Cold Sores Each year, 150 million people in the U.S. (one-third of the population) suffer from the pain and embarrassment of cold sores. A total of 380 million outbreaks of cold sores occur annually nationwide, lasting approximately seven to ten days each.

In the United States alone, more than $1 billion is spent every year to bring relief to cold sores or fever blisters, as they are commonly known. As oral healthcare professionals, we see the distress cold sores cause in patients. Patients are upset by the physical discomfort and, at times, are distraught by the social embarrassment cold sores cause. A number of stimuli have been shown to trigger cold sore recurrences, including changes in the immune status, physical trauma, emotional stress, and exposure to UV-B radiation from the sun.

Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus-type 1 (HSV-1). The

human herpes viruses affect more than 90 percent of the world’s six billion inhabitants. Three variants of the herpes virus infect the skin and/ or mucous membranes and become latent in the nervous system are the most common. Primary HSV-1 infection goes unnoticed or it may cause blisters in the gums and the oral mucosa, which may range from mild to severe. The severe form may be accompanied by pain and swelling of the lymph nodes, fever and tiredness. Cold sores are the recurrent form of HSV-1 infection after latent infection has been established during the primary HSV-1 infection.

In addition to the traditional modes of infection with HSV-1, accidental selfinoculation of the eyes after touching one’s own oral lesion or coming in contact with another’s cold sore/fever blister can lead to herpes keratitis, infecting the eyes, which is a leading cause of blindness. Cold sore infections (HSV-1) are usually transmitted by an infected person to an uninfected person during two distinct period of life- ages 3yrs to 7yrs and ages 12yrs to 21yrs.

Since most cold sores heal spontaneously within one to two weeks

with no treatment, they are often thought as trivial and unimportant by many. Quite to the contrary, HSV-1 is capable of causing life-threatening and lethal herpes encephalitis in otherwise normal people, blinding infections in newborns, blindness in adults, and serious to life-threatening infections in immunocompromised patients.

Denial may be one of the reasons that increase the risk of transmission of HSV1 to susceptible individuals. There are medications available by prescription to help bring relief to this growing epidemic. Early treatment helps in faster healing rate, relieves the suffering and diminishes the social embarrassment of having to mask an active cold sore.

Installing Vinyl Flooring Putting down vinyl tile flooring is a project that can be done relatively quickly, even though it might well cover a large surface area in your home. If you know a few simple “rules of the road,” you can do a kitchen in a weekend, if you decide to replace the entire floor, or in an afternoon, if you tile over it.

but not least, the best time to check for wood rot and other fungus damage at a wood subfloor is when the floor covering is being changed. Having made this decision, the next thing you’ll have to do is decide between self-sticking tiles or the type used with adhesive. We think the type that requires adhesive will stick better and last much longer.

Except for the application of the adhesive, the process is the same with both types of vinyl tiles. In either case, the substrate that will receive the tile must be absolutely clean and free of any debris, grease, oil or wax.

We think that spending the entire weekend and removing the old floor first is the better way. There are several reasons why covering the old floor can be a problem:

First, if there is a heavy texture in the existing flooring it will more than likely telescope through to the surface of the newly laid flooring.

2) It should be allowed to get tacky before tile is applied (20-30 min. in most cases).

Second, adding a thin smoothing layer of 3/8” underlayment over the old floor covering and under the new one may raise the floor just enough to make it difficult to remove built-in appliances from lower cabinets for repair or replacement.

It also might raise the floor just enough to keep doors from swinging freely. And, last

It is important that the edges of the floor end up being balanced and symmetrical.

To ensure this result, lay one course of loose tiles along each of the two reference lines you snapped onto the floor. Center each course of loose tiles so that they end up an equal distance from opposing walls.

Another line might have to be snapped parallel to one of the two existing lines. If a second line is required, wash away the first one.

Next, start installing the tiles from either of the two reference lines, working from the center out. If adhesive is being used, don’t apply more than you can cover in about 20 minutes.

The last part of the job is “cutting in” the edges. We have a trick we think you’ll like.

You should lay the tile you want to cut flush with the wall-side edge of the installed tile nearest the wall. Next, lay a full tile over the one to be marked, and against the wall. Use the top tile that is against the wall to pencil mark the tile below for cutting.

Heart To Heart Ball Celebration Dinner Dance And Auction For Senior Wishes.

An Elderly Wish Foundation has announced the date of February 22, 2014 for it’s major fundraiser, the 12th Annual Heart to Heart Ball, “Treasured Wishes.” The majority of funds generated from this gala event will help “to enrich the days of the chronically ill seniors, in Contra Costa County, by making a life-long wish come true.”

This elegant dinner dance and auction will be at Antioch’s Lone Tree Golf and Event Center, 4800 Golf Course Road. This semi-formal evening is held from 5:30pm to 11:00pm and tickets are $60 per person. Guests will enjoy dancing to the music of Vocal Ease and the Boogie Men Band. The Heart to Heart Ball begins with a Silent Auction and delicious gourmet dinner with wine, followed by a short wish program and Live Auction. If you attend, you will have a chance to bid on a number of wonderful gift donations from individuals and businesses supporting the foundation’s mission. To date, some of the gifts available are: two round-trip tickets anywhere on Southwest Airlines, a two day Disneyland Hotel Getaway for four with two-day Disneyland Hopper tickets, also tickets to The S.F. GET YOUR GARDEN GROWING DIG was founded in June 1988 by Pat Moore. It started with a membership of about fourteen and has grown to one hundred at present. Members come from all over east county and elsewhere.

Anyone is eligible to join and the dues are $15.00 per year.

Our purpose is to encourage interest in gardening through education and the beautification of the community. The mission of DIG is donating garden books, tapes and videos to the local library, providing scholarships to local students, hosting informational speakers and participating in the community gardening projects.

Our annual fundraiser/plant sale consists of 10,000 plants.
