S.P. Automotive Supply S.P. Automotive Supply was founded in San Pablo by Gene Severen in 1947.

He took on businessman Jack Sills as a partner and, while Gene was a great parts man, Jack was well versed in business, and this combination proved to work extremely well and set the tone for the future of the company. Out of their individual expertise, came the idea that if you provide knowledgeable, professional people, quality parts, and strive for the best service for your customers, you will be successful.

During the 1960’s and 70’s, S.P. Automotive Supply took on four more partners, Randy Rickey, Sonny Taliaferro, Max Taliaferro, and Al Marcinko. This group worked their way up in the company and, once attained ownership of it, grew the business by holding to the initial philosophy; provide the best parts, the best people, and the best service. During this time they made many changes to the company that were well ahead of their time, which helped serve and grow their customer base. In May of 1987, they opened in Brentwood and have served the area for 26 years.

Working at S.P. Automotive Supply is more of a career than a job. The

Brentwood counter staff, for example, has an average term in auto parts of 30 years! The parts people at any of the S.P. stores have gone through extensive training, until they achieve “journeyman” status. This means they have learned the proper knowledge and spent the necessary time it takes to encounter the ins-and-outs of the business. This title has to be earned and is not taken lightly. Further, the chain has two machine shops that any of the stores can utilize through their vast inter-store deliveries.

S.P. Automotive Supply is active in the communities it serves. “We are a proud member of the Federated Auto Parts group,” says Mike Penfield.

“Being a part of Federated allows us to retain our independence while utilizing Federated’s size to stay competitive against the big corporations that have come to town.” To stay abreast of industry trends, S.P. has served in industry organizations. “We served eight years on the board of directors for the local ASCCA chapter20 and recently partnered with Contra Costa College to help grow the interest in the automotive trade.

Still privately owned, Randy Rickey, a part of the second generation, and relative newcomers Mike Penfield and Steve Markus, still adhere to that recipe that made S.P. successful. “If we hire and retain the best possible people, they will serve our customers

well,” according to Rickey. “The focus of the company is and always will be serving its customers.”

In 2008 S.P. was crowned business of the year in San Pablo and received awards recognizing them as such by the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County, City of San Pablo, San Pablo Chamber of Commerce, and West County Business and Professional Association. S.P. also earned the Big Picture Award from the West County Waste Water District.

“Those awards are a great honor, but if we continue to focus on our customers and communities, our people, and our manufacture partners, our true reward will be another generation of satisfied customers and people in the company who care enough to execute the tradition that has been established,” according to Penfield.

FamilyFriendly Ski Resort Any of the dozens of major ski resorts from New England to the Rockies to California offers great skiing, but not every ski resort is a great choice for a family vacation.

Family-friendly ski areas provide opportunities for parents and children to spend precious time together, as well as rare time apart to ski at their own levels. The best resorts have gentle slopes for little skiers, firstrate instructors for children ages 3 and older, childcare services for kids younger than 3 years old and more than enough activity to keep Junior busy when he leaves the mountain.

The Effects of Food And Beverages on Dental Health Even though tooth decay has remarkably declined over 30 years, it is still a silent epidemic. About 20% of children between 2 and 4 years have detectable caries and by 17 years of age, 80% of young people have had a cavity. Diet plays an important role in a person’s pre-disposition to developing cavities. Plaque bacteria readily metabolise sugars and additives in food and drinks to produce acids that result in enamel softening or demineralisation. Frequent and excessive sugar consumption is an important factor for cavities to start.

The intake of carbohydrates, particularly sucrose more than four times a day or in quantities more than sixty grams per day can increase the rate of cavities. The more frequent intake of sugary snacks between meals exposes the enamel to longer periods of acid attacks, leading to softer enamel.

Sugar added cereals are a combination of refined sugar and starch and are the most

commonly consumed breakfast items in the morning. Processed food starches in modern human diets have significant cavity producing characteristics in them. In both human and animal studies, researchers found that the combination of sugar and starch led to more enamel demineralisation than did a diet of sugar alone. Children who consumed cereal with added sugar have more cavities in their teeth. Beverages such as milk and juice also have different effects on oral health. Fruit juices are considered healthy food choices, however, excessive intake or continuously sipping fruit juices can be a risk to dental health because these juices are highly acidic and they are also processed with added ingredients, especially sugar, which can cause erosion and caries. Fruit juices often are included as the beverage of choice in children’s meals or snack packs and are considered healthy.

There are concerns regarding the high caloric and sugar contents of fruit juices, which may lead to obesity, thereby adversely affecting general health. Unfortunately, the implications of fruit juices as a cause of dental caries usually are not emphasised.

Most people have caries causing bacteria in their dental plaque. In health, there tends to be low numbers of bacteria and the frequent disturbance of the biofilm during tooth brushing and flossing will

prevent demineralisation or cavitation of a tooth. When large numbers of plaque are present due to inadequate oral hygiene, the number of cavity causing bacteria increases, especially when the patient is undergoing orthodontic treatment. It is essential to prevent the accumulation of plaque and calculus on the teeth and around orthodontic appliances and to get the teeth evaluated every 6 months.

Currently, high emphasis is placed on the relationship between sugary drinks and snacks and obesity, but there is a need for equal emphasis on the harmful effects of such food and drinks on oral health.

Essential cornerstones of controling cavities is preventive and interceptive care, like getting teeth checked every 6 months for kids and watch what kids eat and drink.

Containing Home Air Leaks Once again we are approaching winter.

In many parts of the country flooding rains have occurred and in some areas snow already has fallen. This is the time of the year when we begin to think about what we can do to cut costs and get the best bang for our heating buck. If you are like most Americans you already have insulated your attic and exterior walls. If you have not, it is time to do so. If you are a real smart consumer you also have insulated your floors. But, there still is more. Insulation alone will not do the trick. Another step, called infiltration control, should be undertaken.

Infiltration control refers to the containing of air leaks through penetrations in ceilings, walls and floors.

It is critically important to a proper insulation job. If you have a water faucet on an outside wall, chances are that it is connected to a pipe that supplies a plumbing fixture on the other side of the wall. Look outside the window in the

kitchen, laundry or bath to see if this is the case. If the pipe protrudes from a wall cavity rather than from the rim of the floor, that pipe is in a prime location to cause an air leak. Holes on the inside of your home normally will be found in the wall beneath and behind plumbing fixtures (toilet, sink shower, etc.). The biggest air leaks usually can be found under cabinets. The holes in those locations often are enormous.

Another location where infiltration can occur is in the attic where pipes in walls travel up through the ceiling. When this condition exists, air travels from the attic down into the wall cavity and out through the first hole it finds – usually a wall switch or a plug or a heat register.

Plumbers and electricians are notorious for giving themselves plenty of room to work during the construction process. It is not uncommon to see a two-inch hole surrounding a one-inch pipe. Or worse yet, a one-inch hole surrounding a threeeighths-inch wire. Actually, these are more than points of infiltration. They are small wind tunnels.

More easily identifiable points of infiltration are gaps in exterior siding and window and door frames. Years ago, we

often stuffed insulation into the gaps that air flowed through. That was because caulking wouldn’t hold up in such large voids. We also used tin plates at the bottoms and back of cabinets where pipe penetrations were surrounded by large, gaping holes. We would cut a hole in the center of the plate that closely fit the size of the pipe. The overall size of the plate had to be large enough to cover the gap, with enough left over for fastening with screws or nails.

Large or small expanding foam is now our first choice for all gaps of all kinds.

It’s inexpensive and quick – and very easy to use. Here’s a tip: Never attempt to clean expanding foam from a surface until after it dries completely. When wet expanding foam simply cannot be easily removed from a surface. Once dry, it can be quickly wisked away.
