Mayor Dan Sutton informed the council he has heard good things from residents regarding the utility improvement project that is in progress. The next public meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 28th at noon at the city office. Project updates can be found on the city’s website under the utility improvement project tab.
City Administrator Cohl Turnquist thanked the Boys and Girls Club for hosting the ground breaking ceremony for the Early Childhood Enrichment Center. As construction gets underway, a portion of the road by the school will be closed, but the parking lot will still be accessible. There will be a special council meeting on Tuesday, May 27th at 5:30 to present the ambulance model that Turnquist has been working on. The Airport Board will meet on Wednesday, May 28th at 5:30. Turnquist informed council that city staff became aware of an issue with the boiler system at the Aquatic Center. Staff are looking at repair options and Turnquist still expects the pool to be open on June 2nd.

New Business: Yancie Harris, representing the Flandreau Fridays Committee, presented information to the council about this year’s event, which will be held on Friday, June 20th beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the downtown area. The rain date will be Friday, June 27th. The group thanked the council for their continued support through yearly subsidies, which help to make Flandreau Fridays a successful event. Erin Hill, from the Boys and Girls Club, was present to share information with the council about the annual shed raffle. Tickets can be purchased for $30 from May 19th-June 20th, with the drawing expected to happen at the Flandreau Fridays event. The raffle is for a utility shed or $3,000 cash. Winner does not need to be present to win.
Shane Waterman, from IMEG Engineering, presented an update to the council on the utility improvement project. Construction crews have been working at the intersection of Park and Prairie and are expected to move to the Wind Street area next. Progress has been slowed down, due to the recent rain.
Motion by Yeaton and seconded by Fargen to approve the step increase for Jacob Pulscher, placing him on Step 2 of the Special Projects and Maintenance Technician wage scale at $25.71/hourly. A discussion was had on police staffing. Police Chief Zach Weber spoke to the benefits of having 6 officers, stating physical and mental health, along with scheduling as the top reasons for keeping 6 full-time officers. Alderman Fargen asked if 24-hour coverage is necessary and would like to see Chief Weber and Administrator Turnquist try and work with 5 officers. Discussion was also had on mutual aid with the county and tribal police departments. After much discussion, no council action was taken and the city will stay with the current staffing model of 6 full-time officers.
