Monmouthshire & Newport Where Wales & England Meet

On 21st June 2008 there will be over 16 hours and 41 minutes of daylight on the Skirrid mountain near Abergavenny on the edge of the Brecon Beacons.

2

We’ll give you some ideas about how you could fill that time in these glorious Welsh borderlands. But we can’t guarantee a glorious sunset!

You’re welcome to come on other days, too. Come. Rain or shine.

Sarah goes rock-climbing in Dewstow's subterranean fern grotto

mind your own business By day, Sarah is the Head Gardener at Dewstow Hidden Gardens and Grottoes; in her spare time she enjoys potholing and climbing. Which is just as well because she’s often clambering over rocks to remove unwanted plants, like Soleirolia soleirolii (or ‘Mind Your Own Business’ as it is more commonly known), from hard-to-reach corners of underground tunnels.

So Sarah’s half-archaeologist, half-detective, half-gardener… OK, so that doesn’t add up. Let us put it another way - Sarah’s not your average gardener. But, then, there’s nothing average about Dewstow.

Back in 2000 the new owner of the Dewstow estate found a partly-buried step in his garden. After much digging, his team uncovered a vast Grade 1 listed garden including underground grottoes, designed by eminent 19th century landscapers Pulham & Son. One of the most significant examples of Pulham’s work, the 7 acres contain rock pools, ponds, water features and ornamental areas made from ‘Pulhamite’ – the patented artificial ‘sandstone’.

1 Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – the Wye Valley

Judy Edwards took a group of museum lovers to Dewstow last summer. They were amazed by the spectacular view of the Severn estuary and the unique subterranean gardens being excavated. ‘Stunning gardens – even better than Heligan and no longer lost!’ Sarah spends entire days on her knees. ‘We use small brushes and trowels to unearth the treasures,’ confirms Sarah, excitedly. ‘And we know there is still more waiting to be re-discovered. It’s thrilling!’

you don’t have to be fit You don’t have to be fit to come here. And you certainly don’t need to work up a sweat once you’ve arrived (though there are over 1,000 miles of public footpaths)! But we guarantee you’ll want to get outdoors. So you can enjoy things you might not have time for at home. Seeing the early morning frost on the autumn hedgerow. Feeling that first bite on the end of the line. Freewheeling down the hill and ringing your bell. Or just walking to the local shop, instead of driving. Mike walks miles, up and down the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, as part of his job with British Waterways. And it’s a labour of love. ‘I’m outdoors whatever the weather so I get wet quite often but it keeps me active and I experience things that many people don’t. And I get to meet visitors every day. I’m privileged.’

6

Come across him along the Mon & Brec, as the locals call it, and he’ll pass on useful snippets. Where the bluebells are at their best, where the blackberries are extra sweet, which is the easiest (or hardest) path up that mountain. He’ll talk about almost anything but his passion is fishing. And he’s spoilt for choice - the Wye, the Usk, Llandegfedd reservoir, Cwm Hedd Fishing Lakes and year-round sea angling keep him busy on his days off. Mike’s enthusiasm for all things outdoors is unstoppable. And infectious. You may find yourself joining a guided walk in the Brecon Beacons National Park, saddling up for a pony trek in the Black Mountains, hiring a bike along the Peregrine Path (a riverside route along the former railway line from Monmouth to Symonds Yat) or packing a picnic and taking a boat out for the day on the Mon & Brec canal.

10 good reasons Here’s why you should experience golf in the Wye Valley & Vale of Usk 1. Play the course that will host the 2010 Ryder Cup The Celtic Manor Resort, near the city of Newport, is offering golfers a limited opportunity to play the new Ryder Cup course, Twenty Ten. This spectacular 7,493 yard, par 71 course is the first ever to have been specifically designed to host the Ryder Cup. The resort also has 2 other championship courses, 4 restaurants, 2 hotels, 2 tennis courts, shooting, fishing, mountain biking, walking trails, a Golf Academy, 2 health clubs, Convention Centre, Exhibition Hall and 31 function rooms for up to 1500 delegates. Phew!

4. ‘Cresta Run’ is exhilarating Almost a double dogleg, and entirely downhill, the aptly-named 8th hole at Monmouth Golf Club (Winner of Welsh Golf Club in Bloom 2007) was recently included in the book Britain's 100 Extraordinary Golf Holes.

2. There are ranges - A range of styles across our 18 golf clubs, from the established parkland course at Newport (over 100 years old) to the relatively young inland links at Woodlake Park (opened in 1993)

6. There’s a Scottish influence Mr James Braid, the Scot who designed Gleneagles, also created the riverside course at Monmouthshire Golf Club near Abergavenny.

- Driving ranges at half of our golf clubs - A range of facilities from the sublime… (you be the judge!) - And a range of green fees starting at under £20 3. It’s unhurried You’ll find good access to tee off times and you can go at your own pace.

8

5. It’s a great spectator sport The Summer of Golf programme, organised by Ryder Cup Wales, attracts world-class players to tournaments such as The Celtic Manor Wales Open in May/June. And with our Watch and Play packages you can play the course the very next day. www.greensofsouthernwales .com/watch-and-play.aspx

7. The giant chestnut tree on the second fairway awaits its next victim It’s been there at Marriott St. Pierre, near Chepstow, since around 1600, and has tested golfers in the Dunlop Masters, the Curtis Cup and the Solheim Cup (the women’s equivalent of the Ryder Cup). Let battle commence. Actress Jane Seymour sinks a putt in the All*Star Cup at The Celtic Manor Resort

8. ‘I chose The Celtic Manor Resort to become the home of the Faldo Series and Team Faldo because of its first class golf courses and academy facilities’ Nick Faldo MBE. The Celtic Manor Golf Academy is one of the best facilities of its kind in Europe, providing tuition from a team of coaching professionals. 9. Non-golfer partners will see more than the clubhouse In fact, you’ll be lucky to see them. Spas for relaxation, craft courses for inspiration, vineyards for intoxication, castles for exploration, paragliding for trepidation, gardens for cultivation, hilltops for exclamation! 10. ‘Fantastic’ That’s how Greg Norman, touring professional here in the 1980s, described the four short holes on the course at The Rolls of Monmouth. Peter Corrigan, Independent on Sunday has called it the ‘Rolls

Royce’ of golf courses, not just because the first Rolls Royce engine was built here. The clubhouse is the former workshop and garage of the 18th century mansion which was the home of Charles Stuart Rolls, the early aviator and motoring pioneer. We didn’t dream these up ourselves. We talked to real people who are passionate about golf, including Tom, who has been a member of The Rolls of Monmouth since he was ten! warning: unsuitable* * for persons of a boring nature, for those who lack get-up-and-go, or for persons who like doing the same thing every year

If you don’t like changing your routine or stepping outside your comfort zone, please turn to page 12 right now. If you’re still with us…. that’s fantastic. You’re clearly up for a challenge and you won’t be disappointed. ‘It’s about mind-set, isn’t it? Trying out a new activity.’ That’s according to Andy, workshop manager at Bike Base, an independent bike shop and cycle-hire company in Abergavenny. ‘I meet people of all shapes and sizes, young and old. A few are fit; some haven’t ridden a bike since they were at school, years ago. But they all want to ‘have a go’ - some more confidently than others’, says Andy. ‘A few hours or a few days later, they’re back. Often with sore bits but also with smiles and very pleasant memories to take home,’ adds Andy. There is no shortage of super, and superlative, challenges in the Wye Valley & Vale of Usk. Europe’s deepest inland water facility, the National Diving & Activity Centre at Tidenham, near Chepstow, runs Discover Scuba Diving courses. Llandegfedd reservoir, near Usk, offers windsurfing, dinghy sailing and kayaking, with or without tuition. And each May the River Wye hosts the longest river raft race (100 miles!) in Europe.

Not content with that? Try a dawn or dusk hot air balloon flight, a trip in a glider from the South Wales Gliding Club near Usk or an exhilarating 20-minute tandem paragliding flight (with an instructor!) from the Blorenge mountain overlooking Abergavenny. Prefer to keep your feet on terra firma? There’s plenty of ground to cover in the 177-mile Offa’s Dyke Path, which runs from Chepstow to Prestatyn along the England-Wales border. Slightly more manageable, by degrees, are the Wye Valley Walk (136 miles), the Usk Valley Walk (48 miles) and the circular Three Castles Walk (19 miles). In March the South Wales Three Peaks Trial takes place over the mountains around Abergavenny and the Big Black Mountains Challenge in May offers a choice of testing routes in the same area. And Andy’s keen to point out that two of the long-distance routes on the National Cycle Network start in Chepstow: Lôn Las Cymru (185 miles) heads north through the Brecon Beacons to Snowdonia, and the Celtic Trail (220 miles) traverses the southern edge of Wales, crossing Newport’s Transporter Bridge before heading further west.

It’ a scream

Remember to duck

So we challenge you: go home with a real achievement this year. But don’t even attempt to get out of your armchair if you read this page by mistake! 11

According to Peter, one of the guides at Big Pit: National Coal Museum, you may need a whiff as you climb the 50 steps from the Winding House to the Pithead Baths. But the effort’s worth it because you get a feel for the true scale of things. You look down on the pit (which stopped producing coal in 1980), Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway and Blaenavon Ironworks - just a few of the fascinating features in Blaenavon World Heritage Site. ‘It’s 360° industrial heritage up here and we’re all artefacts’, Peter laughs, pointing to his orange-overall-clad mates, all guides at Big Pit. It’s true. Every guide at Big Pit is an ex-miner. Their first-hand experience, combined with your 300 feet descent in the cage to pit bottom for an underground tour, makes your day out pretty realistic and no doubt contributed to Big Pit being awarded the Gulbenkian Prize for Museum of the Year in 2005. ‘Sharing my memories with visitors is a wonderful job. I love talking about my old butties and the laughs we had at work. We’d shovel about 15 ton of coal on to the conveyor each shift. It was hard graft being a miner but the camaraderie underground is like nothing else.’

The thought-provoking stories of many more miners and their families are retold in the exhibition housed in the Pit Head Baths, which was recently voted Wales’ most loved historic icon by viewers of BBC TV’s National Treasures. The canteen is still there, too. But there are no clean or dirty sides now; you can sit anywhere and enjoy a cup of tea in the exact room where miners have quenched their thirst since 1939, surrounded by poignant black and white photographs.

Newport Transporter Bridge, built in 1906 - one of only three working examples in the world

There are other fascinating stories to be uncovered at: Fourteen Locks Canal Centre, near Newport - where the canal originally rose 168 feet in half a mile The Old Station, Tintern - exhibitions in railway carriages, a tea shop in the station, a gallery in the old signal box and a train in miniature! Newport Transporter Bridge - an aerial ferry that still carries cars and pedestrians on a two-minute trip across the River Usk.

A relaxed feel now at the once busy Old Station in Tintern

Glossary Baths - rows and rows of showers where the miners washed after each shift Butties - male work colleagues with whom you have a shared experience Cage - the lift, with steel wire sides, which takes the guides and visitors at a maximum speed of 7 feet per second from ground level to pit bottom, 300 feet below the surface. Clean side -an area for miners in clean clothes Dirty side - an area for miners in dirty clothes Have a whiff - Have a rest, take a break, stop for a moment

what is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare? W H Davies, Newport boy, 1871-1940

At mid-point in her demanding career Jean took time for herself, to reflect on what really mattered. The result was an entirely different way of life; Jean became ordained as a priest in the Church in Wales two years ago.

The visitor book at Llangattock Lingoed church is proof of the new life in the village. ‘We’ve experienced a real sense of community here. The peace and goodwill is tangible’, writes Mr Thompson.

She’s never looked back. And her transformation has helped to breathe life into her local community. Jean is a founding member of the Village Alive Trust, which seeks to sustain the rural area around the villages of Skenfrith, Cross Ash, Llangattock Lingoed and Grosmont which she loves so much. The Trust is recording memories of rural life, helping to restore historic buildings and re-establishing community events such as the once popular Lammas Fairs.

Jean took the time to ‘stand and stare’ and appreciate what was around her. Now she’s more alive then ever. And so is her village.

Yes, Jean is still a busy woman. But now her priorities are different and she rates her achievements differently. ‘I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to get people dancing round the maypole. The local schoolchildren are really excited by it. They tie themselves up in knots at first but they also learn things… concentration, team work, maths, rhythm, local history. And visitors love this colourful spectacle - watching how the various dances create different, intricate patterns around the 12ft high maypole.’

mdf and a lick of paint Wandering around our historic houses and castles (there are dozens of them) your imagination can run riot, dreaming up what the inhabitants had for breakfast, how they coped with the smells of the garde robe and how they decorated their rooms. The latest, fashionable colours? Tried and tested limewash? Wallhangings or not? You’ll find full-on interior design in The Gilt Room at Tredegar House in Newport, one of the finest 17th century mansions in Britain. The Morgan family, who lived here for over five hundred years, right up until 1951, certainly knew how to impress. But, then again, The Gilt Room is not all that it appears, according to housekeeper, Cait. ‘The ‘walnut’ panelling is actually painted pine. And the twisted columns of the chimney piece are pine, too, painted to imitate marble! ‘A bit like using MDF nowadays, I suppose,’ says Cait. ‘You get to know these secrets when you spend so much time up close to it!’ she adds, checking a gilded surface for any trace of dust.

It was certainly well-used in the 1930s when Evan Morgan held wild weekend parties. He even had some steps built inside the room so party-goers could get out through the window to enjoy the night air. If you need further help conjuring up what life was really like, you’ll find plenty of living history events, from the clash of gladiators in Caerleon Roman Amphitheatre to medieval banquets at Caldicot Castle. And there are the bloody battles. This border area has seen its fair share of feuds and treachery. Not least the 1175 Christmas Day massacre at Abergavenny Castle, when Norman Lord William de Braose invited the local Welsh chieftains to dinner and promptly killed them. Almost inevitably, retaliations took place.

Gladiators marching to Caerleon's Roman Amphitheatre

Summer sunshine on the golden turrets of 15th century Raglan Castle

That’s all in the past, of course. But occasionally even today’s re-enactments draw blood from willing combatants, as they get into the spirit of things.

an old family recipe Sally has been baking cakes since she was a girl. She learnt her favourite recipes from her mother in their farmhouse kitchen. ‘We always had four meals a day in our house: breakfast, dinner, tea and supper. My favourite was tea. Still is. Scones with homemade jam, warm welsh cakes, bara brith,’ she recounts. None of her recipes are written down but she’s passed them on to her daughters, who enjoy helping her in the kitchen. She still uses an old-fashioned weighing scales and still bakes daily. But now it’s at The Angel Hotel in Abergavenny, where she creates amazing afternoon teas. Sally is very down-to-earth about her pastries and cakes; ‘we always enjoy these at home,’ she says. In fact, all that practice has made perfect and The Angel Hotel in Abergavenny has been rewarded with membership of The Tea Guild in recognition of Sally’s afternoon teas. The entire afternoon tea experience at The Angel Hotel is a real treat – exquisite sandwiches, elegant cake stands, bone china, attentive service. And any remaining cakes are put in a box, carefully tied with ribbon, for you to take home. Of course, you may have an appetite at other times, too: - lunch at The Bell at Skenfrith, Michelin Pub of the Year 2007,

accompanied by an excellent bottle of wine from their exhaustive wine list which received the AA Wine Award in 2007 - a celebratory dinner at The Crown at Whitebrook, where Head Chef (and local boy) James Sommerin is still smiling at his ‘dream come true’ of receiving a Michelin star last year. it’s a glocal economy Sioni Rhys Handweavers, near Abergavenny, is a partnership of designer Dennis Mulcahy and weaver Stuart Neale. For more than 20 years they have promoted the art of Welsh handweaving, for which this district on the edge of the Black Mountains is renowned. Recently, through a chance encounter, they came across a scrap of cloth woven almost a century ago on the local Llanover estate. ‘It was a real find’, says Stuart. ’We thought all their designs had been lost.’ From that fragment, they created three traditional designs, on a 19th century handloom, for carthenni (woollen bed covers and throws). And so they perpetuate a tradition. Shortage 1 Landscapes which induce boredom 2 Expensive installations masquerading as art in exclusive galleries, surveyed mainly by critics from the broadsheets 3 An exciting, 24-hour music scene comprising X-Factor contestants with delusions of grandeur, talentless karaoke singers and loud muzak 4 Concert tickets that cost an arm and a leg 5 Women in Welsh costumes spinning wool (yes, they’re still on a few postcards!) 6 People to carry on the traditions (but there are courses where you can learn techniques such as spinning, basketry, weaving, hedge-laying and stone-carving) 7 Stuff churned out by an overseas factory and flown in (with lots of carbon) 8 Tat

22

But Stuart is keen to advance the tradition of weaving to fit the 21st century, and also produces exquisite fashion textiles in luxury fibres, much influenced by the dramatic landscape colours around their hillside studio. As chairman of the Black Mountains Craft Circle, which runs a co-operative retail outlet at Court Cupboard near Abergavenny, Stuart is convinced that many people are interested in finding out how a product was conceived and produced. ‘The new Made in Monmouthshire trails are helping to add value to local products. naked sailor shocks town Where am I? 1. It has a vast castle on the very edge of Wales, an award-winning museum, a wonderful blend of historic buildings and modern artworks (including a naked sailor), a lively summer festival, year-round excitement at the racecourse and is the starting point for a 136-mile walk. 2. Possibly the site of Camelot, it hosts an International Sculpture and Arts Festival each July, is home to the Ffwrwm Arts & Crafts Centre, boasts a range of splendid pubs and restaurants near the River Usk and was one of the principal military bases in Roman Britain complete with 5,000-seater amphitheatre. 3. A regular winner of Wales in Bloom, it hosts a colourful Open Gardens weekend in June and a country show in September, has a castle and a Rural Life Museum and is a prime spot for fishing on the Usk. 4. Home to Wales National Velodrome, The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre and the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup, it has the 100-year old Transporter Bridge for crossing the Usk, the grand 17th century Tredegar House, Fourteen Locks Canal Centre,

Museum and Art Gallery with a significant collection from the 1839 Chartist uprising and the place to catch a summer open-top bus tour around all the landmarks or a cruise on the River Severn. 5. The birthplace of Henry V, it is an elegant border town with a 13th century stone bridge, a Georgian Shire Hall where the Chartists were tried and condemned, a museum about Nelson, a free summer music festival and Wales’ largest one-day country show. 6. Mentioned in the Domesday book, battles, theatrical performances and medieval banquets take place here, at the Norman castle that was restored to be a Victorian home. And close by are the remains of Venta Silurum, the largest civilian settlement in Roman Wales. 7. On the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, it’s surrounded by seven mountains (a bit like Rome!), has a Food Festival in September, excellent produce markets and independent shops, St Mary’s Priory Church with a huge collection of medieval tombs and the Monmouthshire & Brecon canal.

it’s all in the stars For 2008, all accommodation grades in this publication have been based on a new set of common quality standards agreed by Visit Wales, Visit Britain, Visit Scotland and the AA. The star ratings reflect the facilities and overall quality of the experience.

Here are the quality ratings:

Grades may therefore be different from previous years due to the new scheme’s requirements. However, a change does not mean that the quality is any different so customers should not compare the previous star grading with the stars given for 2008.

A Guide to Quality Assurance All the accommodation featured in this publication has been quality graded so you can make your choice in confidence, knowing that each place to stay has been given a star grading according to the quality and facilities on offer. Star grades mean that you can be sure of standards and choose the accommodation that’s just right for you. Visit Wales/AA are the only checking agents in Wales, checking out over 5,000 places. In the case of properties handled by self-catering agencies, the frequency between visits can be longer. Occasionally, it has not been possible to visit the accommodation prior to publication. In these instances, the property is marked as ‘Awaiting Grading’. STARS are your guide to quality. The Star Quality Grading Schemes apply to all types of accommodation: serviced – hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfast, farm accommodation, hostel/hostel type accommodation, self-catering cottages and apartments and caravan holiday home and touring/camping parks.
