WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?

Santa’s Jewelry Elf Residents of East Contra Costa County generally start their day with the early morning sun outlining the horizon of Mt. Diablo, but today it can’t be seen. With all the crops harvested and the land put to bed for the winter, it is time to climb up in the attic and bring down the Christmas décor. What a perfect time to look in on a local company who can make everyone’s dream come true.

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and I have never met a gentleman who didn’t appreciate a special gift of jewelry. That being said, I was fortunate enough to meet Mark Broder from Broder Jewelry Design of Brentwood. Loving to shop, especially for jewelry, I was excited to jump in the car for my morning snoop. His store is a little off the beaten path, but is quite easy to find. Just turn down Harvest Park Drive by the bowling alley, pass my friend Kevin at Vornhagen’s Body Shop, look for our famous Expressions Dance Academy and right next door is Broder Jewelry.

I pushed the doorbell to gain my security entrance and was greeted immediately

by Mark. This type of security counts two points in my book. I told him I was interested in the sign in the front that said “We buy gold!”. He told me how the process worked and I must say I was really surprised. I had been hearing about selling old necklaces and other jewelry that is tucked away and never worn and thought it was just a scam. Boy, was I wrong. Mark told me people come in with a few pieces and walk out that day with a check, often in the hundreds of dollars. Rather than explain the process, I want you to tear out this article, gather up you old jewelry and go see Mark.

You are going to be amazed.

I think the part I liked best was his vision for creating the perfect ring for one you love.

And you can take your treasured family jewelry in to restore or

remodel so you can start wearing it rather than storing it. This would be a great time to pass along an heirloom on Christmas morning to the next generation to wear.

As I was talking with Mark about the gold, the phone rang a couple of times and I told him to go ahead and take his calls as I was not in a hurry. This allowed me to witness his genuine care for each of his customers. I found him to be courteous and kind, while answering each of their questions in a professional manner.

After the calls, I asked about a ring that I would like to sell and he told me he had a few friends that specialized in heirloom brokering and would be glad to help me with my request. How great is that! I really felt comfortable about this conversation and will make an appointment with him to see the ring.

Who’s Who... in East County

At Heavenly Cheesecakes & More, owners Shellie Hirsch and Maria Martinek strive to create desserts that people will love and want to come back for. They offer coffee, tea, cider, & cocoa to customers who would like to hang out and use the WiFi, have a business meeting, or who just come by for a well-deserved treat! They have two bakers that bake cupcakes, wedding cakes, and birthday cakes, as well as different pastries, cookies, cake pops, and, of course, cheesecake! The Heavenly Team also specializes in dessert bars for special events, which can be held in their shop! Their cheesecakes are made from scratch right there in their kitchen in Brentwood every day they are open. Heavenly Cheesecakes are lighter than the “average” cheesecake. Most do not have eggs or sour cream. And, instead of slices, they sell by the “handful”, which are cheesecakes that are baked in baking cups that are the equivalent to a slice. You can purchase a 10” cheesecake, or for the same price you can purchase a variety of 12 handfuls.

Opening up a cheesecake shop was never a goal for Shellie. She actually hated cheesecake!

Years ago, her husband wanted cheesecake for his birthday, so she began experimenting.

Eventually, she perfected the “Heavenly Cheesecake” and shared it with her neighbor, Maria, (also not a cheesecake fan) who loved it. Since then, they have created over 100 cheesecake recipes together. Both Shellie and Maria’s sons joined the military and that had a huge impact on both of them. Maria’s son, William really pushed them all the way from Afghanistan. During his off time, he and his soldiers would work on logos and business plans, so the ladies knew they had to go for it. They realized they could sell cheesecake, plus bring awareness to our brave men and women serving our country. They hold packaging events with Operation Creekside twice a month in the shop and collect donations every day. “We can’t ever forget that they are there, fighting for us,” says Shellie.

Chronic Headache Headaches are a common condition that patients suffer from and it is overwhelming to know about 78 percent of adult women and 68 percent of adult men suffer from headaches.

It is interesting to know that the onset of headaches is low after middle age.

There are different reasons why people suffer from headaches. It could be due to migraine, tension-type or cluster headaches. Some headaches could be due to infection in the teeth or gums, clenching or grinding teeth, and even due to skeletal and muscular instability.

Some headaches are more dangerous when they are related to brain tumor or hemorrhage, or nerve damage.

Headache disorders can manifest with pain in any region of the nerve which supplies the teeth and the jaws. Therefore, the pain could be

originating from a tooth or from other causes and, sometimes, headaches can even mimic dental pain. The dentist will do extensive diagnostic tests to differentiate the origin of the pain. Depending on the cause of the pain, several treatment options such as low level laser therapy, therapeutic ultrasound and sometimes micro current nerve stimulation along with medications can help to relieve the pain. It is, therefore, very important to go to the dentist when there is constant jaw or headache pain so the dentist can do a complete examination. This will include your health history and other tests needed in collaboration with your medical professional to make sure that the headache is due to a dental cause, or not. Constant headaches can cause the patient to clench the teeth and vice versa. This, in turn, can cause TMJ problems, which can be very destructive to the teeth and the existing fillings and crowns as well.

etc. But basically the toughest part of the process seems to be getting the paint from the vat into the cans. The quality of the paint can be measured by the ratio of titanium dioxide to clay (rock to dirt).

More titanium dioxide and less clay equal better paint. Actually, titanium dioxide is a pigment and clay is a filler. Paint with too much clay has a tendency to chalk.

Since clay is heavier than titanium dioxide cheaper paints tend to weigh more than the better ones.

Painting Made Easier Painting is the favorite home improvement of the do-it-yourselfer.

As remodeling contractors, we can tell you that many folks, who otherwise hire others to do their work, choose to do their own painting.

1. Pre-painting patchwork should be done with the proper putty or spackle.

Use exterior latex putty for exterior nail holes and cracks. Always prime puttied areas. Putty absorbs paint differently than wood and will cause an uneven finish if left unprimed.

It actually is kind of easy to compare paint. Titanium Dioxide is as fine as talcum powder and clay is far more course and gritty. Give paint the finger test to determine quality. Open the can and rub a freshly shaken can between your thumb and forefinger. If the paint is gritty it has lots of clay. If the paint is smooth and silky it has less clay and more pigment – and that’s the paint that you want. Besides cosmetics, painting provides protection against damage by moisture and the sun’s rays. Paint is supposed to create a moisture barrier, not a vapor barrier. Your house needs to breath. Paint fails as a protector when moisture can’t pass through it. It peels and splits when vapors can’t penetrate it. This lack of a painted surface’s ability to breathe is usually caused by the presence of too many coats of paint. This is one where more is NOT better.

We’ve had the opportunity to watch paint being made and, except for the huge size of the mixing vat, the whole process looks a lot like making cake batter. It may surprise you to know we discovered that water-based paint is nothing more than a mixture of water, finely crushed rock, powdered dirt and glue. The water is simply of the tap variety and the rock (usually titanium dioxide) is so finely crushed it looks like wheat flour. The dirt is nothing more than clay in the form of a very fine powder. And the glue is old fashioned white glue (polyvinyl acetate PVA). When the paint is used, the water evaporates and the glue holds the rock and dirt together, and to the wall.

3. Select the right paint brush. Natural bristles for oil-based paint and nylon or another synthetic for water-based paints.

4. Stretch a large rubber band across the top-center of the paint can. Remove excess paint by scraping the brush against the rubber band.

5. If you are using a roller, and the job looks like it’s going to take an additional day, don’t wash it. Simply wrap it in common household cellophane wrap and place it in the refrigerator overnight. It will be fresh for use the next day.

Welcome to the Rollerdome! With the earth’s supplies nearly exhausted, law and order has broken down and roller derby gangs are taking over the streets. Due to the lawless outside world, Undead Bettys Roller Derby created a safe haven where roller derby gangs can battle their differences out on the track. Doors open at 6:00pm, and the bout begins at 6:45pm. Advance tickets are $12 for adults and $8 online only for children ages 3 to 12. Prices increase to $15 at the door for everyone over 3 years old.
