Experts recommend the following steps to avoid overspending this holiday season: • Make a budget: First, decide how much you can afford to spend on the holidays this year. Include expenses such as holiday foods, party clothes, decorations and postage. Research shows that consumers who establish budgets are much less likely to overspend.

• Make a list: Write down everyone you would like to give a gift. Include your gift idea and its price. Total the amount and make necessary adjustments if the costs exceed your budget.

Celebrity Cruises This is an exciting time for Celebrity Cruises. First of all, they have a new member of the family on the way and she will be delivered in October and will be in service by the time you see this newsletter article.

Celebrity Cruises’ fifth and final Solsticeclass ship, the 3,030-passenger Celebrity Reflection, has left the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, and is sailing to the North Sea. To get to the open water from Papenburg, the 1,047-foot-long, 121-foot-wide vessel had to sail up the Ems River backwards, which it did in about 10 hours. The captain steers the ship backward, at less than 4 mph, with help from tugboats fore and aft.

Preparations for the transit -- known as “the conveyance” -- include removing power lines and railway tracks that normally pass over the river. The journey

must take place when wind conditions are calm and at high tide to ensure ample depth of water in the river to prevent the ship from scraping its multimillion-dollar paintwork. Thousands of spectators lined the river to watch the conveyance.

Following sea trials and the completion of finishing work while in Emshaven, the Netherlands, Celebrity Reflection will host an invitation-only preview sailing before embarking Oct. 12 on its first cruise from Amsterdam. Celebrity Reflection will cross the Atlantic Ocean to arrive in Miami on Dec. 1 and depart for its inaugural Caribbean sailing on Dec. 5, following invitation-only promotional sailings. The ship will offer seven-night Eastern Caribbean itineraries roundtrip from Miami.

Celebrity Reflection will feature AquaClass Suites, Signature Suites and the Reflection Suite, which will have a glass shower extending out over the edge of the ship. Only on the Reflection can you experience this—The Lawn Club Grill is the newest specialty restaurant, The bright and modern Lawn Club Grill celebrates the flavorful joys of outdoor grilling – with cosmopolitan flair.

So come aboard and experience the Reflection from Miami this fall and winter.

In other news from Celebrity, the Celebrity Century home ports itself in Southern California in January of 2014.

She will sail Panama Canal cruises in January from San Diego, a Hawaii cruise in February from Los Angeles and also in March there will be 2 Hawaii trans pacific sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles. In April she will perform several 7 day California Coastal cruises from Los Angeles.

Her coastal cruises include stops at Santa Barbara, an overnight in San Francisco, Monterey, Catalina Island and an all day stop in Ensenada.

Mouth Breathing In the mouth, a balance of functions should exist between breathing, suckling, swallowing, chewing and speech. Bone is the second hardest substance in the body; it is susceptible to small, continuous forces from muscles.

Mouth breathing results in changed tongue positioning from the palate to the floor of the mouth, resulting in the mandible to be positioned more inferiorly and changes in the neck and facial musculature changing the facial and dental characteristics.

At as early as three years of age, mouth breathing and lower tongue position produces an elongation of the lower facial height which is

detected after age five. In addition, the backward positioning of the mandible in mouth breathers leads to an increased facial height. Palatal changes are also noticed like narrow upper jaw and an increase in the depth of the palate. This, in turn, causes changes in the teeth position, leading to crowding and protruded front teeth, changes in the facial bone structure, chin position and also in the growth of the lips. These result in signs like long face, drooping eyes, thin upper lip, dry lips, inverted lower lip, narrow nostrils and also inadequate lip seal where the lips do not remain closed and stay open resulting in open bite and also in speech problems. Those who breathe through the mouth also complain of dry mouth, halitosis (bad breath), restless sleep, snoring, daytime time sleepiness, flaccid lips and protruding upper front teeth. Mouth breathing can also affect the oxygen saturation to the brain which gets reduced and in turn affects normal brain function.

Mouth breathing can be identified by parents when they see the dribbling on the pillow three times or more per week and, obviously, the child keeping the mouth open while sleeping and also snoring. The dentist can also help in evaluating the child and to detect the causes resulting in the mouth breathing and treat accordingly. Early detection and treatment of mouth breathing can change the child’s facial development, oxygen saturation to brain and muscles, and general quality of life.

What Can You Do To Protect Your Home Before Winter Arrives?

Plenty! First and foremost, consider the possibility of leaks at all five walls that are the exterior of your home (front, back, sides, and roof). Use a hose to check the seals at shingles, windows, doors and other openings. The heat of summer will dry out caulked joints, causing hairline openings that will let in the elements.

Keep raindrops from falling on your head this rainy season with a little preventative maintenance. Don’t wait for your head to get wet to determine the condition of your roof. Act now by looking for signs of trouble, and make the necessary repairs. Use binoculars to look for loose shingles or shakes, or, if you have a tile or slate roof, look for missing or cracked pieces. On shingle roofs, look for curling, fraying, and tears at the edges. And don’t forget to check the flashings around chimneys, vents, skylights and other roof penetrations. They should be tight and

Use caution here: it is possible to force water under shingles with a hose, giving you the impression of a leak where one may not actually exist.

Winter rainwater going directly from roof to ground will fall too close to your foundation, and may cause damage that could mean economic disaster.

Wet sub areas precipitate foundation shift, resulting in creaking, cracking, and mildewing. Once assured that gutters and downspouts are leak-free and running clear, the next step will be to insure that water carried to ground level is transported at least three feet away from the perimeter of your house (a short piece of drain pipe will do here). For best results, it is recommended that roof water

Here it is, early October and the morning temperatures have turned mild.

You’ve got to love the East County and the beautiful weather it unveils this time of year. With the farmlands being put to bed for the winter, what a great time of year to be thinking about that new car you need for your holiday travels.

This month’s assignment has taken me to an old familiar business. Some time ago, I was out running errands and drove by the Contra Costa County Public Auto Auction and just pulled in out of curiosity. Fact is, I didn’t even tell my husband until I got home. This has always intrigued me and I couldn’t stand the temptation. I parked the car and followed the loud speakers announcing the next car up for auction. I had a great time and almost bought a car I didn’t need. Not too long ago, these guys moved to their current location on East Leland Drive in Pittsburg and it is bigger and better than ever.

The auction generally has up to 150 vehicles up for auction and you can see them all

They have cars, trucks, sports utility vehicles, minivans, travel trailers and R.V.’s. You just register, get your number, grab your seat and have a great time. And if you are going to buy a vehicle, you can get pre-approved for bank financing and drive your car away that day. How cool is that? The part I like the best is when they bring in the car, beep the horn and the bidding starts. It is so fast and exciting and the deals are unbelievable. It all happens right before your eyes. Can you imagine being able to buy your next vehicle without having to deal with the salesman? What a great way to get the car you want at an incredible price.

They are open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. And the auctions are the first Saturday of every month. They have a unique guarantee which takes a lot of the guesswork out of choosing the auction for your next purchase. And they are so friendly and helpful when you come in.

You can actually research what sold at the last auction and what is coming up on

I think the thing I liked most about the auction was it seemed to give everyone a chance to get the vehicle they really wanted at a price they could afford. And when the buyer wins the bid, the excitement even grows. From the loud speakers and the auctioneers calling, you can’t help but have fun. The hard part is, when you are going just for the fun of it, you really get tempted to take advantage of the great deals.

So, if your are looking for your next vehicle or need to pick one up for your teenage driver, this should definitely be on your list of places to see. Who knows, maybe that little red sports car you have always wanted might be the next up for bid with no one in the audience but you bidding on her. Told you it was tempting!

This nightmare invoking, scream inducing, pant wetting, warehouse of terror is a fundraising event benefiting Antioch City Park and of course all the children and residents who enjoy it.
