Division 1 18/08/2023 15:00KO Montpelier Villa AFC Men's vs Selsey FC
It's been a positive start for the men's side and the squad are responding well to how we want them to play.
Last year at times we had to sacrifice the 'villa way' as we rebuilt the playing squad but it's nice to get back to our roots which has brought us so much success over the years
Selsey are a well coached side who want to play football the right way so it's a game I have been excited about and hope both sides can put on a great show for the fans
We have some big ambitions for the club and this season but it's a long season so we have to remain focused and not get ahead of ourselves
Consistency is key and it's no good starting the season well and the dropping off. With the added experience this season I am sure it will give us what we need to remain competitive throughout the season

The start of the season is the most exciting day of the year because up until that first whistle blows everyone will think they have a shot at glory and we ’ re no different
Our pre-season has us in good stead but very little can prepare you for the onslaught of weekly (and additionally midweek matches) we are about to face between here and May
We faced four Sussex sides in pre-season: Hollingbury Hawks, Selsey, Worthing and Saltdean All of these teams play in different leagues to us so we can genuinely wish them the best of luck for the season. We’re very pleased to have good working relationships with all of these teams and hope that that is something that can be developed
It has been a real pleasure to witness the development and growth of our mens side in the opening three games and we ’ re pleased to see the results on the pitch are starting to reflect the work that goes on off it
It would be remiss of me not to mention our season kicks off as another tournament in Australia concludes and we must thank Welling United in advance for their hospitality who are offering a free bacon roll to anyone who is through the door before 11am We may find out which Villa fans are willing to travel the furthest for a free breakfast
SKIP KELLY WOMEN'S MANAGERI'm Rob assistant manager of the men's team and I was first brought to Montpelier by Dave as u23s manager last season. My role was to develop players to progress into the first team squad which I think I did well at the end of the season alot of 23s who started with me were playing regularly in first team week in week out by the end of the season. We had our ups and down in 23s but was positive season with some great results in league and Cup.
Towards end of season Sammy left leaving Dave without an assistant and I was asked to step in which I was happy to and we went on a great run, as we managed to escape relegation with one game to go.
At the end of season dave approached me offering me the role full time which I jumped at. During preseason we worked at improving the squad which we certainly have which shows in our early season results .
Before villa I was close to walking away from football but now safe to say now I got club and manager that trust me I found my love for it again and only want to improve as an individual and as a team.
few words from our assistant;
Selsey Football Club was formed in 1903 and played at various grounds before setting up home at the High Street Ground in the late 1940s. Selsey were a formidable force in the West Sussex Football League and dominated the league in the 1950s. Their record in the West Sussex Football League before applying for promotion to the Sussex County Football League was the envy of many around. They won Division One on six occasions in 1937/38, 1954/55, 1956/57, 1957/58, 1958/59 and 1960/61, together with the Malcolm Simmonds Memorial Cup on four occasions in 1955/56, 1956/57, 1957/58 and 1958/59. They also added the Sussex County FA Intermediate Cup trophy to their haul in 1958/59.
Selsey made the step up to the Sussex County League in 1961 and made an immediate impact on Division Two, when finishing runners-up to champions Shoreham in their first season. Selsey gained promotion to Division One in 1963/64, ending the season as champions and were also winners of the Division Two Invitation Cup. The club remained in the top division for five years before being relegated in 1969. The highlight of their early existence in the County scene was when they appeared at the Goldstone Ground, Brighton and were narrowly beaten by Eastbourne Utd 1-0 in the Sussex Senior Cup in season 1962/63.
Afternoon everyone Paul here villa 23’s manager, when I 1st heard that the u23’s job was available I knew straight away I had to go for it, this is a club on the up doing things the right way the villa way.
After meeting Dave & hearing the project he had in place & had started it sealed it for me.
Pre-season started very well amazing numbers at training everyone pushed there selfs & that is now showing in the matches we have played, for a new side we have had a hard preseason playing some very good sides which has brought the best out of the players, winning 3 & losing 2 myself & Russell couldn’t be more happy with the group we have & to be part of this great club.
Thursday night we travelled to storrington for are 1st competitive game in which we came away 1-0 winners good team display from the whole squad with the subs having a big impact in the game, we now look forward to next Friday at home to shoreham.
Lastly I would like to thank Dave & the club for giving myself & Russell the opportunity at villa thanks everyone. #UTV
