This is my last home game as head coach of Montpelier Villa and subsequently my last programme notes However I doubt this is the last you'll hear from me The team are in safe hands with Tony and Bruno who have the skills and experience to take this team to the next level. For those that don't know I'm going to become a father early next year and our team now I have always prioritised them and even used my wedding speech to deliver a team-talk but the time has come to put something else first
Of course it isn't that long ago we didn't have a regular programme which is one measure of how far we have come as a team
Another measure is today's opponents who have given us some memorable moments since they first appeared on the scene in 2020 We were the first side to beat them in December 2020 and set up a final day showdown where ultimately we lost but considering the significant gap in our respective resources we were proud to have given our best shot regardless of the outcome It has been a constant theme of my time here that we always surpass even what we think we're capable of
In my first season with MVWFC, there were nine teams in the league and now only four of those remain Of course there are more women's football clubs and there is a thriving league in Sussex but five of those teams no longer exist. Another measure of our success is being consistent in the volatile world of grassroots football
It's difficult to shout about our achievements and I would never claim any responsibility for our success but when I first met Charlotte over five years ago the bar was incredibly low. I'm pleased at the very least I've contributed to raising the bar I was fortunate to inherit an extremely talented squad and all I had to do was show up every week
It's going to be really strange when I no longer have to do that.

Hi Ruby, You’re one of our most experienced players, how did your first game go and what's happened since?
I played as a striker for my first season with Villa and scored 6 goals on my debut Unfortunately, this didn’t become a regular occurrence and I moved further and further back until finding myself at CDM, where I play now. I still score the (very) occasional goal but gone are the glory days of the double hattrick
What’s been your favourite memory in a Villa shirt?
I think winning the Sussex League cup a few years ago was a real highlight - we worked really hard all season and were unlucky not to win the league, so getting some silverware (and scoring a goal!) was definitely a highlight Other highlights definitely include our game against the Brighton academy - I was out injured but even being on the sidelines was a proud moment, especially as a seagulls fan.
What professional teams and players inspire you? Including in the women’s game?
Like I said, I’m a big Brighton fan and I think the progress we ’ ve made over the last few years has been amazing to watch. No matter who we ’ re playing against, we keep the same style of football and give even the biggest teams a good game - not dissimilar from the way we play at Villa In the women ’ s gamesshoutout to the England squad that won the euros I cried at the end of that match and felt incredibly proud to be a footballer For individual players, I think Kiera Walsh is a great player - technical and understated
What do you think the team can achieve this season?
I think we ’ ve improved a lot over the last year and hopefully we can show that on the pitch!
I think we could finish top 3
If you were an animal, what would you be?
A fox!
