A MESSAGE

FROM THE

PRESIDENT

A

Dear Friends,

s you will read in this edition of Bronco Express, Montini Catholic, once again, completed a very successful school year. Our 2013-14 year will be remembered as one of growth and great accomplishments in the classroom, as well as in our extracurricular and spiritual programs. I am very proud of our students and their commitment to academic excellence, extracurricular involvement as well as achievement.

In this issue you will read about Andy Samide and Dr. Michael Kisicki, two very talented and dedicated teachers. I am also very proud, however, of all of our faculty and staff. Their commitment to our Lasallian Mission of Education, and their dedication to our students, is outstanding.

Our teachers are responsible for many of the success stories that we report to you, but there are many stories that go untold, because they are too numerous to mention – stories about members of our faculty and staff and how they make a difference in a student's life. Our stories are about teachers, coaches, club moderators and administrators who "touch the hearts" of their students - which is truly the foundation of our role as Lasallian Educators. The success that our school community enjoys in academics and extracurricular programs, begins with the faculty and staff who work with our students in the classroom, at club meetings and sports and extracurricular practices. So, not only do we congratulate the Class of 2014, for an outstanding school year, but we also congratulate our faculty and staff for their contribution to this successful year.

The 2013-14 school year was one that experienced a great deal of work and planning for the future of Montini Catholic as well. Principal Maryann O'Neill, our school administration and several faculty committees spent a great deal of time and effort in finalizing plans for our Digital Learning Initiative and in evaluating how the Common Core Standards fit into our curriculum.

Our Board of Directors have reviewed and refined our school's strategic plan for the next three years (2014 through 2017) and our Development office has been working on preliminary plans for the celebration of our 50th Anniversary school year in 2015-16. 2

Bronco Express Summer 2014

“Our 2013-14 year will be remembered as one of growth and great accomplishments in the classroom, as well as in our extracurricular and spiritual programs.” This past school year, we also said goodbye to two excellent members of our faculty and staff, Roland Eckman, a member of our social studies department for ten years, and Robert Landi, a member or our Development office for two years, and our Athletic Director of four years. They have both decided to retire from education at the end of the school year. Each of these men made a significant, positive impact in our school community and they will be hard to replace. I would personally like to thank them for their hard work, dedication and commitment to our students and school community. Thank you Rollie and Bob and God bless.

As we look ahead, I am confident that our 49th year of Lasallian, Catholic education will also be very successful. Enrollment is very healthy, with a starting day number near 690 (10 students more than our target enrollment of 680). Advanced Placement Scores and ACT scores for this school year (recorded this past spring) are in – and, as expected, they are top notch.

In addition, our entire school community is excited about the start of our Digital Learning Initiative for all students. There has been much planning by our TAC (Technology Advisory Committee). Our teachers have put in many hours of professional development time. And, Peter Farina, our Director of Technology, and his technology team, have been installing infrastructure upgrades throughout the summer. Their diligence has ensured that every Montini Catholic student will have an iPad for organizational, note taking and instructional purposes. This is certainly an exciting and historic event in our academic program, and I am sure it will be one of the many success stories we will report about during the 2014-15 school year.

Please continue to keep our Montini Catholic School community in your prayers, and as always, "May Jesus Live in Your Hearts . . . Forever.”

Sincerely,

Jim Segredo President MONTINI.ORG

TECHNOLOGY

TECH SYMPOSIUM AT APPLE TEACHER ATTENDS

DuE TO THE SuCCESS OF LAST YEAr’S IPAD PILOT PrOgrAM, MOnTInI IS EMBArkIng On ITS LArgEST ExPAnSIOn OF TECHnOLOgY THIS FALL.

MONTINI.ORG

Montini Catholic Technology Director and instructor, Peter Farina, recently attended Apple’s CIO Tech Symposium in Cupertino, CA. Farina attended meetings and seminars on the benefits of technology in the classroom and took a tour of Apple’s research and Development lab. He joined technology directors and teachers from schools around the country at the conference.

Farina has been Montini Catholic’s Technology Director for the past 14 years. under his leadership the school has not only continued to keep up with the advancements in technology, but expanded its use in classroom instruction and science labs as well. SMArT®Boards in the classrooms, the use of netbooks for experiments in science labs, and Edline grade reporting, are just a few examples of technology initiatives that he has implemented at Montini Catholic. He has also been a standing member of the Diocese of Joliet Technology Committee.

The tech symposium visit came on the heels of an exciting expansion and continuation of Montini Catholic High School’s Digital Learning Initiative. This past school year, due to the

generosity of Leigh Ann kazma, her parents, Jerry and Margaret kazma, and the kazma Foundation, the school was able to provide teachers with iPads for professional development training and for use in the classroom. The iPads also allowed Montini to embark on a 1 to 1 iPad pilot program with a small group of students. Due to the success of the pilot program, Montini is now embarking on its largest expansion of technology.

Beginning this fall, Montini Catholic will begin its first ever, school wide 1 to 1 device program. Apple iPads will be distributed to every student at the beginning of the school year. These devices are not replacing the teacher, but will be enhancing the classroom environment by allowing students to develop better study habits and stronger organization skills.

Farina has been an integral part of the creation and implementation of this particular stage of Montini’s Digital Learning Initiative and is one of the major driving forces behind it. Over the past few summers he has been working on the infrastructure to ensure a seamless transition going into the new school year. Bronco Express Summer 2014 3

LASALLIAN EDUCATOR AWARD

DR. MICHAEL KISICKI RECEIVES

Every year, the Montini Catholic administration selects a member of its faculty and staff to receive the Lasallian Educator Award. The award is presented to an individual who, in their work, "touches the hearts" of students and colleagues on a regular basis. Historically, the award is presented to an individual who models what St. John Baptist De La Salle, founder of De La Salle Christian Brothers Schools, envisioned as the type of a Catholic, Lasallian Educator he preferred for his schools.

Montini Catholic is proud to congratulate Dr. Michael Kisicki on earning this great honor. Dr. kisicki is an outstanding English teacher who also serves as the school's Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction. He joined the Montini Catholic school community in 2006.

"Dr. kisicki is a talented and energetic teacher and administrator,” said Montini Catholic President, Jim Segredo. “His dedication to his students’ academic achievements, as well as their personal well being, is a standard of teaching we all try to achieve. He is a challenging teacher who engages his students in the classroom, and always goes the extra mile for them.”

ANDY SAMIDE

50 YEARS OF SERVICE

When Mr. Andy Samide began his career in education, Lyndon B. Johnson was President, and gas was 30¢ a gallon. Of course, times have changed since then, but Mr. Samide’s passion for education has not.

He began teaching at Wheaton north High School, has also taught at north Central College, and now continues to teach math at College of DuPage and Montini Catholic High School.

Mr. Samide has been named Illinois Teacher of the Year twice, earned a Certificate of Excellence in Teaching from the Presidential Scholars Program, the T.E. rine Award from the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ITCM) and has co-authored three geometry textbooks for Scott Foresman and Company. He began at Montini Catholic in 2005 and has been a tremendous mentor to students and staff ever since. He takes much pride in fostering a passion for mathematics in his students. “Mr. Samide encourages and challenges his students to problem solve as both independent and collaborative learners,” says Principal Maryann O’neill. “We are lucky to have him at Montini Catholic.”
