Apparently they are never happier than when standing in the fast-flowing river Severn near Black Rock, trying to catch salmon with handmade willow lave nets. In a good year they catch two each. They’re not a tourist attraction, though people come and watch.

Rooted in reality

Owen Sheers Llanthony Priory, an inspirational place

We caught up with poet and author Owen Sheers in one of his favourite walking spots.

‘Their generosity is humbling,’ says Owen Sheers, of the many people from the Abergavenny area who’ve contributed to the making of his first film, Resistance. ‘We had offers of horses, vintage cars, farmhouses and fields.’

Shot on location in the Black Mountains last autumn, and starring Andrea Riseborough, Tom Wlaschiha and Michael Sheen, Resistance is based on Owen’s debut novel of the same name. Due for release later this year, the film tells the story of an isolated Welsh farming community’s struggle as the Second World War runs an alternative course. One night in September 1944, the local men disappear.

Soon after, a German patrol arrives to find the farmers’ wives alone.

In the ensuing harsh winter, both sides acknowledge they have to rely on the other.

Amazingly, this storyline is totally plausible. It all started when Owen heard about a man in his home village of Llanddewi Rhydderch, who was part of the Monmouthshire Auxiliary Units.

Through him, Owen became aware of a virtually unknown world of small, highly-organised groups of men masquerading as members of the Home Guard. ‘Local men - farmers, vicars, radio enthusiasts - were recruited to form patrols that would go to ground at the approach of the German army, and sabotage the enemy’s progress.

Right on my doorstep there are secret underground bunkers, holes in walls where messages were left and relatives who knew nothing of their loved ones’ involvement in this covert movement. How they managed to keep it secret is difficult to fathom,’ says Owen.

Both the plot of the novel, and its exquisite prose, stem out of the particular landscape of these Welsh borders; hills and valleys where, over the years, Owen has climbed trees, scaled heights and crafted poetry. So it was inevitable that the natural home for the film should be the very area depicted in the story – today part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Perfect, too, that little dressing was needed to capture the locations on film; so little has changed in this landscape over the centuries.

The steep-sided Llanthony valley in the Black Mountains has long appealed to those seeking inspiration or pilgrims on the eternal quest for peace. The Augustinians founded the magnificent Priory here in 1113 and Walter Savage Landor, poet and essayist, bought its ruins in the early 19th century. He aspired, rather unsuccessfully, to the life of a model country gentleman, improving the roads and planting hundreds of trees, still known locally as Landor’s Larches. Another charmed by the valley was Father Ignatius, who tried to restore monastic life to the Church of England in the late 19th century. Having failed to persuade Landor to part with Llanthony Priory, Ignatius built a monastery at Capel y Ffin, further along the valley. An annual pilgrimage from Llanthony Priory to Capel y Ffin takes place in August. It was at Capel y Ffin monastery that sculptor and typographer Eric Gill lived and worked in the 1920s, producing some of his most enduring works, including the typeface Gill Sans. His entourage at this self-sufficient commune included the painter-poet David Jones who, incidentally, gets a cameo role in Resistance. You’ll recognise Llanthony Priory and the adjacent church, St David’s, in the film; both sites, along with the distinctive valley itself, were used as locations for some crucial scenes.

All’s quiet again since the film crew left. The valley has returned to its regular rhythm of walking boots and horses’ hooves. Avoid bank holidays and you can go for hours without passing another soul. For seriously long walks with plenty of time for contemplation, try the Offa’s Dyke Path which follows the ridge on the eastern side of the valley or the Cistercian Way, a medieval pilgrimage route which passes along the valley floor.

In the 21st century the Llanthony valley remains a world apart.

The enduring landscape has an aura which is, at once, both towering and intimate, harsh and beautiful. Locals don’t want to lose it, visitors come to find it. To each of them, the valley offers solitude. Uncompromising to some. Heaven to others. visitwyevalley.com

Our home-grown masterpiece

Since his attention-grabbing debut collection of poetry, The Blue Book, Owen has been one to watch. He was hotly tipped by Poet Laureate Andrew Motion, named as a Next Generation Poet by the Poetry Book Society and has both his poetry and fiction studied on the GCSE and A level syllabuses. His works include The Dust Diaries (Welsh Book of the Year 2005), a non-fiction narrative set in Zimbabwe, a second collection of poetry Skirrid Hill (Somerset Maugham Award) and a novella White Ravens, his response to the myth of Branwen from the medieval Welsh Mabinogion. He recently wrote and presented the BBC4 series A Poet’s Guide to Britain and worked with Michael Sheen on his contemporary revival of the Passion Play to be performed in Sheen’s hometown of Port Talbot this Easter. His oratorio about climate change, The Water Diviner’s Tale, on which he collaborated with the composer Rachel Portman, will open the New York World Science Festival in June.

Back in the early 1960s after a critical BBC documentary about the area, entitled The Dying Valley, people living in the Llanthony valley organised a traditional country show to rally support for their way of life. It became an annual affair with spin-off events including Hedging & Stone Walling Competitions and Sheepdog Trials. Fifty years later, its continued success is due to the unrelenting commitment of volunteers from this close-knit farming community.

Just 24 months after opening, Shaun Hill’s Walnut Tree, near Abergavenny, gained a Michelin star, and was named Best Restaurant in Wales at the National Restaurant Awards last October. According to Jaspar Gerard of The Telegraph, the Walnut Tree offers ‘terrifically good food that’s punchy, rustic and refreshingly free of metropolitan twirls.’ It’s a very understated venue, led by a modest man but Shaun Hill’s credentials are impressive, not least his success at The Merchant House in Ludlow and Devon’s Gidleigh Park. ‘Our guests are from every walk of life; they simply enjoy good food. The art of picnicking Picnics aren’t for everyone, we know, but perhaps you should think again.

Forget crowded grassed areas where you share soggy sandwiches in the rain. With very little effort you can pick up excellent local produce, find a breathtaking view or something to occupy the younger members of your party, and discover that you might like picnics after all. Freediving Another activity that attracts growing interest is freediving – diving on a single breath without the assistance of any breathing apparatus. BBC Coast and natural history presenter, Miranda Krestovnikoff, came along to the National Diving and Activity Centre in Chepstow for a freediving lesson with World Champion Sara Campbell. Her experience here was aired on BBC’s The One Show last summer.

Sam Kirby, coach to the UK Freedive team and founder of SaltFree Divers, runs freediving courses at this scenic flooded quarry between April and October. She enjoys helping people experience that complete feeling of freedom underwater.

‘Freediving should never be attempted without formal training, and no-one should ever freedive alone, so the National Diving and Activity Centre is crucial to the development of this sport.

During a weekend here you’ll spend half a day in the classroom, half a day in the pool and, most importantly, a full day in the lake gaining new skills. Just about everyone who takes the course surprises themselves with what they achieve. You’ll leave with a real sense of accomplishment, having had a glimpse into a very different world,’ says Sam.

Out of this world

As the deepest inland dive site in the UK, the National Diving and Activity Centre hosts many competitions. In 2011 it’s the venue for the National Depth Freediving Championships, where the top freedivers compete for selection to the UK team. ndac.co.uk saltfreedivers.com

As well as the typical activities you’d expect to find in a rural setting, the Wye Valley & Vale of Usk is home to some remarkably unusual goings-on.

We talked to the passionate people behind a couple of these ventures.

Stargazing Dark sky tourism is just taking off in this country but some pundits believe that, for remote areas, the night sky could be as important as the landscape. In essence, it’s all about encouraging people to visit the best stargazing locations. And for that you need really dark skies.

Certain areas of Wales, including parts of the Brecon Beacons National Park, have some of the least light-polluted skies in Europe, and the UK has the highest percentage of amateur astronomers in Europe. So we’re sitting pretty for this new type of tourism.

Allan Trow, lecturer in astronomy at the University of Glamorgan and project manager of Dark Sky Wales, is very optimistic.

‘Our remotest spots already attract visitors by day; hopefully dark sky tourism will help encourage more visitors after dusk. The longest dark periods are obviously during the winter, after the clocks go back in October, so there’s particular scope to increase the level of tourism in this off-peak season.’

At its simplest, no equipment is needed for stargazing. Just dark, cloudless skies and the naked eye. Allan Trow offers the following advice, ‘To enjoy looking at the stars always wear warm clothes, and take a hot drink and a deckchair if possible. Drive to a safe parking place, like the top car park on the Sugar Loaf mountain near Abergavenny. Turn all the lights off and give your eyes 10-15 minutes to adjust to the darkness. Then look up and be amazed.

You’ll probably be able to see over 1,000 stars. With a planisphere or a basic star map (available free on the internet) for guidance you’ll even pick out our own galaxy, the Milky Way, stretching across the sky.’

If you’d rather attend an organised event, try a stargazing evening at the National Park Visitor Centre in Libanus, near Brecon. Why are there no pubs in Llanover?

In the mid-19th century Lady Llanover, a leading light of the temperance movement, closed all the inns on her estate, converting some into coffee houses. Somehow, the Goose and Cuckoo high on the mountain above Llanover (map ref: A5) managed to escape closure.

Community spirit Perhaps we are becoming a nation of stay-at-home drinkers who are more concerned about cost than conversation. Happy to pick up cheap alcohol at the supermarket and satisfied by home entertainment. The steady closure of around fifty pubs per week across the UK is proof enough that the outlook for this sector, and for rural pubs in particular, isn’t rosy. In the Wye Valley & Vale of Usk there is already a list of pubs that are no more; the area’s history fading slightly with the loss of each distinctive pub name. Many a failing country inn has been turned into a fantastic home but at what cost to its neighbours?

Thankfully, several of our villages are bucking the trend, with thriving pubs at the centre of their communities, led by licencees with vision, and supported by locals and visitors who want something distinctive.

The Lion Inn, Trellech (map ref: D5) has been at the heart of village life since 1580 but this ancient building has probably never before hosted such an eclectic range of events. It’s where the local crib and quiz teams are based, a place for the bell-ringers to meet, and where amateur musicians get together for informal ‘open mic’ sessions. At this, the Best Cask Ale Pub in Wales 2010, you’ll find a fine selection of real ales and ciders and a huge gathering of like-minded folk at the inn’s annual beer, cider and perry festivals.

Landlady Debbie Zsigo extols the virtues of the inn’s ‘exceptional cellar’ which helps her serve the perfect pint.

Never short of innovative ideas, Debbie has introduced a monthly haircut night, when you can get a ‘short back and sides’ in the corner of the bar. Her latest venture is takeaway pizzas – popular with guests in the many self-catering properties in and around Trellech. For these reasons, and more, the inn is noted in historian John Davies’ new book Wales: the 100 places to see before you die. lioninn.co.uk The Wye Valley and Vale of Usk’s historic buildings and stunning scenery captivate many visitors. Andy and Jackie Murphy were on the lookout for ‘a lovely place to live and a good business opportunity’. They believe they’ve found both in The Inn at Penallt (map ref: D5), a 17th century farmhouse which started serving ale in the 1800s. Since taking over in 2010, husband and wife have set out to create ‘a proper country inn that is part of the local fabric’. They purchase high quality food and drink from this region, employ local people and have revived some village events including Bonfire Night.

Andy’s keen for people to feel at home here, and a small group of locals helped to choose wines for the wine list. ‘Our regulars are not only crucial to our business by spending money here, they help create the atmosphere which visitors enjoy. From the outset we’ve actively encouraged customers’ comments; they’ve told us what works and what doesn’t, and they’ve led us to some amazing local food and drink suppliers,’ said Andy. It’s an unpretentious place to relax – young children get colouring books and a playground (opening at Easter), and dogs are very warmly welcomed. theinnatpenallt.co.uk You’ll have to look hard to find a greater sense of community than that in Grosmont (map ref: C3), where a group of local people put up the money to buy The Angel Inn, the village’s last remaining pub. Rob Barker is one of the directors (often seen playing his guitar in the pub) and his wife, Margie, manages the pub. ‘When it came up for sale lots of villagers were concerned that it might end up as a gastro-pub or a posh restaurant. We liked the character of our village pub as it was, and didn’t want it to change.’ CAMRA clearly like it too – it’s one of just seven community pubs included in their Good Beer Guide 2011.

This rather obvious course of action is just another example of how Grosmont’s strong community gets things done. They’ve secured grants totalling almost £¼million to restore their medieval church, developed a cooperative to rear their own pigs and created GADMAG (Grosmont And District Multi Activity Group) which organises regular events to ‘get the community together.’ Grosmont seems to have it made. With its 13th century castle, post-officecum-general store and picturesque main street, it’s small wonder that travel writer Jan Morris called it ‘the most beautiful village in Britain.’ Even more beautiful is its community spirit. grosmont.org Find more pubs at visitwyevalley.com visitwyevalley.com

Chepstow On the very edge of Wales, alongside the river Wye, Chepstow has one of the earliest stone built castles in Britain.

Named Striguil in Norman times (from a Welsh word meaning bend in the river), by the 14th century it had its current name – from the Old English ceap/chepe meaning market, and stowe meaning place. In Welsh it is called Cas-gwent, meaning castle of Gwent. (map ref: D6) chepstow.co.uk

Abergavenny Called Gobannium by the Romans and Y Fenni by Welsh speakers (after one of the brooks running through the town), this market town is the perfect base for the Brecon Beacons National Park, Blaenavon World Heritage Site and the world-famous Food Festival. Caerleon Already one of the best-known Roman sites in Britain, archaeologists were surprised last year to discover a complex of monumental buildings, including possibly the largest building in Roman Britain.

Caldicot Located near the coast between the two bridges over the river Severn, its name is probably derived from Old English calde meaning cold, then cot meaning cottage/shelter. (map ref: C7) caldicot.com Highlights • The castle, founded by the Normans and restored as a Victorian home. Set in 55 acres of wooded parkland, it has a packed events programme.

• A stone’s throw away is Caerwent, which was the largest civilian town in Wales during Roman times. Featured on Channel 4’s Time Team, it has some of the best preserved Roman remains in Europe.

• Dewstow Gardens with subterranean grottoes.

Monmouth Known as Tre Fynwy in Welsh, the name refers to the river Mynwy (or Monnow) which flows through the town before it joins the river Wye. Hence, the mouth of the Monnow. It’s a well-used name - from the Monmouth pudding to the Type 23 frigate HMS Monmouth.

In the Tudor period the town’s knitted-cap industry flourished and the Monmouth Cap, an essential item for soldiers and sailors, was produced right across England by the 17th century. Newport This once industrial port is now a vibrant 21st century city. Uncover its history at the Museum and follow the Chartist Trail to learn more about this turbulent period of history. Newport has an International Sports Village and is home to the Dragons rugby team and Newport County football team, which has performed well recently and is on the cusp of entering the Football League! • T redegar House. One of the best examples of a Charles II mansion in Britain, the site has been the ancestral home of the Morgan Family, later Lords Tredegar, for over 500 years.

Usk One of the oldest towns in Wales, the Romans called it Burrium. The English word comes from the Brythonic word Wysg, meaning water, while the Welsh name in current use, Brynbuga (important to note it is pronounced brin-beega!), can be traced back to medieval times. It gives its name to the Usk Fly which can still be bought at Sweet’s famous fishing tackle shop. And if you are a native of Usk or have lived here more than 40 years you are an Usk Butterfly – named after the small butterfly which craftsmen at the Usk Japanning works marked on their wares to distinguish them from similar products made at Pontypool. Good for the soul

It’s not surprising, then, that making music has an increasingly positive image in the media. In recent television programmes such as BBC2’s The Choir and Boys Don’t Sing the wonderful Gareth Malone has quietly proven the benefits of singing. So music is cool.

And it’s not just for girls. Our healthy tradition has long encouraged grown men to tackle hard on the rugby pitch in the afternoon and sing with gusto in the concert hall that very evening.

‘Being part of a choir is very rewarding,’ says Tom Lewis, secretary of Chepstow Male Voice Choir. ‘Learning and performing music is an enjoyable experience, with a strong sense of comradeship within the choir. And through our performing, we hope we enrich others.’

Sounds almost like Utopia, here in Chepstow.

A relatively new choir – formed a little over 20 years ago – Chepstow Male Voice Choir regularly performs across the UK and abroad; a recent highlight was coming third in class in the highlycompetitive National Eisteddfod of Wales. The choir members are keen to share their enjoyment of music, so guests are welcome at their rehearsals. ‘Visitors may not be in this area when we’re doing a concert but the chances are they’ll be able to come along to a

Old, New, Borrowed, Blue In this year of the Royal Wedding, Abergavenny Museum is holding an exhibition (from January to May) about weddings and christenings through the ages. It features local items including this 17th-century betrothal ring found at Llantilio Crossenny by a metal detectorist. Life changing moments

Our castles top the bill A recent VisitBritain poll of visitors from twenty countries revealed that the castles of Wales were top of their list of places to visit in the UK.

It was in Courtroom Number 1 at Shire Hall in Monmouth in January 1840 that the three leaders of the Chartist movement – which sought political reform – were found guilty of High Treason and sentenced to death.

Thousands of men from the South Wales valleys, under the leadership of John Frost, Zephaniah Williams and William Jones, had marched on Newport during the night of 3rd November 1839 to demand justice. The following day they were met by soldiers firing from the Westgate Hotel; around 50 people were wounded and some 22 of the Chartists were killed.

It was these notorious events of 1839/40 which propelled the Shire Hall into the national spotlight. After their sensational trial, the leaders were imprisoned in Monmouth Gaol awaiting their date of execution. Huge public unrest and behind-the-scenes wrangling resulted in Frost, Williams and Jones having their sentences commuted to transportation. On 1st February 1840 the three were taken from Monmouth to Chepstow to begin their journey of exile to Van Diemen’s Land (now Tasmania). Sixteen years later they were granted a full pardon but the demands of the Chartists were not met during their lifetimes.

Following a £4.5 million restoration, this Grade 1 listed Shire Hall, built in 1724, has re-opened. Visitors can now stand in the dock, take their place in the jury, sit in the magistrate’s chair or take the witness stand, and an interactive audiovisual guide tells the Chartists’ story. A significant collection of Chartist artefacts can 22

be seen in the exhibition at Newport Museum, opened last year

by Newport-born actor Michael Sheen, and there are Chartist walking trails around both Newport and Monmouth.

Another Grade 1 listed structure which has benefitted from huge investment is the Transporter Bridge in Newport. Widely regarded as the most recognisable image of Newport, it is one of only seven in the world. This aerial ferry was built to transport passengers and vehicles across the River Usk without obstructing the once very busy shipping routes, and you can still experience the ride across in the gondola today, with or without your car. For a special treat, on open days you can climb up to the top and walk across, enjoying the spectacular view. It’s an awesome structure – even more amazing is that it was built in 1906.

Few fail to be moved by their first glimpse of Tintern Abbey.

Set in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the atmospheric ruins of this Cistercian monastery were recently included by Clive Anslet, Editor of Country Life, in his top ten British heritage sites. Already a must-see destination by the 18th century (as part of the fashionable Wye Tour along the river), the abbey has inspired poems by William Wordsworth and Alfred, Lord Tennyson and paintings by JMW Turner. The appeal of the

Wye Valley is as strong as ever; described as ‘magical and timeless’, the Wye was recently voted the public’s favourite river in England and Wales.

Tintern has touched the world in more tangible ways, too, for it was a centre of industry for hundreds of years. Conservation work has revealed that there were countless forges and furnaces along the Wye and its tributaries in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Brass was first made in Britain at the Abbey Forge in 1568 and metal products were exported from Tintern, via the river Wye, to Bristol and the wider world. It was the first place in Britain to make wire on an industrial scale; its products included fishhooks and pins but the most famous was probably the first transatlantic cable. wyevalleyaonb.org.uk

Spilling the beans Kim Waters, the new Chief Executive of Abergavenny Food Festival, sums up his first year in charge.

‘Abergavenny’s got it all; it looks as though it was designed for a Food Festival,’ says the unashamedly biased Kim Waters in his office overlooking the town’s main street.

‘There’s a lovely mix of venues. Lots of character. A relaxed, convivial atmosphere.

A real Welshness about the place.’

After 28 years working abroad as a senior executive with Reuters News Agency, Newport-born Kim Waters is back home in Wales. He took early retirement in 2009 to become the very first Chief Executive of Abergavenny Food Festival. Up until that point the exponential growth of this Festival was due to the tireless efforts of a small, faithful part-time team, together with a committed Board of local people.

With a house and relatives in the Abergavenny area, Kim Waters had kept a close eye on Abergavenny Food Festival since the inaugural September weekend event twelve years ago. ‘I was immensely proud that this small market town from my neck of the woods was making news across the world. I remember reading an article in The Observer which said ‘Abergavenny is to food as Cannes is to film – an annual festival for spotting rising stars in Britain’s artisanfood firmament’. And after visiting the event a few times Kim decided he’d get involved in some form, if the opportunity ever arose.

Meeting and greeting

So far so good

He recalls his first day in the job which just happened to be the Festival weekend! ‘I was up with the lark. It was magical to see the Festival appear as if out of nowhere, from the mists of early morning. I can see why Tim Hayward in The Guardian put it like this.... ‘so unspoiled and evanescent that it’s like a farmers’ market in Brigadoon’.

But of course, unlike the fabled town which appears only once in a hundred years, we’re determined to keep coming back every third weekend of September! I was astonished at the number of people who suddenly appeared and made things happen: 200 exhibitors, dozens of celebrity guests, a crew of over a hundred students and young people, local businesses and volunteers, hotels and B&Bs, sponsors, funders and council workers.’

The 2010 Festival had a record attendance of over 35,000 people. Behind this headline lie many challenges for an historic market town with a population of around 10,000. ‘Our job is to make it easy for our visitors to browse around a few hundred stalls, move easily between eighty special events and spend a wonderful weekend with friends enjoying good food and drink. We work hard with local organisations to get the balance right.

Keeping the Festival in the town is key; it would be logistically much easier to stick it in marquees in a field somewhere but then the special Abergavenny atmosphere would be lost.’

Expect the unexpected Chief Executive he may be, but Kim is also a member of a small team, and that sometimes means getting stuck into the nitty gritty. Like the time that he received a phone call from the Box Office. ‘I was at a sponsor’s drinks reception on the Saturday evening when I heard that a family had bought tickets for the next day’s fishing expedition with Phil Starmore and Valentine Warner. The problem was that the family were novices and had only just realised they needed their own tackle and fishing licence.

Fortunately I’m a keen angler so I dashed home, dug out some spare equipment and sorted the paperwork online for them.

The result – they loved their first fishing experience!’

On another occasion, Kim made a frantic last-minute dash to the shops to buy several bottles of Martini when a renowned drinks writer turned up to do a tutored tasting without the key ingredient!

Kim even personally chauffeured Clementine – a five-foot long, woolly ewe – up the M4 to meet her owner in pastures new near Euston.

She was one of a flock of huge sheep (made by local artist Bettina Reeves and Arts Alive) sold at the end of the Festival, having graced the rafters of the Victorian market hall.

Kim and the team are keen to develop new aspects to the Festival, including a partnership with Divingusto, a food festival based in Puglia, Italy. ‘Some of their people and produce came to our Festival last year and now we’re planning a return trip – to take the flavour of Abergavenny to their event.’

Another recent innovation is a spin-off event in December, the Abergavenny Food Festival Christmas Fair, which offers food and drink ideas for the perfect festive celebrations.

And he‘s passionate about the Festival’s commitment to families. ‘We want children to enjoy good food and engage with the production process. So they get into the Festival free of charge and we lay on a range of exciting activities at their very own Food Academy, in the grounds of Abergavenny

Castle. I get the impression they thoroughly enjoy themselves; some do every activity on offer, others collect cardboard from the stall-holders and spend all day hurtling down the castle’s grassy slope. Typical of young children – to be given a present and play with the packaging!’

A year into the job Kim feels he is getting to grips with the recipe for a great Food Festival. His essential ingredients include a small but dedicated team, the commitment of a strong Board, programming vision, top quality and diverse artisan producers, great publicity, tight logistics, community involvement, well-organised car-parking, plenty of toilets, miles of Heras fencing, passionate and talented chefs, cooks and writers, perfect weather (helps!), fantastic crew, efficient recycling... and, of course, thousands of visitors looking for a memorable day out - great shopping, fresh food to eat on the spot and some unforgettable entertainment.
