Open Aquatic Center Positions

The City of Flandreau is accepting applications for the positions of Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor, and Clerk for the 2023 Aquatic Center season. Applicants for the Clerk position must be at least 14 years old. For the Lifeguard position, qualified applicants must be at least 16 years old and must be able to obtain CPR, First Aid, and lifeguard certifications. PUBLIC NOTICE

In accordance with Title 5

Public and Private Nuisances:

Property owners must remove noxious weeds an unhealthful vegetation from the property within a reasonable time after the growth of the vegetation on any property within the City of Flandreau. (Chapter 5.3)

Notice is hereby given to property owners whose property within said City on which the height of the grass and/or weeds has exceeded the height of six (6) inches and that any grass or weeds that exceed said height shall be removed within forty-eight hours. The notice need not be given personally but may be given generally through the official newspaper annually. The published notice shall constitute notice as require by this Section. (Chapter 5.4)

If the owner or person in possession of property fails to abate the nuisance within the time specified, the City may take remedial action to abate the nuisance and to charge the cost thereof against the abated property. A separate charge will be incurred each time this action is initiated. (Chapter 5.4)

Exception. Property owners with parcels of land that exceed one (1) acre in size may petition the City Council for relief from the requirements of this Chapter. The Council may approve or disapprove the petition and establish other criteria that must be complied with. If the exception is approved, minimum upkeep standards shall require 1) the property, including boulevards, must be mowed at least twice a year, and 2) the control of noxious weeds (Chapter 5.4)

Valley FiberCom Announces Flandreau, Colman, & Egan Town Fiber Projects

Valley Communications Inc., doing business as Valley FiberCom, has formally announced plans to bring ultra high -speed fiber-based Internet access and telephone service to homes and businesses within the towns of Flandreau, Colman, and Egan.

Over the last several years, Valley FiberCom has established a fiber footprint in the rural areas of Flandreau, Colman, and E gan. To complete this project, Valley FiberCom has made use of $15 million in Federal USDA Rural Development Grants and $9.5 million in state grants to provide FTTH (Fiber-To-The-Home) services to the underserved areas of Moody, Kingsbury, Brookings, and some eastern parts of Beadle counties. With the addition of the above mentioned towns, this will cap off a 5 year investment by Valley FiberCom of over $23 million

The FTTH placed by Valley FiberCom is one of the most sought-after broadband technologies in the country. “What once was used to connect continents together for communications, we now connect directly to your homes and businesses. This Fiber to the Home (FTTH) network increases home values and at the same time futureproofs your communications requirements.” added Valley FiberCom CEO/GM Jeff Symens.

Fiber optic cable has the ability to carry large amounts of data and allows Valley FiberCom to stay on the cutting edge as technology evolves. Optical fiber is faster than DSL, cable, and wireless Internet. Fiber that is installed all t he way to your home eliminates data bottlenecks because it is a dedicated connection that is not shared with your neighbors. Valley FiberCom currently offers several packages with speeds up to a Gigabit

Valley FiberCom’s local office in Flandreau, located at 120 E Pipestone Ave, opened in 2021. “Valley FiberCom customers will continue to receive access to local customer service and timely service calls,” said Symens.

“If all goes according to plan, Valley FiberCom hopes to begin fiber plant construction as soon as the weather permits, and we expect to connect customers as soon as the fiber routes are in place and tested,” said Symens.

Symens also noted that customers currently served by other providers in the Flandreau, Colman, and Egan areas may want to exercise caution in taking advantage of special pricing or contracts which may prevent immediate service connections when Valley FiberCom is read y to provide service. “We would hate for someone to miss out on the launch of our new services because they are tied to a previous provider’s agreement with inflated rates and hefty cancellation penalties.”

Symens also added, “We look forward to becoming a partner in Flandreau, Colman, and Egan communities that is committed to providing reliable and excellent services at an affordable price.”

Summary: The Flandreau Santee Sioux Housing department is seeking a dependable individual who can clean all units (houses and apartments) prior to occupancy. Incumbent is responsible for ensuring all units are clean and sanitary prior to move in inspections with tenants in accordance with the FSSHD Maintenance Policies. The incumbent will also do grounds keeping duties when necessary. Incumbent will work 20 – 30 hours a week. Incumbent will update the Lead Maintenance Technician and Housing Director of any and all maintenance issues within the Housing Department.
