a world that only seemed to fulfill my basic necessities, but in actuality, fulfilled my necessities as a human being, an individual without the distractions of everyday life in ways I could not imagine.” MOLLY BRICE, 17 CHARLOTTE, NC

Our adventure curriculum differs throughout each of our trips —but there are two consistencies throughout each journey we emphasize: fun and safety. Whether you are rock climbing or beachcombing, we frame each activity with a lens of security that allows you to see what you’re made of without fear. You can push those boundaries and know you are in good hands with our staff that has been trained in top notch safety standards. Our technical activities are outfitted by professional guides to give us the utmost security in our adventure endeavors. DIVERSE PROGRAMS

From the deserts of Morocco to the golden coasts of California, Moondance has you covered. We know that everyone has a different adventure craving, so we’ve spiced up the menu to satisfy every palette. Although each trip contains core Moondance values, they differ greatly in location, activities and challenge. Adventure comes in many shapes. Some are mountain shaped, others river shaped, some come in the shape of international travel and service. When adventure calls, we answer! Pick up the phone and say hello to something that moves your soul. We’ve crafted such a diverse and flavored menu of trips, there’s something for everyone who feels the pull of the Moondance. EXPEDITION behavior Expedition Behavior (EB) is one of our favorite things to instill on a Moondance trip. Simply put—be good to each other, and the good will spread. Once this goodness has spread, it will multiply and get into everything. It will occupy every nook and cranny of your backpack. It will crawl into the conversations you have on the trail. It will definitely show up in your dinner bowl. It reminds us that when we are on an expedition we are part of something bigger than ourselves. Teamwork makes the dream work so they, and we, say. Thus, being good to your teammates means being good to yourself, and that’s the kind of goodness that keeps getting better.

12

EXPEDITION BEHAVIOR

WHO ARE MOONDANCERS? Every season we are delighted, jaw-dangled, and awestruck at the gemstone students that join us. Folks of the positive, open-minded, belly-laughter loving variety arrive every time. We love them, they love each other, and we all love a good quest. We first get to know each of our students through their individual applications and teacher recommendations. Then they come get to know us, and we all get to know what it means to build great group dynamics.

SMALL GROUPS

Don’t get lost in the sauce, be a major ingredient. We carefully craft groups to be no larger than 13 students, with at least 2 adult leaders. Keeping it small allows the group to become larger than life! Like an LED, every bulb has a chance to shine and bring out the best in their fellow Moon Family members. This close-knit group dynamic allows the best opportunity for growth and for you to get the most out of your experience. MOONDANCEADVENTURES.COM

MOONDANCE Our leaders are the heart, soul, hands and feet of our entire operation. They hold the reins to make each and every trip that Moondance offers run smoothly, safely, and marvelously. Their personalities and skill sets are as varied as our programs, but they are all highly motivated and skilled leaders, facilitators, teachers, mentors, role models, friends, and catalysts for inspiration. Every year we are amazed at the assortment of humans that come together with the collective goal of creating unforgettable life experiences for young people. Our staff is very carefully selected from a large pool of applicants throughout the year. We see hundreds of young adults with incredible resumes come through our office, and we choose the very best for each summer, many of them returning staff. They are skilled outdoors men and women, many of them NOLS or Outward Bound graduates. Many have travel resumes that seem to exceed their age in years. They are climbers, musicians, athletes, outdoor educators, teachers, adventurers and coaches. They come to us with their most positive, enthusiastic, energetic and shining versions of themselves, and we love them.

14

Because we don’t strive to be the biggest company, we have the unique opportunity to really get to know each and every person we send out in the field. Each summer we hold MOONDANCE LEADERS

V LEADERS

an 11-day staff training that is mandatory for each leader. We streamline the outdoor skills that each leader already possesses, and everyone is trained extensively on their specific trip and their students. Safety is the cornerstone of all our training, and our leaders are well versed in it. Prior to arrival at staff training, each Moondance leader completes an intensive wilderness medical training program, obtaining either a WFR (Wilderness First Responder) or WFA (Wilderness First Aid) certification. All leaders are at least 21 years of age with the average age being 25. All of them have completed, or are in the process of completing, an undergraduate degree, and many are pursuing advanced degrees. At staff training we facilitate discussions and awareness about different leadership styles and skills. We play games, we share stories and we get unbelievably excited for the summer. We walk away from staff training completely stunned at the bond created as a staff and the caliber of individuals we send into the field. These are people we admire, respect and learn from every year. They continue to amaze us with their authenticity, their passion for life, their adoration for outdoor adventure and most importantly their desire to pass that passion onto the next generation of young folks. We are proud to have them holding the reins of this stellar stallion.

HAYES ABOUT THE FOUNDER

Hayes founded Moondance in 1996 as a way to share outdoor adventures with young people. He has been working and designing programs for teenagers for over 40 years. He began his love for the outdoors at Camp Deerhorn in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, a camp founded by his grandfather in 1930. A graduate of Charlotte Country Day School and the University of Alabama, Hayes served The Lovett School in Atlanta for twelve years as the Dean of Students and the Director of Summer Programs. He has participated in programs with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), the North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS) and the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC). Hayes tries to visit as many domestic trips each summer as time allows and has made multiple ascents on Mt. Rainier and the Grand Teton with Moondance groups. Hayes’ wife, Michael, is a native of Nashville, TN and graduate of Harpeth Hall and Sewanee: The University of the South. Michael spends her quality time raising their daughter, Hunter. Hunter is eagerly awaiting her first Moondance trip in 2018. They live in Asheville, NC where they coordinate all Moondance adventures. MOONDANCEADVENTURES.COM

LIVE in the MOMENT

“I learned that when I am myself, I can do anything and be really happy with the things I’ve done and the friends I’ve made.” KATIE BRODSKY, 14 DALLAS, TX

Life is full of moments — bright punctuations to the story you are weaving. Time flies, that’s just how it moves, and its full of things to distract you from the current time. Where are you going, where have you been— how about where are you NOW?! We are here to help you realize that the best moments are captured when you fully immerse yourself in them. When you live in the moment, you forget about that fast feathered clock and can be present within the adventure. Moondance moments will provide you with the simplest and most wonderful truths. The skies are blue, the mountains are beautiful, your friends are hilarious and you are capable of harnessing your time into what you want it to be. We will take you from the doldrums of devices, and free you from the daily tangle. Time flies fast, but life has lots of it. Learn to fill yours with moments that are well lived.

18

LIVE IN THE MOMENT

MOONUP One of the most memorable parts of a Moondance trip is the time spent circling up with your group for a little thing we call Moonup. This nightly ritual is responsible for blasting the Moondance experience into orbit. It happens on every trip. Whether our celestial companion is waxing or waning, rising or shining, the day isn’t done until the moon rises. A staple of our curriculum and an enduring favorite, Moonup is a chance for you and your group to grow, laugh and reflect in ways creative and indescribable. “I learned that life is less about what you have or what you do, but more about who you’re with.” SAM HANSER, 14, ST. LOUIS, MO

SAFETY WITHOUT QUESTION, SAFETY IS THE FOREMOST CONCERN FOR ANY FAMILY LOOKING INTO A WILDERNESS OR CULTURAL IMMERSION PROGRAM AND IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE ON ANY MOONDANCE TRIP.

We take enormous pride in our excellent safety record and work hard to provide a quality experience for our students. Our reputation is a direct reflection of our well-designed courses, detailed protocol for conducting safe activities and our low student-to-staff ratio. We monitor and evaluate risks for each trip and make managing these risks a year round responsibility. We use only the finest outfitters and guide services for technical activities such as rock climbing, mountaineering, and whitewater rafting. Our leaders are integral to the safety of each trip. Prior to the start of our programs, our trip leaders participate in an intensive 11-day training where safety policies and procedures are emphasized. All of our leaders have their Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certifications. Every leader-team has an extensive first aid kit and is familiar with the emergency support systems in the areas we travel. We must learn to manage risks daily while living in the wildeness. Safety is not something that Moondance, or any program, can guarantee. Participating in outdoor adventure activities involves inherent risks and dangers that can lead to injury, property damage or even loss of life. Almost any activity can be potentially dangerous. These risks cannot be predicted and can include forces of nature and the possibility of accidents. We discuss how to respect and evaluate risks throughout each trip. We want to teach each participant that responsible behavior, good judgment, and a concern for group safety are the most valuable assets in the outdoors.

After 6 and a half hours of trekking up snow and rock, every single person on our trip summited Mt. Shasta at 14,179 feet! Amidst the emerald ferns, towering rock castles, and world famous rainforests of Olympic National Park, we will train and tone you for the greatest of alpine feats, the mighty Mt. Rainier. At 14,410 feet, it looms as a metaphor and a living volcanic magistrate—waiting for you to surmount, with all your newfound outdoor skills, friendships, and confidence. If you want to know who you are, action is the best informer. And on the mountain, you’ll be amazed at the people you meet out there, yourself included.

of mountaineering C Sink your ice axe into the snowfields of Paradise at the foot of

Mt. Rainier during snow school taught by the legendary guides at Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. (RMI) C Sunrise summit bid the mighty 14,410 foot Mt. Rainier

NOTES FROM THE FIELD It’s tough summing up such a magical experience through words. The grandeur of Rainier and the thrill that comes with all the challenges and technicalities of the sport of mountaineering are indescribable. As the snow storm cleared and we glimpsed down the Tatoosh Range below Rainier yesterday, we all had a very special moment. Knowing we had not conquered, but instead joined together to creep up the sleeping dragon that magnificent Rainier is, we were moved beyond mountains to understand we’re capable of so much.

After a winding, wild ride down the mighty Pacuare River, we all made it safely to our riverside lodge in the jungle. Once at our destination for the afternoon, we embarked on a short hike to a breathtaking waterfall. After our hike we all played games on the deck overlooking the river and dozed in hammocks. What a day!

NOTES FROM THE FIELD We awoke to the sound of the Apurimac water rushing, calling to us for a long day of rafting, cliff jumping, and swimming. Camp was deconstructed and we fueled up on freshly purified water, yogurt, cereal, and fruit. The sun quickly rose above the canyon walls to provide us with warmth against the chilled river water splashing at each rapid. We paddled through Tres Maria’s, Purgatory, Indiana Jones, and The Minefield — adrenaline pumping fiercely within us all.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD Almost immediately after submerging into the clear blue water a sea lion shot, torpedo-like, into our midst and proceeded to playfully circle around us. Interacting with these puckish creatures has been one of the most memorable parts of the trip and never seems to get old. We even got to witness, from both above and below the surface, the occasional pelican or blue-footed booby dive bomb out of the sky after fish and crabs.

Group Placement One of the true benefits of an adventure experience is meeting and living with other highly motivated and group-oriented students from around the country. The bonds that form over a short period of time cannot be easily duplicated. Each expedition group is usually no larger than thirteen students. On certain trips, we will have multiple groups and it is important to divide students by age to create compatible groups. We allow no more than two friends together in the same group and limit the number of students in each group according to city or school. We also require new students to provide a teacher reference. Moondance reserves the right to make the final decision on all groupings. Additionally, while we strive for co-ed groups, Moondance does not guarantee co-ed expeditions. There are always at least two qualified leaders (one male, one female) with each group. Our Office If you need help with anything, we encourage you to call our office; we will gladly help you with any questions or concerns you may have. Moondance strives to provide the best personalized communication to all of our families. From your first contact with the office until you are back home after your trip, we aim to take care of you. Feel free to give us a call to discuss which trip would be appropriate for you and how best to get prepared. Please call 800.832.5229, or e-mail us: info@moondanceadventures.com. Special Use Permits Moondance operates under special use permits granted by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service, USDA. We would like to acknowledge the following areas for welcoming Moondance Adventures: Pisgah, Talkeetna, Nantahala, Gunnison, San Juan, and Shasta-Trinity National Forests. In addition, Moondance operates under commercial use and concessionaire’s licenses in the Olympic, North Cascades, Mount Rainier, Yosemite, Great Sand Dunes, Hawaii Volcanoes and Grand Teton National Parks.

DEAR HAYES AND THE MOONDANCE CREW, Both of our teenage boys have been fortunate to have had many exciting experiences in their lives, but their two trips on Moondance might very well be peak experiences. The friendships, the adventures, the love for the outdoors are, in our mind, the lasting legacy of their two trips. As parents, one of our greatest hopes is that our boys will have great role models in their lives. The leaders on their Moondance trips exceeded all of our expectations by far. The genuine care and concern each leader showed for our boys, their love and passion for the great outdoors, and the training and very purposeful way each leader worked with the diverse group of teenagers to forge a positive and open environment was, in our mind, amazing. I can’t think of any organization I would trust more than Moondance for a key step in this wild journey into adulthood for our kids. We’ll be eternally grateful to Hayes, the leaders, and the Moondance team for giving our boys two magical trips these last two summers and more to come in the future. There’s a lot of research about the benefits of a “mountain top experience” and Moondance is just this; an incredibly cherished, unique, energetic, experience for our kids. The friendships our boys made with the others in their group have been long lasting and meaningful—and wonderfully different than friendships at school. It truly is something special when all of these teenage strangers arrive together, unplug, and can leave behind their life at school and grow with the other kids who quickly become deep friends…all in the midst of God’s greatest scenery on the planet. We wish for our boys, positive and challenging experiences in life, and Moondance was just this. They came back confident, more open-minded, and more aware of how to successfully work and play with others, and they deepened their love for the outdoors. For this we are deeply appreciative. Thanks so much, Tim and Margaret Hanser PARENTS OF WARD AND SAM HANSER ST. LOUIS, MO
