City Attorney Paul Lewis also spoke highly of Officer Anderson-Pelton’s “over and above” performance in assisting the State’s Attorney Office.

Dave Ahlers provided information regarding his proposal to work toward county-wide law enforcement. Items discussed were: Police Department budget items, the number of law enforcement officers needed, crime control statistics and how they compare to surrounding cities, contracting county-wide law enforcement, the need for a jail in Moody County, and the feasibility of doing a study regarding county-wide law enforcement.

Acting Chief Weber, FPD, informed Council that Officer Joachims continues his training at the academy. Previous problems with the City-owned dog pound have been resolved.

He is investigating a School Resource Officer (SRO) Grant and may visit with the Flandreau Public School to share costs for a SRO. He also shared the possibility of utilizing the police dog as a “dual purpose dog”; in addition to the narcotics training, the dog would be trained for patrol and would assist in tracking and apprehension.

Chief Krull, FVFD, informed Council that three City firefighters are assisting with wildfires in the western part of SD and that twelve more are working on wildland certification. Due to funds received from firefighting and calendar sales, he anticipates that the FVFD will be able to complete the necessary repairs needed on their brush truck, enabling the department to have two grass rigs.

Mayor Bonrud indicated the next Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 19th as there will be a Disaster Training Exercise at the City Airport on the previously scheduled date of Monday, April 18th. Helms and Associates will complete the final inspection on the SRE building next week. The Mayor will also meet with Helms & Associates, City Administrator Whitman, and an interested party who has inquired about building a new hangar at the airport.

City Administrator Whitman informed Council that County Commissioner Doyle has discontinued the pursuit of an Ambulance District due to timing and the fact that the City of Egan did not approve the Resolution indicating support of the creation of the district. The City Administrator recently met with Clark Engineering and Akamu Barboza to begin working on the Phase One Water/Wastewater Project, including replacing the waterline to the Flandreau Indian School. The goal is to place a bid notice in the paper in the next few weeks as it is crucial to award the bid and begin work as soon as possible to avoid weather related issues late in the project.
