Performs the following tasks in compliance with the 638 BIA Contract Program- BIA/AVT Higher Education and the Johnson O’Malley Program. Oversees the implementation and supervision of grant programs awarded to FSST Education under the authority of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe. Provides assistance in the development, planning, evaluation and coordination of activities related to community education and program development. Targets FSST enrolled youth and FSST members to recruit into higher education programs and universities, adult education programs, or other related assistance. May supervise temporary Summer Youth Coordinators when the Summer Youth Program is active. Minimum Qualifications: 1. Applicant must be currently certified through the state of South Dakota or Bureau of Indian Affairs. Applicants that have any felony convictions or felony deferred judgments will be disqualified from the process. Applicants with any misdemeanor convictions (non-traffic) or misdemeanor deferred judgments within the last 36 months will be disqualified from testing. No illegal drug usage within the last 36 months. Applicants who have used drugs within the last 36 months will be disqualified from testing. Education: you must have either a high school diploma or G.E.D. Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment and possess a valid Driver’s License. You must be a U.S. Citizen or eligible to work in the United States. You must complete P.L. 101-630 background check and any other background checks that may apply for this position.

We are excited to be offering some new programs this summer, along with some of the great programs we’ve offered in the past. Classes will be set up similar to last summer’s “minicamps”, so that kids can try something new each week. Don’t forget to look on the back, as we have LOTS of options this summer! Because the community supported our “Roses Just Because” Program to provide scholarship funds for Moody County High School graduates, we are now asking for candidates to apply for these funds. They MUST be at least half-way through their medical program. We are accepting applications for one-year programs but the scholarship will not be awarded until they reach midpoint of their program. Applicants are required to voluntarily disclose their grade-point average and provide a brief description of career goals.

Blood Drive to Help Supplies and Patients in Need Flandreau, SD- Avera Flandreau Hospital will host a community blood drives on Thursday, May 30 from 7:30 am to 11:00 am and 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm at Avera Flandreau Hospital. All blood donations will stay local to help save the lives of area patients in need.
Community Blood Bank supplies over 550 units of blood each week to people in the region. Among those who benefit from donated blood are trauma and burn victims, cancer patients and persons undergoing surgery. Donating blood is a simple way to save patients’ lives in the community. Without volunteer blood donors donating blood throughout the summer, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain an adequate supply of blood for Avera Flandreau Hospital. “Blood usage has been outpacing collection for the last few weeks, which has placed supplies at critical levels many times,” states Ken Versteeg, Executive Director, Community Blood Bank. “Looking forward, we are facing one of the most challenging seasons to maintain an adequate blood supply for the community. This is the opportunity to save the lives of local patients throughout the summer months. Please consider giving blood to support the only blood supplier for the Flandreau area.” Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form), weigh 110 lbs or more and be in good general health. Developing Small Patches of Strawberries The purpose of this article is to share some of my experiences of developing and maintaining a small patch of June bearing strawberries. This article will only address June bearing strawberries. When developing a new patch, choose an area that has a history of being free of grasses and weeds. Strawberries will grow in most area soils but will strive in sandy soil. I pick varieties from catalogs of northern nurseries that are in or near this hardiness zone. The catalogs will help you identify the variety of strawberry plants you desire: (ie: size, taste, vigor, wintering, and/or resistant to disease). Varieties come in early, mid, and late season production. If possible, plant equal amounts each, that will lengthen your picking season. The first year, you should not expect a crop. It takes one year to bring your plant population up to production levels. Plant the strawberry crowns with 24 inches spacing, in rows that are 36 inches or more apart. Plant as soon as frost is out of the ground and keep them moist. Consider picking blossoms off the plants the first year, which will force runners to start early. You will not renovate the first year. You will get your first harvest the second and additional years. The first berries to appear are called “king berries”. They are larger and easy to pick. Berries will get smaller as the season progresses, but the sweetness will be maintained. Frost can be a problem during the early blossom time and eliminate the king berries. A black center in the blossom is a sign of frost damage. The plants blossom over a number of weeks, so not all is lost. When the berry season is over, you must renovate the patch. Using a weed trimmer, cut down the berries to 1-3 inches high, leaving lower leaves. Do not damage the crowns. Use a tiller to put the plants into desired rows. Fertilize now, using a 10-10-10 or similar fertilizer (not lawn fertilizer) and continue weed control for the rest of the summer. During weeding, train you runners to stay in rows. Pay close attention to weed control, it is the secret for longevity of your patch. Aggressively remove any grasses. Grasses can quickly dominate and end the patch usefulness. Fertilize again in the fall. Make sure the plants are getting 1 inch of water per week all summer. Before really cold weather sets in, I cover the patch with a clean mulch. The mulch must be free of mold and weed seeds, that leaves you with few choices. Mulch protects the strawberry crowns from winter kill and gives some control over when you want the plants to come out of dormancy in the spring. As soon as the berries come out of dormancy, remove some of the mulch. Leave some mulch between the plants to hold back weeds and keep dirt off the berries when picking.
