Somewhere different in the Wye Valley & Vale of Usk 2007
Relax. You’ve found the perfect place to unwind. Home to the Ryder Cup 2010, the Wye Valley & Vale of Usk is an area of unrivalled beauty, which is easy to get to from anywhere in the UK.

A place of breathtaking scenery with space to do your own thing. Whatever that is. At whatever pace you choose. Take a gentle stroll along footpaths and simply enjoy the views, or indulge yourself at one of our luxurious country house hotels or spas.
This is an area where artists and craftspeople draw daily inspiration and where you can sample some of the best food and drink in Wales, much of it produced on our doorstep. But don’t just take our word for it, try it out for yourself - come and stay.
Take time to explore our enchanting villages and diverse urban attractions. Each with its own distinct character. Enjoy a leisurely lunch in the elegant border town of Monmouth, packed full of fascinating history, or take in the bright lights of Newport, Britain’s youngest city.
While you’re here you’ll find we’ve got some very unusual customs. Take the Mari Lwyd – the grey mare bringing good luck. You can still see her at Chepstow at New Year. There’ll be a horse’s skull, a broom handle, a sheet, ribbons and rhyming. The Mari’s taken to greet our English neighbours and everyone can toast the year to come with the Wassail cup – the delicious forerunner to mulled wine. Iechyd Da! Cheers!
For a faster pace, try a tandem paragliding or hang-gliding flight at Abergavenny or canoeing on the rushing River Wye.

There are endless quintessential country churches in timeless landscapes. Visit Llangattock Lingoed Church for its 15th century wall painting of St George and the dragon. Wander around Bettws Newydd Church with its ancient yew tree outside and most complete medieval interior in Wales.

With over 1,000 miles of public footpaths, you’re never far away from a good walk. Along the canal towpath, up the nearest mountain, from one country pub to another. And the popular, themed, guided walks let you share your interests with new friends.
Blow the cobwebs away. Hire a bike and enjoy the freedom of a cycle ride through country lanes. Or take to the saddle for a day’s pony trekking in the Black Mountains. Get to see the countryside from a different angle: sweeping views of rugged escarpments and untamed moorland.
Anglers are absolutely spoilt for choice: the Wye, the Usk, Llandegfedd reservoir, Cwm Hedd Fishing Lakes and year round sea angling. Our enthusiastic local tackle shops provide the very latest information, to help you get a good catch. At Cwm Hedd there are qualified coaches on hand as well as a tackle shop, rod hire and a cosy lodge with disabled access.

It’s not always been a rural idyll. Scratch the surface of this beautiful landscape and a rich industrial heritage is revealed.

Close to Abergavenny lies the Blaenavon World Heritage Site, comprising Blaenavon Ironworks, Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway, Clydach Gorge, the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal and Big Pit Mining Museum of Wales, Winner of the Gulbenkian Prize for Museum of the Year 2005. An industrial archaeologist’s paradise, it’s gritty stuff. Go underground with a miner and search out real stories, real people. Uncover the commercial heyday of the canal at Goytre Wharf, or at Fourteen Locks, one of the most impressive flights of locks in Britain, rising 168 feet in half a mile. Follow a car trail around Cordell Country, to the locations that inspired Alexander Cordell, author of Rape of the Fair Country. See the restoration progress of Newport’s medieval ship, which was discovered in 2002, during construction of the Riverside Theatre and Arts centre, and dates back to the 1500s. It is the only intact medieval ship to be found in Britain, having been preserved in alluvial mud for hundreds of years, and is widely considered to be one of the most important archaeological finds in recent times.
Expect the unexpected. The Nelson Museum in Monmouth has one of the world’s best collections about the famous admiral, including his glass eye. The quirky Newport Transporter Bridge offers a two-minute trip across the Usk on an aerial ferry and Newport’s public art trail includes statues and mosaic murals commemorating the workingclass Chartists, who fought for democracy. Even the picturesque Wye Valley has an industrial past. Below Monmouth the Wye flows past several small rural villages, which in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were important industrial settlements. There is tantalising evidence of wireworks, forges and boat-building. Call at The Old Station, Tintern and discover exhibitions in railway carriages, a tea shop in the station, a gallery in the old station box and a train in miniature!

From mighty Chepstow Castle at the very entrance to Wales, to the isolated White Castle, castles are everywhere in this border land. All shapes and sizes. Each with a turbulent tale. Be the king of the castle and watch them burst into life. Banquets and civil war battles at Caldicot, falconry at Raglan, Tudor life at Abergavenny.
Transport yourself to another time. When the powerful Morgan dynasty lived in Tredegar House, one of the finest 17th century mansions in Britain. There’s no shortage of things to see and do in the ninety acres of parkland, complete with orangery, lake and walled gardens.
Visit your favourite castle again, on a still summer’s evening, when music and voices fill the air. Open-air theatre productions offer yet more insights into our enduring heritage sites.
Head to Caerwent, to see the remains of the largest centre of civilian population in Roman Wales or to Caerleon, the Roman military base. Hear the clash of gladiators in the amphitheatre. Or imagine the legendary court of King Arthur there. According to some, it may be Camelot.

Choosing and Booking your Accomodation It’s All in the Stars All the accommodation featured in this brochure has been inspected and graded for quality annually – so you can make your choice in confidence, knowing that each place to stay has been given a Star grading according to the quality on offer. All the accommodation listed complies with the Visit Wales’s own grading schemes or those of the AA or VisitBritain. Star grades mean that you can be sure of standards and choose the accommodation that’s just right for you. NB Occasionally we have not been able to visit the accommodation prior to publication. In these instances the property is marked as ‘Awaiting Grading’. Hotels, Guest Houses and Farmhouses Visit Wales STARS are your guide to QUALITY. They tell you what you really want to know about places to stay. Places which score highly will have an especially welcoming atmosphere and pleasing ambience, high levels of comfort and guest care and attractive surroundings enhanced by thoughtful design and attention to detail. Here’s the quality rating: ★★★★★ ★★★★ ★★★ ★★ ★
Exceptional Excellent Very good Good Fair to good quality
The Visit Wales grading scheme also spells out the style of accommodation – hotel, inn, farm and so on – so that you have a good idea of the range of facilities on offer. You will see the categories ‘Country Hotel’ and ‘Country House’ in the accommodation listings. The latter offers non-hotel style accommodation. It is important to bear in mind that the Visit Wales Star Grade takes into account the nature of the property and expectation of the guests, so a farmhouse is just as entitled to Five Stars as a country hotel, as long as what it offers is of the highest quality. AA Grading Schemes Visit Wales also recognises businesses that are graded by the AA. All full participants in the AA accommodation schemes have been assessed under quality standards agreed between the AA and VisitBritain. Both schemes rate hotels from one to five stars. For guest houses and other small establishments, one to five diamonds are used.
Award Winners (applicable to guest houses/farmhouses only). The Guest House or Farmhouse Award is given to businesses whose owners have followed a training course in guest house management. Self-Catering Holiday Cottages and Apartments As with hotels and guest houses, Visit Wales uses STARS to denote QUALITY at selfcatering accommodation. The progression from 1-5 stars depends on an increasing level of quality in the facilities and services provided. Here’s the quality rating: ★★★★★ ★★★★ ★★★ ★★ ★
Exceptional Excellent Very good Good Fair to good quality
All establishments will offer a good standard of cleanliness, with furniture, furnishings and fittings in a sound condition. However, places which score highly, will have an exceptional overall level of quality, with the highest standards throughout including cleanliness, maintenance, range of equipment and guest care. There will be outstanding attention to detail with many personal touches. Caravan and Camping Parks STARS also apply to caravan and camping parks, the grade reflecting the overall QUALITY of the park. Here’s the qualtity rating: ★★★★★ ★★★★ ★★★ ★★ ★
Exceptional Excellent Very good Good Fair to good quality
Style of Park To help you make the right choice, each park is categorised as one of the following: HOLIDAY PARK - for holiday caravans, but may also provide touring/camping facilities CAMPING PARK - for tented accommodation only TOURING PARK - for touring caravans and possibly camping; no static holiday caravans (please note: touring parks listed in this publication may be VISIT WALES and/or AA graded)
Dragon Award Winners For excellence in individual caravan accommodation, ask for a caravan that has won the Visit Wales Dragon Award. The caravan will be something special, with a bath or shower and toilet and many extras such as colour TV and heating. General Information Welcome Host The Visit Wales Welcome Host scheme is part of a tradition of friendliness. This customer care scheme, open to everyone from hotel staff to taxi drivers, places the emphasis on hospitality and first-class service. There are three categories: At least 90% of staff are participants At least 75% of staff are participant At least 50% of staff are participants Walkers and Cyclists Welcome Walking and cycling enthusiasts should look out for this sign, which includes the ‘boot’ and ‘wheel’ symbols. Some properties qualify for both symbols, others just the one. The symbols are displayed by properties that have undertaken to provide features which walkers and cyclists always find welcome. They include drying facilities for wet clothes and boots, secure lockable areas for bikes, adequate storage space for rucksacks and packed lunches. Activity Holidays High standards also apply to your safety. Every operator featured in this publication is inspected under the Visit Wales’s accreditation scheme for activities, has a statutory licence from the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) or has been approved by a recognised National Governing Body of Sport or Trade Body. All operators and providers must abide by a Code of Conduct that describes good practice and procedures for the activity in question. By its very nature, participation in any activity will involve an element of risk. Visit Wales cannot guarantee that participants will be free from injury or other misfortune. Nevertheless, its accreditation and inspection schemes attempt to minimise that risk.
Attractions Trained, impartial assessors visit participating visitor attractions annually. All aspects of the visitor experience are sampled, from initial telephone enquiries to catering, retail and toilet facilities, where available. This gives you the confidence that the attraction has been thoroughly checked before you plan your visit. Only those attractions that have been assessed by Visit Wales, and meet the VAQAS Cymru standard, receive the quality marque. Look out for this logo when choosing places to visit. Business Class The Business Class Award has been developed to advise potential visitors what level of business meeting facility or bedroom accommodation participating hotels/venue provide. Platinum, Golf and Silver Awards, recognising the differing range of facilities and services on offer are available for bedroom accommodation and meeting facilities. Accommodating Visitors
M with Disabilities
Visit Wales now recommends that all tourism operators prepare, and make available an Access Statement to potential visitors. This is the only way of accurately describing accessibility in tourism premises. When booking, please ask whether an Access Statement has been prepared for the premises in which you are interested. Businesses using a verified Access Statement will be denoted by this symbol (insert S in circle) in their advertisement. In order to further assist potential visitors, the symbol (SM in circle) will denote businesses, where issues relating to mobility have been addressed or improved. Visit Wales no longer recognises or features the old National Accessibility Scheme disability symbols, as their meaning is open to interpretation by visitors. Please Note All Gradings and Awards were correct at the time of going to press. Occasionally it may not have been possible to undertake a grading. This situation is clearly identified by “Awaiting Grading” appearing within the advertisement/entry. Inspections are on-going and improvements made by establishments may have resulted in a revision since publication. Please check when booking. Further information on Gradings and Awards is available from Visit Wales, Ty Glyndwr, Machynlleth, Powys SY20 8WW Tel: +44 (0) 1654 702584 Fax: +44 (0) 1654 703081 E-mail: quality.tourism@wales.gsi.gov.uk
Any Problems? At the time of the assessment all premises met with the standard required for the Visit Wales quality grade indicated in our publication. Visit Wales cannot be held responsible for any deficiencies in standards and quality of service which manifest themselves after the assessment has taken place. We nevertheless care about your stay in Wales, so if you are dissatisfied with the accommodation in any way please contact the owner or manager of the business at the time of your stay so that matters can be put right. Unfortunately, the Visit Wales is only able to consider an investigation of a complaint about accommodation if you have previously raised the matter with the proprietor or manager. If you have already taken this action but do not feel satisfied with the outcome, please send details of your complaint to the Quality Assurance Department, Visit Wales, Ty Glyndwr, Machynlleth, Powys SY20 8WW within 14 days of your visit. Where possible include the name of the person to whom you referred your complaint in the first instance. The VISIT WALES is not in a position to provide compensation where customers have been unable to resolve any such disputes. If you refer your complaint to the Visit Wales for investigation, we retain the right to use the complaint as we consider appropriate, which may include passing a copy to the proprietor concerned. For further information about VisitBritain or AA grading schemes or to register complaints, please contact: VisitBritain www.visitbritain.com AA Hotel Services Tel: +44 (0)1256 844455 Email: karen.sinclair@theaa.com Prices Hotels, guest houses and farmhouses All prices are PER PERSON, based on TWO PEOPLE sharing a double or twin room. SINGLE ROOM OCCUPANCY will usually be charged extra, and there may be supplements for private bath/shower. Daily rates are for bed and breakfast. Short break rates are for two nights dinner, B&B (Please note that the majority of establishments listed will also offer weekly terms). Self-Catering Holiday Cottages and Apartments Rates are quoted per property per week or short break (2-4 days).
Caravan & Camping Parks Rates for caravan holiday home rental are per unit per week or short break (2-4 days). Touring caravan and camping park rates are for two people and their caravan, motor home or tent per night. Special Offers for Children Many hotels, guest houses and farmhouse have special offers for children, ranging from discounts to free accommodation if they share their parents’ room (you only pay for their meals). Family holiday hotels, especially in major resorts, also cater for one-parent families. Deposits Most operators will ask for a deposit when a reservation is being made. Some establishments may request payment in advance of arrival. Cancellation and insurance When you confirm a holiday booking, please bear in mind that you are entering a legally binding contract which entitles the proprietor to compensation if you fail to take up the accommodation or depart earlier than planned. It’s always wise to arrange holiday insurance to cover you for cancellation and other unforeseen eventualities. If you have to alter your travel plans, please advise the holiday operator or proprietor immediately.

By road The Wye Valley & Vale of Usk is served by excellent trunk roads which provide fast, easy access. The M4 and M48 skirt the southern edge while the A40 runs through the middle of the area. From London and the South of England use the M4 and the Second Severn Crossing or branch off just past Bristol onto the M48 and cross the original Severn Bridge. From South West England use the M5, then M4/M48. From the Midlands and Northern England use the M6, M50 and A40. For the latest traffic information on trunk roads and motorways in Wales, visit www.trafficwales.com A toll is payable when travelling west-bound across either the Severn Bridge (M48) or the Second Severn Crossing (M4). Charges for 2006: Cars and Motor Caravans £4.90, Small Goods Vehicles & Buses £9.80, HGVs & Coaches £14.70, Motorcyclists Free.
