Vitamin D and Gum Disease It has long been known that Vitamin D is essential for bone health. It also affects other organ systems like the immune and cardiovascular systems, muscles and the brain. It has been reported that approximately one billion people worldwide are either Vitamin D deficient or insufficient. Sources of Vitamin D come from sun exposure and food. Different factors, such as skin color (amount of melanin), age, fat content and living in areas where the exposure to sun is minimal affect how much vitamin D the body makes and requires.

Mild deficiency of Vitamin D causes symptoms such as loss of appetite, diarrhea, insomnia, and muscle weakness.

Vitamin D deficiency is also associated with other diseases such as Rickets, periodontitis, fractures from falls, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

Diagnosing Vitamin D deficiency is accomplished by measuring the serum

levels. Treatment of Vitamin D deficiency includes exposure to sunlight, artificial ultraviolet B or taking supplements, and each has their own drawbacks. With both sunlight and artificial UVB, patients should know that exposure will age the skin and increase the risk of non-melanoma skin cancers. Treatment with oral supplements is difficult because high doses are required to get adequate serum levels and this, again, depends on the amount of sunlight exposure, body fat, age and skin color.

Affecting approximately 35% of US adults over the age of thirty, periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease. Several studies have found lower levels of Vitamin D to be associated with bone loss around teeth, receding gums and inflammation of the gums. Recently, a study found that periodontal disease is more common in women with osteoporosis and is associated with lower Vitamin D levels in the body. Periodontal disease is a multifactorial disease, initiated by bacterial infection, leading to bone loss around the teeth.

Vitamin D plays an important role in calcium and bone homeostasis, as well as immune function. Vitamin D and calcium deficiencies can lead to bone loss and

increased inflammation, making patients more susceptible to periodontal disease.

Vitamin D, although classically thought of as a bone hormone, also plays a role in other parts of the body. It is a predictor for bone health and also a potential independent predictor of the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. So, whether you have gum disease or not, it is important to get your teeth checked by the dentist to determine the risk factors, to get treated, or, even better, to prevent periodontitis in the first place.

WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?

Well, Mt. Diablo finally has a cloud glooming on the top and the forecast this beautiful November day says there is a slight chance of rain. Everyone is praying that Mother Nature will bring us a wet winter. What a perfect time to look in on a local business who can get us ready for that time of the year.

A Cost Effective Heating Alternative, 8 Steps to Install Your Gas-Fired Heater This is the time of year when home improvement and hardware stores begin to advertise the season’s super-duper deals on the newest and most modern, thermostatically controlled, ultra energyefficient, electric baseboard heaters.

There are two common types: 1) Those with filaments (bars or coils), and 2) Those with filaments and water filled housings (these are known as hydronic units). Both types are inexpensive and easy to install, but there’s a catch – electric baseboard heaters use electricity to create heat.

Compared to gas fired heaters, electricresistant heating is simply not cost effective. There are exceptions. In a few parts of the country electricity is very inexpensive – like along the Columbia River in Washington state. And in some areas gas isn’t available. If your home is all electric and gas or propane isn’t practical, at least be sure to look for electrical units with high efficiency ratings. Oh, and don’t forget to look for the UL approval sticker.

If you have an older home, be careful; adding electric resistance heating could burden old electric circuitry. If electric heating is your choice, then be sure to install a dedicated circuit (wire and breaker) to handle the increased electrical load. A small electric-resistance heater will use more power than a dozen average television sets.

Gas-fired heaters (furnaces) are more expensive to purchase and slightly more difficult to install than electric baseboard heaters, but in places where gas is

available, the operating cost of a gas furnace will save big dollars month after month.

A gas-fired heater doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive – as it would be in the case of central heating or even a typical five-foot tall wall furnace. Small wall units that are intended to be used as “area heaters” that use less fuel. Energyefficient gas-fired wall-mount heaters can be purchased that will easily heat an area of about 400 to 600 square feet. Best of all, they can be installed in a weekend.

Follow the instructions to ignite the unit, set the integral thermostat to the desired temperature and start saving money.

If you have an electric-resistance heating unit, store it for use in an emergency.

The only requirement associated with these smaller units is that the unit be mounted on the inside of an exterior wall.

This is because the exhaust for such a unit is designed to exhaust through the wall upon which it is mounted and directly to the outside. No fancy flues or ducting are needed here.

Installation is unbelievably easy: First, use the template that comes with the unit to cut a hole in the wallboard between two studs.

Next, use the same template again to locate and cut a hole through the exterior wall-covering for the exhaust port. A pilot hole drilled from the inside makes alignment easy.

Once the holes have been cut, it’s time to run the gas line. This is the hardest part of the job and you might want to hire a plumber to do it.

When the gas line is complete, the unit can be installed.

Use four screws to mount the heating unit to the interior side of the wall.

Next, use four more screws to mount the exhaust flange to the exterior surface (Remember to use lots of exterior caulk between the exhaust flange and the exterior wall surface before attaching the flange).

First Generation Farmers (FGF) is a non-profit community farm based in Knightsen that emerged in mid-2013, in response to the declining number of farmers and farms in the US. One quarter of farmers are set to retire by 2020, and there is a growing trend for landowners to sell land for more profitable, non-agricultural uses, such as urban development. “This is going to be the biggest land change of hands that the United States has ever seen, and if we don’t start using it to grow food, we’re going to have a food shortage,” said Alli Cecchini, founder of First Generation Farmers.

With the US population to increase 15 million by 2020, and an increasing demand for domestic food, we need more farmers.

FGF wants to launch the first and largest incubator program to get younger generations of people interested in farming. So, they’re getting ready for their First Generation Farmers Kickstarter launch! To get the program up and running, they need your support to expand their greenhouse, buy seeds and supplies, and train younger farmers. They already have the land and the farming skills, but need more people to get involved. Right now they’re farming on less than five acres of specialty organic crops, but have more than 100 acres to work with in California’s fertile East Bay. That’s a lot of land — enough to produce up to 150,000 lbs. of food per year!

That’s why they’re launching an incubator program, which will provide aspiring farmers and anyone interested in sustainable agriculture with the resources, hands-on skills and land to grow food year-round. They are open to both short-term and longterm farmers, specifically young, aspiring ones. Their Kickstarter goal is to raise $50,000 in 40 days. You can help by donating to their Kickstarter, which launched on November 28th, 2014. Our purpose is to encourage interest in gardening through education and the beautification of the community.
