It is 4:00 pm on a beautiful October Sunday in East Contra Costa County. The farmlands are just about to take their winter nap, with the last crop of red bell peppers are loaded on trucks and off to market. The local vineyards are turning red after, but one property in particular is hosting its first wine launch. Locals watched as this gem open in 2012, but many have yet to discover its beauty. Newberry Estate Vineyards in Brentwood is owned by former NFL player, Jeremy Newberry and his lovely wife Sabrina. They were married on the property in 2012 and have turned it into one of the most desirable destinations for weddings and celebrations. On this day, not only are they showcasing their event venue, but popping the cork at this wine launch of the first bottling of Newberry’s own Mourvedre wine. Having snooped local businesses since 1997, I have to admit, I was pretty excited to take this assignment and couldn’t wait to share this story. Located off

random pics and post them on Facebook to promote the perfect place to say “I do.” The luxury, it is right here in Contra Costa County and did I mention, the backdrop from the alter overlooking the lake, fountain and beach was a full orange sunset over Mt. Diablo. BRAVO!! Another ten points!
Sunset Road, it was quite easy to find. We were greeted by a nice young man and followed the crowd to the grounds. Spectacular might be one of the words I would describe it, but even more, would be inviting. WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?
Sabrina, along with her on site wedding coordinators, local businesses, beauty professionals and Julie James from J. James Bridal Salon in Brentwood, put on a bridal fashion show the runways in New York would be proud to host. Special surprise guests modeled the dresses and brought the crowd to their feet. I sat in the front row, and had the opportunity to meet a beautiful bride to be and all of her bridesmaids that will be married here in June of 2016. She gave me the full scoop on her reason for choosing this venue and couldn’t be happier with Sabrina. During the break she met Julie to talk about purchasing her dress and Exclusively Yours, a local floral designer, about her flowers. This counts ten extra points in my book. A brief look at the grounds includes pristine lawns, perfectly manicured white tree roses, walkways for a Princess, postcard palm trees, a sparkling lake with a fully lighted fountain and a sandy beach. You could go any time of day, grab your cell phone and take some

Now the wine and Jeremy’s Man Cave. The walls showcased Jeremy’s football career’s jerseys and memorabilia and the room hosted a full bar and pool table. I brought three guests with me, and we were fortunate to find a place at the bar. Not only did Jeremy pour our complimentary glass of wine but autographed our bottles as well. A local friend, and “proud” wine snob, told me that she gave his Mourvedre two thumbs up. Me too! My guests said “this was truly a wonderful experience!” All in all, this was an amazing afternoon! Diabetes And Oral Health Diabetes is increasing in epidemic proportions in the US and throughout the world and it is one of the most burdensome chronic diseases of our time. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic limb amputations and also new cases of blindness. It is also a major cause of heart disease and stroke. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 25 million people have diabetes and of these 7 million have not been diagnosed but have the disease. People at high risk of developing diabetes are also called pre-diabetic and about 79 million U.S adults older than 20 years, are in this lengthy stage which has no symptoms. Identification of pre diabetes can help target with early intervention. Llifestyle changes resulting in, weight loss and exercising can significantly delay the progression of pre-diabetes to type 2
Patients with diabetes are more prone to get periodontal disease. Knowledge of the diabetic status in patients with periodontal disease is important because uncontrolled diabetes is associated with the rapid progression of periodontal disease. These patients have worse glycemic control and are at a greater risk of developing complications in their heart and kidney. Complications from diabetes often can develop before starting treatment for diabetes. Early diagnosis and prevention of progression of periodontal disease or gum disease is very important from a dental health point of view. Great benefits can be achieved by identifying patients with diabetes or patients who are pre-diabetic. There have been situations when these patients are unaware of their condition when they came in for their regular dental checkup and after being advised to see their health care provider by our office they learn that indeed they have the disease and grateful it was caught early. Early diagnosis helps with preventing patients from developing complications from diabetes. The cost savings and the health benefits in preventing the development of diabetes are immense.

Improving Quality of Life for Our Veterans As a proud member of the Assembly Veterans Affairs Committee, it’s my honor to champion legislation benefitting the brave individuals who have selflessly served and sacrificed much to protect our freedoms and defend our country. Veterans Day is this month, and I thought you might be interested to know about some of the work we are doing in Sacramento to improve the quality of life for our veterans. Last month, the governor signed Senate Bill 221 by state Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara), which allows state employees who are veterans with service-connected disabilities to receive an additional 96 hours of paid sick leave dedicated to their health care treatment. Many California veterans are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with physical

After Nov. 11, Californians who served in the military will have an easier time verifying their status as a veteran. Assembly Bill 935 will allow the Department of Motor Vehicles to apply a “veteran” designation to the driver’s license or identification card of verified military service members in California. Until now, the only way California veterans could verify their status was to carry around documents given to them when they were discharged. With an official designation on a driver’s license or state ID card, veterans will be able to readily access such benefits as employment or housing assistance, health and counseling, educational opportunities and more. I wasn’t able to serve in the military because of a high school sports injury, yet I’ve always tried to show my gratitude

Interior Painting If you are like most of us you would probably prefer to paint the inside of a room in your own home rather than hire it done. Not only to save money, but because painting brings quick satisfaction and it isn’t terribly hard to do. An average room can be completed in a day or two. And compared to the cost of hiring the work done, you can take a trip to Europe on what you save. A bright, fresh coat of paint can make everything in a room look new and clean. But, you must keep in mind that 80% of the task is in the preparation – making the various surfaces ready to accept the pain. This can involve washing, sanding, puttying and even chemical paint removal. Also, there is the question of personal items that must be protected. It’s OK to leave a piece of furniture in the room as long as it is fully protected. On the floor the protection must be designed to handle a “worst-casescenario” accident. Everyone knows that throw-away drop clothes can make all the difference when it comes to splattered paint – or an accidentally dropped paint tool. However, the barrier that you lay down
should protect against a spilled can of paint. That means you’ll want to have a heavy barrier of plastic between you and the floor. We suggest 6 mil visqueen as opposed to the popular 2 mil thickness. In our remodeling company we lay quarter-inch wallboard on the floor and tape it together with duct tape. Nothing will damage the floor below that stuff. Protect as much or as little as you think reasonable while keeping in mind that the floor covering in that room will cost ten times what you spend on the paint job if you spill the paint. When it comes to interior painting we are repeatedly asked the same questions. Here is a recap that may take some of the concern out of your work – and help you to do it right the first time: Do I need to prime wallboard? Bare drywall must be primed. Drywall is highly absorbent. Attempting to paint fresh drywall without priming will result in excessive paint use and a blotchy looking finished product. Actually, all bare surfaces – as well as those that have been spackled or puttied – should be primed. Can I use exterior paint indoors? It is not wise to use exterior paint indoors. Exterior paint is designed to cure (dry) in an outside environment. Outside paints also contain hazardous poisons to inhibit the growth of mildew. Mildecides used in interior paints
are different and safe for use indoors. What is the ideal temperature to apply paint? Paint should be applied at temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. And, never paint when temperatures are expected to drop below 45 degrees before the paint is expected to dry. How should I prepare the surface BEFORE I paint? When it comes to paint preparation “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”. The cleaned surface should be free of chalked paint, grease, dust, and yes you guessed it, the mildew must also be removed. Clean means clean. Trisodium phosphate (a kind of liquid sandpaper) is great for etching a painted surface. The pores it creates act as a great base for fresh paint to stick too. Mildew can be removed with our famous secret formula: 1/3 cup powdered laundry detergent, one quart liquid chlorine bleach, three quarts hot water. Mix the first two ingredients into the water and transfer into a spray bottle. Spray onto the affected area and keep wet while scrubbing for a few minutes. When the black mildew turns white it is dead and can be rinsed with fresh water. Dry the cleaned surface immediately.

California’s New Right to Die Act and Incapacity On January 1, 2016, California’s Death with Dignity Act will become effective. It is estimated that the Act will provide an option for 1 in 10 people to die with dignity in California. Why only 1 in 10 people? The reason that this Act is expected to affect such a small percentage of California citizens is that the requirements under the Act are very strict. To qualify under the Act, the patient must 1) have the mental capacity and 2) be suffering from a terminal illness—a disease that will, within reasonable medical judgment, produce death in six months. Additionally, the patient must make 3 requests to a physician: two oral and one written plus at least 15 days must separate the two oral requests. So, what is going to happen to the rest of us? For me personally, I am hoping to die peacefully in my sleep after dinner and dessert which will include lots of ice cream. However, I realize that my hope for
a peaceful death may not be in the cards for me, as I know, and will unfortunately be the case for many others. Sadly, the journey towards death can be long and arduous. That is the reason why incapacity provisions in your Trust are so important. If a Trust is properly drafted, it will give your successor Trustee specific instructions as what should be done in the event you are unable to care for yourself or make decisions for yourself. Among other things, the Trust should be clear on the following: 1. How will incapacity be determined? Is it going to be determined by your personal physician or an attending physician at the hospital? Do you want there to be a second opinion? 2. How do you want your assets used during any period of incapacity? Do you want to stay in your home and have in-home care? Is there anyone else that you may need to provide for during your incapacity like a spouse or adult child? 3. If you are not able to stay in your home, where do you want to be? Near a specific child? In a large assisted living home with lots of activities or a smaller home like setting?
4. Do you want a care manager to visit regularly to evaluate the level of care that you receiving? Do you want a private care giver in order to ensure that you have someone to take you to doctor appointments and other outings? If you have a Trust, you should review its terms regarding incapacity. If the Trust provisions are not what you want, you should consider amending the documents to correctly reflect your wishes and desires. There is no question that the Death with Dignity Act is going to helpful for a few. However, most of us are going to have some period of incapacity prior to death. We may not be able to control our physical or mental health, but we can control how our assets are used to care for us even during periods of incapacity. Since 2008, Operation Creekside has stayed true to its mission to serve deployed U. S. troops and returning veterans who have so bravely and unselfishly sacrificed themselves to preserve and protect the freedoms that we, as Americans, hold so dear. These courageous men and women put their lives on the line so that our country and its citizens can enjoy liberties that many countries only dream of. This nonprofit organization receives its inspiration from the wealth of gratitude for these dedicated warriors who confirm the truth that freedom isn’t free. Operation Creekside/Task Force Hope has delivered over 10,000 care packages to deployed military personnel and also been host to a number of veteran retreats. Packages include assorted items such as books, games, cards, snacks, letters, magazines, sunblock, and toiletries. In this way, those who serve see firsthand that people truly appreciate their efforts and are praying for their safe return. Homecoming, after the stress and tragedy of war, can also be an overwhelming adjustment for both the soldiers and their family members who have also sacrificed. The difficult transition from military to civilian life affects both the veteran and their loved ones. The repercussions of war run deep; statistics reveal that 22 veterans take their own lives each day. Operation Creekside is dedicated and committed to raising awareness about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in order to better assist veterans and their families during these challenging times.
